Dear Reader
Hey, Hey, Heeeeeeyyyyy
Tumblr media
Long time no update, eh? I hope you're all doing well! Let me know down in the comments I miss all of you truly.
Let's get this out of the way: No, I'm not here to tell you that I won't be continuing the fic. I certainly am going to. Really I just wanted to give you guys updates on what's going on and why my hiatus took 7 plus months unexpectedly. I won't go into the nitty gritty details of it all but I will give a general idea because it may result in other hiatuses (I’m working around trying to find a way to prevent that though).
Firstly, I have been dealing with chronic pain for the past few months. I feel it in my back, knees, neck and hands mostly. Which you can imagine, prevents me from typing, drawing or doing much of anything as much as I would like to. At most I can properly type a few paragraphs at a time before my fingers want to give out. Regarding my hands, I have no idea where this stems from (certainly not me cracking my knuckles as a teenager, not that can’t be it…), but I’m doing different things and exercises that have been helping me. For the rest of my body, I couldn’t tell you but I’m working on doing better health practices to keep myself functioning.
Secondly, I’m a uni graduate (yay). And I have been STRUGGLING at finding a job in this post-pandemic economy. I’m not even gonna go into the absolute outrage I feel about this. Either way, I got a small job at a cafe that lasted a month and it put me in such a depressive state that I just recently was able to pull myself out of it (it was seriously THAT BAD, guys). And on top of that I’ve been feeling like a failure for not being able to find a job in my field. Either way, I’m in my Miles Morales era and doing my own thing.
Tumblr media
There’s more to it but those are the main ones. I have been thinking about this story NON-STOP so don’t worry I haven’t given up on it. I promise I will be back. I’m going to be writing, but I probably will be updating slower than usual. I want to improve in my writing and make sure the chapters are the best they can be for you guys to enjoy (literally I was reading Manacled and Crimson Rivers and the writing is soooo good that I was mad at myself for not being at that level even if I did have a decade long writer’s block LMAO). If you sent in any request for me to write, I haven’t abandoned you guys either! Don’t worry! I SEE YOU! I will give you your requests!
Speaking of, I am planning my next fic (literally ignore my trello I have to organize it honestly). It’s going to be Marauders Era one. I have a few ideas of what I want to do but I am excited to write it! More OCs to come! (Disclaimer: FUCK JKR, Let’s all steal the wizarding world and make it lgbtqia+ AF).
Anyways, I didn’t say all this to gain pity. Please don’t pity me. I just wanted to keep you all updated on what's going on.
It’s good to be back! I missed all of you.
(Literally i'm such an asshole for leaving ya'll on a cliffhanger like that. I am SO SORRY. Literally tf is wrong with me fr.)

tes summerfest day 2!!
secret or golden
Notes: I think this one is goofy, I had a lot of fun with it. Summerfest has been a real exercise in just writing something without agonizing over it, and this one is that all the way through. It also features character I almost never talk about.
“Enthir! You’re here, good!”
He nearly smacked himself in the face with his wardrobe door in his effort to cover himself as Onmund slammed through the door to his room.
“Onmund… do Nords not know how to knock?” Enthir replied through gritted teeth, leaning against the still open wardrobe door.
“I need to speak to you – OH!” The young man stopped dead, taking in the shirtless mer in front of him. “I’ll come back later.”
“You’re already here. Why wait? What can I do for you?” He smirked as he slowly shut the wardrobe door.
“I changed my mind, I can’t keep this.” Onmund pulled a silver amulet from the inner folds of his robes. “I can’t look at it anymore, it hurts too much. Just take it!” He held it out in front of him.
“I’m not taking it from you, Onmund.”
“Please, you don’t even have to pay me!”
“You’re going to waste all of sweet little Miela’s work to get it back to you?” The boy’s eyes grew wide, as if he hadn’t considered her opinion until that moment.
“I- I don’t want it anymore.”
“We had a deal, Onmund.” Enthir stepped forward, his voice lowering ominously. “A deal that you backed out of.” He placed his hand firmly in the center of the young man's chest and began pushing him toward the door.
“I-I”
“You wasted my time, Onmund.” With a sharp shove Onmund tumbled to the stone floor out in the empty hall. “You could try the General Store in town. We’re done here.”
“Please don’t tell Miela!” Onmund spluttered as he scrambled to his feet.
“She won’t hear a word about the matter from me.” Enthir gave the boy another sinister smirk as he shut the door, firmly locking it as Onmunds frantic footsteps echoed out of the hall. The wardrobe door swung open silently behind him.
“I’m going to kill him” The small Breton sighed as she stepped out. Enthir chuckled as he lifted her onto his desk, and pulled her into a rough kiss.
“You can kill him later.”

(I am ready to be shamed)
Tumblr media
Miela adjusted the bandana holding back her hair, giving herself a quick check in the mirror, retouching her lipstick. Then, she pulled the straps of her bodice back up, took a deep breath and headed back out.
As soon as she stepped back into the main room of the bar, she could tell that it had gotten louder. Really, a group of maybe half a dozen men, most likely a pirate crew, was settling down around a set of tables, already checking out the buffet of pretty waitresses in the room. Just like that, the bar had gone from halfway empty to busy.
But that was alright, because pirate crews always meant easy money – that was if they paid. And these guys looked like somewhere between morally upstanding and dirt-poor, a weird sort of mix between the members. Still, nothing that Miela couldn’t handle.
While her fellow waitresses might have been pretty, it was clear that Miela was the prettiest, the perkiest, the hottest, she told herself, even if business hadn’t been going great lately. Truth be told, she was famished. But if Madam Rosie would…
“Desirée. You’re fifteen minutes late. Take care of tables six and eight.”
Yes! Now things would get better. With these instructions transmitted over her earpiece, Miela picked up a few menus and headed towards her goal.
Meanwhile, across the room, Shanks ran a hand through his hair, leaning back in his seat. It had been a few weeks since leaving Windmill Village, and he still hadn’t gotten over it. His crewmates must have realized too. The way he kept tugging at the coat obscuring his missing arm wasn’t exactly subtle and they hadn’t been partying as much as they had used to. It was almost embarrassing how they’d had to nearly drag him into this bar, his trusted officers, and how they’d had to convince him at that.
But now, all the eye candy in the room was making him feel at least a little better. Maybe even a good portion. There was something for everyone here and he could tell Beckman was already searching for his first catch of the night.
Almost all of the waitresses were young, lots tall and slender, some a little more well-endowed, but none of them truly eye-catching. They were beautiful, sure, but with the amount of women the Red Hair Pirates had seen…
That was until Shanks heard a low whistle, followed by chattering from the crew. He turned around in his seat and a smile spread across his face.
One of the waitresses was aiming right for their table, her hips swaying as she walked and the menus she kept clutched to her chest doing very little to hide her generous cleavage. Noticeably shorter than her colleagues, she made up for it in confidence, and her wavy, golden hair and pink eyes weren’t exactly downsides either. Looking at Yasopp and Lucky Roux, if Beckman didn’t take the girl home tonight, one of them would clearly try. That was if Shanks didn’t one-up them first.
“Good evening,” the woman greeted them, a wide smile on her lips. “Here are your menus.”
Instead of handing them to the men straight away, she bent over and put them in the middle of the tables instead, graciously showing off her tits. The entire group was grinning wildly, throwing little whistles and comments, and Shanks found himself pulled along as well, his thoughts wandering from what had happened a week ago. No time like the present after all.
“Or can I already get you something?”
“Yeah, you,” Yasopp said, gaining him a smack from Limejuice.
“We don’t do that here,” the waitress responded in a sweet tone.
But she looked at Yasopp as she spoke, giving him a cheeky wink. Then, she let her eyes fall for a moment, directing his gaze at the menu. Shanks smirked, exchanging a telling gaze with Snake.
What a liar.
Lightly, Shanks tapped the waitress on the thigh, gaining her attention.
“Two bottles of rum, please, and seven glasses.”
“Don’t be stingy, Captain,” Hongo chuckled.
“You gotta start off slow, right? You should know that, Doc.”
“Two bottles of rum, seven glasses,” the waitress echoed, scribbling their order on a little notepad. “Right away, Captain,” she purred, brushing past his arm as she left.
Immediately, the group broke out into laughter and bickered over who got the menus in the middle of the patchworked table.
“Chaser missed his shot,” Limejuice teased, reeling in one of the leather-bound booklets.
“Don’t get used to it,” Yasopp threw back, “‘cause it’ll never happen again.”
Ignoring their antics, Beckman leaned over to Shanks. “What do you think she’s got under that skirt?” he muttered.
“Clothes-wise?” Shanks chuckled, snatching up a menu. “I’d say very little. But I’ll be damned if she doesn’t have a nice ass.”
“Shame that Gab and Punch stayed behind with Monster,” Roux commented, too busy invading Yasopp’s personal space to read along. “They would’ve loved her.”
“Oh, they will,” Snake predicted. “Look at the Captain. We’re gonna come back again.”
Shanks shook his head in feigned offense. “Only if they have good liquor. Besides, Snake… Didn’t you say sex work was illegal on this island?”
“It is,” Snake confirmed, “but that doesn’t mean that it’s not happening.”
“Aha,” Yasopp grinned, “so these special services are really what I think they are, huh?”
Shank’s eyes wandered to the back of the menu, after all the drinks, where a list of special services was noted on a little card - one that he promptly snatched out of the brochure to keep.
“Well, if a nightcap costs over 10,000 Berry…” Hongo murmured.
Shanks studied the card, the writing so small that it was almost difficult to read.
Madam Rosie’s Specials: Dressrosa Roja - 2,500 Berry Round of Blackjack - 4,000 Berry Round of Pool - 6,000 Berry Nightcap, light - 10,000 Berry Nightcap, strong - 14,000 Berry City Guide - 20,000+ Berry* * to be negotiated with the Madam, prices vary
“Now if only we knew what all of this means,” Limejuice grumbled.
“We could just order whatever and see where it takes us,” Yasopp joked.
“Not us, these are solo deals,” Shanks said. “But if you behave, I might be willing to share.”
“So, the little lady caught your eye?” Beckman asked.
“If she plays nice.”
“I’m sure she does,” Yasopp declared, eyes pinned beyond the group.
“Does what?” the waitress’s voice came from behind Shanks as she slid past him, placing a tray with two bottles and seven glasses on the table. “I do a lot of things, so you’ll have to be more specific.”
“I think,” Shanks started, snaking his arm around her legs and squeezing her thigh, “that you’ve got an idea what all of these specials mean and that you’ll kindly explain – in detail.”
“Well, you wouldn’t be wrong,” she hummed, removing his hand from her thigh and turning to face him. Graciously, she bent over until her chest was at his eye level and he made no efforts at looking away. “But if you want me to stay,” she said, lifting his chin, “you’ll have to pay for a round of Blackjack. We’re very busy today and the Madam is very strict with her bookkeeping.”
Shanks glanced over at Beckman, only to see him already holding a stack of cash, a 5,000 Berry note up top.
And that’s why you’re my first mate.
“Then tell your Madam,” Shanks muttered, “that we want as many rounds as this money can buy.”
The waitress raised her hand to take the cash but before she could, Shanks slid it between her tits, never once breaking eye contact. He was rewarded by the delicious sight of her face turning a hot pink, blushing wildly.
“As you please,” she whispered, her voice seeming to fail her for a moment.
Then, she backed away, her steps a little faster as she beelined straight for the staff room behind the bar.
“So, does she play nice?” Lucky Roux asked, a wide grin on his face.
Shanks didn’t reply but his expression said it all, the way he smirked and followed the girl’s every move… He wasn’t the only one either. Every single person at their table couldn’t help but stare at her in the long run, whether that be subtly or very obviously. Mostly, it was the latter.
“Wanna bet on her devil fruit?” Hongo asked, nudging Limejuice with an elbow.
“Devil fruit?” Yasopp and Lucky Roux echoed.
“Thought you had good vision,” Limejuice teased. “Her mouth and tongue were golden just a minute ago.”
“And they turned pink when the Captain paid her,” Hongo added, placing a couple of Berry on the table. “I say it’s emotion-based.”
“Paint-Paint Fruit,” Yasopp declared, wagering a slightly larger sum.
“Paint in your mouth?” Lucky Roux scoffed. “Sounds disgusting. I say it’s the Rainbow Fruit or something.”
“And now for the winning pick,” Snake mumbled, eyeing Limejuice as he took it upon himself to pour the drinks.
“No, no,” Limejuice quickly stammered. “I’ve gotten fruits wrong before.”
“You’re usually right though.”
“Well, if you’re so sure, why don’t you join in?” Yasopp teased, gesturing to the pile of Berry in the middle.
“You’re not getting half my winnings,” Limejuice stated, just before Snake could start betting.
“C’mon, don’t be so stingy.”
“You won the last five bets,” Lucky Roux reminded him, who himself hadn’t been as lucky in these little gambling games.
“And then lost a simple drinking contest,” Hongo muttered with a smirk.
“You spiked my drink!” Limejuice complained.
While those five were still bickering, Shanks’s eyes were trained on the bar, or rather on the staff room door behind it. The pretty waitress was standing in the doorway, talking to someone inside – most likely Madam Rosie. She was backing away now and the door opened fully. Out stepped a large and muscular woman, her name nothing like her appearance. She commanded respect, the way she looked so graceful in her well-tailored, corseted dress, but also seemed perfectly capable of smashing an unruly customer’s skull within a second.
“Doesn’t she kinda remind you of Big Mom in her younger days?” Shanks muttered, glancing over at Beckman.
“If you put her in polka dots and a tricorn.”
“A pink wig?”
“Mhm.”
Madam Rosie was looking straight at Shanks and Beckman now, then inspected the rest of the officers. But that was less important than how the waitress looked at them, with her cheeks still visibly flushed even from a distance and an excited sparkle in her eyes.
The drinks were poured now but Shanks could hardly be bothered to pay attention to them. He made a quick toast with the crew, then turned back towards the bar, just in time to see Madam Rosie whispering something in the waitress’s ear. Her excitement seemed to have dimmed a little, but that wasn’t a problem. The Red Hair Pirates were always good company, they’d have her back in no time.
Finally, the waitress came back towards them, a purse and a rectangular pouch dangling from her waist - presumably for blackjack. But that wasn’t all there was to it and they all knew it.
She sauntered towards Shanks, ready to say something, but before she could, he had his arm wrapped around her and pulled her in. As if reading his mind, she stepped past him and let herself be pulled into his lap, giggling lightly as he squeezed her ass. She draped one of her arms over his shoulder, causing the bangles around her wrists to jingle. A light spark of surprise travelled through her eyes – one lighter than the other, both a pretty pink – as if she had noticed his lack of a left arm. But if she really had, she didn’t let it on, gently tracing her fingers across the sliver of skin revealed by his open collar.
“Now that I’ve got your attention,” Shanks mumbled in a suggestive tone, “might I have your name?”
“Business or private?” the waitress echoed, gaining her many whistles and comments.
“Does there have to be a difference?”
The waitress let out something between a sigh and a chuckle, directing her eyes around the room.
“Anyone who starts working here and takes to engaging in certain services is bound to get a new name,” she explained. “It’s how we recognize each other. Like a secret language or code. I’m sure there’s something similar in the world of pirates, right?”
Various “eh”’s and shrugs travelled around the table, the waitress clearly more interesting than thinking.
“If you count the Jolly Rogers,” Yasopp commented.
“We have our epithets,” Hongo recalled. “But we don’t pick them ourselves, the Marines pick them for us.”
“Well, I didn’t pick my professional name either,” the waitress hummed. She turned her attention fully towards Shanks again, carding her fingers through his salty hair. “I guess I don’t need to ask how you got yours… Red-Haired Shanks.”
“So your Madam told you about us,” Beckman guessed.
“Not a lot. But she does give us a heads up whenever certain special guests are involved.” The waitress shifted in her position, making sure to move across Shanks’s lap in just such a way that she knew he'd  like. She turned towards the rest of the crew, tucking her head beneath Shanks’s chin. “Though I’m still a little shaky on the who’s who. I don’t get a lot of time to read the news.”
Thus started a little round of introductions, which soon turned into each of the crewmates trying to one-up each other, sharing the stories behind their epithets and their greatest feats…
----------
A lot of time went by though none of them noticed, its passage only measurable by the rum in the bottles getting fewer and fewer. All the while, Shanks was sitting pretty with the waitress in his arms, casually exploring the softness of her thighs or the curve of her waist. Being the captain, he had little to prove. That was until he heard a little static noise near his chest and the waitress stirred.
“Time’s up, gentlemen,” she quipped, running a hand along Shanks’s stubbled chin as she addressed the rest of the group. “It was lovely talking to all of you.”
But just as she tried to get up, Shanks’s grip around her tightened and she stumbled back down, surprised by how much strength he had in just one arm.
“We can buy more time, right?” he just commented.
Within the blink of an eye, a stack of Berry was gathered by contributions from everyone, and Beckman was dutifully counting the bills. The money passed from one hand to another, eventually offered to the waitress with a cool yet enticing look from Beckman. The gaze she threw back was suggestive yet content, maybe bordering on cocky. He would put her in her place later, he noted to himself. But for now, he let her brush her hand against his as she took the money and handed it to one of her colleagues passing by. It was a practiced gesture, fluid and discreet, if not for the fact that the waitress stuck her tongue out to the other girl, who made a face at her in return. Using this little distraction, Shanks grabbed the waitress by the chin and turned her back towards him.
“You still haven’t told us your name,” he reminded her.
“And we’re back where we started,” she replied, “safe for a few glasses of rum, give or take. More?”
“Always.”
The waitress gave a little wave to the bar, then turned back towards the table, only to notice…
“Hey, you haven’t been drinking at all. Have I been ruining your appetite?”
“Quite the opposite,” Shanks replied, “I’ve just been busy with more important things,” he declared, pulling her snugly against him for emphasis.
“Well, this is a bar,” she commented, picking up Shanks’s glass and lifting it to the height of his chest like a bit of bait. “What fun is it being here if you won’t drink? I’ll gladly be of assistance…”
“Only if you’ll finally tell me your name.”
“Private?”
“Private.”
The waitress hummed, a dark pink blush spreading across her cheeks. “It’s Miela,” she finally revealed, holding the glass to Shanks’s lips so he could drink. “But if you want a service, you’ll ask for Desirée.”
The night continued with stories and drinks, with snacks and laughter, and yet no one had mentioned the devil fruit bet again. It wasn’t important now anyways, with how Miela ended up dividing her attention amongst the crew, sliding right along with their tales and humor, gifting them the kindest smiles and the sweetest laughter. Time went on, until there was another buzz of static and Miela went rigid in Shanks’s arms.
“If you’ll excuse me,” she said slowly, her tone having gone cold. “We’re about to get a visit from the Marines.”
“Marines?” Lucky Roux echoed. “What do they want here?”
“Believe it or not, this is an open bar, so they can come and go as they please. Even if they’re just as unwelcome as the police.”
Around them, tables started clearing as groups of presumably pirates hurried for the back door and girls in girded-up skirts and bandanas removed themselves from chairs across the room, some retreating up a spiral staircase behind the bar, others faux-naively washing glasses or cleaning the surfaces…
“You have a separate police force?” Limejuice questioned. “Isn’t that a bit overboard?”
“It’s not when you’re trying to ban anything fun,” Miela shrugged. “Now, if you’ll let me go—”
“Why do you care about what they’ll say?” Shanks asked, a mischievous grin on his lips. “Just a second ago, you were lying on the table, letting us pour liquor into your mouth, and you didn’t care one bit.”
“Because back then it didn’t mean I could lose my job,” she replied a little shakily. “Please, you can’t be that cruel.” Another sound of static interrupted her and she held her hand to her ear, gazing over to the bar – where Madam Rosie was standing and staring at her. “And I have a responsibility to the other girls,” Miela added. “As a captain, you have to understand, right?”
Shanks let out a defeated little sigh, but he finally took his hand off her, letting her climb off his lap. As she did, she had one of her hands on his shoulder, and he could hear a quiet click coming from one of the bangles around her wrists.
“But once the Marines are gone, you’ll come back, alright?”
“As long as you can pay,” she hummed, giving him a wink.
That was when the door opened and a Marine Captain came in, tall and built like a brick, with a squad of his men in pursuit.
The momentary distraction was all that Miela needed, as the Madam’s eyes were pulled from her. Quickly, she put one hand on Shanks’s shoulder, the other on his cheek, and pulled him into a kiss, pressing her plush lips onto his. It was brief, and though Shanks tried to keep her there, she slipped out of his reach before he could react, straightening out her skirt as she hurried for the entrance.
The Red Hair Pirates watched as she made her way through the room, her demeanor calm and collected. As she brushed past one of her fellow waitresses, an exchange took place, barely even visible to the naked eye. The waitress passed a shot glass to Miela – barely even a shot glass, maybe half the size of one. Neither of them stopped or even slowed down. It was a practiced maneuver, one they must’ve played through a dozen times. As she walked on, Miela held the little glass behind her back, when something odd happened. One of her fingers, the one hovering directly above the shot glass, turned a glossy hot pink, a slimy liquid dropping down from its tip into the glass.
That was as far as the men’s eyes could follow her, then she disappeared into the crowd, only to reappear a moment later in front of the Marine Captain.
Peeking through the group of waitresses and soldiers and past the commanding presence of Madam Rosie, Yasopp made a discovery that made him furrow his brows, then laugh. Something that no one else seemed to catch.
Only a blink of an eye later, the group at the entrance dispersed, and the lower-rank soldiers were ushered to a now-empty table, led very generously by the waitresses. But Miela was nowhere among them. Instead, the Red Hair Pirates only caught a glimpse of her golden hair as she snuck up the stairs, the Marine Captain in tow.
“And there she goes,” Roux murmured sadly, reaching for the bowl of chips to cheer him up.
“I have a feeling she’ll be back,” Yasopp assured him, grinning wildly.
“What did you see?” Snake immediately asked, knowing that expression far too well.
“Our little baby isn’t playing it fair,” Yasopp quipped, leaning back in his chair and downing the rest of his glass, only to pour himself another. “And I’m feeling pretty good about my bet.”
“Alright, spit it out,” Hongo grumbled.
“Relax, Doc, alright? Once she gets back, we’ll have to ask her to work you over, damn.”
“Can’t say I’d be mad about that.”
“Alright, Chaser, what is it?” Beckman asked.
“Well, that other waitress gave her the shot glass, right?” Yasopp recalled. “And while she carried it, her finger turned into a pink liquid that she dripped into the glass.”
“Could still be the rainbow fruit,” Roux muttered, gaining him an annoyed little stare from Yasopp.
“Rainbows aren’t liquid. Anyway, she gave that little shot glass to the Marine, with only the pink stuff in it - and he drank it. And only a second later, he was sending his men away, and she could pull him with her like a little puppy.”
“What does that have to do with your bet?” Limejuice scoffed. “That doesn’t sound like paint.”
“It sounds like poison,” Shanks commented. “Or… something else.”
“Drugs?” Snake guessed.
“Well, you’re not supposed to drink paint, are you now?” Yasopp defended himself. “So, it’s basically poison. And– and poisons  small doses are basically drugs, right, Doc?”
Hongo let out an exasperated sigh. “I suppose you’re right, yeah,” he lied. Then he picked up his glass and downed it in one go.
“Good idea,” Shanks groaned, refilling his own and Hongo’s right afterwards. “While she’s gone, I say we play a drinking game. I’m far too sober for this time of night.”
----------
They played games for quite a while, taking turns at staring longingly at the stairs and getting distracted, causing them to lose their game.
Finally, Snake let out a triumphant little noise as he spotted Miela tip-toeing down into the main room again, picking and pulling at her bodice and skirt. Her hair looked slightly disheveled, though that only made her all the more attractive. She passed by Madam Rosie’s door on her way down, peeking her head in for only a moment. Then, she glanced over at the table where the rest of the Marines were gathered, by now blackout drunk, each with a waitress at their side. The Red Hair Pirates had been wondering when one of the soldiers would recognize them, but they were clearly too busy to notice them, let alone to care.
Finally, Miela returned to the Red Hair Pirates’ table, being greeted with the warmest welcome. As if it was her long-since designated seat, she let herself fall into Shanks’s lap, basking in his attention and his touch.
“What did you give to him?” Hongo asked, cutting straight to the chase.
He had a sly smirk on his face, and by the way Miela was looking at him, his gaze was piercing right through her chest, straight into her soul.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she squeaked in feigned innocence, pouting at Hongo as she snuggled further into Shanks’s chest.
“The Marine, kitten,” Beckman said lowly, turning Miela’s face towards him. “Yasopp saw that you gave him a shot glass filled with a pink liquid and now our doctor wants to know what it was that  you gave him. You won’t let him down, right?”
The longer he had spoken, the pinker Miela’s face had become, until she was blushing furiously. “O-oh, that, I—”
“Talk to him, not me.”
Obediently, Miela turned back towards Hongo. “It was nothing, really, just an extra strong nightcap.”
“Extra strong?” Snake echoed. “That’s not even on the menu.”
“I— Well— That’s because—”
“How come he gets it for free?” Shanks pouted, letting his hand wander up and down her stomach teasingly. “Weren’t we considered something like ‘special guests’ earlier?”
“Well—”
“Do it again.”
“What?”
“The liquid came from your finger, right?” Yasopp remarked, leaning on the table. “Do that again.”
“I can’t show you, it’s confidential,” Miela blurted out, though she didn’t really look panicked. In fact, it almost looked like she was enjoying this.
“But we wanna see,” Roux insisted.
“I can’t.”
“I thought you liked us.”
“I do, I really do, but—”
“They’re seastone,” Snake concluded, prompting Beckman to pick up one of the bangles around Miela’s wrist, pulling her hand up alongside it. “You can’t show us unless your Madam unlocks those for you, right?”
“Yeah,” Miela huffed, looking around the table with puppy eyes. “I wish I could show you… And there’s so much more I could do…”
“But ten thousand Berry…” Shanks sighed exaggeratedly, acting like he hadn’t paid at least double to get to hold her like this. “Can you imagine how much a round of that would cost?”
“We don’t sell them in rounds,” Miela whispered, only to squeal quietly as she felt Shanks’s fingers dip beneath her neckline.
All the while, the Red Hair Pirates watched with grins and smirks on their faces, not caring one bit about the inappropriate direction that these negotiations were headed in. And looking at Miela, she didn’t mind either, unconsciously – or consciously? – arching her back and pushing her chest into Shanks’s hand.
“Are you sure?” he asked, placing a hint of a kiss on her cheek.
“I think… we could make an exception.”
“That’s my girl.”
Miela pressed her lips together as Shanks latched on to her neck, sucking harshly, marking his prize as she tried her hardest to keep from losing her mind.
“So, what devil fruit is it?” Yasopp asked with a dirty grin, knowing that she was in no state to answer.
“Slime Slime Fruit,” Limejuice declared smugly. “Isn’t that right, princess?”
Miela just nodded, managing only a small noise of confirmation.
“And the walking devil fruit encyclopedia strikes again,” Snake chuckled. “Payout time, Beck.”
Beckman, having been tasked with guarding the betting money, dutifully split up the winnings between Limejuice and Snake, leaving Hongo, Yasopp and not-so-Lucky Roux pouting.
“Slime, huh?” Hongo muttered. “Is it an aphrodisiac?”
“Aphrodisiac?” Shanks cooed, finally, moving away from Miela’s neck and running his finger across the dark love bite he had left. “What is it, a Paramecia?”
Limejuice nodded. “Mhm, but it works like a Logia, making the user capable of fully transforming into slime. But it also has some passive effects on the user, even when they’re kept down by sea stone.”
He reached his hand out for Miela’s face but couldn’t get to her, sitting just a little too far away. But one silent exchange of words with Shanks and one moving of glasses later, Miela was pressed down with her chest against the table, looking up at Limejuice with needy eyes. He pinched her cheeks and she dutifully opened her mouth, sticking out her tongue for him. It was a hot pink, coated in a thin layer of slime that was nearly dripping onto the table.
The Red Hair Pirates marvelled at her like a rare animal, allowing Shanks to take his time admiring her ass and legs and running his hand along her spine. Hongo, meanwhile, took two of his fingers and placed them in her mouth, watching with an expression somewhere between studious and horny as she sucked on them.
“Is it just her saliva?” he asked, not once taking his eyes off her.
“No, it’s any bodily fluid, really,” Limejuice shrugged. “It’s just that some are stronger than others. Her saliva is the second strongest, and I can only imagine that her cum would be the best, but the encyclopedia wasn’t exactly detailed on that.”
“Wow, you really memorized that page, huh?” Yasopp teased him.
“Let’s just say I’ve dreamed about it.”
Hongo pulled his fingers out of Miela’s mouth and she released them with a wet pop, licking her lips and looking up at him in search of praise.
“That doesn’t look very pink,” he commented, holding his fingers up to the light and licking them clean. “Is that all you can do?”
Immediately, Miela’s pleading gaze increased tenfold and she wildly shook her head. A quiet yelp escaped her as Shanks pulled her back into a sitting position, holding her in place just beneath her bust.
“It’s the sea stone, right?” he hummed. “You can do better, I know you can, baby.”
Miela nodded frantically, her breathing shallow, her heart thumping in her chest. Limejuice, meanwhile, was smirking suggestively to himself, just waiting to get out his trump card. Finally, Beckman prompted him to spit it out.
“The Slime Slime Fruit feeds off pleasure, mainly the pleasure its user pulls out of others, but also their own. The aphrodisiac gets stronger as pleasure builds up and the slime’s color changes to match.”
Lucky Roux grinned. “Well, the way that Marine ran after you, you’re really enjoying yourself, aren’t you, sweetie?”
“Yeah,” Miela breathed. “Couldn’t have done it without you. All of you, that is,” she added, letting her eyes wander once around the group.
“Greedy, aren’t we?” Shanks teased, letting his finger dance along the top of her bodice, grazing her skin. “Sounds like one man just wasn’t enough for you, huh? Don’t look so surprised; it’s very clear what you two did,” he muttered, lightly pressing down on a hickey just below the hem of her bodice. “Just say it: Was he enough?”
“... No,” Miela whispered. “I want more. Need more.”
“That’s a good girl. Then what do you say we get out of here, give you a tour of our ship?”
Immediately, Miela went stiff again, though just a little, her words barely a hint of resistance as she said: “I don’t do out-calls.”
“Who said that?” Roux scoffed.
“Don’t want to or don’t get to?” Yasopp asked.
“I’m very important to the business,” Miela explained, trying to keep her voice steady as Shanks kneaded her breast and Beckman was trailing his large hand up her thigh beneath the table. “Madam Rosie would hate to see me go, so— Ah— She doesn’t let me go with pirates or seafarers.”
“Do you want to?” Hongo asked, eyes pinned on the way her flesh gave in beneath his captain’s touch, molding right into his hand.
“Yeah,” she whispered. “Yeah, I want to. Please take me with you.”
“Then I’ll talk to your Madam and see what I can do,” Shanks declared with a smile, pressing a sneaky kiss to her collarbone. “Don’t worry, I can be very convincing. – Hey, Beck, be a good first mate and take over for me, will you?”
“With pleasure, Captain,” Beckman hummed, picking Miela up with ease and moving her over to his lap.
As Shanks left for the door behind the bar, Beckman pulled her snug against him with her back against his chest and her legs spread over his thighs.
One of his hands made its way under her skirt, holding her thigh just inches away from her core as Roux held her other knee in place, just for good measure. Beckman’s other hand continued where Shanks had left off, diving into her cleavage, tugging ever so slightly at the strings holding her bodice together.
“Alright, kitten, you’re gonna listen and be good for me, alright?” he muttered, letting his eyes wander across his crewmen as if he was instructing them on how these things were done. Truth be told, he was the most experienced at the table. “We came to this place because the Captain hasn’t been himself lately. He lost his arm, I’m sure you’ve noticed by now. So we took him here to take his mind off things and it seems like it worked. Sounds to me like he’s really into you, so you’re gonna be good to him and work the stress out of him, alright?”
Miela nodded, unconsciously grinding against Beckman’s lap. But he held her in place only a second later, letting his finger graze over the fabric of her thong.
“No, no, not yet. The Captain comes first. He needs someone to help him relax, take the reins for him, just let him let go and forget about the world for a while. Can you do that?”
“Yes, yes,” Miela chanted, her voice nearly failing her. “Just get those shackles off of me and I’ll do all that and more, I promise.”
“As soon as we’re on the ship, don’t worry, baby. And if you’re good, you’re gonna get a reward. Will you be good?”
“Yes, I will, daddy.”
----------
Only a few minutes later, the Red Hair Pirates were on their way back to the ship, alcohol and excitement coursing through their veins. Miela was sitting happily in Roux’s arms, feeding him the rest of the snacks they had stolen from the table.
Her eyes went wide the moment she spotted the ship, taking in every single detail and listening to everything the men told her about the vessel, even if her mind was in a very different place.
Finally, she was taken under deck, into a small hallway lined with doors. Roux placed her down, letting his hand trace up from her ass to her shoulders as he did.
“Easy, Roux, go wait your turn,” Shanks teased, a bright grin on his face.
He offered his hand to Miela, more of a formality than anything since they both knew what was to come. Still, she took it, and let out a quiet yelp as he pulled her closer.
“Alright, baby, remember,” he whispered, “if you want out, you just have to say it. Got that?”
“Got it. But I don’t want out, I want in.”
Shanks huffed as the rest of the crew chuckled. Within only a second, Miela found herself pushed towards the end of the hallway, towards a door with a weathered, gilded sign.
She opened the door without even being asked to, knowing that Shanks was behind her and leading her on. Giving in fully to her new situation, she stepped into a cabin, simple yet somewhat elegant.
But she didn’t have a lot of time to admire it as she felt Shanks come up behind her, pulling her in by her breast. She hadn’t really noticed it while they were sitting down for the most part, but all of the pirates were so much bigger than she was. Her head rested against Shanks’s chest as she came undone under his touch and she could feel his arousal pressing against her back.
“Eager, are we?” she breathed, whining as he brushed a finger over her nipple, further straining the strings on her bodice. “And you haven’t even tasted me yet.”
“I think it’s time to change that,” Shanks growled.
He pulled his hand out from underneath her clothes, then spun her around and pushed her towards the bed. Eagerly, she followed his lead until her legs hit the edge of the bed and she fell backwards, letting out a yelp.
Before she could gather herself again, Shanks was hovering over her, propped up on one arm as he kissed his way up from her cleavage to her face, drawing the sweetest moans out of her.
That was when he paused, his eyes glancing over to where his left arm had to be, as if he had forgotten for a moment. Well, Miela was determined to make him forget. All of his worries, she would erase them.
Swiftly, she pulled her arms out from underneath his chest and threw them around his neck, pulling him down into a kiss. Within merely a second, her tongue slipped past his lips, softly meeting his. The kiss turned deeper, wilder, and Shanks groaned as he could feel a familiar heat build up throughout him. When Miela pulled away, he keened at getting her back.
Instead, she placed a hand over his lips, tracing his jawline with the other before tugging at her bangles.
“I promise, it’ll be worth it,” she whispered, but she really didn’t have to.
Quickly, Shanks let himself fall on the bed next to her, then crawled up further on the mattress, posing himself like a picture from an erotic magazine. He beckoned her over and she followed as if he had her on a leash, pulling her in by the collar. The thought alone had her whimpering, fantasizing to a point where she slipped out of reality. Though it was only for a blink of an eye, when she returned to the present, she was nearly sitting on top of Shanks and he had his finger hooked into one of her bangles.
“Is it this one?” he asked, his voice hoarse with arousal.
Miela nodded frantically, looking up at him frantically. Suddenly, a surge of red lightning cracked within Shanks’s hand and the bangle sprung apart, shattered into pieces. A shriek left Miela at the sight, distracting her just long enough for her to miss the way he did it on her other wrist. But what she clearly didn’t miss was the way the tension flooded out of her body, a moan spilling over her lips.
Immediately, Shanks pulled her into a ferocious kiss, his tongue picking up as much of the sweet aphrodisiac in her mouth as he could, clinging to her as if he were a starving predator and she his prey. He let out a little noise of desperation and his hand twitched along her spine, clearly conflicted on whether to keep holding her or to tear her clothes off. One hand just wasn’t enough.
That was when Miela remembered Beckman’s words. Why would she have him choose?
She pulled away from him, her torso turning fully into slime as she phased right through his arm. An expression of worry and betrayal made its way onto Shanks’s face but it wouldn’t last for long.
As he still struggled to get his words out, Miela’s body went back to normal and, with one precise pull, she opened the bow holding together her bodice, her breasts quickly spilling into the space she had given them. Swift, practiced movements took her bodice apart fully, revealing all of her chest to him.
Shanks practically surged forwards, no longer able to hold himself back. A characteristic blush started tinting all of his body and his aching cock tented his pants, the aphrodisiac clearly taking full effect. He pulled her in by the small of her back, placing sloppy kisses all over her breasts before taking one nipple into his mouth and sucking hard.
Miela whined, digging her fingers into his hair and holding him close, her cunt clutching around nothing beneath her skirt. But not yet, she thought, not yet. The Captain came first, she told herself.
So, she gathered all of her leftover focus, as hard as it was as droplets of slime were leaking from her nipples, brought on by her pleasure. But she forced herself to concentrate, tugging at Shanks’s hair to get his attention. He looked up at her, eyes almost black as his pupils were blown wide by desire.
“Lie down for me,” she breathed, and he listened without another word, his cock twitching in anticipation.
As he laid back, she crawled over him, her body always just an inch from his. Then, before he could react, four pink tendrils spawned from her back, latching on to his shoulders and legs and holding him down. He moaned at the sensation, feeling the slime soak through his clothes and wetting his skin, sending shivers down his spine.
“Relax, daddy,” Miela purred, undoing his shirt buttons ever so slowly. “Let your baby take care of you.”
Shanks writhed beneath her, though not enough to break free.
“You’ve already done so much for me,” she whispered. “Let me make it up to you.”
Her hands wandered up and down his stomach and he moaned, all sense of logic and worry escaping him.
“Please, baby, please,” he breathed, his words getting lost in little whimpers as she placed little kisses across his chest, travelling lower and lower, but turning right around before she got to where he needed her.
Finally, she moved back, looking unbearably pretty as she sat between his legs. Keeping her eyes locked with his, she pressed a hand against his clothed erection and he came, his entire body going rigid as he shuddered, pleasure washing over him.
Miela’s eyes were filled with adoration and desire as she watched him go limp, knowing that it would only last for a moment. Just a few seconds later, he was getting hard again, and she ran her fingers up and down his happy trail, finally hooking them into his waistband. She pulled his pants and his underwear down in one go, her mouth watering at the sight of his cock.
Looking up at him for permission, she licked a long stripe from the base up to the tip, then wrapped her lips around his dick, bathing in his deliciously sinful sounds. She gave him a few seconds to calm down, then she started bobbing up and down, taking more of him into her mouth each time. It didn’t take long for her to take him all the way to the base, his cock forming a bulge in her throat. How the hell she could do that Shanks didn’t know, but he frankly didn’t care either, the sight just far too hot to him as his hips kept bucking off the mattress – and the way it felt, all hot and slick… He could feel his orgasm building up quickly, his mind turning to mush as he felt himself slip in and out of reality.
“‘M close,” he gasped, his voice barely serving him anymore. “I’m close, baby, so close—”
The tendrils barely had to hold him down anymore; he didn’t even think about resisting. This was bliss, pure bliss, even if he couldn’t hold her. Miela hummed against his cock in approval, sending vibrations through his entire body. When she started gently massaging his balls, it was all over for him and he came again, white hot pleasure taking away his vision and almost knocking him out.
Miela was clearly very pleased with herself, making a show of swallowing and sticking out her tongue, even if he couldn’t see it. She pressed a kiss to the tip of his cock, then crawled upwards to lay beside him, her slimy tentacles gently massaging his chest and limbs. Slowly, Shanks’s eyes fluttered open, being met with Miela looking at him in adoration.
“How do you feel?” she asked, softly tracing his jaw.
Shanks’s heart was pounding in his chest, his answer mindless as he said: “More. Please, just one more, I wanna see you come for me baby.”
Miela let out an excited giggle and she gave him a quick kiss before sitting up again and stripping out taking off the rest of her clothes.
“I knew you had it in you,” she cooed, moving over to straddle him.
Shanks used what little strength he had left to push himself up and put his hand on her hip, breathing shallowly as one of her tentacles eagerly pumped his dick, Miela fingering herself at the same rhythm. Droplets of slick dripped down her thighs and onto his hips, making him shiver with anticipation.
As soon as he was hard, Miela licked her fingers clean and lowered herself onto his dick, whining at just how full she felt. Shanks fell back onto the mattress, the way her walls clenched around him taking him to the brink of overstimulation. He was sure that he could’ve come from the feeling of being inside her alone if he hadn’t been so spent from his two orgasms before.
But he wanted her, he needed her, and so he bucked his hips up into her, making her gasp. He reached out for her and she understood, leaning over him and steadying herself on either side of his chest as she started moving her hips against his at an increasingly fast pace. Quickly, he pulled her bandana off her head and ran his fingers through her hair, delighted to find a small pair of mouse ears underneath. This woman was full of surprises, he thought at the back of his brain, but yet another surprise made his mind go fully void.
One of Miela’s tentacles had made its way down to his ass, stretching him out gradually with every movement of his and Miela’s hips. He groaned in pleasure, tangling his fingers into her golden locks as he held her close. It didn’t take long for the tentacle to slip inside fully, mirroring the way his cock was pushing into Miela’s cunt. He was sure that he could feel the contour of his own dick against his stomach as Miela moved against him, and just the thought of him being just as full sent him spiralling, pushing him over the edge as he came harder than he had ever come before.
The tsunami of pleasure inside of him just didn’t want to stop, but he could faintly tell that Miela had reached  her climax too, impaling herself on his dick like a creature in heat and pushing her head into his hand. Her cum dripping down his shaft and over his hips was the last thing he felt, completely exhausted and in utter bliss.
Meanwhile, Miela panted as she came down from her high, placing her head on his chest to rest for a moment. His heartbeat was fast for quite a while, then became slower as his breathing calmed down, his body falling into a sound sleep. A tiny part of her was just a little disappointed that their time together was over, but most of all she was proud, proud that she had made a man like him feel this good.
Carefully, she climbed off of him, whimpering quietly at the loss of his dick inside of her. After all of that, she felt so empty. She tiptoed around the room and cleaned Shanks up to the best of her conscience and ability. Then, she did the same to herself and put her clothes back on – admittedly a little haphazardly, not really caring how she looked in the dead of night. Finally, she opened the door and slipped out as quietly as possible, careful not to wake him, her scarlet lover, forever her captain in her heart.
But as soon as the door was closed, she almost shrieked when she saw a figure in the hallway, leaning against the wall right next to the door and smoking a cigarillo. He brought his hand down over her mouth before she could scream, soothingly running his fingers through her hair. There was an air of intimidation about him, the way he blended into the darkness with his dark clothes and his raven-black hair with the few gray streaks. But most of all, he looked proud.
“Beckman,” Miela gasped, looking up at him with large eyes.
“By the sound of it, you really made him feel good,” he hummed, blowing a cloud of smoke into the air. It was an expensive tobacco, not like the stuff that most patrons at the bar smoked. The kind where you could smell the pleasant addiction even without tasting it. “Is he asleep?”
Miela nodded, her muscles tensing up in the most delicious way.
“Good girl… But you didn’t forget about your reward through all that, did you?”
“No, of course not,” she whispered, that coil in her stomach already winding up again.
“Are you ready for me?”
“Anytime, daddy.”
“That’s what I thought.”
And just like that, she felt his hand between her shoulder blades, pushing her into the next door over.
The rest of the night became a frantic blur, with Miela passing from one arm to another, exiting one room just to enter the next… It was wild, it was frantic, and the exhaustion was tugging at her limbs, but she had never felt better, never felt so alive. Those words from Limejuice travelled through her mind at some point, about how her devil fruit was keeping itself fed through pleasure. With the way she felt that night, up until now, she must have been starving.
By the time that the sun came up, Miela was lying on one of the beds in the infirmary, panting with pleasure as she passed out from the exhaustion, her clothes long since discarded in some corner of the ship that she couldn’t care to remember. Hongo was hovering over her, dutifully tying his hair back as he grabbed a syringe from the side table. His work for the night was far from over.
----------
When Miela woke up the next morning – or what was presumably the next morning to her – her body felt like mush. At the same time, she had never been as well-rested and relaxed. A slight sway of her world told her that she was still on the Red Hair Pirates’ ship and her cheeks went pink as she remembered the events from the night.
She pushed herself up from her bed, a thin blanket falling off her torso. Half of her had expected herself to be naked, but she wasn’t – in fact, she was wearing a shirt that was most definitely not hers. It was large and made of cotton, smelling heavily of sea salt.
“Morning, princess,” she heard a familiar voice say from across the room.
A smile spread across her face as she blinked her eyes open and found Hongo watching her from his desk in what could only be the infirmary. He was holding a large cup of coffee, observing as she let her eyes wander around the room.
“I was wondering when you’d be waking up. You were enjoying yourself, clearly. Kept me up all night.”
“Sorry,” Miela muttered, her mouse ears drooping down ever so slightly.
“Eh,” Hongo shrugged, “at least I got something out of it. Do you want breakfast?”
“No, no, I don’t wanna be a bother, I—”
“You’d be more of a bother by saying no since Lucky Roux said I’d only get me my breakfast once you get yours. Lazy Roux more like it, he just doesn’t wanna walk here twice.”
“That’s… Alright then. Maybe just a little bit.”
“A little bit – you need a proper meal, not just something to nibble. With the amount of exercise you got last night, you can’t tell me you’re not hungry.”
“I— Well—”
“See? You’re getting a proper meal. Alright?”
“Yes, Doctor.”
“Good.”
As Hongo swiftly walked over to the exit and stuck his head out into the hallway, Miela looked around the room some more, finally getting caught on a window.
Suddenly, she paused. She rubbed her eyes and crawled forwards to get a better angle, not wanting to believe what she was seeing. Her weird headache wasn’t really making it easier. But when reality finally settled in, she shrieked, hopping off the bed and sprinting across the room to cling on to Hongo’s arm.
“Hey, hey,” he called, “you’re not supposed to get all riled up after surgery!”
“Surgery?!” Miela echoed, but she was promptly ignored, picked up by the waist and put back down on her bed.
“What’s wrong? What are you so upset about?”
“What’s wrong?! Hongo, there’s no land! We’re on the open sea!”
“So? That’s where pirates are supposed to be.”
“You kidnapped me!”
“Kidnapped? No, we gave you a free vacation.”
Steps came trampling down the hallway and, one by one, the other men that had swept Miela off of her feet last night came piling into the room.
“Ah, so she noticed!” Shanks concluded with a grin. “How are you doing, princess?”
“I— Panicked?! I’m not supposed to be here!”
“Now who said that?” Snake questioned.
“My Madam!”
Beckman, meanwhile, pushed his way past the other officers and sat down next to Miela on the bed, pulling her into his lap and soothingly rubbing her back.
“Well, we could just put you back,” Yasopp lied, picking at his sash in feigned disinterest, which would have been comical if Miela hadn’t been so worried.
“But you’d be missing out on a lot,” Roux added. “Living off of tips and a lousy salary, is that really how you wanna live?”
“No, but—”
“Well, what more do you want?” Limejuice smirked. “Chances are we could give it to you.”
Miela’s eyes sparkled at those words and her heart was beating heavily in her chest, a change in pace from the light yet frantic rhythm of her worry. Still, there was  a persistent seed of doubt in her mind, something that everyone else just had to know. By the way they were looking at her, they must have had this planned out for a while. Had they perhaps been watching her from afar for days? Had they decided they would keep her from the moment Shanks had had her in his grasp for the first time?
“Besides,” Hongo muttered, taking a casual sip from his coffee, “now that you don’t have that tracker in you anymore, you’re free to go wherever you want.”
A sound somewhere between a gasp and a shriek jumped out of Miela’s throat and she reached up for her ear, only to feel the bumpy profile of sutures right behind it.
“How did you even know?” she breathed.
“The Captain could hear it while you were in his lap,” Beckman explained, calmly rubbing her arms. “The little noise of static from the earpiece that was connected to it. Fancy bit of technology but once it’s out, it’s out.”
“It wasn’t even that deep below the skin,” Hongo muttered. “Sloppy work if you ask me.”
“Well yeah,” Miela breathed, “anything else would be expensive.” She was still trying to process everything, her heart and body working hard to overrule her mind. With every second, the last bits of logic became quieter and quieter. “So, what are you saying?” she stammered. “You kidnapped me and did surgery on me so I would join your crew?”
“Not join our crew, no,” Shanks chuckled. “As far as I know, you can’t fight, and you don’t look like you’re fit for any hard labor that has to be done on a ship.”
“Oh.”
“But then again…” He mumbled, a wide grin spreading on his face. “We could probably keep you as a pet.”
Immediately, Miela went beet-red, her heart damn near jumping out of her chest with a gasp of surprise. She stared at the Captain as his officers cheered and whistled, Beckman just silently holding her close. That was when her last bit of resistance snapped.
“Do I get a collar?” she breathed.
The men broke out into laughter, Beckman rewarding her with a kiss to the temple, just inches away from her surgery wound.
“The prettiest one we can find,” Shanks promised.
What followed now was a little discussion between the men of what color would most suit her, if they should go for sturdy leather or something more decorative, if they should add a leash… Miela basked in their attention, until her mind returned with full force and a lightning strike of fear made her body go rigid.
“W-wait!” she blurted out.
“What, you don’t like ruffles?” Roux teased.
“No, it’s— That’s not what I meant, I give you full freedom to pick on that but— There are some people out there who won’t be very happy that I’m with you now.”
“Like who?” Shanks chuckled.
“Don’t tell me you fucked a Celestial Dragon,” Yasopp scoffed.
“Ew, no!” Miela gasped. “Just… high-ranking Marines, for example.”
“Ah,” Snake smirked. “Madam Rosie’s special guests, huh?”
“Well, I was in for the money on those but… Well…”
“Just say it, baby,” Beckman encouraged her. “They’re just Marines, nothing we can’t handle.”
“Vice Admiral Borsalino will most likely be coming after me.”
That was when the men broke out into laughter, Shanks getting out a simple “Oh, just him.”
“He can be reasoned with, don’t worry, kitty,” he declared. “Get settled in, we’ll keep an eye out for him.”
With those words, he gave her a friendly wink, then pushed his way out of the room.
“You got anyone higher?” Limejuice giggled.
“Well, he’s in line to become Admiral I hear, so… Actually, there’s— Um—”
“Yeah?”
“Well… monkeydgarp.”
Beckman nearly choked on his own spit, losing his composure for a moment before he broke out laughing.
“WHO?!” the rest of the crew demanded to know almost in unison.
“The Hero of the Marines, Monkey D. Garp,” Beckman muttered, shaking his head with a chuckle. “I can’t say I’m surprised. How many nightcaps did it take?”
“Fewer than for Borsalino,” Miela mumbled. “But it was only one time!” she then added more loudly. “I wanna be very clear that it was only one time. So, no, he will not be throwing cannonballs at you, and he will not be giving a damn about whether I left or not. Neither will I be giving a damn if he does get upset about me leaving – though he does have incredible stamina for a man of his age, it needs to be said— Ow!” she gasped as Beckman lightly smacked her over the head, making her chuckle.
Meanwhile, the other people in the room were going through various stages of grief, with Yasopp covering his face and moaning about he’d never be able to look at Garp the same way again and Limejuice regretting that he had ever asked.
One by one, they started slinking out of the room and Miela was left behind with Hongo and Beckman, the former sighing under his breath that he’d have to check her for mental illnesses.
“You can be glad you still have everyone wrapped around your finger from last night,” Beckman murmured. “But next time you pull something like that, I might have to think of a punishment for you,” he said, pulling her off his lap and setting her back down on the bed.
“I’ll be looking forward to it, daddy,” Miela replied in a sugary sweet tone, only for him to lightly smack her in the shoulder.
“Go to sleep for a few more hours. You’re clearly not in your right mind yet.”
He kissed her on the forehead, then left the infirmary to go back to work. This left Hongo as the only one still in the room with her. Hongo, who was currently pouring a generous amount of rum into his coffee.
“I’m starting to think that you’ll be stealing more than just my sleep. You’re also taking my sanity.”
“Well, as long as I can give you something in return,” Miela purred.
“Yeah, you better.”

Any new factoids about your OCs that you haven't shared here yet? I miss hearing about them
i miss talking about them 😭😭😭
Jitterbug is SUPREMELY claustraphobic, and absolutely hates enclosed spaces. When she gets her own den in the Junkyard, it's in an old fridge that's had it's door broken off, so it's very open and airy. she adores how much space she has.
Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer have a little rivalry with the Con Quintet. Granted, it's very one-sided, because the Con Quintet don't really pay attention to the twins, but M&R THINK they have a rivalry.
Speaking of the Con Quintet... Charcoal, Pebble, and Dove grew up with a family in Manchester, so they each have a varying thickness of a Manchester accent, because i think the three of them + Anomaly's New York accent would have some very fun conversations
The Ghost Siblings!!!! Hades is the sibling who's able to manifest himself the most, so he usually can be spotted on days that are not Halloween. He becomes very close with Munkustrap, and will sit and listen to his stories for hours.
Isis helped to make MIstoffelees' rainbow jacket. Tugger asked for her help, and they worked together over the course of a few weeks to finish it.
Quasi has a little chest in his space in the den where he hoards all sorts of ribbon and fabric clippings. He'll sometimes visit Isis and will ask if she has any offcuts she doesn't need, and if she does, he'll tuck them all in his box. He doesn't tell anyone what they're for, but when Antoinette finally joins the tribe, Quasi presents the chest to him, and everyone realizes why he's been collecting them.
Miela doesn't officially move into the Junkyard until after her humans pass away. It's a few years after she and Coricopat first meet, and it's very difficult for her, but she decides rather than stick around the farm, it's time for her to reside in the city permanently.
Hestia's first time doing the Invitation happens during the ball when Old Deuteronomy is Chosen. It's an extremely emotional moment for her, because not only is she losing her grandfather, but she's beginning to step into Mistoffelees' shoes, like they've been preparing for.
Garbo's favorite of her grandkittens is Tumblebrutus. He reminds her so much of Gus, and listening to the stories her mate tells, it's almost as though she's getting to watch her son grow up. She says that to Asparagus once, and he has to hide his tears in his mother's fur.

Happy holidays to all!

For: @sleepytime-moga ! Naomi and John (just hanging out)
“You’ve gotta be fuck-ing kidding me,” John says, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Really?”
“What? He deserved it.”
“I’m not saying he didn’t, but Jesus Christ, maybe be a bit more subtle.”
Naomi examines a hangnail while sitting opposite to John. “Wow, John. I thought you knew me well.”
He sighs, half-laughing. “Yeah, well, guess you and Lincoln really are a perfect match, then.”
She finally cracks a smile.
The two had been talking for upwards of an hour, about anything and everything— it mostly came back to Lincoln, all things considered— and sharing all kinds of anecdotes from whatever came to mind. In this case, it was over Naomi throwing water in some Dixie mobster’s face.
“Well, I guess that’s one way to handle racism.”
“Got any better ideas, white boy?”
John shrugs. “I’m not judging the emotion, I’m just judging the method.”
“Bold coming from you, Mister LSD.” She crosses her arms. “Least I didn’t make him trip balls before splashing boiling water in his face.”
“Hey, that was a one-time thing.”
“Right, right. Just like all of this is a one-time thing, too.”
The two crack grins, John downing part of the bourbon and pushing the bottle towards her. Naomi takes it.
“Merry fuckin’ Christmas to that asshole.”
“Yeah, Merry fucking Christmas.”
For: @santademikey ! Florence and Danny (romantic)
You know you’re awful nervous about telling your old man about Danny’s admittedly harebrained idea of getting married. You’re over the moon, sure, but Dad might not be and that’s the issue. You clear your throat as you sit down in front of Olivia, fake-smiling.
Aunt Olivia— if you can call her that, you never know with her— has that slight-smile on her face that indicates she knows something you don’t. Or rather, she knows what you’re thinking and you don’t like it.
“Miss Marcano,” Danny pipes up, taking her hand and shaking it. He’s more jittery than normal and stands behind you, hands on your shoulders, quivering. For a boy who can race like nobody’s business, he sure had lost his nerves. “I, uh, well, this may shock you.”
“What is it, dear?” She’s speaking to you. Shit, she’s speaking to you.
“We, uh, we have a big announcement to make—”
The door opens and you look up.
Shit.
“Mister Marcano,” Danny nods, polite. He offers his hand, and Sal takes it for a second. “Pleasure to see ya again.”
Dad nods at your fiancé. “Am I interruptin’ something?” He has an eyebrow cocked, playing along with the game. He looks bemused but you know he ain’t. He’s likely pissed.
“Sit down Sal, you’re just in time.”
You almost curse Olivia out for that.
“Please, go on.”
You take a deep breath. It’s better if you break the news.
“We- uh, Danny an’ I- we got engaged.” You can’t help but beam. But your Dad…
For: @floating-space-jellyfish ! Miela and Danny (romantic)
Miela’s taking Danny’s hand, bouncing her leg in excitement. Nerves, too, but excitement mostly. She’d never gone racing, let alone with someone as skilled as Danny. This wasn’t a traditional race; the only opponent was the wind.
Her hair is flying all over the place and she keeps spitting strands out. Danny’s laughing wildly, whipping around corners at breakneck speed. The sun is shining.
Neither are speaking— no point in it, they couldn’t hear each other— but both had smiles on their faces. Shit, when’s the last time Danny felt like this, like he was a little kid again? Miela made him beam like he did back when his Ma was alive. Hell, with her around, Danny was almost certain his Ma was still around, maybe watching from somewhere high up. He presses the gas down. Maybe if he goes fast enough, they can reach the sky like his Da used to tell him.
Danny grasps her hand back, smiling at her.
This girl really made him happy.

💋 from the birb !!
send 💋 for a kiss on the lips // *not accepting. ( @offsct )
it was raining. the beautiful sort of rain, one that entailed spring and the new - life that came with it, a cleansing sort of drizzle that meant fresh starts and NEW BEGINNINGS. and as that large, golden wing guards the two of them from the downing precipitation of this warm season day he closes his eyes, enjoying the warmth of this presence next to him, of that hand entwined with his own, of that wonderful feeling of being LOVED.
the golden - being opens those eyes to a shift beside him, and he glances to his heart - light as he lifts her fingers with his own, putting them upon his lips as he begins to speak, a caressing sort of inflection that echoes his comfort, his care. perhaps it is the rain that makes him speak out of impulse, of instinctual want as he looks back to the hushed forest that sang with the weather.
“ how about you run away with me, Xayah ? we could run far far away and never look back, and i’d kiss you awake every morning as you complain about how i cling too much during my sleep, and our children will clamor around us for their own morning kiss from their mother and we could be happy. ”
she opens those lips to speak, but he hushes her as he places a soft, warm kiss upon her cheek before putting them upon her lips, a soft smile upon his face as he shakes his head, a look of understanding brimming his bittersweet gaze, his wishes for her safety, for the lifting of her responsibilities and burden going unsaid in the pit of his stomach.
“ but i’m already happy being here with you, miela, i am already happy. i just want you to be safe. ”

Christmas in California
23rd
A really snotty day! Mary Queen of Scott’s was soooo good. The best film I’ve seen in a while! Dinner at a Pho restaurant, I had a BBQ chicken dish. With my chop sticks I had to leave a few sneaky grains of rice, but I’m still learning. We searched chopstick etiquette at the table to fulfill our curiosity. What did we learn? -NEVER POINT AT ANYTHING WITH YOUR STICKS. The drive home turned int a spontaneous Christmas light search around the neighbourhood. The highlight is a tie between seeing real life dear in front of a beautifully lit house. Or, a Christmas light off of a house with snowmen for garden gnomes vs a house with large inflatable pigs and abominable snowmen. Back home we stared watching The Florida Project, the aesthetic of that film is so cool with all its bright coloured buildings and the kids are so believable.

24th
Puzzling with Alia and a last minute trip to target while Miela and Vince travelled back from their glamping getaway. I decided to blast the Christmas songs to shock me into the Christmassy spirit. Then, the evening was dinner at Fred and Laura’s. It was paella and it was SO GOOD! Everyone was there and we played games and sang a few Christmas carols. I learnt that they do NOT call it ‘Chinese whispers’ here, instead they call it ‘telephone’. Just before bed a quick England FaceTime to see the Father Christmas present unwrapping. So fun to be part of the madness and to begin Christmas Day together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
25th
Miela woke me up with an ‘it’s Christmas’. I was straight on FaceTime with England again, then it was presents time! We headed to Dillon Beach to kick a ball and chase the waves. I wore a Father Christmas hat the whole time. I was the most festive human on the beach, coming in second out of the mammals to a dog. Christmas dinner was at Adam’s house, we had roast ham and potatoes. I’m loving the left over ham sarnies! Of course games were played. GuGa GaMe is proving to be very popular!

26th
Woke up and found out it was a hike day and that we were leaving in 15 minutes. We went to Point Reyes for a walk through the woods leading to a meadow with friends. We had a lil picnic and I saw my first coyote! Miela and I carried a large piece of tree bark from the meadow back to the car. The evening was spent at a boxing bay bash with loads of friends and new people to meet. So much good cheese, chicken and one fantastic Bloody Mary!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
27th
Quite a chill morning, then... puzzling! We went to puzzle with Heidi and stayed for an E.T. screening. Got back at 9.30pm, then Alia and I puzzled until past midnight listening to the podcast ‘Getting Curious with Johnathan Van Ness’ we’re hooked!
Tumblr media
28th
Really dragging out this Christmas post! Started the day with a game of basketball on the street with Miela’s new ball. Then we did a MAJOR house clean & tidy. Nina and Jim arrived (Alia’s aunt and uncle from Honoka’a, Hawaii). We finished one of many puzzles then headed out to the cinema to see Mary Poppins. I loved the film, it payed tribute to the original without copying it and was just so much fun to watch. Dinner was at Leslie’s, we had pork and sweet potatoes, yum yum yum! Nina and Jim had brought some dried rare white pineapple from their land, it was the best dried fruit I’ve ever had. I would love to try a wet white pineapple one day! Finally we played a game called ‘Wise and Otherwise’- fun, would recommend to a friend. Then it was time to start another puzzle- surprise surprise!
Tumblr media
Time to end the post with a quote from Alia (speaking in a posh English accent) “From one Mary to another, so much has happened”.

7679 words!
The next major portion of my Souls & Switches series- Alien Swarm! As usual, this version isn’t edited because it’s fucking late, but the eventual ao3 release will be.
So, enjoy the new and improved Alien Swarm everybody!
“I don’t like this Elena…”
“We don’t have a choice.” Rolling her shoulders, she reaches to brush a knuckle carefully over Celio’s thorax. It’s been weeks, nearly a month, since their father and Miela disappeared and they’re just- they’re out of options. “This’ll work.” Her daemon huddles closer to her ear, his tiny claws scratching at it worriedly as she slips off the motorcycle they may have stolen. Maybe.
Again, out of choices.
“I hope so,” he says, gently biting at her scalp while she pulls the canister of chips out of the saddlebag and turns to stare at the empty building where this meeting is taking place. “I really do.”
~
It’s more brightly lit than they expect, and on the small side. More an old garage than anything. But the guy they’ve arranged to speak with is there waiting, a blue jay on his shoulder.
“You’re late,” she announces when they walk in, she and her other half- Kevin, his name is Kevin- both looking them over with a critical eye.
“Traffic,” is their explanation. It’s a lie, they just had to build up a bit of strength before coming in, and the way the other teen’s eyebrow raises says he knows it, but they aren’t called out. She squares her shoulders, stands up straight, and hopes they can’t see the fidgeting beetle in amongst her hair. “Got some things I’m looking to sell.” The blue jay looks her over again, then chuckles.
“Somebody’s posturing,” she says and Elena tenses. Kevin smirks. “First time working with the big boys?” Eyes narrowing, Elena’s about to make a rude comment back when her contact shoves off the bright green car he’d been leaning against since before they got there, shaking his head.
“Ignore Annelie, newbies amuse her.” He holds out a hand for the canister. “What have you got for us, Elena was it?”
“The jig is up,” Celio says, quiet enough that she knows the others can’t hear him. She just sighs and nods. They already know she isn’t a big name, or an expert, but it’s not like they’re looking to make a profit anyway. As long as these two don’t get violent, and get them the meeting they’re looking for? She doesn’t care how bad they fuck them over.
“I don’t know,” she admits, handing over the canister. “It’s alien tech, I know that much. Some people said you knew a guy who’d buy it off me. Short, ratty thing?” Now it’s Kevin’s turn to narrow his eyes, his look dangerous instead of challenging. Annelie watches her and Celio as he turns the canister over in his hand, eying the chips critically.
“Argit’s got pretty high standards,” he says and their stomachs fall.
“You said you don’t know what they are?” Annelie asks them, her tone offhanded and at odds with the intensity with which she’s watching. This time Celio is the one to respond, raising his small voice to be sure he’s heard.
“We were hoping you guys could tell us, as well as set up a deal.” The bird daemon looks them over again before turning her own attention to the chips.
“They don’t look familiar to me, Kev.”
“No,” he shakes his head as he speaks. “Definitely at least level nine or ten tech but…”
“You think Susi and Argit will know?”
“Maybe? They do have more experience.” Celio pitters around Elena’s ear.
“They’re gonna say no,” he whispers to her in his tiny, tinny voice, “they’re gonna say no and we’ll be right back where we started and we’ll never get them back-”
“Hush!” Elena hisses, fists clenching at her sides. “They won’t say no.” They can’t say no. This is the closest they’ve gotten to getting help and just, they can’t say no. She won’t let them.
“What the fuck?!” The words and a clatter bring her attention back to the present. Kevin’s backed up, Annelie fluffed large on his shoulder, and when Elena follows his glare she sees the canister lying on the floor a few feet away. The chips are glowing. Her heart stops. They’ve never
“I haven’t seen them do that before,” she says, just moments before she has to duck to shield herself from an explosion of glass and whirring chips. On instinct she dives for the protection of the car, Celio still clinging to her ear like a lifeline. When she looks back, Kevin is coated in the same green-painted metal as his ride and Annelie
Annelie is tearing through a massive cloud of chips as a tiger. Elena isn’t sure if she’s more concerned about the tiger thing or the fact that there were not that many chips in that canister. Another cloud dives for her out of nowhere, only to be knocked apart by Kevin.
“I repeat, the fuck?!” he says as he and his daemon struggle to keep the chips at bay. It takes Elena a moment to realize he’s addressing them, and by that point Celio is already talking.
“We don’t know, Dad never said-” It’s a dramatic entrance worthy of a movie, Elena and Celio both noticing at once the man standing at the other end of the building, silhouetted by the sunlight streaming in. Celio falls silent. They haven’t seen him in weeks and yet there he is, ordering chips forward, attacking them. No! No, something’s not right, he would never-
Kevin and Annelie notice him a moment later and immediately Annelie surges forward. She has to be straining her bond to get close to him and Elena’s heart clenches as he backs away enough for her to hit the end of it. Whether it’s from concern for him or not, she can’t tell. All she knows is that Annelie is straining to swipe at him while not killing herself and Kevin from distance, that one instant she’s roaring and the next she flying into the car in a cloud of chips. In a heartbeat Elena in on her feet, trying her best to check she’s okay without touching her, murmuring reassurances to both daemons even as the tiger’s eyes crack open.
“Kevin,” she stumbles upright as quickly as she can and Elena and Celio follow her gaze to Kevin. He’s the one pulling at the bond now, his hand against the wall, eyes glowing, electricity arcing over him. His lips are pulled back in a snarl and when the first chip reaches him Elena instinctively shields her eyes.
When the light dies down enough for her to blink the spots from her eyes and look around the chips lay smoking on the concrete, her father is gone, and Annelie has run to Kevin’s side. If Elena is honest with herself, she’s too scared to do the same. He’s still snarling, his fists are clenched, and he just turned the entire building into a light show.
“Kevin…” Annelie’s voice is concerned, and wary, and Kevin breathes deep before he responds.
“I’m fine,” he says with finality, “I’m, I just need a minute…” His daemon licks his hand comfortingly.
Her eyes are steel when she turns to them.
“Talk,” she says, stalking over as if they hadn’t been trying to help her before. Elena feels a familiar fire spark up, she’s not going to be intimidated, not when she has a mission.
“We don’t know-”
“Don’t,” the tiger jumps on the hood of the car- “Watch the paint, Annelie”- all the better to loom, “lie to me.”
“We just want help!”
“Celio!” Elena snarls, but her daemon’s outburst seems to have helped some. At least, now Annelie’s gaze is curious and threatening as opposed to just threatening. She watches as Kevin finally makes his way over, fists still clenched, and jaw too now that she can see better, but no longer snarling.
“What help?” he asks, crossing his arms, and Celio takes that as his cue to open the floodgates.
“Our father was kidnapped,” he said as loud and as fast as he could manage, which was pretty fast but not so loud, “and we were hoping Ben 10 could help us be we don’t know how to get a hold of him! Then we heard about that Argit guy and how he’s close to him but we don’t know how to get in touch with him either! But you do! So we thought you could get us to him and he’d get us to Ben and Ben would help!” Celio’s breathing is loud in her ear and Elena claps a protective hand over him. Her expression is firm, challenging. If they won’t help then she’ll find someone else who will. Ben is their last chance of getting their father back, of figuring out why he’s- They won’t be stopped here.
“Where did you get the chips?” Annelie asks, her tone calmer now, though still wary. This time Elena is the one to answer.
“Dad’s lab. He’s been working with them for years. We think they’re related to his disappearance.”
“Then call the Plumbers,” Kevin says and Elena’s own jaw clenches.
“They won’t help.” Anger builds in her as she says it, as she thinks about the hypocrites and assholes that threw her family aside and- Celio nips soothingly at her ear. “He’s an ex-Plumber, we’ve been blacklisted. They won’t even take messages from me.” Kevin scowls at that, but something tells her it’s not at them.
“It’s why we need to find Ben, he’s our last shot.” Elena pulls her hand away and Kevin and Annelie both stare at Celio. The tense moment that follows rolls into another, and another, before Kevin huffs a sigh.
“Get in the car,” he orders as he circles them to get to the driver’s side. Annelie shifts back into a bird, this one gray and black, to settle back on his shoulder. Elena is cautious as she does what he says.
“This is a Tennyson problem, he’ll find it anyway,” he says as she’s settling in, pulling out his phone. “Might as well drop it off.”
~
“You okay?”
Elena starts when Annelie addresses her, giving her a long look before turning her attention back to the buildings going by. She’s tense. Finding Ben was the goal, finding him and getting his help, but now that they’re on their way she… All she can think about is how easily he dropped her. About her father losing his job and about how she never heard from the boy who had been her best friend afterwards. Her dad was fired and suddenly…
“Our relationship with Ben and Cassie is,” she finally says, “complicated.” Kevin nods.
“Know the feeling.”
~
They expect the surprise on Ben and Cassie’s faces when they see them, but not the grins that come after it.
“Elena?!”
“Celio!!” Ben immediately beelines for her, and before she knows it Cassie is bouncing around her heels and she and Celio have no idea what to do.
“Ben.” Her voice is curt when she speaks, but she doesn’t know if she wants to scream or cry or both and it’s just what manages to come out. Ben at least doesn’t seem put off, but Gwen and Llyr give her a funny look from behind them.
“It’s been a long time,” the swan daemon says. Three years, to be exact. A turning point, when everything got harder.
“We’ve missed you,” Ben continues on, “ever since your dad quit and you guys moved-” and Elena sees red.
“Quit? Is that what they told you?” She doesn’t even bother to hide the snarl, fists clenching at her side. “My dad got fired, Ben. And we didn’t move until we lost the house four months later.” Celio edges forward to run his antennae over the corner of her eye, a vain attempt to calm her down. “Four months during which I somehow didn’t hear a thing from you!” She can see Ben’s face fall, hear Cassie whimper and Annelie sing a vaguely soothing melody, but Gwen is the one whose hand appears on her arm.
“Elena, we didn’t know,” she says and that seems to spur Ben into action. His hand is suddenly on her shoulder and he just looks so hurt and guilty.
“I’m so sorry,” he says, “Grandpa Max said you guys had left. If I’d had any idea… “
“We’re so, so sorry, Celio.” Cassie looks like she’s going to cry, if dogs even can, and Elena stays frozen as her daemon slowly climbs down her jacket to wave his antennae at their old friends.
“I hope so.” He’s blatantly trying to be hard and cold, but it’s also very much not working. It’s, a little much really, and Elena finds herself taking a step backwards. Space is, space is good.
“Um, I’m glad you guys are all friends, but-” for the first time since they got there Elena’s attention is drawn to the non-Tennysons, and boy does it say something about her state of mind that she missed a daemon that big- “there was a reason we got called here, right?”
“Yeah,” Kevin responds for her. He’s clearly uncomfortable when she looks, Annelie nuzzling his jaw. “Elena, that’s Alan and Monarch-” he points to the boy who was speaking and his antelope- “and Argit and Susi.” That one she kind of recognizes from the descriptions she’d managed to scrape together. They just hadn’t realized the daemon beside the waving alien was so large.
“Turns out,” Annelie continues, “the Validuses have gotten themselves into some trouble.” For a moment Elena is going to argue, just because something bad happened to her dad doesn’t mean he got himself into it, but before she can Ben’s hands are on her shoulders again and he’s looking at her with one of the most serious expressions she’s ever seen on him.
“Tell us everything.”
~
“Well, that’s fucked up.” Not quite the response Elena and Celio were hoping for, but not one they could exactly disagree with. After all, Susi is right.
“And you’re sure the chips from the garage are dead?” Gwen looks uncertain, but Kevin nods at her, pulling a handful out of his pocket.
“Okay,” Celio whispers into Elena’s ear, “when did he-?”
“Probably while we were staring down a tiger.” Meanwhile Kevin and Gwen are both staring each other down.
“How do you know though?”
“Generally, when electronics start smoking? They’re dead.” Suddenly, Argit and Susi are eyeing him, and Elena is starting to wonder just how bad an idea what he did was.
“Kevin…”
“I’m fine. Promise.”
“Elena,” Ben pulls the attention of the small crowd to him, “do you know who that man was?” And there goes her stomach again. That man- It couldn’t have been him. The lighting was bad, she was seeing what she wanted to see, it was a shapeshifter, somebody was wearing his skin, it was not-
“No,” Celio says. “We’ve never seen him before.”
~
She isn’t sure how she’d expected Ben to help her, but it certainly hadn’t involved heading into the Plumber base. Getting in hadn’t been a problem, they’d even used the front door, Alan sticking close to her and Ben smoothing their way passed the man running the front, and inside had been…
Just like she remembered.
They’re not all loaded into the main room for five minutes before everyone is at a computer, all running different tests to figure out what these chips are. The only ones not working on their own are Alan and Monarch, who’ve crowded around a screen with Argit and Susi, obviously learning how to run these tests themselves.
“So, they’re techno-organic,” Alan eventually says when they’re pooling their findings. “Like mechamorphs.”
“Not like mechamorphs,” Kevin replies, he and Ben both shaking their heads. “Not quite as advanced.”
“But still, we can work with this, right?”
“Well we can figure out some weaknesses now.”
“Besides electricity.” Elena frowns as they speak, as Kevin blows a raspberry at Ben and Monarch and Llyr sighs.
“But, that doesn’t help us find my dad,” she says, and Celio waves his antennae in agreement.
“No,” Argit responds, “but it does help keep us alive while we do.”
“I can’t get an energy signature to trace,” Gwen says, “so we can’t track anything through them. Thank you, Kevin.”
“You’re welco-”
“What is going on here?”
Max is not supposed to be there. He is supposed to be out, doing whatever it is old people do in their spare time. He is definitely not supposed to be glaring at Elena and Celio. And if he had to be there and glaring, he at least could’ve brought food for everyone.
“What is she doing here?” The Tennysons and Alan all give each other harried looks, but Argit just shoots Max a grin.
“Oh, you know, hanging out.” Kevin immediately follows suit.
“We figured, where better to spend our time? Got a pizza coming in twenty, it’s great.” Max threw a glare between them before turning his gaze to his grandchildren. Meanwhile Alan and Monarch were edging between Deana and Elena, Susi slipping into the space ahead of them.
“Ben.”
“She needs our help, Grandpa.”
“Get her out of here, Ben.” Elena is cheered to see the look on Ben’s face say everything but ‘yes sir’, and even more so to see the other boys and their daemons looking at Max like he’s ripped the world’s worst fart.
“We’re not turning away someone in need,” Cassie says, her wiry fur on end as she stares down Deana.
“She’s a Validus, she’s not to be trusted.” Which is when Gwen finally steps in.
“Just because her dad got fired-”
“For stealing from the vaults!”
“Something you lied about!” Ben surges to his feet, a touch of righteous fury in his eyes. “And it’s not fair to throw her out for things her father-”
“Hush!” Deana’s lips are pulled back from her teeth and her growling speaks of an end to arguing. “The Validus family has been blacklisted, regulations state there is to be no interaction between them and any Plumber agents, now get. Her. Out.”
Elena is tense and ready to fight. Celio’s already used his miniscule weight to shove her sunglasses down over her eyes, perched on the bridge of her nose and ready to spray boiling fluids on anyone who would dare. They have not come this far just to get metaphorically cockblocked by some old man and his dog daemon. If they want them gone, they’ll have to move themselves.
“Make us.” But it doesn’t really look like that’ll be an issue. While Elena’d already jumped to her feet, Gwen’s taken her place and Ben’s sat himself back down purposefully, their daemons both in their laps. In fact, the only people standing are Alan, Argit, and Kevin, along with their daemons. Alan and Monarch look as ready to fight as she feels. It’s, nice. Especially when Llyr pipes up from the back.
“That’s a bullshit rule,” he says, to everyone’s apparent pride, “and we’re not supporting it.”
“Nobody is asking you to help her, old man,” Argit adds, “just telling you that we are. If that’s a problem, well, sucks to be you.”
“I think your crew is mutinying,” Elena finally says, unable to help a smirk. She remembers how torn up her father was that Max Tennyson had thrown him out, called him a liar, blacklisted their family, this serves him right.
When Max turns his glare on her, she glares right back.
~
“So, what way are we headed?”
“South, I’ll tell you when to turn.”
It’s two hours after the confrontation with Max and Elena, Ben, and Kevin have piled into the tech dealer’s Dodge to check out her father’s lab, leaving the others to continue searching for The Man. Normally she would’ve preferred to leave sooner, anything to get things moving, but Argit had insisted they actually get a pizza and hang around a while. Something about making their point clear. For the entire time she and Celio hadn’t been able to go anywhere alone, somebody always following close by to make sure Max and Deana didn’t try to throw them out themselves.
They’d filled the hours with research (and oh how her teeth ground when she watched the video of her father’s interrogation, after Kevin and Argit hacked the system to find it) and banter. Apparently, Alan is a hybrid. Susi touches Kevin as easily as Argit, but Argit, it turns out, is dating Gwen’s brother Ken. Ben and Kevin’s relationship is awkward but improving, Cassie and Annelie are close. Susi and Argit have practically adopted Alan and Monarch as their own and they still aren’t sure how they feel about it.
She and Celio have pretty much walked into a soap opera.
~
There’s a tension in Elena’s shoulders when they finally get to the building.
“Our dad started acting really weird a few months ago,” she says, trying to ignore the knot in her stomach and the memories behind her eyes, focusing instead on footsteps behind her and Celio’s claws at her ear. “We followed him one night to this place.”
“Well, hanging out here certainly qualifies as weird…” Cassie is practically pinned to Ben’s leg, primed and ready to lash out at any threats. Kevin, meanwhile, is looking around the area like he’s sightseeing. Annelie jumps from his shoulder and lands as a large housecat.
“We’ve seen weirder. Should’ve seen our aunt’s house. Always smelled like hay.” The door isn’t locked, which is somehow creepier than anything else. Ben hisses when they crowd inside the tattered, filthy entryway.
“But did it look like a cockroach farm?”
“No, that was just our cousins’ room.” Celio heaves a quiet laugh and Elena wants to join him, she really does, but she can’t bring herself to as she leads the way up the stairs.
“Dad’s been studying the chips for years, but he suddenly didn’t want us to be involved,” she explained as they made their way up. “Eventually, he just stopped coming home.”
At first glance the lab looks just as she left it yesterday, when they came to grab the canister for the meeting. Tables covered with papers, shelves full of boxes, computer, diagrams even she has trouble understanding sometimes. But, it’s not the same.
“Someone’s been here,” she says, as Celio jumps off her head to land on Annelie, using her as a steed to check the room. “Taking things.”
“Or looking for things.” Ben waves a piece of paper in her direction as Kevin scours the rest of the stack like a man in the desert hunting for water. “Check out these notes, Elena. Your dad wasn’t studying the chips, he was upgrading them, developing them.”
“Poorly.”
“Manners, Kevin.”
“Well he was.” Elena’s not sure what’s worse, the insinuation Ben is making that this is all her dad’s fault (that wasn’t him, it wasn’t him, it wasn’t him) or Kevin’s insulting his work.
“My dad is a brilliant scientist,” she says, “who just, got obsessed with his work.”
“Which was?” Cassie has wandered away, but Ben is looking at her expectantly.
“He said the chips were a threat, the Plumbers wouldn’t listen, so he took the chips so he could try to neutralize them on his own.”
“Shame he never tried Frankensteining them.”
“Tell me about it.”
“Elena,” Celio’s voice is just audible over the shuffling of papers and footfalls, “Elena, the containers are gone.” What? No, that can’t be right. But it’s true, when she kneels down to check they simply aren’t there.
“This is where I found the chips,” she says, gesturing to the empty space in front of her, “just yesterday, they were right here.”
“And now they’re in, Berlin? Or headed there.” Cassie’s managed to find herself on the top of the table, pawing through a load of shipping notices. Ben picks one of them up.
“I thought you said your dad disappeared weeks ago, Elena? These were signed today.” No no no no no-
“He did.” Celio crawls onto the floor, then to her hand to be moved back to her ear. “I don’t know what’s going on…” No.
“Um, guys?” Kevin is still where they left him pawing through notes and plans, but now he’s turned to the door. More specifically, to the random group of people standing in the doorway. Annelie jumps up to hiss beside him, her attention on the static, unseeing daemons among them, and his hands are already taking on the metal of the table.
“Who are you?” Ben asks them as they both scoot away from the doorway. “What do you want?”
“We want to help.” The tone is bland and emotionless and sends a shiver up Elena’s spine.
“Yeah, we’re good,” Kevin says, items falling off the table as Annelie becomes a bobcat. “You can all toddle on home now.” A flash of movement catches Elena’s eye just in time for her to see some things skitter beneath a woman’s skin. She wants to throw up, she is this close.
“Guys, I think they’re being controlled.”
“Because the dead eyes and zombie daemons didn’t say that.”
“Quiet, Kev. The chips?” Ben is craning to get the same view as her, Cassie growling and pressing herself against his leg. He’s fiddling with the Omnitrix just out of sight, but Elena can’t see a single clear image.
“We want you to meet the queen.” Kevin snorts, shifting to more central position between the chip-infested people and them.
“No thanks, already got enough of those in my life.”
“What are you waiting for?” Annelie hisses while he talks, clearly directing it at them. “Go, we’ve got your back.”
And it’s a good thing, because the moment they notice Elena, Ben, and Cassie moving towards the fire escape the group lunges. Another of them turns out to be waiting when Elena wrenches the door open- seriously, what is going on?!- only to be met with her fist in his face and a quick flip over the railing to the ground below. She ignores the way Ben’s eyes go wide at the sight, but smiles at Cassie’s whoop. Kevin and Annelie aren’t far behind, diving off the fire escape at about the same time they reach the bottom of it and shoving them ahead of themselves towards the car.
“I will leave your deadweight behind, move!”
“Kevin,” Ben says when he piles in and realizes that there’s a nasty fire in Kevin’s eyes as he backs out, not giving anyone the chance to do more than shut doors behind them, “Kevin tell me you aren’t-”
“I am.”
“We do not run people over!”
“Will one of you get us out of here?!”
Kevin guns it and only hits two. Elena’s not about to give him trouble about it.
~
“What was up with the Omnitrix back there?”
“I think it has something to do with the chips? It gets weird sometimes when it’s wants to scan something, maybe it’s having trouble with them.”
“Because that’s just what we need, your watch out of commission with mind control chips attacking people in swarms.”
“If I could get a single living sample, that might help?” The car jolts to a stop and Kevin turns in his seat to glare at Ben.
“I am not getting you a goddamn doom chip!” And Elena just can’t help it-
“But Kevin-”
~
The plan is to go to the local Ship-It hub, that being where the chips are presumed to have been sent, but they don’t even need to say anything when an SUV screams down the road from that direction, fire occasionally erupting from the open trunk and two spiked metal balls coming up behind. In fact the only sound as Kevin turns is him sighing. Ben is careful to change into a blue mothperson- Big Chill, they are informed- before they get close to the chips. The fight’s actually easy, almost too easy. Big Chill freezes them with icy breath and the temperature difference between that and the fireballs Alan’d been lobbing causes most of them to just shatter. The rest simply collapse to the ground, apparently too few to function as a threat.
They still let Kevin handle gathering them up.
“What was that about,” Elena asks, hovering to the side with Alan and the Tennysons. Monarch sighs as she answers.
“We managed to get an energy signature off those dead ones we had,” she says, “and found out there were a load at the local Ship-It office. Except they were gone when we got there.”
“All there was was a possessed clerk,” Alan continues for her, and Llyr brings up the rear.
“Right up until we left, then those ones came out of nowhere and started chasing us.”
“Same here,” Cassie says. “A bunch of those possessed people ambushed us at the lab.”
“So, we have an ongoing possession problem then.” Gwen sighs as she speaks. “This just keeps getting better and better…”
“Well the good news is, we still have the energy signature-” Ben smiles as he speaks and it’s heartening “-and now that we have some live ones we can hopefully get the Omnitrix back into commission around them.”
“I sure hope so.”
~
When they get back to the base Max and Deana are stood at the same computers they were before, watching as message after message pops up on the main screen and looking distinctly overwhelmed.
“Where were you?” the dog daemon growls as the lot of the group come into view. “We’ve got Plumbers from all over the world calling in about attacks by strange alien tech-”
“The chips.” She stops and gives Cassie a firm look.
“Did they tell you that?” Deana’s eyes dart to Elena and Celio as she says it and Elena feels her jaw clench.
“We saw it.” Alan’s right there again, a hand on her arm as Monarch glares the boxer down as a large goat.
“They’re alive,” Gwen adds as she, Kevin, and Argit slip passed everyone else to settle in at various monitors, “very much alive.”
“And have a nasty habit of burrowing into people and taking over their minds,” Ben adds. Max shakes his head.
“No, those chips were nothing more than extraterrestrial hardware, it’s not possible.” Elena scoffs.
“Yeah,” she says, gesturing to the screen that’s still putting though messages automatically, “clearly.” Fuck it, what’s he going to do besides glare at her?
Nothing.
“Got a few locks on the energy signature,” Kevin says, voice a little breathy, lilting too much for Elena’s stomach. The image that comes up on the screen is not pretty, with markers showing concentrations of chips in way too many places across the globe.
“I think,” Argit says quietly to Gwen and their daemons, “they’ve gotten past our initial hundred-mile radius.”
“Yeah, and spreading further every minute…” A bit of pride swells in Elena, despite everything.
“So they are a threat,” she says, smirking at Max and Deana, “just like my father said.”
“Those things were inert three years ago,” Max growls back. “Your father’s tinkering woke them up somehow, now they’re a threat to the entire world!” Elena’s nostrils flare and her fists clench.
“They were dormant, not inert, ask anyone here!”
“Girls, girls,” Susi cuts in, “you’re both pretty, now can we please work on saving the planet?!”
“We know where they are,” Kevin says, “I say we start shooting.” Ben glares at him as Annelie drops her head in her now-ferrety paws.
“We are not shooting innocent victims, Kevin.”
“Besides,” Gwen adds, “we don’t know that shooting the victims will do anything but deprive the chips of hosts, and if we’re doing that we may as well just destroy the planet ourselves.” Kevin huffs and Argit shakes his head, patting his knee.
“Don’t mess with electricity kids,” Annelie says from his shoulder, “it fucks with your head and even with a healing factor the damage takes a while to really fix.”
“That explains so much.” Elena doesn’t even have words, but she does have an idea.
“Can we find the queen?” That gets everyone’s attention.
“Queen?” Max asks, but nobody is paying him and Deana any mind anymore. Gwen’s grinning.
“Yeah, the Ship-It clerk was talking about a queen-”
“So were the people at the lab! Like she was in charge!” Cassie grins at Ben’s enthusiasm and Elena.
“If she’s running the show, then if we take her down then maybe we can stop all this!” Shaking his head, Max at least seems to get with the program, slamming his hand on the desk nearby where Gwen has set the chips.
“Okay then,” he says, “let’s find this queen. We’re gonna see about dissecting some of these chips, find out what makes them tick. Gwen, Llyr, see if you can figure out how to separate those chips from their hosts. Alan, help Argit and Susi figure out a way to stop those drones without setting everybody on fire. Ben, Kevin, you guys are on queen search, find her. And Elena,” he glares at her again before turning on his heel and heading for his office, “don’t get in the way.” Even Celio is growling at that.
“Fucking piece of-”
“Come on, Elena,” when she turns back to the group Gwen is gesturing her forward while Llyr pulls out a seat, “we could use some help.” Who is she to say no?
“I’d be glad to.”
~
“I think I’ve found her!” Everyone turns at once to stare at Alan, who’s beaming at the group and at the screen. He and Argit had already figured out an electro-magnetic pulse would do the trick, and while Argit and Kevin set to work putting together some appropriate tech he’d gone to help Ben with the search. Apparently to their boon.
“Are you sure?” Kevin asks from the other side of the room, leaning over Susi to see.
“Yeah! See?” Alan points at the main screen while Monarch practically preens. “London, Paris, Munich, all big cities right? But then there’s Bumfuck, Missouri-”
“Language, Kitten.”
“-in the middle of nowhere. Except,” Alan beams even wider, focusing the map in on that location, “Ship-It World Distribution Center.” Laughing, Gwen pulls Alan into a quick hug.
“You are awesome.”
“We try.”
“I’m gonna go grab Grandpa Max,” Ben says with a grin, “you guys get ready for a roadtrip!”
He’s not gone three minutes before there’s a crash and everyone is charging deeper into the base. Elena doesn’t lag behind so much as her legs are shorter than Kevin, Gwen, and Susi’s and by the time she gets to the ‘office’ Kevin is propping a half-conscious Max up in a desk chair.
“Grandpa? Are you okay?” Ben and Gwen are clustered around him, watching him anxiously. The smile that comes to his face as he wakes up just, isn’t right.
“We’re fine,” he says, and that’s when Celio brings her attention to Deana, laying under the desk, eyes blank, “never better. Why are you all looking at us like that?” ‘Like that’ is like something is seriously wrong with them, which it clearly is. Elena and Kevin are both already dragging Ben and Gwen back from their grandfather, Annelie setting herself between their daemons and the old man, again a bobcat. Argit and Susi are in the back, keeping Alan and Monarch safely furthest away.
“We’re great,” Max continues, “we’re happy. We’re going to colonize Earth.”
“Under any other circumstances I wouldn’t be surprised-”
“Shush Argit!” Gwen flashes him a quick glare before turning back to Max. “Grandpa please.” Ben looks just as desperate.
“You have to fight it Grandpa!” Max laughs and the laugh just isn’t natural.
“There is no fighting,” he says. “You can’t stop what’s coming. The Plumbers are finished.” A strange smoke starts pouring out of a nearby vent, quickly covering the small area. “Mankind is finished.”
“Grandpa!”
By the time the smoke clears enough to see, he’s gone. Deana as well, both disappeared deep into the empty tunnels that make up what was once a thriving base, back when they all were still small. Llyr’s beak is buried into Cassie’s fur, Gwen’s arm is looped with Ben’s. Kevin and Elena finally let go.
“We have to stop the queen.”
~
There’s a lot of people at the distribution center. Like, an asston of people, and they’re pretty sure most, if not all, are inhabited by chips. The very same chips they’re transporting by the caseload onto masses of trucks. There’s a brief instance where Argit and Ben have to hold Gwen down before she can rush to her grandfather (Llyr explains how they nearly lost Ken and Ríonach to a similar situation months before and Elena’s chest clenches in sympathy), but they get to the inside of the building without any real trouble. It’s just that-
“It’s like a human assembly line,” Gwen says with frightened awe, looking out over the center of the building.
“…stay in school, Red.” There’s loads of people scooping chips out of boxes, putting them in canisters, and packing the canisters in crates to be shipped.
“Hush Argit.” And at the center of it all, hooked up to masses of thick tubes spilling out endless supplies of chips, is
“The dude from the garage!” Kevin’s already absorbing some of the catwalk as Celio clings closer to Elena’s ear. No. No no no no no
“That’s Victor Validus!” No no no
“I thought you said you didn’t know that guy?!” It’s not, it can’t, no
“That’s not my father,” she says. There’s no conviction behind it but, no, no
“Elena-”
“It’s not my father.” There’s a bony hand on her arm, pulling her from the banister. She can make out Argit’s voice but Celio’s is louder for her. No no no, they’re fine, they’re safe, they aren’t-
“Elena.” Her jaw hurts she’s clenching her teeth so hard, and she can feel her nails digging into her palms. They’re all downstairs now, when did they get downstairs? Argit is talking, toying with her hair, carefully on the opposite side from Celio. Susi is between them and the rest of the group. “He’s gonna be fine, I promise.”
“I don’t know, Hedgehog,” Kevin says and Argit and Susi both glare at him. He’s standing by lockers they’re all behind, he and Annelie, keeping watch. “He’s the one making chips.”
“We think he’s possessed by the queen,” Annelie continues for him and Elena wants to scream. They still don’t know how to separate chips from hosts.
“Kevin,” Ben turns to him, his expression trying to be hopeful, “could you-?” Kevin is shaking his head before he can finish.
“I’m built for that much electricity, Ben. Best case scenario he gets badly hurt, worst case he fries or comes out a different person.”
“But-”
“Other people can’t heal like me.” There’s a pricking behind Elena’s eyes that she can’t stop.
“We have to save him,” she says forcing her voice to stay even through sheer will. Then Gwen’s there, her hand on her arm.
“We’re gonna try, Elena, but…”
“But there may not be an option.” If nothing else, Alan looks as sick as she feels as he says the words. The group falls silent, daemons pressed to their people, eyes downcast.
“Argit,” it’s a shock to everyone when Ben suddenly speaks, “would your quills work on these guys?” Ears pressing back against his mane, Argit slowly nods.
“Theoretically, why?” Ben chews his lip and squares his shoulders, Cassie clenches her jaw.
“If we go rogue, and you quill us, Kev and Annelie can take us out easy.”
“Ben!” Gwen and Elena surge to their feet as one unit, eyes wide. Alan’s choking on the message off to the side, Monarch just barely holding them both steady. The others look, way too calm no matter how unhappy their expressions.
“What are you talking about?” Gwen demands, and Ben gives her a sad smile.
“Well, the Omnitrix scanned the chips on our way back to the base, so I can turn into one now and go fight the queen one on one-” Elena doesn’t like where this is going “-but we can’t be sure the queen won’t control me.”
“Ben…”
“But we’ve got Argit and Kev and between the two of them they could take me out. So if my plan doesn’t work, they take me out and…”
“And I destroy everything.” Ben turns his smile to Kevin and nods and Elena wants to scream.
“No,” she steps forward, grabbing Ben’s arm in one hand with a grip that won’t break, “Ben, don’t, I can’t risk-”
“We can’t lose you too, Ben,” Gwen’s come up behind her and take his other arm, “there has to be another way.”
“Can you think of one?” They can’t, it’s the worst part. Their plan right now consists of ‘hope Ben doesn’t get mindcontrolled and if he does Kevin kills everyone’ and that’s just- “Create a distraction, and trust me.”
~
She does trust him, really and truly. It’s why she looked to him for help in the first place. Why they were friends. Are friends. And it’s why when Kevin makes her a few lengths of metal she accepts them with a nod and dives into the fray right with everybody else.
It’s not an easy fight. She’s been in a few before, actual fights that she participated in rather than ran from or was on the sidelines of, even been outnumbered, but they were nothing like this. Not even anything more intense than three-on-one. It’s rough, and tiring, and even in the short time they’re fighting she gets knocked around some. If she lives to see morning she’s going to have a mass of bruises to deal with.
She cracks a woman upside the head and hears somebody scream directly behind her as Celio lets loose on them. He’s no rhino like Monarch’s become, but there’s nobody she trusts more with her back. Especially with the others also keeping an eye on it. There’s been more than one person dragged away by their daemons by Annelie, or driven off by Gwen and Llyr.
Still, there’s only so many of them, and so much range on their few EMP grenades, and so many more of the drones, and they find themselves huddling together for safety, driven back towards the center of the room. The chips are starting to glow, starting to wake up at the behest of their queen. Elena’s sick and worried about Ben, about her father, her friends, the world, and looking around shows the other’s feeling the same way.
Then the world is light. Caramelly light pouring out from her father, from the drones, rising towards the ceiling in a seething storm of, whatever it is. Gwen’s hand is wrapped up in her sleeve, Argit and Alan hovering at her other side, Kevin stationed protectively at their backs, and all they can do is stare. Stare as the light grows brighter, as it flashes inside the canisters and crates of chips, as it violently explodes out.
When the light fades, when the spots fade, her breath stops in her throat.
“Dad!” He’s collapsed on the platform he’d been standing on, but he looks up at the sound of her voice, and the surprised smile on his face outshines everything else, from the flash of green she runs passed to the sunshine outside. Climbing up the platform hurt her bruises, and she needs a moment to figure out how not to jostle the tubes coming out of him, but it’s worth it to wrap her arms around him, bury her face into his shoulder for the first time in years.
“Miela...” Celio’s voice is strained, and Elena shifts her face enough to watch him fall to the ground. Miela is there, limping her way closer, in all her bejeweled blue and orange beauty. The tarantula hawk is quickly overtaken by Celio, and after a brief moment of waving their antennae at each other he immediately falls into grooming her.
They’re back together, all of them, safe and sound. They’re- She buries her face in her father’s shoulder again, ignoring how his jacket is getting wetter, and Argit climbing up to try to get her dad free. Just, telling him everything, in a stream of breathless Spanish. How worried they were, how they missed them, how they love them, how if they ever scare them like this again she will kill them and serve them to the police.
Maybe a little extreme, but he’s laughing so she won’t complain.
~
It takes nearly forty minutes to get her father unhooked from everything, all of which she spends in contact with him. It’s been weeks, after all, and there’s no way in hell she’s going to let him out of her sight. Until, that is, the medical professionals take over. Oh, he’s still in sight, make no mistake, but she can’t hover over him quite the same. But there’s other things going on, like the others hovering not far from where she’s hovering, watching like hawks.
“So?” Kevin asks when they all meet in the middle, and Elena notices that out of them he’s the one that looks most worried, watching her father over her head.
“They’ll be fine.” Everything’s okay now. Everyone’s safe. The Tennysons and Alan are grinning.
“That’s great, Elena,” Ben says, and reaches out to put a hand her shoulder.
Within thirty seconds she is dragging everyone who isn’t a daemon into a group hug. They get to cuddle up as much as possible with Celio, who is singing so many praises. Three years since they’d seen the Tennysons and they dropped everything to help. Alan, Argit, Kevin, they and theirs didn’t even know them a day ago and they dropped everything to help. Less than twenty-four hours ago they’d been alone and on their last option and now, now their family was back together and-
“Thank you,” so maybe her voice was a little watery, and getting more so as people hugged her back, she deserved it. “Thank you so, so much.”
“Hey, what are friends for?”

For the "Give me a character" ask meme: Our wonderful, wonderful ocs, Hestia and Jubilee!! (or you can just do Hestia if you only want to do one character)
MADAM YOU THINK I WOULD PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT WHY I LOVE JUBILEE?? YOU THINK WRONG
Jubilee
Why I like them: She’s wonderful, perfect, literally the most amazing OC, I’d do anything for her and for you, I love her with all my heart, she’s incredible. She’s so strong, and
Why I don’t: I quite honestly cannot think of a single reason as to why I would not absolutely love Jubilee. I would die for her.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): If I have to choose a moment from one of our RPs, I’d probably have to say when she took down Macavity in our Alice in Wonderland RP. In a story, probably when she tricked the animal catcher into thinking Mungojerrie was her boyfriend during their first meeting! Mungojerrie truly met his match that day!
Favorite season/movie: I’m using this for RPs/Stories, and I’d probably have to say that my favorite RP/Story version of Jojo would probably have to be when we did the Gothenburg/Circus RP. That was one of my favorite RPs we did!!
Favorite line: “Don’t call me cupcake!” We love fierce fighting Jojo!! (though I do have a few favorite lines of hers that are coming up in the Human AU!!)
Favorite outfit: Pirate!Jojo, obviously!! I love our pirate girls with all my heart! Though Steampunk!Jubilee is a very close second, of course! (speaking of... I am starting on the Siren AU this weekend!!!)
OTP: Jubilee/Mungojerrie, who else! Curls and Cheshire forever!
Brotp: Jubilee and Hestia, Jubilee, Dorsey, and Trave, Jubilee and Rumpleteazer, Jubilee, Sekhmet, and Ares
Head Canon: Jubilee doesn’t think she’s the greatest dancer, but she’s actually really graceful. If there’s a prank that goes awry in the Junkyard, or perhaps something goes flying towards her (like a snail Ares is chucking at Hestia), Jubilee can duck out of the way as if she’s dancing. Even if she thinks she can’t dance, she can move normally like she’s one of the best dancers in the tribe, and it quite honestly baffles Munkustrap to no end.
Unpopular opinion: Jubilee deserves so much love oh my GOD SHE’S AMAZING!!! She’s an OC that I can absolutely see being part of an official production of Cats (👀)
A wish: For Jubilee to confront her mother and find closure! I know that’s something that may not ever happen, and her mother’s most likely passed away, but that’s an image I’ve always had in my mind, like Tugger confronting Grizabella, of Jubilee finally being able to confront her mother on why she was abandoned. Jubilee, happy, with a mate and a family who loves her, confronting the mother who left her for dead.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: For Jubilee’s mother to return and try to take her away from the Jellicles. If that ever happened I quite honestly think I would cry.
5 words to best describe them: Guarded, affectionate, strong, outgoing, fun-loving
My nickname for them: Jojo! I can’t think of any other nickname that could be more perfect other than Curls, but that’s just for Mungojerrie to use!
Hestia
Why I like them: She was my first Cats OC and I love her with all my heart!!!
Why I don’t: BRAIN EMPTY ONLY HESTIA NO QUASI JITTERBUG OR MIELA
Favorite episode (scene if movie): My favorite RP moment would definitely have to be during our Pirate RP when Hestia’s magic takes over! That was one of my favorite RPs, and that moment was really fun to write as development for a different AU version of Hestia’s character! Storywise, I’d have to say when our girls meet, because they just click instantly, and it makes me really happy whenever I go back and read that story.
Favorite season/movie: RP/Story version of Hestia has to be Steampunk!Hestia, just because of the angst I got to work into the RP. But, of course, I loved writing Pirate!Hestia also, because Pirate!Hestia and Pirate!Jubilee are amazing and I love them.
Favorite line: “You’re proposing?  Now?” from the Pirate AU!
Favorite outfit: Pirate!Hestia!!
OTP: Hestia and Tumblebrutus!! My loves 😌
Brotp: Hestia and Jubilee, Hestia, Sekhmet, Ares, Calliope, Fabre, and Ziggy, Hestia, Mungojerrie, Rumpleteazer, and Pouncival, Hestia and Jemima,
Head Canon: I consider our RPs to now be pretty much part of Hestia’s canon. Obviously, this includes Hestia’s scar that she received from Gothenburg Macavity. There are nights that she’ll wake up with nightmares of not being fast enough, and it’s Jubilee being hurt instead of her, or Quaxo, and while Tumblebrutus doesn’t exactly know what’s going on, he still hugs her close every time she wakes up crying.
Unpopular opinion: I love Hestia, but I need to work on my other OCs! I know I always say this, but I’m really hoping to get some shorts done for Quasi and Jitterbug, particularly where they (finally) meet the Jelliclles, and a few shorts for Miela, since I haven’t written any for her! At least Quasi and Jitterbug have gotten some RPs to help their characters out...
A wish: For Hestia to give my brain a rest
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: For Hestia’s magic to corrupt her. I don’t think it’lll happen, but there’s always that possibility... and the angst would be WONDERFUL.
5 words to best describe them: Shy, cautious, defensive, kindhearted, magical
My nickname for them: “Hettie” is the main one I use whenever friends are addressing her in stories. “Etta” is the nickname that family uses when addressing Hestia (her dads and siblings), and “Essie” is Tumblebrutus’ nickname for her!
