It’s been a hot hot minute since I’ve made a MiniDisc post, so let’s catch up! Part 1- “What the hell is a MiniDisc?! I came here for vinyl record content!” I know I know, shhh, it’ll be ok *caresses your head as you brain boils within* So it’s safe to say that vinyl isn’t an outdated format theses days, so sayeth Vox.com: “Vinyl has seen a renaissance over the past decade or so, with demand surging even more during the pandemic. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), vinyl sales grew by 28.7 percent in value from 2019 to 2020 to $626 million. Last year also marked the first year vinyl exceeded CDs in total revenue since the 1980s. Manufacturers have struggled to keep up.” I think any youngster could tell you what a record is now that Adele had 500,000 copies of “30” pressed last year, jamming up the already jammed up supply chain. But before you noobs were snagging up copies of wax at Target and Walmart, before vinyl had its resurgence, before maybe some of you readers were born.. there was the MiniDisc 💽 The MiniDisc format launched at the end of 1992; the last MD player was produced in 2011. The MD was slated to be the next step from the CD for the physical format. The short story here is, with initial high price tags on players, and later with the advent of the mp3 format, this baby eased into obscurity nice and slow. https://www.minidisc.org is a brilliant resource for anyone interested in learning about and getting into the MiniDisc format! Part 2: In 2004, I was living in a little studio apt in Orlando that was connected to a larger house; It was the first time I lived alone and I thought it was awesome. That summer we got rocked by 4 hurricanes. I’m from Florida so hurricanes aren’t anything out of the ordinary for me but central Florida wasn’t really a hotspot for them. I made it through with minimal damage to the house, but a tree did fall on the corner of the studio and crack a hole just big enough for water to start seeping in. Fortunately it wasn’t bad enough to cause any damage to me or my stuffs So around that time, I picked up the Sony MZ-NF520D. This was my first MiniDisc player, and its the only one I got when it was released. It was released in 2004 so I must’ve gotten it new, but I feel like I grabbed it off eBay. I didn’t keep as good of records as I do these days so ill have to relay on the old brain to fill in the blanks. This device is a recorder as well as a player so I could make mixtapes (mix discs?) I wanted. PS a ‘mixtape’ is what you might call a ‘playlist’ these days 😂 Also this device was NetMD capable which had software that you could use on a PC to turn your CDs etc into Sony’s proprietary ‘Atrac’ format, which was a higher quality than an .mp3 at the time. I used software called SonicStage to convert and transfer tracks to discs. As for the “TV/Weather/FM part, I know you could use the LCD remote that plugs into the player to listen to the radio, and I’m guessing pick up TV signal audio when that used to be a thing?
