Part 3: Build-a-booth

 Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed*, the three of us (FallingMist, Mythee, and WindPower) trundled our load of prints and tabletop appliances to the Palais des Congrès de Montreal the day before the convention would begin.
*We were actually all relatively exhausted from processing our wares past 1 am the previous night, but excited nonetheless.
This trip wasn’t just to set up our booth. We had paid to have our badges mailed home, but apparently you still have to go in line to pick up the required artist ribbon, so it had been a false convenience in our case. Alas...

Once inside the centre, we made our way to the Artist’s badge lineup. The wait felt long, but it was probably about an hour!

We used that time to cut more individual stickers out from the sheets we had ordered. I wanted every corner rounded because the sticker vinyl and paper was tough enough that I worried someone might cut or stab themselves while handling them!

After picking up the Artist Ribbon, we could head in! They also gave us the loot bags you typically get at anime conventions, so we began to check out the events available.

It looked like in our haste to fill the form, we hadn’t realized that the main artist name you sign up as is your only chance to represent both artists at the booth on the sign and on the official Artist Alley map. No matter, we would craft our own signs to affix to the front of the booth.

Since this was our first time setting up in the artist alley, we didn’t spend much on setup. Other artists had warned us that first timers rarely break even, so we only used what was lying around our home, with the help of lots of tape, cardboard, curtain rods, and two DVD trays from a thrift store. In total, our setup costs were <10$ compared to the no doubt >100$ some artists spend on fancy displays.
Mind you, those displays are nicer to look at and faster to set up. If we ever do this again, we’re definitely going to think of something better than this year’s budget architectural feat.

Who knew discarded micropipette tip holders could be so useful? Wind accomplished many feats by using them.

Petri dishes are easy to open, easy to close, easy to stack see-through storage, and they were especially helpful as sticker organizers.

It was finally time to put up some posters! We were eager to see them in full display.

Uh oh. Something was wrong. While booths in the aisles were brightly lit, our own end-position display was cast in shadow, with no lighting coming from the front. This made the prints- which had already come out darker than we had expected at the Costco Photo Centre- even more difficult to see.

We hoped our proximity to the door would nevertheless balance out this disadvantage, but it was the furthest door of the room from incoming foot traffic and those who make their way there were usually on their way out of, not into, the artist alley.

On the first day, we had not put the Lilies Anthology volumes out on the table, but we quickly learned that relying on the open volume to the right of the table for attention was a bad idea. Things laying horizontally toward the front of the table were not only better lit, they gathered much more attention than the things hanging up above us! (The bookmarks I had set out to the front for 25 cents each were definitely quick to disappear.)

Something that earned us a lot more customers was the presence of a little piece of hardware called the Square Reader. It allowed us to take credit card payments (but not debit). It can be obtained for free online by just about anyone, I think. I didn’t even have to pay for shipping!

This spotlight, however! On the third day, Wind tried to affix his battery powered light above some posters. Sales definitely increased on the posters that were lit up!

(2)Disassemble the micropipette by removing the tip, and then remove the plunger mechanism and shaft from the body of the pipette.
(3)Clean the exterior of the micropipette body with a damp cloth or a cotton swab soaked in a mild detergent solution. Be careful not to get any liquid inside the micropipette.
