The Lost Special
CW for discussion of sexual abuse and capital punishment.
Originally published in The Strand in 1898, i.e. during the hiatus years, this would be collected with a bunch of other Doyle stories in the Round the Fire Stories collection released in 1898. Doyle continued to have stories regularly published during the hiatus.
The London and West Coast Railway Company is fictitious; the company that operated the line discussed in this route was the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), the biggest revenue earner of the period due to the sheer size of its operations. It would become part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1922 during "Grouping" i.e. the merger of British railway companies into four major ones. The LNWR name came back as the London Northwestern Railway brand of West Midlands Trains in 2017, operating commuter and semi-fast services from Euston. That franchise is due to operate until 2026, at which point, considering the likely result of the upcoming election, it will be nationalised. What happens to the name after that remains to be seen.
Liverpool Central refers to two stations. The one here is the six-platform "High Level" station, opened in 1874 as the headquarters of the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) and offering services to Manchester Central, London St. Pancras or even Harwich for the ferry services to the Netherlands. The CLC remained independent after Grouping
There was also, slightly to the North West. the 1892-opened "Low Level" station, that was underground, opened by the Mersey Railway, but with staircase access to the High Level one and provision for a through railway connection left to that station if it was decided to join the two lines. This operated local trains towards Birkenhead using the world's second underground railway after London. This also stayed its own operation after Grouping in 1922; both companies would become part of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948.
In 1966, the Beeching Axe saw the High Level station have nearly all its services diverted to Liverpool Lime Street, with only those to Gateacre still calling there. BR wanted to stop those entirely, but local opposition prevented that. With no need for six platforms, two become a car park and the station ended up with just one functional platform in 1970, ending up in rather a state of decay. It shut entirely in 1972 and was demolished, the Gateacre services going, along with the whole North Liverpool Extension Line.
The Low Level station, however, still very busy, would have better fortunes - it would become the centre piece of the new Merseyrail network. The station was renovated, the two lines were linked and today Liverpool Central is one of the busiest stations in the UK outside of Greater London. However, the eastern part of the planned loop, including services to Gateacre, fell victim to budget cuts in the late 1970s.
Rochdale is a town in the Greater Manchester area - at the time it was a textiles hub, but that very much declined from the 1950s and the place has acquired a bad reputation. In 2012, a child sex abuse ring involving British Pakistanis "grooming" white girls was convicted in a high-profile trial and the resulting public reaction was, to put it mildly, racially-tinged. It also came out that the town's deceased former MP (who had in fact been knighted), one Cyril Smith, was a paedophile.
"Specials" refer to trains arranged outside the usual timetable, often in connection with some event. These included football excursions (or FOOTEX in BR parlance) carrying fans to away games around the country. In the hooligan-heavy 1970s and 1980s, BR would use older carriages due to the frequency of them getting damaged by drunken supporters, the whole thing becoming a policing headache. Others included various enthusiast-oriented journeys and "Merrymaker" mystery trips, usually to a seaside destination.
The main companies do not really do these today in anything like the numbers they used to, but various private companies have stepped in, including a West Coast Railways Company oddly enough, that provides the rolling stock, locomotives and drivers for the Jacobite tourist service from Fort William to Mailaig. These charter trains can be found operating multiple times a week, being sold through various different companies. Most use heritage rolling stock with vintage steam or diesel engines involved, with a variety of types catering to your tastes, although a big wallet is generally needed. Like at least £100 for standard class without dining and even then the schedule might not be the most convenient; these trains are planned around the regular services and you might have a long wait sitting in sidings for the next bit of your path to be clear.
In any event, the special train would have cost around £5,412 adjusted for inflation. However, a cursory glance suggests it would actually cost far more to do that today - hence the high prices modern "specials" charge passengers.
Signal boxes were required to log the details of trains passing through - the type could be identified by various lights arranged on the front and later the specific service by four-character codes. Today this is done electronically and monitored at larger control centres - older boxes have generally closed, with some being transported to heritage railways for their use. I would assume that the stations not mentioned did not have their own signal box.
In terms of the stations mentioned here, these were on the 1830-opened Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the first intercity railway in the world.
This route is today part of the City Line in the Merseytravel Network - trains are today operated by Northern or TransPenine Express. It was electrified in 2015. For each station in turn...
St Helens Junction: Still open.
Collins Green: Closed 1951.
Earlestown: Still open, despite being listed for closure in the 1963 Beeching Report.
Newton-le-Willows: Still open. Even had a Motorail terminal for a while, but this is long gone.
Kenyon Junction: Closed to passengers 1961, shut entirely 1963. Various locals have called for reopening it.
Barton Moss, closed 1929.
Parliamentary trains are those which railway companies had a legal obligation to operate - basically to provide cheap services for workers. This could mean one train per day on a route. Some did the bare minimum, some did a lot more. With this requirement no longer around, the term has evolved to mean services run at the legal minimum, even as low as one train a week, because it's cheaper to do that rather than go through a closure process. In some cases, the route would be used for engineering work diversions and so it is needed to keep up driver familarity. Current examples include Pilning, which has two trains a week on a Saturday. The most notable is Teeside Airport, which is meant to serve the airport of that name that operates four to six passenger flights a day, but is a fifteen-minute walk away, so getting a bus is much more preferred. This got one train westbound a week until May 2022, when its platform was deemed unsafe and Teeside International Airport refuses to pay for repairs.
Railway companies had their own police forces; these would later come under the British Transport Police.
Many mines and industrial planets had connections to the national network for transporting goods like coal or clay; BR even developed a "Merry-Go-Round" system allowing hoppers to be filled up and emptied while moving at a very slow speed to save time on shunting; newer versions are still in use, despite the coal market having massively declined. Mines would have their own engines - the nationalised National Coal Board kept steam locomotives going until 1982, 14 years after BR stopped using them, with some of their former engines now featuring on preserved lines.
The Vistula river runs through central Poland, including Warsaw.
Many mines would be closed once their seams were worked out to the point of it being now longer economical to run; some are now tourist attractions, at least in limited sections.
France used the guillotine for capital punishment until the abolition of that in 1977. It would also be extensively used, in a slightly different form in the German states, including extensively by the Nazis, until 1966, when East Germany switched to shooting people in the back of the head.
New Caledonia is a French territory in the Southern Pacific that was used as a penal colony at the time; it is currently in a state of political turmoil in a row over expanding the franchise to cover more recent arrivals, something opposed by indigenous groups seeking independence. The proposal has been suspended at time of writing due to France's upcoming elections.

Getting back from the coronation ceremony never felt….this draining. You took off your red heels as you reached the second story of your palace, sluggish and exhausted from mingling with thousands of different people out there in the ceremony. It was truly an honor for you to be called and addressed with the newly acclaimed title. You were now the certified Queen of Midland. Starting tomorrow, you have to make the necessary preparations for another upcoming event—a sort of celebration that welcomes you into the new world of authoritarian rule.
With that, you thought of treating yourself to a warm bath as a reward. You immediately rushed to the bathroom, its golden, intricately designed walls standing out as you opened the steel doors. Even the black sink formed a heart shape, the architects paying very close attention to the way you exactly wanted your home to look like. Your approach to architecture was not far off from a gothic Medieval look, the castle’s dark mahogany interior filling your surroundings with a sense of regality.
Turning the faucet on, you stripped off your gown and waited with barely any clothes as the tub filled itself with water. You looked for your favorite bath bomb, a crimson-colored sphere that had fragrance resembling that of a wilted flower. Whatever this wilted flower was isn’t close to your favorite flowers of all time (you loved collecting flowers), but its smell still gave you the satisfaction you so needed for sheer relaxation.
Once the tub was full, you dipped your body as the bath bomb slowly dissolved into the water, leaving a blood red color. You sighed in relief as you entered the tub bare naked, contemplating your future as you wallowed in pure tranquility. You slowly felt yourself lose consciousness, unmindful of your surroundings as the door to the bathroom was still wide open. You were wide open.
In the exterior of the palace was a fight between Griffith and three royal guards. Griffith dashed forward, aiming for a swift kick to hit the crotch of one guard. This led to the guard falling to the ground while Griffith pounced over to stab the guard right in the heart. Ceasing to get up, the two remaining guards grabbed him by the arms, making Griffith unable to resist. Griffith drops his sword, and as a last resort, spits on one of the guards’ faces to create a sense of distraction. Causing one of the guards to shrug and flinch, Griffith took advantage of the guard’s weakening grip as he elbowed the guard to the face. Quickly picking up his sword, he managed to deliver a slice through the cheek of the other guard, totally knocking off the guard’s helmet.
“Griffith!” Rickert yelled, getting off his horse and running towards the bewitching young man who was determined enough to enter your castle.
The sword fight went on for about ten minutes or more, this time with Rickert joining in. The fight continued to ensue, the noise of swords slashing against each other. The noise echoed through the hallways as there was no one else in sight.
Trapping the remaining two guards by wrapping their arms around their necks, Rickert and Griffith strangled the guards altogether, restricting airflow to enter their windpipe. It wasn’t long before the guards lost consciousness as they were freed, dropping down to the floor as if they were lifeless bodies.
Rickert panted hard, calling out Griffith’s name one more time. “Griffith….Let’s head back to the camp!”
“You might as well leave, Rickert. There may be more guards awaiting our presence and I don’t want to risk getting my comrades hurt.” Griffith replied confidently.
“Ugh, if you say so….” Rickert huffed in annoyance, following Griffith’s orders as he fled from the palace.
Griffith preyed his way into the entrance of the palace by swiftly lockpicking the doors with his sword’s tip. It was strange how the security of the palace was neglected especially at a time like this, a time where a big event was to be held with regards to the development of Midland.
Tumblr media
Entering the palace was…quite the strange, yet self-gratifying experience for Griffith. He certainly wasn’t used to the sophisticated look of the interior where black and gold dominated the scene. The architecture was far more impressive than the usual camps where he and his comrades slept and lived in.
But, in a way, this experience of visiting the palace only reminded him further of his dream. The closer his footsteps were as he walked up the stairs, the closer he was to achieving his dream. This was his plan. It was all a part of his devious plan.
You woke up from the bath, feeling refreshed as opposed to minutes ago. “My, has it really been an hour?” You stood up from the tub and reached for the bath robe, preparing yourself for bed.
Exiting the bathroom, you felt an eerie cold breeze blow through your hair. Was it the wind?
The lightning outside struck harder than expected, a flash of white light overtaking your vision. In that moment, you made sense of what seemed to be a silhouette of some sort…..a silhouette that belonged to a rather familiar young man you constantly kept out of your thoughts.
From behind, the charming young man spoke.
“Princess.”
You froze dead in your tracks, not knowing what to say, act, or think at that given time frame. All you could picture in your mind was the way he emphasized the word “princess” in such an elegant, smug, confident, yet vulgar tone.
No. No. No. Don’t look back. Try to picture that all this was just a dream by closing your eyes and count to three.
One. Two. Three.
No changes.
It was dark before you even knew it, the thunderstorm completely overtaking the atmosphere as the man behind you approached by taking five steps closer.
“You’ve been looking quite the buzz today, my lady.”
You slowly turned around to face the young, depraved man before you.
“G-Griffith?”

Day #4 - Reticent
It was a perfect night in Thanalan. The air was slightly cool with nary an errant breeze, the sky was clear and full of stars, even the insects had fallen silent for the upcoming event. The groundskeepers had enthusiastically seen to that. Alexander cut a tall silhouette astride an ornate sandstone podium at the garden's gate, away from the bustle of the estate proper and it's horde of servants.
The Midlander couldn't help but fidget, constantly adjusting his attire. The glove must blend with the cuff, but not be restrained by it. No creases where not necessary. Lapel chain to hang three ilms from the breast pocket. Buttons polished to a sheen, the rabble won't notice but He will. Hair... A few black strands streaked with grey fell over his left eye, an ever present flaw no matter the stylist. Barely acceptable but too late to fix. Thankfully He seems to tolerate it. The guests would be arriving soon, and his role was merely to greet them with the charm and attention each deserved.
He spotted the light of the first carriage a malm away at the main gate. Alexander did a final once over of his suit, adjusting the fit of the gloves and smoothing over the jacket's fabric, the inky blue of the attire almost fading into the night around him. Taking his place at the gate, he opened the jewel adorned guest book to the first page, putting on the requisite smile. This is very much beneath me. I'm being punished, aren't I.
-
As the first carriage arrived at the garden entrance Alexander could already see a trail forming down the path. No time for idle pleasantries it would seem, especially not with our first guest. His train of thought was quickly interrupted as the first pair of guests strode up to the podium, a Hellsguard pair, complexions of stone and sand. Alexander offered a half bow as they approached, holding the pose as he addressed them.
"The East Aldenard Trading Company is honored to have the attendance of Amajina and Sons this night. His Lordship bids you enjoy your fill until the sun shines. Of particular interest to the good sers, we have arranged an exhibition match between one of the Coliseum's rising stars and an Auri warrior from the far east."
The older of the two gave a low, raspy laugh, as if rocks were ground together in his throat. "Your master is trying to show off I see, but my son will take down whichever wins. Come on Zimberk." He beckoned to the younger roegadyn and the two strode onwards towards the mansion, now lit up in extravagant splendour. Brutes. Predictable and useful. No sooner had Alexander raised his head was the next guest striding his way, with a line threatening to form behind them.
-
"Lady Sartorie, what an unexpected pleasure." Witch. Will need to schedule an Ossuary inspection.
"Ser Tobias, ever the picture of health!" I'm surprised his heart didn't give out on the ride over.
"Lord and Lady Sark, we hope the journey from Coerthas was a pleasant one. Ah, and this must be your dear daughter that you spoke of last turn, she takes after you both." There's a bloodlust in those eyes. Will have the menagerie secured.
"Captain Doenstyrmwyn, His Lordship is quite keen to make your acquaintance. Hmm? Yes of course, our records are quite discreet, sudden additional guests are no issue." She's 'very' green, the Monetarists will eat her alive.
-
The line of guests had seemed to stretch for an eternity, but barely two bells had passed before they were all accounted for and enjoying themselves. Alexander allowed himself a moment to breathe and stretch. There was an ache in his left hand, chronic, but the note work didn't help. After composing himself and attending to his outfit, he took up the guest book and strode back towards the estate, banking around towards the provisioner's entrance. Now for the real work to begin. It's going to be a very long night.

Something About Eating the Rich - [Emory Sands x Berkeley F. De la Porta, 16+]
Summary: The actual events of one of Sands' and De la Porta's security walkthroughs.
Word Count: 2,487
(No one is gonna read this. Why did I spend a solid 2 hours on it.)
~~~
Emory Sands muffles a yawn with his hand as he walks De la Porta throughout the layout of the 40th floor for what seemed like the hundredth time. It’s not that he wasn’t used to doing these routine security walk-throughs. The MSIG event hall was quite the hot spot for a whole number of events. Though, he was often able to throw out a couple of fancy phrases and play-up the security features or qualifications of his team leaving the normal event planner satisfied. Only the actual night of the event was anything to be stressed over.
Berkley F. De la Porta (whatever the F stood for) was a different story. Despite previous events running without a hitch, De la Porta had the need to helicopter over every single aspect of security for this event. Sands was certainly getting exhausted with it. It’s not uncommon for him to have to occasionally deal with the eccentrics of the upper class, but this man had been taking up a painful amount of his time with his upcoming event. All because of those goddamn paintings.
It was a confusing and headache-inducing time dealing with De la Porta. Despite all of these security measures, questions, and requirements, the one time Sands actually recommended something to protect the paintings it was quickly shot down. Sands would never understand the rapidly changing mindsets of the board. All he really wanted was the night to be over, a bourbon and ginger at his lips, and the low rumble of a muffled Midlands Marauders game as he inevitably passes out on his apartment’s couch only to be startled awake by his alarm a few hours later. Rinse and repeat.
Sands sighs as De la Porta walks confidently in front of him as if he owns the place. Well, he supposes De la Porta does literally own the building but that’s beside the point. After about 9 walkthroughs of the building, he would’ve had to have the 40th floor committed to memory. Hell, why was he really even there? De la Porta had circled through these halls plenty on his own. Sands smirks to himself. De la Porta should just do the security walk-throughs by himself if he was such a “security tech wiz”. Sands would much rather just sit in the Command Center like normal. Dark, quiet except for the gentle buzz of the ceiling lights above his chair, the game pulled up on his phone, and his half-eaten box of doughnuts. Alone. Yes. That was perfect.
“Alright. We aught to wrap things up. It’s getting dark and I’m sure you’d rather be on your way home by now.” Sands remarks, gently rubbing the back of his shaved head.
De la Porta stops dead in his tracks, heels sharply clicking on the tile as he does so. He throws up a hand still facing away from Sands. His head sharply looks over his shoulder sending his brown curls bouncing.
“I have one more concern!” De la Porta asserts.
Keeping himself from aggressively rolling his eyes, Sands forces a smile. These numerous “last concerns” were certainly making the glowing red exit sign in his periphery more and more appealing by the minute.
“Porta, I can promise you that our measures are up to snuff. There’s nothing to be worried about. Trust me, you’ve made sure of that.” Sands grits through his teeth.
“See!! That’s where you’re wrong!”
De la Porta promptly turns around and points a finger at Sands. Sands crosses his arms and quirks an eyebrow.
“I thought as the esteemed Director of Security of my Miller Tower, you would’ve realized this sooner!”
“I’m glad you’re here to remind me then, hmm? What have I forgotten?”
Sands subtly checks his watch. Dammit. The game had already started. He’s got to get this wrapped up. Just play nice and everything will be finished soon. As soon as De la Porta finishes his tantrums and string of “geniuses”.
“The HELIPAD!”
The billionaire smiles big, the ends of his mustache seemingly extra curly with this exclamation of self-thought brilliance. Sands simply stands there. Arms crossed. He smiles slightly at the question. Not a nice smile. One of those “are you stupid” smiles you get when you ask for black coffee at a particularly bougie down-town coffee shop when you’re running late for work and your usual spot is closed. Sands was familiar.
“The helipad?”
“Yes! It’s a security risk!”
“I assure you its not. No one can even land on that thing without clearing it with me first.   You are your friends will be perfectly safe landing on it in case you needed to come to a charity gala…in a private jet.”
“That’s not what I’m concerned about!” De la Porta marches up to Sands and huffs. His hands go wide as he looks up at Sands. “Someone could just land on there in the middle of the event and rob! Everyone!”
Sands starts to chuckle before thinking about it more and laughing, placing his hands on his thighs. De la Porta lets out a bit of a struggled, frustrated noise as he stomps his foot on the ground.
“This is serious! I’m not going to have anything happen to my precious Morisot paintings!”
De la Porta pauses for a moment before adding-
“-and all the other auction items of course. It would be a travesty.”
Sands rolls his eyes before regaining his composure and shoving his hands back into his pockets. He looks down at De la Porta.
“Apologies. You’re right. Though, the helipad access is secured with two armored doors that only a special security keycard or a button from the Command Center can open. There are no worries there. Anything els-“
“I would still like the survey the area. For-! For-! … To make absolutely sure.”
Crossing his arms, De la Porta puffs out his chest as he shoots Sands a determined look. Sands’ mouth quirks at the request.
“As I explained before, it’s a bit of a hassle to get out there and it really is getting late.”
“I have plenty of time if it is to ensure this event has top security! If you fail to plan, you plan for failure as I always say! Come come. I’m sure you already have the extra security card on you.”
Sands barely has any time to react before De la Porta grabs his arm and begins pulling him towards the Command Center. He quickly regains his balance and stops in his tracks. This coincidentally stops the smaller man as well who begins to start with his usual griping.
“Look. Porta. It’s safe. I’ve had no issues with the helipad in the past. There’s no reason to go up there. Besides, its dark and I already hate going out there. Try to avoid it if I can. Just take my word on this one, ok?”
“What? You scared of heights or something?”
Sands remains silent at what was meant to be playful teasing. Playful teasing he usually would’ve shot down. Though, after working on a case of a woman who murdered an ex by pushing him off the top of a ferris wheel, Sands’ outlook on those sorts of things were significantly changed.
“Oh.”
The smaller man straightened his posture in surprise. Looks like he was also expecting the same response. This doesn’t last for long as his familiar smirk creeps back on his face.
“Well, in that case how about you just give me the keycard for it and I’ll take a look myself!” “I’m sorry but that’s against protocol.”
“Aweee, come on. You trust me, don’t you? I’m not going to do anything! You know that.”
Sands looks away as he thinks for a moment. His hand fiddles with his tie clip before sighing.
“Fine. But you can’t have mine. I’ll make you a temporary one.”
De la Porta’s face lights up as the security guard continues their walk to the Command Center. He runs quickly right up beside him and walks in stride. Sands stares blankly forward as the billionaire next to him begins to mutter on and on about lord knows what. Something about how they make a great team or how he was surprised that there was something that scared the “great Emory Sands”. Sands was just tired and trying to think about what lie he was gonna tell once De la Porta actually went up to the helipad and saw there was not in fact two armored doors but just the regular staircase door like all the others.
Sands opens the door to the Command Center and flicks on the dimly lit lights. He slides his slightly worn down office chair out from under the desk and takes a seat. He begins typing on the computer, pulling up the software for a regular temporary keycard and prayed De la Porta wouldn’t notice.
“This shouldn’t take too long. Just give me a moment.”
De la Porta leans on the doorframe and takes a look at his nails while he waits for Sands to finish. Clearly not a patient person and uncomfortable with the silence, De la Porta pipes up after a minute or two.
“I think I should buy you a drink! To celebrate. We’ve made so much progress together and I want to thank you for the hard work you’ve put into this.”
Sands remains fixed at the computer, only breaking to lean down and grab a keycard from one of the drawers.
“I’m sorry but I’m going to have to decline this time. I need to get back to my apartment. I need to… water my plants.”
He tried to come up with a better excuse than “I’m missing my favorite team playing right now” but… well. He didn’t have much.
De la Porta lets out a hum in understanding and shifts his weight against the doorframe. The clock outside of the door clicks a few times before he pipes up again.
“You’re a very lonely man, you know that?”
“Excuse me?”
Sands quickly stops digging through the drawer and sits up to look at De la Porta. Those blue eyes pierce straight through him as the rich man stands up straight and crosses his arms.
“I’ve never heard you talk any about a partner or children or pets or anything. Just money and work. That’s all. Or lack of money that is. Apparently they don’t pay you enough. Is that all life is to you, Emory? Work?” Sands scowls and begins to get out of his chair.
“Look, I’m not going to get into my personal life with you and you have no right to stand there and berate me. You don’t know-“
De la Porta quickly steps into the room and pushes Sands back into the chair. He shifts a knee between Sands’ legs and rests his hands on Sands’ shoulders. He smiles darkly and gently traces a ringed thumb over one of the scars on Sands’ cheeks.
“Nearly 5 decades of life without actually living. How sad… You know, I have the world right in the palms of my hands. I have everything I want. I can get everything I want. I can go wherever I please whenever I please. I live, Emory. I have power. I have the power to make my life whatever I want it to be. Now, isn’t that something?”
Sands makes a struggled noise and places his hand on De la Porta’s thigh. Though, his admitted weak pushes are only met with the knee being pressed further in. A strangled gasp escapes his throat and De la Porta leans down lower to his face. He hovers over the security guard’s pale, scarred skin, letting his hot breath trail down his face.
“Tell me, Emory. How long has it been since you’ve truly enjoyed yourself? A year? Two years? A decade-?”
“Get off of me.”
“Darling~, we both know that if you truly wanted me to stop, you would’ve pushed me off long ago. You’re quite a lot bigger than I am.”
De la Porta pushes the chair up against one of the file cabinets and shifts to sit in Sands’ lap. He leans down to his neck and starts to pepper it with some light kisses. He feels Sands tense under him and his hands gently grip onto his hips. One of De la Porta’s hands slowly goes to Sands’ tie and begins to loosen it.
“Mmm, a nice cologne you wear. Who’s it for?”
Sands lets out a huff as he smiles, trying to regain control over his breathing.
“Maybe it’s just for me.”
“Oh, I seriously doubt that.”
De la Porta finishes unknotting Sands’ tie and casts it aside. He unbuttons the top couple of buttons on his crisp, white shirt before shifting back to Sands’ neck. De la Porta presses his mouth to it and begins to suck. The security guard grips tighter onto De la Porta’s hips as he chokes down a moan. The front of his pants tighten as he feels heat spread down in his lower half. De la Porta chuckles he pulls away slightly.
“You know, I really do listen to what you say, Emory. Even something about having ‘unique feelings’ for me when you gave me the tac plan. Not something I expect you to say to every person that wanders this tower. Not even to please your boss.”
Sands shifts in the chair and subconsciously grinds upward to try to relieve some of the pressure. De la Porta moans lowly in his ear before placing a hand on Sands’ chest to help himself sit up. He smirks and lifts up off of Sands’ hips. Sands grimaces at the sudden lack of weight. He tries to pull De la Porta back down on his hips as the smaller man chuckles.
“I find it so interesting how much you try to gain power back over all of these high profile people with your little passive aggressive comments and sarcasm. But truly you don’t like being in charge. You miss having someone telling you what to do, isn’t that right? Is that why you retired so early once you became a lieutenant?”
Sands loosens his grip slightly and De la Porta presses his lips against his. He places his finger under Sands’ chin as he pulls away, forcing him to make eye contact.
“Good boy~. How cute. I knew there would be something to break that levelheadedness of yours. So desperate… must have been a really long time then, hmm? Not to worry, darling. You don’t have to think. I’m going to tell you exactly what you have to do to please me and then I’ll give you a little reward for a job well done. A payment since you like those so much. How does that sound?”
Sands smirks and squeezes De la Porta’s hips.
“Yes, sir~"
Here Comes The Sun
When opportunity knocks, it behooves you to answer the door, and answer it fast. Opportunity seldom knocks twice, and if you miss it, then it’s on you. And if you are a company, you best be ever mindful of what’s going on around you and who or what may be knocking, ready to seize the moment.
Like Frito Lay's SunChips and Moon Pie are doing right now, leaning into the upcoming total solar eclipse that will occur early afternoon of Monday 8th April. With brand names referencing celestial bodies, this is a no-brainer. But come Tuesday the 9th, the party will be over until 2044, when the next total solar eclipse is visible in the US.
SunChips is selling a limited edition Pineapple Habanero and Black Bean Spicy Gouda chip, and have partnered with astronaut Kellie Gerardi for the promotion. Moon Pie, reprising its effort from the 2017 eclipse, has gone all out with their boxed Survival Kit that includes four Moon Pies and two pairs of eclipse viewing glasses.
Tumblr media
And as you might expect, both are pulling out all the stops on social media.
This is classic marketing opportunism, and it’s fun. No one is trying to capitalize on a bad thing, and all the other brands that do not have a celestial connection will have to sit this one out. Opportunity, in this case, came knocking for a select few, and only two answered the door.
Of course, there is some risk inherent, because all of that merchandise will be extremely dated on Tuesday. The shelf life is short, and while it might be possible that some collectors might clamor for unsold Moon Pie Survival Kit boxes if only because it is dated, I could see these things winding up at Big Lots and Ollie’s in a week or so.
Along the path of totality, hotels have been reserved for years. Even campgrounds are full up. But, as we know all too well, Mother Nature might not cooperate. We need clear skies for these kinds of things to happen, and the farther east and north you go along the arc of totality, the more those odds shrink, based on historic data.
As for Amarillo and Canyon, we will be at 87% totality, and of the cities on or near totality, have among the highest percentage of available sunlight year round (Lubbock and Midland are very similar too, all of us between 73% and 75%, and in the Top 15 of the nation). We might not have totality here, but the odds are more in our favor to see the event. Oh, and the event lasts only for about four minutes, so there’s little margin for error. Even Andy Warhol had 11 minutes more.
I am bummed that I have a campus class that morning at 9:30, and I can’t just cancel it for an eclipse. But…I could hop in my van at 10:45 and drive toward Dallas like a mad man, probably getting close to Vernon at the precise moment. I can reschedule office hours, because with the next total eclipse not happening for 20 years, I would be 85, and who knows what I’ll be able to do then.
Or just stay in Canyon and be happy with 87%. It will still make for some amazing photos. And while the special SunChip flavor doesn’t sound all that appealing to me, I would be happy to bring along some Moon Pies wherever I happen to be. The marketer in me is all too happy to throw some props to the companies answering opportunity. It’s a lesson we should all be remembering.
Credits: Clinton Lewis, West Kentucky University Did you see October 14th’s solar eclipse? Most of the time we can easily forget that we are on a planet spinning and orbiting in space with other celestial bodies. Watching the Moon move across the face of the Sun reminds us of our place in the solar system.  Several NASA science teams and many NASA volunteers used the October 14 eclipse to collect data and test observation protocols, software, hardware, and logistics. They met enthusiastic crowds of people taking in the spectacle and making unique observations. The October eclipse was an “annular” eclipse, meaning that some sunlight always leaked around the edges of the moon. The next solar eclipse, on April 8, 2024, will be a total eclipse. Total eclipses are rare scientific opportunities, so NASA teams used the October eclipse to practice and prepare for the upcoming April eclipse. In New Mexico, the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta rolled right into an Annular Eclipse event! An estimated 100,000 people took in the view of the annular eclipse of the Sun from Albuquerque, which was directly on the path where the eclipse reached its maximum – the path of annularity. The project team deployed eight AudioMoth recording devices the day before the eclipse and retrieved them the day after the eclipse to support research on whether or not eclipses affect life – and sounds – on Earth.   They also recruited staff and visitors to the nearby Valles Caldera National Preserve to participate in Eclipse Soundscapes as Observers. Many folks used the prompting worksheets – and eclipse glasses – provided by Eclipse Soundscapes to record and report their multisensory experience of the eclipse.  Eclipse Soundscapes Team members Dr. Henry “Trae” Winter and MaryKay Severino, getting ready to deploy an AudioMoth device at the Randall Davey Audubon Center & Sanctuary in Sante Fe, NM Credit: MaryKay Severino Valles Caldera Park visitors used the Eclipse Soundscapes worksheet and eclipse glasses distributed by Park Rangers to learn more about the Eclipse Soundscapes project, take notes on what nature changes they heard, saw, or felt during the annular eclipse, and then use a QR code to submit their observations to the project.  Credit: MaryKay Severino The SunSketcher team gathered in Odessa, TX, together with other eclipse chasers,  to test their new cell phone app. This app will allow volunteers to help measure the size and shape of the Sun during April’s total eclipse.
