Do you have specific spots you wanna hit while in NY? I know mentioned general areas like Ktown and getting a bagel but I didn't know if you had specific shops in mind. Where I live there is a town a few hours away and every time we go we have to stop at a specific candy shop (it's locally owned and amazing). I didn't know if you had anything like that

I'm annoyingly going for a work offsite so almost every minute of my time is accounted for, especially since I'm trying to squeeze in seeing lots of friends that are still in the city! I'll make it to a few of the below but here's an overview of my top places:

Food:

Bagels – I'm partial to Murray's on 6th Ave because I lived a few blocks away for a while but Ess-a-Bagel is good too or H&H (a classic)

Maman for pastries, Breads Bakery in Union Square for choc babka and Bourke Street Bakery near Madison Square Park for a sausage roll

The kale Brussel Caesar at Blank Slate when I'm working I'll have it delivered lol it's a guilty pleasure

Gotta have a Mister Softee in the summer

I'm a sucker for a slice of cake from Magnolia Bakery. I'm not a banana person but I know the banana pudding is everyone's fav

Alta on W. 10th is a fav date night spot, amazing tapas/vibe, it's tucked away on a residential street

Turntable Jazz Chicken. Hands down best fried Korean chicken, I will not leave New York without eating this. Get extra daikon radish and the dumplings and thank me later

Sant Ambroeus – just get a coffee/pastry to go and walk in the park!

Stores/shops:

Minamoto Kitchoan – technically food but it's really beautiful Japanese wagashi I always get some to send my dad

The Face Shop in KTown

Bloomingdales – basic but I'm not even sorry. Also it has a 40 Carrots froyo that I lowkey love to stop in and it's close to my office so I'll just pop by after work I'm on the hunt for a new YSL Manhattan bag so I want to see it in person!

Economy Candy in LES is super fun if you haven't been!

1. Good Omens Euston Station - something I blew past TWICE hurrying on my way to and from the emotional pilgrimage, this was one of those marketing moments that just worked too perfectly and was as adorable as the series itself.

Finally got around to visiting Minamoto Kitchoan in midtown, best known for high-quality wagashi sweets, or traditional Japanese sweets. I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit overwhelmed at first with the certainly extensive and amazing selection, though the front desk worker was supremely helpful with providing a few general recommendations and pointing out a few seasonal specials. 

I eventually decided on getting two sakura mochi, an eight pack of the ichigo (strawberry) mochi, a tosenka (white peach) jelly, and the spring seasonal special (which I later unwrapped and saw that it consisted of a chocolate dorayaki, two lemon cakes, and a small white peach jelly). I also think because I got so much stuff that the lady who helped me threw in a free senbei cookie which I thought was nice TT.TT” Out of everything, the tosenka jelly and the ichgio mochi were probably among my favorites, though of course I’m eager to stop by again and try some of their selections, like maybe the daifuku, down the line too.

Wagashi Taste Test Stream

I wanted to go to Minamoto Kitchoan but we didn’t get a chance. I used to go to their branch in London, so it has a lot of nostalgic value for me. Imagine my surprise when I found some for sale at the airport?! And it was something I bought before in London! Unfortunately (or fortunately) they only had the biggest box left for sale 😝😳so... Splurged on wagashi again. Once again thank you Minamoto Kitchoan for the deliciousness. 🙏

Kumquat mochi, has a whole sugared kumquat in it. Quite the burst of sweetness and a bit sour, but the intensity of the flavor is evened out by the rest of the mochi. Pretty good.

Now THIS was EXPENSIVE. Syunkyo bean jelly, a really pretty red bean jelly, kinda like the stuff you see in anime you wish you could eat. It definitely tastes of red bean and the sweetness is all-natural, so for anyone expecting jello levels of sweet this ain’t it. Good stuff, would probably be great with tea.

When I got wagashi from Minamoto Kitchoan the other day, two were about to hit their ‘best by’ dates, and the shop girl urged me to eat those right away.  So I did.  The others I got could keep for a bit, so part of my recovery day was more wagashi.

Clockwise from upper left,

- Fukuwatashi senbei (cookie) - this didn’t translate, but is essentially two zig-zag wafer cookies filled with a thin layer of vanilla creme.

- Okamau (bean jelly) - this translates as “alphabet” and was a cherry paste around smooth bean paste, with a pickled cherry blossom on there.  So mildly sweet it was surprising.

- Hanaouto (cherry jelly) - this also didn’t translate, and is the same jelly as you would make for ‘raindrop cake’ with a cherry inside.  I’m very proud my agar jelly is as mild as what theirs tasted like.
