10: an injury-related memory and 14: a special memory
an injury-related memory ;;
"Just...can you just hold on like two seconds?" He held his hand up to Milton's face to stop him. Brack shook his head. This was the only time since he'd moved into Area 51 that he had tried to keep this man from touching him. "I just need a minute, okay?"
"Brackish, it will take two seconds. Just let me pop it back in-"
"See, it's the word 'pop' that I don't like. Shoulders aren't supposed to 'pop' in and out of place, so, maybe we should just think...maybe you could knock me out or something first?"
Milton looked at him with such a confused expression. "It's not a big deal. Just...let me..." He put a hand on Okun's shoulder and another near his elbow.
And then Okun started to panic.
"MAYbe we should just, wait. No. Milt. Just wait. I am...I am ordering you to just, can't we-" His voice was getting higher and higher. He was panicking. Before he could manage to fight him off, however, Milton pushed his shoulder back into place as Brackish squealed at the top of his lungs.
Milton could not have looked more unimpressed. "See? All done."
Brack struggled to catch his breath. "You could have killed me..."
a special memory ;;
"Okay, Hugh, just like Daddy taught you okay? Ready?" Was this going to work? Probably not. It hadn't worked before, and Hugh wasn't very good at things like this. All the extra doo-hickeys and wires made it hard for him to move around, but damn if Brack wasn't going to try anyway.
He held his hands up to tell Hugh to wait, looked at Milton excitedly, and then ran a few feet away, across the warehouse. "Okay, Hugh. Throw it!"
The ball went...about half a foot...but the expression of excitement never left Okun's face. "Good job, Buddy! That one was further than last time! We'll get it, we'll get it..." He shuffled back across the warehouse and picked up the ball to bring it back over to Hugh. "Great work, Kiddo."

Makes Me Feel Fine: The Fake Book Project
Fake Book Used
The New York Times Great Songs of the ‘70s: 81 Songs for Voice Piano and Guitar: Rock, Soul, Pop, Disco, Folk, Jazz, Broadway and the Movies by Milton Okun
Notes
Singing: I’m starting to make the song my own. I’m not singing like Seals and Crofts, but like myself. It’s raw, which is better than anything I’ve done before. I can say confidently that I’m not Seals and Crofts. If anything I’m trying to make the song less insipid, if that’s possible, so I’m adding more growl to my singing. Of course, there are some iffy spots, but they sound purposeful for the first time. I’m enjoying my harmonies as the backing vocals really ground the scratchy main vocal. I think I may a few more attempts at singing like this to get the vocals to place that will allow me to really do my own thing.
Playing: The music sounds good, in fact, I may even say it’s tight. I’m now making a considerate attempt to be messy, but also correct. Something I couldn’t have imagined doing early on. The main line, the chorus, and the bridge all sound good. There are mistakes, but I’m now going with them instead of letting them hang me up. You can pick out single mistakes but it’s not a series of mistakes, which is a major improvement. The goal will be to perfect my slapdash playing style. I think it’ll help me find new pathways forward.
Recording: I recorded the vocal track at a level lower than the guitars and keyboards. I didn’t do this on on purpose, but I admit I like how it turned out. The vocals don’t sound on top of the guitars, but equal to them, which again, helps to hide the rough edges of my singing. I also like that keeping the vocals and guitars at the same level makes the harmony sections pop. I did spend more time on the effects for everything. I was trying to get a crunchier, lo-fi sound, which I think works with the song’s sloppiness.
Overall: I’ll confess that since I hadn’t played this song for a few months I needed more than one take for both the guitar and my singing. I did this to get reacquainted with the song. Having to learn the song again meant I didn’t get to experiment with my sound like I wanted to. I did play faster, which I think sounds better, and I sang the lead vocal softer, which I also like. However, neither is that much of a change. Yet I definitely think this attempt has way more life than any of my previous attempts.
