Right @judasiskariot - I said it'd bring you comfort after your horrible appointment, so here is the short sequel to Blue Seas.
A little angst in there, a little... well, its comfort and slice of life. (1250 words)

Three months. That���s exactly how long it has been since Robert Chase came into your life and swept you off your feet. A whirlwind of appointments, dates, nights spent in each other’s arms, early mornings where you’ve woken to find him gone. You’re trapped in the rips of the Great Ocean Road, your head above water, but only just as you’re blinded by golden sunlight.
Your regular appointments were now back with the original doctors, the older men who liked the sounds of their own voices, opinionated, old-fashioned, dismissive. A conflict of interests is what had been explained to you, and yet on the days where he could, Chase had joined you. He hadn’t questioned the treatments, or the language used. He’d not even spoke during some sessions, and yet you’d noticed how the interactions in those sterile chambers had changed. No longer was your voice dismissed – simply hormones, loose some weight, rest and drink more water – No, now investigations were being started, referrals made, progress. An unwritten agreement of the generations, of the profession.
Another migraine, another fever. Dating a doctor would never be easy, especially with your immune system, but you’d taken the chance, and he had been the perfect one to have around. You got sick; he doted. Hell, it was another excuse to wrap up in the warm blankets and rest your head on his lap as you were both too tired to follow the movie picked out. What with the Christmas season looming over you both, was it time for Die Hard or a return to your childhood with the Muppets?
Chase hadn’t spoken about going home to Melbourne for the holidays. You’d asked curiously but been met with mumbled excuses about how Christmas was the worst time to travel, how he was needed at the hospital, how he’d like to spend the time with you and you alone. The warm touch to your cheek, a strand of hair pushed behind your ear. You knew there was something more behind his excuses, but you wouldn’t push the issue, simply accepting the gentle kiss to your lips, the aroma of saltwater surrounding you both, another wave dragging you further away from the shore.

You’re tired that evening as you stir the pot over the hob, lost in thought over the day’s events. The scent of spices fills the air, a woman’s voice carries from the speakers in the background, another evening where his long hours make you question everything. Maybe it’s the season, maybe it’s your exhaustion, maybe it’s the unfortunately relatable lyrics of the songstress, but your heart feels heavy. Sometimes a dull ache, other times as if full to bursting with the sea water filling your lungs, pressing against it. Is it love or a panic attack?
You shake your head, the sound of the apartment door clicking shut, the light footsteps coming down the hallway. You feel his warm arms wrap around your waist, pulling you close, an unshaved jaw nestled into your neck as a heated breath warms your flesh. Not a panic attack, you think to yourself as your eyes close and you hear his whispered words.
“Smells good…”
“Hopefully tastes as good, too.”
You turn in his arms, your eyes meeting the pale blues you fell for so long ago. He seems worn, dark rims under the endless seas. You bring your hand to his cheek, a thumb delicately traced under his eye. He leans into your touch as if searching for something, all the comfort he has given you, maybe? This is not about sex. You can tell by the way his hands cling to you, the life raft in the storm, that this is different. You follow his lead, as he buries his face into the crook of your neck, as he falls into silence. The pot simmers, the music fades out. You hold each other. Two tattered souls hiding from the beating waves.
“Tough day?” you ask quietly.
“Lost a patient,” he mumbles back, a hint of detachment in his tone.
What can you say to that? I’m sorry is all you can mouth as you run your hand through his hair, stroking it softly, just like your mother would when you were sick as a child. Chase seems to embrace this as if it’s been too long for such a sensation, an experience missed, a childlike longing that almost brings him to tears.
He will not show that side, though. You’ve seen the artefacts around his apartment, heard the half stories of his failed marriage, his father’s death, his spiral trying to find a release, a comfort, and you won’t press it. You know from experience that healing takes time. All you can do is be there for him, as he is for you.
He straightens up with a deep breath. “I’m going to grab a shower.”
You can only let him go, his strong arms sliding from your hips as he leaves. Are you cold because he’s gone or because of the light snowfall dancing outside the windowpane?

Home Alone had always been a favourite of yours, but Chase had a way of making it even better. Each injury was met with a criticism of how it should’ve been treated, of the actual fatalities that could come with a blowtorch to the head, and you’d laughed with every comment.
“You just don’t switch off, do you?” you chuckle, a smile lingering on your face.
“I’m just saying, a third-degree burn like that will not be easy to just walk off.”
“Should I put something else on?”
“Nah, it’s getting to the good bit.”
He tries his best to stay quiet after that, but you see the cogs turning, the mental notes being written as to what body part was taking damage, medication to prescribe, survival rates.
“Contrecoup…” he mutters aloud without realising.
Before he has a chance to stop you, your lips are on his. To silence his commentary or fast forward to how these nights usually end, you don’t care. All you know is that the snow is coming down heavier outside, and with it you seek warmth. Your hands find the hem of his shirt, the toned abdomen underneath, the curve of his navel you’ll trace your tongue over should he so wish it.
Chase doesn’t stop you; he doesn’t want it to stop. He wants you to pull him from riptide, to save him from drowning, to bring him back to shore. Frantic hands find your body. Quickening breaths turn to muffled moans.
The storm rages and you are in the eye of it.

It’s Christmas Day, and Chase is working. You watch as he buttons his shirt, considering for a moment if you could tempt him to stay. Your fingers would delicately remove the cotton from him again. You’d lure him back to bed with promises of gifts if he’d been a good boy this year. He’d smirk and get a gift, even if he hadn’t been.
Instead, as you huddle beneath the sheets, smiling to yourself at the things you do to one another, he plants a kiss on your forehead, lingering a little longer than expected. The storm has calmed; the waves lap along the shore, and you don’t realise what he’s whispered until it’s too late and the apartment door has closed.
