Apple Watch Ultra with MicroLED Display Delayed to 2025

Apple is developing a new version of its flagship smartwatch, the Apple Watch Ultra, with a microLED display. Display analyst Ross Young reports that the Cupertino-based company may release the product in the second half of 2025, later than earlier predictions of a 2024 launch. Although Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had earlier speculated that the device could be launched by the end of 2024, Young's recent report suggests that the release window has been pushed back.

Advantages of MicroLED over OLED

MicroLED is a display technology that uses tiny, self-emitting pixels. It is known to offer better contrast, higher brightness, and a longer lifespan than OLED displays. MicroLEDs can be made in smaller sizes, making them ideal for wearable devices like smartwatches. While OLED displays are currently being used in Apple Watches, switching to a microLED display would provide the premium smartwatch with an edge over its competitors.

Apple to Transition from OLED to MicroLED

Gurman had previously reported that Apple is expected to shift to micro-LED technology from OLED in its iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices, beginning in 2024. This move is expected to start with the iPhone lineup and be followed by iPad and Mac units.

Samsung Also Exploring MicroLED for Smartwatches

Samsung, the South Korean electronics giant, is also considering incorporating microLED displays in upcoming wearables in the Galaxy series. Reports suggest that the company has formed a team to work on bringing microLED displays to the market in Galaxy smartwatches. Currently, Samsung's Galaxy smartwatches feature OLED displays.

MicroLED Display and its Cost Implications

While microLED technology is capable of delivering superior performance than OLED displays, it is currently more expensive to produce. However, with increasing demand for high-end, high-performance wearable devices, the cost of producing microLEDs could reduce, making it more accessible to the mass market. Read the full article
