"My heart has stilled" 2HA Meta (Chapter 2)
2HA’s a book that’s filled with literally references. I’ve always wanted to explain them all, but I couldn’t find the right medium to do so. Then along came the english translation and it made it a lot easier to use it as a basis to explain XD
As a matter of fact, did you know there’s a famous line at the start of Chapter 2? XD
“MY HEART HAS STILLED, and my thoughts turned to ash / Yet unexpectedly, the light of spring shines through the cold night. / Could it be that the heavens pity the blade of grass in the secluded valley? / Yet I fear that the world is unpredictable and full only of hardship.” - 2HA Chapter 2 This Venerable One Lives
This is actually a line from the Teochew Opera “Lady Mo Chou 莫愁女.” Lady Mo Chou was a dancer/singer born in the Chu State near the end of the Waring states. She was so good at her craft that the palace caught wind of it and the King of Chu kept her as a concubine. In the palace, she got to know a few people, one of which was Qu Yuan (I’ve talked about one of his works before lol.). Her dance and song was subsequently integrated into folk songs, and ultimately Chu ci.
This folk story was then made into an award winning Opera by the Nanjing Yue Opera Troupe in 1983. The opera is set in the the Yongle period (1403—1424) of the Ming Dynasty. Xu Cheng, the grandson of Xu Da (king of Zhongshan), loved Mo Chou the maid, who was tall and beautiful, and he poured out his love to her. Mo Chou was then moved by his pure feelings. Unexpectedly, Xu Cheng's grandmother forced betrothed her grandson to Qiu Caiyun, the prime minister's daughter. On the wedding night, the bride learns from the palace maids about the hidden love between Xu Cheng and Mo Chou. She tricks Mo Chou and gouges out her eyes, then drowns her in a lake. Xu Cheng was so angry that he jumped into the lake as well, resulting in a double tragedy.
If you want to experience what Moran was listening to (lmao the warbling), listen to 2:50-4:11
youtube
(obviously, Meatbun isn’t being historically accurate because this was song written in 1983 LOL) The song was also composed by He Zhanhao, the same dude who composed the famous Butterfly Lovers.

“you know you’re singing to your headphones out loud, right” au for moshang plz sqh singing modern songs that mbj doesn't know and being hella confused 🥺
Featuring karaoke-loving Shang Qinghua who gets a bit too drunk at a Cang Qiong mountain gathering, and he goes all out.
Or when Mobei Jun wonders why Shang Qinghua is singing about another man called Liang Shan Bo.
---
Sometimes, he thinks about his old life before he ever had the misfortune of landing in a world of his own creation, with an annoying gaming AI system of sorts hounding his every move (in the beginning) or turning up at the most inopportune times just when he thinks it’s finally gone and left him alone (more recently).
Shang Qinghua remembers not having many friends when he was still Shang Qinghua, when ‘向天打飞机 Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky’ was still merely his writing Weibo account moniker and when he had millions of people looking up to him for his crucial contributions in writing this amazing story about his son Luo Binghe and the way he overcame all odds to become a success with a harem of gorgeous women at his feet (damn you, Peerless Cucumber bro!).
Back in those days, he lived off cup noodles and instant coffee. If he didn’t have to leave the house, Shang Qinghua would simply curl up in front of his laptop, either writing for his novel or watching shows (clears his throat) - actual shows! Chinese period dramas were his favourite, where a skilled and intelligent consort in the harem would outwit all the other women to be with her one true love, the Emperor, who falls irrevocably in love with her.
And when he got bored, he switched from the laptop to his television to engage in his second most favourite hobby - Chinese karaoke. Going out to a karaoke bar would require some level of socializing, and also a few friends so he gets more bang out of his buck from what he pays for the room, but at home?
With advanced technology and a tiny ass microphone in either shining gold or silver, Shang Qinghua’s home entertainment system was his very own personal karaoke room, His tiny mic even had that echo-y effect on.
Shang Qinghua has a thing for classic Chinese songs - ‘The New Butterfly Dream’, ‘Liang Shan Bo and Juliet’, The Moon Represents My Heart‘ - and contemporary karaoke must-haves, like Wang Fei. For an embarrassing few days, the Chinese version of Baby Shark was a veritable earworm as well.
After transmigrating into his own story set in ancient times, where he lives without technology, Shang Qinghua would be lying if he said he didn’t miss the Internet. Laptops would be incredibly handy, and so would switches for lights, definitely indoor plumbing for toilets, and induction stoves. Phones too, that would be nice, rather than having to ‘send word’ with letters.
Of course, there is no karaoke bar or machine for him.
Not all is bad though. At least he transmigrated to Shang Qinghua in this world as a baby, so it’s not as if he was surviving on Internet and technology one day and left to do everything manually the next day since someone was always taking care of him. Peerless Cucumber bro, of course, wasn’t as lucky, but the man has definitely taken to this world (and his son!!) like a fish to water.
And as for himself, Shang Qinghua does not need to envy Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe either, because somehow, he has gotten the man of his dreams too, even if said man was a little cruel and rude to him in the beginning.
He has the love of his life (coughs coughs) and they’re stuck in this world for the rest of his life. What more is there to want? Not to mention how his cup of instant noodles betrayed him at the last moment, resulting in his death! It is slightly safer, ironically, to be in this world instead.
All is good except... well...
===
Shen Qingqiu marvels at the sight before him, torn between wanting to step in to stop Shang Qinghua, or watch this farce unfold.
He sometimes forgets where he, or where Shang Qinghua, who has been in this world longer than he, came from. They don’t always talk about the past when they meet, and aside from the occasional meetups, Shen Yuan is a part of him that doesn’t surface, not when he is with Luo Binghe.
Shang Qinghua, on the other hand, grew up here, and aside from referring to Shen Qingqiu by his Weibo account name, he seems otherwise well-adjusted, no hint of modern online writer Shang Qinghua in sight. It doesn’t feel as if he misses their original world either.
This evening, however, memories of modern times slap him in the face, quite literally.
“Shizun!” Luo Binghe calls, frantic, tugging him back into his embrace out of Shang Qinghua’s way. Once Shen Qingqiu is safe in his arms, his eyes narrow at the bumbling, drunk idiot causing a scene in the dinner hall, “Shang Qinghua...”
Shang Qinghua stops where he is, and then before any one can stop him, he picks up a pair of chopsticks, brings it to his mouth, and begins bellowing his way through-
-Jay Chou’s Hair Like Snow.
“Shizun, are you alright?” Luo Binghe fusses, his hands coming up to cup Shen Qingqiu’s face when his Shizun doesn’t so much as respond to him. “Were you hurt? Did he hurt you? How’re you feeling? We’ll go back home now-”
“What is he singing?” Qi Qingqi frowns in disgust.
They all wince when Shang Qinghua attempts to hit a high note, but fails miserably.
Fuck me, Shen Qingqiu thinks, his eyes impossibly wide, who knew Airplane bro was such a karaoke fanatic?
“... maybe he is possessed by a malevolent spirit? Or perhaps this is an unidentified curse?” asks Ming Fan.
“Or is this some new form of cultivation?” asks Ning Yingying, curious.
Yue Qingyuan, seated at the front of the dining hall, cannot help but be concerned for him as well. “Shall we call Mu-shidi to take a look at him-”
They’ve gathered for their annual meeting - a condition that Yue Qingyuan has set in place a few years ago after Luo Binghe ‘stole’ (married!) him away from Cang Qiong Peak - and although Shang Qinghua said he didn’t mind that Mobei Jun was unable to accompany him today, he spent most of the dinner drinking alcohol while in a melancholic state instead.
Who knew that Shang Qinghua was a singing drunk?!
Hence their current predicament.
At the Sect Master’s words, Shang Qinghua suddenly turns around and looks at Shen Qingqiu. HIccuping twice, he then beams, “Cucumber-”
Shen Qingqiu has never moved that fast in his life. Within a fraction of a second, he has his hand pressed over Shang Qinghua’s mouth, holding onto him from the back.
“Cucumber?” everyone choruses in confusion.
“I believe your Shang-shishu has had a little too much to drink,” Shen Qingqiu clears his throat, nodding at everyone else. “We should... send him back to Mobei. Isn’t that right, Binghe?”
His disciple, his husband, still has on an affronted, murderous look for how Shang Qinghua almost brained Shen Qingqiu with his flailing arms in his drunken fit. The moment Shen Qingqiu asks, however, his expression morphs into something so soft and full of love that everyone who sees it chokes.
“Of course,” Luo Binghe smiles, devotion apparent in his eyes. “Anything Shizun wants.”
===
The words that are tumbling out of Shang Qinghua’s mouth are entirely incomprehensible, and so are the tunes he’s humming into his ear.
Mobei Jun thought he had gotten used to Shang Qinghua’s eccentric mannerisms, and also thought he knew everything about his husband, so many years later. Shang Qinghua is mumbling Chinese alright, but none of the characters put together make any sense.
Who is Liang Shan Bo? And who the hell is Juliet?!
His mood taking a turn for the worse, Mobei Jun hoists Shang Qinghua up further on his back.
After getting so drunk, the idiot had the gall to demand for a piggy-back from the throne room to their bedroom. Mobei Jun has never once suffered such indignity in his years of living. A bridal carry? Of course, anytime. A piggy-back? As if he was some beast to be tamed?
Well this definitely has to be a first.
While he was stewing in his thoughts, Shang Qinghua switches from that song to another one, and a stream of ‘du du du lu du lu’ emerges from his lips... AND something about... a sha yu? What the hell is that?!
Shang Qinghua lazily lifts his right hand as they approach their room, balls it into a fist and puts it to his mouth, as if he’s holding something, and whatever monstrosity Shang Qinghua is singing, his voice gets even louder.
Mobei Jun tosses Shang Qinghua off his back unceremoniously and onto the soft bed. Interrupted, Shang Qinghua blinks, his vision blurry, and is about to catch his breath and start singing again when his husband climbs in after him. Trapping Shang Qinghua with his entire weight, Mobei Jun seals his lips with a kiss.
“... My king...” Shang Qinghua murmurs in a daze, when Mobei Jun pulls back a few minutes later, his breaths coming out as short, harsh pants. “My king...”
“That’s right,” he says with a glower. “I’m your Da Wang, your husband.”
Mobei Jun doesn’t know who Liang Shan Bo is, but he’s going to make sure no other man’s name ever leaves Shang Qinghua’s lips again when they’re together.
And when his husband finally sobers up, he’s going to have a lot to answer for.

Songs Mentioned (YouTube Links in Comments):
The New Butterfly Dream 新鸳鸯蝴蝶梦 - A Chinese classic, sung by Huang An but done beautifully by legendary god of singing Fei Yu Qing and singing partner for the song A Yun Ga
Liang Shan Bo and Juliet 梁山伯与朱丽叶 - A Taiwanese contemporary classic of sorts by Genie Zhuo, most Chinese millennials would definitely have sang this at a karaoke once in their lives - Song is inspired by Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai, the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet to some extent - They both die in the end and become butterflies, so they’re also called the Butterfly Lovers.
The Moon Represents My Heart 月亮代表我的心 - ANOTHER CLASSIC CLASSIC!!!
Baby Shark (Chi. Ver) - ˆThe baby shark hype did move to China, and it’s pretty hilarious LMAO and in Chinese, shark is 鲨鱼 (sha yu) but I’m assuming that in this world, there isn’t a shark kind of animal of sorts? So Mobei Jun and everyone else except SQQ wouldn’t know what a shark is or looks like?!
Hair Like Snow 发如雪 - By Jay Chou, another classic that all Chinese millennials would have sang in a karaoke bar
Wang Fei 王妃 - Jam Hsiao’s version is known best, and it’s pretty epic, not that anyone can reach any of the high notes in the chorus, but does that stop us from trying?!! Hell no!!!
---
Notes: My first Moshang?!! That didn’t really have a lot of Moshang time?! But thanks anon, hope this sort of works?!

A Flower in the Emperors Palace
Chapter 5
In the Garden
Credit to @dannydarzuski for commissioning my story.
Giggling and talking among themselves the hand maidens put Ming Yue into some of the most breathtaking clothing she was ever put in. She honestly wasn’t too sure where the clothing came from, much less how it fit her so well. All she could think about was perhaps these clothes belonged to his previous wife and she just happened to fit them properly.
“So...how did the emperor and the emperor meet?” The room went quiet at Ming Yue’s question. For a moment it looked like they weren’t going to answer. Only for Hungi to answer for them.
“It was the fall of a city in the west. She had been held captive there by several people. She was a navigator to a traveling troop that had gone there to get spices in exchange for rice. They got more than spice...they got a dagger to the heart, and the leaders took the females and caged them...tried to train them to do tricks. By the time the emperor got there there were only two females left in the cage while six more were killed. The emperor took them in...he fell in love with her, took her as his wife...and she betrayed him by cheating on him...such a gastly way to reward him for his efforts.” Hungi crossed his arms. The other females nodded.
“He gave her everything she could ever ask for...yet she still did this.” A hand maid blushed as she spoke, running her fingers through Ming Yue’s hair.
“Alright, no more talk about the traitor. Let's get you into your dress.” A maid held up the sparkling blue dress.
Ming Yue walked out of the dressing room. The hanfu was high with silk sleeves and a blue ribbon tied around her waist. It reminded her of how the water looked when the sun shined on it. She liked it very much. Even Hangi nodded his liking for it as they left the room to head to the garden.
“Where does the emperor get my clothing?” She asked Hangi. Hangi smiled as he buffed out his chest.
“I’m very good at finding sizes. I don’t actually have to size you up...do you like it?” He motioned to the dresses. So it was Hangi who had the dresses made for her.
“It looks nice.” She told him. He smiled proudly, opening the door into the gardens. Of course it was still the Emperor who had the dresses made for her.
Before her was a rather large red blanket, with cushions, and pillows. In the middle was a table with a few bowls of different kinds of rice balls, and wine within a bowl of ice. Candles lined the small spot, as well as small sticks of incense. Which probably warded off the bugs.
Ming Yue couldn’t help but wonder what could have possibly gotten him to take such an interest in her? Much less his reasons to invite her outside in the first place. Perhaps he likes hearing about her land, normally that would mean he’s thinking of taking it over? If that's it she wanted nothing to do with it. She turns to go back inside, only to come nose to nose with Wukong himself.
Ming Yue jumps back and hears him speaking to her.
“Are we going to sit?” He asked motioning to the cushions. Ming Yue slowly nods and sits down on one of the cushions.
A small plate of three different rice balls were placed in front of her, as well as a glass of what smelled like cherry wine. She waited for the Emperor to take the first bite before she too began to eat. It was the proper thing to do. One had a bit of a spicy scent to it, upon taking a bite she could see the curry within. It tasted pretty good to her, she refused to eat fast though. Wukong seemed to be looking at her as she ate.
“Is it to your liking?” She nodded as she chewed.
“It's nice, especially with this chill in the air.” Wukong’s ears perked up as he looked around. He wasn’t a good gadge on if it were hot or cold outside.
“Are you cold?” He asked her.
“No no. I’m fine, it's right for being outside. There's a light cool breeze that makes the air quite pleasant.” She sipped the wine, not too much favoring alcohol too much, but she feared that if she were to deny the beverage she might get whipped.
As she said this, there was a light breeze that made Wukongs hair brush his forehead. She blushed as she went back to her food. It didn’t go unnoticed by Wukong.
He took a bite of his own food.
They ate in silence for a moment as they contemplated what else to talk about, in all honesty Wukong could just sit there and look at her and be quite content for the rest of his days. Which was a very very long time.
“So I’ve been told by the gardener that you’ve planted a vegetable garden?” Wukong sipped the wine and swirled it around.
Uh oh! Was that against the rules? Should she not have done that? Oh she was in trouble now.
“Yes sire, I did. The kitchen staff has to go down to earth to obtain some and I figured it would be good for them, as well as moneywise if we just planted those items here.” She told him. Wukong looked impressed as he put his glass back down.
Wukong noticed she had yet to look at him. She seemed very interested in the plate; there were still two rice balls. He scooted a little closer to her. They weren’t too far apart sitting next to one another.
“You may look at me if you wish.” His voice was low and slightly full of heat. She shook her head. Her eyes still looked down at her hands. She couldn’t look at him, it was disrespectful.
“I am...but a humble female Sire. I am not at liberty to look at you, being in your presence is a gift enough.” She informed him. There was a small smile that spread across his face. So she thought being with him was a present. However, his heart didn’t believe it was enough to just be next to her. It would never be enough until she was in his arms.
Ming Yue felt a soft hand under her chin. Slowly pulling her up to look him in the eyes. She didn’t push away from him, actually she loved the way his golden eyes looked. Especially with how they sparkled in the moonlight.
Wukong loved how her face was just so round, and the grey fur looked like the moon light. It even looked as if she were glowing. His thumb ran along her flushed skin before he realized they had been sitting there for a little bit now.
“We un...better start eating or it’ll get cold.” Ming Yue whispered before turning back to her own food.
A sudden gust of wind caused all the torches and candles to go out. Much to their amazement the result caused the whole sky to light up with stars. Wukong was about to call the butler to light the torches back, but the exclamation from his guest caused him to stop.
“Wow...you can see the stars so well from heaven.” He turned to look at the stars and realized that in fact they were a lot more pronounced up here. He smiled and nodded his head.
“Indeed.” He said as he looked around at the female grey monkey. She looked so content sitting there looking up. She slowly placed another piece of the rice ball into her mouth and chewed slowly like the sky was a great show to watch. At least this way he could look at her, and she’d never know.
“How long did it take?” Wukong wasn’t expecting her to ask anything, much less that.
“To what?” He inquired sipping the wine as he sat back on the cushion looking up. His arm under his head.
“To defeat the jade emperor?” Ming Yue wasn’t too sure why she asked that, or even if she would get in trouble for asking about it.
“A few hours. His army was what did him in.” he didn’t elaborate. She didn’t seem to ask why either. She turned to look at him as she too lay down looking up at the stars.
“And you did it to save your people.” She looked comfortable like that. “I read that he was killing off a lot of your people. If it were me, and I was as strong as you...I think I would have done the same thing to save my people.” She told him. This surprised him, no one had ever told him that they would have done the same thing. Normally it was why, and your so cruel, a tyrant for killing so many soldiers who had families and friends to return to. Lies, she must have been lying to him.
“I mean I am here looking to marry a noble to preserve my species, as well as for love.” She looked at him with a smile.
His heart beat against his chest, he was sure she could see the color rising to his cheeks. He couldn’t tell for a moment if she had stabbed him in the heart. He could hear his heart beating...he slowly looked down and up again. She had returned to looking at the stars. Her third rice ball in her hands. There was no wound in his heart, he wasn’t wounded at all...his whole body felt so...strangely hot at what had just been said to him. There was no question at all...this female was to become his bride.

KDRAMA AND CDRAMA MASTER LIST OF REVIEWS
Series: go ahead Episodes: 40 Genres: family, healing/melodrama, slice of life, romance Spoilers in the Rec: for the first 20% ish/set-up If You Like, You’ll Like: reply 1988, le coup de foudre, find yourself (same production company/main male actor), rain or shine/just between lovers, found family stories, meet again stories
Rank: 10/10** (see Drawbacks section)
PREMISE
widower hai chao and his 6 year old daughter jian jian live happily above his noodle restaurant despite the recent, tragic death of his wife. one day, dysfunction junction a married couple (he ping, a police officer, and chen ting, a real piece of work) move into the same building with their 7 year old son, ling xiao. immediately, jian jian attaches herself to ling xiao, who is unexpectedly grim for a small child.
because ling xiao’s family is less-than-healthily grieving the loss of their youngest child, ling xiao’s sister who died in a terrible accident. The Apartment of Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms eventually implodes, ending with chen ting abandoning her husband and son. he ping, suddenly a single father, and hai chao come to a friendly partnership that is clearly alluding to gay marriage where they co-raise both of their kids--hai chao as the primary caregiver, and he ping supporting them financially through his job as a policeman.
meanwhile, the neighborhood busybody is dead-set on getting hia chao remarried. eventually she introduces him to a divorced single mother, he mei, and her son zi qiu, who is ling xiao’s age. they sort of start to date, but it culminates in he mei skipping town and leaving zi qiu behind. hai chao, man with a heart of gold, informally adopts him and zi qiu becomes jianjian’s foster brother.
from there, the trio grow up happily and become inseparable. but once zi qiu and ling xiao graduate high school, the bullshit parade their respective childhood skeletons reappear in their lives. circumstances lead to the boys moving overseas, leaving jianjian and their fathers behind.
they reunite after 9 years, when the boys return to a home where they hope to pick things back up from where they left off. things are more complicated than that, as jianjian finds herself in a new life and surrounded by new people.
MAIN CHARACTERS
li jian jian
hai chao’s daughter and the only girl in the family. she attended the required short-hair-low-grades training program required of all cdrama youth female leads. super positive and outgoing, as well as the youngest of the three pseudo-siblings, jian jian grows up spoiled and over protected by her father and brothers, and as a result is completely devastated once her family falls apart. it’s so sad.
after the time skip, she’s an on-the-verge successful artist who makes woodcarvings, and exudes big art bro energy. inhales sugar like it’s nobody’s business. she inherited her father’s disease called caring too much, and it’s incurable!!
ling xiao
the eldest brother and resident fun police. ling xiao comes from a seriously toxic home that finally seems to improve once his mother leaves. but then she comes back. fucking great. introverted to the point of being withdrawn to anyone but his chosen family, ling xiao’s had to carry a lot of emotional weight that takes a larger and larger toll on him as the series progresses. please get this boy some therapy.
becomes a dentist because jian jian needs one. wears a lot of monochromatic outfits with low necklines because heavy angst but make it fashion. has been in love with jian jian since high school and is still carrying that torch 9 years later.
he zi qiu
the middle child who grows up in hai chao and jian jian’s home, and is her foster brother in all but paperwork. hotheaded, zi qiu and jian jian basically share two brain cells that ling xiao routinely takes from them for safekeeping. he spoils jian jian, sneaking her snacks and junk food and wants to become a pastry chef so he can open a sweet shop for her!!
my favorite character. just wants to be wanted 8( him and hai chao’s relationship is my favorite dynamic in the series. will sob while driving a pink moped. is too proud to beg
li hai chao (left) and ling he ping (right)
the greatest (hai chao) and okayest (he ping) dads in the world! noodle dad/hai chao has never done anything wrong in his life, ever, and we know this and we love him. he ping isn’t a bad person, but demonstrates pretty classic absentee parenting/isn’t as emotionally present in his son’s life as hai chao. hai chao is the heart of the family, and would do anything for his kids 8(
SOME SUPPORT CHARACTERS
tang can (left) and qiu ming yue (right)
jian jian’s #GirlGang and roommates. they, like literally everyone in this drama, have some severe mom issue hang-ups. tang can (left) is a former child actress who is struggling with her lack of success as an adult and gives well-meaning but absolutely terrible advice on the regular.
ming yue (right) is jian jian’s best friend since childhood and as an adult is trying to break free from her mother’s controlling nature--she’s also had a thing for ling xiao for the last 9 years. raises fish for symbolism purposes.
chen ting
ling xiao’s mom and certified garbage human. unable to cope with the death of her daughter that was her fault lbr, she abandons her family and disappears for ten years. she forces her way back into ling xiao’s life when he turns 18, where it’s revealed that she’s remarried and ling xiao has a younger half-sister chengzi (”little orange”). shit goes down, and soon ling xiao is forced to move back to singapore to serve as primary caregiver to both his mother who abandoned him and the half sister he barely knows.
emotionally abusive and basically hits every single square on the toxic parent bingo card. i just. i just hate her. even typing this out is making me mad.
he mei
zi qiu’s mother. after a few dates with hai chao, she ends up ditching her kid and disappearing for unknown reasons. is a slightly better parent than chen ting but that’s like saying some poison kills you slower. the show tries to bring us around on her but it didnt work for me.
SOME OTHERS
zhuang bei, zi qiu’s best friend growing up who i would like a lot less if he wasn’t played by the same actor who played my beloved dachuan
zheng shuran, jian jian’s first boyfriend and fellow artist who’s got a weird thing for women’s waists and pretentious artists’ statements
du juan, jian jian’s friend who co-owns their woodworking studio. has absolute trash taste in men
chengzi, ling xiao’s half-sister who can be a brat but dear god does she need to be protected/saved
**DRAWBACKS
so this is a weird one for me. what i didn’t like i really didn’t like, but what i loved i really loved. ultimately, the factors/uniqueness of this show and the loveability of the main characters outweighed the negatives and it’s one of my favorite dramas.
THAT SAID. i got some #thoughts on this one.
first, there are literally no positive mother figures in this show. not a damn one. they are all negligent or controlling at best or down right abusive at worst. no woman over 30 is portrayed positively and that’s a big No from me.
the last 10 eps have some pacing issues and focus on the wrong people. spending the remaining episodes focused on one of the most universally hated characters vs. the main family was a bad move
the show tried to redeem or make us sympathize with characters that were, to me, completely irredeemable. one case is worse than the other, but both of them were terrible people that deserved to be cut out of the main family’s lives.
REASONS TO WATCH
the main family. the characters are so wonderful and nuanced, and their dynamics with one another were amazing. you’ll fall in love with hai chao aka noodle dad and the trio. they go through so many trials but they still stick together and it’s ultimately a healing drama and i loved it very much.
the central romance was less in focus, but the pining is enough to make jane austen emerge from the grave. i loved the leads together, and while LOL ling xiao’s attachment to jian jian was not always healthy, they supported each other and it made me smile. i love me a tortured pining dude.
#Acting. everyone played their parts to perfection. the child actors in particular were so well-cast (esp baby zi qiu)
the soundtrack lmao. you watch the opening credits and know you’ll need to buckle up
idk it’s a very unique show, and i haven’t seen one like it. reply 1988 comes close, but it doesn’t tackle the same issues and it was all just very real and earnest.
Final Thoughts.
GOODNIGHT, GOOODBYYYYYE MY CHILDREEEEEEEN

So, at the end of brainstorm.
In previous Post I mentioned my shitty fic, so... Since some people liked it (???????????????????) I want to make it better. Worth to be liked not just because of certain gen-kinks, but because of... Well, something. Maybe even I'll manage to get beta, lol.
Well... Here goes nothing. Svsss but told like "Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei".
I really liked "SZS", it was one of my first comedy anime that I really liked, even though by the end of second season I stopped understanding it completely. I still don't get it fully, because I live in a very different culture, BUT.
But smart people before me already figured out what exactly make "SZS" a good show. And I have my own opinions on it, so I'll just try to break down what really make SZS what it is:
1. Depiction of actual problems, which author of original manga and stuff that worked on anime were familiar with. But depiction isn't everything, just depiction is lampshading and this is kinda stupid way to deal with your pain. Since it shows that you don't get it. At all. You know about existence of problem but have no intention to deal with it, because it doesn't affect you. So, then we have next place:
2. Over the top caricatures with understandable reactions and emotions. Just... Over the top. Actual people can be upset about decline of person who they like, but most of them won't use the knife to kill that person. Something like that.
2.1. Exploration of stereotypes. What can make a young girl thinking so much about only positive things? Looks like coping mechanism, especially if you watched at least beginning of first episode.
3. Weird ideas that you think of in 3 a.m. In that case they are fully explored. How do you know that everybody around you are actually those who they are claim they are? It doesn't make much sense, but... We're talking about mess of a people here. People who make...
4. Terrible decisions that naturally comes from their world view. People who harm each other, who don't really care about each other. People who prefer choosing easy way for themselves.
And so I should imply all of this in my fic. Which in current state is terrible. And find beta coz I may easily fuck up in lots of places.
FORTUNATELY svsss is also about... Not very good people if you will think about it.
Shen Jiu? OK, we all know that he is a terrible person who shouldn't be in charge of kids. Adults are fine though.
Shen Yuan? Did you forget that at the beginning he easily made Ming Fang (a child) explore a fucking corpse? And during demon invasion: oh, good, protag-kun will be fine... How about other children?
Yue Qingyuan? Did you miss that part where he was totaly fine with his shidi abusing a kid?
Etc, etc.
Basically I can roast almost anyone in this canon (except for Gunyi Xiao and maybe QQQ, hell if I will ever write her name correctly), so the 4th... Punkt? Is totaly valid.
3 is not a problem for now, there is no point to make a picture with lack of actual characters.
2 is very closely connected to 1, and there is the heart of a problem: I can't depict problems that are valid for China. Because I live in a very different culture with very different cultural, historical and political background. So... I guess my knowledge of Russian problems from the first and second hands are going to shine. It would be a mess, isn't it?
Aaand a couple of words about comedy:
In SZS comedy is heavily based on social issues, as well as deconstructing anime tropes. Plus politics and history. The last two are obviously are not a choice, so it's going to be another very big pain in my ass.
And tomorrow according to my plan it will be time to break up characters.
Teg is "boring adventures".
And I'm going to sleep.

"Ming Yue, without you, who will accompany me through bitterness and joy? Without you, who will have a drink of wine with me? Without you, who will enjoy the moon and the music with me? I’m lost whether I’m awake or drunk. How can someone like me grow old alone?" — Li Qian

I’ve been meaning to start The Long Ballad because Zhao Lu Si (TROTAR) is in it and I thought the main male lead looks cute. Finally started it yesterday because Alen Fang (The Love By Hypnotic/Ming Yue Shines on My Heart) is also in it and I wanted to see more of him. However, even though he’s listed as main character on mydramalist, he’s the 3rd male character and it looks like his story and prospect are dim and unfortunate. ☹️
Why does Alen Fang go from main lead in The Love By Hypnotic/Ming Yue Shines on My Heart to poor, unfortunate second lead in his more recent aired dramas!

How invested in Qian & Ming Yue’s relationship Qian’s sister & friends and the whole manor are is hilariously adorable! Taking bets, ribbing Qian, and just whole heartedly supporting and rooting for the two of them to be together.

Kind of want to tag The Love By Hypnotic as Ming Yue Shines on My Heart instead because it’s both punny/cute and closer to its Vietnamese, and therefore, Chinese titles. But there’s going to be nothing in that tag and I’ll have to double tag 😩
