2024/01/27　みなべ町まちあるき。友人の誘いで、空き家活用の相談対応にみなべ町の梅農家さんのところに出向きました。みなべ町はちょうど1/27から梅林が開園。暖かい日が続いたためか、めくるめくような春の風景を堪能してきました。　 空き家活用については、梅の農繁期の援農者の住環境向上のため空き家の活用ができないか、との相談。いくつかのハードルはありますが「みなべモデル」といえそうな活用のあり方を共有しました。旧知の先生とも同席でき、非常に有意義な訪問になりました。

CENTRAL MUSIC AWARDS 2023: Koby Symple crowned “Artiste of the Year” — Full List of Winners

The 12th edition of the Central Music Awards was held successfully on Saturday, 25th November, 2023 at the Center for National Culture in Cape Coast.

Winners for this year’s Central Music Awards were announced in grand style coupled with thrilling and electrifying performances from Koby Symple, Takum, Kwesi Tadi, Is Hommie, Essi, Minab, Emogy, Docta Flow, Empress Christy, Brother Ishmael, Jay Baba, Idi Kawawa, EK Nacosty, Marhany, Raggay Bee, Akwesi Xelout, You Know, Samaru and an authentic live band session from the Emintsimadze Band.

The 12th Central Music Awards had Asiedua and Kris Aggrey as the official MCs with DJ Kobby, DJ Mickay and DJ Pizil as the official DJs for the event night. The Central Music’s biggest night saw in attendance top Government officials, Traditional Rulers, Corporate Business Executives, Media Personalities, Executives from MUSIGA Central Region, Nominees and Music lovers.

The 2022/2023 music year brought out a lot of amazing music talents across the 22 districts in the central region. Within the year under review, 35 official award categories were unveiled with nominees from respective districts.

The Artiste of the Year category featured; Koby Symple, Takum, Docta Flow, Sobologeng and Smelling Good Geng.

Koby Symple was crowned as the Artiste of the Year for the Central Music Awards 2023. Special honorary awards were also presented to Nana Ekua Apeatsewah II, former Central Regional MUSIGA Chairperson, Hon. Francis Ejaku Donkoh, CEO of FED Kastle Multimedia and Barrister Daniels of ATL FM for their immense contribution towards the growth and development of the Music Industry in the central region.

Genmei (661-721) was Japan's fourth empress regnant. She was Empress Jitō's half-sister and her match in terms of ambition and political skills. Her rule was characterized by a development of culture and innovations. 

Ruling after her son

Like Jitō (645-703), Genmei was the daughter of Emperor Tenji but was born from a different mother. Jitō was both her half-sister and mother-in-law since Genmei had married the empress’ son, Prince Kusakabe (662-689). She had a son with him, Emperor Monmu (683-707). 

Kusakabe died early and never reigned, which led to Jitō's enthronement. The empress was then succeeded by her grandson Monmu. The latter’s reign was short. In his last will, he called for his mother to succeed him in accordance with the “immutable law” of her father Tenji. Genmei accepted. 

Steadfast and ambitious 

Genmei was made from the same mold as her half-sister. She proved to be a fearless sovereign, undeterred by military crises. 

She pursued Jitō's policies, strengthening the central administration and keeping the power in imperial hands. Among her decisions were the proscription of runaway peasants and the restriction of private ownership of mountain and field properties by the nobility and Buddhist temples. 

Another of her achievements was transferring the capital at Heijō-kyō (Nara) in 710, turning it into an unprecedented cultural and political center. Her rule saw many innovations. Among them were the first attempt to replace the barter system with the Wadō copper coins, new techniques for making brocade twills and dyeing and the settlement of experimental dairy farmers.

A protector of culture

Genmei sponsored many cultural projects. The first was the Kojiki, written in 712 it told Japan’s history from mythological origins to the current rulers. In its preface, the editor Ō no Yasumaro praised the empress:

“Her Imperial Majesty…illumines the univers…Ruling in the Purple Pavillion, her virtue extends to the limit of the horses’ hoof-prints…It must be saif that her fame is greater than that of Emperor Yü and her virtue surpasses that of Emperor Tang (legendary emperors of China)”.

In 713, she ordered the local governments to collect local legends and oral traditions as well as information about the soil, weather, products and geological and zoological features. Those local gazetteers (Fudoki) were an invaluable source of Japan’s ancient tradition.

Several of Genmei’s poems are included in the Man'yōshū anthology, including a reply by one of the court ladies.

From mother to daughter 

Genmei abdicated in 715 and passed the throne to her daughter, empress Genshō (680-748) instead of her sickly grandson prince Obito. This was an unprecedented situation, making the Nara period the pinnacle of female monarchy in Japan. 

Genmei would oversee state affairs until she died in 721. Before her death, she shaved her head and became a nun, becoming the first Japanese monarch to take Buddhist vows and establishing a long tradition.

No, no that's much more eloquent than mine. Headcanon accepted! I especially loved these bits:

The ending of the episode always gets me a but chocked up because we are told that the Musca is literally a defective other to its species, it goes away cuz its lonely and incapable of finding connection (similar to Harper I would say, tho she instead of rejecting it, she forcefully makes people stay, ive thoughts on that too, but some.other time)

Ah, yes. It felt incapable of connection, the same way Sam felt like a freak/other. Love your bit about Harper, that she forced her connections rather than fleeing them.

But its not and we do see it one more time when its people come and in a scene that to me reads as mourning ritual get the lone Musca home. The Musca isnt rejected by its people, they come and bring it home and mournfully carry it together. There's community shown very poignantly in that scene.

That's a sweet point. I like it. I think this gets at the feeling of rejection, rather than outright rejection. We see in vintage SPN that there are times when Sam is mentally spiraling, putting words into Dean's mouth that reflect his own insecurity rather than reality.

Even though the Musca left, even though it couldnt find a mate, even though it resorted to monstrous acts (whether the other Musca see it that way or not doesnt matter, we the audience do) its loved ones, its family was there at the end, they cared, they mourn and they are bringing it home together. Even with the bonds cut they way the episode implies, the musca was not actually alone, ut just couldnt see the community it had because of the self imposed loneliness/ inherent otherness.

So, yeah. I think that also gets at something Jody Mills was telling Sam in season...9? It's the one where Sam is surprised that Jody is into Church, and Jody explains that for some people a Church functions as a "family extender." When you have no living family, the Church (in theory) functions as a "soft place to land," no matter how badly you've messed up. Sam has family he can rely on (Dean). Jody uses Church to fill that role.

I like your point about not being able to see the love that's right in front of you.

Yes, haha. We love him for being Sam, maybe especially when he's being a total hypocritical disaster and fucking things up.

I think through all this the (shadow) meta of failure to thrive still hits. Since Sam "failed to live up and checklist all the items in the prescriptive American dream," he uses hunting to bind his new family together.

The AU hunters were literally gotten from another world/community and are now being "bound" by the hunting lifestyle in Sam's world. The Musca theme of binding goo is a shadow for this. "Killing to stay together," as it were.

We kill to stay alive. It's a microcosm for the horror of living.

Okay, maybe the metaphor isn't a total dud. It's just not one-to-one. :-)

I don't understand what the Zombie story and the Musca one should reveal about the characters. Visually, it looks like the Musca = Charlie, so Harper and the zombie are ??? Oh, really? That's so cool. I still have trouble thinking of myself as a "meta writer." I don't mean to be. I just like to ramble. But cool! It's probably mostly that we think alike and are sympatico in some key ways. :-) Always fun to find kindred spirits!

O P T I M I S M

I have so many thoughts on Optimism. It's one of my fave episodes! I actually did a re-watch-slash-convo with some friends on Discord and just transcribed the very, very, very LOOONG bulk of it today!

I haven't written much on the Musca. After spending a lot of time of @scoobydoodean's blog, I've just about decided the Musca plot is actually a Sam's emotions-through line more than it is a true dark mirror. Even AU Charlie is cheeky about it:

AU CHARLIE (annoyed at Sam, about the Musca): Your nifty metaphor has holes.

Basically, Charlie is saying that mirrors aren't one-to-one, and that trying to force-fit them into being one-to-one can be super annoying sometimes.

CHARLIE - Every two hundred years there is "bad egg". When a male fails to find a mate, he abandons his community and starts using peoples bodies to "nest". Binding them together with a viscous goo. And when the goo fits...

The Musca/fly is at face-value:

A. A bodysnatcher plot: In that regard, it could be like all angels, demons, or anyone inhabiting a body. (Cas, Lucifer, Michael, Crowley, etc.) Ergo, it's a dark, uncharitable Cas mirror the way Dave Mathers outlaw wraith was in Tombstone. That Cas "failed" among "his own people" and cruelly took up space in a human body. But that would be grossly oversimplifying, saying that Cas "should have stayed with his people," which ofc doesn't work.

It, as Charlie says, "has a lot of holes." @ilarual has written a lot about the totalitarian structure of Heaven. And Sam himself wants Cas around. As far as metaphors go, it's a dud.

B. It's a failure to thrive plot: Because the Musca "failed" in The Real World with its Own {eople, now it's wreaking havoc on others.

Sam himself "failed out" of Harvard. He "choked." Kevin Train and Patience Turner are also Failed Gifted Students. Losers who didn't live up to their potential. This could even apply to Chuck, binding together his characters because he's a Loser with a capital L.

ANYWAY, I feel like the Music plot is a "red herring" for a few reasons.

One: The main Harper plot is about breaking narratives, about not relying so much on books. And then Charlie says this:

CHARLIE: Goo. So, yeah. I'd say this is the right place. Now, I'm just trying to figure out what we are dealing with. Thus, books.

Aside: Later Cas says sarcastically in Ouroboros that Sam and Rowena, "Have many, many books."

Two: Sam has a tendency to see something and, like, imprint on it. He tends to fall into "It's just like me!" instead of speaking frankly about the present situations and emotions.

*In American Nightmare, he sees Madga Peterson, an abused child* -> "She's just like me!"

*In Somewhere in Between Heaven and Hell, he sees someone lying about something completely unrelated to his current situation* ->"Omg, they're lying to them, like I'm lying to Dean! It's just like me!"

*In Lost & Found, he meets Jack Kline, who is Lucifer's son "OMG, he's just like me!" -> *spoiler alert* Jack is not in fact much like Sam at all. -> Sidenote: instead of speaking frankly about how Dean is grieving, how Lucifer killed Cas and likely killed Mary, he uses complex euphemisms with Jack, ones that actually obscure the reality of the situation! This winds up annoying Jack and making him pull away from Sam.

IMHO...Sam isn't...naturally all that great with emotions.

He tries really, really hard, and he loves patterns, but he's always seeming to force-fit situations and scenarios into neat little boxes so he can passively-aggressively use it to indirectly communicate something he feels about himself.

He has a very cognitive empathy style. Bless him.

So what's REALLY going on here?

Well. In this episode, he wants Charlie to stay. He wants Charlie to stay and fill a void the other Charlie left behind. He wants Charlie to stay really, really badly. And he beats around the bush about it.

At first, he sidesteps his own emotions by passive-aggressively implying that it's Dean that in fact needs her.

CHARLIE: He'll be fine. Your brother, I mean. He's got other friends, right? SAM: Plenty. Uhm, he used to have a pretty damn good wingman. CHARLIE: So call that guy to check on him. SAM: That guy was you. CHARLIE: No, it wasn't. SAM: Right, I, uh, sorry. I didn't mean that.

And then by trying to make the case fit her.

He's very indirect and weird about it. Because he's Sam. (It's a contrast to the effortless communication style we see from characters like Jack and Dean in this very episode.)

SAM: Charlie, you can't just quit and go live on a mountain somewhere. People need people. CHARLIE: Why? Cause they're the luckiest people in the world? SAM: Look, come on. We just do. We're social animals. CHARLIE: Emphasis on animals. SAM: Yeah, but you're also a hunter. The things that we've seen, it's not so easy to just walk away from it all. Believe me, I've tried. Our Charlie tried. CHARLIE: Yeah, well again, she ain't me. It's my life, Sam. Not hers. And not yours.

Ah, yes. Instead of saying, “I want you here,” it’s, “people need people.”

And Hell, sometimes indirect communication works! Like how Dean and Cas use Felix the snake to indirectly communicate with Jack in Peace of Mind!

But the difference with Sam is...he's not using this indirect communication style to find out how Charlie feels (the way Dean and Cas use the snake to suss out how Jack feels).

No, he's using the whole thing to try to tell Charlie what he thinks is best for her! To tell her things, not find out things.

Eventually, he breaks and says what he actually thinks, but only after AU Charlie is starting to lose her patience with him:

SAM (faux-sadly): Got to say, I do feel kind of bad for the Musca. I mean, he could have been happy if he'd stayed with his people. Didn't have to go off on his own just because... CHARLIE (exasperated): Okay, I get it. I am just like the bug and I shouldn't go out on my own.

OMG, Sammy! It's okay if we want to hit Sam sometimes, right? I too wanted to hit him after he said this to Charlie.

CHALIE: But your nifty metaphor has holes. I wasn't looking for love. I found it and I lost it. And I didn't kill people and literally nest in their body parts so...(Scene cuts to other Musca removing the body of the dead one) SAM: Okay, yeah I know, I know, How about this? Don't leave. 

I think this is a cheeky nod to the fact that Cas and Dean weren't looking for love either. In fact, they tried (and keep trying) really, really hard not to love each other. Their real life was faaaar more complicated than some simple "bodysnatcher plot."

But thank God--Sam finally says outright what he needed to say to Charlie: Don't leave.

Now, it probably would've been better if he's gone a step further: "I don't want you to leave," but for Sam, this is pretty good progress.

SAM: Hear me out. Sure some people can do bad things when they're desperate or scared. But the guy we just saved, he has a wife and children. I'm not saying that all people are good people or even that most people are but if we help people then maybe they'll help people and all that. And that's worth it. Even with all the tears and death. It's worth it. CHARLIE: Just to be super clear, I am not like the fly monster. (Sam chuckles) But, I'll think about staying.

So I think OVERALL the Musca plot is really about highlighting Sam's difficult communication style, and I think it's intentionally being cheeky about it how it's using a really dumb metaphor with gaping holes!

It's about how Sam tries to force-fit the case of the week into saying what he wants it to say...instead of just saying it.

I think Sam has a little bit of a "mental main character syndrome." He sees a scenario and moves directly into cognitive empathy, reading the situation and thinking:

How can I apply this to myself? Or make it a stand-in for either something I want to believe about myself or a stand-in for something I want to say indirectly?

Sometimes you'll see ppl insist that Sam is the "MC" because every storyline tells you "something about Sam." But I'm more in the camp that it's Sam's inherent cognitive style of empathy at work, desperately reworking anything and everything to make it apply to himself.

Whereas Cas and Dean (and Jack) have a truer emotional style of empathy, connecting with people for who they actually are, as they are.

That's not to say that both styles can't be manipulative when we want them to be. But Sam really struggles with his style in a way I feel like Dean and Cas do not. Dean and Cas perhaps don't even realize what effective communicators they actually are!

Amemasu

Look up the term ‘Amemasu’, and you might be met with the simple white-spotted char. However, tack on the word ‘yokai’, and you’ll learn of giant whales or fish from Ainu folklore that live in the lakes of northern Honshu. There are said to be multiple Amemasu, with some of the biggest living in Lake Mashū and Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaidō.

An Amemasu is a shapeshifting creature, able to turn into a human. It usually becomes a beautiful young woman with the intent of luring foolish young men to their deaths. You can identify them when in human form, however, as their skin will be cold and clammy, much like that of a fish.

There are a few different legends about the creature. Similar to Bahamut, a fish we’ll get to soon, the residents of Hokkaidō believe that the Amemasu holds up the earth. When the giant fish or whale becomes tired, it shifts, causing earthquakes. In Akita Prefecture, there’s a place called Amemasu Otoshi. According to legend, the Amemasu was so powerful that it was able to kill a hawk (despite dying, as well, in the end).

Another legend is about Lake Kussharo, also in Hokkaidō. An Amemasu resided in the lake, one with a head that looked much like a rock. One day, Otashitonkuru, an Ainu hero, took a harpoon and tried to poke the cryptid’s eyes out. The fish fought back, and, desperate to hold onto the harpoon, Otashitonkuru grabbed ahold of a large rock. The creature ended up pulling so hard that it dragged to rock into the middle of the lake, creating the small island that now sits in the middle.

Another legend comes from Minabe, Wakayama prefecture. A large whirlpool appeared in a deep pond, where a giant Amemasu lived. It would emerge from the pond every spring, taking the form of a beautiful young woman. For two or three days, it would lure men away, taking them to a place where nobody could find them. Then, one day, a cormorant dove into the pond to hunt for fish, and was swallowed by the creature. However, the Amemasu floated to the surface, dead. The cormorant burst from the creature’s body.

A final tale is about the flat Konsengen’ya plain. A deer came down to have a drink of water, and was subsequently swallowed by an Amemasu. However, the deer’s antler rip open the cryptid’s stomach, killing it. The corpse of the creature blocks the lake, making floods a real danger. So, a god in the form of a bird warns people living nearby. Those who lived upstream took to higher ground, while those who lived downstream didn’t believe the bird. They go and find the Amemasu, dragging away its body. This caused the built up water to flow downstream and wipe out everything, creating the Konsengen’ya plain.

In addition to the legends, the Amemasu is said to attack boats and cause earthquakes.

Another southern name today—that's three in a row! 南部 is almost always read Nanbu, but in rare cases, you might see Nanbe, Nakabu, or Minabe.

南 is read みなみ, ナン, or ナ. It means south.

部 is read べ or ブ. It's the source of the kana へ. It means part/portion, section (e.g. bureau, class, department), or copy. It’s also the counter for copies of printed material.

To be specific, number of copies is 部 [ブ], number of pages is 枚 [マイ], and page numbers are 頁 [ぺーじ]. Simple, right?

The official launch and unveiling of nominees for the 12th edition of the Central Music Awards finally took place at Fays Lounge in Cape Coast on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

The Central Music Awards is the most prestigious regional music awards scheme in Ghana which has for the past 11 years, celebrated, recognized, honoured and awarded deserving and hardworking musicians who have contributed immensely towards the growth and development of the music industry in the central region.

The official launch and nominees unveiling which was held at Fays Lounge in Cape Coast saw in attendance Music Business Executives, Musicians, Media Personalities, Bloggers, Promoters, industry players and members of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Central Region.

In line with the activities for this year’s Central Music Awards, voting begins on Monday, 2nd October 2023 and ends on Wednesday, 22nd November 2023. The general public can vote for their favourite artiste to win in respective categories by dialling *920*208# or visit njet.app/jetcast

The main event night for the 12th Central Music Awards is slated for Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Center for National Culture, Cape Coast.
