Nothing Gold Can Stay
Cw: Death is mentioned ALOT like this is the main theme of it
Before we start I give a date and it’s kinda odd since the musical it says it takes place in 67 but I’ve heard that the events take place in 65 so I’m going with that! I also am sorry for advance if this is written weird 😭🙏 I did this in SCHOOL.
After Johnny and Dally die, things are odd for a bit; everyone’s a little bit closer and a bit more protective till the grief dies down (but never fully goes away). Pony finishes “The Outsiders” and gives it to his English teacher, who then helps/pushes him to publish it, and everything starts to look up for the gang of Greasers.
Then in 1967 the worst thing happened: just a bit before Soda's 19th birthday, he got drafted. Steve almost immediately enlisted but told everyone he was drafted too. The following year, Soda died from a bomb that went off, got mostly his arm and leg, but he bled out while Steve held him, unable to get him back to med in time. The year after that, Steve got shot and killed. Everyone said after Soda passed, Steve became reckless and reminded Pony of Dally and Johnny a painful amount.
Everything goes back into routine; sometimes it’s almost like the gang never existed, that it was always just a very distant trio. As Pony grew up, he eventually became older than his best friend, older than his brother, older than they’ll ever be. He started to forget more about them; they weren’t on his mind every second. He didn’t see them in everything; they became a background thought. He’d only remember every now and then.
Pony managed to publish The Outsiders, and it got popular quick, changing the way a lot of people in Tulsa saw them, and whenever Pony would see any of the gang members names or the “stay gold” quote, it made everything feel a bit better, like this was the way things were supposed to be.
Then in 1988 they lose another member, Darrel; he dies in a work accident. Pony and Soda used to joke that work would kill Darry one day, and if only they knew how true that’d end up being, maybe they wouldn’t have joked about it so much. Darry was 43 when he died, and Pony was 37. It hit Pony like a truck; suddenly he was 14 again, crying and not eating. Suddenly it felt like he was 17, grieving Soda once more, but this was different; this was his LAST family member.
Pony then contacted Two-Bit for the first time in years. He was 41 and as sharp-witted as ever, still drinking and still in love with Mickey Mouse, and they started spending time together again, and it was like they were teens again, having playful banter around their Curtis brothers house while Two-Bit and Steve shoved cake in their mouths, and it helped Pony manage his grief better this time.
But like everything else in Pony’s life, nothing stays. Two-bit eventually dies from liver failure in 1999. Longer, anyone thought his drinking would let him live since he made it to 52, and he died alone in his house with Mickey on the TV and a slice of cake on the end table. Pony found it poetic that the loudest of them was the only one to die alone. Johnny had Dally and Pony; Dally had the gang; Soda had Steve; Steve had the other soldiers; and Darry had his work crew around him.
Pony focuses on himself and his family after this. He watches his kids grow, and they watch his brown hair turn grey slowly yet surely. Eventually, after a while, Pony starts to tune into Mickey; every day on the hour, he’d ask for chocolate cake every now and then, and he’d put grease in his hair. He’d go and watch rodeos, and he’d re-read Gone With The Wind over and over again.
One day his kids come to visit him; it’s 2021, he’s coming close to his 70th birthday, and his kids have the intent to show him the impact his book has on newer generations, making people feel like they belong, but when they get to the nursing home, Pony’s sitting on a very old recliner, Darry’s old one that he saved for when he got this old; he’s watching Mickey and turns to his kids, an almost childlike smile on his face; he tells them the gang should be here soon and to come sit, but when Mickey finishes, Pony’s already gone, that faint smile still on his face.
The gang is finally whole again, and they have no intention of leaving each other ever again.

It had been the best day ever, but it wasn’t over yet.
You’d been that kid in school. The one who’s parents took them to Disney every summer, the one who was forever obsessed with all the movies and princesses and getting all dressed up to go meet Mickey Mouse the first day in the parks.
Your sweet midwestern boyfriend had never been, and you were determined to make it the best week of his life, planning adventure after adventure and the grand finale would be to spend the day at Galaxy’s Edge doing all the Star Wars themed things until his little nerd heart was good and content.
You woke him up that morning in space buns and a Princess Leia t-shirt, holding up the matching Han Solo one and bouncing on your toes as you excitedly rush him to get ready, promises for this to be the best day spilling from your mouth between kisses.
You’d taken him on every ride at least twice, loving the sparkle in his bright blue eyes as he takes it all in, and oh the character meet ups had been even better! Watching your tall, broad man be dwarfed by Chewbacca was hilarious, and when he’d gotten to see the Mandalorian it was the little giggle he let out at Grogu that had your heart absolutely melting.
You’d been waiting all day for his big surprise, and as you led him to the building marked Savi’s workshop he gasped when he realized what you had planned. “Wait- are we really?” He said with a toothy grin and you giggled at how childlike he looked in this moment. “We absolutely are, only the best for my man. Let’s go build you a lightsaber baby.”
He was over the moon, he’d loved every bit of this vacation but really today had taken the cake. He posed for pictures with stormtroopers in front of the Millennium Falcon and his new lightsaber while you grinned from ear to ear, and he knew for sure you were absolutely it for him. So when he pulled you in to take some pictures with him he distracted you with a kiss as he pulled the pretty ring from his pocket and then bent down to ask you to be his. You’d said it would be the best day ever for him but maybe it could be the best day for you both, tears welling up in your eyes as you squealed an enthusiastic yes while the crowd around you erupted in cheers and applause.
Later that night in your fancy suite at the Grand Floridian, your handsome Jedi laid you out on the gorgeous king size bed and took you apart with his hands and mouth before he finally sunk into you as he whispered the sweetest words that had your chest swelling with love and pride. Cradled in his arms in the early morning hours he sighed into the crook of your neck “I love you” and you just couldn’t help but reply “I know” with a grin.
It really had been the best day ever.

Cookie Mickey
021/365 #hunt the mouse
so this is a bit of a more involved one. This was a suggestion by @maryjanesenthusiastenjoyerlover who has been talking about certain aspects of the mickey designs. their message is pretty long, had to clip it
so some notes- their gloves can be technically seen as white in this as its sort of cast in shadow to not make it look white and also caked in frosting. i also wanted to include fibo, from the cookie carnival short that disney accidentally let lapse into public domain. hes not a major character or anything but i thought it was fitting.
I am making 365 new versions of Mickey Mouse for the public domain and releasing them under public domain all year long.
You can join the initiative to #hunt the mouse or suggest a theme yourself via my ask box.

I’m not the first to suggest this, but now that both Oswald and Mickey are public domain, once the low-budget cash-ins get out of the way somebody should make the horror Epic Mickey of our dreams… Now, I’m fully aware that the infamous concept art showing a darker tone was never intended to be made into the final product, it was just to test what Disney would or wouldn’t accept, but it’s still cool, and now people don’t have to be beholden to them to a certain extent.
Of course, you couldn’t make anything created for Epic Mickey for profit specifically, but you could definitely make something similar and it would be more like a parody. Here are my list of ideas and things to consider:
Instead of a magical realm called Wasteland created by a wizard that is separate from the “real” world, let’s say that this setting that I’ll call “Junkland” is Oswald’s failed, desolate knockoff of the Disney parks filled with his own versions of the public domain fairy tale and book characters that Disney has used like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, etc.
The tone would be horror, but relatively child-appropriate, and not too edgy, mixed with satire about Disney, corporations, animation history, and so on.
“Junkland” could be separated into two main areas, the theme parks where the fairy tale/book characters live, and “E.P.C.O.Y.” AKA the Experimental Prototype Community Of Yesterday, Oswald’s pet project that he left the theme parks for, only EPCOY is an accidental totalitarian dystopia filled with animatronic citizens.
If one were to include Ortensia, you would either have to use her original name Sadie or come up with something else.
The monsters could either be only animatronics, or there could also be ink monsters, but they couldn’t be called Blots.
If ink monsters were included, perhaps there could be a monster version of Oswald that represents his frustrations and jealousy and who REALLY hates Mickey. Remember the whole KILL THE MOUSE AND TAKE HIS HOUSE thing that was a bit of a meme before Epic Mickey came out? You could have your cake and eat it too by having a monstrous Oswald, but also having the real Oswald have to recognize and deal with the negativity inside of him.

For the WIP ask game--any snippet for Wild Wednesday?
I have one more part I’d like to write and then an idea for a little epilogue that I’m kicking my feet over.
So here’s a snippet from the epilogue (The twins’ birthday party)
“So what’s the theme?”
He laughs, “oh you’ve got to hear this.”
She raises an eyebrow.
“You know how they went through that windmill phase? And before that is was fish?”
She bites back a smile. How could she forget?
“Well I guess Baria has channel 4 on in the morning and now they’re fixated on Finnick Odair.”
“So, like, the weather?”
“No. Like the man himself. Since they don’t watch cartoons, so he’s their Mickey Mouse.”
They both dissolve into laugher.
After a moment Peeta continues, “they’re dead set on it. Rye’s been trying to talk them into a generic weather themed party, but they couldn’t care less. I have to figure out how to put his face on the cake.”
She snorts, “So will he be attending?”
“Who? Odair? No. I doubt he makes appearances for toddler birthday parties.”
“I’m surprised Baria hasn’t convinced him otherwise.”
“Even she has her limits.” He whips around to face her, pointing a finger in her direction, “Don’t tell her I said that.”
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m very enthusiastic about Weatherman Finnick.
Thank you for playing the WIP ask game!!

Idk why but since Minako is based of Mickey Mouse, at least mostly Mickey Mouse. Deuce and Ace are literally just Donald Duck and Goofy just more chaotic in their shenanigans 😂
Omg, I've never thought about that. As a big fan of the modern Mickey Mouse shorts and The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, I like to think that Minako, Adeuce, and Grim get into the same levels of chaos.
Ace, Minako, and Grim would try to make a legitimate potato theme park for Deuce. Ace and Deuce trying to surprise Minako and Grim for their birthday by making a large birthday cake, but Idia's latest ended up making a kaiju-sized horror out of the cake with Indiana Jones like obstacles. Then there's Minako chasing Deuce all over the campus when he's sleepwalking or more like sleep-marathoning.
Yeah, all of that happened in the Mickey Mouse shorts

Memories
Lately, I’ve been feeling super nostalgic. I found this old hard drive with golden videos that hit me like a time machine. And let me tell you—being a child? Peak life. Zero career stress, no peer pressure, no assignment deadlines. Kya pata tha yaar ki adulthood sirf thodi responsibility aur kaafi struggle ka dusra naam hai? Nobody tells you as a kid that adulthood isn’t just about “freedom”—it’s about figuring out your taxes, crying over Excel sheets, and pretending you’re okay when you’re not. If I had even an inkling back then that growing up meant juggling responsibilities and feeling ‘tired’ as a personality trait, I would’ve sat my 6-year-old self down and said, “Beta, soch le. Bade nahi hona.” Had I known, I would’ve voted to stay smol forever.
We used to live life aaj mein, getting pampered without guilt. No one judged you, society wasn’t on your back, and your existence wasn’t a topic of someone’s tea-time gossip. The biggest question of the day was, “Aaj kiske ghar khelne jaayein?” The fun was real, yaar—no pressure of being cool, looking perfect, or having an “aesthetic” life for Instagram. No one cared what you looked like, what you owned, or if your life was “cool enough” for social media.
And childhood birthday parties? Oh my god, what a vibe. Forget five-star venues and Instagrammable decorations—our parties were elite in the most basic way. Menu? Pastry, chips, burger, and a bottle of Fanta. That’s it. No talk of themes or aesthetics, no stress about cake designs that “align with the mood board.” Cake has to be a whole masterpiece—it’s all about Taylor Swift-themed fondant figures, Pinterest themes, and hashtags like #BirthdayVibes. But back then? Our parents showed up with their favorite cake (not yours), usually topped with some random cartoon—Mickey Mouse, Shinchan, or even a slightly questionable, squished animal. And you know what? No one cared. As long as it was tasty, we were living our best lives. Kids these days are unwrapping iPhones or driving home in Mini Coopers on their birthdays. MINI COOPERS, bhai! Back then, if someone even gave us a Barbie doll or a Hot Wheels car? Peak happiness.
Your four closest friends would show up in their most mismatched outfits (no one cared about ‘fits back then), a birthday cap would crown you as king/queen for the day, and together, you’d create absolute chaos. The photos? Legendary. Unhinged poses with missing teeth and blurry smiles—zero effort, pure joy. And the games! Musical chairs? Top-tier entertainment. You’d push your bestie off a chair and call it strategy. Dance Statue? Standing frozen in the weirdest positions, trying not to giggle. Sounds cliché now? Maybe. But back then? We were LIVING. Today, people might roll their eyes and say, “Boring parties,” but those were real vibes. You didn’t need fancy decorations or iPhones as return gifts to prove your birthday was lit. Happiness didn’t need validation back then.
School wasn’t just a place where you “learned stuff.” It was a comedy show, therapy session, and adventure all rolled into one. Bus rides were mini concerts where window seats were prime property, and someone always screamed songs off-beat because “feel aayi toh aayi.” The classroom? Pure, unfiltered fun. We laughed at jokes that didn’t make sense, whispered gossip like it was breaking news, and passed notes with cringe-level secrets. No one cared about looking cool or being perfect. Competition? Barely existed. Sure, we announced big dreams with full confidence—“Doctor banunga!”, “Engineer toh pakka.” or "I'll be an astronaut!" We said it without knowing that today’s doctors would be prepping with ChatGPT, and engineers would be staring at error messages at 3 AM with tears in their eyes. Because let’s be real, hum bachpan mein chand-sitaro ke piche hi bhagte the. As kids, we wanted to fly, chase the moon and stars, and explore space. Little did we know that to become an astronaut, you gotta deal with Rosenmund reactions in 12th-grade Science and survive the never-ending physics equations—like, who signed up for that? Becoming a rocket scientist, a doctor or even an engineer felt dreamy back then—now, it feels like a marathon of study guides. Cheating? It’s evolved into a science now. Back then, we copied from our best friend’s paper and still had the audacity to fail together. Iconic teamwork. I did not knew that life apne haathon mein hai would literally mean staring at your phone to check your bank account balance or count your daily steps and let an app decide whether if you are healthy or not? Lol, we didn’t!
And reunions? LOL, kya reunion? A few days back, we tried planning one—group chat was buzzing, enthusiasm was sky-high. “Chal bro, ek baar toh milte hain!” The plan started with dates, places, excitement, and… it fizzled out. Why? Because everyone’s busy. Legit, no one’s ever free at the same time. It’s wild how we went from “Bro, aaj tu free hai kya?” to “Let me check my schedule and get back to you.” Life has us running around so much that we’ve forgotten how to pause.
Sometimes I wonder—time kitna jaldi nikal gaya, yaar. One moment, we were kids in messy uniforms, laughing uncontrollably, living life without filters. The next, we’re adults, scrolling through old photos and grainy videos, trying to feel those moments again. I swear, if someone handed me a time machine, I’d run back. Back to that classroom where I sat with my best friend, whispering nonsense and getting scolded. Back to awkward, blurry photos and “shh-ing” each other in the library because everything was suddenly hilarious. Back to those “small rebellions” that felt wild but were actually just innocent fun. Because now? Everything is a memory. Those carefree days are locked in badly shot videos and weird poses, frozen in time. I miss those days. I miss my friends—my ride-or-dies who didn’t care what I wore, or how I looked. I miss the simplicity of childhood when happiness was a pastry, a round of Musical Chairs, or an extra hour of playtime before sunset.
Growing up? Overrated. If I could trade adulting for even one day of childhood, I would do it in a heartbeat. No filters, no judging—just the raw, unfiltered joy of being me.
Signing off for now—nostalgic, emotional, and still praying for a time machine.

Awake Chapter 163 Party Planning
AO3
“Alice, I need your help.” Bella tells her a week later. She is over to keep on eye on Bella and the children while Jacob is at work.
“With what?”
“The boys birthday is in a month and I need help planning their party.”
“You are speaking my language,” She responds with excitement. There is nothing she likes better than party planning and shopping, “do you have a theme?” at her blank look, “ a theme. What are they into?”
“Mickey Mouse. They adore him.”
“I can work with that. How many people are coming?”
“Well, the pack, you guys, our parents including Mom and Phil, and some friends from church. Around 40.”
Alice looks around the living room where they currently sit and then back at Bella.
“That is a lot. Are you planning on it here or our house?”
“Yours will be better, I think.”
“Okay, ours it is. Are we doing this on our actual birthday or another day?”
“As their birthday is on Saturday, the actual date.”
“Party for forty , with children, our house, February 5th, Mickey Mouse theme.”
“Right. Thanks Alice. With everything else, I didn’t even know where to begin.”
“You came to the right place.”
They sit and discuss cakes, decorations, party games, until the boys get up from their nap. Bella feels better that it is now in Alice ‘s capable hands.

When it comes to the overall time for the party, timing plays a crucial role. If it’s a kid’s party, then a late morning or early afternoon is a great choice. On the other hand, adults may have a birthday party in the evening hours. Setting a date and time first will be a good way to start. It will help plan all of the other parts of the party.
2. Choose a Birthday Party Theme (Mickey Mouse, Rainbow, or etc..)
Having a birthday party with decorations and specific attire creates an inviting atmosphere for guests. Having a theme at your party makes it more fun and engaging for everyone involved to participate and engage.
3. Decide on the Spending Budget
The next thing you should think about is how much money you want to spend on the party. It’s entirely up to you whether you want a big budget or a small one. This all depends on what kind of activities you want at the party and what sort of food & drink options you’re considering for your party event. To make sure you have enough money to cover all the cost. This will help you figure out how much money you need. Remember to think about all the costs, including any extra fees that might come up.
4. Create a List of Food and Drinks for the Party
When it comes to party planning especially a birthday party, you must decide whether you will handle the food and drinks yourself or hire a catering company. With all of the tasks involved in planning any event, outsourcing certain areas can bring much-needed relief and peace of mind. Renting concessions such as a cotton candy machine can be a great way to add excitement and variety to any birthday party. 2/26/24 "Phoenix" JPT3702
A general pattern I've noticed across Tezuka's works is the idea of a minor societal/personal flaw which is then blown up into being the crux of his story's conflict, which is very much something I enjoy! Tezuka's Phoenix is another example of these same storytelling devices, following the lives of several individuals who seek out feathers from the illusive phoenix, several of whom are tasked to retrieve it for the sake of an empress (Queen Himiko) concerned about her looks...!
What does that say about Queen Himiko? As illustrated by the book, Himiko is obsessed with her appearance. She constantly cries about how she is getting older and her wrinkles are showing more, leading her to behave more erratically in order to gain a sense of control. As a result, she orders several generals and those under her army's command to retrieve the phoenix's feathers, in so invading the country of Kumaso.
While on a small scale, this does say that looks are something pathetic to obsess over, it also teaches the important lesson in that you must keep small matters small. Queen Himiko has an insecurity which ends up being the reason for invading and slaughtering another country, which is completely blown out of proportion! In the past, we have seen kings kill their subjects because they looked at them weird, and even now, we can see the invasion of countries for... oil! Tezuka's manga takes a peaceful protest against these matters by displaying how ridiculous Queen Himiko's (and by extention, other's) actions are.
This manga also tackles the individuality complex, which queen Himiko definitely has, and her brother's keen ability to take over the country from within using her insecurity for his own gain. This is likely a lesson to readers to not allow themselves to think they're more special than anybody else, and to not let your insecurities control you. I assume that as a physician who has gone through training, Tezuka must have felt the need at one point or another to conform with his fellow doctors and employees. Perhaps Himiko's brother is a metaphor for society's demands to be "normal"? This would explain why Himiko cracked under pressure so easily from her looks alone.
Another point I want to touch on was the spy, and his invasion of Kumaso. I found it interesting that after everything he did to his wife's village, he ended up simultaneously saving her from the army. I think the dialogue between her and him (in the cave) displayed what I would consider a 'moral weakness' in that he knew it would be wrong to kill his wife's entire family, but he did so anyways, and when faced between a crossroads of his decisions, all he could do was 'save' his wife from a suicide attempt as a means to atone for his selfish decision. He's trying to have his cake and eat it too! This theme I see also in "The wind rises", and this character archetype is seen as deeply flawed. cowardly, and something for those in society to avoid being.
Some funny last things I want to note: Saruta looks literally like a monkey, lol
I also noticed a lot of Tezuka's stylistic choices being derivative of disney..... when the dog was shot in the butt with an arrow early in the story, you could see his "yelp" look like how Mickey Mouse's does when he's struck in the back! I think Tezuka was reading lots of Disney comics and watching their animations when he was writing his own comics!
