Main group for my personal project, currently with the WIP name- Project Paranet

It’s a paranormal/scifi story based around a group of players and their self aware character companions getting stuck in a digital world in attempt to uncover a mystery to do with their favourite online game.

It also has themes about overcoming things like anxiety and depression and being understanding to people different from you. It’s a very personal project as one of the main characters is a fictionalised version of myself and I hope to capture some of my struggles with my mental health and trying to stay hopeful. Maybe I can even give some people some comfort that they aren’t alone with this kinda stuff, I want to make something like that to help people in a similar way to how the owl house helped me stay hopeful when I was struggling.

sure it’s not reality. It’s nothing like this ‘physical world’ of theirs. You’ve only ever met one person who bother trying out a sense of touch (her parents disapproved). You’ve never ‘touched’ anything yourself, let alone anyone. You’ve never tasted. You spend most of your time in mathematical abstractions. But honestly you don’t see why any of that would be a bad thing, even if you try to think about it.

Surely the first step after uploading your mind into a computer is to edit it???

The essence of science fiction (or speculative fiction if you're nasty) is coming up with a change and then figuring out how it would change society.

Like it's been said that anybody could write a story about the invention of a car, but good scifi predicts the traffic jam too.

So, to wit: once we figure out brain uploading, it'll definitely become a thing to run your brain on computers not at all suitible for it, just like how today there's a thing where people port Doom to toasters and car radios.

There'll be people going "I'm living in this iPod!" and "let's see if we can stuff my entire mind into this commodore 64"

As a computational functionalist, I think the mind is a system that exists in this universe and operates according to the laws of physics. Which means that, in principle, there shouldn’t be any reason why the information and dispositions that make up a mind can’t be recorded and copied into another substrate someday, such as a digital environment.
