Midori MD Diary A5 - Removing Cover

I've been enjoying the Midori MD Diary A5 I picked up for 2024. Since the monthly calendar begins in Dec 2023, I decided to start using it.
What I noticed after a few days was how much I disliked the actual flexible cover that wrapped the front and back. The edge warped under the slightest pressure and it didn't fit into any of my current A5 covers. I have a lot of covers already and was not looking to spend more money.
So I made the choice to remove the cover and so glad I did. I can now slide it into my any of my Hobonichi A5 covers with no problem.
It stay tucked into it and doesn't have any hangover.
The stich binding is still holding the diary itself together with how it is layered. So I'm not worried about it coming apart. The top page is the only one that is semi lose and is my own fault when I was using craft blade.
I did apply some binding glue plus wide washi-tape to cover up the spine. It lays flat now and so much more enjoyable to use with being tucked into the cover. I know it may not be pretty or prefect but for me it works and now I really love using it.
I hope you find this encouraging to do whatever you want with your own journals, planners, and diaries. I know it can be scary! but it needs to fit you and how you want to use it.

Techo Kaigi 2023
2023 is drawing to a close and the new planners are sitting in my drawer, calling to me in all their pristine loveliness. But before I talk about 2024, how did 2023 go?
Pretty well, actually.
I started 2023 with the following planners:
Daily personal journal: Hobonichi Cousin
Daily carry: Hobonichi Weeks Mega
Commonplace book: Hobonichi A5 notebook
Writing journal: Hobonichi A5 notebook
Health journal: Hobonichi Weeks
Work journal: Hobonichi A6 Techo
Overflow/bullet journal: Midori Codex A5
By the end of 2023 (actually, by about mid-2023) only two of those got switched out for something else and one got added. Which is pretty good. There are, however, a few other changes I am making next year. I’m going to go through each in detail.
Were these the right journals for me?
Actually, yes. Although there is some reconfiguring, the basic principles of the journals above is going to remain consistent. I need a place to write personal journal entries that stays at home and a place to track things and make notes on the go. I enjoy both writing and commonplacing. If I want to focus on my health, having a dedicated journal helps. And I keep a separate journal for work because it may contain information that shouldn’t really go outside of work. And then sometimes I overflow into another space because I want to deep dive on something that doesn’t really fit in the others. None of this is changing.
Daily Personal Journal
The 2023 Hobonichi Cousin is going to move into … the 2024 Hobonichi Cousin. This book works really well for me. The finder details of how I use it did evolve a bit over the year, but I think I’m happy with where I ended up. I did consider moving into the Avec as my Cousin is fairly chonky at this point, but I prefer to have the book in English. I will use this in mostly the same way as last year as well:
3 months to a page view: I have no idea what I will do with this next year, but I had no idea last year either.
Monthly pages: I write a daily highlight on each day.
Weekly pages: I currently use these for planning, but this will move to the daily carry. So I am expecting this to become a space for gratitude/manifestation.
Daily pages: personal daily journal entries.
Daily Carry + Bullet Journal
Although the Weeks was nice, I found I ended up feeling things got a bit lost in the weekly view. I pretty much only used it for key dates. I had a Midori Codex as a bullet journal (briefly) but it never worked well for me as I really don’t like Midori paper (a discovery from this year) and it wasn’t something I could carry around. So I tried a Traveller’s Notebook, and again, the paper (which is the same, so I should have realised this would happen) was not to my taste. I solved both by getting a 240 page Sterling Ink TN notebook. This has worked well.
For next year, I wanted to consolidate these into one book. Although the weeks and the TN are smaller dimensionally, carrying both is quite bulky! I decided to get a Sterling Ink Common Planner (2 part book) in A5. I expect it to be used as follows:
3 months to a page view: seriously, I never know what to do with these pages.
Monthly pages: key dates and events
Weekly pages: time based daily planning - what do I do when. This will double as time tracking.
Blank pages: bullet journal which for me acts as a place to work when I’m out and about, as well as an overflow journal. I expect to also use it to write consolidated to do lists.
Creativity + Commonplace Journal
Last year was the first time I kept a commonplace book and this really suits my way of working. I have just about filled it. I did add a separate journal for writing learning, a Weeks Sterling Ink, but this is too small really.
I need somewhere to plan my creative activities, and also to plan this website! Especially as I have a lot of pre-planned content for next year that will need some serious planning to fully prep. So this will be moving into a Sterling Ink Common Planner (2 part book) along with my commonplace book. I originally brought this journal for work, but that ended up being the wrong choice. However, it ends up working out just fine as a combined creativity planner and commonplace book.
3 months to a page view: index.
Monthly pages: website and social media posting schedule. I want to be able to look back and see what got planned and what got posted.
Weekly pages: day to day creative planning - writing, the website, reading, etc.
Blank pages: commonplace book and creative ideas.
Bonus journal: A5 Sterling Ink 520 page learning journal
I will keep the learning separate. It makes it easier for me to re-read it and finding all my notes is going to be increasingly important next year for the content I have planned here.
Writing Journal
The Hobonichi notebook worked well last year as the smoothness of the tomoe river paper makes it a joy to write in. I really need the low feedback paper to write without my hands hurting. But, this year I want to focus on a daily writing habit, so I wanted a daily journal. And I wanted to use the new A5 Hobonichi Hon, but was a bit worried about how it would bulk up as my daily journal. So my new writing journal is the Hobonichi Hon A5.
3 months to a page view: actual daily ‘wordcount’. I want to be able to see the patterns of writing I manage to complete.
Monthly pages: I wanted a place to do mini doodle/zentangle art every day. As I don’t really need the monthlies for anything writing wise, I am going to use this space for that.
Weekly pages: responses to prompts, ideas - anything I feel the need to capture. This won’t really be ‘weekly’.
Daily pages: writing
Bonus journal: A5 Sterling Ink 520 page worldbuilding project journal
As my days vary quite a lot, I know I might not actually write every day. But I can write the equivalent of every day. The idea is to try and keep up with the days and that is why I am also recording the actual daily pages written. I also have a worldbuilding project planned and this will be kept in its own journal. Its an alternative history world so I will need to do a lot of research and then ‘adjust’ reality.
Health Journal
The Hobonichi Weeks was perfect for this. I recorded calories and activity against each day and then used the back pages for planning food shops. I am going to switch to the Sterling Ink Common Planner Weeks Compact for 2024 only because I think the vertical weeklies will be better than the horizontal ones (if I’m wrong, I can always get a Hobonichi Weeks).
Work Journal
It turns out I hate A6. I also think having a weekly overview is better. As is being able to keep my notes in the same book. I changed to a an Undated Sterling Ink Common Planner and I plan to stick with that. I got the ‘half year’ size so I can carry it around more easily.
Is everything Sterling Ink or Hobonichi?
Pretty much. There are two reasons for this that I can now articulate pretty clearly:
Tomoe River paper. I love this paper. Fountain pen inks never feather, even the wetter ones. Its incredibly smooth, and reduces feedback, which in turn reduces pain in my hands.
The grid size. This is perfect for me.
There are other companies out there who can meet this need. I did consider the Wonderland planner for a work planner. I also looked at Aura Estelle and I may get an Undated from here when my current work journal runs out (it depends how many of the note pages I end up using).
That is a lot of journals!
Its only 8. Well, 9 because I expect to use another journal as a record of a big trip I am taking next year. I know it seems a lot, but with the exception of the Worldbuilding Project journal, all of these were things I used last year. And most were filled (or will be full either by the end of the month, or when they come to their natural end). That being said, no one should feel like they have to have this many journals. I started with one - a single bullet journal. I ended up filling it very quickly, which is when I started to have more than one. You have too many journals if:
They are the ‘right’ journal, but you can’t fill them/keep up with them.
Keeping up with them is causing you stress.
Other than this, the correct number of journals is the number that help you function day to day, in all areas of your life. That bring you joy when you use them. I would find trying to cram everything into one book and running out of space stressful. This is what works for me, and in 2024, I will be sticking with it.

Men's Lifestyle Men's Street Style We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. if you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Let Me Tell You About This Legendary Knife Real Quick I own the only knife to have an entire museum dedicated to it, invented in 1890 and now selling over 15 million pieces annually. Pablo Picasso is said to have used an Opinel knife as a sculpting tool, and this knife was recognized by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1985 as one of the best-designed items in history, alongside the Porsche 911 and the Rolex watch. More on my Rolex later. This world-famous icon comes in at a whopping $19 in the US. The Iron Snail It’s also remained largely unchanged for over a century, but that doesn’t mean the modern-day designers at Opinel haven’t been putting their little fingies in the knife and innovating it, and they have some very cool ideas. So today, we’re looking at ten ish of my favorite toys, things I can’t live without, and what have you. Hey, everyone! It’s Michael. I think it’s going to be a good article because let me tell you something – I got a lot of cool toys. The Iron Snail The Iron Snail The first favorite thing in this article is a knife. It’s called The Carter; it’s from the James brand. To be honest, I don’t really know that much about knives yet. I’m starting to get into them now, so I don’t know a lot about steel yet. I don’t know a lot about handles and locks and all that, but I do like this knife. It gets the job done, and it’s aging very cool – some of the black is coming off of the steel, which I really like. I got this for free from Huckberry. Most of the things on the list today aren’t free, and they’re not affiliate links or anything – they’re just things that I like. I keep it with me every day, and a lot of knives I have don’t have a pocket clip, which makes it way more convenient. Also, I really want the Hell Gap from the James Brand. I think that knife looks so sick. I have no need for a giant knife to put on my belt like that, but man, oh man, I’d love to cut apples or something with it, you know? The Iron Snail I tried to journal and write things down every day, and I never kept up with it, but three years ago, I got the Midori Five Year Journal for my girlfriend, Taylor, for her birthday, and it’s amazing. And I got it for Taylor because Taylor was the only person I knew would do it every day no matter what, and she did. What’s amazing is that when you look at this book, one page represents five years, so the page is broken up into five different sections; for example, one page is January 1st, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027. You go through the book five times, and now Taylor’s on the third year, and what’s happening is she’s like, “Oh, this year on January 1st, we were getting ice cream in Concord, Massachusetts, then the next year you were helping me move into New York, then the next year we were both crying outside of my apartment because I was moving to Denmark.” It’s amazing – you definitely have huge things happening in five years. The Iron Snail So my old wallet, or the wallet that I was using as of like three weeks ago, was from a brand called Simply Carbon Fiber, and I like that wallet. I switched to that wallet because my credit cards would never fall out, but the downside was my credit cards got destroyed with that wallet. The Iron Snail So anyways, Bronson of Bronson Leatherworks watches the Iron Snail, and he sent me a handmade wallet that he makes, so I switched over to that, and it’s been great. I’m also looking at the Ship John Foley wallet – I really like that one because it has a closure so I can hide my cards, and then it has a quick, fast-access section in case I have to put cash in there on a getaway or something like that. And having multiple wallets and rotating through them is not a problem for me – I have plenty of Pokemon cards that I could just fill hundreds of wallets in! I have a ton of Pokemon cards from when I was a kid. I really like small square things you could fit in your hand – I don’t know why. The Iron Snail I’m really not kidding when I say I like little, small rectangular things that fit in my hands. So I really like soap, and the soap that I’ve been on lately is Sterling Soap, made in Arkansas. It is all-natural and comes in like 50,000 different smells, so I always get a different smell. It comes in seasonal collections, which is very cool. Don’t worry; it’s a very masculine soap. There is no messing around with soap here! So, I definitely recommend you check them out. Very cool stuff. The Iron Snail Okay, so I can’t really talk about this next subject too much because I work for a watch YouTube channel, but the subject is watches. I wear my Rolex Explorer a bunch – I got it the day before I drove to Canada to get the Iron Snail (my brand, toot toot) Prologue jacket, and that was awesome, and then I jumped in the water with Brandon of Naked and Famous and broke it and then got it fixed. I do have a watch collection, but I don’t know when I’ll talk about it. If I do, it’ll probably be on Theo and Harris’s YouTube channel. So tune in there, but again, I have no idea when that’ll happen. The Iron Snail Also, you probably know this already, but since I work in the world of watches, I have a lot of access to watches, so I have different watches on all the time. I really like digital watches, too, for some reason. I always find it really hard to buy one versus other fancier watches – like my G-Shock DW 5600s. I love it. I got it my sophomore year in college, so I’ve had it for seven years, and I said in college, when the battery dies, I’m gonna get a solar Atomic DW 5600, but it hasn’t died yet, and I don’t know if it ever will. I’m going on seven years, but Huckberry also just sent me the Iron Man Flix, which is a collaboration between Huckberry and Timex where Huckberry really reintroduced kind of an iconic watch from the 90s. It wasn’t in the ’90s, but when I worked at the YMCA, there was this old man who swam laps every morning in the pool – he always wore a Timex Iron Man, and I always thought that was cool, so I have one now. And usually, if I do a workout in the morning or if I go for a walk or something like that, I like to not bring my phone or Apple watch and anything like that – I like to just not have any technology with me. Still, it is fun to have a watch that has a little personality with its beeps and boops. The Iron Snail Okay, I won’t go super into technology because last time I checked, this isn’t MKBHD – this is my setup right now:iPhone 13, 14-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max 64 gig RAM, and then I have my iPad M1, which I had in my last EDC article. It was way less important then than it is now because now that I’m designing clothes and logos and everything like that, I use the Apple Pencil and the iPad all the time. The Iron Snail Anyways, okay – cameras! This goes both ways: professional and for fun. A lot of you ask me what I shoot my videos on, and it is the Sony A7 S3 mixed with 99.9% of the time a Sigma 24-70 2.8 Art lens. One of the things I’m actually really sentimental about is the lens because for the past almost three years, I have filmed everything on that lens seven days a week – if someone stole that lens I’d be really sad. I shoot film only for fun when I’m not working, but I also have a Leica M4 P, and a Pentax Spotmatic SP2. The Spotmatic is actually an amazing camera – I got it for my sister many, many years ago. She never used it, so I stole it and never told her about it. I figured whenever I visit a factory that’s making something for the Snail I’ll take pictures on the Leica with the Flash and show them to you. Boot Talk (Kind Of) In my notes for this section, I just wrote “boots” – I don’t actually have a specific pair of boots to show you, so just picture a lot of different boots. Vibergs are on their way – Oxford 145s, and then I’ll probably get boots later, but it’s very exciting. I love boots and can’t live without boots! Next up is my briefcase – my girlfriend Taylor says I always say the name horribly wrong. It is my Bleu de Chauffe bag, and I love it. This is the postman bag in size medium. I’m friends with Bleu de Chauffe. They sent me this for free, but they never follow up or ask for a review or anything – they just say, “Pick what bag you want this year,” and then they mail it to me. I highly suggest you check them out, they’re super nice people. I don’t know if that matters – I always say when brands are nice, I don’t know if you care, but most brands that I talk to are very nice people, so it’s kind of nice to support nice people, you know? So I don’t know. Either way, they’re incredibly nice people. This bag, not that it particularly matters, has never failed to get me a compliment. I get complimented on this bag every single time I have it out, and I have actually had three women compliment me on how nice it smells if it’s in a room near them! I love that bag – it is stone-washed vegetable tan leather, so it’s very soft. It has a wool liner on the inside for your laptop, which is fantastic. Also, a bag that I saw in Denmark that I chased a woman down for is the Bree Elch bag – that bag is crazy! I haven’t bought that bag yet, but it’s one of the most gorgeous bags I have ever seen. The Iron Snail And finally, the first knife I talked about is the last item because it’s not just the Opinel number eight – it’s the Opinel number eight picnic plus set or whatever it’s called. This makes the hood go crazy – people 100% of the time, every time, go ballistic when they see the little add-ons that you could do with this knife, and I think it’s brilliant! I don’t think it was originally designed like this, but there’s a little slot when the knife is folded down that you could put other things into, and you make a picnic set out of it. So I travel for work a lot, but by travel, I mean I drive to New Jersey, and I eat my lunch in my car, so I always bring this with me to use as my fork, knife, and spoon, and I think you’ll never regret it in your entire life and there are very few things that you’ll never regret – one of them is also the five-year Midori Journal! So I travel for work a lot, but by travel, I mean I drive to New Jersey, and I eat my lunch in my car, so I always bring this with me to use as my fork, knife, and spoon, and I think you’ll never regret it in your entire life and there are very few things that you’ll never regret – one of them is also the five-year Midori Journal! love your posts about your notebooks for 2023!! Would it be alright to ask what you'll be using each notebook for? I'm trying to figure out my own planning system for the next year :>
Hi! I’m glad you enjoy them :’) I’ll explain a bit about them below:

I have a five years diary from Leuchtturm 1917 and I’ve been using it since 2020. I mainly use it to write one or two lines each day about how I felt and what was on my mind. Really putting it simple and just straight to paper. Recently I purchased two notebooks from Midori, which I really wanted to try out. One of them is a slim planner for daily tasks and overview of deadlines and appointments. Then a notebook to use as bullet journal. In my bullet journal I write down my goals for the year first and then divide the pages in the 12 months. For each month I do a cover, goals for the month, money tracker, habit tracker, movies I’ve watched, books I’ve read and daily songs that I’ve listen to. Then we have my grimoire which is a notebook from moleskine that I’ve been using as grimoire. I am very interested in magic and witchcraft and in my grimoire I track down various things such as tarot readings, spells I’ve tried out and different information and things I’ve learnt. Then I got a new blank moleskine today which I’ll use as my coping mechanism to just write whatever comes in my head and what has me overthinking. I’ve been doing this for years and it helped me to deal with things. Another notebook that I’ve got (which is also not pictured above), is a Moomin colorbook which also is a diary. I plan to use that one as my graduate diary to write down each day one thing that made me happy. This year I felt that I’ve done not much of that so I’m picking up for next day. I also want to point out that all the journal / notebooks I’ve purchased were on sale besides the Leuchtturm one. And non of this is sponsored :D if you have more questions feel free to ask away 💚 I hope this was kinda helpful!

March 4th 2022 // Setting up my Midori A6 1 Day 1 Page. This is a gorgeous planner that come with a set of 12 tabs that you can use to divide your pages. The paper quality is literally *perfection*. It is fountain pen friendly and gel pen friendly. Virtually no ghosting or bleed through - at least not with my Ferris Wheel Press and Iroshizuku inks, and Uniball Signo Gel pens that I have been using. The "M" in Midori must stand for minimal because let me tell you, the design of the daily and monthly layouts is super simple and clean. There is a very dainty hourly layout on the left side of each page (also very minimal I might add!), and a spot for you to jot the date at the top but that's it. There is a lot of space and yet it's far from boring or intimidating. The cream colour of the MD paper is bursting with personality and, if I'm honest, the sheer act of flipping from page to page fills me with excitement! The MD planner has about 15 monthly pages, starting from January 2022 and ending at March 2023. The monthly views are the only thing dated in this planner. The daily pages are undated, and this is the part of the planner that I feel might make it less functional. I use it as a daily journal so it doesn't bother me too much. Though, because it is a daily planner (1 Day 1 Page) I am slightly afraid of bulking it up, since I love doing collages. But, I've been experimenting with different items such as transfers and stamping, so we'll see how that goes. Ohh, and my favourite aspect of this planner are the lines at the edge of the pages. These are secret to getting perfectly lined tabs!! Anyway, what do you think? I'll do a mid-year review on this planner and give you guys my thoughts on how I've been using it and if I'm leaning towards getting one next year.
