Clear Blue (1) | Mickey Henry 18+
Summary: You and Mickey have known each other since he moved to Greece. A couple of ex-pats, you flocked to each other for company. You were the first to find out his ex was pregnant and he was going to be a dad. You watched him try, and honestly fail, at the whole âbeing a dadâ thing. And the two of you had a nice couple times hooking up. But Mickey has Chloe now and Mickey does what Mickey does best...he ghosts you. But now you have to break the silence.Â
Mickey Henry x female reader, Mickey Henry x Chloe Gains
a/n: Okay so weâre taking a quick right turn away from Bucky for a second (donât worry, First Grade Updates are coming back soon!) But I just think Sebâs character Mickey Henry from Monday does not get NEARLY enough love/fics on this app. So. Time to change that. This will be a short little mini-series! Iâm not certain if there will be legit smut yet so Iâm just gonna be safe and mark it as 18+
chapter warnings: language, mention of drug usage, a lil angsty really, mentions of sex/sex locations but no specific smut, daddy kink if you squint.
Part 2
Clear blue. Itâs the color of the Aegean Sea as it moves throughout the day, tides coming in and going out. It is the color of Mickey Henryâs eyes, twin pools of the ocean situated on his face. Brightening as he laughs, darkening as he frowns. Itâs also the name of the stupid pregnancy test youâre about to take. Thanks in part to the aforementioned blue eyed God. Except, Mickey Henry isnât a God. Mickey Henry is a man, a very good looking man, that you have known for years. Ever since he moved to Greece really.Â
You and Mickey moved to Greece around the same time. You partied in the same circles, with the same crowd. You explored Greece together. You explored each other a couple times. And then came Aspa. Mickeyâs relationship with Aspa showed you that to him, you were replaceable. Mickey had a tendency to pick you up and put you down whenever another newer, shinier toy came along. And with Aspa, came Hector. When Mickey told you he was going to be a dad you were...concerned to say the least.Â
Never had Mickey Henry proven to you that he was responsible enough to be a dad, youâd also never even talked about if he wanted to be one. But his carelessness put him right in the middle of fatherhood when his son was born. That was six years ago. Not much changed.
In the six years since Aspa had Hector, she and Mickey fought and they fought and they fought. They had broken up not long after Hector was born due to Mickey acting like âa man-child who does drugs and doesnât have a real job.â Aspaâs words. Not yours. But you silently agreed. Mickey never wanted to grow up. He worked as a Deejay on the weekends and during the week he was kissing whoeverâs ass he needed to in order to produce a new jingle.
One thing you had to hand to Mickey, he did love being a dad. He loved Hector, you could see it in his eyes and in the way he spoke about his son. His entire body lit up with excitement and enthusiasm whenever he told you about what his son was learning or doing, even though most of that information came second-hand from Aspa. You could say that Mickey tried to be a dad. He did. But he didnât really try. He half-assed everything, was constantly late, and on top of that he practically refused to learn Greek to even speak with Hector. Needless to say, the whole situation with Aspa and Hector was pretty touchy now.Â
In the years since Aspa and Mickeyâs break up, the two of you hooked up a few times. You were prone to fucking each otherâs brains out after a few lines of coke at one of Mickeyâs gigs. When Argyris found out, by accident after rounding the corner at one of the parties to find Mickey pounding into you from behind as you leaned over his vespa, he was ecstatic. âThis is just what he needs! An American girl! Now go fuck! Make more babies!â Argyris had practically cried tears of joy, while you were too focused on crying Mickeyâs name.
This happened more times than you could count. Youâd do a little blow, drink a little drink, and start kissing just a little after his set. Kissing just a little led to making out intensely. Making out would lead to dry humping. Dry humping would lead to the two of you fucking wherever you could. Leaned over his vespa with one hand on your back holding you in place. Wrapped around his waist in a bathroom stall in between songs. On his lap in the corner booth with the skirt of your dress covering where the two of you met. You didnât particularly care when or how Mickey fucked you, you just knew that you liked it when he did.
That meant that you two werenât particularly careful. You were on the pill and both of you were clean, when you started up the tryst that was the one thing the two of you agreed on, regular STD tests if you were gonna sleep with other people. You both really liked it when he fucked you without a condom, and while Mickey wasnât too certain about the possibility of becoming a dad again, boy did he like being daddy.
But you knew the last couple months of consistent hookups with Mickey were bound to end soon. You just didnât expect to be there when he met his shiny new toy. You tried to support Mickey at all his gigs, well all the ones you could make it to. You saw her, another American, with her short blonde hair as she yelled into her phone on the other side of the party. And as you watched her, you saw Mickey. You watched him take note of her. You watched Argyris push the two of them together in a forced kiss. You watched them make out on the dance floor. And you watched them drunkenly stumble away together.
âWhy are you so grouchy, huh? You need Argyris to kiss it and make it better?â heâd drunkenly uttered as he mock-pouted in your direction. You ignored him, threw back your shot, and elbowed him in the stomach as you walked away.
Chloe was different. She was different from all the other girls Mickey had dated, or slept with casually. She reminded you of Aspa. She was driven, career oriented, she was big shot immigration lawyer for fucks sake. Even you were impressed by her resume. It still didnât make it hurt any less when Mickey decided to ghost you, and all your other friends except Argyris, after the weekend he spent with Chloe. The weekend turned to Sunday, and Sunday to Monday and the next thing you knew you were hearing the story of how Mickey had chased Chloe down through the Athens airport and convinced her to stay with him.
You were nice to Chloe. Why wouldnât you be. You were nice to all of Mickeyâs girlfriends whenever heâd deem you worthy of meeting them. You never understood how the fuck Argyris always made the cut of the list of friends who could meet the girls. Probably something to do with the fact that you relationship with Mickey was never purely platonic. But when you met Chloe you knew. You knew she wasnât going anywhere anytime soon.Â
But you may have made a mistake. You shouldâve known that sooner or later your exploits with Mickey would come to light. He and Chloe have been together for three months now. The two of you had hooked up last mere days before he met Chloe. You didnât seem to notice anything different. But when your boobs were more sore than theyâd ever been? When the smell of gyros made you want to vomit? When your body was just so tired that all you wanted to do was go home and sleep after doing nothing all do? You started doing the math. You counted. And you counted. And you recounted. And you realized... it had been four months. Four months since your last period.Â
And thatâs how you ended up here. Squatting over your toilet and trying to pee on a stick thatâs too damn small, all while thinking there has got to be a better way to test for this. And then you waited. Fifteen minutes you waited. Your stomach rolling and threatening to empty all its contents yet again. The shrill beeping of your timer going off set off a new bout of nausea. And so you took a deep breath, you brought the stick up to your face and you opened your eyes.Â
Two lines.
And you blinked. Once. Twice. Three times. And then you had to quickly remove your body from the toilet to vomit.
Pregnant.
âHoly fucking shit.â
a/n: I hope yâall liked this first chapter!!!Â

WIP List!
Mickey Henry x fem!Reader - You hate his music taste. He hates yours. You have a bad habit of stealing his gigs. He has a bad habit of fucking you until you canât walk straight. Everyone has flaws. What are you to do about it?
This one will be a few firsts for me; first published smut, first Mickey Henry fic, and first enemies-to-lovers ever! Iâm attached to friends-to-lovers (my parentsâ fault), so going in the opposite direction is exciting and I hope it works out! (Weâll see what it can become after itâs been written.) Also! This is gonna be for @honeysucklesteveââs 4k honeybunswritingchallenge!
Part 2 of Ocean Eyes, Cherry Lips, Ivory Keys
Iâm honestly in love with the idea of Bucky playing the piano (guys who can do music just *chefs kiss*) and I love 40âs!Bucky so, while I donât have any solid ideas for this and itâll probably end up just being a double parter, maybe a mini series, but I wanna explore it a bit more.
Steve Rogers x Stark!Reader
This one kinda came outta nowhere (for you guys at least), but Iâve been working on it for a few months now and Iâm kinda in love with the idea. Itâs a bit intense - it deals with some really serious stuff (drugs, depression, attempted suicide) - but I really like angst. Plus, I wanna write more Steve! I love my Brooklyn Blondie! This would be a full series.
Bucky Barnes x fem!Reader
This is one that people have been asking quite a bit about. The whole âBucky shoots the love of his lifeâ one. It starts in the early 1900âs but it does have a modern day story added. The thing is - I can cut it short and make the ending really really depressing OR I can make it a full series with a happier ending. This one will make you feel even worse for Bucky, so thereâs that. This story is my baby! I started it over a year ago and keep coming to it to edit it or add something, but it kinda lacks direction, soâŚmaybe posting it here will actually force me to develop it more.
Bucky Barnes x genius!fem!Reader
This one is one of my favorites that Iâve written. Iâm in love with it. Itâs beenâŚaround a year? I think? Since I started this one. Itâs got some rough family stuff on her part - like really rough so there will be major warnings - and itâs a bit tough for Bucky lovers at first because it does involve HYDRA and the Winter Soldier and thatâs always heart breaking. I donât wanna give out too many spoilers, but there will be angst, but also lots of fluff (especially domestic fluff that takes place in *REDACTED*.)
I also have a few singledad!Bucky fics that I love, but I wouldnât know which ones to choose and which ones I would add a reader to, because there isnât one, itâs just Bucky with kids! (Different kids/different AUs! I have quite a few! đ
)
Iâm gonna try working on Erased from the Stars as well, but Iâve just lost myself with that series and the desire just isnât coming (yet), so I think that one will stay on hiatus for the time being.
These donât include FATWS One Shots, because I will continue posting those throughout the week until theyâre finished! I kinda wanna shift when I post them to Friday to continue FATWS Friday, but weâll see what my future schedule looks like!
This is not in order of when theyâll be posted! These are just what Iâm gonna be working on. Feel free to tell me which one you wanna see first! (The only one I know is coming out soon is the Mickey x Reader, which will be out sometime next week!)
Note: Most of these that Iâve been developing for a while started out with an OC! Iâd love to tell you about them, but I will be shifting the story some to make it x Reader for you lovelies!
WARNING: From here on out, most of my work will contain some 18+ stuff! Minors DNI! Iâve been lenient on it because my FATWS Series didnât have 18+ stuff, but Iâm gonna start writing it more into these works! Those are the rules and I donât wanna get in trouble, so please follow them! Thank you!
I wonât be able to crank out a chapter of every series every week and most likely, once I start a series, I wonât start another one. Iâm thinking about getting another job in a couple months and my familyâs getting together soon so after May Iâm gonna be a lot busier. Thank you so much for all the love and support Iâve gotten! I really appreciate all of you!
Be kind to yourself and others and stay tuned! đ

At the beginning of âCatspawâ Lt. Jackson opens communications with Uhura and says âOne to beam up, Enterprise!â Shortly after Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy reach the transporter room, Jackson begins to materialize and then falls flat to the floor without moving a muscle. It almost hurts to watch, but it is just one of the perfectly executed stunts performed by Jay Jones. Jones recalls that at the time, he had never watched the show. So when he received his copy of the script, he was puzzled by the phrase âbeam up.â It took until the next day for him to find out after he had flagged down a young boy on a bicycle and asked. By the way, look at Shatnerâs quick reaction as Jones tumbles past his feet. Some fancy footwork there, Captain!
But this was not the only place you saw him during this episode. During the scene just after Korob dies trying to help Kirk and Spock escape, the two are attacked by Sulu, Scotty, and Bones himself - all under the control of Sylvia, of course. In the photo above, that is not Dr. McCoy you see attempting to swing a morning-star. That is his stunt double, Jay Jones. Jay claimed that Gene Roddenberry took a liking to him and sent the word down that he should be given all the work he wanted.
Jay played a number of other crewmen in the series, and several times his stuntman experience came in handy. In the redshirt bloodbath episode known as âThe Apple,â he appeared as Ensign Mallory. The hapless young man was not there when Spock first found out the rocks were explosive. While scouting, he manages to find another one the hard way and is killed. This was one of the two episodes where Jones suffered serious injuries. In this case, he had even lobbied director Joe Pevney to do the stunt, saying he did not want to do it âthe Mickey Mouse way.â Pevney refused the request at first because of the danger and then relented. According to Jay, there was a jumper trampoline buried under the ground that he was supposed to hit and then the explosive would go off. However, the special effects person timed it just a split second too late. In his own words, âThe force hit me in the stomach, burned my side, blew the skin off my rib cage and impacted all this dirt into my sinuses. I couldnât open my eyes or breathe.â Still, he told an interviewer that it could have been a lot worse even though he did wind up in an emergency room. (The explosion also caused short term hearing loss in both Shatner and Nimoy as well as permanent tinnitus). Most of his roles did not involve much dialogue, but he had his largest number of lines in this episode.Â
Actually, his worst injuries on the set occurred on another episode, âWho Mourns for Adonais?â This time he was doubling for James Doohan as Scotty. The first injury occurred when Apollo slaps Scotty and Jay had to do a backflip over the stone table shown in the above photo. The first time, he hit the corner, so the table was chained down for the next attempt. This time, he caught the tableâs edge in the kidneys. Already sore from that injury, he had to do another stunt where he was strapped into a wire vest, raised up six feet in the air and then propelled backward. In the stunt industry, itâs known as a neckbreaker. However, the wire pulley yanked him four or five yards farther than planned and he went through the wall, striking his head on the concrete floor. He was taken to the hospital with a concussion. And actually Jay did have a stroke of good fortune - he narrowly missed another prop which could have caused an even more serious injury (according to The Star Trek Compendium). Again, he brushed off the injury as not all that bad.
Despite these injuries Jay Jones continued as Scottyâs stunt double for two years. Above you see him encountering a railing on the bridge in âThe Changeling.â (Scotty certainly got smacked around a lot, didnât he?) And he would often double for other guest stars. More on that later. In the book Science Fiction Television Series, Jay claimed that he was the unofficial stunt coordinator for The Original Series. He would come up with new stunts and work with the directors and cameramen on how best to implement them in certain episodes. Jay complimented Star Trek on calling back the same stunt people to work again because they all were familiar with the production staff and had built a rapport with them and each other. He said in some TV series, the director sometimes asked the impossible and could have possibly gotten someone killed. On the Star Trek set, he knew the directors cared about the stunt workers.
And he continued as an extra in episodes during that time, including one as the gangster Mirt in âA Piece of the Actionâ and several as an engineer. You would think heâd want to stay as far away from a redshirt as he could after his injuries.
Jay got to appear as a Klingon three times during his time on Star Trek. His first appearance was as Tige Andrewâs stunt double in the role of Kras in âFridayâs Child.â (left) And he doubled for Ned Romero as Krell in âA Private Little War.â (top right). He donned the Klingon costume one last time as one of Kangâs crewmen in âDay of the Dove.â
And what does Pavel Chekov have to do with this story? Jay Jones says that there was a push to add some more recurring characters at the time he made his first appearance on âCatspaw.â In fact, they asked him if he would try out some accents in a few test shots. However, he had recently tried a French accent in a stage production and botched it terribly, so he refused. Only later did he realize he would have been trying out for the role that eventually became that of Chekov. Oh, well.... at least he didnât have to wear that terrible wig until his own hair grew in.
Jimmy (âJayâ) D. Jones came to Hollywood after being in the rodeo circuit. His first work as a stuntman on television was in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. where he was often Robert Vaughnâs stunt double. He also had an acting part in one episode - that of Professor Walter Powers in the episode âYo-ho-ho and a Bottle of Rum.â This was the job he left when he joined Star Trek. (credit to Brad Fillipone for finding the above photos for me)
Jay came from good stuntman stock. His dad was Carl Pitti, a very well known stuntman/actor in the industry who had worked on such shows as The High Chaparral. He was Henry Darrowâs double in his role of Manolito for an episode.
Interesting side note: Carl Pitti was a fan of The Original Series and watched it religiously. But he was aghast when he watched his son get thrown in the air by the mistimed explosion in âThe Apple.â Jay said it literally made his dad sick to his stomach.
Jay often appeared in the same series as his father, starting with The Man from U.N.C.L.E. After Star Trek ended, he was also stuntman for The High Chaparral and appeared in the episode âAllianceâ as Lt. Cooper. (Photo above)
Jay appeared on other Westerns as well. In fact, he doubled for Slim Pickens in a brutal bullwhipping scene in the 1967 movie Rough Night in Jericho. He used the same bullwhipping skills against Dan Blocker (Hoss) in a 1971 episode of Bonanza titled âKingdom of Fear.â
One of his last acting jobs was in Kung Fu, playing a demon Caine encounters in the spiritual world during the episode âOne Step to Darkness.â If you want to watch that segment of the show, here is a link. https://youtu.be/EDmvigzLJHw
In 1977, Jones left stunt work and acting for the racquetball courts. He began playing the amateur circuit in the 1972-73 area. Despite getting off to a rough start, in 1975 he won the national amateur division at Las Vegas. From there, he began competing in the pros and over the years had a decent showing. Keep in mind he was in his thirties when he started and most of the pros were a lot younger. He did win the 1981 U.S. National Singles Championship for his age group of 35+. Jay was interviewed in 1977 by the Tucson Daily Citizen after he had advanced to the semifinals of of the Tucson Pro-Am Racquetball Tournament. He admitted to using a mini-receiver which emitted a steady hum that helped him concentrate. But it also allowed him to hear advice from a friend who was womenâs pro player as well. The interviewer went on to mention that Jay Jones was also a hypnotist and psychologist. Now how amazing is that?
Above photo - Hall of Famer Ed Remen and Jay Jones at the menâs semi-finals. Unknown what year, but from the website where it appeared, most likely around 1981. Jay is on the right.
Over the years, Jay Jones seems to be quite active, appearing at conventions for The High Chaparral (above he appears on an interview panel for the 50th anniversary) And I am not positive about this, but he may be the reporter whose byline is Jay Jones in at least two articles for the Los Angeles Times. In a 2013 article, he reports on a charity racquetball event. And in a story dated this past May, the same person reports on a rodeo event. What other person do we know who has experience in both activities?
Jay Jones!

Hey uh ;; Feel free to ignore but I saw you did a k-drama and anime list.. I was wondering if you could do some suggestions for tv shows?? You don't have to -
Sure I can! The lists where a long while ago though so Iâll probably make a master post for them too?
1. House -Â The series follows the life of anti-social, pain killer addict, witty and arrogant medical doctor Gregory House with only half a muscle in his right leg. He and his team of medical doctors try to cure complex and rare diseases from very ill ordinary people in the United States of America.
2. Person of interest - An ex-assassin and a wealthy programmer saves lives via a surveillance AI named the machine that sends them the identities of civilians involved in impending crimes. However, the details of the crimesâincluding the civiliansâ rolesâare left a mystery and things take a twist when another Ai declares war against the machine. Honestly itâs amazing, and if you like the shows where the heroes arenât always the ones to survive then itâs the one for you (and thereâs a pretty darn good dog in it too).
3. New Tricks - After a hostage rescue goes wrong, superintendent Sandra Pullman is put in charge of unsolved crimes. With little resources and no back-up she decides to recruit three ex policeman. However times have changed, unlike her new recruits. Jack Halford is yet to get over the loss of his wife, Brian Lane is over obsessed and over medicated, and Gerry Standing is not quite the ladies man he used to be. They may have the experience but itâs not like the old days. Not only are they chasing criminals, but they are having to deal with a new police force which does not always appreciate their old style policing. Unsolved cases with a group of witty elderly, whatâs not to love?
4. Hustle -Â The story of a group of elite con artists, who each week pull off a complicated scam with several twists. Mickey is the groupâs leader, who comes up with the plans. Albert is a veteran con man who in his later years is a âroper,â searching out suitable victims and introducing them to his cohorts. Ash comes up with all the locations and equipment needed for the cons. Stacie steps in whenever she needs to use her feminine wiles. The group is rounded off by Danny, a young amateur grifter who Mickey takes under his wing. Honestly? Some of their plans are pretty darn good.
5. Primeval -Â When strange anomalies start to appear all over England, Professor Cutter and his team must track down and capture all sorts of dangerous prehistoric creatures from Earthâs distant past and near future putting their lives at risk whilst trying their best to keep it a secret from the public or possibly bribing the people who do see. Want to see people on mini bikes chasing a velociraptor in a mall? Then this is definitely the show for you-
6. Once upon a time - A story of a new world, one in which fairy-tale legends and modern life collide. Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is comfortable in her life as a bail bonds collector when Henry â the child she gave up a decade earlier â suddenly shows up. He is convinced that she is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, who sent her away before the Evil Queen could cast a spell, freezing the fairy tale world in time and bringing them to present-day Storybrooke, Maine. After taking Henry home, Emma decides to stay in the town to keep an eye on him, and she discovers he may not be wrong after all. Seriously you get really into it and root for the characters really quickly.
7. Buffy the vampire slayer - "In every generation there is a chosen one⌠she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.â Buffy Summers knows this tale by heart, and no matter how hard she tries to be just a "normal girlâ, she can not escape from her destiny⌠Thankfully, she is not alone in her quest to save the world, as she has the help of her friends, the hilarious evil-fighting team called âThe Scooby Gangâ. Together, Buffy & co. will slay their demons, survive one apocalypse after another, attend high school and college⌠and above all, understand that growing up can truly be Hell sometimes⌠literally.
8. The x files -Â Two FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully work in an unassigned detail of the bureau called the X-Files investigating cases dealing with unexplained paranormal phenomena (aliens). Mulder, a true believer, and Scully, a skeptic, perceive their cases from stand points of science and the paranormal. This can literally get really weird but to be honest itâs one hell of a ride.Â
9. Death in paradise -Â Scotland Yard DI Richard Poole is sent to the Caribbean island of Sainte Marie to solve a fellow policemanâs murder. Having done so, he finds himself seconded to the local police force as the dead manâs replacement. Poole proves to be a brilliant detective, solving several complex murders. Heâs not quite suited to either the pace of life on the island or the heat and sand, neither of which he likes very much. He also doesnât like seafood. That aside, the place is just great. Of course there are some changes along the road with main characters but over all this is a pretty good show
10. Brooklyn nine-nine -Â Captain Ray Holt takes over Brooklynâs 99th precinct, which includes Detective Jake Peralta, a talented but carefree detective whoâs used to doing whatever he wants. The other employees of the 99th precinct include Detective Amy Santiago, Jakeâs over achieving and competitive partner; Detective Rosa Diaz, a tough and kept to herself coworker; Detective Charles Boyle, Jakeâs best friend who also has crush on Rosa; Detective Sergeant Terry Jeffords, who was recently taken off the field after the birth of his twin girls; and Gina Linetti, the precinctâs sarcastic administrator. If you love comedy and idiotic situations this is a great show to watchÂ
Bonus shows that are worth mentioning:
Sherlock
Doctor who
The walking dead

The Weekend Warrior Jan. 24, 2020 â THE GENTLEMEN, THE TURNING, THE LAST FULL MEASURE
If you read last weekâs column, youâll already know that Iâm no longer with The Beat, so Iâll more than likely be doing all of my box office stuff here for a while. I just wonât promise to write so much about each movie as I did in my Box Office Preview, because a.) I donât have time, and b.) Iâm not getting paid to write this. Sorry if thatâs a bit too blatantly honest, but getting paid for my writing matters to me, especially having done it for 25 years.
Before I forget, tonight, Wednesday, January 22, Iâm hosting a 30thanniversary screening of Brain Dead, the freaky thriller starring Bills Pullman and Paxton, Bud Cort and George Kennedy. If youâre looking to check out crazy mind-fuck of a movie from 1990, there are still a few tickets left.
Anyway, itâs probably a good thing I didnât get paid for last weekâs column cause I way, way, WAY underestimated the power of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to bring in audiences after 17 years since Bad Boys II. I thought the movie would make somewhere between $35 and 40 million over the four-day weekend, but it ended up making almost $60 million just over the three-day weekend, and $73 million for the four day, the second best after American Sniper. Obviously, Sony is already developing a fourth movie in the series and presumably they wonât wait another 18 years. Personally, I really liked Bad Boys for Life, as it was way better than Bad Boys II and it was a generally enjoyable and entertaining action-comedy.
Universalâs Dolittlealso did more than I predicted, but it wasnât as vastly different, just closer to my original prediction last Wednesday before I thought I might be overestimating and lowered it. Waugh, WaughâŚ
Letâs get to this weekâŚ
The movie Iâm most excited about this week is THE GENTLEMEN (STXfilms), which is Guy Ritchieâs return to ensemble crime comedy after his foray into large-scale Disney adaptations like Aladdin, which I quite liked, and his âSherlock Holmesâ movies, the first of which I also loved.  Ritchie has a great cast for this one including Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, Henry Golding (from Crazy Rich Asians and the underrated 2019 film Last Christmas), Michelle Dockery (from Downton Abbey) and one of my favorite character actors, Eddie Marsan! Honestly, I donât know very much else about the movie (as Iâm only seeing it on Monday night) but I loved what I saw at CinemaCon last year, and Iâve just been such a huge Ritchie fan going all the way back to Lock, Stock and Two Smokinâ Barrels. (Sadly, I wasnât able to interview him for this movie due to my other part-time job, but youâll get an actual review instead!)  Also, I think the movie will do decently but probably not more than $10 million since STX is dropping it into around 2,000 theaters, which isnât particularly wide.
Mini-Review: Back in the late â90s, when Guy Ritchie first made his big debut with Lock, Stock, he was coming on the tail end of a new breed of directors like Tarantino and Smith who proved that screenplay-driven ensemble movies could deliver big audiences. In the time since then, Tarantino has gotten bigger and bigger for that feat, while Ritchie has tried a lot of different things, including last yearâs Aladdin.
Itâs pretty exciting to see Ritchie returning to the world of crime and to jolly old England with the addition of a few Americans like Matthew McConaughey as mega-wealthy drugdealer Mickey Pearson, who has turned his upper-class connections quite literally into a farm industry. Mickey is ready to sell the business, hoping to get $400 million from Jeremy Strongâs interested investor.
The story is told through a framing sequence involving a strange character named Fletcher, played by Hugh Grant, having an extended conversation with Charlie Hunnamâs Ray, Mickeyâs âfixer,â of sorts. Itâs another fantastic performance by Grant that really allows him to push the envelope with a heavy cockney accent. Another great performance comes from Colin Farrell as the coach of a group of young and bratty MMA fighers who break into one of Mickeyâs farms.
Using this storytelling method, Ritchie doesnât give his entire hand away at once, instead revealing just whatâs necessary to keep the viewer tuned in. The film features another witty script and itâs thoroughly entertaining, although itâs also somewhat confounding at times trying to keep track of all the characters and how they relate.
In that sense, The Gentlemen is slightly flawed, but itâs also a welcome return for Ritchie to do what he does best, and thereâs no denying that thereâs quite a bit to enjoy here. Rating:Â 7/10
The third horror movie of January (with another one next week!) is THE TURNING (Universal), a horror take on Henry Jamesâ novel âThe Turn of the Screw,â starring Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), Finn Wolfhard (It) and the adorable Brooklynn Prince from The Florida Project. The basic premise involves a nanny played by Davis, who is brought to an enormous mansion to care for two kids. Once there, she is told by the kids that there are dark forces in the house, and she starts to believe them.  I had a chance to speak to the filmâs director, Floria Sigismondi, an amazing visual artist whose only previous feature film was The Runaways, starring Kristen Stewart.  The movie is also written by the Hayes Brothers, who wrote the original The Conjuring, and produced by Roy Lee (The Conjuring and It), so thereâs quite a decent pedigree for this movie. I also conducted a great interview with Ms. Sigismondi that you can check out on Next Best Picture.
As the third horror movie this month, Iâm not sure this can deliver where the previous two (The Grudge and Underwater) failed, especially without much star power, but because itâs January, and thereâs very little else to do, it can probably make $8 to 10 million in its 2,500 theaters.
Opening in moderate release this weekend  (theater count TBD) is filmmaker Todd Robinsonâs THE LAST FULL MEASURE (Roadside Attractions), a military drama that the director has been trying to make for a decade. Heâs pulled together an amazing cast that includes Christopher Plummer, Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris, Diane Ladd, Sebastian Stan, Bradley Whitford, Peter Fonda, William Hurt, Jeremy Irvine and Michael Imperioli. I still remember Robinson mentioning this project when I spoke to him for his excellent movie Lonely Heartswhen we spoke for ComingSoon.netway back in 2007, having seen that movie at the Tribeca Film Festival.
It involves a group of Vietnam vets trying to get a brave soldier, Airman William H. Pitsenberger Jr. (played by Irvine), the Medal of Honor for his actions on the battlefield to save them 34 years after his death. It sounds like a terrific premise, so itâs a movie Iâve been waiting to see for a very long time. Â Iâm not sure exactly how many theaters Roadside Attractions will release the movie into, but I doubt it will be enough to get it into the top 10, as I think it will end up making $2 to 3 million at best. (This probably would have been a good movie to release over Veteransâ Day, but I guess it was afraid of Roland Emmerichâs Midway, which did end up winning that weekend.)
Mini-Review: Itâs pretty obvious what a passion project this must have been for filmmaker Todd Robinson from the time itâs taken for him to get this movie made, but once watch how this story plays out, itâs much more obvious why he was so driven. Even fifty years after the events depicted in the filmâs Vietnam War flashback
Itâs 1999, and Sebastian Stan plays Scott Huffman, an Air Force attorney working at the Pentagon who is assigned the duty of investigating the heroics of Airman William H. Pitsenberger Jr., who dropped into one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War to save a number of soldiers. William Hurt plays Tulley, the soldier that comes to Huffman, although the lawyer tries to put him off due to the upcoming regime change. Against his will, Scott has to pursue this endeavor, so he goes to interview a number of the living men who were there on that fateful day.
Whatâs amazing about Robinsonâs film is that while it focuses mainly on Stanâs character, the various actors he meets on his journey deliver some absolutely amazing performances, from Christopher Plummer (as the dead airmanâs dying father), Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris and the late Peter Fonda.
At its worst, The Last Full Measure veers into TV movie melodrama, so it takes some of the stronger actors to drag it back. The worst example of this are the scenes between Stan and his ersatz family, which seems the most like needless scenes added to create some sort of artistic license. It probably will be little surprise that many of the names and circumstances have been changed for similar reason.
Itâs a shame that Roadside Attractions doesnât have enough faith in this movie to give this a bigger push, instead dumping it into a January weekend with little fanfare. Sure, this is certainly the type of movie that cynical film critics like tearing apart, trying to find faults over the goodâŚ. And thereâs a lot of good to be had. Thereâs no denying that this is an important story that needs to be told, and hopefully, the audiences that might appreciate it will be able to find it. Rating: 7.5/10
What should be interesting to see if the horror film The Turning does well enough to surpass Dolittle for third place or falls just short. Either way, Universal will have three movies in the top 5, which is quite remarkable considering what a horrid December the studio had.
This weekâs Top 10 should look something like thisâŚ
1. Bad Boys for Life (Sony) - $29.5 million -53%
2. 1917Â (Universal) - $13 million -41% (up 1 million)*
3. Dolittle (Universal) - $10.1 million -54%
4. The Turning (Universal) - $9.3 million N/A (up .2 million)*
5. The Gentlemen (STXfilms) - $8.6 million N/A (up .1 million)*
6. Jumanji: The Next Level  (Sony) - $5 million -48%
7. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Lucasfilm/Disney) - $4 million -52%
8. Little Women (Sony)  - $3.5 million -45%
9. Just Mercy (Warner Bros.) - $3.1 million -47%
10. Knives Out  (Lionsgate) - $2.6 million -40%
- The Last Full Measure (Roadside Attractions) - $2 million N/A (down .5 million)*
* UPDATE: Not a ton of changes but mainly a little bit of tweaking due to revised theater counts
LIMITED RELEASES
Not a ton of limited releases of note that Iâve seen, although I did see Richard Stanleyâs sci-fi thriller COLOR OUT OF SPACE (RLJE Films), starring the one and only Nicolas Cage, and I even spoke to Stanley, an interview youâll be able to read on Next Best Picturehopefully later this week. Itâs based on HP Lovecraftâs short story, and in the movie, Cage plays an Alpaca farmer whose family is affected by a meteorite that falls on the property, causing all sorts of bizarre changes both mentally and physically. Itâs another movie where Cage can go a little nuts, but I also liked the performances by Madeleine Arthur and Joely Richardson, who ALSO appears in The Turning this weekend. There are also some smaller roles from Qâorianka Kilcher (from Malickâs The New World) and the great comic, Tommy Chong.  There will be a special screening tonight in select cities with a satellite QnA with Stanley and Cage, and then it opens for real Friday. Being RLJE, it should be On Demand shortly afterwards.
Oddly, I havenât seen any of the movies in the franchise that brings us DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 Â (Wanda Pictures/WB International), but the previous installments of director Sicheng Chenâs police action-comedy must have done well enough for people to want to see more of detectives Tang Ren (Baoquiang Wang) and Qin Feng (Haoran Liu) to get a third movie. The first movie made $120.6 million worldwide while the sequel made $544 million, so yeah, a third movie was inevitable. The sequel made less than $2 million domestically but one can expect that Chinese audiences in America will help the third movie do similarly. For comparison, the latest installment of the Ip Man franchise, starring Donny Yen, has grossed $3.5 million in North America. This will open in about 150 theaters.
Sadly, I also didnât get a chance to see Dante Lamâs The Rescue (CMC Pictures), the Chinese filmmakerâs follow-up to his global blockbuster Operation Red Sea, before writing this column, but this is clearly one of the major Chinese tentpoles being released for the Lunar New Year movie season. It stars Eddie Peng from Operation Mekong as the captain of an elite rescue team, and itâs shot by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragonâs Oscar-winning cinematographer Peter Pau.  Iâm hoping to see it this coming Friday.
Terry Crews stars as John Henry (Saban/Paramount) in Will Forbes, in this case Henry being an ex-gang member who puts aside his life of violence to take care of his aging father (played by Ken Foree from Dawn of the Dead )in South L.A. where he meets two immigrant kids on the run from his former gang leader (Ludacris), putting him in a tough spot. It will open in select cities and On Demand this Friday.
Bertrand Bonello, who made the excellent Nocturama a few weeks back, returns with his eighth feature Zombi Child (Film Movement), which is a very different take on the genre.  It draws from the true story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was reportedly zombified in 1962 Haiti, this one centering around Narcisseâs (fictional) orphaned granddaughter who is trying to fit in with the mostly white girls at her boarding school. It will open in New York at the Quad Cinemaand at Lincoln Center.
Lastly, thereâs the Bollywood film Panga (FIP) from director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, starring Kangana Ranaut as a middle-class Indian woman and former kabaddiworld champion looking for new meaning as a wife and mother, who decides to return to the sport despite her age and responsibility to family. It will open in roughly 100 theaters.
REPERTORY
METROGRAPH (NYC):
Opening Friday at the Metrograph is the 1stU.S. release of the directorâs cut of Jia Zhangkeâs 2010 documentary I Wish I Knew, which looks at the past and present of Shanghai in a documentary full of interviews with people from all different walks of life including local actresses and fellow filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien. It also follows Zhangkeâs favorite actress Zhao Tao, who was amazing in last yearâs Ash is Purest White, as she explores the site of the Shanghai World Expo Park as itâs under construction. Itâs a great film to learn more about the history of mainland China, something I greatly appreciated having been such a longtime inhabitant of Chinatown.
Even more exciting is that the Metrograph is starting a retrospective series for indie filmmaker Hal Hartleythis Friday, which is exciting since Iâve been such a big fan but havenât seen nearly as many of his films as there are out there, having only seen his debut The Unbelievable Truth (1989) a few years back, also at the Metrograph. Hal Hartley will be at the Metrograph this Friday night, January 24, and then back on February 1 for screenings of Henry Fool (1997) and its 2006 sequel, Fay Grim. This weekend, you can see Trust from 1990, Simple Men (1992), 1994âs Amateur and more.
With the nomination of Julia Reichert and Steven Bonarâs American Factory receiving an Oscar nomination, Metrograph has put together a last-minute series, âThe Academy-Nominated Films of Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar,â a program of three shorts including the 2009 short The Last Truck(shown with American Factory), 1976âs Union Maids and 1971âs Growing Up Female, and the 2006 miniseries A Lion in the House.
This weekendâs Late Nites at Metrograph  is the Jackie Chan action classic Police Story (1985). Oops, I made a little error as Playtime: Family Matinees, was supposed to be Taika Waititiâs 2016 film The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, but it got changed to Peter Weirâs 1989 movie Dead Poets Society, starring Robin Williams, which is also quite good.
ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE BROOKLYNÂ (NYC)
Besides tonightâs âWeird Wednesdayâ of Brain Dead (1990), theyâre doing a Troop Beverly Hills âQuote-Alongâ tomorrow night. If that isnât good enough, on Monday, you can see the Lonely Islandâs amazing Popstar: Never Stop Stopping either as part of the monthly âOut of Tuneâ hosted by my pal Jeremy Wein at 7pm or at 9:30 as a Sing-Along, well except that both are very close to sold out. Next weekâs âTerror Tuesdayâ is the Japanese horror classic Ringu (1998) (Iâll be there) and then âWeird Wednesdayâ is 1979âs Killer Nun.
THE NEW BEVERLY (L.A.):
Wednesdayâs âAfternoon Classicsâ is Ernest Borgnineâs 1955 film Marty, and then Weds. and Thursâ nightâs double feature is Bob & Carol & Ted & Aliceand Jacques Demyâs Model Shop, both from 1969. Monday and Tuesday night is a Henry Hathaway double feature of The Lives of a Bengal Lancer(1935) and The Trailer of the Lonesome Pine (1936).
FILM FORUM (NYC):
While the âBlack Women: Trailblazing African American Performers & Images, 1920 â 2001â continues this weekend with the 1934 and 1959 iterations of Imitation of Life, as well as screenings of Whatâs Love Got To Do with It, the Tina Turner biopic starring Angela Basset, who received an Oscar nomination for it, and then the Film Forum Jr. screening is The Wiz, starring Michael Jackson and Donna Summer. Other movies in the series include Cleopatra Jones, Gone with the Wind and Spike Leeâs debut Sheâs Gotta Have it. This weekâs âSunday Print Editionâ is Carol Reedâs Night Train to Munich(1940) in 35mm in the afternoon and then Richard Benjamin and Dyan Cannon will be on hand to discuss the amazing 1973 thriller The Last of Sheila, one of my favorite movies.

Besides a matinee screening of Scorseseâs Goodfellas on Thursday (free to Cinemateque members), the AERO begins a âFord Vs.â series with a double feature of John Fordâs The Quiet Man  (1952) with Sam Peckinpahâs classic Straw Dogs (1971). Friday is Fordâ sStagecoach(1939) with Kelly Reichardtâs Meekâs Cutoff  (2010). Saturday at 9AM, you can watch a triple-feature of Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, and then in the afternoon, the AERO will show Toy Story 4 with guests. Thatâs a full day of Toy Story viewing! Saturday nightâs âFord Vs.â is Fordâs The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance with Akira Kurosawaâs Sanjuro, both from 1962. On Sunday, Netflix will stream the first season of Fast and Furious: Spy Racers, which I have little to no interest in. I have a little more interest in Star Trek: Picard, which will begin streaming on CBS All Access on Thursday.
Thatâs it for this week. Next weekend is the Super Bowl, but thatâs not gonna stop the releases of Gretel and Hansel(U.A. Releasing) and Blake Livelyâs The Rhythm Section (Pararamount).

Two Artists of Color Boldly Provoke a Conservative Museum Locked in the Past
Carolina Caycedo, still from âApariciones /Apparitions.â Choreographed by Marina MagalhĂŁes and shot by David de Rozas. Courtesy of the artist.
The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, opened to the public in 1928 to showcase the rare English tomes and early American paintings that Henry E. Huntington acquired with the wealth earned off of the backs of the minorities who built his railways. It is a Gilded Age palace built out of exquisite taste and whitewashed pain.
Yet today, in its ordinarily staid galleries, visitors will now see people of color convulsing among the books. Captured on film while dressed in white and tossing their beautiful hair, these banshees throb and jerk in the institutionâs main exhibition hall, which hosts rarities such as a first edition of John James Audubonâs Birds of America and a Shakespeare First Folio. The video then jumps, revealing the provocateurs flanking pallid marble busts of 17th- and 18th-century English grandees, staring at their observers with fierce expressions. The performers then tumble and crawl down the staircase of Henry E. Huntingtonâs Beaux-Arts mansion. Finally, while draped in bright fiber nets, they romp and tremble through the propertyâs empire-tastic âthemed gardens,â which boast mini âAustralian,â âJungle,â âChinese,â âJapanese,â and âCamelliaâ parklands.
Carolina Caycedo, still from â Apariciones /Apparitions.â Choreographed by Marina MagalhĂŁes and shot by David de Rozas. Courtesy of the artist.
These scenesâfrom Carolina Caycedoâs Apariciones (âApparitionsâ)âform part of the Huntington Libraryâs âRituals of Labor and Engagementâ show, which displays Caycedoâs collages and film alongside the drawings of artist Mario Ybarra Jr. Featuring works all made in 2018, and staged in collaboration with the Vincent Price Art Museum, the exhibition is the third installment of the Huntingtonâs exciting â/fiveâ series. This endeavor sees the library partnering with cultural organizations and allowing artists to engage with its vast and precious collection.
The series initiated in 2016, when the Huntington invited scientists from NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to build a sound installation that represented the movement of the International Space Station. The next year, the Huntingtonâs hushed halls filled with the tumult caused by artists affiliated with the Los Angelesâbased Womenâs Center for Creative Work. For that exhibition, Jheanelle Garriques responded to the Huntingtonâs Anglomaniac bent by curating a bluestocking storytelling, letter-writing, and dance event; Kiki Loveday reacted to the libraryâs rich holdings of classical images through her creation of a Sapphic and queer florilegium of ephemera.
Now, itâs Caycedo and Ybarraâs turn to shake the Huntington down to its foundations with their interventions. Caycedo, born in London of Colombian parents and currently living in L.A., possesses an art practice that invests deeply in community engagement. Her past projects include Be Dammed,an installation of fishing nets, which reflected the impacts of water privatization in Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, and Guatemala; as well as 2013âs Less Than Lethal,a series of inkjet prints depicting how state police suppress dissent through technologies such as rubber bullets, water cannons, and electric tasers.
Carolina Caycedo, photo from âApariciones /Apparitions.â Choreographed by Marina MagalhĂŁes and shot by David de Rozas. Courtesy of the artist.
Caycedoâs commitment to the collective informs her two-part contribution to âRituals of Labor and Engagement.â In the aforementioned video, Apariciones, the performers clash and fuse with the Huntingtonâs massive assemblage of cultural products, purchased with the largesse arrogated by the Huntington family when it steered the Central Pacific Railroad and built Southern Californiaâs Pacific Electric Railway in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both of these transportation behemoths exacted terrible injustices on people of color: While under the leadership of Henry Huntingtonâs uncle, Collis, more than 7,000 Chinese laborers built the Central Pacific under bone-shattering conditions. When they struck for higher wages in 1867, foremen cut off their food supply. Henry Huntington himself later focused on Southern Californiaâs âRed Carâ system with Pacific Electric Railway, and continued the tradition of playing hardball with protesters. In 1903, Latino laborers struck to protest wages and to seek an increase in overtime pay. Huntington ordered L.A. police to arrest any picketers.
The Huntingtonâs massive cache reflects its troubling origin story, as Henry Huntington proved just as passionate and selective an art collector as he was an overseer. Beyond celebrating the genius of Jack London, Henry David Thoreau, George Washington, and other glitterati of American cultural and political history, the galleriesâ lavish paintingsâsuch as The Blue Boy (ca. 1770), the libraryâs famous Thomas Gainsborough portrait of a peach-cheeked child squire; and Pinkie (1794), Thomas Lawrenceâs beautifully kitschy glamour shot of an 11-year-old descendent of wealthy white sugar magnates and slaveownersâglorify Anglo histories of distinction and standards of beauty.
Thomas Gainsborough, The Blue Boy, ca. 1770. Image via Wikimedia Commons.
Thomas Lawrence, Pinkie, 1794. Image via Wikimedia Commons.
In Apariciones, Caycedo meditates on the significance of her own labor within this haunted space, and also alters our readings of the collections with her disruptions. When the dancers shudder and quake next to the gorgeously bound books, we worry about what those publicationsâ covers might contain. And when Caycedo features two women embracing in the gardens while draped with a fishing net, we can fret over several overlapping problems at the same timeâthe exclusion of queer people from American history and the dilemma of water inequality in a drought-ridden state.
Caycedoâs second contribution is a three-panel screen, entitled To walk in the present looking forward towards the past, carrying the future on our back / Caminar por el presente mirando de frente hacia el pasado, cargando el futuro en nuestra espalda. Here, Caycedo creates a new and necessary archive through a collage of photographs and clippings that she has glued to the screenâs wood surfaces. Scanning this album, we find largely black-and-white portraits of black people, Native Americans, and Mexican folks who pose for family portraits, submit to 19th-century taxonomist-racists, or vogue in fancy likenesses that show off their cool clothes.
Mario Ybarra Jr., Itâs Okay 2 Slay, 2018. Courtesy of the artist.
The late photographer Laura Aguilarâs work looms large in To walk in the present, as the collage includes several images from her 1990s âNature Self Portraitâ and âClothed/Unclothedâ series. âNature Self Portraitâ reveals the nude and large-bodied Aguilar draping herself over boulders in the Southern California desert. Aguilar died of complications of diabetes in 2018; Caycedoâs use of her work makes it clear that Aguilarâs legacy provided the inspiration for Apariciones.
The photograph included from Aguilarâs âClothed/Unclothedâ series depicts the photographer Willie Middlebrook embracing his sons. Aguilar found much creative and emotional support in her friendship with Middlebrook, who lent her equipment and encouraged her vision. âClothed/Unclothed,â then, offers a glimpse into the sort of artistic family tree that otherwise finds zero expression in the Huntingtonâs exclusionary archives.
Albrecht DĂźrer, Knight, death, and the devil, 1513. Courtesy of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens.
Mario Ybarra Jr., In The Beginning, 2018. Courtesy of the artist.
Mario Ybarra Jr., who grew up in Wilmington, a blue-collar neighborhood by the Los Angeles harbor, also reworks the Huntingtonâs splendors. His series of drawings cast Albrecht DĂźrer and the anonymous European geniuses who illuminated early modern manuscripts as harbingers of contemporary Latinx mythmaking. Ybarra places his intricate drawings next to a 16th-century Venetian illumination of a ferocious undine about to strike down an aged Neptune and a 1513 DĂźrer etching of a sword-bearing knight riding upon a steed. Ybarraâs work echoes these Renaissance marvels, but adds in hip-hop references, saturated color, cartoons, and brown pride. Ybarra reconfigures a Book of Hoursâs careful calligraphy in In the Beginning, an abecedarium inscribed in a mash-up of Flintstones-meets-Gothic font and foliated by pen-and-inks of Gizmo from Gremlins and Disneyâs Mickey Mouse. And in Itâs Okay 2 Slay, Ybarra puts DĂźrerâs knightâs sword in a brown hand and surrounds it with a royal crown, a skull-and-crossbones, and indecipherable neon tags.
Together, Caycedoâs and Ybarraâs art reimagines the Huntington as a site of hidden history and necessary accountability. Caycedo has said that she regards her artistic process as ârhizomaticââthat is, as one that branches out in a network of roots and tendrils. In this way, both her and Ybarraâs work at the Huntington evokes the writings of Simone Weil, the 20th-century theologian, anarchist, and theorist of displacement. In Weilâs book The Need for Roots (1949), she observed that âto be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul.â âRituals of Engagement and Laborâ allows us to contemplate the difficult question of how people of color can fulfill this need within an inheritance of dispossession. By seeding the Huntington with their labor, the artists plant an unthemed garden that spreads wide and deep throughout the Huntingonâs lavish façades and treasuries, which once only magnified white supremacy and its crimes.
