theo's guide: how to flunk exams and NOT kill yourself :)
good day! screwed up an exam you say? me too. proof under the cut. coping with it badly? yeah. me too. but we dont want to do that! we want to get up and do better next time! sounds corny as hell, i know. it's hard, i know. but you and i both know no matter how hard we fuck up something, the next exam will come (unless this is your last exam ever ever, in which case good on you!). and nobody wants to feel bad anyway. so here's my extremely-non-exhaustive guide on how to feel not as sucky! reminder that this won't work for everyone!!
breathe in, breathe out. centre yourself.
if you have the peace of mind to do so, take notes while/after the teachers go through the paper on what you should revise. that's pretty important, but you should only do it when you can.
do something that REALLY does not involve that subject. go hang out with your friends for an hour or something. go play whatever game you've been saying you'll play. just take a break from studying for a minute. it'll do ya good.
take a nap! i'd suggest you do so at least. like a good one. if its later in the day, just sleep. as someone who doesnt sleep a lot, it might feel bad, but it won't after a while.
tell someone! it's like every other trouble in your life, venting kind of helps.
remember that this is not the end of the world. it feels like it is, but everything has multiple routes. is this a life-changing exam? mine was too. was this the only route you thought you could take in your life? mine was too. let me tell you, it isnt. will people talk you down? if they do, i'm telling you that it's okay. it will be. you did well. i don't care what score you got as long as you did your best. you are enough, and wherever you go from here, up or down, it is enough. more than that even. you are enough.
breathe in, breathe out. you'll be okay.
sub-tips:
play music that feels good! stuff that bangs. i like rock a lot.
eat something you want! im an absolute dessert sucker.
comfortable environment! overstimulation is horrendous!
call a friend maybe! up to you.
cut for my grades:
grade collection:
math: 92/100 = 92% = A+ = 4.0
history: 22/40 = 55% = C+ = 2.5
chinese: 59.5/130 = ~45% = D+ = 1.5
malay: 56.5/100 = 56.5% = C+ = 2.5
geography: 17/40 = 42.5% = D = 1.0
english: 88/120 = 73.3% = A = 4.0
science: 77/90 = 85.5% = A+ = 4.0
literature: 31/50 = 62% = B = 3.0
see im telling you i didnt do well. it's okay.

hi miss mao. i read the aventurine fic and ouagdjckkekcjcns. oh your brain…………. physically im sitting on my chair, mentally im face down in a pool because i feel like ive just had my doors kicked down and gotten grabbed by the throat for one of the greatest psychological reads of my life ??? /pos
aven’s relationship with avgin………… oh he just like me fr. i too cannot lie in my mother tongue (strange to call it that honestly, because i’m terrible at speaking it, but it’s the language my people speak and the ones who came before so it’s mine, my mother tongue, my mother’s tongue, mine) because for life reasons i was raised an english speaker, made to speak it because it’s the best way to ‘succeed’ and other fun post-colonial things. english is casual and everyday to me so the part where aven thinks about how he can’t say “i love you” in avgin because it feels too raw and too real and too honest is so,,,,,,, LAHSHDHDKSJDJD MISS MAO IM GOIGN INSANE /pos
and that dream sequence……….. is it crazy to say that ive dreamt the same? and that part about kakavasha actually listening and changing because he never had to become aventurine in this beautiful dream and he can be genuine and truthful OHHHHH MISS MAO you are making me, woman lover 9000, soggy about a man /pos
arghhh this is such a disjointed ask sorry but i just needed to spill my guts about it a little alsjcjkdsod as an apology i will leave u w a little linguistic gift; in malay, the phrase ‘i love you’ is said (formally) as ‘saya cintakan awak’. ‘cinta’ is perhaps our stronger word for ‘love’, but what i feel is the best part about ‘cintakan’ or the suffix ‘kan’ is that it denotes a current action. therefore, while ‘saya cintakan awak’ can be translated as ‘i love you’, it also can mean, in full, ‘i love you and i actively choose to love you’ :))
SEV.... I'm grabbing you by the shoulders im shaking you u don't know how much this feedback means to me 😭 when I wrote this I was so curious about how you'd find the fic because of our prev interactions where you'd mentioned being one gen away from colonialism, and how you'd be interested in a fic about cultural loss. I really didn't want to disappoint you and it makes me so happy that the fic resonated with you !!!!! thank you so much for sharing your experiences w me, I loved hearing about how you related to the fic.
I also will say. I find it very funny that you relate to the dream sequence because I based it on my experiences!!! the more I forgot my language the less I dreamed in it, and now I almost never do. but on the rare occasions where I do, I'm always in the context where the language was dominant in my life - as a child, with my family. I had always wondered if this was just a me thing or not LOL so it is very interesting that you relate !!! maybe it is a thing with all bilingual speakers. (ALSO I'm sorry for making you care about a man 💔)
OYUYGGGHDMSHS THAT FACT ABOUT MALAY 😭😭😭 I love hearing about the ways that "I love you" translate to other languages. it hits so different depending on which one you're functioning in. it occurs to me that if you contextualize the fic that way wherein the Avgin version is so specific and intentional, like Malay, it's no wonder that aventurine can't bring himself to say it....... o-(--<

Mind of Mine is the debut studio album by English singer and songwriter Zayn. It was released on March 25, 2016 through RCA Records, and was released one year after his departure from One Direction. Primarily an R&B and alternative R&B record, the album blends elements from various genres, including pop, folk, dub, soul, funk, electronic, Qawwali, hip hop, reggae, classical and soft rock. Upon release, it was met with generally positive reviews, with praise for Malik's new musical direction and his vocal performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The album was influenced by the music that Malik grew up with, primarily his father's urban music records, including R&B artists R. Kelly, Usher, Donell Jones, and Prince, rappers Tupac and Biggie, and reggae artists Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman, as well as Bollywood music.
He cited rapper Tupac's All Eyez on Me as the album that had the biggest impact on him, stating that it is "so real, and from a perspective of a place where somebody is not afraid to be completely 100 percent honest." He said, "as I grew up, it really helped me to understand that it’s OK to be honest with your art, because people appreciate that."
In an interview with NME, Malik explained the album's title: "It's really reflective of the whole experience that I want to give the listener. I wanted it to be almost like a brainstorm. It’s just music and it’s just whatever you’re feeling at that moment in time."
Talking about the recording sessions with Billboard, Malik's main collaborator for the album James "Malay" Ho said they have gone to unusual lengths in pursuit of inspiration, for one "we went camping for a week in the Angeles Forest – set up a generator and a tent so we could track in the woods." James Ho is a Grammy Award winning producer, whose past work includes Frank Ocean's Channel Orange and Big Boi's Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. "I'll come down here [the recording room] and record maybe seven songs a night," Malik told the magazine. "I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I’m not censoring myself anymore."
Ho described Malik as "pure genius" and noted that most of the vocals were recorded in just a few takes.

Swinging by Singapore (Week 4)
Hello from Singapore! Having always wanted to travel to Southeast Asia, I was ecstatic to learn that one of my roommates had a similar dream. I couldn’t believe it when we started discussing the trip just two weeks in advance, but I seized the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture. My schooling at UNSW is split between the Summer semester which runs from Jan 2 - Feb 5 and term 1 which runs from Feb 11 - May 9. During the summer semester, I have been taking a single Ecotourism class which is entirely asynchronous until the end of January when the class takes a trip to the Great Barrier Reef! This meant that I could travel with no fear of missing class. After a 9hr flight, Lauren, Charlotte, Shaunak, Evan and I landed in Singapore and got right to exploring. The Jewel is a mall containing the world’s largest indoor waterfall located just outside the Changi Airport. As soon as we got off the plane and laid eyes on the beauty we were speechless. Luscious trees and shrubbery surrounded the waterfall and staggered up all around it. The light shone through the windowed ceiling and made me forget about any stress I ever had. We might as well have been standing in a jungle. The surrounding mall was just as exciting. Several minutes were spent wandering around the Pokemon store where I got a pack of cards in honor of my ever growing childhood collection. The chocolate croll I got at a little bakery stand was one of the best things I had ever eaten in an airport. After 2 hours of exploring, it was clear to me that airports in the US need to step up their game.
Tumblr media
Utilizing the very reliable train system known as the MRT, we made our way to our AirBnB located in Little India. For reference, Singapore is a melting pot of cultures with a 74% Chinese, 14% Malaysian, and 9% Indian population. This means that when you look around, all signage is in Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, and English. The fact that English is widely spoken across the country made transport and communication extremely easy and not something we had to worry about. After settling into our single room with just enough space for our beds and bags, we made our way towards Kampong Gelam which is Singapore’s Muslim Quarter and the site of the remarkable Sultan Mosque. Starving, we found a restaurant for dinner which was full of new foods and a particular favorite of mine – Kothu Paratha which I’d only ever had at my favorite Indian restaurant in Ann Arbor. We called it a night soon after that, but I was excited to be on a new continent and get right to exploring.
Tumblr media
The next day we hit all the major stops including Gardens by the Bay, the Cloud Forest, and Marino Bay Sands. The first two attractions, like the Jewel, emphasized the appreciation for nature that Singapore has as many of its major attractions are centered around greenery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured first is Gardens by the Bay. Second is me in the Cloud Forest!
Nearby was a Hawker Center called Satay by the Bay where we got lunch. Hawker Centers in Singapore are essentially large food courts with countless stalls of diverse Indian, Chinese, and Malaysian foods and drinks for incredible prices. On average, you could get a whole meal for about $5 and a side drink for another $1 so needless to say I seized the opportunity to try as many foods as possible. That lunch I had chicken satay, my first ever stingray, carrot cake (a dish local to Singapore containing absolutely no carrot nor cake), and pineapple juice. I can’t even begin to describe how delicious everything tasted so I’m afraid you’ll just have to imagine through the picture below.
Tumblr media
Hawker Centers like that one are scattered all throughout the city, so we made it a rule to seek them out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At Marino Bay Sands, one of the most unique buildings I have ever stepped foot in, we made our way to a restaurant called Lavo at the highest floor where we got drinks, incredible views, and a 20-layered chocolate peanut butter cake. We may have been exhausted from walking around all day, but we did not leave until that cake plate was clean, even if it meant spending the next hour there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marino Bay Sands is the building pictured above followed by the equally-as-intimidating chocolate cake.
The next day we ventured to Sentosa Island where you could take cable cars across the island and see the beautiful beaches and various amusement parks. Though the weather wasn’t in our favor, it was nice to see what beaches look like outside of Australia since they reminded me of just how lucky I am to be living on Coogee. Sentosa was followed by Chinatown and Clarke Quay in the evening, both of which are full of rich culture and were a pleasure to roam in. Before our flight to Bali, we concluded our trip with the MacRitchie Treetop Walk where we were greeted by monkeys and even more beautiful greenery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though we were only able to spend a few days there, I fully intend on returning to Singapore one day and making my way to those Hawker Centers. Until then, back to exploring Australia!

Even at his lowest, Theodore's aim is to survive no matter the odds. Upon landing in Hogwarts, he finds it hard to keep still in one location and still gets into trouble exploring the castle grounds or the nearby hamlets. He aims to use magic for good, though he is still questioning where he draws the line. Zayn Malik Girlfriend
  Geneva Lane (2010)
Tumblr media
After meeting Zayn Malik while they were both on The X Factor, Geneva Lane and Malik had a brief romantic relationship in 2010. It's unclear how long they dated, but it doesn't appear like they ended things well. Malik's abrupt and widely reported breakup with Perrie Edwards, whom he dated from 2011 to 2015, was met with immediate support from Lane for the Little Mix singer. She shared her thoughts on social media, saying that she had expected the relationship to end. There had to be some unresolved matter involving Malik and Lane.   Rebecca Ferguson (2011)
Tumblr media
Malik and British singer Rebecca Ferguson first connected on The X Factor, and their relationship grew more passionate and flirtatious when the show toured in 2011. Unfortunately, their relationship didn't last long either, as they called it quits on each other after just four months. Ferguson referred to their time together as her "first mistake" in a 2013 interview with The Independent. "I was 23 and he was 18," she said, expressing regret over the age difference. It wouldn't have created a stir if the roles had been reversed, with a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman. But it was significant in our situation. Ferguson acknowledged her ignorance at the time. "You can't always let your heart lead the way," she said in closing.   Stephanie Davis (2011)
Tumblr media
That same year, Malik moved on to the English actress Stephanie Davis following his breakup with Ferguson. But like his other two high-profile relationships, this one ended after just five months. In 2016, Davis revealed that she was the one who started the breakup during her appearance on Celebrity Big Brother. She also talked briefly about their brief romance. She related an instance in which Malik called her repeatedly while she was out with her friends. She made the decision to update her phone number in response. It makes sense because Davis ended things later. Perrie Edwards (2011-2015)
Tumblr media
Zayn Malik learned from his run of brief relationships and entered his first committed partnership with Little Mix singer and fellow X Factor alum Perrie Edwards. Edwards was a contestant on the show, and Malik's boy band One Direction made a special appearance. This is how the two first connected.  In August 2013, rumors of the British singer popping the question to Edwards began to circulate, following two years of low-key affairs. August 2015 saw the pop culture couple break up after a two-year engagement. Using the energy she had gained from their breakup, Edwards released the song "Shout Out to My Ex" about Malik in 2016. Gigi Hadid (2015-2021)
Tumblr media
Following the end of a serious four-year relationship with Edwards, Malik turned to fashion designer Gigi Hadid for comfort. After sparking dating rumors in late 2015, Malik shared an Instagram picture of the two cuddling, and by December, they had officially announced their relationship to the world. After that, Hadid appeared in Malik's first solo music video, the two even shared a kiss. The two made their rather fashionable red carpet debut as a couple at the Met Gala in 2016 after being spotted hanging out in public on multiple occasions. In May 2018, after two years of blissful marriage, there were rumors circulating that Malik and Hadid were taking a break. Selena Gomez (2023)
Tumblr media
Selena Gomez was the last high-profile person to have dated Zayn Malik. Rumors of a romantic relationship between Sel and Malik started to surface in March 2023 after the two were spotted out to dinner in New York City. Witnesses reported seeing them kissing and holding hands. This dinner date happened soon after Gomez became one of just eighteen accounts that Malik followed on Instagram, after fans on Twitter noticed that he had followed the "Better" singer.

What is the genre for Dead Don't Tell Tale?
-The genre of it is thrill, mystery, detective and supernatural.
Is there any inspiration for this story?
-The characters are all inspired by the fairytale that I have once read or heard of it. Example; The Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, etc.
Did you get inspiration from Disney?
-No, I don't. It's from the Grimms Brothers' book that inspired me, but there are some that are from Disney but I'll try not to make it too obvious.
When will it come out?
-When I am finally done with the plot and the twist of the story.
What did they look like?
-I have done what they're appearance looks like, I will post it later.
Are there any other inspiration you get for making Dead Don't Tell Tale?
-I do.
Games; Danganronpa, Genshin Impact, Reverse 1999, Ace Attorney
Anime/Manga: Bungou Stray Dogs, Jujutsu Kaisen, Boku No Hero Academia, Vanitas No Carte, Yuukoku No Moriarty
Is it alright for me to ship, headcanon and theorise of the characters?
-It is alright to ship the characters of my story and also headcanon them. As long as it is a legal ship and also none of the characters of mine are out of character. And it is alright to make a theory of them, let alone analyse them with all you want! I would love to read it.
What makes you want to write your book?
-I want to try to write a story of thrills and mysteries, combined with the supernatural. I am a fan of thrills and love to make one. Dead Don't Tell Tale is just a practice story I am making. I want to try and twist the characters of how my liking.
[About the author]
What should we call you?
-In different platforms, I always put May, Mayz, or Artzy. But I would prefer to call myself Sokai Asuki, just Asuki is fine. It is alright, Sokai Asuki is my pen name. It's not my real name, only a few IRL people call me May.
What age are you?
-I am in my Secondary School, that is all you need to know.
What language do you speak?
-I speak Malay and English.
Where are you from?
-Malaysia.
Why are you making a story using the English language?
-I am more comfortable using the English language when writing, but if speaking, mostly Malay.

Visited by Malay navigators since ancient times, it was included on the maps of English and Dutch navigators in the early 17th century. The current name was given by William Mynors of the East India Ship Company, who landed there on Christmas Day 1643. Christmas Island was uninhabited until 1890, when a population consisting of Chinese and Malays was brought in to exploit the phosphate mines. The island, which depended on the British colony of Singapore, was transferred to Australia on 1 October 1958. From 1981 onwards, residents were deemed eligible to acquire Australian citizenship. In 1984, the government of Australia extended social security, health and education benefits to the island and granted political rights to new citizens. Income tax was introduced from 1985. The focus of local life was the Phosphate Mining Commission, where practically the entire population worked. In 1987, the authorities closed the mine, which was reopened in 1990 by private operators, but under strict conditions of preservation of the environment. In 1991, investments were made to develop the island's tourist potential. https://www.instagram.com/p/CplILcYD2xl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Period Dramas, we love them, they test your Knowledge on History and the Romances and Experience brought to life in front of your eyes, they MAY not be real people but it is the Fusion of those before you.
Today I'll be showing part 1 of Period Dramas you should watch, Minor Spoilers ahead tho
-Outlander
Tumblr media
Outlander is a very unique Drama, it portrays the Characters from their era where they lived, Claire, the Main Character, is from the 1940s suffering PTSD from WW2 as she firsthand experienced it from being a Combat Nurse. The Fact that she is already scarred tells you about the Age rating of this show.
In some Event, I'm not gonna spoil it, she is Transported back in time to the 1743, in Scotland, where she faces dangers she only read from History Books and Records, none of the Characters are exactly Progressive in the Time Period they lived and that's unique part of it, it doesn't force Progressive themes onto the Characters and actually depict what people like back then.
You can legitimately compare the people from the 1700s to the 1940s to the 1960s.
-Last Madame
Tumblr media
Hailing from my Country, Last Madame is a Netflix Series about a Girl who discovers the lives of Women from 1930s Singapore, the setting takes place in a Brothel, as in those times Women who wanted to find a Job and not be forced into marriage could only go to these places, it's a form of Freedom, that most people don't understand these days.
If you're looking for ✨ S t e a m y ✨ Romance, Rivalry and a Looming Threat of a World War 2, here's a Show to Watch.
-Scarlet Heart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is the Chinese and the Korean version, each taking place in a different Era, the Chinese one takes place in the Qing Dynasty (1636 to 1912) and the Korean one takes place in the Goryeo Period(918 to 1392), I can say that both installments are Tragic as hell, heartbreaking, Unrequited love stuff if you don't count Chinese version's Modern Day Sequel and Literal Death of Characters.
The Main Character Time Traveled to this Era, so do you want to be Destroyed in and out? This is the right one for you, however Personally I think the two Series happened in the Same Universe for some Reason.
-This Land is Mine
Tumblr media
Another Drama that also comes from my Country, it talks about Singapore in the 1950s, still suffering from the effects of WW2, it is apart of History that many Elderly Singaporeans still remember and it horrifies them, It talks about being Racial divide, the idea of Independence, Riots that happened that honestly told Countless stories that many still remember.
It's Available on YouTube and get ready for a Heartwarming Cliffhanger as you realize that the Character's stories are not supposed to be complete because the generation that lived in that time is still existing, it's a Good show.

“That year, using English as an example, they began the task of studying how languages grew, changed, morphed, multiplied, diverged, and converged. They studied sound changes; why the English knee had a silent k that was pronounced in the German counterpart; why the stop consonants of Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit had such a regular correspondence with consonants in Germanic languages. They read Bopp, Grimm, and Rask in translation; they read the Etymologiae of Isidorus. They studied semantic shifts, syntactical change, dialectical divergence, and borrowing, as well as the reconstructive methods one might use to piece together the relationships between languages that at first glance seemed to have nothing to do with each other. They dug through languages like they were mines, searching for valuable veins of common heritage and distorted meaning.
It changed the way they spoke. Constantly they trailed off in the middle of sentences. They could not utter even common phrases and aphorisms without pausing to wonder where those words came from. Such interrogations infiltrated all their conversations, became the default way they made sense of each other and everything else. They could no longer look at the world and not see stories, histories, layered everywhere like centuries’ worth of sediment.
And the influences on English were so much deeper and more diverse than they thought. Chit came from the Marathi chitti, meaning ‘letter’ or ‘note’. Coffee had made its way into English by way of Dutch (koffie), Turkish (kahveh), and originally Arabic (qahwah). Tabby cats were named after a striped silk that was in turn named for its place of origin: a quarter of Baghdad named al-‘Attābiyya. Even basic words for clothes all came from somewhere. Damask came from cloth made in Damascus; gingham came from the Malay word genggang, meaning ‘striped’; calico referred to Calicut in Kerala, and taffeta, Ramy told them, had its roots in the Persian word tafte, meaning ‘a shiny cloth’. But not all English words had their roots in such far-flung or noble origins. The curious thing about etymology, they soon learned, was that anything could influence a language, from the consumption habits of the rich and worldly to the so-called vulgar utterances of the poor and wretched. The lowly cants, the supposed secret languages of thieves, vagabonds, and foreigners, had contributed such common words such as bilk, booty, and bauble.
English did not just borrow words from other languages; it was stuffed to the brim with foreign influences, a Frankenstein vernacular. And Robin found it incredible, how this country, whose citizens prided themselves so much on being better than the rest of the world, could not make it through an afternoon tea without borrowed goods.”

favorite piece of disability history is Hand Talk. as i understand it, the history of sign language in settler society is one in which "home sign" - the private sign language of families with Deaf members - gave way to local signed argot as a constantly-developing spectrum of contact languages between different home signs, which gave way to the two major sign language families, French Sign Language and British Sign Language, in the late 18th century, when formal education for the deaf brought together people from so many areas that the formation of a contact pidgin was daunting.
(as a sidebar, this has the interesting side effect that despite both being glossed into and taking core elements of grammar and vocabulary from English, ASL and BSL are genetically unrelated, with radically different signing spaces, grammar, and approaches to novel words and phrases. both look not just like gibberish to native speakers of the other, but only barely recognizable as sign language at all.)
there's a wrinkle in that story, though. one of the first adopters of French Sign Language outside of France was a school for the deaf in America located in Massachusetts, which relied on the existing substrate of contact pidgins between home signs in New England.
which included a tremendous substrate of indigenous sign language. native North America has one of those problems that can turn into opportunities in human history; it is blessed and cursed with hundreds, possibly once thousands, of languages. there are on the order of a dozen major language families indigenous to the borders of the united states. not languages, families. the eastern seaboard of the united states, an area approximately the size of western europe, contains five big enough to show up on a map, with some modern US states there containing as many as three. for context, you can go from Portuguese to Hindi without leaving indo-european, from Malay to Hawaiian without leaving austronesian. the only large areas with a similar density of language families i know of are Papua New Guinea and India (and, of course, South America). in some limited areas this lead to spoken linguas franca. think Chinuk Wawa, the contact pidgin of the Pacific Northwest. these languages would be simple, easy to learn by outsiders to the language family, and with a dramatically reduced vocabulary, grammar, and sound inventory compared to their nearest relatives.
but this was not tremendously common east of the Rockies, because a signed lingua franca already existed. known as Hand Talk, it was understood by a wide cross-section of society - depending on the area, familiarity ranged from "specialists sign and understand Hand Talk for purposes of communication on long journeys" and "nearly everyone knows basic vocabulary in Hand Talk". it can be divided into a number of dialect areas, but all of them are at least slightly mutually intelligible and rely on similar signing spaces and approaches to signing words.
many more words are shared by Hand Talk and ASL than can be explained by coincidence, and to someone familiar with ASL elements of Hand Talk are surprisingly familiar, likely because ASL developed alongside an already quite mature and functional sign language and freely borrowed what its creators could comprehend. and during the 19th century "kill the Indian, save the man" era, schools to which ndn children were sent by the state would punish both Deaf and hearing students for using Hand Talk in the same ways they would punish them for using their own spoken or written languages. i am loath to use "cultural appropriation" in the usual sense generally, but it's hard to say anything else when settlers strip-mine a language for parts then try to exterminate it.
despite these efforts to extinguish it, Hand Talk still exists, having been signed continuously by Deaf and hearing speakers since time immemorial, and can be learned today. it is undergoing something of a revival at the moment. look it up! it's cool stuff. it strikes me as especially neat that, where European society tended to treat the Deaf as second-class citizens at the best of times and even now literacy in sign language is not commonplace, at one point indigenous societies across North America relied on sign language to communicate across vast distances and esteemed Deaf signers as the most fluent communicators by hand
