Noroi no yakata: Chi o suu me (Lake of Dracula, 1971)
"Kyusaku... why did you do that to me yesterday?"
"What do you mean, Miss? What did I do?"
"Who was the stranger I saw here the night before? Who was it?"
"My master."
"Master? But I know your master well."
"He's changed."

International Women’s Day - Pay Attention to the Magademy Award Female Nominees
I haven’t really talked about this, but last year, a Japanese digital bookstore called BookLive started a cool yearly awards event held in March called the Magademy Awards. They nominate a good number of noteworthy male and female manga characters in leading and supporting roles from a wide variety of series.
For International Women’s Day today, I hope manga readers pay attention to the female side because they certainly are more interesting than most of the mainstream female anime characters that are often labeled as “best girl” types.
I’ll start with the 2021 female nominees and the winners (listed in bold) for the two categories.
Best Leading Actress 2021
Hayame Katsuragi (Promise Cinderella) - From what I heard, she’s a very cool character who really is righteous even after going through some rough circumstances. Yoi Takiguchi (In The Clear Moonlight Dusk) - A standout female character from one of shojo’s hottest artists, Mika Yamamori. Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) - One of my favorite heroines of the past decade. Mao Mao (The Apothecary Diaries: The Palace Cloister Mystery-Solving Notebook of Mao Mao) - I’ll be reading this series soon. Yona (Yona of The Dawn) - The winner of the award and I know she’s so beloved by fans of the anime and manga.
Best Supporting Actress 2021
Yoko Sato (The Fable) - An absolute badass. I love that she cares about getting men interested in her drunk beyond belief. Yua Takahashi (Tomorrow I Will Be Someone's Girlfriend) - This is a shojo I’m very interested in reading given the critical reception I heard about this series. Shinobu Wakamiya (Chihayafuru) - The winner of the award and she has a unique look to go along with her determined personality.
And now here are the 2022 nominees in the female character categories.
Best Leading Actress 2022
Mitsumi Iwakura (Skip and Loafer) - On my to-read list after hearing what a lovable and endearing dork she is from manga bloggers/reviewers. Marin Kitagawa (My Dress-Up Darling) - She’s a very well-written character and her facial expressions are amazing. Hitori Goto (BOCCHI THE ROCK!) - She’s become quite the internet darling, but I feel that she truly speaks for a generation of introverts who are trying their best. Mao Mao (The Apothecary Diaries) - She might win the award this time. Inori Yuitsuka (Medalist) - I know a certain manga blogger who has been raving about this series.
Best Supporting Actress 2022 (will update this section with the winner once they’re announced)
Ai Haibara (Case Closed) - I know there are Detective Conan fans who are excited about this. Fern (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) - The perfect sidekick for Frieren. Raika (Don't Call it Mystery) - I’m really glad the manga got licensed in the U.S., so I can get to learn about characters like her.
I hope more fans learn more about the Magademy award ceremony for years to come (if they can continue) because there’s a good mix of past, present, and future female characters that will tackle anyone’s fancy. There’s definitely great female characters in mainstream anime, but manga offers a more diverse variety of female characters who have amazing stories worth reading over and can’t always easily be told in anime or live-action.
Let’s definitely give an award to a Japanese bookstore that seems to know and award good taste in female characters.

CHAPTER 3.5.1 DANCE WITH ME
You might have expected it to happen this time. You wake up out of nowhere in a different place entirely. Where had Enma taken you this time?
Whatever's coming next couldn't possibly be goo--there's something in the corner of your eye. You can't follow it, but you can see enough. A green bar? And a blue bar below it. Your name is displayed right above them. Why is there--?
You notice now that you're in a church. You're not even sure there's a church like this in Akihabara, but anything's possible there, you suppose. There are people around you who seem to have awoken in the same situation as you have, sitting in the pews in the middle of a sermon that just finished. You recognize none of them.
A snapping sound, and the priest disappears. Replaced by a nun with a familiar face--Mika Katsuragi's face. Enma's come to mess with you again.
"Greetings, hanyou children! Welcome to Gavilland!" There's no such thing as Gavilland in Akiba, you're sure. Enma giggles and makes a peace sign. "I've transported you into a fantasy world!"
She's uh. She's done what now

Chi o suu bara (Evil of Dracula, 1974)
"If the devil is to exist in this world, it cannot look like a devil. It must be in disguise. It must live in the disguise of an ordinary human being."
#chi o suu bara#evil of dracula#japanese cinema#dracinema#horror film#michio yamamoto#ei ogawa#masaru takesue#toshio kurosawa#mariko mochizuki#kunie tanaka#shin kishida#katsuhiko sasaki#mio ôta#mika katsuragi#keiko aramaki#yûnosuke itô#yasuko agawa#midori takei#haruo suzuki#tadao futami#the last in Yamamoto's loose trilogy of vampire movies; this is also the one I enjoyed most‚ with perhaps the most successful translation#of the atmosphere and aesthetic of classic gothic horror cinema into 70s Japanese filmmaking. genuinely one of the best attempts to capture#the difficult concept of 'modern gothic'‚ but this film nails it; there's some great imagery here (white roses turned suddenly blood red‚#the vampire attacks with their unnatural gliding motion and fixed leers) and despite the splatter and the horror this is a weirdly romantic#film. not without issues (while the supernatural vampire romance is dreamy and affecting‚ the protagonists romance between student and#teacher is kind of skeevy) but the overall effect is of a dreamlike and weirdly moving film with highly likeable leads#fun to see the ever wonderful kunie tanaka outside of a yakuza film‚ and mariko mochizuki was immediately the most interesting and most#empathetic of the various students so i was pleased when she ended up being this films version of the final girl. genuinely a good time and#doesn't require any knowledge or experience of the previous two films to enjoy
