You said you love a good fashion doc- do you have any more to recommend?
Designers and tastemakers
Very Ralph (2019). The preeminent American designer of our time, one of the very few who can stand toe to toe with the titans of Paris and Milan. To call Ralph Lauren's work "sportswear" is to call the Sistine Chapel "kind of a big painting".
Halston (2019). Speaking of going head to head with Paris, Halston did it first. Skip Ultrasuede-- this is a much better doc about the king of American 70s disco glam.
McQueen (2018). When people talk about fashion as an art form, chances are they're thinking of Alexander McQueen. Worth watching for the pulse-pounding runway shows alone.
Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist (2018). Obviously you already know about this one, but it's gotta go on any comprehensive list. Without Vivienne Westwood, punk would have been nothing but a handful of noisy assholes.
Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel (2011). My icon, my north star, my personal hero. The empress of taste and high priestess of personal style. Watch this doc whenever you need encouragement to do and wear whatever the hell you want.
The Gospel According to André (2017). Diana Vreeland's protegé and a godfather of style in his own right. If it happened in fashion in the last fifty years, André Leon Talley was there for it.
Lagerfeld Confidential (2007). I have a high tolerance for difficult and unpleasant people as long as I like their work. Your mileage may vary, but Karl Lagerfeld's immaculate, relentless taste cannot be denied.
Institutions and events
The First Monday in May (2016). Witness all the hustle, bustle, savvy, and stress that goes into planning the Met gala!
The September Issue (2009). Same as the above, but for the famous September issue of Vogue. Watch this to learn who Grace Coddington is.
Dior and I (2014). How do haute couture collections get made? In 8 weeks from start to finish, I guess, if you're Raf Simons during his first season at the House of Dior. A documentary and a thriller.
Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's (2013). No matter what other retailers might want you to think, Bergdorf Goodman is the last great department store. A portrait, already halfway to a time capsule, of what luxury shopping used to be.
Peripheral, but may be of interest
Nose (2021). The passionate, delicate art of perfume creation for the House of Dior. The French landscapes where they source their materials will make you swoon.
Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story (2017). As the makeup artist to pretty much every single icon of the 80s and 90s, Kevyn Aucoin invented the image of that era as much as any designer.
Fabergé: A Life of Its Own (2014). Come for the dazzling jewels and sumptuous objets d'art; stay to find out how this illustrious name ended up on hair care products in the 70s.
Crazy About Tiffany's (2016). Another luxury jeweler whose name alone is the stuff dreams are made on.
Bill Cunningham New York (2010). The original street style photographer, since before "street style" was even a thing. A love letter to curiosity, and a testament to the power of taking an interest in the world around us.
Still on my watchlist
Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams (2020). Directed by Luca Guadagnino, which is enough to put this Ferragamo doc at the top of my list.
Advanced Style (2014). Portraits of seven women aged 62-95 with truly fab personal style. Top Letterboxd review is seething about how out of touch they are with the real world, which means I am probably gonna love it.
Suited (2016). A study of gender through clothing in modern culture.
Dries (2017). A year-- and four collections-- in the life of Dries Van Noten, who, interestingly, doesn't see the point of clothes that people can't buy to wear, and so does not do couture.
Yellow is Forbidden (2018). This doc about Guo Pei appears to use her career as a framework to understand the gatekeeping of global culture by the West. Dope as hell, if it can pull it off.
American Style (2019). The political, social, and economic history of America through its fashion. Another one that could be really awesome if done with insight and panache.
Quant (2021). She may share the credit for inventing the miniskirt with two other people, but it cannot be argued that Mary Quant invented 1960s Swinging London. And for that we say thank you Dame Mary.
#fashion#documentaries#film#this made me realize how broad of a category i consider fashion to be#joan didion? art forgery? the history of scotch? this too is style#nearly tossed a studio 54 doc on this list before remembering that it wasn't all that good#forthegothicheroine#questions queries quandaries

Modern AU — Calla Lefford
GENERAL INFORMATION
NAME: Calla Lefford
AGE: Thirty (Born November 16th, 1993)
BORN IN: London, England
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Has a house in London, England, an apartment in Oslo, Norway, and a loft/studio in New York City.
OCCUPATION: Founder of a jewelry brand and owner of several high-end boutiques
ETHNICITY: White (English)
BACKGROUND
The Leffords are cousins to the English royal family, and as such they grew up with a certain degree of scrutiny and in the public eye, though nowhere near what their cousins endured as royals.
Calla never adhered too closely to the rules her parents set up for her, but she didn't outright break them, since she wished to continue to go through life with the money and the privilege that came with playing her part as a Lefford.
At the boarding school, Calla was known as a capricious and headstrong girl, someone who stuck closely to her clique, and as a bit of a flirt too. During her last year, there was a scandal with one of her ex-boyfriends, and leaked some intimate pictures of her. There was initial slut-shaming in the situation, but ultimately Calla managed to come on top of the situation after a few months, pushing for the tides to turn and for people to see her ex for the misogynistic pervert he was. Calla not only managed to get him expelled from the academy, but she set a precedent within the school's bounds to recognize digital violence and ensure there are consequences for those who violate sexual intimacy by distributing personal, intimate pictures or videos.
After graduation, Calla moved to New York City to study Fine Arts with a focus on jewelry. Some of her pieces were featured on the runway during New York Fashion Week in 2015 and that was when she began to gain some recognition.
Calla currently has six high-end boutiques across the world. Her first one was opened in 2016 in New York City, her second in London in 2017, her third one in Milan in 2019, her fourth in Dubai in 2021, her fifth in Tokyo in 2022, and her sixth was just opened in Paris in the spring of 2024.
Calla has consistently worked for the past years to design exquisite pieces of jewelry that have been featured in global runway shows, or have been worn by celebrities, royals, and socialites in their public appearances.
RELATIONSHIP HISTORY
There have been ex-boyfriends in the past, though none worthy of note.
Calla is currently in a relationship with Aleksander Karstark, whom she met after attending one of his fights. That day, Calla sat on the first row, catching Alek's eye, and the two chatted afterward. Sparks flew, and they began dating after that. They have been together for a couple of years now and are in a committed, happy relationship.

Brands such as Simone Rocha, Rachel Comey and Vivienna Westwood are starting to include many more older models to showcase their work this is making the fashion world more diverse and as the seasons go on their seems to be more inclusivity each time.
AlexandraKutas
Hailing from Ukraine, Alexandra Kutas claimed the title of the world’s first runway model in a wheelchair as well as Ukraine’s first fashion model with a disability. Alexandra modelled on the runway during Ukraine Fashion Week in 2015 and a couple of months later unveiled a photography exhibition called “Break Your Chains” alongside photographer Andrei Sarymsakov in an effort to break down society’s stereotypes and negative perceptions of people with disabilities.

Greater diversity within the fashion community opened up a space to celebrate all beauty and gave a platform for people with disabilities to be more visible. As a result we are seeing more people with disabilities making appearances on runways, on the cover of magazines, in fashion ads and beauty campaigns.
Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture spring/summer 1998

Over the years he has had many collaborations and with friend and muse Tanel Bedrossiantz to various striking ends. In his spring summer 1998 Age of Enlightenment influenced couture show, Bedrossiantz apps rated in a tightly corseted ruffled gown over a white shirt and tie an image so iconic it was included in the catalogue for vogues 2019 camp.

Beni x Frama | Terrain rug collection
Could there be any better news than two of your favourite brands teaming up and presenting their collaboration at Maison Rocher during Paris Design week , where you happen to be at that time! Frama is a long time favourite of mine that you have seen writing me about on many different occasions on the blog Ever since my first visit at the Frama store and the home of founder Niels Strøyer Christophersen in 2017, have a look here. I have been following and admiring the brand on their way to the succes. The beautiful and authentic Beni Rugs I got to know at Milan design week, after discovering Colin King was their new artistic director and launched a first collection, with Athena Calderone: Broken Symmetry At one of the most memorable Alcova events I finally got to meet and see the beautiful installation by Beni Rugs which is still on my mind. A must see if you ask me: Spoken lines by Colin King for Beni Rugs at Alcova 2022
Terrain
Terrain is a limited collection of all-natural, undyed, flat woven rugs that take their colors directly from the wool of sheared sheep. The flat-woven Moroccan rugs pay homage to the unadorned beauty of wool and landscape, and present the first collaboration between FRAMA and Beni. Designed by nature over all else, each of the three colorways offered – Soil, Sand, and Salt – are made up entirely of undyed light, medium, and dark wools taken directly from high Atlas Mountain sheep. An homage to Moroccan craft and natural wool, the pure, undyed nature of the fibers encourage customers to see the sheep before the shear. Offering a relaxed texture, as well as a sturdiness and strength,Terrain emphasizes a humble, honest construction in timeless neutral shades of the earth. RACISM IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY
While the absence of Black, and other people of colour and cultures in boardrooms and on runways today is usually pointed as evidence of racism it goes much deeper and had become so normalised and expected that it is rarely consciously perceived.
The exclusivity of alternative races and culture is an issue that has being ongoing for too long, through the years we have become more inclusive, however, this is not enough. Everyone deserves to feel included and seen by the fashion industry, the lack of representation throughout the industry, from the high street advertisements to Fashion Week catwalks. People of colour and alternative cultures have the human right to find clothing that accommodates their religion and beliefs.
The lack of diversity in runways and campaigns is a huge issue due to fashion runways and major advertising campaigns historically featuring predominantly white colours, with a lack of representation for people of colour. London, Paris, Milan and New York Fashion Weeks have been criticised for years for casting predominately white models to walk the catwalks, which has reinforced the already narrow beauty standards. However, even when non-white models have been used, they are sometimes portrayed in ways that stereotype their ethnicity, for example, styling them in overly ethnic costumes. Other ways they are excluded is when brands cast people of colour to check a box to look inclusive rather than being genuinely diverse. Commonly this is where the same few models are used repeatedly without widening the opportunities for other models of colour with modelling potential.
Many fashion brands and fashion houses have been accused of cultural appropriation, which means using certain elements from cultures and disregarding the meaning and traditional uses of the element. In most cultures, traditional dress commonly have symbols, patterns, and clothing styles that are symbolic to their culture/religion and using these as a "fashion statement" in their collections can disrespect their cultural significance. Examples of cultural appropriation: Gucci, the brand have faced a lot of backlash over their products. The first was released in February of 2019, it was a wool turtleneck sweater that featured a mouth cut-out with red panels that look like lips. The immediate backlash from this sparked for the resemblance to blackface caricatures. Gucci shortly after posted an apology on twitter and removed the sweater from their site. More backlash came a few months after the last, as the retailer Nordstrom listed the Indy Full Turban on their website, which was actually spotted for the first time on the Gucci AW19 runway. The Sikh Coalition tweeted that "The turban is not just an accessory to monetise. It's a religious article of faith that millions of Sikhs view as sacred. Many find thus cultural appropriation inappropriate since those wearing the turban just for fashion will not appreciate its deep religious significance", after this the item was then removed from the website, as well as, apologising ti the Sikh community. Marc Jacobs was also called out for styling white models with dreadlocks for his Spring 2017 show.
youtube
In this video 9 models of different races, cultures and sizes talk about how they feel about diversity in the modelling and fashion industry. They talk about the issues with makeup and hair stylists and the struggle they have to be included with their individual skin tones and hair types. They also explain how the industry can be toxic when it comes to their bodies and how most designers and brands don't cater to a wide variety of sizes. They believe that everyone in the industry has a responsibility to make a change and become more diverse and inclusive.
youtube
4 models talk about race in the modelling industry and the struggles they faced being in the industry regarding casting, makeup and hair styles. As well as, the obvious ignorance towards people of colour, they want to try and change the industry and create representation for the people who feel they are being excluded.
youtube
In this video, it shows the 10 most famous muslim models and explains how proud these models are to be able to represent the muslim community in the modelling and fashion industry. They believe that representing their Arabian culture is important, Ikram Abdi, is the UK's first hijab wearing model to be featured on the cover of Vogue, she says that her heritage and religious beliefs have influenced her career. She explains that being modest is very important as being modest is a major thing in the muslim religion, she wants to show that you can be modest and interested in fashion as the hijab itself represents beauty, along side of representing Islam. Bella and Gigi Hadid are more examples of muslim models and they say that they are very proud and lucky to be muslim and it is very important to them and their family.
youtube
This video shows how Rihanna produced the 'most inclusive and diverse fashion show' for her Savage X Fenty fashion show. The musician and entrepreneur, included models of all races, sizes, abilities and cultures. She is being praised for being inclusive and representing all people.

CHILDREN'S FASHION
Something that i want to explore further is the idea of including kidswear as part of my collection, growing up i would wear extrevagant sleeves and dresses, and so i wanted to include the idfea that there is no age limit to style. Therefore to be able to create designs that include this concept i wanted to do some research into childrens styles.

ss16 on both childrenswear and the adjusted for the adult wear I think this is really interesting and a great way to show style has no age.

I particularly love the vintage look of this collection I love how time is it is and how this can be adapted to adult fun I absolutely love the collars.
