Minnie - Her (Album Review)

Seven years after her debut with (G)I-DLE Minnie has accomplished two things: she released her highly anticipated debut album and extended her streak of consecutive years without producing a bad song!

Her first album as a soloist was released on Tuesday, January 21st and as promised by Minnie, it's very...HER. She co-wrote all 7 songs in the mini-album, and only two songs (Blind Eyes Red and Drive You Crazy) weren't co-produced by her.

Throughout her career with the band, Minnie has been characterized for her duality on and off-stage, similar to Red Velvet's Seulgi: fierce on-stage presence and bubbly personality once the cameras stop rolling. This duality is the center of the official single HER. In the video, we can see three different Minnies: lovely Minnie, the cute version of her that appears in interviews, chic Minnie, the haunting version of her we see in every performance and what I would call, Idol Minnie, the version of her trying to hold together her different moods and personalities. It's a great metaphor for life in the public eye, and also the perfect introduction to the diversity in themes and genres in her album.

Over the years, Minnie has tried different topics and production styles in her songs, and she made sure to include the best of each in this album: Blind Eyes Red and Cherry Sky for all the Lucid/grown-up-Minnie lovers, Valentine's Dream for all the romantic Minnie enthusiasts, It's Ok for the fans of gloomy Minnie, if you enjoy her chemistry with fellow member Yuqi and Minnie's rocker persona, Drive You Crazy is for you, and finally, if you were craving a collaboration with a fellow tai idol in a catchy pop-song, Obsession with WayV's TEN might be your choice.

HER is a solid delivery from one of the best voices in music who happens to be an elegant and polished producer. The future is bright for Minnie, and I can't wait for what's next.

I can hardly contain my excitement for Minnie's solo debut! I've been hoping for her to release a solo album for quite some time.

During (G)I-DLE's entire career, Minnie's tracks have consistently been my favorites. Each of her songs deserves to be a title track; they all carry her unique charm. I can identify her songs instantly, even without checking the credits.

And her voice? It's simply angelic and dreamy! Listening to her music feels like stepping into a magical realm.
