MZSD 002 (PART 1)

on the morning of JANUARY 20, ROH KYUHYUN leads the 8 boys to one of the various vary large practice rooms they've been using over the past months. this time however, instead of the usual empty space only filled with mirrors and sound equipment, an area towards the further end of the room has been set up with two L shaped sofas and a mini fridge next to it. opposite those, some basic gym equipments and mats are set up and additional storage space added for the boys to put their bags, coats and personal items in while they are practicing. "welcome to mzsd's personal practice room" kyuhyun announces. "from today on, unless stated otherwise, this space is where you'll practice, film lives and content. maybe catch a nap from time to time too." he gestures for them to sit on the floor and does so himself. "unfortunately, daehyun will not be able to join us today but someone else will drop by at some point. let's get started while they make their way here."

members who are expected to participate the most in producing music have been given their own studios, while those still in the process of learning have been paired with members who focus less on producing at the moment. should the other members' interests change, this arrangement could change. additionally, HWANG MINKI has been given keys to access the smaller DANCE STUDIOS to work on choreographies and dance.

in early FEBRUARY, the USGEN CAFE will have its grand opening. this cafe will be situated one floor above the labels' and accessible for all employees and guests of LGC ENTERTAINMENT. the cafe was created with the sole purpose of providing somewhere people reduce their stress level at. and what better way to do so than around CATS. while enjoying their drinks of choice, customers will be able to pet and play with the residents and even buy their favorite treats from the menu. during the last week of january, the MZSD members will be visiting their shelter of choice to each choose a cat! the cafe will have a total of 12 cats, one for all the artists under USGEN.

LGC BOYS VS US GEN BOYS

MZSD currently has 4 members who are officially part of LGC BOYS (bk, noeul, saem and yichen). from JANUARY 21 to JANUARY 25 these members will be joining the rest of LGC BOYS to film a VARIETY SHOW overseas (note: details will be posted next week as the calendar has been pushed back by a week due to last week's ac).

no to be outdone, the members not part of the unit (mk, wenjun, jazz and eden) will be filming their own content in late MARCH that will be posted on the USGEN channel. since these members have the least predebut exposure, the goal of this special content is to get them out there. the four of them will be going to HONGDAE, given each a hand camera, and challenged to find:

one person with any MZSD song in their playlist

one person to do any MZSD dance challenge*

one person to sing any MZSD song with them at the noraebang*

one person who recognizes them first and give to them your photocard

( *any mzsd song released before march 2025 is eligible)

a knock on the door interrupts the manager and none other than SEO HANEUL walks in. he nonchalantly greets the members by raising his hand before letting it down. with a yawn, he sits next to KYUHYUN. "boss is not here right now and still bitter that i got to produce your debut song" a self-satisfied smile appears on his face. no matter how grown haneul is, giving headaches to the eldest member is still one of his favorite hobbies. "i think i was supposed to tell you some mildly important stuff, but i totally forgot." he continues. "so let's just cut to the chase.

with BK, NOEUL and WENJUN'S participation, your next TWO SONGS are ready. i've sent the lyrics and relevant stuff through kakaotalk, you guys can check later. we'll be recording them next week, starting from JANUARY 27 and should release them on MARCH 3. lessons for EARTH, WIND, AND FIRE and ME= choreographies will also begin around that time. oh, did daehyun mention that i also created EWF choreography?" he doesn't wait nor need to know the answer. instead he raises a finger and points at MINKI. "MK, you will be my assistant for this task. so while the others are off to some island this week, you'll be with me to learn and smooth out the choreography. for the three of you who will be free… hmm… work on your cardio" he instructs ominously as kyuhyun shoots him a dark look. which part wasn't he supposed to spoil? only he and the manager know.

"we know that you want to be more involved in the creative process of the group, however, the whole team, including your manager here and daehyun, thinks its better that you focus on your debut at the moment. the last ten days of march will be dedicated to shoot EWF and ME= music videos. EWF's shooting alone is projected to take a whole week with little rest on your part. at the same time, we'll all be gearing up to release a USGEN mini-album before going on a GREETING TOUR. you're going to be busy enough for the next few months. this is why we've worked on the label's album with producers outside the company. the mini will include 6 new songs; one for each group and four unit songs. the lyrics distribution and details are also on kakaotalk. we want to be done recording all the songs by the first week of april. it's going to be a tight schedule, but that's something you'll need to get used to it anyway." he pauses, one eye closed and the other scrunched as he thinks about what he might have missed. "oh, right! APRIL 30. your debut date is APRIL 30! to commemorate this milestone and motivate your fans, each of you has to write down a pledge for if you win first place on music shows. get creative! like… i don't know… promise to jump off a plane or something! anyway, good luck!" and in the blink of an eye, he makes his exit, leaving kyuhyun to answer questions and other details.

Yusrarel, Minky Momo Episode 5

I posted recently about the fifth episode of Magical Princess Minky Momo (魔法のプリンセス ミンキー モモ), which involves a made-up country somewhere in the Mediterranean region. The first comment I received on that post was a snide remark that it didn't appear to be an imaginary country but rather simply Spain. At first I felt defensive, but the commenter was right that there were flamenco dancers and, the more I thought about it, the more I felt like I should rewatch the episode and pay a little closer attention so I could parse all of the details, particularly because this is exactly the kind of thing I'm interested in.

The subtitles on the version of this show I'm watching render the country's name as Yusrarel. I don't know for sure but I assume that would be ユスラレル, which could also be transliterated into the Roman alphabet as Yusurareru. This is somewhat close to the way Israel is transliterated into Japanese -- Isuraeru (イスラエル).

The reason the prince of Yusrarel has come to Japan is to deliver a rare three-humped camel to a local zoo. This is, of course, the tie-in to the show's animal and veterinary theme.

In addition to the camel, another key cultural element that makes this country seem like it could be in the Middle East-North Africa region is the style of headdress they wear. We see two turbans -- a white/cream one and a black/navy one. Neither are exactly like real world headdresses from any region but they are certainly reminsicent.

One thing that I think is worth mentioning here is that the prince is depicted as having curly red hair and freckles. Of course, it's fraught to over interpret racial phenotypes in Showa era anime, and it is also noteworthy that these traits are more widespread throughout the Mediterranean region than we might guess based on stereotypes. For example, I have met people in Tunisia with red hair which might not have been what I would have assumed before I had been there.

Also, his name is Prince Tam Tam (タムタム王子), which I don't think really gives any clues to the culture they're constructing.

One thing that is kind of neither here nor there in terms of interpreting this imaginary country but that I thought was still very fun was the appearance of this Christian omamori (御守) for safe travels. It's funny to see something so Shinto in a Christian fom.

So my commenter was right that part of this episode takes place in Madrid, Spain. This was the line I missed the first time I watched this that actually makes a big difference in trying to understand the geography of this episode.

The last scene does take place in the palace in Yusrarel, which looks very European to me. It looks like Versailles or something.

So, while some of the episode takes place in Japan and some does take place in Spain, Yusrarel is definitely imaginary and combines elements of several existing cultures, adding in a dash of the fantastic. It reminds me a bit of the way Showa majokko series treat Africa, which I also noted recently here and here.

All of this also reminds me of the contemporary series, Patalliro! (パタリロ!), which I am primarily interested in because of its groundbreaking queer content. But it also takes place in a fantastical European country called Malynera. It ran against Minky Momo on Thursday nights on a different channel.

Minki prided himself most on being someone that is feared, and while he does not assume that Hana is scared of him, but there's a healthy respect between them, an acknowledgement that they are a far more powerful force together than they would be pitted against each other. "Perhaps I misspoke, but what I meant is that I could give you the list. I could switch the script and be the informant for once." It's an olive branch that he is extending, smooth with the offer as if he's not purposely attempting to find another reason to tie them together for a little longer. Her tone is lost on him, in the habit of taking everything a tad too seriously and with more gravitas than may be warranted. "You think I am not keenly aware of the cash flow channels in this city? I have made it part of my mission to follow the money so that I could obtain as much of it as possible for myself." And he holds no shame in that. As someone who had come from nothing, as someone who had literally been discarded in the trash, Minki may not be a modern day Robin Hood by any stretch of the imagination, but he does do his part to steal from the rich. And the wealth he's amassed does also pour into the community that he is building in Panacea. That had always been the goal, to create a refuge of sorts for people like him. He does not know Hana's story, yet he has to believe that her penchant for violence has to come from circumstances that had left a trail of blood. "If it's medical advice you want, I can take you to the hospital. Just know the food there won't be as good as here." His own attempt at a joke, nodding at her request, grabbing his cocktail shaker and mixing together a mixture of vodka, triple sec, and a splash of cola before sliding it her way in a garnished glass.

she  ignores  the  slightest  shift  in  his  expression  from  the  mention  of  her  pending  departure.  she  is  certain  that  he’d  rather  such  matters  go  unnoticed  by  her,  too.  in  instances  like  this,  it’s  suddenly  a  curse  that  people  like  them  are  trained  to  have  an  observant  eye.  “i  wouldn’t  dare.  what  kind  of  a  fool  would  i  be  to  make  an  enemy  out  of  you?”  hana  is  more  than  aware  that  wronging  the  likes  of  him  would  get  her  straight  into  a  coffin  and  while  she  is  well  acquainted  with  death,  she  much  prefers  being  the  one  who  brings  it  upon  others  rather  than  experiencing  it  herself  at  such  a  young  age.  while  she  cannot  name  many  reasons  that  make  living  a  heaven  (  it  isn’t  ),  she  is  too  stubborn  to  let  herself  die.  “and  if  i  do  find  a  list  of  those  men,  why  would  i  bother  to  share  with  you?”  she  smiles.  “unless  you’re  proposing  to  be  my  business  partner  in  this  lucrative  trade,  but  i  don’t  suppose  you’ll  take  up  any  of  the  seduction  that’s  required  for  it  to  work.  so  what  use  would  i  get  out  of  involving  you  in  the  deal,  exactly?”  she’s  only  messing  around,  which  is  strange  if  she  lets  herself  think  about  the  kind  of  lighthearted  banter  they  allow  to  happen  in  each  other’s  presence  too  much.  she  doesn’t  protest  when  he  practically  makes  her  lean  on  him  and  while  she  knows  that  it’s  not  something  that  she  should  get  used  to,  it  is  treacherously  comforting  to  know  that  she  can.  comforting.  but  so,  so  treacherous.  she  cannot  help  the  small  laugh  that  stumbles  out  from  his  suggestion  and  the  pain  from  her  abdomen  is  swiftly  ignored.  “that’s  terrible  medical  advice.”  but  one  that  she  is  evidently  taking  as  she  sits  on  the  bar  stool,  before  she  props  her  chin  with  her  elbow  on  the  marble  counter.  “long  island."  it'd  be  her  usual  go-to.  "just  vodka  would  do.”  she’s  never  picky  with  alcohol.  as  with  most  things,  she’s  good  with  whatever  that  gets  the  job  done.

shortly after, none other than CHOI DAEHYUN of DBSD himself enters the room. his presence seems to fill it as soon as he steps in. after exchanging greetings, PARK JEONGAN addresses the people present. "as you've surely heard, we are opening a new subsidary, and from today on, CHOI DAEHYUN will be your boss." the last word is followed by a short amused chuckle. "DBSD, when founding USGEN, had a clear view of the company and what they want to achieve. and the 8 of you have been carefully picked by all the people present here with this view in mind. in the next couple of months, you'll be moving to the 7th floor, which will be fully dedicated, and only accessible to USGEN staff. don't worry, the rest of the building - except LGC AGENCY's foor - will still be accessible for you." he further explains. "this will be the last meeting that ISEUL and myself will be attending. Creative control will be handled by DBSD members themselves, while HYUNCHEOL, YOUNGJAE and YONGSEOK will be here to support you on the day to day matters until further notice."

NEW KIDZ ON THE BLOCK

the basis of a new group is to introduce those part of it and this is what the first tasks of the boys will be about ! as this is content for a YOUTUBE CHANNEL, the tasks are divided in 'videos' that the boys will have to film:

NEW KIDZ ON THE BLOCK (TAKE 2): DBSD'S DAEHYUN has produced and written the THEME SONG for the youtube channel, titled NEW KIDZ ON THE BLOCK, it has already been recorded with the five first members, now that three more have joined, it will be rerecorded with them. The 8 MEMBERS audio and video performance will be the ones released to the public.

DOOM DUM DOOM: DBSD'S SEOHAN was tasked to compose, write and choreograph an anthem-sounding song that would show the future group's colors. the song titled 'DOOM DU DOOM' is the result. the group will be learning an practicing the song for the next month before they will be evaluated by a panel composed of DAEHYUN, SEOHAN and various coaches. if they should pass this evaluation, they will be filming the music video of the song some time in JUNE, with a digital release around JULY 8. all the lyrics for this trimester can be found HERE

SHOW US YOUR BEST (TRIAL MEMBERS ONLY): each members will record a solo performance* demonstrating what they are best at in terms of skills (singing, dancing, rapping and/or instuments are accepted)

SOLO PRACTICE (CORE MEMBERS ONLY): each member will be tasked to film themselves during their solo practice for about 1 hour. the skills they are practicing are up to them. this is to show the viewers and fans a window into their lives as trainees.

LANGUAGE BOOTCAMP: due to having less than 70 KOREAN LANGUAGE POINTS, KURAMOTO MISAKI and MAE JASPER have to participate in the language bootcamp, while LAI WENJUN will take part in it since he has less than 30 ENGLISH LANGUAGE POINTS. information on these bootcamps will be released later.

*only songs released by legacy artists or released by any artists BEFORE january 2022 are eligible

SHORTS

as written in the article, USGEN aims to be setting trends, and what better way to do so than use YOUTUBE SHORTS and TIKTOK. for fans to know them better, the members will be filming a 'SHALL WE KNOW' short (see JULIE and NATTY filming one HERE). each member will have to pick a LOCATION and OUTFIT that fits their IMAGE and PERSONALITY. if the location is outside of LEGACY, USGEN will book the location for a one hour shoot. another member will be in charge of FILMING the short and GIVING QUESTIONS. none of them will know the questions that will be asked prior to the short being filmed as the answers and actions need to be spontaneous. daehyun has only advice for the boys; go all out without shame !

on a final note, we are in the process of picking a leader of the final group. as it stands SUNG HANEUL and HAN NOEUL are the only one to have shown interest in the role. the second part of the mission that'll come later in the trimester will pertain to group leader trials. other than HANEUL, if your muse is interested in the role, please kindly let us know through direct message. i want to make it clear that the muse will need to VOLUNTEER for the role as, ic wise, none of them would be forced into this position.

PERFORMANCE: write a 300+ words solo or headcanon about which song they picked for the performance and why they made that choice for +2 SKILL POINTS, +2 NOTORIETY !
