Imagine being Shiori.
Have a baby. Lose your husband. Fall ill.
Your son stops having friends over and your illness is terminal.
Somewhere in there you started dating again.
The night your son brings a friend to the hospital for the first time, you miraculously recover.
Your son spends a lot of time with his new friends and hobbies.
You get married, he brings a friend.
He sends you on your honeymoon.
Everything seems to be going great for the first time in a long time.
Meanwhile Kurama:

YYH anime didn't mention Kurama's body becoming fully demon after getting his youki back. In the manga, he described it in more details. So that's why there are different interpretations of him (some people didn't read the manga). I don't get why the anime did this because this isn't something to censor is it?
I got two versions of manga translation to show his being inhuman or completely youkai is consistent in any versions of the manga. Why did the anime change this? It's a very important part of Kurama's characterization because he's not human, he's not Shuichi. Telling Gouki that he's merged with Shuichi is also anime only. Shuichi, the human son of Shiori, never existed outside of an alias/pseudonym. His guilt for this deception, of using her and initial plans to discard her, is what made him want to die in her place.
It shows a different dynamic between Kurama and Shiori i if everyone knows he is a demon from the beginning to the end of YYH. Like first of all, giving birth to a demon child is straight out of a horror story but Shiori's love subverted the horror of it and turned it into a familial bond between different species.
To Kurama, Shiori is simultaneously a child as well as his mother. She cannot be compared to a thousand year old ancient fox demon and she will only live within a fraction of his lifetime. But she gave him a family that felt real enough to Kurama even if Kurama wasn't being honest with her. Kurama being fully demon plays a big role to see how much impact Shiori had on the whole story. Without Shiori, Yusuke will have to kill Kurama who will be a nasty villain if he grew to hate humanity and didn't develop a conscience.
Edit because I can't shut up: By nasty villain, I mean can you imagine if Kurama's anger towards Toguro-ani was directed on all of humanity? Remember how the Toguros used to be human? Imagine if Kurama didn't have Shiori or Yusuke but met Sensui early instead. His smart old brain becoming a part of Sensui's plans. Shiori saved them all from the horrors just by taming a fox and proving humanity's worth to a demon old enough to judge human history.

Kurama is so fascinating to me. He's 1000 years old, he's one of Demon world's most famous and feared thieves, and he turned his back on that to go to high school in the human world because he wants his Mommy to think he's a Good Boy.

Shiori: Haha! Isn't it funny how serious and contemplative babies can look sometimes? Just look at Shuichi, I wonder what's going through that little head of his?

I've been thinking about this for a hot minute. I LOVE Kurama, he is my favorite character in Yu Yu hakusho. But I do feel like at some point all of the lies he tell and what not should have unfolded. Shiori deserved to know the truth about him and what he did. That would have made for an awesome side arc I think.
Because when you really look at it, what Kurama did was fucked up. I love that man to bits but it was. He invaded her body, took the place of her baby, and used her for his own personal benefit. What made it worse, was that there was a time when Kurama looked down at her and thought he inferior, which led to him treating her like dirt (he said something about it when we first meet him. It's why he feels so guilty about her sickness).
I would be so interested to see how Shiori would react to finding out her baby boy that she raised is not the person she thought he was at all, that everything about him is a lie, and she does not know who is one bit. Their entire relationship is one big fat ass lie multiple of them in fact. How mean and nasty he was as a child was not just a child acting out, but a grown ass demon man who probably thought she wasn't worth more than the scum between his toes. Granted, I know he grew to genuinely love her and became a legit mama's boy and all but still.
How does one react to all of that? To being used in such a manner? To know that she housed and nourished someone with Kurama's past? The amount of anger, hurt, betrayal and so on would be unmitigated.
And on the flipside, how would kurama react to his house of cards crashing down? He would more than likely lose the most important in his life. To him, shiori IS his mother. He would die for her without thinking about it and almost did. She is what changed him to being a much better person than he used to be by just simply giving him unconditional love. That motherly loving gaze he's so used to getting from her would turn cold and very possibly filled with hatred.
(This would make a hell of a fic. I am tempted).

Is kurama's stepfather rich?
Hard to tell. He's the president of a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) where Shiori Minamino works part-time, and Kurama joins after high school. However, Togashi has never mentioned what kind of business he runs.
For example, Togashi family has a paper store in Shinjo, Yamagata. They aren't rich, but have led a good life. On the other hand, the family of his wife Naoko Takeuchi had a jewelry store. She'd already had a Porsche before becoming well-known as the author of Sailor Moon.
Kurama lives in a nice house, attends a good private high school, gave his mom a honeymoon trip to Europe... they seem to have an income of a middle, maybe upper middle class. Mr. Hatanaka looks like a nice and simple man, I don't think he's the rich type, going out there driving a Ferrari. The couple also wanted a small and intimate wedding ceremony, and only invited close relatives.
Tumblr media
Mr. Hatanaka seems cooler in the anime version. I also like that in the manga he was very worried when Shiori was in the hospital.
Tumblr media
BTW, I'm also interested in the biological father, Mr. Minamino. What did he do? Did Shiori receive any Widowed Parent's Allowance? How did he die? So many questions.....!!!!!

still thinking about that time my one friend could not fathom Kurama entering Shiori's body in the way he did, even with the visual reference. Flat out asked me what he actually did because it was too wild a thought. I had to explain that no, he did not leave himself as a baby on someone's doorstep.

kinda thinking about how the women who serve as maternal figures/raise kids in yyh are never quite ready for it. genkai's an arguable exception, but like.. atsuko had yusuke at 15, shizuru's basically in charge of kazuma full time in her early 20s/late teens (depending on version) with very very absent parents, and even shiori is given a kid she wasn't expecting, in the form of an old, old demon rather than like. a regular, blank slate ass human baby. and although shiori seems to do quite well with kurama, kurama can never be honest with shiori about who he is, or much of what he's seen. if he was, it'd probably make things far more complicated and overwhelming. atsuko, no matter how much she cares for yusuke, Could Not Have Been and thus wasn't ready to have him at 15. her attempts to make the most of that situation have had middling success at best. shizuru has also been placed into a parental role. we don't really know how long she's been raising kuwabara, but that's.. probably still parentification anyway. she shouldn't have to do that, and she shouldn't have to do that so young. and i think some of her coarseness with kuwa is out of frustration with her own inexperience + inadequacy + uncertainty, his not cooperating, and their parents for putting this on her in the first place. the ones who know the full extent of their situation grow desperate and it squeaks out in unpleasant ways, and the one who seems unbothered by it is the only one who has no idea that she's in way over her head. and i mean. ok. gonna preface this by saying keiko is NOT yusuke's mom in any sense of the word. but she does take care of him in a way atsuko couldn't manage to. she's often looking after him and cleaning up after his messes and stuff. she takes him on as a responsibility, and that is, in a way, a caretaker role. not to say that it SHOULD be her responsibility, but it's how she ends up being.
and when the stress of trying to make someone take care of themselves or be kind or good or Whatever goes awry, again, the violence and arguing and distance and ugliness of caring for someone reveals itself.
and i wonder about that. for a series dedicated to physical fighting as a form of communication, what does it say that this extends to the complicated, quietly desperate situations of so many of the women/girls it depicts, whom our more central characters were shaped and raised by?
hell, even hiei touches on this, because hina loved hiei, but there was no way she was prepared for him, obviously, nor for the pain of losing him. rui (whom i also see as a sort of caretaker figure to hiei, inasmuch as either of them were caretakers) literally throws him off a cliff because she couldn't face down the village elders, and out of some mixture of care for hina and, likely, fear for her own survival. and the guilt and pain of that killed hina and deeply wounded rui.
it's like motherhood, this thing that's so often treated as sacred and beautiful, is a kind of stitched up, painful, eggshell-walking thing that hurts parent and child and it's just. oughh
