First Encounter

The Stations’ first interaction with other Cybertronians was entirely unplanned. The trade ship Daunting Light had one of the more adventurous crews among the Station population, more willing than most to follow through unconfirmed suggestions and act upon gut instinct. They had been skirting the edges of the common Station trade routes looking for very specific parts needed to repair several deteriorating mecha back at the stations. The parts themselves were hard enough to make, but the fact that the metal required was rare to boot was like a kick to the stomach. They were getting prepared to buy a bunch of items with small quantities of the necessary materials in them to get the metals in time, even though they weren’t sure it would be enough to even help two mecha, when a very reliable merchant said that they knew some traders stationed just outside of the Starioners’ galaxy who sold what the Daunting Light was looking for. Curious and in need, the Daunting Light followed the merchant’s directions to an intergalactic trade post situated just at the edge of 3 separate galaxies. The Stationers were introduced to more species there than they had seen in a good few centuries. The trader they were looking for was a Decepticon.

First impressions were a bit spotty. The first Starioner to find the mech had an Autobot emblem clearly shining on his chest while a 5th flier with his numbers proudly painted in bold white on his breast trailed behind wearing a damaged Decepticon emblem that caught light that it past as his shoulders swung with his gait. To the Decepticon’s optics, that didn’t paint a pretty picture. An Autobot trailed by a Decepticon with serial numbers on him? It looked, to anyone who knew about the Autobot-Decepticon conflict, like a poorly veiled picture of slavery. Not at all veiled, actually.

Understandably, when the ‘Autobot’ waltzed up cheerfully to the Decepticon’s booth asking for parts and metal, the ‘Con’s mood chilled to sub-zero and they hiked the price up two times higher than it was in the heart of the Stationers’ system. The ‘Autobot’ visibly paled and the ‘Decepticon,’ who had been smiling a moment before, drew a servo down his face plates, threw his arms up and started walking away swearing loudly. The ‘Autobot’ ran after him as he walked away, frantically trying to get him to calm down and not cause a scene. The Decepticon at the booth thought he heard the ‘Autobot’ say something about telling a captain and seeing what he could do before the duo were swallowed up by the crowded market. The reaction had the Decepticon wondering if he might have gotten their situation wrong, but he shrugged it off with the approach of a new customer.

Half a cycle later a green and black tankformer with some good weight on him came storming through the plaza and stopped right in front of the Decepticon’s booth and started glaring daggers. The duo from before came running after him along with an ‘Autobot’ with serial numbers, a blue opticed warframe femme, and a red opticed grounder half the size of everyone else who looked like he couldn’t choose between a miniature tank or a race car, the latter two lacking any faction symbol at all.

“Wait, boss!” The unnumbered ‘Autobot’ shouted in dismay as he came within hearing range. “We can’t just smash the booth and run with the goods! We’ll never build rapport that way!”

“I dunno,” the half pint grounder said, eyeing the goods with crossed arms. “I think the boss has the right idea, none of this slag is worth half the price he’s charging.” 

The femme’s wings, decorated in thin white patterns that danced beautifully across her plating, spreading from the tips down the edges of red-green wings, dipped low in disgust. “Honestly, he wouldn’t even be loosing any profit.”

“Why am I the only voice of reason here!?” Screeched the ‘Autobot’ with no numbers.

The ‘Autobot’ that did have numbers raised his hand half heartedly. “If it makes you feel any better, I agree with you, but you’ve gotta get rid of faulty wiring (you’ve gotta get rid of the bad apples).” he ended the statement with a shrug.

The ‘Autobot’ put his face in his hands and screamed. His ‘Decepticon’ companion from earlier patted his shoulder placatingly.

Had the Decepticon been paying attention to the interaction, he would have made a complete reassessment of his initial impression of the first two bots and wondered who the frag these new ones were, but he wasn’t. He was staring at the angry tankformer in front of him, trying to determine where he had seen him. He answer hit him like a bullet train. 

Right there, in front of him, was the infamous Decepticon general, Ripjaw. The mech had gone M.I.A. somewhere around the height of the war along with the rest of his fleet when the fighting had been the most chaotic and they couldn’t spare enough resources searching for them. Ripjaw had always been known for his bad temper and his tendency to... mutilate anyone who didn’t comply. 

Not wanting his head ripped off, and refraining from asking where the general had been all this time out of self preservation, the Decepticon nervously offered his goods at their actual price and lowered it even further when ‘Ripjaw’s’ glare intensified.  Instead of being satisfied, ‘Ripjaw’ reaches over the booth and grabbed the vendor by the neck and shook him vigorously.

No one in the market took action. They glanced over, noticed the commotion was from warframes, and left it at that. They had learned long ago to leave Decepticon matters in Decepticon hands. It, surprisingly, ended up a lot cleaner than when anyone else tried to get involved.

“Were you trying to sell rip offs?” ‘Ripjaw’ growled. Honor and value were things he held in high regard. If someone tried to sell something for beyond it’s value, even if they weren’t selling it to him, he couldn’t stand for it.

The Decepticon in his fist sputtered for an excuse. His first thought flashed to the ‘Autobot’ that had first approached him.  “Well, he was an Autobot so I thought-“

‘Ripjaw’s’ grip tightened. “I don’t care what you thought. You thought you could gain anything from raising the prices that high? You thought you could keep someone from buying something because you’re averse to their motives? You thought no body would get wise to your dirty tricks? Well I-“

The numbered ‘Decepticon’ touched ‘Ripjaw’s’ elbow. “Malachite, we don’t have time for this.” He turned to the vendor. “Will you sell us this?” He guestured to the items in question. 

The Decepticon nodded his head as vigorously as he could in Malachite’s grip and managed to squeak out a breathless “Yes!” Malachite unceremoniously dropped him on the ground. 

Seeing that Malachite was in no mood to talk business, the numbered ‘Decepticon’ took it upon himself to organize the transaction. “Tourmaline,” he turned to the warframe femme whose plating, the vendor belatedly noticed, matched the color of tourmaline. “Load this up and  bring it to the ship.” He nodded to the materials the Decepticon vendor was quickly trying to pack up. “Hatchet, help her.” The two badgless mecha nodded and started picking up the crates the vendor had already packed and loading them into the femme. “Counterbalance,“ The numberless Autobot straightened up at his name. “Go with Groundpounder and see if you can find anything else we need before we go” the ‘Autobots’ of the group nodded dutifully before turning away and walking down the street. As they left, the vendor heard the Groundpounder say something to the Counterbalance that made the ‘bot groan in tired exasperation which caused the his companion to cackle. The numbered ‘Decepticon’ stayed and took care of the payments, all very reasonably priced now, while his boss stood to the side, continuing to melt the vendor with his gaze.

They left quickly after, surprisingly organized and apparently on a time crunch. The vendor, luckily for his spark, didn’t see them again before he left the market. When he returned, however, they were there. He decided to begrudgingly work with the ‘Autobots’ of the crew to avoid the ire of the mech he still understood to be Ripjaw. The mech had abandon that name almost half a millennia ago when he forgot most of his life in favor of the moniker ‘Malachite,’ after his plate color, but the vendor didn’t know that.

Over time, the Decepticon grew more familiar with this strange group of bots and as time wore on, more and more of them came. He slowly came to the conclusion that the ‘Autobots’ he was seeing, often accompanied by ‘Decepticons’ or similarly weaponized ‘Autobot’ companions were not captive slaves of some lost Decepticon settlement and, in fact, weren’t Autobots at all. They called themselves “Stationers” and claimed their home was in the complete opposite direction from the Autobot Commonwealth. They lived together with the ‘Decepticons,’ which the vendor also came to realize weren’t Decepticons at all, or at least, not any more, and had absolutely no knowledge about the Autobot-Decepticon war that they had left behind. Even Ripjaw/Malachite, who the Decepticon vendor knew was deeply involved in the war, seemed completely puzzled by it. The Stationers, apparently, couldn’t even fathom warring against their own kind. Their populations were apparently too small for it to be anything but genocide and anyone who disagreed with the populous was exiled. They would make a truce with the exiled, however, so that neither one could attack the other in order to preserve their people.

If the vendor were a historian or even a sociologist, he would have found the situation with the Stationers fascinating, but he was neither of those things, so the only thing it left him was incredibly confused. How did the Autobot and Decepticon populations mix in the first place? How do they not remember anything? How did they even settle down in the middle of a war!? Question upon question that didn’t really feel appropriate to ask and would only be more confusing to bring up.

Unfortunately, the Stationers didn’t learn half as much from the merchant. The Stationers came to the understanding that Autobots and Decepticons are two different categories of mecha. The separation seemed quite arbitrary to them since many of the bots the merchant called ‘Autobot’ had upgraded their armor and weapons to warframe levels to survive in their system  in addition to adding flying mods and some of the ‘Decepticons’ were what the Stationers would call civilian. It also became evident that should they meet other mecha or anyone inside the vendor’s galaxy, some of them would be mistaken for Autobots and Decepticons and others would not, which was infinitely more confusing. One thing that was clear, however, was the fact that Decepticons had a strong distaste for Autobots. They didn’t know why, whenever they asked, the vendor snarled and spat insults, calling the Autobots weak, pathetic stains on the universe and the like, but that didn’t really explain why they were hated in the first place.

This lead to continued confusion and miscommunication when it came to the Stations’ second accidental Cybertronian encounter. This time, with Autobots.

A small crew of younglings, a mixed crew of flight and ground frames which was standard for the Station population who saw nothing morally vile about either, had been sailing around from trade route to trade route. They had set out on a voyage to try stretching their wings in the vastness of the void. A little independent action. Unfortunately, no one in the small crew of five had any experience with comet storms. As a result, their small craft got wrecked and they ended up crash landing on a small colony planet on the outskirts of the Autobot Commonwealth and had to call a nearby Station ship to pick them up.

Fortunately, that ship consisted almost entirely of bots with Autobot emblems. Unfortunately, the crew arrived in a distinctly Decepticon ship. And the cherry on top, the colonists has reported the crashed younglings for suspicious (Decepticon) activity and the Elite Guard had come to... dispose of the threat. Threatened younglings plus protective Stationers did not make for a good first impression.

The only think that kept the younglings’ crash site from becoming a battlefield was the Elite Guard’s hesitance when they realized that the ‘Autobots’ that had arrived in the Decepticon style ship were missing war heroes. They had been told the mecha had died protecting the Commonwealth after they disappeared during a battle with a Decepticon fleet. The hesitance was enough for the arrived ‘Autobots’ to direct the younglings back to their ship and shoot a snarled threat to the Elite Guard that if they dared threaten their younglings again, they deactivate them painfully. “Consider this a warning.” With that, they boarded their ship and left, leaving a baffled and confused military.

Unfortunately, the Stations had a reputation for leaving bad first impressions, so they were not surprised. There was a reason diplomatic teams tried to make the first encounter, but merchant groups hardly took diplomats along with them. Mecha tried to minimize the damage done by first encounters and to spare their friends in diplomacy, and especially Kaon, the headache and paper work that came with crashing parties, but for the most part it was inevitable.

Oh well, they were used to amending botched political situations anyway. 

Just another day for the diplomats and legal teams of the Stations. Whoopie...

7. Marriage

“But first,” Mao’s sister clapped her hands together, “I wanna talk weddings some more!”

“Right on!” the badger agreed. He whooped. 

“Oh good grief,” Mao rolled his eyes. “Fine. You two can chat with the king about the possibility. And I reiterate. Possibility. When you’re ready to make good on your promise, come find me.” 

She clucked her tongue in disapproval. “Fine. Be the usual stick in the mud. Don’t know why I’m surprised.” 

He grabbed a few more things off his plate and left. 

“So,” she sat back down, “I guess if you favor men, the animals here didn’t have to petition for marriage laws to be amended, huh?” 

”Correct.” the lion replied. 

“Though some thought I was … ironically … being ‘biased.’ Oh well. Can’t help that. Royal power is absolute, for better or worse. I’ve traveled to other nations and, during debates, have suggested that they not use the term ‘marriage’ as I have. Law is, at least in some peoples’ opinions, supposed to be ‘secular,’ and not ‘religious,’ anyway, so why cling to a specific term that isn’t? Simply afford all the exact same rights to civil unions or domestic partnerships. Or make up a third designation. Much easier to get it passed that way. Bypasses a whole lot of entrenched resistance. People can hash out in their own communities what to do with the non-legal angles and rituals and what to call it. But for a ‘marriage’ certificate? What, after all, is a rhetorical difference, in the end?” the diplomat and statesman snapped his fingers. “And like that, less angst for absolutely everyone involved. It’s not always that easy to reconcile or find middle ground. I can’t think of practically any other issues where simply altering one single word could have that effect. Despite a couple of decades worth of rhetorical experience under my belt.”

He sat back, and interlaced his paws contentedly. “Some countries insisted they were still going to adjust tax breaks because of the very unlikely event of children. Unless surrogates are involved, and properly registered as such, to try to avoid wrangling over child custody. That’s a whole other kettle of fish to get into, obviously.” 

She nodded. “Well like Mao said, I’m not here to talk politics. Let’s hear your fantasies about the most important day of your life!”

The badger shook his head. “Well it’s not like that for everyone, but don’t get me wrong, I wanna hear, too!” he said excitedly. 

“Erm … “ the lion looked down. 

“What’s wrong?” she asked. 

“It’s just … I’m more enthusiastic about the idea than Mao, but I’m still a long way off from that myself. So, I don’t want to insult you by making you think I’m further along, just because I have envisioned a marriage … regardless of who the groom is.”

She frowned a little, thinking. “All right then.”

“But I would love to hear about some of your customs, in that event.”

Her face fell some more. “I’m not sure that would be a good idea.”

“Oh?”

“The homeland, though the majority is plenty accepting of pairing in general, has not approved marriage between men,” she said, “so any customs you applied to each other or one of you … might be seen as disrespectful. For example. Would Mao dress as the woman, since he’s chosen to sub? Not only do I think he would never, ever do that …” she looked at the badger for confirmation.

He shook his head, “Oh most definitely not.” He thought for a second. “Maybe that’s why he got up out of here, for that matter. He thought we were gonna suggest doing that. We’ve been to weddings like that. Again, a little like misgendering, no? Even in the rare cases where he gets a mind for it, he’s not at all like a typical sub.”

The badger paused. 

“He doesn’t really fit in when I would hang out with other subs. One panda I met just could not wrap his mind around Mao. It was kinda funny. Irritating for him, though. I would be totally down for dressing like the female counterpart in a wedding, if it were me. I’ve pictured it both ways. Maybe even a costume change in the middle?” he waggled his eyebrows. “Or whatever my partner wanted? If a polar bear gave me any direction I’d melt under his strong paw,” his gaze unfocused, and he hummed appreciatively. “Tuxedo? Coming right up. What color? What style? White wool tunic and stole, as is customary for you big guy? I’ll match you! Usus? My Ursus. My dear ursine. Coemptio? Confarreati? Gown? Dress? You got it, my bae bear. I’m male, sure, but a lot more loosey-goosey in that way. But. It’s not me.”

He sighed romantically. 

“If I understand Mao,” the lion said slowly, “in general, he’s less sentimental, at the very least in expression, so maybe it’s simply that he doesn’t get as wrapped up in it as you or I would.” 

The badger shrugged. 

“Also, women tend to get more excited about wedding planning. Not a hard and fast rule of course, but I think we’ve established that you and I have a lot more in common with women, so it makes sense we’d be more enamored, even if it didn’t necessarily need to be that way.”

The badger slapped his forehead. “Oh yeah, wow. How could I not think of that!” He put his paw down and gestured towards her. “I mean this whole conversation we've had a vibe and Mao has seemed the odd one out, gender wise, but I didn’t consider that.”

The badger went on, “Even without a wedding on the table, which is usually headed up by women in this part of the world, it’s often awkward in the first place for a typical guy to be in a room with all women and vice versa … so this visit has kinda been like that for him, I think. I mean, Mao’s always eager enough to go to a wedding, excited about hitting on and dancing with some ladies, and all, but that doesn’t mean he’d necessarily enjoy planning one. He might even leave it all up to you even if he was totally ready for it!” 

The three femme animals spent the next few hours discussing flower arrangements, color palettes, the band of tolerant aristocracy he would invite, and who among the clan would approve enough to come. That was hard for the sister to get through, as she thought of those she loved who would refuse to give their blessing and ‘miss all the fun.’

8. Self-Acceptance

Mao threw up his hands in exasperation. “This was different than anything anybody knew of. Other clans’ elders who had wielders hurt badly were brought in to consult. We wielders can be slammed around by dragons, can be thrown into the ground and make craters, and walk away. With lesser wielders, bruises could be shrugged off and healed. But SOMEHOW, the universe had, like a homing pigeon bent on mouse’s blood, found one little chink in our armor. . . . Delicate tails aren’t resistant enough to damage to withstand direct crush force. Some of the visiting canine elders spoke of a time when groups of semi-sapient non-magical hunting dogs had their flowing, floppy ears or long tails surgically cropped to keep them from injuring themselves on hunts. To potentially avoid something like this happening again … by cave-ins, like mine, by boulders hurled by some types of dragons, even just being stepped on by a dragon big enough …  Should all wielder animals, intending to fight these beasts … should every species with long tails start doing this removal with our children, they asked? With consent, of course. Like removing tonsils or primates removing the appendix? Lizards probably couldn’t do it, because their slanted gait was too dependent and their tails too heavy. So maybe just the tips? Surely the thicker parts of their tails withstand something like this? They asked. The elders of felines and canines and rodents and otters … the later they waited to dock tails in a trainee’s life, the more they would have to adjust to the missing counterbalance just as I was. They swarmed me and questioned me about it relentlessly. They were asking among themselves … What age would this terrible offered choice be appropriate?”

His green eyes widened in horror at these questions. As if he needed any more psychological stress after being temporarily crippled, he seemed to have altered the entire course of history with the way clans viewed preparation for wielder heroes.

“Inwardly, I felt like …” he once again tried to force the words out he had started before. “I felt like I was causing an implosion of the whole clan. The tranquil meditation spaces were overrun with visitors. Children still hid from me. Our elders argued over whether they should move me for the duration of my recovery, from the clan’s circle. They argued over what to do about the little ones. But didn’t I deserve to feel safe, too? Of course I was ripping everyone apart! It was what always happened when I was around! When we were all younger, and my sisters occasionally came to my defense from one another or dad, I felt it was somehow my fault they argued, too.”

Even if the elders made these new procedures for children voluntary, he would still be virtually ‘responsible’ for possibly unneeded selective surgical alteration of innocents.

“Blue says that’s common, for bullied children to feel like it’s their fault.”

He looked towards the door, probably thinking of the dog’s unruffled voice of reason.

“I try to listen to him. I try to like myself. B-but I … it seemed l-like my family w-was disintegrating because of m-m-me. And my stupid ‘mistake.’ The whole world of wielders, even! Sometimes it still does, when they visit …! Arguing over father’s treatment of me. Remember when my sister said she wasn’t sure starting arguments over lesser wielders was worth unsettling future heroes? Now imagine what I was thinking when the little ones didn’t feel safe in the circle of the clan because of me. I was drowning in self-blame and the only way I felt I could escape it was to work harder, push myself more, and get away from there.” 

Could Blue even help him out of this? The lion pictured him like a seeing eye dog this time, trying for all the world to lead the black cat out of such darkness. 

Bonus:

From my second story, Outnumbered. Tanya sashayed around the red-caped cat. “Hello Mittens.” “Tanya I swear if you do not stop calling me that, I’m going to use the wrong pronouns for you,” the cat threatened. “Touchy, touchy,” the tanuki tutted teasingly, but her normally chipper attitude got a dent in it. “As if that’s an even trade, anyway.” The masculine magic cat said gruffly, “Maybe not. But I’m tired of you mocking me without consequences. Just because that’s the only thing that ever gets under your skin is no fault of mine. Perky little miss.” She rolled her eyes. “So, you try to make gendering me correctly even sound derogatory. No wonder I broke up with you.” The cat’s fists tightened, but he spoke cooly. “If you can’t handle all this. I’ll just find someone who can.” 

“Like the king you’re serving as a bodyguard to?” the fox-like animal said in a silken tone. “The only kind of lion with no birth mane. Are you a chaser, you dog?” “First off. No. How dare you. Targeting gender non-conforming animals may not be officially dishonorable, but as a concept, it is,” the samurai bristled, “We’re not involved, and we’re never going to be. We’re not attracted to each other, as my nose could clearly tell if he was. Second of all. Since when do you have something against dogs?” “It’s an expression.” “An expression that’s derogatory towards dogs,” the cat sneered. “I can’t imagine the blue therapist dog could be less like that. It’s like ‘sexist pig.’ The yellow pig back in Pure Heart would be crushed if he ever heard someone utter it. Yet outside that nice little paradise, it’s a common saying. King Snugglemagne is having to adjust mightily to the outside world. You may be used to it, steeped in it, but for magic’s sake, stop teasing him about it.” “Oh, a king can’t take a little hardship?” she said lazily. “Of course not, he’s been ensconced in his fancy-pants palace. Now that he has an idea of how it is for everyone else, he crumples at the slightest trouble. Sorry I can’t muster up enough energy to care.” “You should care. Given that he has the same problems you do.” “With pronouns? Puh. Since I’m a roaming outlaw,” the orange animal said flouncily, “I don’t expect either other crooks or enforcers I encounter to respect that my gender doesn’t match my body’s smell. The former doesn’t even respect the law, so why should I take that personally? And the latter are more focused on getting me behind bars. So, no, not my problem. Too much of a bother.” “If you settled down, and got a respectable job,” the cat pointed out, “Established yourself as a constant presence, people would probably collectively accept you.” She laughed derisively. “Oh no, I value my freedom far more than that, Mi-” she swallowed back the nickname. He laughed just as derisively. “I see you do value my word on the matter, though,” he said suggestively. “Are you just not as tough as you make out, or do you still harbor some feelings for me, my sweet little illusionist?” 

She opened her mouth, but then shut it again. 

“You slippery mirage master,” he said “you do, don’t you?”

He paused. “Hm. ‘Master,’ maybe I should say ‘Mistress’?” he amended. “There’s . . . really no good choice there,” she chuckled hesitantly. “There are ‘Head Mistresses’ at some schools in Snugglemagne’s kingdom,” the cat pointed out. 

“Yes but . . . still has connotations. I don’t break the law that way,” she said, normally carefree attitude wobbling. “Even I have standards.”

“Hasn't stopped you from dangling the offer to get what you want,” he said. 

She blushed.

“Yeah, word gets around,” he went on blithely as she uncomfortably gripped one of her arms. “Don't know why I should be surprised that playing with hearts isn't beneath you. But more to the point. I know you’re ultimately reasonably principled in that arena, if really flirty. You ever want to get back together, babe, the invitation is open,” he winked. 

“And endure your jealous behavior again? I think not. I’ll file that away with other useless knowledge,” she said icily. 

“Oh that’s not like you,” he said in a low baritone. “You’re sweet to everyone, even if they can’t catch the mocking tone sometimes.” “Not everyone’s as smart as you, cupcake.” He looked caught off guard by the compliment. “She brushed her fingers under his chin. “I guess you’ll just have to miss me.”

She somersaulted away from him, waving goodbye and blowing a kiss.  He said under his breath, “As if I’d ever misgender you. You may play a lot of mind games, love, but you didn’t catch that bluff.”

Before the Coronavirus, an ongoing quarantine, and the recent economic fallout became front-page news, and a daily worry at the forefront of everyone’s mind, one of the biggest topics causing debate was women’s health, and more specifically the right to have an abortion. The word abortion is seldom ever heard on television, especially not on a major network, and especially not on popular TV. Still, the CW’s Roswell, New Mexico not only says the word, but they also show the main character make the decision and go through with it without regret, and with the support of her family and friends.

Roswell, New Mexico is that type of show. They treat significant subjects like race relations, xenophobia, women’s rights, and sexuality with intelligence and courage in a time when all of those topics are under fire from the highest power in the government. The fact that they do it under the backdrop of a story about literal aliens is just a bonus. On a show with so many deeply complex characters, there is one character whose story has had a significant impact on an entire community. That is the proudly bisexual alien cowboy Michael Guerin, played with nuance and depth by Michael Vlamis.

When it comes to the character of Michael Guerin, it would be so easy to get it wrong. Play him too cavalierly, he would come across as insufferable, too much melodrama, and he would come across as false. But although Michael Vlamis is pretty far from Guerin (they are two different species after all), it’s his willingness to find solidarity, and absorb this character to his very core that allows Guerin to come alive.

The heartbreak permeating Guerin’s story this season just happened to coincide with one painful experience of Michael’s own, and he wasn’t afraid to use that in his character. That’s what makes this performance so unique. As Michael said when chatting with me over the phone while we were both quarantined in our homes, “He has cracks in his armor, and I have always been someone who has cracks in my armor too. I just have to take those cracks and let them show.”

Michael is a surprisingly complex character. When you first see him in the first season, he has this kind of sexy outlaw thing going on, where he’s focused on only looking out for number one. But as the season progresses, he’s sort of stripped of all of his armor. Now in season 2, he’s in a more vulnerable position than ever. Did you know where this character was going to go when you first got it or were you just as surprised as the viewers were? I had no idea, and that was the most fun. I’m the type of actor who enjoys not talking about where my character is going with the writers. I trust the writers, and I know there will be growth, but there is something interesting about reading a script and acting out a scene from just what you already know has happened. Once you know what happens in the future, It’s hard not to play that. It comes across as more believable if you don’t know, and it’s fun to surprise yourself every week and surprise yourself in the moment. Plus, often, when you have that surprising moment, it can sometimes influence where the writers decide to bring the character.

I think a lot of the flashback in Season 1 Episode 6, and how interesting it was to know that Guerin wasn’t always this armored person. He was excited and living for love and planning on going off to college. When we did that episode, the writers did have to communicate what they wanted and tell me to play this character way differently than I had been. It’s been an exciting transition for him, he went from no armor to armor, to no armor and now in Season 2 he’s back in prison and fighting and he’s got the armor back on again.

It’s interesting because, in a way, the relationship drama that Michael is dealing with in season 2 seems like it shouldn’t be as relevant as a lot of the other plot points going on. Still, I think that the way that Michael is portrayed as an openly bisexual character is so unique on television these days, even though it shouldn’t be. It also allows the viewers to see a lot of his vulnerability. Did you feel a responsibility in portraying this aspect of Michael? Yes. When I got into it, I didn’t know a lot about the bi community. I knew about heartbreak and love and loss. In the pilot, I was coming out of heartbreak and channeling that. I just thought of Alex Manes as someone I was in love with and honoring what a strongly committed love that is. I brought that in, and when we did it that way, that was when the LGBT community started reaching out and saying how much I was affecting them with my work. They would dm me and say that my relationship with Alex gave them the confidence to come out. I didn’t realize that responsibility until we started affecting people. I think Tyler Blackburn (who plays Alex Manes) being bi, he knew more of what was going to happen. I hadn’t been on tv before or portrayed anyone who wasn’t straight, so I wasn’t expecting this. Now I know how important it is to continue to take this seriously, and that motivates me.

Tyler is so empathetic, and he has such empathetic eyes, everything I do is just playing off him, the strength of the characters comes from the relationship between the two of us. Without him, I don’t know where I would be. I don’t know if these characters would be as compelling without him.

Roswell is a really special show in the way that it weaves these real-world conflicts of xenophobia and the fear of otherness into a fantastic story about aliens living on earth. Your character represents so many of the difficulties inherent in being someone different. Can you talk about where the show is taking these sorts of conflicts this season, and maybe where they might affect the direction of your character? I think the way they’re taking the show is with the idea that even though we are different, we are also human. Our morals and what we believe in and how we affect others and how we want to be loved is special. Even though we are from another planet, we have the same values. We are so vilified in the flashbacks with the military but, none of the aliens wanted to hurt anyone until they had to defend themselves. What’s important with our show is that we are all one, no matter what your origin is. We can continue to grow to adapt and be better. We shouldn’t be vilified for what someone distantly related to us did.

We are the outcasts, but because of our skin color, no one questions us. Now all of a sudden we are the bad guys because people have found out about this big secret. The most vilified characters are the Ortechas, somewhat because of what happened with Rosa, but also because of race. The racial tension has protected the white people in the community who are also the people that the military is trying to hunt.

What are the ways that you relate to this character? Do you ever take anything from your life and put it into the role? On the same note, does his story ever bleed into yours? That’s all I do in my work. It gets me in trouble, especially now that people are reading my writing. People will be like, “you stole what I said to you.” If it wasn’t said, it wouldn’t matter enough to be shared. The truth is so important. I always find ways to pull from my life. Unlike Michael, I come from a great family. I come from a family who loved me and supported me. My dad was always leaving work early and coming to my games, but he was hard on me, and I felt like perfection was something I was always trying to achieve. As I get older, I realize perfection doesn’t exist. Achieving greatness through your values and being the best you can be, is what matters. When I was a kid, I was overweight, and for a while, I was always getting hurt and going through all these surgeries. Adversity would arise in my life, and then I would have to learn how to deal with it.

With Michael, he feels like things are working so well with Maria, but then Maria finds out he’s an alien, and he’s pushed aside. All of those ebbs and flows of what life throws at you go into the show. I was the fat kid in school, and now I am on the CW, but I remember what it was to be 12 in love, and no one sees you. All of those moments pushed me to be funny as a kid, as a defense mechanism. That’s in me, no matter who the character is, the cracks in the armor are there. I put that into Michael.

One specific thing this year in the show is that I lose Max. in the offseason, I lost a childhood friend while I was with him in person. It was this horrible experience, and it was so weird, and I was sitting there trying to make sense of things, but what made sense was that this guy supported me so much. So I took the feeling of loss and put that into what Guerin feels when Max is gone. In tonight’s episode, I channeled my buddy and made it real. I was haunted this season and maybe even a little too hard on myself, but I wanted to honor my friend. That is a tragic way I incorporate real life into my work. But I’m tipping my hat to my friend. Hopefully, he’s watching and proud.

So, apart from your work as an actor, you are also a producer and a writer. Are you working on anything right now? Does having that diversity of experience make acting easier and vice versa? Definitely. You understand a set, and if I’m producing my own film, I know what goes into that, and if I’m writing for a kid character, I know that they need chaperones and tutors. Being on set shaped me as a writer and producer. Last year, I wrote a film with Kyle [Anderson] about the late rapper Mac Miller called Blue Side Park, And it made the 2019 blacklist of best un-produced scripts. Once that happened, it opened the door for me to do more work. I have a script at McFarlane’s company and another tv show, where Dan Lagana is the showrunner. Having these projects moving has been keeping me busy. We’re getting close. Now I’m writing my next movie, which was initially going to be a thriller, but during the quarantine, it’s been hard to write this dark story, so we (my writing partner and I) made it into a comedy. I produced my first film last year that won the best ensemble cast at the LA indie film fest, called 5 Years Apart. My roommate co-wrote and directed that, and we’re getting distribution. I’m staying busy.

It’s almost funny, Eli Vanto thought to himself as he caught the slightest discomfort across his new bunk-mate and unspoken charge’s face. A serious, composed, ultrapolite man like Thrawn balking at something as necessary as caf. The same altercation had been happening each morning and afternoon for about a week now. The stimulating beverage appeared to be necessary, considering the way Thrawn sipped at it while reading at lightning-quick speeds during their every free moment, trying to bridge the gaps in his education. Also, Eli didn’t have any evidence of Thrawn actually sleeping. Even if he woke in the middle of the night, the Chiss was still awake at their shared desk.

That couldn’t be healthy, but frankly, Thrawn had asked for this, and it wasn’t Eli’s problem unless there was an urgent translation he needed that couldn’t wait. (Which, again, considering Thrawn’s ultra-politeness that extended to the point of seeming condescending, hadn’t happened. Yet.)

Cadet Vanto went back to his breakfast, a boring mix of slop-like grains with enough vitamins to make it a paste. At least at Myomar they had fresh fruit. One would think that Royal Imperial would have had far superior dining facilities, since it was located on perfect Coruscant. There were just some things that Wild Space excelled at, and this was one of them. Even the latemeal, which was actual food was bland for the most part.

Blue fingers wrapped around the metallic mug for the umpteenth time. Eli pointedly didn’t look at him, but he couldn’t help but notice that the mug kept getting pushed further and further away with active disdain. Eli resolved to intervene, even as his inner voice reminded him that this was the man who had literally turned his entire life inside out. It was just for a little while, he told himself, squashing his uglier thoughts. He was obviously a long way from home, but Thrawn’s home was much further, and he certainly didn’t have any friends.

Besides, it was Eli’s job to babysi- his job to acclimate Thrawn to his new life in the Empire. Eli considered his own thermos. He could drink caf however it came, but he knew how he preferred it. He was willing to bet good credits, based on his knowledge of the Chiss’s food preferences, that the Lieutenant had a bit of a sweet tooth.

“Here.” Vanto held out the thermos, a deep maroon in color, a not-quite identical twin of the one he brought with him every day to the commissary. They’d been about to depart for the morning meal before a lengthy stint of classes and labs that would keep them occupied until the latemeal.

Intense red eyes flicked down then back up the short distance to his roommate’s eyes. Vanto had expected distrust, but Thrawn’s eyes gave nothing away but scrutiny. He took it, his long fingers icy cold where they brushed over Eli’s far warmer ones. He studied the thermos as the cadet turned away.

“Obviously you hate caf, but it’s a necessary evil, and there ain’t a tea leaf to be had in the Empire’s facilities-” Vanto winced at the prominence of the twang in his voice but continued anyway, “Probably it was the drink of the Jedi.” He opened their tiny shared closet, split in exact halves. Eli’s smaller uniforms hung to the left, Thrawn’s larger ones to the right, small lockers underneath to house any personal effects.

Crouching, Eli was vaguely aware of the looming presence of Thrawn, who still hadn’t said anything. He could see the shadow of the Chiss, the way he held the travel mug awkwardly, unsure what to do with it. “You noticed that I dislike caf,” He said, well, Eli thought, he more mused it to himself, but Eli was in the room too.

“I did,” He answered, interrupting whatever Thrawn was thinking. “Seems we have that in common. I’ll drink it if I have to - I certainly prefer them to stims - but I don’t like it.”

“You have it each time we’re at the commissary,” Thrawn commented, and that might have been an expression like surprise, but it was there and gone in the space between blinks.

“I do,” Eli confirmed. He pulled something from his locker. “I’ll let you in on a secret,” He said, rising to his feet and nudging the locker shut with his heel as he set the box in his hands on the desk. Inside were metallic pouches. Tons of them. “Put one in your belt-pouch for later, and dump one in the thermos.” He took point, grabbing his thermos from the desk and popping the top off of it. He ripped open one of the tiny packs and carefully emptied the contents into the thermos, then looked up at Thrawn.

“What is it?” Thrawn asked.

“Powdered chocolate and tang bark. Try it. You won’t regret it.”

Too polite to refuse, Thrawn took a single packet and dumped it into his own thermos, thanking Vanto as he did, though he still eyed the thermos dubiously.

When he dipped back into his locker to put the box back, Eli grabbed a few extra packets for later. He wasn’t sure of much when it came to his new bunkmate, but he damn sure wasn’t wrong about this.

Sure enough, when they had the fifteen minutes necessary to run through the mess between lectures that afternoon, he watched Thrawn eye the caf dispenser with disdain. Eli pulled the extra two pouches from his belt without so much of a word and set them beside Thrawn’s mug as he poured the dark beverage.

“Sometimes one’s not enough,” He offered as an explanation, then added, “This morning’s caf was better, but still not sweet enough for you.”

He couldn’t help the smile when Thrawn didn’t hesitate to take the two powdered cocoa pouches and tip them into his mug and resolved to make sure he left the box on their shared desk for easier access. Lost in his thoughts, Eli missed the look of purposely reserved interest Thrawn threw his way as he helped himself to his afternoon refill.

When their eyes met next, Thrawn offered him a grateful nod and deposited the three empty packets into the waste bin as they left. Their walk to their next lecture was as comfortable as it was silent. Eli never thought twice about the incident, or the way that cocoa-cut caf became the norm of Thrawn’s life in the Imperial Navy.

Thrawn did. He thought about it often, reflecting on it late one evening aboard his flagship, stylus flying across his datapad as he penned a journal entry about the value of having a friend, be they near or far.

Most of the time, Thrawn’s (admittedly) genius plans tended to send them to obscure locations and land them in even more obscure situations. This time, however, they found themselves in a mid-sized city-center in the throes of celebration of some solstice or another. Stands and tents were set out in the streets, and the smells of festival food - fried and delicious - hung heavy in the warm air.

Ensign Vanto relished the heat, wearing a combination of canvas utility pant and a button-up shirt in creamy off-white that he’d left unbuttoned part way. “Kinda reminds me of back home,” He admitted, the conversation honest though it fit easily into their cover. Thrawn fit in here, more or less. There were many alien species interspersed throughout this Outer Rim world, and due to the brightness of the sun, Thrawn had been able to conceal his telling eyes with dark-tinted lenses for most of the day.

Now, however, it was approaching dusk, and the heavy tint did the captain no good. He tucked them into a pocket of his long-sleeved tunic, dark in color, but lightweight enough to diffuse heat.

“There are festivals like this on your homeworld?” Thrawn asked idly, scanning for signs of the smugglers whose ship they’d found earlier in the day at the meager, yet crowded spaceport. He turned back to regard Eli, the red-brown tone of his exposed skin deepening after a day in the sun. “You speak rarely of Lysatra,” He added.

“Not much happens there, sir,” Vanto supposed. “But we’re out far enough that a lot of things are the same world-to-world.” Thrawn’s eyes narrowed, so Eli prepared to unknowingly give him some kind of clue, thereby making Eli the butt of an unspoken joke for not being able to see the bigger picture. “Lots of folks planet-hop to make easy credits. People are more inclined to spend frivolously, and buy things they don’t need.” His brow furrowed, and he looked to Thrawn as he reasoned, “It’d be easy to doctor books or money launder that way, especially in the food industry.” There, Eli thought. At least he realized he was onto something. That was good, right?

Thrawn smirked so wide Eli almost called it a smile. Alas, it was too predatory. “I believe the majority of food vendors are located on the next block,” He said. “Shall we?”

In the end, Thrawn handled the authorities while Vanto carefully considered their options and his current credit situation. This was entirely too much like home. Vendors called out to him despite knowing he’d been part of the duo who created a real mess of this specific area of the festival hours earlier. Some of them heckled him for riling up the crowd and getting a fellow vendor arrested, hoping to guilt him into spending his credits.

He settled for procuring two very interestingly colored fruits that had been dipped in something that seemed to glitter when it caught the light. It almost resembled a candied jogan fruit, if not for the brilliant blue-green color of the fruit itself. The outer shell smelled sweet, and while it was hardly an acceptable alternative for the late meal, it was something easy to consume while they walked back to their shuttle.

When he held one out to Thrawn, the Chiss stared at it in obvious surprise. Then, unbidden, the smallest hint of delight crossed through his usually intense eyes as he took it. “Thank you, Ensign.”

Eli nodded. “You’re welcome, sir.”

“You did well,” Thrawn said, sometime after they’d started their rather innocuous walk back through the now lit bazaar. They easily maneuvered through the throngs of beings. “I rather suspected you would catch on to their scheming, though I had suspected it would have been one of the market vendors, not a food vendor.”

“We’re too far from the Core for everything to be on the books. Edible items are far easier to conceal, especially when they’re not dangerous. Makes it easier to adjust the records, I guess.”

“Again,” Thrawn praised. “An excellent deduction.” He cast a glance to the side as Eli chewed a bite of his own treat. “You should be proud of yourself.”

“Thank you, sir,” Eli said. “I’m just glad it was a chase and not bloodshed.”

“As am I,” Thrawn agreed. Slower, more thoughtfully, he said, “My people have similar celebrations like this for the solstice. There are variances,” He continues, but doesn’t expand upon those further. “It was rare that we were able to attend.”

“I suspect you didn’t grow up on a sparsely populated world. These kinds of things are about the only option for people to celebrate bein’ alive,” He drawled but didn’t flinch away at the sound of his own voice. “Back home it was an excuse to take some time away.”

“Do you miss it?” Thrawn asked, the intensity of his gaze dialed up. “Your homeworld?”

“About as much as you do, I’d suppose,” The human answered, biting into his candied fruit. “It’s nice to be planetside, but I’m starting to come to the realization that there’s nothing wrong with belonging to the stars.”

Thrawn covered his pensive frown with another tentative bite of the treat Vanto had procured for him, but he did not escape the younger man’s notice entirely. He was becoming too good at this, Thrawn realized. His skills had been improving. He need only stop doubting himself so much and he would likely exceed Thrawn’s expectations in time.

“I do not miss my people,” Thrawn said. “My duty is to the Empire.”

“There’s more to a person than duty,” Eli offered carefully, but he didn’t say anything more.

Thrawn had noticed Vanto’s speech - more obviously, the lack thereof - over the last several days. He cleared his throat often before he said anything, trying to be quiet about it. It was also apparent that his body was running warmer than normal if one were able to see into the infrared, of course. No doubt his aide was working through some human-specific virus that did not find the far cooler Chiss biology to be a hospitable breeding ground.

Bringing it up to his aide on the bridge would hardly be appropriate, Vanto was the kind of man who preferred to remain under the radar- a term he’d explained to Thrawn that Thrawn rather liked. He too preferred to ‘fly’ under the radar, he supposed, though a free alien in an all-human military was never truly going to remain unnoticed.

Even so, Thrawn saw himself off the bridge of the Thunder Wasp with nary a word. Commander Chino didn’t spare him a second glance - no doubt he was reading some holo-novel he’d picked up at the last port, with an extra tab open as to be prepared if the helm had a question. Their patrol was routine, banal, and their Commander was hardly likely to notice him missing for the three minutes and twenty-six seconds it would take him to complete his task.

He was right.

Chino didn’t notice that he’d gone missing. Vanto did though, Thrawn could see it in the tense lines of the man’s back. Vanto was a good aide. Protective. He presented as a pushover but showed signs of that durasteel spine. He had an impeccable ethos. No doubt he was prepared to combat any untoward commentary by the crew regarding his unadvertised absence from the bridge, trusting Thrawn to have good reason.

Thrawn set a disposable cup down beside his console, only sparing him the quickest glance from the left corner of his eye. Curls of steam rose from the small opening of the lid, and the tip of a tea sachet’s labeling was tucked beneath the brim so that only the corner of it remained in sight. The scent was subtle, though Thrawn doubted his younger aide could smell much of anything with how congested he’d become as he returned to his own station closer to the helm.

The ensign waited exactly four minutes and thirty three seconds for the tea to cool to a temperature that would not damage his tongue, fingers curling around it as he continued his monitoring as assigned, his datapad connected to the terminal for later analysis. He didn’t acknowledge Thrawn, though he likely knew by now that Thrawn had already catalogued his flash of surprise followed by gratefulness. Thrawn not speaking to him meant no response was necessary, and the casual aloofness of the gesture hadn’t drawn the attention of the crew stationed around them.

What the ensign didn’t know was that the tea hadn’t come from the staff lounge. It had come from Thrawn’s personal stores, from a trader who dealt exclusively in rare blends - even some of the Jedi’s favorites, lost to time and hatred Thrawn wasn’t sure they exactly deserved but chose to ignore. It wasn’t quite Csillan tea, but it was a variant, one that tasted like crystalline blooms and sweet red fruit he’d yet to encounter in the empire. He’d added less sweetener than he’d normally allow himself since Vanto found a very diverse range of flavors palatable. If it had been Thrawn’s beverage, he’d have found it barely passable, and nearly a waste of rare tea.

He watched Vanto savor it for the next hour between monotonous events and a bit of extra curricular research into what may or may not have been Nightswan’s most recent activities. Vanto worked hard and tolerated far more than most. Such unnecessary sacrifices were most certainly worth it.

Eli had been hoarse for a week now. Thrawn has been away for yet another court martial, and once again Faro has been left alone and in charge of the Seventh Fleet. Faro hated it, always worried she’d break something that couldn’t be fixed before her commanding officer returned and would be subsequently nailed to the wall for it. Thrawn wasn’t like that, she knew Thrawn wasn’t like that, but she kept Eli close to her like a security blanket.

How he hadn’t gotten her sick yet was likely a result of way too many vitamin boosters on the commander’s part, but Vanto had neither the time nor energy to rile Faro up for nothing.

Finally, Thrawn’s shuttle is scheduled to come back, and the lieutenant commander can’t help but exhale in tandem with Faro. “I hope the debrief is quick,” He said, voice rasping and prickly but not unkind, “But,” He sighed, “I doubt it.”

“You’re welcome to go.”

Vanto’s eyebrows go up. “You want to subject yourself to him by yourself?” He cleared his voice when the volume gave out. “Since when?”

“He won’t care about the debrief, Vanto,” She drawled. “At this point it’d be stupid to contact him, and he’d be more worried about you taking ill. There’d be no debrief until he confirmed you to be alright.”

“Oh, not you, too,” He groaned, the sound rougher and more obviously pained. “He’s our commanding officer.”

“Right, and you’ve been his other half since he joined the Empire,” Faro reminded him.

That irritated him because it meant she’d been listening to the Chimaera’s crew which tended to speculate wildly about anything and everything. She could make her own conclusions, ones that didn’t insinuate he was Thawn’s glorified house-partner and maid. Irritated, he said, “Which is why you keep me at your beck and call. I’m a scapegoat, and you feel less guilty about it because you realize he won’t be unnecessarily cruel to me if you throw everything on me.” He coughed into his elbow while holding up his other hand to keep her quiet. “Y’got another-” He broke off into another hoarse cough, his voice giving out just as the door behind them opened.

“Admiral,” Faro acknowledged.

Thrawn set a tall mug of tea on his desk in front of Eli and gestured for them both to sit while he readied his datapad.

‘How does he do that?’ Faro mouthed to Vanto.

“Thank you, sir,” Eli said after a swallow of the gifted tea. It was sweet like candy, almost syrupy in consistency, but ultimately soothing. He almost sounded normal for how few words he spoke.

“To answer your question, Commander,” Thrawn said, lifting his eyes from his datapad to regard Faro, “Lieutenant Commander Vanto’s dictated replies to my messages have required multiple manual revisions, leading to a longer than usual response time of approximately twenty seconds instead of the usual ten to twelve. It was the logical conclusion that the software was acting up because Vanto’s speech had been compromised, and you had not reported an injury to me,” He looked at her pointedly, “Thus he had to be ill.”

“I see, sir,” Faro said.

“Reporting me under the weather isn’t a thing you need to do,” Vanto chimed from beside her, fingers threaded together around his mug.

“On the contrary, I would have preferred to be aware,” Thrawn said, eyes never leaving Faro. “I would also encourage you to do your own research regarding the relations of our crew. Not everything is as the-” He broke off and said a word in Sy Bisti.

Faro flushed, wondering if perhaps he’d heard their conversation through the not so thick door to the officer’s corridor.

It took Eli a second to pick the right word for the conversation. “The equivalent in Basic that’s appropriate for discussion would be ‘watercooler,’” He said, looking to Faro, who very obviously knew what the word meant, unpleasant connotations and all. Maybe she spoke Sy Bisti too, Eli considered.

“Thank you,” He inclined his head to Vanto. “You understand,” He said to Thrawn.

That had a lot of connotations, but Faro was suitably chastised and nodded eagerly. “Understood, Sir.”

The debrief was long, but Vanto didn’t seem to mind being the passive observer and took notes. Faro noticed that Thrawn didn’t ask him anything unless absolutely necessary, a consideration that most commanders wouldn’t have for their staff. If they reported for duty, that was on them. At least, that was how it had always been. There wasn’t much of a human - well, she considered that a bit sardonically, looking at her very non-human superior officer - aspect to the Imperial Navy. Or the Empire, in general. Not that she’d be caught dead saying so.

When they were dismissed, she peeked into his tea mug. It wasn’t quite empty, but there was a whole lot of sweetener in the bottom of it. “How much did he put in that?” She asked Vanto in disbelief. “There’s enough in there that you should’ve had to chew it. Does he not know how to make tea?”

Vanto grinned a little sheepishly. “I like it just fine,” He said.

“He did that on purpose?” Faro asked, incredulously.

“It’s actually how he likes it,” Vanto admitted. “If you ever have a briefing without me, caf or tea, any kind, with so much sweet you empty the dispenser should win you some points with him.”

“Let’s hope that never happens,” Faro said under her breath as they parted ways.

Years later, she’d find herself dropping into the chair across from his desk with two mugs in hand, one blessedly black, tea, not caf for a change, and the other teeming with sweetener. Thrawn would accept it without a word, and his otherwise stressed visage would smooth for a moment when he realized she’d made it just as he liked.

“I thought he might have told you,” He would muse moments later, uncharacteristically forlorn, and she would have to sip her tea to brace herself. Thrawn hadn’t meant to speak aloud, she knew, just like she knew she wasn’t to bring up the ‘he’ Thrawn had mentioned. Instead, she would sit quietly, look at the artwork strewn around Thrawn’s office without really seeing it, and wonder when the hell it had all gone to shit.

They’re not undercover. That’s what struck Eli as weird about the whole thing. They’re not undercover and Thrawn is on leave. Thrawn doesn’t take leave. Well, he did, but he was the sort to take leave to go on some undercover adventure tracking something that high command doesn’t want him to, so he instead stumbles onto it anyway by “coincidence.” It’s never like this, and Eli is concerned to say the least.

Thrawn knew it, too.

It was why he asked Eli to come with him, but neglected to explain the situation until they’d both filed the paperwork to excuse them. Eli was correct in suspecting Thrawn had an ulterior motive, but he was patient enough not to guess. After all this time, despite every bump and hiccough in their storied past, he trusted Thrawn to do what was best.

“I wish to send you away,” Thrawn said, in some upscale, dimly lit cafe, a piece of absurdly saccharine cake sitting in front of him. Being on leave, Eli had chosen some kind of custard-filled pastry with a flaky outside. He had split it two and put the smaller piece on the edge of Thrawn’s round plate without thinking much about it. Thrawn liked to try new things, and they had similar opinions on most desserts.

Eli hadn’t reacted to his words, hadn’t even let shock pass over his features. Somehow, he knew it had to be something bad. Thrawn took leave when he wanted to skirt the rules, when he was trying to act around the Empire’s clutches. “Well,” Vanto nodded once, consideringly, then met Thrawn’s eyes. “It can’t be anytime close to when we get back, unless you’re planning to make it look like you’ve killed me.”

“Commander Vanto,” He said, then shucked military formalities altogether, the subject matter too grim. “Eli, this isn’t a mission for-”

“I know,” Eli interrupted, and watched Thrawn lean back in the aesthetically mis-matched chair, inspecting him. “Was it Pryce?”

“Among others,” Thrawn said, squinting a little, as if trying to see that much deeper into Eli’s mind. “Did you know before?”

“No, no,” Eli relaxed back into his shorter chair. It was well-worn, and comfortable. The cafe had a few other patrons, but they were far from any occupied tables. “It was how you said it.” He shrugged. “You’re giving me a choice, and you were purposely ambiguous because it isn’t above board.”

Thrawn nodded, and Vanto got the hint that he was pleased, if still a little careworn. Slowly, methodically, he cut into the impressive piece of cake and took a bite. Chewed thoughtfully, swallowed, and, “I wish to send you to my people,” He said.

Eli nodded slowly, tipped his head back against the plush chair so that his gaze met the ceiling, then closed his eyes. “It’s a one way trip,” He mused aloud. Brought his chin back down, looked at Thrawn. “Isn’t it?”

“That may very well be the case.” In Thrawn-speak, that was an affirmative.

“Will my family know?”

Thrawn looked conflicted. Eli was almost touched that he had thought of it in advance, but at the same time, Eli knew the only reason Thrawn thought of it was because the answer would not be yes. “I-”

Eli held up a hand. “Do I have time to think about it?”

“Of course,” Thrawn agreed. “Time is of the essence, but this is not an order. I wouldn’t hold it against you.”

He knew that, though. Thrawn was used to being alone, to having no one to support him without ulterior motives. At least, he was, with one exception. “What would you do,” He had to ask, “Without me?”

Thrawn smiled at that, eyes bright with mirth. He took a larger than normal section of cake and coerced it over to Eli’s plate. “I am surprised you would ask.”

“Something tells me you’re not planning on returning to your people,” Eli said. “Call it a hunch.”

“Why would I? I serve the Empire.”

“Semantics, Mitth’raw’nuruodo,” Eli said, and he knew his pronunciation of Thrawn’s name was flawless. Thrawn’s expression was worth it as he helped himself to a taste of the cake Thrawn had bestowed upon him.

“Agree to go, and I will tell you everything I am able,” Thrawn retorted.

“I could say yes, then take it back,” Eli argued, for argument’s sake. He wouldn’t though. Even now, Eli knew he’d already made up his mind. Thrawn always had the bigger picture in mind. He wasn’t looking for status within High Command, he was looking for an answer to a question. Eli wasn’t quite sure what that question was, but somehow he got the feeling that whatever the answer was turning out to be wasn’t the one Thrawn had hoped for. This was a contingency. He was a contingency.

“You are a man of your word,” Thrawn said. “And regardless of what you may or may not have heard from Colonel Yullaren, you are the only one I would trust with this task.”

“Y’still didn’t answer my question,” Eli said, leaning into his drawl.

“I’ll answer yours when you answer mine,” Thrawn hissed, rather abruptly. Eli heard the words but discerned the meaning. It was as snappish as if Thrawn had said the three words he absolutely hated and all but refused to say: I don’t know. The silence buzzed around them until he said, softer, “You do not need to concern yourself with me. I will be fine.”

“You and I both know that isn’t how this goes.”

“It will have to be, if you agree to this task.”

Eli smiled sadly. “You and I both know I’m goin’,” He murmured, rising. “So I’m going to get the rest of that cake to go, and we’re going to stop at a shop on the way back and get something to drink.” The something meaning something alcoholic didn’t go unnoticed by the Chiss. “Sound like a plan?”

Exhaling, Thrawn nodded. He looked down at the remains of Eli’s dessert, all but forgotten, then up at Eli. “You should think it over,” He said. “We do not have to discuss it right away.”

Technically, they didn’t. This had all been meticulously planned by Thrawn, of this, Eli had no doubt. He’d likely built in several days for Eli to make up his mind, and then separate contingencies both for and against his decision.

But Eli was sure. So he bought the other half of the cake and had two disposable utensils thrown into the bag, returned to the table they were sharing and lingered next to the chair while Thrawn finished his cake and the nibble of Eli’s abandoned pastry, and resolved to be braver than he felt for both their sakes.

It would be the last time either of them would eat cake within the Empire’s bounds. They had sat cross legged with the takeaway container between them on one of their oversized hotel room beds, slowly polishing off the extremely sweet confection as Thrawn unravelled layer upon layer of his plans, of what Eli would be expected to do. Somehow, after that, the look of some multi-layered cake, marbled with decadent, delicate layers of sponge between thick, homemade buttercream made something uncomfortable curl in Thrawn’s belly. He’d tell himself it was because they’d eaten themselves sick of it, if only to prevent himself from thinking about Eli.

Csillan distilleries specialized in a distinctly sweet wine made of the icy fruit that grew in crystal-like pods and thrived in the cold. It’s black exterior yielded to a bloody red center that gave the wine its color. It had been decades since Thrawn had enjoyed this particular type of wine - any true wine, by his standards, really. The Empire considered sour and bitter flavors to be complex. It gave him an honest reason not to imbibe amongst his superiors, and the inclination only to sip at one singular glass if partaking was deemed necessary.

But that, that would no longer be necessary. He stepped around his admiral and approached the bar, inclining his head thoughtfully at the occasional officer or council-member who recognized him. He had no desire to discuss anything with anyone. His presence was mandated by the council, and his superior officer - who wished to share her suffering with her new first officer, of that he had no doubt - had seen to it that he did not dodge their request through some convenient loophole.

The wine was as spicy-sweet as he remembered, sampling a single swallow first: protocol, for these socially complex functions. The spicy bouquet hit like a rush before subsiding into a complex blend of unique winter-fruits: the result of a complex, but rewarding fermentation process. It was no surprise to Thrawn that the owner of these plants and the distillery itself was considered rich, even by the lavish terms of the Ascendency.

“Somehow I knew I’d find you over here,” A lightly accented voice said from behind him as the server let him consider. It was deeper, light and delicate around the less familiar consonants that filled the Chuenh language. “Nahnactim’ven,” He pronounced smoothly. Snowrise wine, a name it earned from old tales that said the fruits were sweetest and most palatable when picked before sunrise under falling snow. “It reminded me of that tea you always plied me with way back when,” They said, voice even and nostalgic.

“Vanto?”

There was a smirk on the younger man’s face, his dress uniform limned in gold so that the brighter color caught his eyes in the dim lighting overhead. “Hello, Thrawn,” He greeted, facing his former Admiral head on. His tunic was the deep blue color of a vice admiral.

The same as the one Thrawn wore himself. And then, he remembered. Earlier, Admiral Ar’alani had said she would introduce him to her fleet commander, with whom Thrawn would share duties, assuming they did not find Thrawn first...

When Thrawn had returned to the Ascendancy, it had been years since that fleeting last meeting between. Vanto had been gone. He had barely enough time between debriefings to familiarize himself with the people he had left behind. He’d thought of his former commander often, though. Considered it perhaps a mercy that Ar’alani would not tell him anything as to save him the realization that he was long dead, or perhaps sent off on some mission from which he might never return. He hadn’t been expecting this.

If the other man had not anticipated the embrace - stiff, and brief, but no less sentimental for it - he did not act surprised. Instead, Eli leaned into it for the few seconds it lasted, then stepped back, smiling.

Then, turning to the bar, the human managed to procure an entire bottle, face heating ever so slightly in the infrared as the server winked playfully in Thrawn’s direction. It was hardly noticeable amongst the rest of the crowd, their faces washed in warmth from the sheer number of people in the gala’s attendance and their own alcohol consumption. Thrawn found he didn’t really mind. It wasn’t anyone’s business, but if they didn’t notice, it would be due to their own inability to draw obvious conclusions.

“It’s good to see you,” He said over the din of the crowd, projecting an easy-going confidence as he held up the bottle and two empty glasses. He knew it wasn’t socially acceptable, either, but, Thrawn realized, his smile was bright and roguish anyway as he asked, “Maybe we could catch up?”

"She takes after her mother." - Zeus about Eris

Eris is the daughter of the Zeus, Ruler of the Olympian gods, and his wife, Hera. She often entered into the schemes and plans of her older twin brother Ares to ignite the dissension that often leads to war. Possibly as a way to cause dissension between gods and mortals, she stole the golden apple from the garden of the Hesperides guarded for Hera and had it engraved with the words, “For the Fairest.” She then tossed it among the guests attending the marriage of King Peleus of Aegina to the goddess Thetis. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite then tried to claim the apple in the dispute that triggered the Trojan War. Her activity after that event is unrecorded, but after the war, several Trojan refugees lead by Dardanian prince Aeneas conquered the area upon Rome was built on. During the Roman Empire, Eris was intensely worshipped by the Romans as one of their most important goddesses. During this time, Hercules most often antagonized Eris as he prevented most of her attempts to cause dissent and strife among mortals.

During one of his skirmishes with mortal heroes, Hades gave Eris the ability to turn into giant tapian snake called Enyo. She has bitten heads of mortal heroes off and brought them to Hades in the Underworld. Eris later used both this giant and small form of tapian snake to spread more strife among the mortals.

In his visits to Earth, Zeus became incensed that Eris was taking an active role in exciting her followers into killing Christians in his name. He decided to break off ties with Earth and allow the worship of the Olympian Gods to fade away. Eris retaliated by assisting many of the gods eager to preserve their ties to earth into hunting down mortals. Zeus faked his death to lend credence to an end of worship of the Olympian gods. To all who had seen these events, it appeared as if the gods were dead, but Zeus had several spells in effect that any god that was killed would be restored to life. Eris in meantime tried to hold on to whatever worshippers she had, but it all ended quickly. Defeated, Eris retreated to Olympus for some time.

In modern years, Eris became intrigued by the forces of terrorism and racism on earth and even masqueraded as a mortal to stir up trouble between blacks and whites, Jews and Anti-Semitics, left and right wing liberals and other potentially controversial groups. Seeing as her brother Aries had fared unsuccessfully against Hercules, she began training her own modern champion, Centurion, as a worthy ally. She eventually sent him to kill Kyllian, a mortal man imbued with the power of a trio of Celtic Gods, many of whom the Olympian gods beheld with some enmity. After Kyllian defeated Centaurion, Eris realized that he might make a better pawn or ally than a new adversary and she vanished back to Olympus to plot her next scheme.

"You humans are so predictable." - Eris

• Her first appearance is noted by Tony Stark; he claims that he first saw her in Afghanistan for a very brief moment not knowing her true identity. Their conversation was short and it ended with her saying, "You know what I like about you, Stark? You don’t have a heart." Then she just vanished into the thin air with misty fashion. After he was critically wounded Stark wandered more about her true nature.

• Her second appearance is after the death of Stane. Tony confronts her about past events asking was she somehow involved in all that. Her response was that he must be more specific because- "a lot of things are her fault." She then introduces herself as Eris Goddess of Discord, before vanishing once more. After the defeat of Vanko, Tony found his home in a chaotic mess and a note on his desk which said: "Discord favors the heartless." Hinting that he is favored by Goddess Eris. She appeared a few times more after that, usually to protect him stating that "nobody is allowed to decapitate her favorite mortal". She also had a few ‘interesting’ encounters with Clint Barton and Bruce Banner who aren’t that much fond of her.

It is controlled by a neural interface and is powered by DNA in the user's blood, functionally rendering it impossible to use except by Eris. The device has numerous functions with a variety of controls on its surface that can be used. It can also wirelessly control Olympian technology, triggered through a button on the back of the palm.
