While looking into Belgian folk dress, I stumbled on a unique trend from the Belle Èpoque; “laitières” or milk maids. Farm girls were photographed standing next to their dog carts, holding a milk jug. The hype was so real, many photographs were staged as well. The same girl can be from Antwerp, Bruges or Brussels. Alternatively, a whole series was photographed with the girls leaving the farm, serving milk and being controlled by the local law enforcement (champetter). Possibly the girls can be seen receiving a fine for diluting the milk with water. Some girls aren’t even outside, but rather in front of a backdrop.

Some things you only learn or realize by spending an idiotic amount of time with it. I was actually just interested in the coifs until my mental database crashed over Bruges/Brussels.

61. Milkmaid Claw Lady

As I said (or rather wrote) before, the character of claw lady started appearing more regularly. I decided to draw her every month (if I could), thought it would a great idea. And that March, I put her in my take on Johannes Vermeer's 'The Milkmaid', with her as a main character.

I'm sorry for this. This is the artwork that's strong in the 'disappointment' factor. Despite being an interesting, funny and ambitious concept, it's obliterated by multitude of flaws, bad elements, and questionable design choices. If anyone bashed this piece, they'd be correct. However, this rendition might be considered a candidate for a guilty pleasure of mine.

It's one my underrated renditions, like how it turned out.
