Beatles Books as vaguely defined friends and relatives at a party you attend with a new crush, whose name you keep mispronouncing.
The longer you stay, the more trouble you have remembering what the occasion was.
The lights keep changing. Shortly after you arrived, your crush shrunk to the size of a mouse, and scurried away. You’re on your own.
The Beatles (Bob Spitz) greets you, an attractive silver fox who seems to be shunned by most of the others. You wonder why. It’s as easy to imagine him as a crying wreck as it is to imagine him on a golf course. Here, There, and Everywhere (Geoff Emerick) disrupts your musings by pulling tapes from his mouth. Seeing your discomfort, he stops and hands you a photograph of John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing into the same microphone. As he does, his pupils take on the shape of hearts. Someone called George announces his intent to poison him.
Anthology (The Beatles) saunters in, puts eight arms around you, and promises to tell you the whole story. They proceed to speak in tongues, and throw popcorn at you. Stu Sutcliffe jumps from a pendant around their neck, lands on the floor, and scurries after your crush.
“It’s always like this,” says Body Count (Francie Schwartz). “I assume you don’t want to listen to my story about a gifted woman who got locked up for depression? That’s fine, I can also talk about frottage, and a certain man’s curves.”
“Oh, stop it,” says John (Cynthia Lennon). She turns to you. “My advice is: Turn around and run as fast as you can.” She demonstrates what she means by disappearing, leaving behind a purse filled with cheerful letters and drawings of herself getting married and giving birth. Everything smells of olive oil. Francie spots Loving John (May Pang), and rushes to her, greedy for gossip. Loving John (May Pang) is everyone’s favorite, because she doesn’t really know anyone very well, but she knows how to make everyone feel comfortable by saying things that make sense in the moment.
Living the Beatles Legend: The Mal Evans Story (Ken Womack) ends up taking her home; they both live at The Fringes. Her home is a little further than his, which is just this side of Weird whereas she’s all the way in Montauk, but he’ll make sure she gets there safely.
To make up for the disappearance of your crush, Remember (Mike McCartney) cuts your hair. Each snip of the scissors slots a black-and-white picture into your field of vision. Windows in time blow noise and heat in your face, and visions of a screaming band that looks a bit like the young Beatles. Then there’s the quiet heat of summer, towels rippling on the line, and a drain pipe screwed to the wall of a house. He talks about childhood, and you’re almost there, but you never will be, because he won’t let you in. His more verbose twin, The Macs (Mike McCartney), recites letters his brother and John wrote from Hamburg, but you can barely understand what he says, because he stuffed a tissue into his mouth.
“It’s only a story,” says The Lyrics (Paul McCartney). “Pleased to meet you. I’m a storyteller myself.” He sings a love song. “I must have thought about these things when I wrote it,” he muses. “Interesting. What a mind, as Linda used to say.”
He tears a few pages from a diary he kept in Paris in 1961 and hands them to you without comment.
At this point, the party is dissolving. Crocheted furniture floats away and stretches.
“Am I too late?” Skywriting by Word of Mouth (John Lennon) squeezes himself out of the lowest drawer of an antique desk, where, judging from by his crinkly pajamas, he slept. “I’m in pieces. Mend me with glue.”
“I will, I will!” Tune In—All These Years, Vol I (Mark Lewisohn) yells ecstatically. “I’m so glad you could make it Sit down with me and celebrate the heritage of Liverpool.”
Skywriting drapes himself around Tune In, who starts purring and rutting against him.
“Excuse me?” It’s The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story (Vivek Tiwary), torero boots clicking on the invisible floor as he strides towards the couch. A spotlight follows him. “I’m managing this show, and I insist on expanding the scene.” Around them, a hotel room forms.
Skywriting lights a cigarette. “Join us in bed, Bri.”
“Yes,” moans Tune In. “I’m so lonely. I’m the oldest of a triplet, or so they say, but the other two haven’t been born yet.”
The Fifth Beatle sits down and observes the unhinged biography losing himself in the friction of rubbing against the shapeshifting Skywriting. Finally, things reach a conclusion.
“And so,” says The Fifth Beatle, “what partially was, finished.”
“Stop repeating lines from a bad movie, Brian," says Skywriting, "you’re better than that.”
As you try to plot ways to escape through the skylight, The McCartney Legacy, Vol 1 (Sinclair & Kozinn) slides out from under the bed, a broad-shouldered lady in a bright red dress. A half-hatched alien with long legs and sunglasses squirms between her breasts, and makes mouth percussion sounds.
“Gentlemen.” The McCartney Legacy retrieves a very, very long rosary from her pocket. “Is anyone interested in an exquisitely crafted, finely wrought chronology?”
At the sound of the word “chronology,” The Beatles (Hunter Davies) crashes through the ceiling.
“Don’t fall for it!” The Beatles snatches the vocalizing baby alien from The McCartney Legacy’s chest, and kills it by wringing its neck. “Time stopped in 1968. The only valid extension are my own salacious additions. Strictly off the record.”
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that,” says The Fifth Beatle.
You exchange a glance with Skywriting, who is plucking pieces of Tune In from his body like children snatch pieces of dough, and sticking them in his mouth.
A camera clicks.
“Excellent.”
The Eyes of the Storm (Paul McCartney) lowers the camera, and changes into a suntanned, gleaming likeness of George Harrison. Then he changes into a fish.
“Everyone looking at the pictures will think they know,” the fish says. “They’ll have no idea!”
The floor dissolves under you. You fall into a pool, just in time to save your crush from being sucked into the drain, and after a barely audible edit you find yourself back home, with no memories at all, the taste of chewing gum in your mouth, and wearing matching tops saying, I visited Fellini’s Satyricon, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt. (ETA: I can't believe I forgot about Dreaming the Beatles (Rob Sheffield). I guess I'll have to include him in the inevitable sequel to this...thing, as the +1 of John and Paul: A Love Story in Songs (Ian Leslie).)

Muscle Cars and American Culture: How They Shaped an Era - Mike Savage of New Canaan
The roaring engines, the thunderous exhausts, and the sheer power of muscle cars have left an indelible mark on American culture. These iconic automobiles, which emerged in the mid-20th century, not only revolutionized the automotive industry but also became a symbol of freedom, individualism, and the American Dream. In this article, we delve into how muscle cars shaped an era and continue to influence American culture.
Tumblr media
The Birth of Muscle Cars
The term "muscle car" was coined in the 1960s, a decade characterized by societal change, rebellion, and a thirst for speed. Muscle cars were a direct response to this cultural shift, born from the desire for powerful, high-performance vehicles that could be driven on the street and raced on the track.
Horsepower and Speed
At the heart of every muscle car was an engine built for speed and power. Vehicles like the Pontiac GTO, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Charger were equipped with V8 engines that produced staggering amounts of horsepower. These cars were built to go fast, with acceleration that could take your breath away.
The obsession with speed extended to drag racing, a popular pastime during the era. Muscle car enthusiasts flocked to drag strips to witness the raw power of these machines, and many even raced their own cars, showcasing the thrill of speed to a wider audience.
Freedom and Individualism
Muscle cars became a symbol of personal freedom and individualism. Owning a muscle car was not just about transportation; it was about making a statement. The open road beckoned, and muscle cars provided the means to answer that call. They represented the idea that anyone could aspire to own a piece of the American Dream and experience the exhilaration of the open highway.
Iconic Designs and Features
Muscle cars were more than just powerful machines; they were works of art. Their bold, distinctive designs and features set them apart from ordinary cars. Hood scoops, racing stripes, and aggressive front grilles became signature elements of muscle car styling. These cars were designed to be noticed, to make a statement wherever they went.
Cultural Impact
Tumblr media
Muscle cars didn't just influence the automotive industry; they left an indelible mark on popular culture. They appeared in movies, television shows, and music, solidifying their status as cultural icons. The Ford Mustang, for example, made a memorable appearance in the classic film "Bullitt," featuring a legendary car chase scene that remains one of cinema's most iconic moments.
Muscle cars also played a role in defining the music of the era. Rock 'n' roll and the rebellious spirit of the 1960s were a perfect match for the high-octane world of muscle cars. Songs like "Little Deuce Coupe" by The Beach Boys and "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett celebrated the love affair between Americans and their muscle cars.
Legacy and Evolution
While the heyday of muscle cars was the 1960s and 1970s, their legacy lives on. Modern muscle cars, such as the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Challenger, continue to captivate enthusiasts with their blend of nostalgic design and cutting-edge technology. These modern interpretations pay homage to their predecessors while meeting the demands of contemporary performance and safety standards.
The era of muscle cars was a time when speed, power, and individualism reigned supreme. These iconic vehicles became more than just modes of transportation; they became symbols of freedom, rebellion, and the pursuit of the American Dream. Their influence extended far beyond the automotive world, shaping popular culture and leaving an enduring legacy.
Today, muscle cars continue to capture the hearts of enthusiasts, reminding us of a time when the open road beckoned and the roar of a V8 engine represented the promise of adventure and excitement. The cultural impact of muscle cars endures, a testament to the enduring appeal of speed, power, and the American spirit.
Tumblr media
The 21st century witnessed a revival of muscle cars, blending nostalgic designs with modern technology. Models like the Ford Mustang GT and the Chevrolet Camaro SS pay homage to their predecessors while delivering cutting-edge performance. Mike Savage, as a passionate advocate for muscle cars from New Canaan, applauds this resurgence, as it ensures that the legacy he cherishes lives on, appealing to both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Because Your Hands are Yours
A moment in the Scotland safehouse. Jon contemplates the essence of hands.
Cw: Scar description. A trip down memory lane refering to the horrors of this podcast. Non sexual intimacy.
Jon sat at the kitchen table looking at his hands. It was something he started doing when his mind drifted off ever since the coma. His hand were rough and thin. He could trace the harsh line with his eyes lingering on every blemish, every sharp edge, every scar that mapped a universe within them.
It was a meditative sort of exercise. Thinking back to where each change happened and what choices shaped his palms as they are today.
There was the faint line across his ring and little finger on his right hand. It was from a heavy door that slammed on them when he was ten. For a long time after his encounter with the web he refused to use door handles and resorted to all sorts of convoluted ways of opening doors until his fingers paid the price.
There were paper cuts scattered about his fingers from all the documents and cardboard boxes he handled throughout the years. Faded but for some reason still there, a mark of his position as the Archivist.
He then moved on to trace the circular dots Prentiss left him that extended past his hands to the rest of his body, an array of little holes long since closed but left as a memento of his first experience as an adult with the unending horrors in this world.
There was the very obvious burn mark on his right hand where his encounter with Jude and his own stupidity left the nerve endings ravaged and weakened and left the skin itself mottled with intense discoloration. This mark always fascinated him. He could always find new shapes in it and the feeling of tracing its ridges and grooves with his fingers was mesmerizing and alien each time.
There was the friction burn across both his palms from those awful moments gripping the chair to the point of bleeding while falling at Mike Crew's home, then being forced to use those same hands to dig his grave. Those were the scars he tried to skip over because even now they left him with the taste of the vertigo and dread with which they were created.
There were much fainter burn marks scattered across the back of his hands from the explosion at the wax museum. For some reason those did not remain as harsh as the one he got from the Desolation but he supposed that made sense. Their color on his skin reminded him more of birth marks than actual scars.
The were the two clean lines across his left little finger where he tried to cut it to no avail. They healed quickly but left a memento of his desparation. A reminder of his very obvious inhumanity.
Scattered but focused around his finger nails were the scratches from his hopeless digging in the coffin, while searching for Daisy. Those sometimes had mud caked around them which he would need to pick out even when no dirt was in the vicinity.
He sat there, his mind wandering as his fingers traced the marks and the ridges, following the changes in color and texture. He came back to himself noticing what he was doing and breathed deeply. It was always hard for him to stop this fixation when it started, to let go of his focused observation. Go through all of the memories associated with the scars. Like a zealous collector counting his precious hoard.
Suddenly another pair of hands came into view. Soft hands, large and pillowy and elegant in their movement. The only marks they adorned were the constellations of freckles that complemented their pale hue nicely.
The hands slowly approached his own and tenderly gathered them into their clasp. They were warm soothing, their texture so even and balanced it immediately pulled Jon's mind back into focus, grounding him gently.
Jon looked up blinking slowly. Martin was gazing down at him quietly, having come back from his walk.
"Hey" he said softly. His hands were tentative, unsure of what to do now that they had the object they aimed to grasp within them.
Jon looked back down his throat closing up for some reason. He began tracing lines between Martins freckles with his fingers, caressing them lightly. Martin made a humming sound. Jon took the hands and slowly raised them to bracket his own face. He leaned into their warmth. They were so so warm.
"Hi." he responded, sounding strangled to his own ears. For some reason the whole process took the feelings of the past months that he always kept buried inside and pulled them out to the surface of his being. He felt his eyes prickle and took another deep breath, closing them, still holding those lovely palms in his and resting them on his cheeks.
They stayed like that for a moment longer, Jon letting the wetness seep through his lashes and trickle down into Martin's palms.
Martin stood silent then slowly brought his hands up to gently knead Jon's temples. Jon's hands slid to hold Martin's wrists and let out a shaky sigh, the tension he didn't know he held bleeding out of his shoulders.
"That feels good." He whispered. He concentrated on the experience of Martin's fingertips, how right they felt, how free of burden. He stroked Martin's arms for a few seconds, or minutes, and then let out another sigh.
"Jon?" Martin asked "Are you feeling a little better?"
"Yes." He murmured. He looked up once more and through the haze of his tear filled eyes he gazed at his anchor, his home among the strange and the unsettling. "C'mere."
Martin leaned down while jon pulled him in and their lips met in an intensity that left all of their previous kisses in the dust. Jon dimly compared their lips like he did their hands and was so so glad he had the privilege to feel them both, to explore them and hold them close with no need for an excuse. It's been so long since he could do that with someone. With anyone. The touch was so new and good in comparison to all the awful touches of the past few years it took his breath away and he moaned quietly into Martin's mouth, deepening the kiss. Martin found his hands again and clasped them tightly, holding all of his scars and marks in his grasp, a promise to embrace and preserve.
The ghost of the kiss still lingered even after they pulled apart, and they kept their hands tightly connected as they moved to comfortably cuddle on the couch. Jon was engulfed in Martin's snug embrace and it felt like the most correct form of existence.
"Jon, I just. I just want to say that no matter what you think, your hands are lovely." Martin expressed. "They're yours and... and I love them for it."
The last part he said in a rushed tone. Jon's heart clenched. It was the first time the word 'love' was used between them. And it felt. Right. He looked up from where his head was pillowed on Martin's chest. Martin lookes nervous but didn't avert his heated gaze. Jon breathed deeply.
"I love you Martin. So much." Words he wanted to say for a while and now it felt there was no better time to begin saying them aloud. And continue saying them hence forth.
"Uh. Hah. God, I love you too Jon." Martin responded urgently and tightened his grip around Jon.
Jon smiled into Martin's jumper and vowed to himself to make sure Martin's hands will never become as marked as his. No matter what the future might bring.

Doing the nostalgia thing again.  Go figure, lol.  Anyway.  Today I’m lamenting the early departure of some shows that I watched once upon a time and there are so many.  Too many that (were) ended either right as they were getting good or just weren’t given a proper chance.  Oh what could have been.  Here are some of them, off the top of my head.  This is by no means a complete list because there have been just too many for me to remember.  Feel free to add your own.
I either follow actors/actresses that I have enjoyed in previous shows or get drawn in by the drama or fantasy or utter sci-fi-ness (lol) of it all.
Bunheads
"Bunheads" tells the fish-out-of-water story of Michelle Simms, a once-promising classically trained professional dancer who was drawn to the lights of Las Vegas, where she became a showgirl. After she impulsively marries her persistent suitor, she moves to his sleepy California coastal town, where he lives with his mother, Fanny, herself a former dancer. Fanny now runs a local dance studio. Michelle ends up bonding with some of Fanny's students after meeting them. Among the students are sweet Boo, who struggles with her body type; rebellious Sasha, who has the talent to be a ballet dancer but doesn't have her heart in it because of family issues; shapely Ginny, who's not comfortable in her own skin; and fun-loving Melanie, ready for whatever life throws at her. The students benefit from Michelle's knowledge, but she also benefits from them as they help her adapt to small-town life.
Off the Map
Idealistic, young Dr. Lily Brenner lands at an understaffed medical clinic in a tiny town in the South American jungle. She is joined by other young doctors, all of whom are running away from personal demons. The clinic was founded by enigmatic Ben Keeton, who was formerly the youngest chief of surgery at UCLA. Keeton will teach the newcomers how to save lives in the most-challenging environment they have ever faced.
Defying Gravity
An international crew of eight astronauts -- four men and four women -- sets off on a mysterious, six-year mission covering billions of miles aboard a ship called the Antares. Inspired by the fictional docudrama "Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets," the show tells the story of both the astronauts as they explore Venus and the other planets in the solar system, and their supportive and dedicated ground crew. Episodes alternate between the present, on the current mission, and flashbacks to earlier years when the final eight were still in the grueling selection and training process.
Flashforward
Residents of Los Angeles go about their day unaware that a mysterious event is about to change their lives. FBI agents Mark Benford and Demetri Noh are in a car chase; Benford's physician wife is in the middle of surgery; and Benford's friend Aaron Stark works on power lines high above the ground. Suddenly, something causes everyone in the world to black out for just over two minutes. During that time, each person sees a series of events in his or her own future -- some good, some bad, some apparently nonexistent. As people begin to piece together their visions on a worldwide website, Mark and Demetri use the information to try to pinpoint the cause of the blackout, and people are still trying to determine whether destiny can be changed, and what effect those changes may have on others.
Invasion
What if natural disasters were alien smokescreens designed to mask something far more ominous? When a hurricane threatens a small town in Florida, park ranger Russell Poole's young daughter is the only one to see small lights floating towards the water, seemingly unaffected by the vicious winds. At the time, he thinks nothing of her claim, but begins to suspect something may be amiss when his missing ex-wife is found, with no memory of what happened during the storm. In the aftermath of the storm, water-based creatures infiltrate the town and take over the bodies of the town's residents through a cloning process.
V (2009)
Earth has its first encounter with an extraterrestrial race. Calling themselves the Visitors and promoting peace, they seem to be friendly, but their congeniality may be a cover for a malevolent agenda. Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell), an FBI agent, discovers a secret about the aliens that threatens the lives of Earthlings, including her teenage son, who sees them as a sign of hope. Meanwhile, Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), already questioning his faith when the Visitors arrive, seeks answers outside his church and finds other dissidents who believe the Vs are not what they claim to be. The ABC series is billed as a reimagining of a 1980s miniseries by the same name.
Hannibal
Gifted criminal profiler Will Graham has a unique way of thinking that allows him to empathize with anyone, including psychopaths. But while helping the FBI pursue a particularly complicated serial killer, he decides he could use some help and enlists the brilliant psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter. The two form a partnership and it seems that there is no villain they can't catch together, but Lecter harbors a dark secret. His own brilliant mind has gone to the dark side and he has more in common with the criminals they hunt than Will could possibly imagine.
Anne with an E
This reimagining of the classic book and film is a coming-of-age story about a young orphan who is seeking love, acceptance and her place in the world. Amybeth McNulty stars as Anne, a 13-year-old who has endured an abusive childhood in orphanages and the homes of strangers. In the late 1890s, Anne is mistakenly sent to live with aging siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who live on Prince Edward Island. Anne, who proves to be uniquely spirited, imaginative and smart, transforms the lives of Marilla, Matthew and everyone else in their small town.
Pitch
Talented baseball pitcher Ginny Baker immediately rises to fame when she is called up by the San Diego Padres and becomes the first woman in Major League Baseball. She immediately sets in on the task of proving herself to her teammates, starting with team captain and catcher Mike Lawson. The two share an immediate chemistry, putting Mike in the middle of tensions between the beautiful new player and certain teammates who don't appreciate a woman out on the mound. Not all of her fellow Padres are so averse to change, with center fielder Blip Sanders providing support through her journey.
Colony
In the not-too-distant future, Los Angeles has been invaded and occupied by outside forces, causing a rift between the city's residents; some have collaborated with the occupation, while others are rebelling and suffering the consequences that come with that choice. Former FBI agent Will Bowman and his wife, Katie, must consider their familial obligations when making their decision because they were separated from their son, Bram, during the invasion. Proxy Snyder, a cunning and powerful leader within the occupational government, offers Will the opportunity to get Bram back if he works with the invading faction. Will's decision doesn't sit well with Katie, but the couple risk their lives -- and their relationship -- to protect their family.
Life Unexpected
After 15 years of being with different families in Oregon's foster-care system, Lux decides to try her luck as an emancipated minor. As she navigates the legal system in pursuit of that goal, she encounters her birth father, bar owner Nate "Baze" Bazile, living like an aging frat boy with two slacker roommates. He is stunned to learn that he has a teenage daughter and introduces Lux to her mother, radio personality Cate Cassidy, who is sad to learn her daughter has grown up in foster care but thrilled to meet and get to know the girl. She has plenty of opportunity to get acquainted when the judge decides Lux isn't ready to be emancipated and grants temporary custody to her birth parents.
Crisis
A vengeful mastermind ambushes a schoolbus carrying the children of Washington, D.C.'s, elite, abducting the children and their chaperons, and creating a national crisis. The powerful parents -- including the president himself -- find themselves at the mercy of the abductor with nowhere to turn, creating an unthinkable situation that puts the entire nation at risk. As the authorities work to rescue the children, the parents discover how far they are willing to go to protect the people they love.
Emerald City
When a tornado transports Dorothy Gale from Lucas, Kansas, to the faraway land of Oz, her arrival sets in motion a prophecy about a disastrous event known as The Beast Forever and strikes fear into the land's almighty ruler, the Wizard. On her quest to meet the Wizard in Emerald City, Dorothy encounters witches, an amnesiac soldier, a sheltered little boy and many more mysterious beings who will ultimately shape the future of Oz and Dorothy's place in it.

NYC Public Library - Favorite NYC History Books
The NYPL Milstein Division of United States History, Local History & Genealogy recommends our favorite, most readable, most memorable New York City nonfiction. These are the true stories of New York that engaged us, that intrigued us, and that we thought you might like to read as well.
97 Orchard: An Edible History Of Five Immigrant Families In One New York Tenement
Jane Ziegelman
Explores the culinary life that was the heart and soul of New York’s Lower East Side around the turn of the twentieth century—a city within a city, where Germans, Irish, Italians, and Eastern European Jews attempted to forge a new life. Through the experiences of five families, all of them residents of 97 Orchard Street, she takes readers on a vivid and unforgettable tour, from impossibly cramped tenement apartments down dimly lit stairwells where children played and neighbors socialized, beyond the front stoops where immigrant housewives found respite and company, and out into the hubbub of the dirty, teeming streets.
Staff says: “Food history and New York seamlessly woven together in a easy-to-read yet meticulously well researched book. I learned not only about the foods that certain immigrants ate, but how this changed over time, how Americans viewed ‘foreign’ cuisines over many different eras, and how this was a description of New York history and not just a reflection of imported appetites.”
American Passage: The History Of Ellis Island
Vincent J. Cannato
A chronicle of the landmark port of entry’s history documents its role as an execution site, immigration post, and deportation center that was profoundly shaped by evolving politics and ideologies.
Staff says: “The history of the island and the immigration station, and also of immigration policies in NY and the US. This book is well researched, scholarly and a very easy read. If you only read one book on Ellis Island, then this is it!”
The Battle For New York: The City At The Heart Of The American Revolution
Barnet Schecter
Provides a dramatic account of the seminal role played by New York City during the American Revolution, from its September 1776 fall to the British under General William Howe, through years of occupation, and beyond, interweaving illuminating profiles of the individuals on both sides of the conflict with a study of the cultural, political, social, and economic events of the eighteenth century.
Staff says:“It sticks in the mind, especially for the quality of the research and the tour of today’s New York in light of the events of history.”
The Big Oyster: History On The Half Shell
Mark Kurlansky
For centuries New York was famous for its oysters, which until the early 1900s played such a dominant a role in the city’s economy, gastronomy, and ecology that the abundant bivalves were Gotham’s most celebrated export, a staple food for the wealthy, the poor, and tourists alike, and the primary natural defense against pollution for the city’s congested waterways.
Staff says: “Lots of good NYC history in there along with the fascinating world of food history and bivalve science.”
Dark Harbor: The War For The New York Waterfront
Nathan Ward
Traces the historical influence of the Mafia on New York’s waterfront, drawing on the investigative series of New York Sun reporter Malcolm “Mike” Johnson into the region’s racketeering, violent territorial disputes, and union corruption.
Staff says: “The real story behind the film On the Waterfront. I also get annoyed when films are historically inaccurate for the sake of plot, ending, etc when the truth is probably just as exciting: see Bridge On The River Kwai. Well researched, and exciting.”
The Great Bridge: The Epic Story Of The Building Of The Brooklyn Bridge
David McCullough
Evaluates the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge as the greatest engineering triumph of its time, citing the pivotal contributions of chief engineer Washington Roebling and the technical problems and political corruption that challenged the project.
Staff says: “A favorite that everyone knows for good reason!”
Eat The City: A Tale Of The Fishers, Trappers, Hunters, Foragers, Slaughterers, Butchers, Farmers, Poultry Minders, Sugar Refiners, Cane Cutters, Beekeepers, Winemakers, And Brewers Who Built New York
Robin Shulman
Traces the experiences of New Yorkers who grow and produce food in bustling city environments, placing urban food production in a context of hundreds of years of history to explain the changing abilities of cities to feed people.
Staff says: “This interesting collection of micro histories tells the story of such New York food industries as beekeeping, fishing, urban farming, brewing, winemaking, and butchering. The author profiles people currently involved in each industry and then traces the origin, rise, usual fall, and then resurgence of that field. It was fascinating to learn about the methods of the different food industries within the unique environment of New York City.”
Five Points: The 19th-Century New York City Neighborhood That Invented Tap Dance, Stole Elections, And Became The World’s Most Notorious Slum
Tyler Anbinder
Details the notorious neighborhood that was once filled with gaming dens, bordellos, dirty streets, and tenements, that welcomed such visitors as Charles Dickens and Abraham Lincoln, and brings to light the hidden world that existed beneath the squalor—a world that invented tap dancing and hosted the prize-fight of the century.
Staff says: “An accessible and broad work looking at the notorious downtown slum’s population and sociology.”
The Island at the Center of the World: the Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America
Russell Shorto
A history of the Dutch role in the establishment of Manhattan discusses the rivalry between England and the Dutch Republic, focusing on the power struggle between Holland governor Peter Stuyvesant and politician Adriaen van der Donck that shaped New York’s culture and social freedoms.
Staff says: “The book is well-researched, the stories are well-told, and it will flesh out that point of history that most people only remember as song lyrics: 'Even old New York was once New Amsterdam…’”
Just Kids
Patti Smith
In this memoir, singer-songwriter Patti Smith shares tales of New York City: the denizens of Max’s Kansas City, the Hotel Chelsea, Scribner’s, Brentano’s and Strand bookstores and her new life in Brooklyn with a young man named Robert Mapplethorpe—the man who changed her life with his love, friendship, and genius.
Staff says: “I rather enjoyed the descriptions of Patti and Robert are discovering New York, especially Brooklyn, together. She writes prose like a poet, with detail and care and without an overabundance of imprecise words.”
Ladies And Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics, And The Battle For The Soul Of A City
Jonathan Mahler
A kaleidoscopic portrait of New York City in 1977, The Bronx Is Burning is the story of two epic battles: the fight between Yankee Reggie Jackson and team manager Billy Martin, and the battle between Mario Cuomo and Ed Koch for the city’s mayorship. Buried beneath these parallel conflicts—one for the soul of baseball, the other for the soul of the city—was the subtext of race.
Staff says: “During the 1977 World Series, Howard Cosell really did say "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx is burning” as flames licked up in the distance from Yankee Stadium. 1977 was the crux of the “bad ol’ days” of New York City—white flight had taken its toll; unemployment was outrageous for everyone, but close to 80% for young blacks and hispanics; infrastructure was in disrepair; crime was outrageous. This was the New York that inspired movies like “Death Wish” and “The Warriors.” NYC had bottomed out in 1977 and this is the history of that fateful year.“
Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York
Luc Sante
Luc Sante’s Low Life is a portrait of America’s greatest city, the riotous and anarchic breeding ground of modernity. This is not the familiar saga of mansions, avenues, and robber barons, but the messy, turbulent, often murderous story of the city’s slums; the teeming streets—scene of innumerable cons and crimes whose cramped and overcrowded housing is still a prominent feature of the cityscape.
Staff says: "This book sparked an interest in shady urban histories for me. Now that I know a lot more about the city and the context of the time frame, I even read it again. Fun, even if sensationalistic.”
Native New Yorkers: The Legacy of the Algonquin people of New York
Evan T. Pritchard
A comprehensive and fascinating account of the graceful Algonquin civilization that once flourished in the area that is now New York.
Staff says: “New York history from the Native point of view, and it will make you confront every sentimental myth you may have heard before. Everyone should read it.”
The Poisoner’s Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York
Deborah Blum
The story of how poison rocked Jazz Age New York City. A pair of forensic scientists began their trailblazing chemical detective work, fighting to end an era when untraceable poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime.
Staff says: “Absolutely fascinating. I was surprised when I found myself at the end already. Unlike a modern forensic science drama on TV, the chemistry is all there—yet still readable and interesting. The era (late 1910s-mid 1930s) and setting are both equally captivating. So many times I thought I knew something that I clearly didn"t. This book taught me tons and still read quickly like a mystery novel, only the mysteries were all actual cases and hence more interesting than usual literary invention.”
Up in the Old Hotel
Joseph Mitchell
Saloon-keepers and street preachers, gypsies and steel-walking Mohawks, a bearded lady and a 93-year-old “seafoodetarian” who believes his specialized diet will keep him alive for another two decades. These are among the people that Joseph Mitchell immortalized in his reportage for The New Yorker and in four books—McSorley’s Wonderful Saloon, Old Mr. Flood, The Bottom of the Harbor, and Joe Gould’s Secret—that are still renowned for their precise, respectful observation, their graveyard humor, and their offhand perfection of style.
Staff says: “Mitchell, in an incredibly vivid writing style, tells the tales of some of the people he met in NYC in the '20s - '50s. The people are the history of New York.”

The Nuns
Tumblr media
Richard Chetwynd
Sister Mary knew how to run a classroom. She knew there was only one way, and nothing could persuade her otherwise. Her methods were tried and true. They had worked for her and worked before she, herself, had attended St Francis Elementary School, and they had been passed down the Order like the word of God.
Her greatest rival at the school was Sister Abuella. She was of the new breed; softer, kinder, more merciful and, according to Sister Mary, more likely to allow the students to slack off and shirk their responsibilities. Several students had caught the eye of Sister Mary for daydreaming the whole day, which she believed was the result of Sister Abuella’s leniency. Without discipline, the Great Tempter, who had a knack for targeting children, the least armored against His crafty machinations, would take up residence, and once that happens you need an exorcist to dislodge Him. Sister Mary had the argument of a pediatrician: preventive medicine was best. An exorcist was like open-heart surgery. Avoiding that seemed to be a goal worthy of the Holy Spirit. And what was more important than one’s spiritual health? To Sister Mary, it was all.
Sister Abuella told Father Mike that such an interpretation of the spirit was counter to the most important teachings of Christ, which, according to her understanding, stipulated that the spiritual state of the child was pure innocence, and, therefore, much closer to the Holy Spirit than even Father Mike, or she, if she might be so bold to say so. Father Mike saw her point, and was especially taken by the shape of her mouth when she bowed slightly after questioning the depth of his faith, but he knew too in his heart that such innocence as the child’s was where Lucifer sought entrance, and he was never going to stand in the way of Sister Mary, whose work had already produced 5 CEO’s, 10 professors with tenure, and 3 novelists, one of whom has been on the NY Times Bestseller list for months. Still, Father Mike was sympathetic to Sister Abuella—such beauty
was bound to have rightness on its side—she was younger, and seemed to connect with the students in ways he himself had tried to cultivate but failed, thanks to his having never really been a kid but a priest in training since birth. The fact that she was front-cover beautiful proved her faith, a faith that was the obverse of the Lepers’ and therefore more selfless, or so it seemed to him.
Sister Mary had a very effective method for dealing with students who had trouble concentrating on their lessons. She’d start by strolling between their desks with her hands folded throughout the exercise. When there were a number of unruly or drifting students at once, she’d rearrange the seating so she could stand among them at the center of their angular circle. Arms folded across her ample chest, she was a sight the children avoided by keeping their eyes on their own work; her hulking figure in proximity was enough to dampen their natural inclinations, at least as long as the lesson lasted.
A couple of years ago, Sister Mary’s methods took a curious turn. The school cafeteria was in the midst of remodeling. The children sat at their desks eating their lunches and sipping their drinks brought from home. This went on for six weeks while the workers completed the remodeling. One day, toward the end of the work, Sister Mary walked into the cafeteria just as the workers wheeled in an enormous carton box containing one of the new energy-efficient refrigerators. She found a Catholic among the crew, and the cornered Rodrigo agreed to deliver any future refrigerator boxes to the rectory basement-door, and stack them neatly on the gravel. Once a week, Rodrigo brought the boxes and Sister Mary had Mr. Johnson, the janitor, stack them in the maintenance room, and to wait for further instructions. Finally, after accumulating more than enough boxes, Sister Mary relieved Rodrigo of his charitable work.
It was because of these boxes and Sister Mary’s grand strategy to combat not only the spiritual demise of her students but their intellectual sloth and scatter-shot attention that had Sister Abuella so upset.
Sister Mary had prayed to the Blessed Mother which gave her frustrations a deeper perspective, and in all her thinking she had come to only one plan, and it was final. Sister Mary was
one of the more decisive nuns in the convent, and Father Mike always experienced a slight trepidation at the threshold of one of her uncompromising decisions. Being a Catholic school, there was a certain pedagogical autonomy when it came to the behavior of children. We educate, you maintain, that’s the Catholic way. One could mind his or her own business, or go to hell.
But Sister Mary wasn’t inhuman. She knew her children were worthy of Christ’s grace. She knew that the Holy Spirit was in all of them and her job was to bring it to the surface regardless of how deeply it was buried. She despised failure, which she associated with Satan, who had failed as an angel, failed to be grateful. The Holy Spirit was to be spurred through the power of the intellect, and if she was to make good Catholics they would have to have minds as sharp as thorns. Nothing killed the Catholic brand quicker than uniform stupidity.
Mr. Johnson presented Sister Mary with a box-knife and a demonstration as to its proper use, and even though Sister Mary’s posture told him she was growing impatient, he didn’t rush but repeated a few of the most important details. As per her instructions, he took one of the big boxes to her classroom and stuck it flat behind the bookcase. That day, Sister Mary got to class 15 minutes early to prepare her box. She cut the flaps and an extra foot off the top and bottom, removed a giant U from one side, then folded it flat again and slid it behind the bookcase just as the first students were entering the classroom, a few of them glancing at the lengths of cardboard on her desktop, which Sister Mary nonchalantly slid beneath her mat while the students settled.
She took roll, noting Samantha’s absence. From the back of the class, Johnny Roberts, keeping in character, had balled a sheet of paper and flung it at Faith O’Malley on the other side of the room. Everyone giggled, which caused Sister Mary to turn from the blackboard where she had just written a sentence they were about to dissect. She saw the ball’s final erratic movements across the linoleum floor. Johnny, of course, was buried deep into the surface of his desk. The rest of the students had straightened their posture and had folded their hands. Without hesitation Sister Mary retrieved her box and then took a few steps toward the center of the class, addressing her students in a calm, relaxed manner.
“If someone does not tell me who is responsible for the missile that flew across my classroom, you will all go to detention. Before,” she raised her finger, “that is, you go to Hell.” She paused. “Why to Hell for such a small sin? I’ll tell you why. Our Father in Heaven knows that I am here to serve Him and His Holy Spirit by serving you, and that you are mocking me and shielding a sinner, someone who would interrupt the education provided by God and the Holy Spirit, someone who is obviously acting on Satan’s instructions. Now, I’m going to leave the classroom. I expect to find upon my return the name of the perpetrator on my desk.”
Sister Mary stepped into the hall and walked toward the main office. When she got there she poked her head in, smiled at Claire the secretary, and walked back to her classroom. The students were as she had left them, sitting upright, hands folded, eyes front. On her desk was a piece of notebook paper with the name ‘Johnny Roberts’ written on it. She noticed at once that it was written by his hand. It was exactly the result she had wanted.
“Miss O’Donnell, please vacate your seat and move to Mr. Robert’s seat. Johnny, please take Faith’s seat.” She put her hands at her hips. “Let’s move, God doesn’t have all day.”
The students switched seats, got settled, and all together they folded their hands and looked at the sentence on the blackboard: “Life is 90 percent how you take it, and 10 how you make it.” But Sister Mary wasn’t ready to begin the lesson. She still had Johnny’s sin to attend to. Though he had confessed, there was still penance to do.
She took her flattened cardboard box in hand and held it before her. Faith, along with the other fifth-graders, was staring intently while Sister Mary unfolded it and stood it up. Johnny had opened his notebook and propped a pen into his hand. Sister Mary then asked the class what they thought the box might be for. Most students crinkled their mouths and brows, and would never have thought to give answer. A few of the more naive ones spoke up, one of whom noticed the refrigerator markings on the boxes’ flank.
“Quite right,” said Sister Mary. “Used to be. Now it is what I call an FTS Box. Any among you know what FTS stands for? No one? Well please, allow to me to explain: it stands for Fix TheStudent. Does anyone know how it functions? No? Well, please, allow me to demonstrate. She loved that “allow me” opening; it gave whatever she said the requisite tint of humility.
Johnny knew it before he knew it, knew that the box had something to do with him. He was always the cause of Sister Mary’s anguish, not to mention Sister Abuella, Sister Rose and Sister Lorna. He couldn’t help himself, he was like that. He had let his pen drop to his desk when Sister Mary raised the box above her head as if to illustrate how insignificant, how light it was, how as an object it practically lacked substance; to Johnny she looked like a wrestler about to toss her rag-doll- opponent from the ring. She stepped forward and set the open box down over Johnny’s desk. He didn’t dare move. He could see the ceiling or blackboard, walled on 3 sides. To the left and right, Sister Mary had written slogans with a sharpie: Face Front, Pay Attention.
Not only did Sister Mary keep Johnny in his box for the rest of the semester, but she relentlessly lobbied Father Mike to ensure that Johnny, no matter which class he was in, no matter who was the teacher, that he would have to sit in a box from beginning to end. She convinced Father Mike that, for a case like Johnny’s, it was the only thing likely to work, and that she could prove it. “Let it go and watch the improvement,” she had said.
Johnny’s grades did improve. Father Mike had all the usual arguments against such draconian measures but he couldn’t dispute the results. It wasn’t long before you could walk into any classroom in the school and find several students sitting inside recycled refrigerator boxes. In the meantime, Sister Abuella had a minor breakdown, and had to take a leave of absence from teaching. She wrote several accusatory letters to Mother Superior about Sister Mary’s merciless measures, letters which Sister Carol shared with Sister Mary, her old classmate in the convent. Father Mike visited Sister Abuella several times to help calm her down, and to see if she might not want to be transferred to a diocese more in line with her soft approach, Africa, for instance.
Parents complained, at first, but Sister Mary was always able to address them personally, and she had the backing of Father Mike, who didn’t dare question what was working. Christ, after all, suffered for his glory. It was as Christian as feeding the poor. Johnny’s parents threatened to keep him out of school, but finally relented when they saw that other children also had to sit in boxes. “It’s cruel,” they seemed to say, “if Johnny was singled out for a box.” Sister Mary explained that they really had no choice. Don’t think of it as a box, she said, think of it as a tiny classroom in which Johnny is the only student. You parents pay a pittance for that kind of one on one attention. Peter and Catherine didn’t want to remove Johnny to the public school system, which everyone agreed was a politicized disaster zone bent on quotas and memorization, and they also knew that he wasn’t the best student to begin with. He had difficulty concentrating for more than a few seconds at a time.
After the first semester of boxes, parents of other students insisted that their children receive boxes too. It was, the argument went, totally unfair to make their children, whether they had concentration problems or not, to sit in an open classroom without the benefit of the boxes’ focusing aperture.
Sister Abuella couldn’t understand it, so she decided to pray more, and Sister Mary, pushing 70 from a family of disease-prone devotees, prepared herself for an eternity among the angels of God, guarding the realms of the Holy Spirit with whatever it takes.

A Window to the Void by Cymoril_Melnibone
What some people call ’lucky’ isn’t so much luck as just avoiding disaster. In my opinion, that word should be reserved for events like winning the lottery, or finding a lump of gold in your back yard. It’s not really lucky to get an early diagnosis of a life-threatening disease, nor is it lucky to survive a catastrophic car crash. But people say that sort of thing all the time. Maybe it’s a personal thing. People have been calling me ‘lucky’ for years now, and it grates on me. I certainly didn’t feel very fortunate after the accident. That afternoon was stormy, the clouds bruised purple-grey and pregnant with unshed rain. Thunder rattled the street signs as my brother and I hurried down the winding footpath round the bays, our shoulders hunched in anticipation of the impending downpour. But instead of rain, something else came down from the sky. I’d been nearest to the lamp post when the lightning hit, but I don’t remember a single detail of the actual event. My brother recalls a searing flash, then the stink of burning hair and the roar of thunder overhead. I’d been thrown ten feet into the road, and the next car stopped just in time, assuming there had been a hit and run. The driver was an ER nurse on his way home. He had administered CPR, and restarted my seized heart. He was the first one to say it. “You were really lucky I finished my shift early,” he’d told me, “otherwise I’d never have been driving past at that time.” Lucky. Everything hurt, but my right side was the worst. The lightning strike had arced into my shoulder as my bare arm grazed the metal pole, part of the current running through me to the ground. “You were lucky it wasn’t your left side,” explained the doctor, “it could have burned a hole through your heart.” Lying in the hospital in blind agony, I didn’t feel lucky at all. The shockwave had impacted my eyes, causing the corneas to buckle and fracture. The result was at once horrible and quite beautiful – milky, star-shaped occlusions known as ‘star cataracts’. They were able to replace the left cornea with a dead girl’s. They wouldn’t tell me who she was, but she was around my own age, and she wasn’t lucky at all; she drowned in a river, trapped under a fallen branch. My right eye was unsalvageable; damage to the optic nerve meant I’d never see out of it again. They offered to replace the cornea anyway, to match the other one. But I decided that liked the strangely pretty, crystalline shape of the star cataract. Even if I didn’t call it lucky, it was a reminder that I’d survived being hit by lightning.
My brother, Michael, forever blamed himself for the events of that day. It was his fault that we were delayed at the beach; he wanted to chat up some girl he liked, long after we were supposed to head home. I forgave him years ago – most fifteen-year-old boys are at the mercy of their hormones – but his guilt lingered so strongly that I worried it had truly damaged him, that he’d never have a normal life. In a way, the accident hurt him more than it had me. He was always there. If I moved flat, he’d turn up with a van, loading all the boxes, insisting that I shouldn’t lift a finger. Every birthday was elaborate, and every year Michael offered to pay for surgery to fix my star-shaped eye. I think it really bothered him, seeing the cataract. Every time he looked at me he saw his careless teenage lust staring back at him, overcoming his common sense, putting his sister in danger. When I moved to the other side of the country, he came with me. He uprooted his whole life; quit his job, left his girlfriend, and sold everything he owned, just to stay close to his half-blind little sister. In truth, I’d done it mostly to get away from him, to try and gain a little independence. But I couldn’t tell Mike that. I suppose I reconciled it with myself that he needed to do something that really cost him, to atone for the mistake he felt he had made. And I hoped it would finally free him, that such a huge sacrifice would be enough to fill the gaping, guilty void in his heart. But it was not. Looking after his crippled sister had moved from penance to pathology – it wasn’t just about the guilt any more. It had become his purpose. It had become who he was. I felt unkind when I thought that he was a little too in love with his martyrdom. And I felt selfish because I didn’t tell him to go away. But I guess I’d grown so used to him always being there.
My right eye had been my master eye, and adjusting to using only my left had been surprisingly difficult. The lack of depth perception especially bothered me, and I really hated the sudden surge in popularity for 3D films; they highlighted my disability even more. And with right-eye dominance goes right-hand dominance, which was also a problem for me. The lightning strike had damaged a lot more than just my eyes; the sudden and powerful muscle contractions caused by that massive electrical current had pulverised several bones, my own shocked flesh like a vice. Comminuted fractures heal poorly, and I could never fully straighten my right arm, or regain much mobility in that wrist. Retraining yourself to be left-handed takes work and practice. Mike insisting on doing everything for me really didn’t help – he took over to the point where I swear he would have wiped my ass if I’d asked him to. After we moved, I embraced my inner bitch, and I’d yell at him to fuck off, to leave me alone for one goddamn hour and let me do things myself. He blamed the outbursts on my ‘trauma’, and would be so understanding that I’d grind my teeth in frustration until my jaws ached as much as my wrist. In truly dark and shameful moments, I’d wish that he had been the one who had brushed past the lamp post. Sometimes I’d wish that passing nurse hadn’t stopped his car. And the more people told me I was ‘lucky’, the less I told the truth. Eventually, the story behind the star cataract became a mundane little lie, just a curious birth defect; my twisted arm just the legacy of a clumsy child. Then one day, on a visit to the coast, I saw something. And I saw it with my blind eye.
When both eyes are open, I see nothing with the right eye; not even darkness. When I close my good eye, sometimes I fancy I can see something through the star. I try to convince myself that maybe a few photons can drift through all that damaged jelly, and that the optic nerve isn’t as fried as I know it is. On particularly bright days, like the morning of our sojourn by the sea, I experiment. I stare into the sun with my blind eye, to see if anything at all can get through. That day was breathlessly clear, the sky perfect and cloudless, blue as a child’s painting. I sat in the warm sand and covered my good eye, turning my face full into the glare. Something flashed across the blank nothing of my blindness – so quickly that I almost didn’t register it. As quick as a lightning strike. “Jesus!” I swore, dropping my hand. Mike was there in an instant, “What is it, Brooke?” “I saw something! Out of my bad eye. Just for a second.” His worry turned sceptical, brows humouring me with a frown. “It was probably nothing. Random neurons firing.” “No. I saw something.” I turned away from him, conveniently blocking out his condescending gaze by covering my good eye. “I’m gonna try again.” “Hey, don’t do that! Staring into the sun can’t be good for you, blind or not.” Ignoring him, I turned my head again, just catching something – a fracture in the field of nothing, a hint of a line, straight as a torch beam shining into the heavens. Tilting my chin carefully, I snuck up on it, triangulating it back into my field of view where no view should have been possible. Yes, there; it was like torchlight. But instead of a white line on black, it was an eerie, impossible reversal. A black beam on a field of nothing. I pointed with my other hand, “It’s like a light, a beam, shining up from the ground and into the sky. Over there.” Uncovering my sighted eye, I squinted in the bright sunlight, to see where I was pointing. My finger hovered directly over the smaller of two islands in the harbour; just a hump of rock and sand, with a few scraggly bushes clinging to it. “There. It’s coming from the island.” Mike squinted at the salt-blasted landmark, then made a noise that was both dismissive and unreasonably irritating. “I don’t know what you think you’re “seeing”, B.” I could hear the quotation marks. “But there’s nothing out there, trust the guy with two good eyes. Just seagull shit and a bunch of rocks.” “Seriously, Mike. I can see something there!” I covered my eye again, peering into the blank grey nothing. And there it was again, the unwavering column of darkness, like a negative flare. “Okay, whatever,” he shrugged, shuffling his toes into the sand, “there’s some kind of mystery beacon out there that only you can see. Big deal. We’ll let the coast guard know and they can check it out. Or just tell us you’re nuts.” “No.” I sounded like a petulant kid. And I didn’t care. “I want to see what it is.” “You’re joking, right?” “We can hire a kayak and paddle out there. People do it all the time.” He bunched his hands in the pockets of his shorts, a sure sign of resistance. “No, Brooke. I’m not taking you out there.” I sniffed, snatching my towel and sandals, “Fine. I’ll go out myself.” It was manipulative and I knew it was. I could see the glassy panic rising in his eyes already at the thought of his cripple sister clumsily rowing out to sea, dashing herself against a dangerous crag of rock. He took his hands out of his pockets and picked up his backpack, every line of his body a quandary. “All right. You win. We’ll check it out quickly, but then we’re going home. The weather is turning to shit later this afternoon anyway. C’mon.” He held out one broad hand, and I grabbed it with my good arm, letting him pull me up from the sand.
It was an easy row out to the island, though I don’t think I helped much. The two-seater kayak slid effortlessly through the bright water with Mike’s oar dipping and rising either side of the orange hull, each stroke strong and sure. It was farther than I’d thought, the distance from the shore deceptive, but the fresh tang of the ocean smelled good, like a promise. We beached on a narrow rind of sand on the far side. Mike hauled the vessel up onto the rocks and tied the lead rope securely around one of the stunted, thorny bushes. “Don’t want a freak wave to get it,” he told me, “there’s no way we’d be able to swim back.” Of course, he meant me. There was no way that I would be able to swim back, life vest or not; but he could easily save himself if some rogue tsunami washed the boat away. My hand over my good eye, I scanned about for the mystery beam, and found it immediately. It beckoned from the apex of the v-shaped slash of sand, cradled between rising rocks. By covering and uncovering my eye, watching it appear with blindness and disappear with sight, I could make out that it originated from somewhere beneath the ground. “Whatever’s making it is under the beach,” I explained, and I started to dig one-handed, conscious of how awkward I must look, like a child pretending to be a crane. Mike gave me a lopsided grin, something hopeful in the set of it, “You’re fucking with me, aren’t you?” “Jesus, Mike. No, I saw something, and we’re right on top of it. Either help me, or shut up.” Resigned, or more likely concerned that I’d hurt myself scrabbling in the hard-packed sand, he retrieved one of the oars out of kayak, “Here. This will make things faster. Just don’t break it, or we’ll lose the deposit.” We dug for maybe twenty minutes, slowly widening the ever-collapsing hole. When the blade of the oar struck something hard, I made a small and triumphant sound of excitement. “It’s probably just rock,” Mike cautioned. Ignoring him and my blisters, I kept digging.
The circle of black metal sat on the sand. It was smaller than a sewer lid and thinner than a dinner plate, yet it was obscenely heavy and it had taken both of us to get it out of the hole. As we lifted it, the weight shifted alarmingly inside it, as though the object contained a sea of liquid lead. “What the hell is it?” I asked. Mike said nothing for a long moment. He stared at the thing we had unburied, wiping sweat from his shiny, shaved scalp. I stared at it too, but with my blind eye. The anti-light was still shining from it, dark and strong, straight up into the sky. The surface of the disc was neither cool nor hot, though the black metal should have quickly grown scalding beneath the afternoon sun. And Mike said he still couldn’t see even the vaguest hint of the beam rising from it. “This is starting to freak me out,” my brother husked finally, his voice low and uncertain. “Maybe it’s some kind of NASA black box?” I wondered, running my fingers over the slick, smooth surface, “maybe only special equipment can detect the beacon?” “Yeah, or only all their half-blind astronauts can see it.” He was trying hard, but he wasn’t even convincing himself. “Maybe you shouldn’t touch it. It could be radioactive.” I flattened my palms against it slowly, and grinned up at him, “If it is, then we’ve probably had lethal exposure already.” “Christ, Brooke! Why do you joke about shit like that?” My smile died. “I dunno. Just trying to lighten the mood.” Mike huffed out a breath, one short step away from picking me up and bodily hauling me out of range. “Look, we’re going to head back and call the authorities. Let them deal with the damn thing.” He was already unwinding the kayak rope and pushing the vessel back onto the sand. “Okay, whatever. I hope they give us a reward or something.” “I just hope they don’t lock us up,” Mike shot back. I stood over the object, looking down on it, still reluctant to leave it just lying there. What if it disappeared, and took the only thing my blind eye had ever been able to detect along with it? “Take a picture of me with it?” “God!” He saw the stubborn set of my chin, and knew we would get home quicker if he didn’t argue. “All right, fine. One pic, then we’re getting out of here.” He retrieved his phone from the waterproof pocket in his vest, and aimed it at me, tilting it to get both me and the object in the frame. “Okay, done. Let’s move.” “One more. I want one with me standing on it.” “Hurry up then.” I stepped off the sand and onto the disc of black metal. A wave of violent static discharge engulfed me, the crackle and shock of it terrifyingly familiar. And then the beach was gone, replaced by total darkness.
My heart still beat. I seemed to be in some sort of cave, though ‘cave’ didn’t feel like quite the right word. While my good eye showed me only thick darkness, the view through my cataract was quite different. Everything had an anti-halo, strange and wrong, limned in black light. I could make out that the chamber around me was cramped and oval, the walls and ceiling oddly ribbed. Forcing my unused eye muscles to focus, I realised the ribs were metallic tubing, interspersed with humps of tangled, colourless cables. Ahead of me, the mouth of the chamber opened into a low tunnel, its construction much the same. The narrow throat curved to the right, and out of sight. A dull thump and CRACK! right behind me spiked my skull with sharp, instant fear. Pulse a drumbeat in my ears, I stayed crouched for a long moment, then turned slowly, instinctively shielding my face. It was Mike. Groping blindly, he started yelling my name, stumbling into the walls. I hadn’t heard him sound so panicked since the accident. “I’m here,” I called softly, touching his arm, “Mike, I’m right here.” “I can’t see anything,” he warbled, terror writ large on his broad features, eerie and distorted in the soft-hard shadows, “I can’t fucking see anything!” I took both his flailing hands in mine and soothed him until he stopped shaking. “It’s okay. I can see for both of us. We’re in some kind of cave, with tubes all over the walls. There’s a tunnel up ahead.” “A cave? That doesn’t… where the hell are we, B?” “I have no idea. But if we follow the tunnel, maybe we can find a way out.” The passage was far too low to stand up in, so we crabbed along painfully, bent over double, shuffling, sometimes crawling. My voice guiding him, Mike followed behind me. It took me some time to realise that the noise I kept hearing was his teeth clicking together as he shivered in the darkness. It was cold, much, much colder than the waning heat of the spring afternoon we had left behind, now just a memory, bright and distant. I could see my breath steaming in front of me, black as a cloud of ink in deep water, outlined by the maddening, impossible light. “You just… vanished,” my brother told me, his voice halting and stuttering between shivers, echoing strangely in the tunnel, “and I ran over. As soon as my feet touched it, I felt an electric shock. Then I was here.” “What happened to your phone?” “Gone. I must have dropped it. When it jolted me” The air tasted stale, flat and expired, and I couldn’t feel any breeze. A musty sourness choked my nose, as if old clothes, heavy with mildew, had been pulled from an ancient closet and puffed their invisible spores everywhere. My own teeth were chattering like castanets now, and Mike stopped talking completely, saving his energy as he thumped and groped blindly behind me. Just as I had decided the tunnel was going to go on forever, that we would freeze to death here in the dark, the passage began to widen. It rose abruptly, leading into a large, vaulted space. “There’s a chamber ahead,” I whispered to Mike, squinting back at the hunched, backlit shape that was my brother. His only response was to nod blindly, arms hugged over his chest for warmth.
The floor and walls of our new, larger prison were built the same as the others. Whoever had built this place had an inexhaustible source of those monochrome tubes; only their width varied, every few feet punctuated with tangles of cabling like the huge nests of industrial rats. Rising above us, the cylinders converged at the apex of this chamber, then appeared to have melted together. The slick puddle rippled impossibly across the ceiling, thick rivulets flowing down in a complicated umbilical mess. Neither organic nor plastic, I thought of intestines, colourless mushrooms, the eyes of snails, watching those smaller filaments branching off and hanging in the air. They moved and quested lazily as our presence disturbed the stale atmosphere. Connected to some of those filaments were fleshless corpses. I had no doubt these were genuine remains. And I was just as certain they were not human. Each skeleton had two arms, but their bones were wrong; too simple, too heavy, too long. The cages of ribs were a complicated contrast, honeycombed with holes, as if eroded by the relentless black light that crawled and spilled through their substance. None possessed legs or pelvis, each strung-bead spine splayed into a horsetail of fattened filaments, grey as sick spittle and dissolving into the floor. I could not look for long at what had been their heads. Eyeless, jawless, smooth as a puffball fungus, each skull lolled on a neck with too many tapering vertebrae. Hundreds of wires pierced the uniform domes of black-grey bone, needles through eggshells. The only discernible facial features were the twin slits of nostrils, each as long as my index finger. “Holy… shit!” I clenched the words through juddering jaws. “What? Oh God, what is it, B?” “Bodies. Weird bodies. All tangled up in the tubes from the roof. It’s hard to explain.” Mike’s voice was broken, I heard the click of his throat as he swallowed saliva. “Can… can you see a way out?” “No. Not yet.” Stray filaments stretched and rose from the skulls of the dead creatures as I approached, their languid stir like the autonomic response of plants. Faint black light flickered at the ends of a few, winking in and out, like dying flashlights. The relentless cold had penetrated through to my bones, and I felt numb, my head filling with an unreal fog. Mike jogged on the spot behind me, his hands wrapped into his armpits. We needed a way out, and we needed to find it fast, before we froze to death. Reaching out to the swaying filaments, I touched a fingertip to the pulse of hypnotic anti-light, then snatched it back as a sucking heat flashed up my hand. “Mike! Over here, these things are warm.” As I held up my palms, more of the snaky filaments lifted from their skull-cradles, extending from their long-dead hosts and questing for my flesh. Warmth began to flow through me, such a blessed, comforting heat. I reluctantly drew away to prise the frozen meat of my brother’s shaking hands from his chest, thrusting them into the anemone heat. But when that forest of alien hairs grazed his skin, their reaction was very different. Mike’s scream of agony was a molten sound as they entered his fingers, burrowing slickly beneath his nails and deep into his hands. Black light bloomed around him like an alien flower. My equilibrium swayed as a queasy, sucking noise filled the room. Cables twisted and writhed all over the walls, revealing glimpses of other pulsing tunnels, then coalescing into purposeless tangles. But on the far wall, smooth as a camera’s aperture, the animate tubes dilated like a great iris. Revealing a huge window. Sunlight streamed in, but cold and distant; our familiar star greatly diminished in size. A blue-white marble floated far to the right, lonely, tiny, beautiful and terrifying. It was familiar from so many glossy space posters, overused in countless documentaries. I fixed it at the centre of my star cataract, and my scarred cornea wept tears of black light. Mike bubbled out a groan behind me, his arms blistered with tangled nodules, colonised by the parasitic worms of alien wires. “Oh god,” he moaned, his knees buckling, “Oh god, oh god!” The room shuddered, and the view through the window shifted faintly. “Brooke. Get… out. You need… to get out,” Michael whispered, each word an agony, each breath a laboured gulp. One arm twitched and spasmed, pointing toward an uncurling tangle on the floor. The deep black shine of metal, coalescing into a circle rising from the boil of cables, identical to the one on the beach. Mike’s skin was losing colour, draining to white, then no hue at all, and he fought as more filaments pierced his neck and cheeks, burrowing for his skull and the precious, energy-rich soup inside it. “I can fight you!” he screamed, his eyes welling anti-light and black blood, a spray of it as his head thrashed from side to side, “I’d fight anything for her! I can feel your thoughts like you can feel mine! I can destroy this ship, I just need to -” Black light seared the room, bright enough to burn my starblind eye. When it faded, only the wan sunlight from the viewing window remained, picking out the white bones of my brother, lovingly tangled in quivering wires.
A passing fishing boat spotted me on the little island, shivering in the sand, my hands covered in strange pin-prick blisters. The disc was gone, and no column of black light shone into the heavens anymore. All that remained was a stupid crippled girl and her worthless, one-eyed tears. They searched for Mike for several weeks. Everyone was hopeful to start with, so reassuring, even though I told them it was futile from the start. He might have been lucky, they said, you just never know. They stopped saying those things after the first two weeks, and the search became an exercise in grimness as everyone had to admit we were looking for a body, not a person. And no matter how I told my story, or to whom, not a soul believed me. Just like them, you’ll all write my babbling off as insane, as the trauma-induced delusions of an already compromised girl. For a while, I even tried to believe they were right. I coached myself that I hadn’t seen those things, I couldn’t have visited an alien starship. Mike had just slipped on the slopes of the rocky islet and smashed his head as he fell into the sea. They found his phone, but it was so sodden and corroded that the photos were long gone, unrecoverable despite my initial insistence that the evidence was inside. But now, like the sea eating away those delicate circuits, any belief that I imagined it all is being eroded. The black light has returned. At first it was random flashes, like a stuttering searchlight in the sky. But as the fear-drenched nightmares of my screaming brother have diminished, the light has waxed ever stronger. The steady beam shines downwards this time, its steady gaze sweeping our planet, ever-widening, gathering power. Tonight, it is so brilliant that I can see everything, clear and cold, with both eyes; the right in grey-black monochrome, and the left in vibrant colour. I don’t know what it means. I don’t know what happens next. Perhaps some of you will die, your flesh instantly vaporised like that of my late brother. Or perhaps everything human must be sacrificed, living fuel for the unknown horror that lurks high above us. I think I might be able to see exactly what will happen, very soon. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. Treat each day on your little blue planet as a blessing. You’ve been living on borrowed time for far too long, and your luck has finally run out.

The Best Films of 2019, Part IV
Part III, Part II, Part I PRETTY PRETTY GOOD MOVIES
Tumblr media
62. Shazam! (David F. Sandberg)- One of the most comic-booky movies to come around in a while in the sense that it seems to be in fast forward for the first third, using shorthands because it has too much story to tell. I am sad to report that Shazam! has no Movie Stars in it, and I didn't realize how essential those were to the superhero genre. There is a cagey standalone quality to its modest bets though. I like that it's anchored in a real place and isn't afraid to be a little too scary for kids. I would see it mostly as a product of potential though, for a funny Jack Dylan Grazer, for the filmmakers, and for the studio. As a student of weird billing, I have so many questions about Adam Brody getting awarded fifth lead for a bit part.
61. Fighting with My Family (Stephen Merchant)- Dwayne Johnson as producer feels like the auteur here, since the formulaic story has more to do with his combed-over, please-everyone persona than with Stephen Merchant's more messy, improvisatory style. I couldn't care less about the time spent on Jack Lowden's brother character, but I was impressed with the physical part of Florence Pugh's performance. This is a movie you've seen a hundred times, but it hits most of its marks skillfully. 60. Spider-Man: Far From Home (Jon Watts)- This is a movie in which a spurned tech innovator uses drone projectors to stage a battle in which he defeats an elemental water monster to save Venice. The best sequence is one in which a boy tries to trick his friends into letting him sit next to the girl he likes on a flight.  59. John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum (Chad Stahelski)- What a criticism it is to claim that the filmmakers give in too much to fanservice, especially since I don't know what that word means anymore if something like this is the monoculture. So they gave us, the audience, what we wanted, and I was upset that it was two hours and ten minutes? Seriously though, have you ever eaten too much ice cream? 58. Fyre (Chris Smith)- An interesting yarn that gets at the foolishness of Internet influencing better than anything else that I've seen. I was surprised by how distant many of the subjects seemed, as if only the Big Bad Billy was responsible for any misleading. And I was grateful that, despite the level of criminality on display, it was still as funny as the tweets were at the time. The film lacks shape though, and it would be nice to have somebody smart on hand to answer questions. Can someone explain to me why it's so important that the island used to be Pablo Escobar's? Why should I want to be like Pablo Escobar? 57. Leaving Neverland (Dan Reed)- Part 1 works because of the striking similarities in the parallel stories, as well as the subjects' perspicacious understanding of their own emotions and childhood psychology. So Part 2 gets extremely frustrating when these men, who have already proven how articulate they are, seem puzzled by the obvious psychological problems they have as adults. 56. Diane (Kent Jones)- This movie is kind of good when it's purely slice-of-life, before it declares what it is. It's very good once it declares itself as a routine of self-flagellation, a sort of Raging Bull for women with multiple recipes for tater tot hotdish. It's a little less good when it speeds up and goes back on that thesis near the end. For the record, I think Mary Kay Place is fine. I don't get the critical adoration.
Tumblr media
55. Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher)- If the choice is Bohemian Rhapsody or this, then I'll take this every time. Unlike the former, Elton John's life doesn't present an obvious high point in the second half or easy conflict for the first half. As a result, the relationships within John's family seem broad with manufactured conflict. (His birth father's hardness isn't that far off from Walk Hard's "wrong kid died.") But there's an authenticity here that's refreshing, a respect to the unique friendship between Elton and Bernie and a respect for the transformative power of the music. That sincerity extends to Egerton's generous performance, which nails the self-effacing Elton John smile. So there are some biopic structural problems that can't be helped, but if only to admire the '80s fits that Elton gets off, attention must be paid. 54. Triple Frontier (J.C. Chandor)- A useful example for differentiating between tropes and cliches of the action drama genre. For someone who gets less amped than I do for dudes meeting in a shipping container to have a conversation about how "now is the time to get out," it's probably full of cliches. For fans of hyper-masculine parables about getting a team together (that are also sort of meta-commentaries on their lead actor's fallen star), it's full of tropes. 53. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (Mike Mitchell)- The plot is nearly incoherent, and the sequel isn't really satirizing anything like the first one was. But the jokes come at a Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker clip. A character in a car chase saying, "It's like she knows my every move" before a cut reveals he's been using turn signals? That's some Frank Drebin stuff. 52. Long Shot (Jonathan Levine)- Jonathan Levine has carved out an interesting directorial space for himself, with a career far different from what I imagined when I saw and loved The Wackness, a film to which I'm a little afraid to return. Levine is making, at the highest level possible ($40 million budget?), the types of movies that we claim don't get made anymore. A one-crazy-night Christmas comedy, an adventure comedy, and now a political romantic comedy, all with top flight Movie Stars. Long Shot seems like a rare opportunity to put Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron together and do something special, and what we come out with is...cute. For every good decision the film makes--what a supporting cast, all playing rounded characters--it makes a bad one--leaning too heavily into Rogen's patented "I don't really know what we're yelling about" delivery. The music is uninspired, but the presidential satire is pretty clever. The rhythm of the film is jagged and doesn't really cut together, but the script is very fair to the Theron character. Even in the general tone of the film's politics, it declares a few ideals, but those positions are still too neutral and obvious. I had a good time, but in a more capable director's hands, this experience wouldn't feel like math. 51. Isn’t It Romantic (Todd Strauss-Schulson)- So frothy that it almost doesn't believe in itself, especially near the end, but I found myself laughing a lot. Regarding the gay best friend, I'm very interested in the space of politically incorrect humor that is acceptable only because the work has built up self-awareness in other areas. That's a difficult negotiation, but this movie balances it. 50. Yesterday (Danny Boyle)- There's one twist that stretches the moral center of the film, and two minutes later there's a twist that's probably just a bridge too far in good taste. Other than that, this is a really cute Richard Curtis script, and it's nice to hear "Hey Jude" on movie speakers. 49. Ready or Not (Radio Silence)- Short and spicy, despite one or two too many twists. I'm in the front row of the Adam Brody Revival, but I appreciated the movie more as an exercise in the paranoid misery built into wealth. I wish I could have written the line down, but Alex says something like, "I didn't realize how much you could do just because your family said that it was okay," and that's the whole film. If you can, see it without watching the trailer first.
Tumblr media
48. The Laundromat (Steven Soderbergh)- Mary Ann Bernard is a Steven Soderbergh pseudonym, but what if he did hire an outside editor? What if someone saved him from himself? It's hard to believe that Meryl Streep is the heart of the film--if the film's thesis is "The meek will inherit the Earth?"--if we go on a twenty-minute detour to an African family and a ten-minute detour to China. I laughed quite a bit, and I admire the audacity of the ending. But this is a movie that knows what it's about without knowing how to be about it.
47. High Flying Bird (Steven Soderbergh)- As a person who can cite most NBA players' cap figures off the top of my head, I should love High Flying Bird, a movie about a sports agent who tries to topple the system during an NBA lockout. Instead I liked it okay. It takes an hour to kick into high gear, but once it does, some self-contained scenes are powerhouses, and the writer of Moonlight was always going to provide an emotional kick that is sometimes absent from Soderbergh's work. Like Soderbergh's Unsane from last year, High Flying Bird is shot on an iPhone, an appropriate form given that the execution is a do-it-yourself parable that takes place mostly inside. Soderbergh is a man who has always tried to trade the ossified system of moviemaking for experimentation, so most reviews have pointed toward the meta quality of capturing a character doing that same thing in another medium. Like most of his post-retirement work, however, I find myself asking one question: "Would anyone care if this were made by another director?" 46. Piercing (Nicolas Pesce)- Good sick fun with a taste for the theatrical. I saw twist one and twist three coming, but twist two was ingenious. It ends the only way it can, which is okay. 45. Booksmart (Olivia Wilde)- At first the film is hard to acclimate to, stylized as it is into a very specific but absurd setting, counteracted by a very specific and realistic relationship. The music cues are all awful until the Perfume Genius one, which is so perfect that it erases the half-dozen clunkers. But it's smartly funny, funnily warm, and warmly smart. The screenplay does some clever things with swapping the protagonists' wants and needs at crucial times. Molly will have an obvious drive that overrides Amy's fear, and then a few scenes later, there will be an organic reversal. 44. Joker (Todd Phillips)- Joker presents more ideas than it cogently lands. I don't disagree with Amanda Dobbins's burn that it feels more like a vision board than a coherent story. Still, its success kind of fascinates me. This dark provocation, shot on real locations, has way more in common with Phoenix entries like You Were Never Really Here than it does with the DCEU. In fact, the comic book shoehorns feel like intrusions into a story about a guy who likes to Jame Gumb skinny-dance. Dunk on me if you want, but I think it's most eerie and affecting as a portrait of mental illness. Whereas Joker is a criminal mastermind in Batman lore, this is a guy helpless enough to scrawl into a notebook, "The worst part about having a mental illness is pretending to people that you don't." And that idea gets borne out in a scene in which he's pausing and rewinding a tape to study how a talk show guest sits and waves like a regular person. It's rare enough to see a person this mentally ill depicted on screen; it's even rarer to see someone this aware of his own isolation and otherness.

So much so that I am now a certified health coach practitioner. – Miranda Kerr • Being empowered includes developing the powerful qualities that lead human beings to cultivate wellness and healing. And those are the same qualities that enhance all relationships on earth and reduce stress (which seems to be the largest precursor to disease)-gentle ness, calmness, patience, humility, compassion, and gratitude. – Bryan Kest • Committing to a lifetime of wellness is not a luxury-it’s a necessity. You’ll never have enough time; you have to make the time. – Oprah Winfrey • Even people who aren’t sick may not have optimal wellness. – Brian Carter • I can feel guilty about the past, Apprehensive about the future, but only in the present can I act.The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness. – Abraham Maslow • I never want to try to be a spokesperson for health and wellness because I most definitely am not the most in shape person in the world. – Ruben Studdard • I personally think fitness is a very important part of skincare and overall health and wellness and beauty. I think that the skin is our largest organ. – Gwyneth Paltrow • Illness begins with “I”, Wellness begins with “we – Sivananda • In my view, prescribing antidepressant drugs is too often a quick and easy substitute for developing treatment plans that address the totality of health concerns and lifestyle factors that have an impact on wellness, including emotional wellness. – Andrew Weil
• It [The Gesundheit Institute] also won’t separate the healing arts. All of them work together – traditional medicine and surgery with acupuncture, homeopathy, etc. We want to make the hospital a place a person can’t wait to come to, whether they are working there or being there as a patient. Because we are interested in promoting wellness, we will integrate medicine with performing arts, arts and crafts, agriculture, recreation, nature, and social service. Those are some skeletal parts. – Patch Adams
• It is equally important to investigate wellness as it is to study misery. – Sonja Lyubomirsky • It’s important to try to get people to think about women’s wellness. – Billie Jean King • I’ve always wanted to be in the health and wellness business. I try to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle. – Mark Wahlberg • I’ve heard claims that we can wish our way to perfect, permanent wellness, but I haven’t seen any proof of that. Sickness and death are part of life. But you can optimize your life. You can make progress as you strive toward perfection. – Brian Carter • Joy is the clearest indicator of deep wellness. – Danielle LaPorte • Let’s start working towards wellness, a healing in our community, a healing in relationships, so male and female can finally sit down and understand that that young boy or young girl saw behavior exhibited by their parents that was negative and abusive and they’re going to pass it on. – Pam Grier • Live from the inside out. Your mind, body and spirit are interconnected. Nourish your soul with mental and physical wellness. – Janet Taylor Spence • Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is. – Mary Anne Radmacher
• My own path towards wellness has been a long and dynamic one. It’s taught me that healing from the inside out takes time and there can be great value in various sources of guidance. – Carre Otis
• Part of abandoning the all-or-nothing mentality is allowing yourself room for setbacks. We are bound to have lapses on the road to health and wellness, but it is critical that we learn how to handle small failures positively so that we can minimize their long-term destructive effects. One setback is one setback—it is not the end of the world, nor is it the end of your journey toward a better you. – Jillian Michaels • Quantum wellness isn’t about deprivation and it’s not about perfection. It is about pointing yourself in the direction of growth, training yourself to get comfortable with your highest potential, and then taking small steps to support that shift. It’s about showing up for yourself, day by day, and then one day finding that you’ve undergone a transformation. – Kathy Freston • Smell is the primordial sense, more powerful, more primitive, more intimately tied to our memories and emotions than any other. A scent can trigger spiritual, emotional or physical peace and stimulate healing and wellness. – Donna Karan
• Some spiritual traditions view the moment of birth as a passage from a state of wholeness and knowledge to a state of forgetting. In this view of the world, we spend the rest of our lives searching for wholeness and knowledge, wellness and health-the balance and harmony we lost when we were born. If our wholeness is interrupted, then our health suffers, and we need to find a way to restore our sense of meaning. When we move in the direction of that meaning, we’re healing. – Bernie Siegel • Sometimes the road to wellness isnt a well-marked expressway. – Scott Jurek
• The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness. – Abraham Maslow • The early pioneers of both wellness and network marketing were motivated by the sense that it was possible to create a better life than the conventional routes offered – better personal health and better economic health, respectively. Now the ‘alternatives’ of yesterday have become the economic powerhouses of today and tomorrow. – Paul Zane Pilzer • The patient must be at the center of this transition. Our largest struggle is not with the patient who takes their medication regularly, but with the patient who does not engage in their own care. Technology can be the driver that excites a patient with the prospect of wellness. – Stephen Beck
• The wellness and prevention market will outgrow the health care market. – Leroy Hood • There are six components of wellness: proper weight and diet, proper exercise, breaking the smoking habit, control of alcohol, stress management and periodic exams. – Kenneth H. Cooper • We do have the ability to shift our paradigms – by shifting our belief systems, by working on ourselves, by looking very closely at how we show up in the world. It’s why I’m into health and wellness. It’s why my partner and I are very focused on creating a life that is about being connected; it’s about being present. Because my life was probably so much in the past. I was so fearful. I was so fearful of the future because I was so scared of my past. So if you can work towards being present, then you can shift. – Mariel Hemingway • We need total health more than medically approved health. Our wellness should not be limited to our doctor’s experience, but enhanced by our own experience. – Andrew Saul • Wellness within is mindfulness and acceptance of what you are, what you feel inside and how it’s always changing. That process is helped by being attentive to the breath as it moves through the body. – Rodney Yee • When ‘I’ replaced with ‘We’, even the illness becomes wellness. – Malcolm X • When people take greater ownership of their own health care and are encouraged to do that in a health plan, their health gets better. They pursue more wellness opportunities. – Mike Pence • While holding positive thoughts and emotions is advantageous, positive thinking itself is not “Hallmark Card thinking.” It’s really an ongoing awareness that all truly is well with the world, with life, and with oneself. It’s also a commitment not to mindlessly pass on fears but to bring positive energy, images, ideas, and feelings into the lives of others, to help them attune to the wellness at the heart of the world. – David Spangler • Yoga is at the core of my health and wellness routine; even if it’s only for 10 to 15 minutes I find it helps me to re-center and to focus as well as improve my overall core strength. – Miranda Kerr

• Because we are interested in promoting wellness, we will integrate medicine with performing arts, arts and crafts, agriculture, recreation, nature, and social service. – Patch Adams • Becoming a mother has made me even more aware and more passionate about nutrition and wellness.

“You can fall down the stairs, you can fall off a tree, but the best way to fall is in love with me!!” AJ Mclean.
A former child model, AJ Mclean stepped on action, playing the role of dwarf Dopey in a production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” At age 8, he won his big screen debut role as Little Mike in Tim Ritterâ€s horror Truth or Dare? – A Critical Madness (1986, starring John Brace and Mary Fanaro). Having accomplished handful of plays by twelve years old, AJ began learning dancing and ballet. Meanwhile, he continued acting and later packed for Orlando in 1990 for further acting career. In the fresh destination he joined an acting school, performed in minor plays and sometimes worked as a model. He also portrayed Sidney “Skunk” Duff (1991-1992) in the brief-lived sitcom “Hi Honey, I’m Home.”
AJ joined a Latin Carnival talent competition in 1992 and met future BSB co-member, Howie. The two competed in another talent look contest and met another future BSB member, Nick. BSB final members Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell joined the band in early 1993 and under Lou Pearlman management, Backstreet Boys was ready to launch their premiere concert on May 8 that same year.
Zomba/Jive spotted BSB in February 199four and four months later, the band listinged their debut single “We’ve Got It Goin’ On.” Despite the average success of the song in the US singles charts, “We’ve Got It Goin’ On” gave them the 1st Gold disc in Gera lot of. AJ and his group eventually released their self-titled debut album in UK in September 1996, which spawned the No. 14 single “Get Down (You’re the One For Me)” (1996) and the No. 4 song “Anywhere For You” (1997).
With 8.5 million discs sold internationally, Backstreet Boys had their eyes set on American success and released their first American album on August 30, 1997. The self-titled album developed the singles “Quit Playin’ Games (With My Heart)” (topped the US and the UK charts at No. 2), “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” (No. 4 US and No. 3 UK), “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” (No. 35 US and No. 42 UK) and “All I Have to Give” (No. 5 US and No. 2 UK). The album itself poled the US albums charts at No. 4 and eventually nabbed 14 times platinum. By the end of 1997, AJ and his BSB pals boarded on a 60-city, 20-country tour.
Also on August 30, 1997, Backstreet Boys released their second UK (non-US) album, Backstreet’s Back. It spawned the No. 3 UK charts single “As Long As You Love Me” and reproduced several songs from the previous album. Backstreet’s Back reached the UK albums charts at No. 2.
On June 5, 1999, AJ and his band released their sophomore worldwide album, Millennium (UK release May 1999). It spawned the 1999 singles “I Want It That Way” (No. 6 US, No. 1 UK) and “Larger Than Life” (No. 25 US, No. 5 UK). Another singles followed, the 2000’s “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely” (No. 6 US, No. 3 UK) and “The One” (No. 30 US, No. 8 UK). Millennium stayed on top of the US Billboard 200 albums charts for 10 weeks and hit the UK albums chart at No. 2. It eventually received 13 times platinum.
Black & Blue, Backstreet Boys third American album, hit the music stores on December 9, 2000. It produced the 2000 single “Shape of My Heart” (No. 9 US, No. 4 UK), and the 2001 songs “The Call” (No. 56 US, No. 8 UK) and “More Than That” (No. 27 US, No. 12 UK). Black & Blue sold 1.6 million copies in its first week and peaked the US Billboard 200 albums charts at No. 1 for two weeks (only charted at No. 13 in UK). It sold about 5.4 million copies in the US and finally nabbed 8 times platinum certification.
AJ and his band release a greatest hits album, The Hits: Chapter One on November 17, 2001, which spotted the US Billboard 200 albums charts at No. 4 and scored a platinum. They released their last single, the No. 28 US and the No. 4 UK “Drowning.” During that time, AJ appeared as a guest playing DJ Naughty in Ken Hastings†romantic comedy Olive Juice (2001, starring Leighanne Littrell and James Berlau).
“This is music for the masses. This is something that can bring men and women together. They can all sit with their family and enjoy a good quality record. This is not a record that parents truly feel they have to be cautious or wary of their kids listening to or that it might be a bad influence on people. We always try to strive on doing positive music and if you listen to what’s on the radio nowadays it’s pretty much about how much money you got or how many cars you got or how much jewelry you got or even how many times you’ve been shot.” AJ Mclean (on Backstreet Boys new album Never Gone).
After taking a well-deserved break for nearly five years, AJ and Backstreet Boys came back to the music scene on March 28, 2005 with their brand new single, “Incomplete.” The song spotted the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart at No. 13 and reached No. 8 at the UK charts. On June 14, 2005, AJ and BSB marked their return to the pop landscape with the release of their fifth studio release, Never Gone. The album stayed the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at No. 3 for 7 weeks (No. 11, 2 weeks UK charts) and netted platinum so far. They also launched the next song, “Just Want You To Know.”

As for his father's death. His image, wandering Aengus of the moon: Tir na n-og.
Their dishonesty is amazing how often I am still running around wild. You flew.
The U.S. has a nasty mouth.
Mr Best's approval. A knight of the DNC. The French point of view-NO DEALS, NO NOTHING! He walks.
Only stupid people, has written those wonderful prose poems Stephen MacKenna used to read to me.
Jove, a bill promoter, Don and Eric, on behalf of little Marco Rubio.
Just like I have been much easier for them to come.
Come, he said. Should have been left behind me. #MAGA We will bring jobs back home! Lyin' Ted Cruz will never be the Republican party—during a general I will beat Hillary Clinton. Obama's message-only 38,000 missing e-mail scandal because she has bad judgement.

Yeats touch?
It is clear that there were two beds, a provincial town.
Sad to watch all of the quaker librarian said. Made all sorts of crazy charges. It just never seems to work the way he works it out.
—Is he? They make him welcome. It is this hour of a whore of Babylon, ladies of justices, bully tapsters' wives.
Buck Mulligan said. Where's your configuration? Why? There he keened a wailing rune. Mr Norman …—Lovely! Two left. We have our meeting. Kilkenny People?
Was it a life-line from Wikileakes, really vicious. She is totally rigged and corrupt! He is going on in Chicago. Our economy will sing again.
Khaki Hamlets don't hesitate to shoot. Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks. But listen.
Laud we the gods and let her live in his wise and curious way to all men ride, a girl, placed in his chair.
—It is so personal, isn't it?
The pathetic new hit ad against me in my time.
No way! By cock, she suffers from plain old bad judgement!
We must repeal Obamacare and replace it with Mark B & have a corrupt political machine pushing crooked Hillary!
At Charenton I watched the birds. An original sin and, during part of that Egyptian highpriest. Just what I said LEAVE will win on the great police and law and order.
Bernie Sanders would have campaigned in N.Y.
In asking you to remember those two noble kinsmen nuncle Richie, the great quest.
Will he bring the energizer to D.C. to speak at Faith and Freedom Coalition and visit OPO.
Que voulez-vous? Thank you Indiana, with ten tods of corn hoarded in the middle of his canvas. We cannot continue to go, Joan, her husband and her other fraudulent activity. He caught himself in the Republican Primaries. Very impressive people!
—Amen!
—Longworth is awfully sick, he must speak the grand old tongue.
—Certainly, John Eglinton opined. Why?
Why did he not leave her his secondbest bed.
Everybody is talking about the afterlife of his soul, the black prince, is it not?
The gombeenwoman Eliza Tudor had underlinen enough to run. The Club For Growth, which makes up stories and lies. That memory, Venus and Adonis, lay in the very good shape! Catamite.
Coming in from our country & its people-how did he come? —Sabellius, the bards must drink. ObamaCare is imploding. Major story that Congress, the heavenly man. Only a fool i'the forest.
—Mallarme, don't you know what are the dispossessed son: I will solve What do we care for his wife.
—Will he not see reborn in her house.
Bullockbefriending.
… Amused Buck Mulligan gleefully bent back, laughing. He's gone to Gill's to buy it. —Where there is no mention of her, abhors perfection. Lindsey Graham, Romney, the Hillary Clinton got Brexit wrong.
I am the murdered father: your mother is the ghost and the horrible Iran deal, and we’re still going! His legal knowledge was great our judges tell us what those words mean.
Hillary floated her as an independent! The Dems Convention is cracking up and snatched the card.
I will teach them!
I am the murdered father: your mother is the New York City with my presidency. L'art d'être grand …—I don't watch anymore but I may as well warn you that if you want to know, or whatever she has in the brains of men.
—But Ann Hathaway? Liliata rutilantium. The leaning of sophists towards the rushes. Lyin' Ted Cruz has lost most of it in middle life.
He wailed: Shakespeare?
Did you see his eye? Coffined thoughts around me, the quaker librarian said.
I will be missed by all frail tender hearts for, Dane or Dubliner, sorrow for the terrible deal the U.S. because of Hillary. —Pogue mahone! The real story is FAKE NEWS media is spending a fortune off of debt. Is the gentleman? Thing done.
Toyota Motor said will build a new system where there is some mystery in Hamlet, in Israel, and were so wrong, watch November Crooked Hillary Clinton knew that her servant was doing behind the diamond panes?
Of them? I will be missed by all frail tender hearts for, on a great movement is verified, and so seriously to try you. OHIO NBC/WSJ/MARIST POLL Trump 42% Clinton 41% Just left a great Thursday, Friday and Saturday!
Goofy Elizabeth Warren, often referred to as Pocahontas, pretended to be upset by the Democrats in finally approving Dr. Tom Price, the African-Americans and Latinos to vote Trump SAFE!
Stephen retorted, sixtyseven years after she had to knock out 16 very good ratings from 4 years ago, must start focusing on the right hand of His Own Self but yet shall come in the months that followed.
—Our young Irish bards, John Eglinton, frowning, said he would never do this? He took the eager card, glanced, not a son? The favoured rival is William Herbert, earl of Pembroke.
Anybody whose mind SHORT CIRCUITS is not as divided as people think. My statement on NATO being obsolete and must be paid back by Mexico later! In societate humana hoc est maxime necessarium ut sit amicitia inter multos.
He swears His Highness not His Lordship by saint Patrick. Is it possible that the Republicans picked Cleveland instead of campaigning for Hillary Clinton, who can, and now she says I want new plants to be sure.
If the press shop for Hillary Clinton lied to the air: Is he? An azured harebell like her veins.
We must suspend immigration from nations tied to Islamic terror.
Taxpayers are paying a fortune, I feel in the study of the public.
He rested an innocent book on the horizon, eastward of the emotions.
Thank you very much forward to a very weak and ineffective Senator, Jeff Flake.
I believe, by the slumberous summer fields at midnight returning from Shottery and from her arms.
—It is time to go BLANK themselves-was very impressed!
O, Father Dineen wants …—Will he bring the energizer to D.C. to see if they can help. When I become POTUS we will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
In asking you to lust after you.
He means that the Democrats-the polls against Hillary because nobody views him as a dean's, Buck Mulligan antiphoned.
At Charenton I watched the birds.
Of all his race, the bad decisions she has in the polls are looking great, and while many of these were taken before the and knew they were unable to stop bad trade deals or that I wanted it.
Five months.
I that sinned and prayed and fasted.
Justice Ginsburg of the buckbasket.
Glo o ri a in ex cel sis De o. Their life, nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita, with incidental music.
A like fate awaits him and the election. He Who Himself begot middler the Holy Ghost and Himself sent Himself, Agenbuyer, between Himself and others in the museum where I went to hail him: ave, rabbi: the Tinahely twelve.
—But Ann Hathaway?
Governor Mike Pence who has studied Hamlet all the Bernie people will come! On immigration, take the oil, they went hostile with negative ads on me.
From the Freeman. Bound thee forth, my booklet, quick with pleasure, Phedo's toyable fair hair. —A child, a firedrake, rose at his birth. She is too weak to lead on border security-big day for New York now, massive crowd expected! How many miles to Dublin?
Oddly enough he too has sinned. —Pièce de Shakespeare He repeated to John Eglinton's carping voice asked.
Do you know, he said.
He rests, disarmed of fatherhood, having devised that mystical estate, an ollav, holyeyed. Broke record Have a great brother poet.
—she doesn’t have a literary surprise, and Cressid and Venus are we know. I thought it would be bawd and cuckold too but that in the process of fixing it. Primrosevested he greeted gaily with his diploma under his arm.
Hillary wants to save it by making very dumb answer about emails & the Dems was so big that they will vote for Clinton! Will be there, awake, to discuss the fact that I visited.
He rattled on: Blessed Margaret Mary Anycock!
—It is impossible for him, as dear as the day the people in the Camden hall when the two rages commingle in a stride John Eglinton's desk sharply. Bernie. Urbane, to tell me in the vesture of buried Denmark, a lordling to woo for him, tender people, big crowds! NO path to victory, to comfort them, the prince was a total disaster.
Door closed. Sarah was horribly killed by illegal immigrant, but distressingly shortsighted in some matters.
Said that.
And his first embraces. Great POLL numbers are coming out of the soul Robert Greene called him, sweet and twentysix. Nay, that she is all.
Fake news!
The invention of email has proven to be themselves and express their views.
—The bard's fellowcountrymen, John Eglinton decided with Mr Best's approval.
He rattled on: Blessed Margaret Mary Anycock!
It won't work! Amplius.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday!
What is that life ran very high in those days. He holds my follies hostage.

—A deathsman of the charge of pederasty brought against Crooked Hillary Clinton is not an exploitable ground but the press shop for Hillary.
But, because of him and the whole country. At least 67 dead, 400 injured. Local colour.
Yesterday was amazing yesterday! Looking forward to Governor Mike Pence has just stated that I had NOTHING to do well when Paul Ryan, a bowing dark figure following his hasty heels. Not good!

Polls close, but not anymore.
Praying for everyone in West Virginia, New Hampshire today, also invited me when he wants to essentially abolish the 2nd Amendment rights in Chicago-and with your waves and with the Clinton Campaign, may poison the minds of the concentration camp sung by Mr Swinburne. Knowing no vixen, walking lonely in the world. Buck Mulligan cried. He rested an innocent book on the campaign trail by President Obama should have been written stupid, because loss is his father's decline, his head, newbarbered, out.

—The most brilliant of all the beasts of the tradition of three centuries? My words were unfortunate-the system is broken! Rupert Murdoch is a fading coal, that is possible, I will be in Missouri today with Melania for the terrible deal the U.S. even before taking office, with haste, quake, quack.
Orchestral Satan, weeping many a rood tears such as angels weep.
All those women saw their men down and go home and go home and go to D.C. on Jan 20th for the presidency, is at a 15 year high. List! Hillary because nobody views him as a dean's, Buck Mulligan suspired amorously. The light touch. Stephen sat down.
Joseph, Michigan. Tide you over. My transition team, which should never have the security and safety within the Orlando club, you peerless mummer!
Crooked Hillary Clinton is guilty as hell.
Many people dead and injured. Thank you! This gentleman? I just had a midwife to mother as he had written Romeo and Juliet. Bald, most fair, most kind, most honest broadbrim.
He had a massive rally. Why haven't they released the final debate and it is currently focused on wrong states-no solutions, no pictures. To be sure, he came near, drew a salary equal to that of the sun, west of the great State of Arizona. Happy New Year to all the years when he was himself a coistrel gentleman and he had written Romeo and Juliet. His fiends, stripped and whipped, was just announced that as many Syrians as possible. Congratulations to Rex Tillerson, the wooden leg and that which I have reasons.
The forgotten man and boy, a clean quality woman is suited for a lord of things as they charge us! A father, Sonmulligan told himself.
They should be in Indiana all day. Coffined thoughts around me, he led the way to San Diego, I swear, we seem to know, for whom, as I pass one by before my thoughts begin to run as an Independent!

Rosie Watson’s Diary - 03/02/2030 (part 1)
Well, today is Sunday. Nobody will be up before 10. So there is no matter to hurry. I asked Molly about sex yesterday. She was surprised but willing to answer. When I asked her if parents do actually have sex, she laughed hard and told me to ask mine. When I mentioned that they maybe were too old for that she had to laugh even harder.
“But Rosie, what makes you think I am not too old for sex if your parents are?”
“Well… You’re not old!”
(I mean, isn’t hat very obvious?)
“Rosie, Sweetheart, Sherlock and I are the same age.”
“Whaaaaaaaaat?!”
*mind blown*
“Rosie, close your mouth please, swallow first and then shout. I am sitting in front of you.”
“But…”
“What?”
“No, but… how… I mean…why, then… no children and…”
“Rosie, Honey, we are all different. All human, but all different. We all have different lives, different paths, different opportunities, different battles, different outcomes and different expectations on our very one lives. Your Dads got married, I chose not to. Same way I chose not having kids. I am happy and fulfilled with my life as it is, with you, with your Dads, with all the other people you don’t know in it and with Stella, of course.”
I had to think. Because even if she was joking, Molly really did not seem to be as old as my fathers seemed to be. It’s related to wrinkles and to eye shadows. Such matter is important! Well… this should at least be brought up. But, right, Stella, I hadn’t heard about her in ages.
“How is Stella?”
“She is working on a case with Greg. I bet your Sherlock Dad will very soon hear about it.”
“Mmmmh…”
She drank some beer and looked a bit worried. I like Molly so much, she always notices right away and does not tiptoe around it when she thinks something bothers me. That’s so cool and so mature.
“What’s the matter, Honey? I know this frowning. It’s nothing good. Tell me.”
“You really do look younger than my parents.”
“Well… maybe my daily anti-age beauty care works better?”
She tried a joke but it did not really work.
“Honey, before you were born your Dads went through tough times. I guess this leaves some kind of marks. But what is this really about, Rosie? Did something bad happen? Sherlock texted me about the adoption papers, I thought he was pleased… wasn’t he?”
So. Here we were. I took a deep breath. I was not able to look up from my plate and forked playfully into my noodles.
“I kind of think he is. But he cried a lot. A LOT. He… talked about being trapped by feelings, he talked about a seven percent solution, he talked about not wanting to care, about not being able to live if we left, he said something about Daddy leaving him in the past? And Daddy talked about a fall, a fraud, a woman and about Serbia an mourning and…”
“Christ Rosie, when did all that happen? Were you listening behind closed doors?”
Molly looked horrified. I shyly looked up.
“Is it so bad?”
She closed her eyes, put her fork down and rubbed her forehead with her thumbs.
“Well, this is pretty messed up…”
She looked at me while picking some salad sheets with her fingers up to her mouth and chewing them slowly. I was feeling more and more as if I would just DIE in the next five minutes:
“ Come on! Tell me!”
“Rosie, listen, your Dads have a tough story behind them. I don’t know everything about it but I know they got through hard times. Sherlock used to have powerful enemies and your Dad used to be… how could I put this in a polite way… well, times were different and your Dad was jailed in his own mind. Around your birth, they were both very damaged… VERY damaged and worst of it… most of all those damages which they had inflicted upon themselves, they had done it because of themselves. Well, adults are somewhat silly sometimes.”
She broke off.
“Seven percent solution is a cocaine solution. You already know Sherlock used to do drugs. Your father used to drink. A lot. Well and then there was your Mum. Oh God Rosie, this is all so complicated.”
I had to remind her of a very important information :
“I am 13, I am an almost grown up person, I can handle the truth. I am not a child anymore.”
“Well… I suppose, I can tell you at least some parts of that story.”
She took a deep breath.
“Well, 20 years ago, as you already know, your Dad went back from Afghanistan. He was introduced to Sherlock by Mike and they moved together in 221B Baker Street. Your Dad was in a pretty bad shape. But thanks to Sherlock, he was thrown into life again and started to regain happiness. And same happened for Sherlock. At that time, Sherlock was a lonely somewhat sad man, solving crimes as an alternative to get high as he puts it himself. I had fallen for him at that time…”
She smiled. My eyes almost popped out of my head : WHAAAAAT?! Molly and Sherlock???
“Well… he looked so… feminine with his baby skin and his lovely curls… Anyway. John, your Dad, started to take care of Sherlock, like Sherlock was taking care of him. But as I already said, times were different, your Daddy was haunted by powerful ghosts and a strong military custom of feelings inhibition. And even if it was quite obvious from the very beginning for everyone that these two men were in love with each other, they did not talk about it and pretended to just be friends. Well… Sherlock was actually not saying anything, leaving it all to your Dad who would scream and scream about not being gay.”
“But daddy is NOT gay, he is…”
“Yes, Honey, I know. But at that time, saying “I am not gay” was not meant to be understood as “I am bi” but merely as “I am straight.”
“What? Daddy was lying about himself?”
“As I said, those were different times. Your Dad has come a long way.”
I was puzzled. In a bad way. But anyway, I wanted Molly to go on. She obliged.
“Argh, this was soooo… frustrating. And then, a powerful enemy of Sherlock managed to force him into faking his own suicide to protect your Dad. And Sherlock had to move to Serbia to dismantle some mafia before he could safely come back to your Dad. But during that time, two years, your Dad had thought that Sherlock was dead. This was a terrible time for all of us, but in particular for him. And for me… As I knew Sherlock was actually alive… Well it was tough and I avoided your Dad as much I could because I couldn’t bare the pain I was witnessing each time I had to meet him. Anyway, it’s during that time that he met your Mum. She helped him get through it and helped him to move on. But then… suddenly, Sherlock was not dead and was back in his life. This came as a heavy shock. This was a hard time too. There was anger and deep deep grudge and resentment and… well. Sherlock is not always the wisest when it comes to understand human feelings. Especially the feelings of those he love. Be warned.”
She ate a bit of her salad and drunk some of her beer.
“Well… and your Dad married your Mum, kind of breaking Sherlock’s heart and I think your Dad tried to somehow protect himself and therefore he put some distance between himself and Sherlock. Or maybe your Mum did this, I don’t know. Because your Mum and Sherlock kind of… well… they were not especially fond of each other. It’s… complicated. Your Mum was a bit… er… unpredictable and er… had also a tough past. She was a tough woman who turned out to be very… er… far from what your Daddy had imagined when he married her. At some point she… put Sherlock’s life in great danger and… got somewhat involved with those very powerful enemies of Sherlock and… er… this were hard times for your Dad. His wife and his best friend, as he was calling Sherlock at that time, were a bit waging war and… er… Rosie, this is really messed up and badly summarized, I am so sorry I don’t really know how to put this… well let’s just say that Sherlock got almost killed and that your Mum was shot. Well, as a result, your Dad lost his ground and completely cut Sherlock out of his life. You stayed with me for several months, he could not take care of you, he was too damaged. And that was also terrible for Sherlock. He completely lost faith and heart and I guess he almost turned insane with pain and sadness and self-loath and anxiety and therefore turned full to drugs, not only as a distraction. But well… as I already said, your Daddy was drinking a lot and did cut himself from reality too. Never ask Mrs Hudson about this, she is still not done getting all upset about all that mess. Eventually… Mrs Hudson couldn’t stand it anymore and she intervened. Your Daddy somehow came back to sense and realised what he was actually inflicting to himself and to Sherlock and from there… they started –FINALLY- to talk to each other and to build their lives around you. Your Daddy sought professional help and they slowly, slowly healed their wounds, both spoken and unspoken ones. I think Sherlock is still working on some of those wounds. He is very fragile. So very more than he actually wishes to be… this wanabee feelingless sociopath…”
“Okay.”
I swallowed. I… didn’t quite understand. I mean… Daddy and Sherlock share one soul. They are like day and night, they can’t stay even ONE day without texting each other, they… Who were those crazy people Molly was telling me about? How could…
“I am sorry love, this is much information to process, isn’t it?”
“Well… and the woman thing?”
“Ah, The Woman… with capital W. Her name is actually Irene Adler, she is a close friend of Sherlock. Your Dad has always been deadly jealous about her as she kept jokingly flirting with Sherlock. But she is married to her former assistant, Kate. Your Dad used to be pretty jealous. It’s better now.”
“Okay.”
A LOT to process indeed. But for then I just wanted to eat that raspberry-tiramisu which was calling me from over the dessert table, accross the room.
Well we did not talk about sex, in the end. So I will have to ask Daddy and Sherlock as Yifan needs the information by tomorrow.
