Nordic nations move to connect their air forces in a fleet of 250 combat aircraft
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 28/03/2023 - 08:00 in Military
Several Nordic countries have mobilized to deepen cooperation between their respective air forces to strengthen the region's defenses and create a joint air force with 250 combat aircraft.
The initiative, covered by a joint declaration of intent, or JDI, occurs in the context of persistent security tensions, caused by Russia's war against Ukraine, which are affecting the areas of the Far North and the Baltic Sea.
In an unprecedented feat among the Nordic states, the declaration was signed on March 16 at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, by the commanders of the Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Danish air forces.
The concept of a joint Nordic air force, comprising about 250 modern frontline combat aircraft, has been the subject of periodic discussions between regional governments since the mid-1990s.
The misaligned status of Sweden and Finland continued to be an impediment to the advancement of joint negotiations and initiatives. But with the two countries prepared to join NATO, the Nordic governments are on more solid ground to discuss a common action plan to create the so-called mini-NATO that would provide a formidable and unified capacity of the air force.
The main objective of the joint declaration is to strengthen the cooperation of the air force between the four Nordic states, precipitating concrete joint initiatives to develop a strong regional air defense. The idea is to increase collaboration between the Nordic air forces so that they can operate together in all situations.
The concept of air defense operations, embedded in the declaration, provides for the joint cooperation of the Nordic air force developed along four main lines of action. It also proposes the development of an integrated management structure for the planning and execution of air operations.
In addition, the concept anticipates the development of a flexible and sustainable support system, joint air situational awareness and joint training and exercise activities between the four Nordic air forces.
Major General Rolf Folland, head of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, sees the idea as the basis for the creation of a joint Nordic center for air operations that could also house the United States and Canada under a single command structure.
“There is an obvious interest in a regional initiative for a joint air command on the northern flank of NATO. We know the conditions of the Far North well and we have a lot to learn from each other. With a total of almost 250 modern combat aircraft, this will be a large combat force that must be coordinated,” Folland said.
NATO's last operational headquarters in Norway — the Combined Air Operation Center-3 in Reitan, located east of Bodo — closed in 2008, with responsibility transferred to the Alliance's CAOC Finderup in Denmark.

Cebu People’s Coop unveils 100 new units of modern jeepneys
The Cebu People’s Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CPMPC), one of the biggest and multi-awarded cooperatives in the country, has inaugurated on Saturday its 100 new units of modern jeepneys, also known as PeoplesJeep.
“We thank our partners, our funding institutions in government, government regulators and our transport operators for this new milestone of our cooperative,” Macario G. Quevedo, chief executive officer of CPMPC, said during the blessing on Aug. 15, 2020 of the mini bus-type vehicles in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City. PeoplesJeep’s new garage facility is located at UN Avenue in Mandaue City.
According to Quevedo, these new units of air-conditioned jeepneys will soon ply different routes in Metro Cebu.
CPMPC now has a total of 170 units in its fleet of modern jeepneys.
The CEO revealed that CPMPC is looking to hire at least 300 new drivers in preparation for the new routes that will soon open in Metro Cebu.
“We can employ more in the future including passenger service officers,” he said.
Presently, 12 units of PeoplesJeep are plying the Talamban to Colon area with Route No. 13C.
“We are one with the government in its goal to modernize the public transportation industry in the country, particularly in Cebu,” he said.
The new Durabus Zhongtong Class 2 modern jeepneys are compliant with the Department of Trade and Industry’s Philippine National Standards.
They feature a global positioning system (GPS), speed limiter, front and rear cameras, and indoor TV for entertainment.
“All of our units have air-conditioning systems and foam seats to give our passengers a comfortable ride. They are also equipped with the required CCTV for security purposes,” Quevedo said.
These modern public utility vehicles (PUV) are powered by environmentally-compliant Euro 4/5 diesel engines, significantly reducing their carbon and sulfur emissions.
Fare payment is also very easy and convenient with the implementation of the Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS), which is required under the PUV modernization program of the government.
CPMPC has partnered with Beep Cards operator AF Payments Inc., which is the leading AFCS provider in the country.
“Our acquisition of new units of modern PUVs is our response to the government’s call for a massive industry-wide transport modernization providing efficient, safe and comfortable public transportation to the riding public while at the same time promoting pro-environment initiatives for a cleaner and better tomorrow,” Quevedo stressed.
The Department of Transportation has eyed to to gradually replace old jeepneys with new units to reform the public land transport industry.
State-run lenders Development Bank of the Philippines and Land Bank of the Philippines have specialized loan financing programs that aim to help transport corporations and cooperatives acquire modern and environment-friendly jeepney units.
Quevedo said the program has significantly benefited drivers as they now receive monthly fixed salary and other benefits.
A transport cooperative ideally manages the PUV fleet management and distributes the monthly income to its owners and drivers.
ABOUT
PeoplesJeep is a transport service operation owned and operated by Cebu People’s Multi-Purpose Cooperative, which has over 70,000 members nationwide. The company’s head office is located in 2F CPMPC Business Center 50 T. Abella Street, San Nicholas Proper, Cebu City, Philippines.

Suez: The Yellow Fleet | Al Jazeera World by Al Jazeera English This is the story of fourteen cargo ships accidentally caught up in the June 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and stuck in the Suez Canal while it remained closed for eight years. While their crews managed to maintain them, their decks became so covered in sand over time that they gradually merged with the landscape and were nicknamed "The Yellow Fleet". This film tells this unusual story through the eyes of the crews who manned the ships, on and off, for eight years. "I had an experience which I will never ever forget. I was 19 years old at the time. And it was quite a surprise to find myself right in the middle of a war, at the front seat, literally," Peter Richmond, who was on board the Agapenor in 1967, tells Al Jazeera. When the guns fell silent at the end of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, Egypt closed the Suez Canal and while passenger ships were allowed to complete their journeys, cargo vessels were forced to remain, drop anchor and simply wait. Geopolitics and war brought together cargo vessels from the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Sweden, France, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and the United States into an accidental, international flotilla assembled in a wide section of the Suez Canal known as the Great Bitter Lake. The crews realised that their best option would be to create a spirit of international cooperation, in stark contrast to events in the wider world. So they established a club, the Great Bitter Lake Association, whose remit was to inject some much-needed humour into a difficult situation. The crews began to devise ingenious ways to make life on board less uncomfortable and established their own unofficial, mini-country, with its own traditions, sporting competitions, and even postage stamps. They developed a barter system between ships, trading cargos, meat for fruit and prawns for eggs. They even staged their own Olympic Games. "The idea came mainly from everyone, driven by our desire to do something. We heard about the Olympics so decided we'd do the same on our ships. We had games like weightlifting, high jump, sailing and football. There were prizes and medals for the winners. I kept a silver medal I received for a sailing competition," Uwe Carstens, former sailor on the Nordwind, says. In 1975, the Suez Canal was finally reopened but inertia had caused the engines to seize up and all but two ships had to be towed out of the waterway. Both German vessels started on first try, their turbines turning the propellers and setting them on course for Hamburg. In doing so, they set a record for the longest sea shipping voyage in history: Eight years, 3 months and 5 days. - Subscribe to our channel: https://ift.tt/291RaQr - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://ift.tt/1iHo6G4 - Check our website: https://ift.tt/2lOp4tL

2019 LA Auto Show: Six Star Cars
With the 2019 LA Auto Show just a week away, now’s the perfect time to take a quick look at some of the new models set to be unveiled in the LA Convention Center. Below we’ve listed a half-dozen of our favorites, plus be sure to visit the CarGurus Facebook page and CarGurus YouTube channel during the LA Show press days on November 20th and 21st for updates.
Without further ado, here are six cars that have already piqued our interest.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
Two things tell you all you need to know about the faith Ford has in its all-new and all-electric SUV. First, there’s the name—because you don’t call something a Mustang without also inviting intense scrutiny about its heritage, positioning, and performance. Mustang it is, though, albeit with an added “Mach-E” for good measure.
Second is the fact that Ford’s opening press surrounding the car hasn’t detailed its drivetrain or performance, but simply informed customers that it’ll be taking pre-orders (via a deposit) the moment the official unveil ends on November 18. Now that’s confidence.
Among the options for those pre-ordering a car will be to go for a lavish First Edition model, although Ford stresses that “timing will be critical” for anybody looking to secure a vehicle in this spec. Whatever Mustang Mach-E takes your fancy, it’s hard not to think that with the right styling and performance, this could be one of the hottest cars to go on sale in 2020.
Audi RS Q8
It is unlikely anybody could come away from a drive in Audi’s Q8 and think that what it really needs is more power. However, the imminent arrival of the RS Q8 will provide precisely that, courtesy of Audi Sport’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. With what is likely to be around 600 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, the RS Q8 is expected to get from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds and has already lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:42:2. That—because we know you’re wondering—is a record for a production SUV.
The RS Q8 will be joined in LA by Audi’s latest RS 6 Avant, which is making its debut on US soil along with its five-door coupe sibling, the RS 7. Powered by the same V8 as the RS Q8, the RS 6 can get from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Having never been offered in the US before, it’ll be interesting to see if Audi’s muscular estate is as well-received here as it has been with European buyers.
Porsche 911 Manual
The debut of an old-fashioned manual transmission in a car that’s already been for sale for almost a year would not be normally deemed newsworthy. But when the car in question is a Porsche 911, things are a little different. To a non-car person the surprise would grow further upon learning that by gaining a manual, the latest 992-generation 911 becomes slower rather than faster; for that, thank the fact that Porsche’s dual-clutch automatics now change gear so quickly it’s simply not possible to match them when you throw human limbs into the equation. As a guide, Porsche is quoting a 0-60 time of around 4.0 seconds for the 992 Carrera S manual versus 3.3 for the PDK automatic.
However, speed is not everything in a performance car. What some buyers also crave is the tactile interaction that a manual offers, whether it’s the weighty feel of the clutch pedal, the precise throw of the shifter, or the joy of a perfectly executed heel-toe downshift. And these are precisely the people Porsche is targeting with the installation of its 7-speed manual in the Carrera S and Carrera 4S versions of the 992. Rumour is these cars—and that gearbox—will be on the stand in LA. Watch this space.
Bollinger B1 and B2
Slab-sided and right-angle rich, Bollinger’s built-in-Detroit, all-electric, all-aluminum, all-black LA Auto Show debuts look less sleek than any other vehicles expected to hit the show floor. The B1 “sport utility truck” promises all-wheel drive, 10 inches of wheel travel, 15 inches of ground clearance, and a 200-mile range despite its 5,000-pound curb weight. With 614 horsepower, 668 pound-feet of torque, and a list of removable parts and off-roading angles reminiscent of the Jeep Wrangler’s, we can’t help but be intrigued.
The longer B2 electric pickup truck shares the B1’s powertrain, weight, range, and most of its removable parts, not to mention its full-length central pass-through, which in the B2’s case will accommodate cargo up to 16 feet long. Each of these trucks features air conditioning and 10 110-volt outlets (we can’t help but wonder how those will impact range). At $125,000 each, these vehicles aren’t intended for the masses, which is probably fine for now, as Bollinger hasn’t found a production partner yet.
MINI Cooper John Cooper Works GP and SE
Featuring enough airflow-managing scoops and bulges to shame Ford’s buttressed GT in addition to a huge rear wing/spoiler, the third-generation MINI John Cooper Works GP aims to whet appetites for a limited-edition 3,000-unit high-performance 2020 model. The GP concept and its 301-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder recently lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under 8 minutes, making it the fastest MINI model ever produced. It should reach US showrooms in mid-2020 at a price of $45,750, including an $850 destination fee.
MINI’s stand will also feature the new MINI Cooper SE, an all-new EV based on the MINI Hardtop 2-door launched in 2014. The SE’s electric motor supplies 181 horsepower and 199 lb-ft to the front wheels, getting the car from 0 to 60 in 6.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 93 mph. A full charge will be possible in as little as 4 hours at home, and charging to 80% can happen as quickly as 35 minutes at a public charging station. The SE should reach dealers in March 2020 at an MSRP of $30,750, including a similar $850 destination fee.
Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion Concept
Volkswagen’s fleet of ID. concept cars will welcome its seventh member at the Petersen Auto Museum November 19th with the world debut of the ID. Space Vizzion crossover concept. VW describes this new vehicle as combining the aerodynamics of a gran turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV in a zero-emissions car with a range of up to 300 miles.
Looking like a very long, low, streamlined station wagon, the ID. Space Vizzion, unlike the earlier ID. Vizzion, features a steering wheel and a very large but horizontal digital control panel on the dashboard. Using sustainable interior materials, the cabin features AppleSkin, a vegan alternative to leather that’s made with leftovers from apple-juice production. Volkswagen plans to release a production version in late 2021, with different versions available in North America, Europe, and China.

Red Streak [3.2]
Chapter 03: One of Those Faces [Part 2 of 3. Revised August 2017]
Read the complete fic on AO3
Albacus Shanxi 2157 CE
Albacus passed the omni-tool hardware from hand to hand, worrying a circle around the projection ring with idle thumbs. He was too tired to be nervous, and too well-trained besides, but he allowed himself to indulge in a momentary feeling of dread as he left the main body of his torini in the square and made his way alone to the industrial quarter.
Hannah Shepard’s supply hub was crammed into a rough, riverside area to the west of the city proper, and it was a desolate mess. The entire block looked as though it had been ramshackle to begin with, and the ambiance had been little improved by the orbital debris that he himself had dropped down from above, smashing half of the structures to rubble. A lopsided, impoverished collection of useful but ugly buildings: metal refineries, lumber mills, and several smaller food processing facilities, all of them gaping and silent now.
General Arterius would never approve of Albacus handing any meager scrap of technology to the humans, even this first-tier Elkoss Combine plaything with no melee capability. The General rarely approved of much, as far as diplomatic approaches was concerned, but Albacus had yet to find anything in this situation that was worth compromising several centuries of inherited ideals. Spending a year in his youth as political aide to an asari Matriarch had taught him a thing or two about the importance of negotiation and compromise. The General could take his ambitious, self-serving warmongering and hang with it.
Their hands had already been bloodied; a soiling so deep it would never be cleansed. It made no difference if the Citadel Council appeared in person and ordered the Tenefalx to exterminate civilians and children. The only reason Albacus would knowingly allow his ship to continue to risking innocent lives was if he himself were dead.
An omni-tool was the easiest way to help a solitary human manage the enormous logistical task of supplying the colony, and there were other benefits that had nothing to do with the possibility of mutinous assault. For one, the rudimentary communications app would allow him to contact her in case of emergency, and emergencies were inevitable. It was hard to say which side was more likely to crack first, but it was certain to happen sooner rather than later. He refused to be responsible for catching Shepard’s child in the crossfire. Overloads, sabotage, even an underpowered shield might help the two of them survive a few extra minutes if the storm broke without warning. He owed her that much after dragging her into this: a chance.
He had no concerns about the human female’s ability to handle the tech; she was surprisingly adaptable. So far, most of the humans seemed to be. The human general - Williams - had adjusted to several galaxy-broad political concepts in the span of minutes, and his willingness to cooperate with the surrender had filled Albacus with shaky respect. It was never easy to relent to a superior enemy force with minimal bloodshed - Albacus understood that all too well from his own forced cooperation with Arterius.
As he approached the depot entrance, he nodded to Obren Ilmek, taking note of the tired ashen patina of the lieutenant’s plates. He would require a relief soon; the torin looked liable to die on his feet if he was forced to stand much longer. Albacus had personally posted his own sub-lieutenant to Shepard’s guard detail - he trusted Ilmek not to mindlessly open fire over a translator glitch. He was a just and reasonable torin with two decades of service on his record, nearly half of those aboard the Tenefalx. Albacus would have trusted him to guard his own blessed matrem, had she still been living.
For now, General Arterius was allowing Albacus his attempt at cooperation. Nonetheless, Albacus had made every attempt to keep Shepard and her child surrounded by his own trusted hands, in case Arterius’ feelings suddenly changed. Albacus knew the Tenefalx crew like the back of his own hand, and was likewise familiar with the sister crews of the Miriton and the Bexitani, but the rest of the shakedown fleet was a mishmash of junior officers fresh out of the recruitment hall, with General Arterius’ own hot-headed brother among them. None of them were ready to be considered real falxi of the Blackwatch, and Albacus would have loved nothing more than to send them all home to their compulsory service colleges. The juniors were far too inexperienced, far too headstrong and eager for blood, to be trusted alone with human prisoners.
Especially not Shepard, he thought. She was unpredictable in her own right.
“All quiet here, Regidonis.” Ilmek reported, shuffling his armor around a stiff neck. “Tulubri is inside. She said the human started working as soon as the sun came up.”
“Has the mother given you any trouble?”
“No, not as long as the child is in her sight.”
“I suppose at this stage, we can count that as progress.”
Albacus shoved open the stiff, un-powered door and stepped into the cavernous darkness beyond.
As his eyes adjusted, he could see Sergeant Tulubri standing at attention, thankfully without a weapon drawn. Ris Tulubri was his best hand-to-hand practitioner; she could disarm a charging krogan just by looking at him. If Shepard started trouble, he knew this was the tarin who could end it swift and clean, without an untimely death on either side.
For a moment, Albacus thought he might be imagining things in the dark, but after a few seconds of squinting, he realized that the shadowy blur near Tulubri’s right side was in fact the human child, and she was holding the sergeant’s hand like it was made of precious salarian spunweb. Not merely holding Tulubri’s hand, she seemed to be studying it, pulling the fingers right down to her tiny face, and as Albacus approached, he saw why. The tarin had removed her glove to show off the long, smooth lines of her talons. Surprisingly intimate for the sergeant - he had never known her to be sentimental before. Then again, he reflected, he had never seen her around a puer, much less an alien one.
“Getting friendly, I see.”
Tulubri gave him a polite nod, then looked down at the little one, her mandibles flickering in an embarrassed grin.
“She’s very curious, and kind of cute, for a monkey. She reminds me of my fratliae, back on the Citadel.”
“Still,” he teased, allowing a welcome bit of warmth into his sub-vocals for once. “Never thought I would see you barehanded and petting a puer.”
“Is it still a puer if it’s a monkey?” she asked, rubbing one talon curiously along the soft and fleshy side of the little human’s face.
“She’s not a monkey,” said a voice. Albacus dimly recognized Shepard’s drawl, though she was calling down from high above him, somewhere near the ceiling. Like some kind of spirit. “She’s a great ape.”
He peered deeper into the shadows and spotted Shepard dangling from a large steel shelf as if she were climbing a tree, apparently doing her utmost to remain true to her family’s distinguished primate origins. When she prised open a sealed bin and then poked her head inside, she wretched. Reeling away from the stench, she barely kept her grip on the scaffold.
“No, it’s all bad. Once we lost the air conditioning it was a fool’s hope anyway. Damn.”
So far, Shepard had been economical with her words in front of him - this felt like her longest sentence so far.
“What do you have left?” He asked, watching Shepard scrambling back down to solid ground.
“Almost nothing.” She said with finality.
He palmed the omni-tool and begged the spirits for a damned reprieve.
Shepard jumped the last few meters to the floor, and when she stood at her full height, Albacus was once again surprised by her stature. She seemed taller by half than the rest of the humans in the colony, with arms and legs almost as long as a full-grown tarin’s. Nor did she seem intimidated by much, with the exception of any threats to her child’s well being.
Whenever she spoke to him, she looked him square in the eyes; something that her own general had been too dwarfed to attempt.
After measuring Albacus’ intentions with another one of her perceptive once-overs, she wiped her hands on an immaculate white cloth that was wound around her torso and sighed.
“The computer has been down since day three of the bombardment,” she said, looking as if she were trying to internally calculate several large figures all at once. “This morning, I’ve been trying to take an inventory of this storehouse, but it’s slow going… damn near impossible.”
“I have something that may help with that,” he said. He held out the small hand attachment of the Elkoss Cipher Mini. “I smuggled you an omni-tool.”
“Is that one of those…” She floated her right hand around her opposite forearm, mimicking the familiar haptic interface.
“It is. I pre-loaded it with all the data we could mine from your storage media; one of my engineers was up all night cobbling this together. A few things were lost or corrupted, but it should be usable for the most part.” He tossed it to her, indicated how to fasten it to her wrist and power it on. “I apologize, but this model does not transform into anything lethal.”
“Figures.” She said, as the omni-tool flared to life on her arm.
As soon as the omni-tool was illuminated, Shepard’s child let go of Tulubri and rushed to her mother’s side with a reverent ooooooh. Shining, bug-like eyes stared into the glowing orange hologram with unabashed wonder.
“Yes, Jane. Definitely ‘oooooh.’”
The child reached out to touch it. Shepard looked to Albacus, her expression rock-hard.
“Is it safe?”
“Completely.”
She prodded it a few more times with a bare fingertip, just to be sure, and then lowered her arm within reach of the little one.
“Ooooooooh” the child said again, squeezing the orange hologram between her many chubby fingers. “Orange!”
“Jane, I need to talk to Captain Regidonis now. It’s important.” She withdrew her arm, but was well prepared to redirect the child’s frustrated whine. “Hey, where’s Lionel? You should show him to Sergeant Tulubri.”
“Okay! Tulu-bee, come find Lionel. It’s important!”
With the child and the deadly hand-to-hand tactician sufficiently distracted, Shepard approached and held out her left arm.
“Show me,” she said.
He slowly walked her through the menus that would pull up the relevant documentation; shipping receipts, inventory records, maps of her suppliers. She caught on quickly.
“There are some viable crops in the southern quadrant, soybeans maybe.” In an unconscious, droning voice, she explained the contents of her ledgers. Endless financial figures and budget estimates whizzed by, which Albacus’ translator could process, but he himself could not. “The corn might be ready in a few weeks, if it’s still standing. I have no idea what sort of yield we could expect, but someone should be assigned to comb the farms, in case there’s anything we can salvage.”
“I can have a junior detail supervise a small group of cooperative human workers - how many do you need?”
“Can’t your men drive a tractor?” She paused to look into his face, and her soft, foreign expression was similar to one he’d witnessed on more than one asari: sarcasm. Was she joking with him? In the middle of a crisis? He blinked.
“Nevermind,” she amended, voice flattening out. “A dozen farmhands should do, if you allow them to use a transport.”
Slowly, clumsily, she pulled up a map, then pointed to several areas of interest.
“I have some storehouses in the north. Dried goods: rice, flour, beans. Some of the apples and root vegetables are probably still edible. Cans and boxes too, we can use all of it. I’ll need a full shipment as soon as possible. Send a convoy. And this time, don’t blow it up.”
“Anything else?”
She stared at the omni-tool and tried swiping through a few screens, but quickly got lost in a sub-menu, unable to find the return command.
“Here, like this.” He reached over her shoulder and tapped her back to the correct area. Despite his proximity, his armor, his visible weaponry, Shepard didn’t flinch, or even blink, when he got too close. Her fortitude continued to impress.
She studied the omni-tool again, frowning. “Looks like… a mess. In the best case, we’ve got enough supplies in remote storage to last a few weeks. We lost too much in the bombardment. Half the farmland is as good as salted now, and we don’t have time to turn it over. If your people are planning to hold this colony for any length of time, additional supplies will have to come from off-world.”
“The General will never allow your ships through his blockade. Aid will come through us or not at all.”
“Do you have spare rations?”
She might have been kidding, but he took the question seriously.
“Unfortunately no. We have different protein structures - our food would be useless to you, possibly deadly - never mind that we barely have enough for ourselves. I might have some levo relief stocks available, but it would be asari, salarian… completely foreign. Chemically sound, but you might have a difficult time convincing your people to take it.”
“If you can get it to me, I can cram it down their throats.”
“Maybe I could--” he cut himself off. It would be a huge risk, trying to slide a message under the General’s watch. Benezia would help, Albacus had no doubt about that, but the General would be a problem. Once an asari Matriarch saw what was going on down here, Arterius’ grandiose theatre of war unearned would be as good as curtained.
“What?” Shepard asked, turning to face him more directly.
He buried the hope for now. See if his restless torini would settle into a work detail. See if some semblance of cohesion could be maintained for more than an hour. Then he could worry about sending smoke signals to Benezia. The Matriarch had taught him that, after all: always walk the longest roads one step at a time.
“Preparations to secure your supplies from the north and south will start within the hour.” he said, willfully refocusing on problems that were immediately solvable. “If you like, I could assign a supervised work detail to help you clear away this mess, maybe restore some power. I understand that since you agreed to assist me, there have been some tensions between you and the other colonists--”
“Nothing fixes tension like sharing a work load. Yeah. Send them over. I’ll give a few sad sacks something to do. Keep ‘em busy, and show them I’m not feeding you all of humanity’s secrets.”
Firmly, suddenly, she grabbed hold of him, enclosing his gloved palm between her many strong fingers.
“Thank you,” she said. “For taking this on.”
Her hand squeezed his. Once, strong and certain. Then she disappeared into the shadows, calling for the little one named Jane.

The new Mini Electric 2020 is really a better looking BMW i3
In some parts of the world, it’s known as the Mini Electric. In other regions, it’s called the Mini Cooper SE; but wherever it has been introduced, there has been unequivocal opinion that the electric car is an attractively designed, undeniably recognisable Mini, taking the technology of the BMW i3 and repacking it into the signature Cooper design. While parent company BMW’s new 4-series has been drawing mixed reactions of late with its newly re-designed grille, the new Mini Cooper SE electric continues to inspire passionate devotion with its cute looks and well engineered technology.
“We believe this launch will be a tipping point for the adoption of electric cars in this country,” declared David George, managing director of Mini UK on occasion of its debut in the market. Indeed, given its unmistakable good looks, Mini Coopers from across the generations have, on occasion become lead actors in Hollywood films, representing urban insouciance for the driver who demands his/her ride to be more than just functional but also fun.
The new Mini Cooper SE 2020 brings Maximum Enjoyment
In 1969, the original British Mini acted with Michael Caine in the gold-heist film The Italian Job. In 2003, the remake of that movie also starred the next generation Mini Cooper: if we digress, it’s only to reaffirm the point that cars are more often used as mere props rather than co-equal stars in movies.
Electrification is not new to Mini. In fact, the Mini Cooper SE is not even the marque’s first electric car. Though the Mini E officially debuted in 2008 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, three electric Minis were already in use during the 2003 remake of The Italian Job to satisfy the subway authorities concerns over possible carbon monoxide poisoning. In fact, the Mini was the platform instrumental in enabling the BMW Group, the world’s first major car manufacturer to deploy a fleet of more than 500 all-electric vehicles for private use – it’s tacit agreement, if not testament to the Mini Coopers’ blend of aesthetics and performance.
Mini Cooper SE brings Quintessential Brit styling to the BMW i3
At a glance, the Mini Cooper SE is looks like a regular Mini but flashy neon yellow trim elements, unusual rims, and the closed radiator grille are subtle but noticeable details that this Mini Cooper is no an ordinary Mini but an electric one. Borrowing the motor from the BMW i3s, the Mini Electric produces 184 horses and 270Nm of torque, in fact, we dare say, it’s essentially a better looking BMW i3 at an a more attractive price point.
Running 235km to 270km on a full charge, cynics might complain about its significantly lower range than competing electric vehicles (i.e. Hyundai Kona Electric or Jaguar i-Pace). They might even decry the lack of alacrity when compared to a Chevrolet Bolt or Nissan Leaf Plus, but what it “lacks”, the Mini makes up with defiant intelligence: this sort of compromise keeps the battery size, weight and charging time manageable: The T-shaped, 12 module 32.6kWh battery is ingeniously placed in the vehicle floor between the front seats and below the rear seats. ensuring that boot space hasn’t been compromised unlike most of the competing EVs out there.
When critics complain it’s not as zippy as the competition, it’s definitely no slouch either. Completing its century sprint in 7.3 seconds, the Mini Electric lurches strong off the line and handles like a F1 candidate. Why? Intelligent design means that Cooper SE is properly balanced with 58/42 front-to-rear weight distribution, considerably better than that of a Cooper S. Furthermore, despite riding 18mm higher than in the conventionally powered model – to provide clearance for the battery – the Mini Electric’s center of gravity is functionally 30.5mm lower.
In compact, crowded city states like Singapore: the Mini Cooper SE checks the trifecta of value, performance and aesthetics. You simply will not find a more pleasurable EV experience than the Mini Electric.

The 2019 Genesis G70 2.0T Manual Is Fun and Fleet-Footed
CABAZON, California—The traffic circle invited me to play, so I took the outside lane and tried to squeal the Michelins on my way to the third exit, the one for I-10 eastbound. From the inside lane, a plodding Mini Cooper veered for the second right, the one for Main Street, giving the 2019 Genesis G70 2.0T Sport M/T another way to prove itself. The strong Brembo brakes front and rear assured that neither the Mini nor I paid a price. Indeed, still in third gear, I nudged back into the accelerator and bounded up the ramp with alacrity.
It was the sixth night in my weeklong test, and the car was delivering new ways to please. Fifteen months ago, at the launch of the G70 series in South Korea, we got details on the four-cylinder version that would complement the V-6 envisioned as the mainstay of this all-new sport sedan. As it turns out, the four-cylinder G70 2.0T Sport M/T—it sounds Pythagorean, not Korean—is something special and will accomplish a few things.
First, all five of the 2.0T trim levels are offered at a wholly reasonable price point in the mid- to upper-$30,000 range. My test car stickered at $38,895 including destination and delivery. For a small premium over a well-equipped Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, the buyer gets a fast, fun, feature-filled sedan that’s distinguished-looking, sleek, and sporty. Choose between rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations, and in those other trims, let an eight-speed automatic transmission handle the business. But my car, the top four-cylinder variant, has rear-drive and a six-speed manual. For anyone who looks at a traffic circle as a playground, the 2.0T Sport M/T will be seen as an accomplishment: a driver’s car that gives the G70 series a lot of credibility, the automotive equivalent of climbing a high peak without bottled oxygen. It’s perfect for street racers who are graduating to greater seriousness and four doors with a roomier interior.
Besides the 19-inch wheels and Brembo brakes, the 2.0T Sport M/T comes with a multi-plate limited-slip rear differential, sport exhaust system, and handbrake to replace the electronic parking brake of the other models. Three aluminum pedal caps and a dead pedal in the driver’s footwell present an engaging proposition. The pedals are well-positioned, and it is possible to heel-and-toe downshift. But as happy as I was to use them, they’re also my biggest complaint about the car because of the car’s occasional recalcitrance to launching smartly from a stop. The problem with the 2.0T Sport M/T starts with a tricky, sluggish throttle opening. When matching revs during downshifts, I took to double-pumping the accelerator to ensure response. Combine this lassitude with an indecipherable clutch release, and getting off the line smoothly proved a bit chancy. As with training a handsome but inattentive young spaniel, it is understood to be worth the effort.
On the other hand, it’s hard to say enough about the smooth six-speed’s well-spaced ratios and the saucy character it gives the car, although we do wish it had a bit more positivity to its engagement. Sixth gear is the only overdrive, so midrange response is strong in all lower gears. In these moments, the note from the twin-outlet exhaust transforms from a hum to a howl. Under the hood, the direct-injection turbocharged four may not make any worthwhile sounds of its own, but it delivers 255 horsepower—3 more than the 2.0T with the eight-speed automatic—and 260 lb-ft of torque from 1,400 rpm, which explains, for example, the ability to resume in third gear after braking for the Mini. Boost from the turbo comes without whoop or whine. The 0 to 60 mph dash ends in about 6.0 seconds, and watch for 100 mph sooner than expected. Indeed, the V-6 makes 115 horsepower beyond the four, but then the G70 is more nose-heavy.
Besides the capable powertrain, the 2.0T Sport M/T delights with its chassis dynamics. The platform’s stability is always reassuring, steering has a just-right feel (especially with the driving mode set to Sport), and the suspension delivers a beautiful balance between taut and cushy. Body motions are well controlled in every situation. The car weighs 3,580 pounds, which is 64 pounds more than eight-speed automatic RWD variants of the 2.0T but 307 pounds less than a V-6 model with AWD. The weight seemed reasonable and reasonably well-managed, and the word “sumo” only floated through my mind once or twice.
For all this speed and agility, the 2.0T Sport M/T offers a sedan’s traditional practicality and comfort. Wind noise is a non-factor, so cocooning occupants can cherish the 15-speaker, 660-watt sound system that would leave Joseph Haydn pleased upon hearing the adagio movement of his Symphony Number 102. The infotainment system incorporates smartphone mirroring and proffers enough settings and submenus to satisfy Radar O’Reilly. Layout of the minor controls is very straightforward.
The 2.0T Sport M/T also happens to be a beautiful car with graceful roofline, flaring fenders, and elegant wheels. Sparkling in Adriatic blue, my example looked wonderful. I felt ambivalent about the bright body trim, but highest compliments go to the face that makes do without gauche and self-conscious display of the front air intakes. The interior, which is pretty conventional, doesn’t quite say “all-new design,” and the plastic door panels say “economy car.” But the leather-wrapped, power-tilting-and-telescoping steering wheel is perfect, and the leather-covered heated and ventilated front seats were very nice.
In sum, the G70 2.0T Sport M/T may take some practice, but it abounds in verve and seems like a good value for a rear-drive car with fine handling characteristics and a decent amount of snort. Apologies for not assessing the level of driver-assistance features on offer or even turning on the cruise control—I was having too much fun driving.
