WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 1 OF 3 Wednesday, March 1, 2023
"When feminist rhetoric is rooted in biases like racism, ableism, transmisogyny, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia, it automatically works against marginalized women and against any concept of solidarity. It's not enough to know that other women with different experiences exist; you must also understand that they have their own feminism formed by that experience. Whether it's an argument that women who wear the hijab must be 'saved' from it, or reproductive-justice arguments that paint having a disabled baby as the worst possible outcome, the reality is that feminism can be marginalizing. If a liberation movement's own representatives are engaging with each other oppressively, then what progress can the movement make without fixing that internal problem?" - Mikki Kendall, Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot

New #review #HoodFeminism by @karnythia #mikkikendall MOVE OVER, ROBIN DIANGELO! If you're looking to find a deeper connection in your #antiracist (#feminist) journey, then HOOD FEMINISM IS THE BOOK. Ms Kendall offers an in-depth looks at ALL the intersectional issues that feminism should be focusing on, through the lens of those who are most impacted by a lack of support. Reading this book will give you the impetus to start actively moving forward towards a more inclusive form of feminism. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. It is educational, insightful, and inspiring. Ms Kendall offers up vulnerable examples from her own life that highlight what she's speaking on, as well as giving practical info and examples of what this more inclusive feminism should look like. Plus, Ms Kendall doesn't hold back. She gets in your face with the facts because these issues are incredibly important but are still being overlooked. And we can't make progress until we help the least fortunate among us. Feminists, and especially us white ones, must move from performative allyship to being accomplices who actively divest from white supremacy. WE MUST LISTEN TO AND LEARN FROM the "Marginalized communities [that] have already developed strategies and solutions as they do their own internal work. Now mainstream feminism has to step up, has to get itself to a place where it spends more time offering resources and less time demanding validation." I will definitely need to reread this several times though as there is so much good information here that it's hard to absorb it all in just one read. I had so many highlights! . . . . . #goodreads #Amazon #kindle #Bookbub #StoryGraph #iheartbooks #readingisfundamental #book #readallthebooks #booklover #bookworm #bookwrym #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #read #reading #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks #readallthebooks #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #booksarelife https://www.instagram.com/p/CjA2ISasf70/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Feminism in the hood is for everyone, because everyone needs it.” . Only read the introduction so far, but I love her writing style and I vibe with “not being nice.” I have a feeling this book will hurt my feelings, but its also necessary if I don’t wanna be a “white feminist.” Which I don’t. (Author’s name got cut off in the pic, it’s #MikkiKendall aka @karnythia) . . . . #books #bookstagram #hoodfeminism #feminism #feminist https://www.instagram.com/p/CNLIJbzBuLY/?igshid=14q98fnmm4d1n

I read this book a while back but never posted a review for it. I read it on audio (which I would highly recommend as it’s narrated by the author) but I know it’s a book I’ll want to go back to and reference in the future so I got a physical copy of it too. If you want to learn about what the feminist movement actually is, what it should be, then read this book. If you are a white feminist, then you should definitely read this book. It was great. — #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookreview #feminism #hoodfeminism #feministliterature #mikkikendall #importantbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CDMe5KlAFvx/?igshid=rmkzzphs1xbe

#onyxeditions ✊🏾 Repost @onyxeditions ・・・ A reminder that every here & then you may have to do your Googles to check the source in order to ensure an authentic read or that appropriation hasn’t gone awry 👀 As they say “all skin folk ain’t kinfolk” and MANY books about #theBlackExperience with Black people on the cover AREN’T written by Black folk! ✅ #BadFatBlackGirl by #SesaliBowen (@badfatblackgirl) offers a new, inclusive feminism for the modern world. Weaving together searing personal essay and cultural commentary, Bowen interrogates sexism, fatphobia, and capitalism all within the context of race and hip-hop. Bad bitches: this one’s for you. ✅ ✅ #HoodFeminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot by #MikkiKendall (@karnythia)✅ In her searing collection of essays, Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement, arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women. Drawing on her own experiences with hunger, violence, and hypersexualization, along with incisive commentary on politics, pop culture, the stigma of mental health, and more, Hood Feminism delivers an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux.✅ 🚩🚩⛔️Bad and Boujee by Jennifer M. Buck🚩🚩⛔️ ⚠️Wipf and Stock Publishers confirmed today that it has initiated the removal and ceased distribution of Jennifer M. Buck’s book, Bad and Boujee: Toward a Trap Feminist Theology, after days of criticism directed at the book. ⚠️On April 13 and 14, several people on Twitter criticized the book, prompted by Luehmann’s Instagram account. Many Black women authors, academics, and theologians shared their perspective. 🚩🚩⛔️⛔️Some said that Buck, as a white woman, did not have the ability to write a theology that comes from Black women’s experience, and others have criticized the book’s content and aim — particularly Buck presenting her book as building an ethic already built by Black women over decades. People also made criticisms about racism and appropriation in publishing and academia. - Soujourners (@sojogram) 🚩⛔️ #badfatblackgirl #sesalibowen #hoodfeminism #mikkikendall #blackauthors #blackbookstores #blackbookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CcX3SjtLq3m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I'll be starting my buddy read with @myblackbookish_life for Hood Feminism by @karnythia tomorrow and I'm excited! I have the perfect bookmark for it too. I'm hoping to read some other nonfiction books on my shelf later in the year and feel that this is a great way to start. so happy to have finally read this. kendall’s writing is straightforward, accessible, and impolite. she states herself in the intro that ‘i’m a feminist. mostly. i’m an asshole. mostly’. and long gone are the days where people should be muting their voices to be polite. instead she perfectly explains how feminism at present is flawed and biased (unsurprisingly) in preferential treatment of white women. she explores how feminism disregards the needs of black, trans, and less abled women to list a few, and highlights how we should and need to do better. found the chapter ‘fear and feminism’ to be particularly interesting in thinking about ways in which white supremacy under trump has been motivated in reaction to obama’s presidency and the threat of a black man wielding power. it seems fitting to have finished this on the day of biden’s inauguration - here’s hoping for a better future for all. a must read for all white feminists. 4/5 ⭐️ #books #bookstagram #book #feminism #feminist #whitefeminism #hoodfeminism #mikkikendall #nonfiction #feministbooks #feministliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CKRoQFsl8_W/?igshid=ed8bet5i4dt6

Important takes from @aoc, @karnythia, @jessicavalenti and others on the dangerous attempts by some to ignore the contributions of leftist organizing - especially that of Black women and youth in the Midwest, rust belt, and southern states, blame the left for “alienating centrist voters” that barely existed anyway, and offer platitudes asking us all to “come together” with the people who have been baying for blood and cheering as peaceful protesters were beaten by cops. I don’t pretend to know how to heal this nation, but it certainly isn’t in turning the other cheek to a guy with a red hat, a gun, and a conviction that your existence is stealing something from him. Also, I live in hope that I’ll one day be voting for President Stacy Abrams. #nojusticenopeace #whitesupremacy #election #bidenharris #blacklivesmatter #trumpism #votehimout #election2020 #whitesupremacists #alexandriaocasiocortez #aoc #mikkikendall #jessicavalenti #intersectionalfeminism #stacyabrams #georgiavoters #flipgeorgiablue #fuckwhitesupremacy #greennewdeal #leftist https://www.instagram.com/p/CHQjbwZAFYQ/?igshid=f2gosls8fih4

BLACK HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 15 OF 15 Tuesday, February 28, 2023
"It's easy to blame the patriarchy, to rightfully point at the men who rape and hold them accountable. What's harder is to notice the women who sometimes passively direct rapists toward their victims by contributing to the hypersexualization of women of color under the guise of empowerment ... Feminist white women who think 'sexy Pocahontas' is an empowering look instead of lingering fetishization of the rape of a child. The same imagery they claim to find sexually empowering is rooted in the myth of white women's purity and every other woman's sexual availability." - Mikki Kendall, Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot

Hood Feminism Book Review
Hood Feminism Book Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello fellow readers,
The Lit Savant book club read Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall in April. I enjoyed reading this book. I felt like I walked away with way more information than I had prior to starting. But it was by no means an easy read. The statistics mentioned are harrowing and the anecdotes Kendall presents about her life and those who unjustly suffered are heartbreaking. For this…

It's easy to blame the patriarchy,to rightfully point at the men who rape and hold them accountable. What's harder is to notice the women who sometimes passively direct rapist toward their victims by contributing to the hypersexualitation of women of color under the guise is true and accurate, but it is also incomplete assessment of rape culture (Page 55) . . So bold and brutally honest, this book is opening my eyes about how feminism works in abroad (especially USA) but it also triggers some questions in the different race. Mikki Kendal explains the suffering to be a woman, not a white one, facing the potentional danger everywhere. She isn't only addressing why we need a safe environment for black women or the other like Asian women. Feminism is about empowering women without seeing their skin color . . Goodreads includes this book in its list to support #blacklivesmatter✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 and apparently I bought it a month ago. I can know further how bad the effect from weapon's ownership in USA and the other fact who makes women should be careful in every step. Mikki Kendall also enlightens my mind with her research and opinions . .
