2024: A Perfume Odyssey
Tumblr media
For anyone who might possibly be reading this, it's not entirely accurate of me to say that my fragrance journey began in 2024. It really began the previous year through a combination of curiosity and boredom, and had its origins in my last trip to France, which was in 2017.
I went with 2024 because in March I took my first trip abroad since France, this time to Italy, and I was positively inundated with fragrance during the two weeks I spent there. Milan was the city of oud and other opulent odors, while Venice, Florence and Rome strayed more into floral and fruity territory, but all throughout I was delighted by the world of scents (and flavors) I had so newly (re)discovered.
After returning home, I flipped through my "library" of fragrances and found something lacking. For me, trying out a scent is like selecting an accessory to go with an outfit, or being briefly transported to a different dimension accessed by sense memory. I'd acquired a few of each over the years--notably Frédéric Malle Outrageous in travel size and Tokyomilk Everything & Nothing in full size--but most of the samples I'd ordered through the mail fell short of what I wanted them to be.
Full disclosure: my initial buying choices last year may have been influenced by an ASMRtist on YouTube and a movie star with a mission to create "clean" unisex fragrances. The results were entertaining if not as satisfying as I'd hoped. English-born Penhaligon's yielded some fun origin stories like Hammam Bouquet (Oscar Wilde's fragrance of choice apparently) and Blenheim Bouquet (Winston Churchill's), but few felt like something I would actually want to wear more than once or twice. I'm not drawn to most stronger scents like vanilla or patchouli, and I tend to be selective with florals or anything that smells like it came out of a magazine ad.
In Italy I smelled many things, including Véronique Gabai and Goutal Paris and Diptyche and Santa Maria Novella (referenced in the latest Ripley series on Netflix), but the only fragrance I brought home was VG Sexy Garrigue, which to me smells like being gently submerged in a honey bath on a sunlit afternoon. It carries just a whisper of oud, reminding me of the city where I found it, Milan, without feeling drowned by it. A transportive scent par excellence that also serves perfectly well as an accessory.
In contrast, there's D.S. & Durga. I'd become aware of this niche New York-based boutique fragrance power couple after being gifted a Spirit Lamp-scented candle a few years ago, but it wasn't until I'd returned from Italy that I finally took the plunge and ordered some samples from them.
I started with a four-pack comprised of I Don't Know What, Cowboy Grass, Sweet Do Nothing, and Amber Kiso. Based on the many reviews I'd read, these were some of the OGs mixed with more recent additions, but nothing prepared me for what I would experience upon spraying each for the first time.
(On second thought, I wouldn't say I was entirely unprepared. I'd been inhaling Spirit Lamp for a while after all--a delicious milky-sweet delicacy with underlying hints of metal and musk--and it has been designated the "sex candle" in our household 🤭).
I Don't Know What (a literal English translation of je ne sais quoi) is more or less as described: a woodsy framework meant to be layered and built upon, or otherwise lending a subtle glow to one's natural body scent. I found that it layered well with one of the fragrances I'd sampled last year, and I will likely add them both to my wishlist.
Cowboy Grass was a surprise. Not as transportive as I'd been led to believe (whoever is behind the marketing team at DS&D is a genius), but it grew on me as it revealed notes both leathery and sweet, like a warm breeze wafting through an open-air market in the desert. OK, so maybe that last sentence reveals it to be more transportive than my initial impression made it out to be. It doesn't evoke either cowboys or grass in my mind, but I could picture someone like Curt Wild wearing it, which makes it even more appealing to me.
Amber Kiso, on the other hand, was deeply transportive. I tried it for the first time right before settling into a long meditation session and felt like I'd been whisked away to a holy forest, or possibly a monastery in the Himalayas. A bit too strong in the amber department to wear regularly, but I will be bringing it out whenever I want to experience it just for myself and be transported again.
Sweet Do Nothing was as advertised, heavy on the orange blossom and evoking a casual summery spirit. There are certain true floral scents that I will tolerate, orange blossom and rose among them, and I will likely continue to spritz this one on through the summer without feeling a need to buy more.
In summary, D.S. & Durga is the most varied adventure in fragrancy I've had yet, and it's going to be a struggle to prevent myself from ordering yet more samples from them this year. 😩 Which brings me to my final confession: I caved in to a promotional deal with FragranceNet.com this week.
It wasn't entirely out of the blue because I'd been longing after a couple of Goutal Paris fragrances sampled in Italy, and I was thrilled to find a travel-sized Eau d'Hadrien for a very affordable price. I justified the rest of my purchases as either birthday gifts (Tea Rose for the mom and Burberry for the fiancé) or low-stakes forays into other realms of scent I hadn't experienced before.
I think I've amassed enough of a collection at this point to satisfy this particular itch for the rest of the season at least--Eau d'Hadrien especially was made for the heat of summer, with its ginger-sharp edges and sweet heart that could fit the likes of Arthur Stuart--but I don't believe it's the last time I will be waxing lyrical about olfactory matters, nor do I want it to be. 💋

Modern AU — Calla Lefford
GENERAL INFORMATION
NAME: Calla Lefford
AGE: Thirty (Born November 16th, 1993)
BORN IN: London, England
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Has a house in London, England, an apartment in Oslo, Norway, and a loft/studio in New York City.
OCCUPATION: Founder of a jewelry brand and owner of several high-end boutiques
ETHNICITY: White (English)
BACKGROUND
The Leffords are cousins to the English royal family, and as such they grew up with a certain degree of scrutiny and in the public eye, though nowhere near what their cousins endured as royals.
Calla never adhered too closely to the rules her parents set up for her, but she didn't outright break them, since she wished to continue to go through life with the money and the privilege that came with playing her part as a Lefford.
At the boarding school, Calla was known as a capricious and headstrong girl, someone who stuck closely to her clique, and as a bit of a flirt too. During her last year, there was a scandal with one of her ex-boyfriends, and leaked some intimate pictures of her. There was initial slut-shaming in the situation, but ultimately Calla managed to come on top of the situation after a few months, pushing for the tides to turn and for people to see her ex for the misogynistic pervert he was. Calla not only managed to get him expelled from the academy, but she set a precedent within the school's bounds to recognize digital violence and ensure there are consequences for those who violate sexual intimacy by distributing personal, intimate pictures or videos.
After graduation, Calla moved to New York City to study Fine Arts with a focus on jewelry. Some of her pieces were featured on the runway during New York Fashion Week in 2015 and that was when she began to gain some recognition.
Calla currently has six high-end boutiques across the world. Her first one was opened in 2016 in New York City, her second in London in 2017, her third one in Milan in 2019, her fourth in Dubai in 2021, her fifth in Tokyo in 2022, and her sixth was just opened in Paris in the spring of 2024.
Calla has consistently worked for the past years to design exquisite pieces of jewelry that have been featured in global runway shows, or have been worn by celebrities, royals, and socialites in their public appearances.
RELATIONSHIP HISTORY
There have been ex-boyfriends in the past, though none worthy of note.
Calla is currently in a relationship with Aleksander Karstark, whom she met after attending one of his fights. That day, Calla sat on the first row, catching Alek's eye, and the two chatted afterward. Sparks flew, and they began dating after that. They have been together for a couple of years now and are in a committed, happy relationship.

among the roster of major designers Jean Paul Gaultier is notable for his concerted adoption and celebration of queer aesthetics from placing men in skirts in 1985 to repeatedly drawing on the homoerotic motif of the Genet-esque muscly. The State of American Fashion
Tumblr media
(DISCLAIMER: This article was originally published 1/11/21 on Medium.com, prior to the creation of venustadt.com. As such, my opinions may or may not have altered since the text below was originally written. This article has been re-published here to track my growth as a writer.)
Amid the final days of terrible 2020, there was a row on Twitter about the value of well-known American fashion brand Michael Kors.
“Someone posted a MK purse for Christmas talking about shes spoiled,” Twitter user @Lanazattitude posted Christmas Day. “1st of all MK been played out and thats not being spoiled.”
The lone tweet received around 1,000 replies and over 9,000 quote tweets, sparking a Black Twitter debate about luxury fashion and elitism. But no matter one’s personal opinions on Michael Kors, it is easy to see how quickly people are to undervalue American fashion brands compared to foreign titans like Chanel, Dior, or Balenciaga, to name a few.
The New York fashion scene has never enjoyed the grandeur of its sister fashion hubs London, Milan, or Paris. Many believe that this is due to New York’s lack of large heritage brands. According to former Wall Street Journal fashion and style columnist Christina Binkley, European fashion brands have historical roots in the luxury business due to their origins as artisanal houses. For example, the current French luxury industry owes much to King Louis XIV, who supported French luxury systems until his death in 1715, 61 years before the United States was founded.
This isn’t to say that the U.S. lacks a fashion heritage altogether. Since New York first established itself as a major international fashion force at the 1973 Battle of Versailles fashion show, the American fashion identity has been characterized by its free-spiritedness, prioritizing casual-chic practicality and comfort.
“Americans have a tendency to dress toward the middle,” Deirdre Clemente, fashion historian and curator, told Fashionista’s Maria Bobilo in 2017. “Starting at about the 1930s, dressing like you had money became uncool.”
This American way of “dressing towards the middle” helped make brands like Halston, Donna Karan, and Ralph Lauren influential. This free-spirited attitude can still be seen in American fashion brands today with the rise of athleisure, activewear, and streetwear, which are becoming increasingly popular among international markets. In particular, streetwear has become a powerful force within the industry, as seen with the appointment of Off-White founder Virgil Abloh to artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear in 2018 within the collections of luxury brands like Céline. Brands like Supreme have transformed the way consumers view luxury, reflecting a “bottom-up” trickle of influence in which consumers dictate trends rather than celebrities or traditional fashion industry authorities.
Still, it occasionally feels as if America’s fashion industry is on shaky ground. Even before the pandemic, which forced designers to move shows online or cancel altogether, New York Fashion Week had been labeled a relic that no longer aligned with the way Americans purchased clothing. As fashion trends came and went due to the influence of fast fashion, designers were drained creatively because of the excessive amount of collections produced each year. Foreign buyers and magazine editors often considered skipping New York to avoid the resulting tedious collection from overworked designers.
The ongoing crisis has only made things more uncertain. While stores like Neiman Marcus and J. C. Penney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, other brands were forced to contact suppliers to cancel orders, creating financial uncertainty among overseas garment workers. But while specific categories have suffered because of government-mandated lockdowns, others — namely streetwear and athleisure — have only grown stronger. Though the money spent by Americans on clothing has steadily declined since 2018, online sales of leggings, hoodies, and sweatpants have boomed since March, according to Quartz.
Like any other industry, American fashion exists in a constant flux state due to internal and external forces. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the fashion industry must brace itself for more inevitable changes and perhaps some much-needed evolution. Perhaps Business of Fashion’s Lauren Sherman said it best in 2019:
“…let’s stop pushing an outmoded model of what an American fashion model should look like and embrace the entrepreneurial, outside spirit at the heart of Americanness, inspiring a new generation to shake things up.”

Beni x Frama | Terrain rug collection
Tumblr media
Could there be any better news than two of your favourite brands teaming up and presenting their collaboration at Maison Rocher during Paris Design week , where you happen to be at that time! Frama is a long time favourite of mine that you have seen writing me about on many different occasions on the blog Ever since my first visit at the Frama store and the home of founder Niels Strøyer Christophersen in 2017, have a look here. I have been following and admiring the brand on their way to the succes. The beautiful and authentic Beni Rugs I got to know at Milan design week, after discovering Colin King was their new artistic director and launched a first collection, with Athena Calderone: Broken Symmetry At one of the most memorable Alcova events I finally got to meet and see the beautiful installation by Beni Rugs which is still on my mind. A must see if you ask me: Spoken lines by Colin King for Beni Rugs at Alcova 2022
Tumblr media
Terrain
Terrain is a limited collection of all-natural, undyed, flat woven rugs that take their colors directly from the wool of sheared sheep. The flat-woven Moroccan rugs pay homage to the unadorned beauty of wool and landscape, and present the first collaboration between FRAMA and Beni. Designed by nature over all else, each of the three colorways offered – Soil, Sand, and Salt – are made up entirely of undyed light, medium, and dark wools taken directly from high Atlas Mountain sheep. An homage to Moroccan craft and natural wool, the pure, undyed nature of the fibers encourage customers to see the sheep before the shear. Offering a relaxed texture, as well as a sturdiness and strength,Terrain emphasizes a humble, honest construction in timeless neutral shades of the earth. See more of Paris Design week and Maison & Objet at my Paris Design week 24 Instagram highlight

RACISM IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY
While the absence of Black, and other people of colour and cultures in boardrooms and on runways today is usually pointed as evidence of racism it goes much deeper and had become so normalised and expected that it is rarely consciously perceived.
The exclusivity of alternative races and culture is an issue that has being ongoing for too long, through the years we have become more inclusive, however, this is not enough. Everyone deserves to feel included and seen by the fashion industry, the lack of representation throughout the industry, from the high street advertisements to Fashion Week catwalks. People of colour and alternative cultures have the human right to find clothing that accommodates their religion and beliefs.
The lack of diversity in runways and campaigns is a huge issue due to fashion runways and major advertising campaigns historically featuring predominantly white colours, with a lack of representation for people of colour. London, Paris, Milan and New York Fashion Weeks have been criticised for years for casting predominately white models to walk the catwalks, which has reinforced the already narrow beauty standards. However, even when non-white models have been used, they are sometimes portrayed in ways that stereotype their ethnicity, for example, styling them in overly ethnic costumes. Other ways they are excluded is when brands cast people of colour to check a box to look inclusive rather than being genuinely diverse. Commonly this is where the same few models are used repeatedly without widening the opportunities for other models of colour with modelling potential.
Many fashion brands and fashion houses have been accused of cultural appropriation, which means using certain elements from cultures and disregarding the meaning and traditional uses of the element. In most cultures, traditional dress commonly have symbols, patterns, and clothing styles that are symbolic to their culture/religion and using these as a "fashion statement" in their collections can disrespect their cultural significance. Examples of cultural appropriation: Gucci, the brand have faced a lot of backlash over their products. The first was released in February of 2019, it was a wool turtleneck sweater that featured a mouth cut-out with red panels that look like lips. The immediate backlash from this sparked for the resemblance to blackface caricatures. Gucci shortly after posted an apology on twitter and removed the sweater from their site. More backlash came a few months after the last, as the retailer Nordstrom listed the Indy Full Turban on their website, which was actually spotted for the first time on the Gucci AW19 runway. The Sikh Coalition tweeted that "The turban is not just an accessory to monetise. It's a religious article of faith that millions of Sikhs view as sacred. Many find thus cultural appropriation inappropriate since those wearing the turban just for fashion will not appreciate its deep religious significance", after this the item was then removed from the website, as well as, apologising ti the Sikh community. Marc Jacobs was also called out for styling white models with dreadlocks for his Spring 2017 show.

the Loewe Handbags model was spotted running errands
The lug sole boot is another must have item of footwear to Loewe Bags wear everywhere this fall. Hadid wore a pair of off duty lug sole boots from Prada almost every day last Milan Fashion Week, sporting them with everything from a knit dress to a low rise skirt. The ever present sun has a significant influence on the city's fashion, of course.
While plenty of celebrities have changed up their style by looking to designers' archives, Ratajkowski reached for a label that isn't especially trendy and hasn't saturated the market. Aside from a strappy John Galliano newspaper print dress that she chose for an event during New York Fashion Week a style that was famously also worn by Carrie Bradshaw Ratajkowski's vintage choices are more pared back. Photos from the week serve as the perfect fashionable antidote to all those vacation snaps filling up your Instagram.
Like a classic denim shirt, but with a twist, a denim blouse is perfect for those with a more feminine approach to dressing. This one from Veronica Beard features puff sleeves and smocked elbows like a modern day cowgirl. Pair the blouse with these Zimmermann wide leg jeans as seen on this stylish street styler.
Instead, it generates a rather cool, laid back style statement, especially when worn sans blazer or suit jacket. trendsetters' penchant for effortlessly mixing high and low. When the crisp weather rolls in, it feels natural to slip into a suede fringe jacket or step into a sturdy cowboy boot.
There seems to be one wardrobe staple that almost every celebrity and editor is getting behind this fall season the suit vest. Jenner included, the Loewe Handbags model was spotted running errands in The Frankie Shop's beige Gelso' waistcoat. She didn't live entirely in dresses, however.
A neo bohemian fashion renaissance has commenced thanks to a crop of designers who have made the style their signature, from Johanna Ortiz and Zimmermann to Etro and Isabel Marant. The one It item these designers and many others are standing behind this fall, you might ask. A wish list worthy Western boot.
This street style lot has you covered. A pair of hot pink leather pants. A look back at fall street style from 2017 forward shows that cold weather essentials, from sweaters to shearlings, remain the same no matter where you are. "Everyone is requesting Loewe Handbags Outlet vintage," says Alexis Novak, founder of Tab Vintage, of the sharp increase in demand for vintage pieces from celebs and us plebeians this summer. As vintage mania has ticked up, Tab Vintage, which is based in LA, has become a reliable go to for celebs hunting down the most celebrated runway pieces from the past. Stalwart designers for Tab include Jean Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford's Gucci, Azzedine Ala.a, and '90s Versace.
