Today's polish was inspired by Everything Everywhere All at Once. According to the maker, it has a "scarlet base with a violet red orange microflake shimmer." And in the bottle it definitely has a red lean to it. But on the nails? It is a bright, almost neon magenta. I ended up loving this, even though it wasn't quite what I had expected. This is Hot Dog Fingers from Swamp Gloss.

A 19th century engraving depicts Spanish exploration in the West Indies. ‘It’s up to us to tell their story,’ researchers say of the Caribs. Photograph: Granger/Rex/Shutterstock
For centuries, historians held that the Caribbean’s earliest inhabitants were peaceful farmers who were wiped out by the ferocious man-eating Carib people. But archaeologists in Antigua say new evidence from one of the most important sites in the region is helping to correct “speculative and erroneous” accounts passed down from early colonists.
The excavation at a 12-acre site in Indian Creek has prompted a reassessment of older narratives, said Dr Reg Murphy, who is leading a team from Syracuse University, Farmingdale State College and Brooklyn College.
Colonial-era historians said that the Arawak people were exterminated in about 1300 AD by the Caribs, who were demonised as man-eaters – and then themselves displaced – by the first European settlers .
Tumblr media
A 19th century wood engraving. Photograph: Granger/Rex/Shutterstock
“We hope to reevaluate those long-held assumptions,” said Murphy. “From analysing their diet we have found no evidence that Caribs ever ate humans.”
The site is one of few known to have supported every age of mankind from the Arawaks to the present day.
“We think Amerindians migrated up the smaller islands like Antigua, then separated out when they reached bigger islands like Puerto Rico,” he said. “But was there one culture or a multitude of cultures? That’s one of the questions we hope to answer.”
The area closest to the rugged road linking Indian Creek to the tourist hub of English Harbour reveals scattered fragments of Wedgwood and Delftware china from 18th-century colonists. Further into the thorny thickets, these are replaced by much older remains of clay serving bowls and flint tools.
“You can often tell the function by looking at the form,” Murphy said, picking up a blue-coloured scrap. “This has a folded rim, indicating the period from around 200BC to 600AD, and this might have been a griddle for making cassava bread.”
The former cotton fields of Indian Creek were first excavated by a team from Yale University in the 1960s, but since then, technology has evolved greatly to include methods like aerial imaging, electronic surveying and electron microscopes.
“The Yale study looked at pottery and charcoal to determine the era and the migration sequence only,” Murphy said. “Ours is much more intensive: we are scrutinising tiny bones, pollen and microflakes. We’re interested in food remains, the people themselves, their craftsmanship, their health.”
Once so ruinous for colonial-era sugar cultivation, the site’s barren, infertile environment has become archaeologists’ boon.
“The land was so hostile it wasn’t used for sugar for long. They never used any big ploughs, so it’s still largely intact,” said Murphy.
Tumblr media

A lingering mystery is why – despite the harsh terrain – traditionally migratory Amerindians stayed living at the site for almost 2,000 years.
“The site is a long way from the waterfront and the marine resources on which they were completely dependent,” said Murphy. “We don’t know what was so special about here, or how they could have survived in this scrubby area.”
Still, much can be gleaned about their day-to-day existence by scrutinising microscopic scratches on excavated tools. Residues of foods such as fish and corn have also contributed valuable information about Amerindians’ diet.
It is the Caribs who are of particular interest to Murphy’s assistant Carlyn Valmond, who is of Carib – or “Kalinago” – descent herself.
Tumblr media
Researchers show some of the items excavated. Photograph: Gemma Handy
“I started studying the Caribs because I couldn’t believe the history I was reading,” she said. “We have learned that far from being cannibals, they largely lived on shell animals and fish.”
The image of the Caribs as savage cannibals is entirely based on colonial accounts, said Murphy. “We know nothing about them except what the Europeans told us – and they had their own agenda,” he said.
“We, as descendants of slavery, have only been in Antigua since the 1630s, but there were people here for thousands of years before us – people who have no voice. It’s up to us to tell their story.”

A critique of the claimed 36,000 year old mammoth bones claiming human intervention from the great Al Dart
Article Review: “Human Occupation of the North American Colorado Plateau ∼37,000 Years Ago” by Timothy B. Rowe, Thomas W. Stafford Jr., Daniel C. Fisher, Jan J. Enghild, J. Michael Quigg, Richard A. Ketcham, J. Chris Sagebiel, Romy Hanna, and Matthew W. Colbert (2022, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution 10:903795. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fevo.2022.903795/full); and Supplementary Material at https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fevo.2022.903795/full#supplementary-material. Reviewed by Allen Dart, RPA, Old Pueblo Archaeology Center, Tucson This article describes the Hartley mammoth locality in north-central New Mexico’s Rio Puerco Canyon, dated to 38,900-36,250 cal BP by AMS 14C analysis of hydroxyproline from bone collagen. In addition to remains of a young-adult female mammoth and a young mammoth calf, the site contained possible evidence of burning, six flaked stone artifacts, some possible cobble and boulder artifacts, some bone microflakes that the authors interpret as artifacts, and . The authors propose that taphonomic evidence suggests two mammoths were butchered using expedient lithic and bone technology, and that controlled (domestic) fire was involved. The evidence of burning is minimal. Wet-screening some of the excavation matrix through 0.5-mm mesh recovered microparticles including siliceous aggregates, subspherical complex aggregates of recrystallized ash, pulverized bone fragments, angular shattered tooth and bone fragments, vitrified plant fragments, and charcoal fragments, which the authors contend resemble particles excavated from Old World hearths. However, no discrete evidence of hearths was identified in the excavation. Six microflakes of Pedernal chert, a rock type common in the vicinity, were recovered. The description of the flakes and a photo of one of them make a strong case that the flakes are artifacts. The authors also note in the main bone assemblage “numerous locally derived rounded sandstone cobbles weighing up to 3 kg. In the midst of the pile, lying on top of four broken ribs, was a 23.7 kg boulder interpreted as a hammerstone and/or anvil.” The authors interpret 32 recovered bone microflakes as artifact fragments preserving technical attributes associated with percussive forces and patterning they say geological processes or scavenging cannot explain. Twenty-two of the bone flakes are from thickly cortical limb bones, seven are from ribs, and three are from a dentary. Fifteen of the flakes have sharp edges suitable for cutting. Eleven flakes are interpreted as having been struck parallel to the bone grain, 16 as struck perpendicular to the grain, and only five are of uncertain strike direction. The authors state that such “systematic attention to grain during bone reduction is unknown in noncultural bone assemblages, including scavenged assemblages.” They also observe that many of the bone flakes bear one or more secondary impact scars “exhibiting preferential orientations to the grain of their parent flake . . . .  In all, 84% of the secondary scars were struck either perpendicular or parallel to the grain of their parent flakes.” They conclude this indicates statistically significant patterned, systematic bone selection and reduction organized around grain and percussion-fracture behavior. I think skepticism is called for in interpreting whether the Hartley mammoth site is an archaeological (cultural) site as opposed to just a paleontological one, and whether the site is approximately 37,000 years old, for at least these reasons: • In their supplementary data pdf file, the authors say “The presence of several small chert microflakes in the matrix surrounding the main bone assemblage may be an independent line of evidence for the cultural origin of this site (Fig. 13). However, the possibility that these are surface contaminants introduced by burrowing organisms cannot be rejected.” • In the supplementary data pdf file it is stated that the geological context of the mammoth bones is in “sediments deposited on a ‘Toreva block’ landslide . . . .   As the canyon walls receded, Toreva blocks commonly formed sequential landslides that now form distinct ridges and troughs parallel to the main escarpment. The troughs often form local catchments for sediment washed from the adjacent ridges and from the main escarpment.” The landslide context raises a question as to the integrity of the deposit. • In the supplementary data pdf file Rowe et al. say none of the cobbles or the boulder intermingled with the bones preserves obvious impact marks or features that differentiate them from other local cobbles and rock debris that was produced by the sequential Toreva block landslides forming the larger geological context of the site. They suggest the 23.7 kg (52 lb.) boulder might have been used as a hammerstone to break open the animal’s skull, but I’d suggest that if this rock was handled by humans, its position atop broken mammoth ribs could suggest it was thrown on an already-downed mammoth to help finish it off, or onto discarded mammoth remains. • If this was a butchered mammoth, why the paucity of flaked stone artifacts? In the Jarosa, NM, 7.5’ topographic quadrangle that includes Rio Puerco Canyon where the mammoth was found, Pedernal Chert is “pervasive” (Timmer et al. 2006). Also, artifacts made of Pedernal Chert had wide distribution and have been found hundreds of miles from the source, and the region around Rio Puerco Canyon has abundant other lithic resources including other kinds of chert, chalcedony, basalt, and some obsidian (Warren 1974). • The authors cite John W. Fisher (1995) for their statement “we restrict the term ‘flake’ to bone fragments preserving technical attributes associated with percussive forces.” However, one of the attributes on bone that Fisher mentions as a percussive force is conchoidal flake scars, “which can be produced by hammerstone-wielding humans intent on extracting bone marrow” (Fisher 1995:9, citing several other sources). The authors do not indicate whether any conchoidal flake scars were found on any of the mammoth bones other than the bone microflakes. • The authors interpret some of the bone specimens as artifacts based on breakage patterns that are similar to patterns seen on flaked stone artifacts, and in their supplemental data file they identify conchoidal and hinged fractures on some of the supposed bone artifacts. But have any replicative studies shown that bones break in the same way as stone materials, and/or that the breakage patterns on bones that are similar to those on flaked stone could only have been the result of human-caused direct percussion? • If some of the flake scars on the animal bones interpreted as artifacts were created by human-caused percussive force, what kind of tool(s) would have been used to create the flake scars? Other bones? The sandstone cobbles on which no evidence was found of damage or use-wear to suggest they were hammerstones? • In the supplementary information pdf file, Rowe et al. indicate that the stratum containing the mammoth bones dates to the late Pleistocene epoch but do not mention whether the actual context was more finely datable by geological-stratigraphic means. The six flaked stone artifacts recovered are not stylistically datable. Therefore, dating of the discovery relies on radiocarbon analyses of six samples of collagen extracted from some of the mammoth bones. The authors noted that C14 sample no. 9067 yielded 2.6wt% of collagen (compared to 23wt% for modern bone) but do not list the collagen wt% for any of the other five analyzed samples. The 2.6wt% is pretty low for C14 dating reliability. The Oxford radiocarbon lab uses a cut-off point of 1% bone collagen to alert attention to marginal cases that might or might not be suitable for analysis and recommends that a range from 2 to 0.5wt% collagen should be checked for further indications of sample integrity breakdown (von Klinken (1999); and Ambrose (1990) found that carbon concentrations are relatively constant for collagen concentrations greater than 6% but decrease abruptly below the 3.5% threshold. These values raise questions in my mind about the integrity of the carbon in the bones selected for the Hartley mammoth collagen dates. References cited Ambrose, S. The Grand Admiral - Moonflower Polish - Villains PPU October
~press sample~
Hey everyone! Today I have the awesome honor of bringing you this gorgeous stamping polish for the villains inspiration for Polish Pickup. Yes, that's right - STAMPING polish. This beauty is from Moonflower Polish, made by the lovely Nadia, and is called “The Grand Admiral.”
Tumblr media
Now, I know Star Wars isn't everyone's cup of tea, and probably not now that Disney has, ahem, done her wrong, but back in the day, there were some amazing works associated with the Star Wars lore and canon. This polish is inspired by one of the characters to come from the extended universe of the books, the Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Empire. Unfortunately, we all know Disney retconned this universe, dubbing them “Legends” and destroying everything we fans came to know and love, but amazingly, Thrawn was revived from his demise by being reintroduced into the official canon cartoons!
Tumblr media
I'm not huge on the books anymore, I read them years ago during school, so I only vaguely remember Thrawn myself. Nadia obviously has a much better memory and love for them; “My love of sci-fi really became an obsession when I read the Heir to the Empire Trilogy (also known as the Thrawn Trilogy) by Timothy Zahn as a pre-teen. I consider them to be necessary reading for any Star Wars fan. Thrawn is a humanoid alien in the Star Wars Universe, one of the few to rise the ranks in the Empire. He's described as having blue skin with red eyes and black hair, and is known for his brilliant strategic mind and ruthlessness. My polish is inspired by his appearance and uniform.”
Thrawn is a Chiss - and so The Grand Admiral is a bright cerulean blue with red shimmer, red-pink-gold aurora pigment, and gold, gunmetal, and red microflakes, with scattered holo. This polish is versatile, and can be worn as regular polish, or of course, stamped. It dries semi-matte, apply shiny topcoat to enhance shimmers, or use a matte topcoat to enhance the microflakes. I've done both, to show the difference the top coat makes!!
This beauty will only be available during the Villains Polish Pickup, October 5th through 8th. It'll be available for $13.50 in a full size 15 ml bottle only, and there's a cap of 75, so make sure you grab yours!!

Today's polish was apparently inspired by the Gilmore Girls, which is a show I've never watched. So feel free to tell me how well you think the polish fits the inspiration. I was surprised to learn that the base for this polish is clear and it is packed lavender microflakes, a pink/gold/green shimmer and holo flakes. It had a really great formula and was super twinkly in the sun. This is Put Sugar on Your Toes from Night Owl Lacquer.
