MIDWAY, a Message from the Gyre is a short film. It is a powerful visual journey into the heart of an astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy. On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times. With photographer Chris Jordan as our guide, we walk through the fire of horror and grief, facing the immensity of this tragedy—and our own complicity—head on. And in this process, we find an unexpected route to a transformational experience of beauty, acceptance, and understanding. Our feature film MIDWAY is currently in post-production and expected to premiere in early 2014.

The island suffers from a lot of deaths of birds that feed on dead fish. These birds get confused materials plastics (garbage) with food and end up dying, harming their young in the same away.

One Week at Midway Atoll

Holy hell is the internet in the middle of the Pacific slow! You would think with so many advances in technology that satellite internet would be all the rage, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It literally takes about two days for a Snapchat to load ... unacceptable! With that said, blog posts will only be completed when the internet cooperates ever so slightly (3 am).

So here is a quick overview of my first impressions of the tiny atoll known as Midway. More information regarding each subject and recounts of my experience with each will definitely follow!

My very first impression ... “damn that’s a lot of birds”. 

The Albatross and several other species of bird are absolutely everywhere. They cover the fields, swim in the oceans, gather by the ponds, and walk idly across all streets and paths. You have to watch where you walk for not only the obvious (and adorable) albatross chicks that nest everywhere, but to avoid falling into a Bonin Petrel hole. These little shorebirds dig tunnels underground to lay their eggs and raise their super fluffy chicks. If you collapse a burrow, though, you run the risk of either crushing or suffocating both parent and baby. Talk about extreme guilt.

Our housing, however, is incredible. Typical field work requires unfortunate housing with minimal amenities (forget hot showers and real food). Midway, as a formal Navy station, has the best of the best as far as “field housing”. I am staying in a huge house that used to be the officer’s quarters back when Midway was an active military installation. 

And the food!

The food is ridiculous. Thai contractors make up about half of the population (so around 20/40 people on Midway). The chefs are amazing. They cook great Thai food, obviously, and go out of they way to make everyone on the island fat and happy. I think I have actually gained weight in this past week. Gotta cut back on all the stir fry!

The beaches are incredible, the reefs are pristine, and the people on this island are the strangest combination of wonderful personalities from across the globe. It has been a great first week and I am definitely looking forward to learning more and helping out this amazing Atoll in the coming months. And if the next few weeks are anything like this one has been, stay tuned for some ridiculous stories!
