I wish you would write a fic... about the Superfamily 💖
“I want a baby.”
Steve looks up at his husband. “Tony, what the fuck?”
“A-a baby. A kid. A child.” Tony sits next to him on the couch. His eyes are shining with excitement.
“We can’t get pregnant,” Steve points out, turning back to the book in his hands. Tony grabs it and throws it on the coffee table. “Hey!”
“There are other- other options,” Tony says, grasping Steve’s hand tightly and staring into his baby blue eyes nervously. “Adoption. We could adopt.”
The supersoldier sighs, shaking his head. “Tones, we can’t take care of a baby. How about a dog? Or a cat, cats are always-”
“Steve, please,” Tony whispers, eyes suddenly filled with tears. Steve frowns and cups his husband’s cheeks. “I want a baby. Can you just- just please, think about it. Please.”
Steve is so shocked, by Tony’s tears, by the desperate tone in his voice, by the eagerness on every inch of his face, that he nods. “I will,” he promises.
The love, the relief, and the excitement in Tony’s eyes make it all worth it.
~~~~~
At first, Steve thinks Tony has forgotten about the whole baby thing.
He should have known better.
Two weeks later, Tony barges into the training room, breathing heavily, eyes wild.
“Tony, what the hell? What happened?” He hurries towards his husband. In lieu of greeting, Tony shoves a Starkpad into his hands.
“I found him,” he says breathlessly.
“Who?” Steve asks, still eyeing the other man worriedly. He still hasn’t looked at the Starkpad. Tony gestures to it in frustration.
“Our baby.”
Steve freezes. He looks at the pad.
It’s a series of emails from one Mary Parker. Apparently, she and her husband recently split up and she is no longer able to provide for her newborn son.
“Tony, honey…” he says slowly, apologetically. “I don’t know if we can take care of a baby.”
Something in Tony’s face breaks. “Right,” he whispers, more to himself than Steve. “Right, what-what was I thinking? We- I can’t be a father.” Steve opens his mouth, to apologize, to take it back, to do anything, but Tony turns before he can and walks back to the elevator.
Steve blinks back the tears in his eyes. He’s broken something inside of Tony, and he doesn’t know how to fix it. Doesn’t know if he can, really.
He looks back at the Starkpad, re-reading the emails, filled with so much enthusiasm. We would love to adopt Peter! Can we meet him soon? and He’s perfect. He’s perfect for us. My husband and I can’t wait to meet him!
What have I done? Steve thinks.
He scrolls down, and finds a picture of a tiny- literally tiny, the kid could easily fit in his palm- baby, swaddled in a pink blanket with a soft hat on his head. He’s covered in wires and tubes, but even Steve has to admit it- he looks perfect.
~~~~~
Tony won’t talk to him. It’s fair, but it hurts all the same. When they get ready for bed, Tony opens his mouth for the first time in hours and informs him that he’s sleeping on the couch.
Steve knows he deserves it.
The next morning, JARVIS tells him that Tony is in the lab and should not be disturbed. Is it Steve’s imagination, or does the AI sound colder than usual?
They can’t take care of a baby, though. Raising a tiny human for 18+ years? They just can’t do that.
Right?
He pulls up the picture of the baby- no, Peter.
What harm is there in meeting him? he thinks.
Tony ignores the knocking (pounding) on the lab's reflective glass walls until Steve finally shouts “I wanna meet Peter!”
The door slides open. “Really?” Tony says, disbelief clear in his voice.
“Yeah,” Steve says. “Yeah, I really do.”
Tony stares at him, then bursts into tears, sinking into his chest weakly. Steve does his best to soothe him before realizing that these are happy tears, relieved ones, and that Tony couldn’t stop crying even if he tried.
“Did you sleep at all last night?” he asks his husband gently. Tony laughs, shakes his head. “Tony.”
“I know, I know. I just couldn’t.”
Steve frowns sadly. “I’m sorry, Tony.”
The billionaire just shrugs. “Maybe you were right.”
“I wasn’t,” Steve says firmly, waiting until their eyes meet. “You’re gonna be a great father. We can do it.”
Tony stares back at him, and Steve realizes suddenly how terrified his spouse is. “We can do it,” he says again.
“We can do it,” Tony echoes, and maybe, just for a second, he believes him.
~~~~~
From the instant they lay eyes on Peter, they’re both hooked. He’s even tinier in person, with rosy cheeks, thin brown curls, beautiful big doe eyes, with ten tiny little fingers and ten tiny little toes.
He has a breathing tube, which nearly sends Tony into a panic attack until Mary explains that it’s only there for a few more days, just in case. Now Tony is terrified that Peter will get sick and won’t be able to breathe, but Mary assures him that he’s been stable for a few days now and should be fine.
Tony marvels at the fact that this tiny human is only five days old. Only five days in the world, and already so much has happened. “He’s beautiful,” he whispers, gazing down into the incubator. Steve squeezes his shoulder.
Mary smiles. “You can hold him, if you want,” she says.
“Really?!” Tony gasps, suddenly filled with excitement and terror. “Is-is it safe?”
“Wouldn't lie to you, would I?” the woman laughs, and plucks Peter out of the incubator. “Here ya go.”
Tony’s hands are shaking as he accepts the baby, cradling the tiny body to his chest gingerly, horrified he might somehow hurt this precious child. “You got it,” Mary says.
Tony looks at Peer- really looks at him, taking in the pale freckles on the bridge on his nose, his cupid’s bow lips, his dainty little eyelashes and his adorable chocolate eyes. “Hey,” he murmurs, voice cracking. “Hi, Peter. Hiya, Pete. I-I’m your dad, baby. I’m Dad.” Tears are streaming down his face, and he sniffs loudly. Peter blinks a little and makes a curious cooing noise. “Sorry, honey. So sorry.” He’s starting to sob now, but he doesn’t want to let his baby go. Steve wraps an arm around his shoulders and grasps Peter’s hand between the pad of his thumb and his pointer finger.
“Hey Peter,” he says. He’s not great with emotions, especially with a stranger around, even though Mary seems like a wonderful woman. “Nice to meetcha, kiddo. I’m, um- I’m your other dad. I’m your Papa.” He’s crying now too. They’re both wondering how they ever could have lived before this sweet child came into their lives, and it’s barely been five minutes.
Tony laughs, sobs, and laughs again. “He’s perfect,” he says to Mary, who has been staring at a painting across the hall politely.
She grins. “Glad to hear it. I’d hate for this little guy to go into foster care. You two seem like you’re gonna be great dads.”
The rest of the hour feels like a blur for the two new parents, the only thing solid each other and their baby boy. They sign adoption papers numbly, Tony still cradling the baby in his arms. They get a quick instruction on how to change diapers, prepare bottles, deal with fevers, earaches, and teething, and then they’re in the car with Happy, Peter strapped into a carseat, finally going home.
They haven’t had time to set up a nursery, really, they haven’t had time for anything. Happy buys them a bassinet, a mobile, and a shit ton of baby food and baby formula.
They sit on the couch together, Peter once again in Tony’s arms, fast asleep. There are going to be a lot of hurdles ahead, a lot of crying, a lot of worrying, but above all, a lot of love.
“I love you so much, Peter,” Tony whispers.
“I love you too, Peter,” Steve whispers.
Well, it’s time!
THE 2021 MACKOLADES
For those that don’t know, the Mackolades are my personal awards for the movies that I saw for the first time each calendar year (which makes this sound more long-running than it is, oops). Not just new releases, but anything that was new to me. The full list of eligible films can be found here if you feel like going through over 200 movies, but below are the highlights (for me) and a few of my thoughts.
Tumblr media
Favorite Drama:
The Handmaiden (2016) dir. Park Chan-wook In The Heights (2021) dir. Jon M. Cho
 The Matrix Resurrections (2021) dir. Lana
 Wachowski
 Promising Young Woman (2021) dir. Emerald
 Fennell
 West Side Story (2021) dir. Steven Spielberg
Drama is the lineup that excites me the most this year. Every one of these movies are Moments for me, they’re all 10/10, I love each one with all my heart. But I’ll be honest, I’ve known In The Heights was winning since I first saw it in theaters in June. The December releases did give it a run for its money in the final inning, though. The Matrix series has always been really important to me, and Resurrections is such a worthy successor to the original. (I know people will say “why are you putting it in Drama?” but what other category could I put it in?? And it’s too good to exclude purely because I don’t have an Action category.) And then West Side Story… I mean come on. Simply flawless. But Heights held on in my heart.
Tumblr media
Favorite Horror:
Candyman (2021) dir. Nia DaCosta
Hell House, LLC (2016) dir. Stephen Cognetti
 Last Night In Soho (2021) dir. Edgar Wright
 Rent-A-Pal (2020) dir. Jon Stevenson
 Trick ‘r Treat (2007) dir. Michael Dougherty
This was a good year for me with horror, but not a great one. Last year it was a dead heat between Suspiria (2018) and The Perfection, which are both capital-f Favorites, but this year, it’s kinda like… well I really liked all of these, but they’re not on the level of last year’s frontrunners. That said, I feel good about my choice of Hell House, LLC. I’m usually wary of found-footage horror, but this one delivers. It gave me the best scares of the year, with delicious pacing and plotting, culminating in some true insanity that I cannot recommend enough.
Tumblr media
Favorite Comedy:
The Babysitter (2017) dir. McG
 The Great Muppet Caper (1981) dir. Jim Henson
 Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005) dir. Andy Fickman
 Single All The Way (2021) dir. Michael Mayer
 Waiting For Guffman (1996) dir. Christopher Guest
Okay. Let’s do comedy. This is, again, a less exciting category for me, because of the shadow of last year’s Mackolades. That one was between five movies that all could’ve won, whereas this one… I could honestly take any of these off and I wouldn’t really miss them. Don’t get me wrong, I loved all of them, but none with the same passion as Romy & Michelle or Muriel’s Wedding or Tragedy Girls. That said, it’s been a very Muppet-y year for us, so it feels right to honor that by giving the Mackolade to The Great Muppet Caper. We reference Diana Rigg’s line “it’s plot exposition, it has to go somewhere” constantly, and that alone gives it a special place in my heart.
Tumblr media
Favorite Series:*
Blade (3/3)
 The Conjuring Universe (5/8)
 Fear Street (3/3)
Friday the 13th (8/12)
 Resident Evil (4/6)
Now we’re talking! I randomly bought the whole Resident Evil series on Blu-ray earlier this year, because I could get all six for like… $18? Something like that. And I’d seen the first two already and enjoyed them, so I figured it was a safe bet. And boy, was I right. Brendan magnanimously agreed to watch them with me, and even they ended up somewhat enjoying them. They’re dumb and loud and often incoherent, but they’re even more often fun. Stan Milla Jovovich. I can’t wait to binge these again someday.
Tumblr media
Biggest Surprise:
The Associate (1996) dir. Donald Petrie
 Hell Fest (2018) dir. Gregory Plotkin
 Hellbent (2004) dir. Paul Etheredge
 Sorority Row (2009) dir. Stewart Hendler
 Zombeavers (2014) dir. Jordan Rubin
We set our expectations to rock bottom before watching Zombeavers, and we ended up having so much fun. There’s not much to say, it’s stupid but it fully knows and embraces it.
Biggest Letdown:
Blade: Trinity (2004) dir. David S. Goyer Blinded By The Light (2019) dir. Gurinder Chadha
 Camp (2003) dir. Todd Graff
 Fear Street Part III: 1666 (2021) dir. Leigh Janiak
 Halloween Kills (2021) dir. David Gordon Green
We were rooting for you! How could you do this to us???
Tumblr media
Favorite Lead Actress Performance:
Cate Blanchett, Nightmare Alley (2021)
 Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday
 (2021)
Rebecca Hall, The Night House (2021)
 Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix Resurrections
 (2021)
 Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman (2021)
Anya Taylor-Joy, Last Night In Soho (2021)
 Rachel Zegler, West Side Story (2021)
This was suuuuch a difficult choice to make. Andra Day, my unofficial runner up, was so incredible, but it boiled down to two things - I can’t remember anything specific about her performance, and it wasn’t nearly as fun as Cate’s. Whereas Cate was eating everything she touched, in such a delightful and delicious way, and her final line, “I’ll live,” delivered through clenched teeth and a nearly-strangled throat, is stamped on my brain.
Favorite Supporting Actress Performance:
Ariana DeBose, West Side Story (2021)
 Grace Jones, Vamp (1986)
 Olga Merediz, In The Heights (2021)
 Sandra Oh, Under The Tuscan Sun (2003)
 Daphne Rubin-Vega, In The Heights (2021)
 Dianne Wiest, The Associate (1996)
 Vanessa Williams, Candyman (2021)
For the first time in Mackolades history…
Tumblr media
I’ve been in love with Olga’s performance for months now. Pacienca y Fé has been a top-three favorite showtune of mine for years, and seeing her immortalize it, and herself, was incredible, to say nothing of all the other amazing work she did. But then another musical came along, and with it came a contender. Ariana DeBose danced her way into my heart and I simply couldn’t leave her out. Two show-stopping ladies, and I couldn’t choose between them. And I don’t have to! Because they’re my awards and there are no stakes anyway.
Favorite Actor Performance:
Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
 (2020)
 Christopher Guest, Waiting For Guffman (1996)
 Neil Patrick Harris, The Matrix Resurrections (2021) Robin de Jesús, Camp (2003)
 Levi Miller, Better Watch Out (2016)
 Keanu Reeves, The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
 Josh Andrés Rivera, West Side Story (2021)
If you’d told me a year ago that my favorite male performance of 2021 would be Chino, I’d have been so confused. But after Ariana, Mr. Rivera is the performance I’ve thought of the most from West Side Story, and easily the male performance I’ve pondered the most from the entire year. From the highs of dancing with Maria at the gym to the lows he sinks to, I’ve not been able to get Chino out of my head.
Tumblr media
The Toni “She Has The Range” Collette Award for Multi-Genre Excellence:**
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Candyman (2021)/The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
As the year went on, I got more and more nervous for this category. For a long time the biggest contender was Tom Hanks, for his work in That Thing You Do! and The Terminal, but those just weren’t the types of performances I wanted to recognize with this. And then came an 11th hour release and the balm to my worries. I was browsing the cast list for The Matrix Resurrections and noticed a familiar name, and upon seeing his Candyman credit I finally recognized the familiar face our new Morpheus is wearing, and knew I had our new Collette honoree. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II disappears into both roles, to the point of being virtually unrecognizable if you don’t know to look for him. I hope both movies get the sequel(s) they so richly deserve, so we can see more of both performances. And ugh, I’m so happy I get to give both Candyman and Resurrections a win.
Tumblr media
Hottest Daddy:
Richard Gere, Runaway Bride (1999)
 Bob Hoskins, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)
 Craig T. Nelson, Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)
 Jimmy Smits, In The Heights (2021)
 Fred Ward, Big Business (1988)
This was the hardest category to make a final decision for, but it’s also the one I want to talk about least. Pretty men that I want to blow. Do I really need to explain anything?
*Eligibility for Favorite Series/IP:
     (# eligible films/# in series) > 0.5
     (# in series > 2)
**Criteria for the Collette:
     Excellence in two or more movies of vastly
 different genres and tones
some sketches of Romi and her sisters, Astra and Milla, but if they were done in my style, and then their original designs. Astra (blue, oldest sister) tucks her ears into her headband, to avoid getting them grabbed on in combat, being the most melee fighter on the trio. Milla is more stealthy and Romi is the type a gal to have a lot of tricks up her sleeve. Romi’s symbol is a star, Milla’s is a stylized sun, and Astra’s is a crescent moon with a ring. Why? Because they’re from space, that’s why.
Este diseñador de vestuario reparó el ala de una mariposa, y luego miró encantado mientras se alejaba volando.
Romy McCloskey es un diseñador de vestuario por entrenamiento, con una especialidad en trabajo de cuentas intrincado que exige precisión. También cría y libera mariposas monarca en su hogar de Texas.
Sucedió que estas dos habilidades se cruzaron en un día reciente cuando ella realmente realizó la cirugía en una de las alas de su monarca herido, una operación que salvó su vida y le permitió irse volando para migrar.
Esperemos que tenga una margarita en México con sus amigos ", dijo McCloskey, de 43 años, madre de dos niños. Romy McCloskey reparó un ala de mariposa con artículos domésticos.
La historia de la catástrofe de mariposas se convirtió en una historia victoria que comenzó hace unas semanas cuando McCloskey estaba en su casa en los suburbios de Houston y miró sus capullos, sólo para ver a su gato casero Floki golpeándolos, pensando que eran juguetes. La pata de Floki había derribado a uno, hiriéndolo fatalmente, y dejó a otro dañado.
"Tenía una grieta en el capullo", dijo McClosky. "Pensé," por favor no dejes que muera ".
Pocos días más tarde, vio como empezaron a emerger mariposas del capullo agrietado y otras ocho. El que tenía el capullo agrietado salió con un ala destrozada y no pudo volar.
McCloskey se sintió mal por ello, sabiendo que esto significaba que el monarca no podía hacer su famosa migración a México. Los monarcas son famosos por su viaje anual, a menudo miles de millas, a México, y por su viaje multigeneracional de regreso al norte de Estados Unidos y Canadá.
Puso una foto del ala rota en Facebook, y una amiga le envió un video tutorial paso a paso que mostraba cómo arreglarlo.
McCloskey dijo que no dudó.
youtube
Debido al trabajo que hago, no fue nada fácil ", dijo McCloskey, que es una bordadora maestra de oficio, trabajando principalmente para películas independientes a través de su compañía, Faden Design Studios.
Sacó las herramientas que necesitaba: pinzas, tijeras pequeñas, pegamento, un colgador de alambre, una toalla y talco en polvo. También tenía un ala de repuesto de una mariposa que había muerto días antes. Ella había mantenido la mariposa pensando que era hermosa y que podría mostrarla en una caja de sombra en su pared. Pero en vez de eso, dijo que encontró un mejor uso para ello.
Un monarca migrante -que puede vivir varios meses- no tiene nervios en las alas, por lo que no le preocupaba dañarlo. Como se indica en el video, inmovilizó la mariposa colocando un colgador de alambre sobre su cuerpo, luego cuidadosamente cortó el ala destrozada y pegó el ala de reemplazo sobre lo que quedaba del ala lesionada. Ella esperó a que el pegamento se secara, luego roció una pequeña cantidad de talco en polvo sobre las alas para evitar que se pegaran entre sí debido a cualquier pegamento que no estuviera completamente seco.
Todo tomó 10 minutos.
"Tienes que asegurarte de que el ala donante tenga ataques", dijo. "Se superpone por menos de un milímetro, y usé la mínima cantidad de pegamento. Es una cantidad tan escasa de pegamento ".
WIP Word: crying / cry
“Whoa, hey, it’s okay Petey, breathe for me okay?” He can hear, just barely over his sobs, that Tony is pacing, can hear that his breathing is just a bit too fast, and Peter feels awful for freaking him out, but just can’t stop crying.
20 groovy movies turning 20 in 2017, baby
It’s hard to believe, but a full 20 years has passed since everyone in the world began quoting Austin Powers. Yeah, baby. Yeah.
It’s always fun to re-watch movies you grew up with. You can poke fun at fashion trends that have not aged well (metallic lipliner, anyone?) and technology that was once considered cutting edge. Or if you just want to yell at the screen because there was plenty of room on that floating door, Rose.
SEE ALSO: Almost 20 years later, ‘Titanic’ gets a retro remake
If you’re ready admit that you’re officially old, watch these movies that premiered in 1997, a time when women shaving their heads was noteworthy.
3. Men in Black
Probably Ironhusbands, Stucky, and Interwebs (Peter x Ned)! Though I love their platonic friendships as well!
