hello
hello there! my chosen name is Say, I'm a cis-white-bi-ADHD-dyslexic-midwestern gal living here in the USA. I'm in my third year of full time caregiving for my mother with Parkinson's disease, while earning my Associates in Science of Nursing - RN degree at my local community college. I want to share my inner work and the ripple effects I see it playing out in my caregiving, my marriage, relationships and nursing degree. I want to share tips, tricks and deep thought work I do to continue living a full life with cherished memories in it. I have large incredible dreams I'm pursuing and would love an audience of caregivers to help uplift each other and build community where we share these unique hardships & blessings. I love reading, researching, learning and sharing insights I find along the way to help others in need. It's not easy what we are doing but I know it's a beautiful life when we are able to find love & care for ourselves first. (SO HARD TO DO)!
Join me if you like! It's our caring journey too! <3

A Decade of Care
New blog post commemorating my 10 year care-versary! #MillennialCaregiver
I assumed the journey that began in February of 2013 would last a few weeks to a few months at the most. Ten years later and I am still caring for my mother and now care for my father as well. Beyond advocating for my parents, I now advocate on behalf of family caregivers, disabled people, and older adults across the country through my career. I am a writer and a speaker; I even have my own IMDB…

She’s There, I’m Here
A. Farias 2017
This insightful article was written by a millennial facing the prospect of becoming a full-time caregiver.  As of 2016, there are approximately 10 Million of them.
We help.
Two worlds
She’s there and I’m here and I feel bad. The guilt has just caught up to me and I’m putting my life on pause for my grandmother. She did the same for me when I was growing up. I wouldn’t be who I am without her. Now she’s here with me and things are not the same. My phone was always Facebook and Snapchat. Today, it’s calls to the doctor, finding my way to the hospital, and voicemails from the pharmacy. I’m supposed to do so much for my grandmother but I don’t know where to start. If anything, I should be asking that about my education, career, relationships, and my future, not so much hers.
She’s there, I’m here
She’s my grandmother and I’m her granddaughter. Why is it suddenly the other way around? I don’t want this and I know she doesn’t want this, either. She’s there, I’m here. She wants her life back and so do I. She wants to walk without having me in the same room. She wants to feel independent, not dependent. How can I give my grandmother the care she needs and still take care of myself? Well, the answer turns out to be surprisingly simple: with help.
Help
I found help with The Electronic Caregiver. It’s more than just a medical emergency and health management system. The ECG is exactly what we both needed. My job is not to hover over my grandmother’s life, but to help her maintain her own life. This system reassures me that with her freedom, her body and health are still in good hands. Promoting wellness, extending lifespan, and ongoing safety in case of the unexpected is the most valued and memorable decision we made together to take care of each other.
And finally, we are more comforted now knowing she’s protected. The ECG home care system reminds her to take her medication, makes sure she is active at home, and if anything happens, I know she won’t be all alone. As I continue to venture towards my future, I am here and she is there and The Electronic Caregiver confidently keeps us in the same picture.

Engaging Millennials Means Meeting Them Where They Are
Tumblr media
According to the AARP report, 1 in 4 family caregivers today is a Millennial, and that number will continue to grow as Boomers continue to age. A recent survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, however, showed that overall, younger caregivers feel less prepared than older caregivers in taking on this role. The question now, then, is how we as an industry can better serve Millennials and, ultimately, create better policies surrounding caring for our aging in the years ahead.

Posted @withregram • @hospicedoctorswidow Realizing an ambitious #Vision such as: a peaceful, dignified death; a smooth transition from caregiver to griever; and mentally and emotionally healthy long-term future won’t happen by mantra alone. This triad Vision will require planning, preparation, discussions, and decisions. CEOs develop proformas and projections. As as a family caregiver, you have access to a FREE planning and preparation guide by downloading my At Peace Tool Kit: A Guide to Being At Peace with End of Life. The link is in my bio. The download will take you through the key elements of this planning and preparing. A realistic timeline for completing this plan might be as long as several weeks or months depending. #eol #DeathPositiveMovement #CaregiverAsCEO #ChiefEverythingOfficer #MillennialCaregivers #FamilyCaregivers Link in bio -- it is FREE. https://www.instagram.com/p/CaPaO-jFJaN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Posted @withregram • @hospicedoctorswidow Make a #Mantra that centers you as #CaregiverAsCEO and post it where you will see it frequently. Repeat it to yourself and to others when necessary. As CEO of several different healthcare organizations, the mantra I always took with me was, “Work Hard. Work Smart and Be Kind.” The “and” is important here because all three were of equal importance. Just because someone was an excellent nurse, technically, did not mean we traded that for that nurse’s inability to be kind to other employees in the process. As CEO, I shared this mantra with managers. It provided a center when evaluating an employee or an incident. A mantra uses simple language so that everyone understands. A mantra can be posted, repeated and said in unison with others who might need reminding. During his illness, Bob’s mantra was “In acceptance lies peace.” Feeling at peace was very important to Bob. It was to me as well, yet as his only caregiver, I probably came back to the “We’re going through two different processes, he is dying I am surviving,” just as much. And perhaps, the balance of “Hope (for the best) and Prepare (for the worst)” was another mantra that served me well. “The miracle is peace,” is what I wrote at the end of my last couple of updates to friends and family as Bob was dying and is what I write when I sign one of my books for someone. As a #FamilyCaregiver I think balancing two seemingly different or even opposite notions with an “and” rather than an “or”/ “but” is an important part of repetitive phrases that get you through the day-to-day of the #Mission and toward the successful realization of the #Vision. Examples are: “He is dying AND I am surviving” and “Hope for the best AND prepare for the worst.” #ChiefEverythingOfficer #MillennialCaregivers #CaregivingForTheElderly https://www.instagram.com/p/CaH0Jz9ur5Q/?utm_medium=tumblr

Posted @withregram • @hospicedoctorswidow Effective CEOs may set and achieve ambitious goals but they do not commit to accomplishing the impossible or make promises they may not be able to keep. #Caregivers do NOT make promises you may not be able to keep. For examples: Do not promise your #CareRecipient Recipient that you will never admit them to a care facility. Do not promise your Care Recipient they will die at home. Do not promise your Care Recipient you will always be there. In fact, stay away from the words “always” and “never” when discussing the future. You might think well, my Care Recipient has advanced dementia, so they won’t remember if I make a promise and I am not able to keep it. Here’s the thing, YOU will remember that you made a promise and did not keep it. And right there, you may have put the portion of your #Vision that is your own emotionally and mentally healthy future into jeopardy. #CaregiverAsCEO doesn’t make promises they may not be able to keep. Alternatively say, “I understand that is a priority; together, we will do everything in our power to _______.” With this phrasing, you are: acknowledging to your person that you understand their desire and goal; including their participation by using “we;” and not putting it all on yourself. Again, if your Care Recipient does not have the cognitive ability to understand, you are doing this for the health and well-being of your future self. #MillennialCaregivers #CaregivingForTheElderly #ChiefEverythingOfficer @iallyinc https://www.instagram.com/p/CaHz-R8uXie/?utm_medium=tumblr
