Robert Sugden is happy. He's had a great year work wise, he enjoys being single and just started a long Christmas holiday; life is good.

Then he hears disturbing news regarding his family and it's threatening to ruin everything.

In his upset state of mind, Robert does a stupid thing and as a result, ends up in a pretend relationship.

And it's not just the fake dating - there's a huge and weird family to deal with, in addition to his own.

But it's for a reason and it's just for a little while.

They'll get out of it soon enough which is exactly what they want.

Of course it is.

A fake dating Christmas AU with a bit of angst, a lot of drama and a truckload of fluff.

Do you think Betsy would’ve come around so soon had she not indirectly caused Carla’s head wound? I’ve been re-watching those scenes and it feels like she was OK with it more due to guilt than actual enthusiasm like by Christmas she comes around but before that idk. I keep wondering when she would’ve come around if all that hadn’t happened because the switch up from drink throwing is fast lol. I also want to see her and Carla actually talk about who they are to each other like the money is a nice gesture, but I want some wearable communication you know. I know it’s unlikely given the nature of soaps, but a girl can dream lol

This is such a great question, and I've mulled it over for like... a month. So sorry, anon.

Truthfully, I think Betsy is a lot like a younger Carla. They both have a tendency to lash out in anger as a first response, before they've thought anything through. Carla has mellowed in this way as she's gotten older, but Betsy is absolutely still navigating it.

From how I view it, Betsy started to forgive Carla that night they sat on the bench together and Carla talked to her about Lisa's happiness. She was still being a stroppy teenager, of course, but something broke through there because Carla is always honest and straightforward with Betsy - something Betsy craves from the adults around her. She was still angry with Lisa and Carla, though, of course.

However, Betsy was already in too deep. She'd already made a plan. She'd already decided she was doing this thing to harm the factory and, by extension, Carla. She'd already determined that this was the best course of action to protect Mason. She didn't know how to back out and change things.

So, she did what she could to ensure that Carla wasn't directly impacted: making sure everyone was truly gone, telling Logan and Matty to be quick in case she came back, losing it on them when Carla did get hurt. In the whole scenario, she was just a kid in way over her head with no idea how to get out.

You have to remember... Betsy has navigated all of her teen years without Becky and with Lisa's in-grief parenting style. She's conditioned herself to believe that no one is actually in her corner (except her friends), that she has to do everything herself, that she can't trust that fucking up won't get her into trouble. How does she deal with that? By fucking up anyways to earn the trouble.

Underneath, I think Betsy is genuinely a good kid. She's scared, though, and hurt, and trying to find a way to protect herself. I think she'll keep lashing out, forever, until she actually feels safe. Until she actually believes she's loved and cared for.

Seeing how she is now, with Lisa and Carla actively living together and supporting one another and her... she's softening. I hope she's starting to believe that she matters and is safe. That she'll have a place to come home to and people who love her, even when she fucks up. Even when the guilt of her actions feels like it might swallow her whole.

Be Mine Superstar - Finished up the last four episodes just to get it off my list and was pleasantly surprised how good the ending was.

Beyond Evil - Rewatching because it's amazing and fits this time of year (Happiness is also on that list).

Emmerdale - Rewatched the beginning of Aaron and Robert's storyline in 2015. Robert really was the worst back then (did Aaron ever find out about the assassin Robert hired??). Aaron was so in love so fast and sick over it. My favorite tag, "the angst it is delicious" sums them up so well.

My Journey To You - Still slowly working my way through the last episodes and am currently paused on episode 19's fantastically horrifying revelation.

Ranking Every Adaption of The Thing / coldcrashpictures video essay - With a few exceptions, I can't deal with horror (I don't like being frightened and cannot handle a lot of jump scares or gory visuals). I'm a movie fan though, and there's a lot of really interesting stuff in the genre that I like to learn about. It's even better when the writer clearly loves the work they're discussing, like this essay. It's about an hour and well worth a watch/listen.

Taikan Yoho (My Personal Weatherman) - The last episode was everything I was hoping for. Communication, some sexy times, and more communication. Yoh and Segasaki are joining the ranks of couples that I wish we could see more of as their relationship develops and matures over time. I love them.

You know what makes me furious about Emmerdale.

They waste their time with pointless characters like Chole instead of spending their time on better characters like Matty.

Matty has been on the show a lot longer than Chole and that’s not even including when he was on before when he was a kid with the whole Barton family.

Lets start first with the fact that he’s trans, there is so little repsentation of trans character on tv and there should be more. Also most of the trans characters I know are from the US, I don’t think I know any who are based in the UK.

Added on the fact that Amy and him are a couple. And yet we haven’t seen them be a couple, they’re engaged to be married if the show can be bothered to remember.

Why haven’t we seen them have small moments like having domestic moments of sharing a meal or sorting out who used the last of the milk. Or big moments where they have a date night together or talk about if they want more kids.

We haven’t even gotten into the soap gold mine of the fact that Amy is the mother of Kyle, that she shares with Cain. Who is Matty’s freaking stepfather and Amy and Cain have a touchy truce over custody of Kyle. Not even going into everything that happened with the accidental death of Al.

Circling back round to Amy and Matty getting married. Yet no mention, no discussion of what kind of wedding they want or going to have. I mean you think the show would be all over that. Think of the publicity that would bring them, in all the magazines and yet nothing. I mean no talk of the food, the music, the venue, nothing. Not even a mention of Kyle giving Amy away at the wedding.

Speaking of Kyle, why don’t they have more scenes with Kyle and Matty. Not only as stepbrothers, but the fact that Amy and Matty are dating and Matty is suppose to become Kyle’s stepdad. Yet, Kyle spends more time with Issac and if he is with Matty, it’s because Matty is ushering him off so the grownups can talk.

Matty should be on the show more, given better storylines and more screen time.

Emmerdale needs to step it up.
