New York (CNN) -- An author is raising alarms this week after she found new books being sold on Amazon under her name — only she didn’t write them; they appear to have been generated by artificial intelligence.

Jane Friedman, who has authored multiple books and consulted about working in the writing and publishing industry, told CNN that an eagle-eyed reader looking for more of her work bought one of the fake titles on Amazon. The books had titles similar to the subjects she typically writes about, but the text read as if someone had used a generative AI model to imitate her style.

“When I started looking at these books, looking at the opening pages, looking at the bio, it was just obvious to me that it had been mostly, if not entirely, AI-generated … I have so much content available online for free, because I’ve been blogging forever, so it wouldn’t be hard to get an AI to mimic me,” Friedman said.

With AI tools like ChatGPT now able to rapidly and cheaply pump out huge volumes of convincing text, some writers and authors have raised alarms about losing work to the new technology. Others have said they don’t want their work being used to train AI models, which could then be used to imitate them.

“Generative AI is being used to replace writers — taking their work without permission, incorporating those works into the fabric of those AI models and then offering those AI models to the public, to other companies, to use to replace writers,” Mary Rasenberger, CEO of the nonprofit authors advocacy group the Authors Guild, told CNN. “So you can imagine writers are a little upset about that.”

Last month, US lawmakers met with members of creative industries, including the Authors Guild, to discuss the implications of artificial intelligence. In a Senate subcommittee hearing, Rasenberger called for the creation of legislation to protect writers from AI, including rules that would require AI companies to be transparent about how they train their models. More than 10,000 authors — including James Patterson, Roxane Gay and Margaret Atwood — also signed an open letter calling on AI industry leaders like Microsoft and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI to obtain consent from authors when using their work to train AI models, and to compensate them fairly when they do.

A Growing Problem

Friedman on Monday posted a well-read thread on X, formerly known as Twitter, and a blog post about the issue. Several authors responded saying they’d had similar experiences.

“People keep telling me they bought my newest book — that has my name on it but I didn’t write,” one author said in response.

Amazon removed the fake books being sold under Friedman’s name and said its policies prohibit such imitation.

“We have clear content guidelines governing which books can be listed for sale and promptly investigate any book when a concern is raised,” Amazon spokesperson Ashley Vanicek said in a statement, adding that the company accepts author feedback about potential issues. “We invest heavily to provide a trustworthy shopping experience and protect customers and authors from misuse of our service.”

Amazon also told Friedman that it is “investigating what happened with the handling of your claims to drive improvements to our processes,” according to an email viewed by CNN.

The fake books using Friedman’s name were also added to her profile on the literary social network Goodreads, and removed only after she publicized the issue.

“We have clear guidelines on which books are included on Goodreads and will quickly investigate when a concern is raised, removing books when we need to,” Goodreads spokesperson Suzanne Skyvara said in a statement to CNN.

Friedman said she worries that authors will be stuck playing whack-a-mole to identify AI generated fakes.

“What’s frightening is that this can happen to anyone with a name that has reputation, status, demand that someone sees a way to profit off of,” she said.

The Authors Guild has been working with Amazon since this past winter to address the issue of books written by AI, Rasenberger said.

She said the company has been responsive when the Authors Guild flags fake books on behalf of authors, but it can be a tricky issue to spot given that it’s possible for two legitimate authors to have the same name.

The group is also hoping AI companies will agree to allow authors to opt out of having their work used to train AI models — so it’s harder to create copycats — and to find ways to transparently label artificially generated text. And, she said, companies and publishers should continue investing in creative work made by humans, even if AI appears more convenient.

“Using AI to generate content is so easy, it’s so cheap, that I do worry there’s going to be this kind of downward competition to use AI to replace human creators,” she said. “And you will never get the same quality with AI as human creators.”

Despite just graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2020, Ives' reconstructed creations, built from vintage T-shirts, jerseys, and silk scarves, have already proven popular, with Rihanna among his followers. While sustainability is inherent in his creations, he, like many other designers of his age, does not regard it as a selling factor. "I would love [people] to buy the product because they think it's a nice product, and through the process of buying it, realise that it's sustainable and responsible."

It's a sentiment shared by Priya Ahluwalia, who presented her debut runway show in London this fashion month after previously opting to exhibit via film. "I've said from the beginning that sustainability is part of the foundation of the brand, but sometimes I think I don't get my flowers for actually being a designer," she remarked. Nonetheless, the filled benches at Ahluwalia this season, as well as recent collaborations with Ganni and Mulberry, and the debut of her first full womenswear line, demonstrate the designer's rising reach - and, yes, her environmental practises. Continuing to build her business in an environmentally sustainable manner will be a priority in the future. “I want to show that you can be [a] thriving business while also being responsible – that’s my goal,” the designer continues. When Ahluwalia and Ives move into production, acquiring bigger numbers of deadstock fabrics to match their runway or lookbook designs can be difficult. "In our first year, a store wouldn't know what colours they were going to get [for our T-shirt dresses]," says Ives. "We saw that as an advantage - you can know for a fact that this is a one-of-a-kind dress that no one else will have." At the same time, Ahluwalia started Circulate last November in collaboration with Microsoft in an attempt to crowdsource unwanted apparel. "I wanted to create something that will solve an issue within the business [and] encourage people to engage with sustainability," the designer goes on to say. "A future plan would be to figure out how to keep the B2C [business-to-consumer] elements but also open it up as a B2B [business-to-business] platform, so businesses could also submit big batches of [deadstock]."

While collecting antique and deadstock might take time, neither Ives nor Ahluwalia are concerned about running out of pre-existing materials. "If the industry continues at the trajectories that we're going at now, I will never run out of T-shirts," Ives said. But, as Gabriela Hearst pointed out this season, finding high-quality deadstock from mills may be difficult for more known labels, since a rising number of firms follow the practise of using unused materials. "While [using deadstock] is a great disruptor for young [businesses], more established brands have a hard time tapping into enough deadstock or vintage materials," adds Dio Kurazawa, founder of sustainable fashion consultant The Bear Scouts. Although the entire industry is unlikely to convert to deadstock and vintage anytime soon, there is little doubt that young designers are playing a significant part in undermining the established economic paradigm. S.S. Daley, for example, sells recycled "drops" online alongside the brand's core collections, while Ives has elected to exhibit only once a year to enable more time for research and development. Meanwhile, Harris Reed's demi-couture approach demonstrates that exclusivity truly pays. He told British Vogue's fashion critic Anders Christian Madsen about the difference between his model and that of his Central Saint Martins contemporaries who went into ready-to-wear: "They have to get all their orders out… I can acquire what they make from four stores' orders in a pair of pants and boots. That seems really impolite, yet there is an experience there." Whether it’s moving away from virgin materials or embracing the art of slow fashion, these designers are showing how it is possible to build a brand in a sustainable way – and without having to sacrifice on creativity or style. The rest of the industry would do well to take note.

Aluprof Celebrate Success at ICE Awards

Aluprof have attended the ICE Awards held in Dublin for the second year running. A construction highlight of the year for the Emerald Isle. As Gold Sponsor for the Gala Event, Aluprof offered awards in the best ‘Education Project’ and best ’Healthcare Project’ categories.

The awards, founded by the Irish Building Magazine in 1993, are generally known as the ICE Awards and are the original and premier recognition of performance excellence for the contracting sector in Ireland. The Gala Night is always attended by Ireland’s elite construction professionals, where construction leaders, design and supply chain partners, and clients meet and celebrate construction excellence.

Since Aluprof’s emergence onto the UK & Ireland market sixteen years ago offering a well established European portfolio of architectural aluminium systems, meeting and often exceeding the needs of specifiers, Ireland’s specifiers and major facade contractors have welcomed Aluprof as a major systems supplier. Members of TODD Architects, the region's leading architectural practice, were in attendance at the awards ceremony as a guest of the Aluprof UK team. During the evening Aluprof UK awarded winners trophies to best ‘Education Project' for Tyndall Institute of Technology UCC, Phase 1&3, constructed by Summerhill Construction, which was designed by Butler Cammoranesi architects and Scott Tallon Walker Architects respectively for each phase. Second category Aluprof UK presented the awards was for the best ‘Healthcare Project’ and University Hospital Galway Radiation Oncology Centre constructed by John Paul Construction and designed by MCA Architects was the winning project to receive the trophy.

One project winner on the evening in the ‘Commercial €10m to €60m’ category, the Cadenza project at Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin, used Aluprof systems on the ground floor with its stunning façade fabricated and installed by GLF Facades. Architects on the project were Henry J Lyons Architects who designed the building for client Irish Life.

Among the many other projects that have been completed in the Republic of Ireland, the headquarters of Microsoft, Twitter and Google, all play special roles as large-scale office buildings that demand high-quality specifications in building components.
