Anne and James and sibling OCs in 1948
1948 being the year Anne and James married. Penelope is Anne's sister, and everybody else is James's family.
Cropped sections are further down. There's some connections from @108garys 's Super Massive Family Tree that play into everything (here's their portrait of older Penelope), and I'll leave it to them if they want to refresh everybody on the details. (Edit: 108garys gave lore in the notes). Some of the OCs have more lore than others, but I'm not getting into it here or doing deep dives about personalities and all that, so I just stuck together very non-deep little likes/dislikes/favorite activities lists for everyone. But first some notes on the art:
I went for a balance between dressy and casual, so most of these wouldn't be everyday outfits but none of them are formal either.
Nobody has naturally curly hair. Shirley has a perm, and Anne and Penelope use only curlers. (Unlike the other two, Penelope doesn't curl it every day).
If Anne's dress looks piecemeal that's because it is. Around 1948 was when women's fashion was transitioning from shorter wartime styles (minimum fabric) to longer hemlines, but ofc most women didn't just toss out all their old clothes, so the new things they bought were in the new style, while they also continued wearing what they had and sometimes altered their shorter things in various ways. The white border on Anne's dress is a recent addition, and so is the embroidered pocket because big pockets were also fashionable and it was intended to make the border look more like it belongs.
Shirley uses a brace, a built up shoe, and sometimes a cane due to effects from having polio when she was very young.
Bob has been in the U.S. Army for four or so years and he's currently a corporal. If part of his uniform is inaccurate then oh well because there were some details I just wasn't finding clear answers on (do point it out if you know something that's wrong tho). Also that's his hat he's holding in case it's hard to tell.
Ok now for the other stuff:
Anne, age 17 -
Likes: Dancing; recycling; Frank Sinatra music (don't spread it around); telephone party lines; the scratchy sound of crossing things off her to-do list.
Dislikes: Noisy children; poetry; men's cologne; bleached blonde hair; house pets; wrinkled clothes; rain on her hairdo; complainers; people with bad posture; anonymous love letters; being late; people who are late; unraked leaves; these peasants (most of the boys at school); being told she's too opinionated.
Favorite activities: Growing plants, mostly flowers; taking the mick out of James ❤
Penelope, age 8 -
Likes: Bicycling; puppies; reading, mostly fairytales; sticky sweets; movie stars.
Dislikes: Mud; talking to strangers; not having had her first kiss yet; never getting the lowdown after Anne's dates.
Favorite activity: Eavesdropping on the phone party line with Anne.
Shirley, age 24 -
Likes: Card games; chickens; picnics; reading; red on just about anything.
Dislikes: Snow; frogs; Bob; the sound of her own voice.
Favorite activity: Canoe rides to read on the open water. Her preferred victims to accompany her are James (she'll use her oldest-sibling authority for as long as she can) and whoever she happens to be dating (is that a weird date? idk but she calls it a no-go with a guy if he can't handle the quiet time).
Bob (Robert), age 22 -
Likes: Arm candy; being outside; cheating at card games; beer; animals, especially wildlife; pulling practical jokes on April 2.
Dislikes: Peas; serious conversations.
Favorite activities: Hunting; chasing women. (These things are not connected).
James, age 19 -
Likes: Holidays; history; picking dumb arguments; playing hockey when the pond freezes over; reading; PDA with Anne ❤
Dislikes: Waiting; hand-me-down clothes; being called Jimbo; having glasses.
Favorite activity: Finding money on the ground.
Clarence, age 11 -
Likes: Pocket knives; pirates; model train sets and dollhouses type stuff.
Dislikes: Surprises; hugs; getting up early; "old" people; getting his picture taken (that one's partly a joke, because I accidentally drew him looking a little moody for no reason).
Favorite activity: Fixing appliances and things around the house (under supervision because "fixing" is a bit of an overstatement. He can take things apart but has yet to learn how to properly put them back together).
Kathy (Katherine), age 7 -
Likes: Parties; collecting things; Brothers Grimm-style fairytales; terrible creature horror B movies.
Dislikes: Bugs, especially bees; nightmares from the terrible creature horror B movies.
Favorite activity: Poking dead animals. Trips to the butcher and dead mice found in the attic are her lifeline for now until she starts doing dissections in school. She definitely doesn't store said mice under her bed in jars she stole from the kitchen.
~~
Cool so now that everyone is sufficiently grossed out I'll leave it here for now 😊 Stay tuned I guess because sooner or later I'm going to follow this up with the three youngest when they're older, around 1959 because that was a happening point in time for them. And lastly, 108garys is free to hate anything I wrote because we share the OCs but I consulted them on very little of this lol.

Of all the things I could have drawn I chose Lady Bradshaw and Jenny may because why not put to Midcentury blonde bombshells together ❤
I have named the ship of these two villianess baddies "mayshaw"

Yeah it's actually an unspoken confirmation that randolph is an unreliable narrator and that in reality he likely murdered Agnes in cold blood because he blamed her for everything that happened and then he lied to protect Mary's reputation
I also find it strange how suspiciously absent the ancient one was from his account of events, I mean the 03 cast is down there for 12 hours Max and are nearly tripping over the guy but the expedition was down there for the better part of a year and there was zero encounters? That's a little shady tbh, I wonder how much more would make sense if the ancient one was re-added to Randolph's account, like maybe old boy was out there sowing seeds and causing drama while the humans are getting increasingly paranoid with each other
I'm going to be real I wish the 40s cast was as popular as the main cast or if hoa generally had that cross era love that the other games do(I'll do my part in appreciating them that's for sure)
So is anyone going to talk about the fact that Lady Bradshaw still had her front teeth, of which she shouldn't with a parasite knocking them out, and if Mary really did turn, she would probably have been running around with the Ancient One? I mean, don't get me wrong, I can see Randolph mercy killing Mary buttttt I have questions as things are not adding up....
Btw to those who reacted to my last post, my twitch username is perrrfection. Since I'm doing this on my mobile, it's not letting me do the link. 🤦

Hodgson expedition height
So two whole years and this only just occurred to me that we can pin down the heights of hoa's Midcentury cast by comparisons using their group photo
(don't mind the numbers they are related to a different post)more undercut
First I determined the height difference of the tallest and shortest expedition members
Comparing those two lines to the statue behind them I then found a similar angle on one of the statues
Line up the photo as best as I'm able
Put a character at the estimated distance
Overlay again
As you can see salim is about the same height as Arthur Pulman give or take, I tried to get a general feel for m/f model height differences
As you can see there's some variance there and it comes out to most of the character models between between these two lines
And at the end of it all it looks a little like this
Feel like this is a very useful thing for those who are interested in the Midcentury era and I hope this further encourages people to show the expedition members more love and if there's people who are able to extrapolate more specific heights from this then be my guest, I'd love to hear about it
@kassiekolchek22 @delurkr @tatjana-fantasy @blubary @unhingedlesbear @ctrvpani @kindheartedgummybears @eddie-brii @ivycross @cupofangst
I know the sukesh model is various degrees of taller than the average but you get the gist

Evil
@kassiekolchek22 @mistmoose @delurkr @ivycross @tatjana-fantasy @blubary @oblivious-troll @lonnitamongus @ultrabananapudding I am again back to remind people that supermassive has so much potential in its mid-century(ish) era that covers the inpatient/until dawn's 1952 era, the man of Medan prologue and hoa's 1940s subplot, it also overlaps with James and anne(and anyone else their age) being in their late teens/early adulthood, I know people love my AUs and I'm hoping one day people will love this era just as much(I'll do it myself if I have to)
At any rate all that aside for this I've aimed a little earlier with a slightly younger Agnes Bradshaw with a look that I can only hope comes off cute and unsettling

@kassiekolchek22 @delurkr @tatjana-fantasy @ultrabananapudding @ivycross @blubary I figured I'd have a crack at colourising this one too, I personally think it's a bit sloppy compared to the last one but that might come down to a portrait being easier to do lol

@kassiekolchek22 @delurkr @mistmoose @lonnitamongus To take a quick break from being buried in all my clothes and drawing a bunch little fashion thingys(I've done 7 of 11, 3 since I got up and I'm still open to more suggestions) to do another round of "my interpretation of X's mum" in which I've come up with Gina Ferris who would have been Anthony Clarke's bio mum, it's my hope that both Anthony and Charlie's mothers look like them but not each other
Also, not Pam and Gina being depicted around the same age decades apart
Gina was the same age as the brothers father and they married pretty young because of becoming parents but she died and he didn't think he had it in him to raise a kid by himself before the age of twenty and Pam only knew him for a week at most while she was abroad

@kassiekolchek22 @mistmoose @delurkr @ivycross @oblivious-troll @ctrvpani @badideaart I swear it's coincidence that I finished this the day after the vampire Bradshaw art
I've been working on this for a while, I really want to hype hoa's 1940s cast, I want them to be loved like the 2003 cast and I'll do it myself if I have to 😁
I'd like to imagine that when the expedition was setting up in the throne room everyone was buzzing with excitement. All talk and work and high energy. Randolph sees Bradshaw ascending the stairs from the corner of his eye and as he turns to her she sits on the throne, like she owns it and everything before her(including them).
For the most fleeting moment he can't shake the feeling that he's made a huge mistake... Promptly Mary finds the explosives and the thought is forgotten

Mr & Mrs Clarke
@kassiekolchek22 @delurkr @abigails-batpack @badideaart it's been on my to do list for months to do something about the Clarke's awful wedding photo, namely I wanted to make them look at least a little more like the 17(anne) and 19(james) that they actually were when they married
I noticed that it was coming up when I was finishing out little hope's platinum and I feel I've gotten pretty good with this era, enough to take creative liberties at any rate, although I completely forgot James didn't have glasses in the original, I think they look good(how did I do 😊)
(close up below as most of the detail is focused on their faces)

First I love every detail I love Anne's hair, I love that little pop of red with Penelope's bow, I love the patterns on both Shirley and Kathy's clothes and Clarence's cowboy sweater(it's funny because this is literally the first picture of him without a beard but who knows if he'll have it by 1959)
I knew as soon as I started thinking of James having siblings that he'd be the middle child so he's doubly middle of three sons and true middle of five, nicely bookended by the sisters
As was likely noticed, Clarence is Hector and Megan's father and Penelope is her mother, making Anne and James be her biological aunt and uncle from both sides of her family
Clarence very much struggles with finding his own footing as the youngest son, especially when his brothers seem so much more established than he is, I agree with everything delurkr wrote tho he's a bit of a struggle to flesh out despite being a sort of kind of canonical character(we still haven't decided on his exact job yet although it's important in his story)
Penelope and Kathy were life long friends and Clarence being close in age tended to be around them a lot, as can be seen in the girls interests there is significant overlap with distinction of taste, where Penelope loves glamour and whimsy, Kathy has more of a morbid curiosity that can be seen at different points in the Clarke family. I believe Katherine Clarke to be her generations spooky girl like Megan would eventually be(exactly what you want growing up in a place like little hope lol), I personally believe Kathy's eventual profession makes sense tho I can't imagine her childhood hobbies would inspire much comfort in that field
Bob is Bob, has the same first name as switchback's Robert, this man is military through and through, only death can stop him and he will eventually lose an eye in war, takes joy in not specifying which war. Undoubtedly has illegitimate children wherever he's been stationed(this is a deliberate family tree decision to make it easier to graft future sukesh models coming from random places that can be worked around Bob rather than slotted into other pre-existing branches if needed), the tallest
Delurkr and I both immediately came to the idea that Shirley would be visibly disabled, for me it was a vague thing and then when they brought in the polio idea I wholeheartedly agreed, at different points in life she had long hair and owlish glasses, certain creative decisions went into how things would work around the next generation, such as only Anne and James being able to take in Megan due to the other siblings not being equipped to take in a child at the time(and as you can imagine the grandparents are beyond done after finally becoming empty nesters and the same goes for a limited ability to assist Anthony after the fire)
A lot of the characterisation surrounding Anne in relation to the group has to do with her being very independent from a young age due to her mother being ill throughout her formative years, as such she feels much more like a peer to Shirley despite the age gap
There's a lot more but this is what I could scrape together at the moment(delurkr can edit this into the post if they like)
again I love every part of this
Anne and James and sibling OCs in 1948

The lore has arrived!
@108garys Clarence was being his usual elusive self when I was both designing his look and writing about him, and at this point a bit of that slipperiness and uncooperativeness is getting built into how I see him in a way 😂 The sweater became obvious to me early on for a particular reason; did you get the little reference?
And btw in case anyone was questioning it, yes I know James didn't have glasses in the 1948 wedding photo. 108garys and I wanted him to have them anyway, and my reasoning is he took them off for the photo because he doesn't like how they look (it's common today to see eyeglasses as a potential asset to someone's appearance, but advertisers were only just starting to try to convince the masses of that in James's era, and I'm saying he didn't like being the kid with glasses before getting over it as he got older). Wire frames like his here were common to make glasses as inconspicuous as possible.
