"Driver's Seat" is a 1978 song by British band Sniff 'n' the Tears, appearing on their debut album Fickle Heart. The band is considered a one-hit wonder, as "Driver's Seat" was their only hit, except in the Netherlands, where they had a second top 40 single.

The song's genesis dates back to 1973, when Sniff 'n' The Tears recorded a demo tape for a French record label with singer/guitarist Paul Roberts, guitarists Laurence "Loz" Netto and Mick Dyche, and bassist Chris Birkin. The drummer Luigi Salvoni was a new addition after the breakup of Moon, the band he had been in. They bought the demo tape and signed to the small Chiswick label in 1977. Keith Miller played the Moog solo and also toured America with the band. Noel McCalla sang backing vocals.

According to Paul Roberts, "Driver's Seat" is not about driving, but rather about "fragmented, conflicting thoughts and feelings that might follow the breakdown of a relationship." One of the key decisions when arranging the song was to start with the drums and gradually introduce other instruments.

"Driver's Seat" reached number 15 on the US Billboard Pop Singles Chart[4] in the fall of 1979 and reached the top 10 in the Netherlands in November 1980.

In Canada, the song peaked at number 17 and was in the RPM Top 100 for 21 weeks.

A 12-inch version was released on A Best of Sniff 'n' the Tears in 1991. The song appeared at number one on the Dutch Top 40 charts that same year because it was used in a Pioneer commercial.

Today we remember the passing of Glenn Cornick who Died: August 28, 2014 in Hilo, Hawaii

Glenn Douglas Barnard Cornick was a British bass player, best known as a founding member of the British band Jethro Tull. Rolling Stone has called his playing with Tull as "stout, nimble underpinning, the vital half of a blues-ribbed, jazz-fluent rhythm section".

Cornick toured and recorded with Jethro Tull from late 1967 to late 1970. He played in the three first studio albums of the band, This Was, Stand Up and Benefit, playing an important role in the arranging of the music, being one of the few members of Jethro Tull with some musical learning. During his time with the band, he established his stage persona, with strong virtuosity and remarkable music competence. One of the few live recordings of Cornick with Jethro Tull is the video Nothing is Easy - Live at the Isle of Wight, recorded in 1970 and released in 2004. He was fired from the band, mainly because his lifestyle was more inclined to partying than the other band members.

After leaving Jethro Tull, Cornick played as a session musician for Leigh Stephens on his 1971 album And a Cast of Thousands. In the same year, he formed Wild Turkey, initially with: Graham Williams (guitar), Alan 'Tweke' Lewis (guitar), John "Pugwash" Weathers (ex-Pete Brown & Piblokto! and Gentle Giant) on drums and Gary Pickford-Hopkins (ex-Eyes of Blue) on vocals; but Weathers and Williams left to join Graham Bond's Magick before Wild Turkey recorded any material - soon after, Weathers joined the progressive rock band Gentle Giant. They were replaced by Jon Blackmore (guitar and vocals) and Jeff Jones (ex-Man) (drums) who joined Cornick, Tweke and Pickford-Hopkins to record Wild Turkey's first album Battle Hymn - which only reached number 193 in The Billboard 200. The band released a second album, Turkey, before splitting up.

Cornick then joined the German band Karthago, with whom he recorded just one album, Rock'N'Roll Testament, before leaving and moving to Los Angeles to form Paris, with guitarist Bob Welch (ex-Fleetwood Mac) and Thom Mooney (ex-Nazz) on drums. They recorded an eponymous album, Paris, in 1975, before Mooney was replaced by Hunt Sales (ex-Todd Rundgren's Runt), and in 1976 recorded Big Towne, 2061. Paris disbanded in 1977.

In 1996, Cornick participated in a Jethro Tull tribute, called To Cry You A Song - A collection of Tull Tales, playing on the songs "Nothing Is Easy", "To Cry You a Song", "New Day Yesterday", "Teacher" and "Living in the Past", together with the former Tull members Clive Bunker, Mick Abrahams and Dave Pegg, together with John Wetton, Glenn Hughes, Robby Steinhardt, Wolfstone and Keith Emerson.

In the early 2000s two live Wild Turkey albums were released, Final Performance (2000) and Live In Edinburgh (2001) and in 2006 the fourth studio album, You and Me in the Jungle, was recorded by Cornick, Pickford-Hopkins, Dyche and Gurl, who had all appeared on earlier albums. They were joined by Graham Williams (ex-Racing Cars) (guitar), John "Pugwash" Weathers (percussion) and former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker, all of whom had played with Cornick in the past.

Cornick died in Hilo, Hawaii, on 28 August 2014 due to congestive heart failure. His death was widely reported in the media and specialist publications like the Prog Magazine and Rolling Stone. Jethro Tull bandmate Ian Anderson paid tribute on the band's website. Martin Barre also lamented the death of his friend.

CASSINI'S GRAND FINALE

CASSINI’S GRAND FINALE is a short film I had the great honor to produce for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) about the spectacular ending of the Cassini/Huygens mission to Saturn. It is meant as an inspirational and informative piece about what happens in the last months of the mission, and as a celebration of all that this historic spacecraft has achieved.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft (launched in 1997) has been in orbit around Saturn since 2004 exploring the giant planet, its spectacular system of rings and moons. Cassini was also carrying with it the European Huygens Probe which was dispatched after arrival and successfully landed on the moon Titan, becoming the first human made craft to land on a surface in the outer solar system. In 2017 - after more than a decade of bringing home remarkably successful scientific achievements, discoveries and a treasury of gorgeous photos – the spacecraft is running out of fuel to maneuver. In order to protect the moons Enceladus and Titan, and their potentially life-bearing sub surface oceans, from possible contamination in the unlikely event of a future collision, it has been decided to take Cassini permanently out of service. This is done by crashing the spacecraft into the atmosphere of Saturn - but not without doing some amazing science on the way. 22 times, Cassini dives through previously unexplored gap between Saturn and its rings, collecting new data on the mass of the rings (used to help determine their age), measurements of Saturn’s gravity and magnetic fields (used to help understanding its internal structure) and sending home stunning views of Saturn’s clouds and the rings – seen from a closer range than ever before. Even up until the very end, Cassini will bring home data, as it tastes the atmosphere of Saturn, just minutes before burning up and becoming part of the planet itself.

It has been an unprecedented honor for me to get to do this film. Being a passionate enthusiast of planetary science, Cassini is the one mission - more than any other – to define my interest in the field, as I’ve had the pleasure to follow its success, from start to end, for a major part of my adult life.

The Premier League is notorious for its short temper when managers are concerned, and in the modern day, no job is entirely safe. Even Claudio Ranieri guiding Leicester City to a remarkable 5,000/1 title was not enough to stay in command when results started to dip, so what hope is there for managers that never get going? Mark Hughes indeed fell in the latter category, after taking just one win from a possible 15 in the Premier League, leaving the board hot under the collar having suffered a similar fate when Mauricio Pellegrino was in charge. Times may now change on the south coast with former RB Leipzig man Ralph Hasenhuttl, and should results turn around at St Mary’s other clubs may be forced to change their leadership, too. Since the turn of the century, there have been 114 managerial changes, averaging 6.3 a year. That figure is on the rise, as well, with a record ten managers released throughout last season – starting with Crystal Palace’s Frank de Boer, an early casualty in September. Only once had there been as many managers’ contracts torn up, after Sunderland got the ball rolling four seasons earlier – the north east club handed Paolo Di Canio his P45 a month into the campaign. Even when the top flight consisted of 22 sides the highest tally was nine, set in 1994-95. Premier League clubs are now showing time and time again that a manager can be a tool to get them on the ladder, but another man will guide them to success. Everton for one are hoping the short-term appointment of Sam Allardyce, followed by Marco Silva, will be the right decision. This season has already seen two managers forced out the door, with Hughes following Fulham’s Slavisa Jokanovic to the job centre. Should no other side feel the urge to change things up, it would be a record in its own right – so far the lowest tally has been three, but that was more than a decade ago – the 2005-06 season saw Alain Perrin, Graeme Souness and Mick McCarthy sacked. On current odds, via The Sack Race, Manchester United’s coach of the past two-and-a-half years is the leading contender to face the chop, with Bet Victor staking Jose Mourinho at 6/4. Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace future is nearly in as much doubt, with odds of his dismissal coming in at 6/1, matching Burnley’s long-standing hero, Sean Dyche. The trio make up the favourites with more than one-third of the season gone, as results for their respective sides are well below expectations. Manchester United, for one, are closer to the bottom three than they are their local rivals. As for Burnley, they reside in the relegation zone just months after qualifying for the Europa League. Despite the bookies placing Mourinho, Hodgson and Dyche as favourites to go, they could all be argued as safe in their jobs – even if some fans would like a change. Manchester United are already out of contention for the Premier League, so a change in management would not affect those standings. Instead, it will cost the club an expected £12million to terminate his deal. While at Burnley, the Clarets have seen highs and lows under the leadership of Dyche, topped by qualifying for Europe. He also secured their promotion from the Championship twice, even if they were relegated back down to the second tier in 2015-16. The same goes for the likes of Huddersfield and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who adore their managers. West Ham, too, could get itchy feet, but Manuel Pellegrini is a marquee name in the dugout that would be hard to replace. It is the big question facing millions of football fans every weekend: who should be included in the fantasy team for the next round of matches?

We’ve delved into the stats and the history books to give you some tips on who is likely to perform well – and who might be worth leaving out.

A rare weekend to swerve Man City’s attackers?

Manchester City v Huddersfield – a chance for the home side to run riot, right?

Well, perhaps not. Huddersfield might have conceded more goals than two of the relegated teams last season, but they had a strangely stunting effect on the eventual champions.

City scored in 17 of their 18 Premier League home games last term – a total of 47 goals – but they could not do so against the Terriers in May[1] (although they had secured the title by that stage).

Pep Guardiola’s side also found their away game against the same opponents a struggle earlier in the season, trailing at half-time before registering an 84th-minute winner.[2]

In total, City had only seven shots on target in 180 minutes against Huddersfield in 2017-18, fewer than against any other side.

Going back a bit further to when Huddersfield were in the Championship in 2016-17, they again frustrated City, this time forcing a replay thanks to a 0-0 draw[3] in the FA Cup at the John Smith’s Stadium.

On Sunday, City will have to do without the injured Kevin de Bruyne, meaning picking their attacking players might not be the no-brainer you’d have thought it would be.

Load up on Burnley defenders

For a team renowned for their solidity at the back last season (the sixth-best defensive record in the division with 39 goals conceded, one more than Liverpool and Chelsea and 12 fewer than Arsenal), it is surprising that Burnley have kept only one clean sheet in their past 10 home league games.

That might have seen a move away from having the likes of Ben Mee and James Tarkowski in your fantasy teams, but this could be a good week to get them back in.

Since Joe Hart’s arrival, the Clarets have not conceded a goal – three shutouts in a row totalling 300 minutes of playing time – and they are coming up against a side who just cannot score on their travels.

In fact, Watford have not scored in any of their seven away league games since Javi Gracia took over as manager, the joint longest wait a new Premier League boss has had for his side to score on the road (equal with Billy Davies and Mick McCarthy).

Add in the fact that Watford have not won any of their past 10 away games against Burnley – failing to score in 349 minutes of action at Turf Moor – and the signs look good for Sean Dyche’s back four and keeper to claim plenty of points.

Milner the creator

James Milner is noted for his understated persona, the Liverpool midfielder rarely hitting the headlines.

But the former England international did make his mark in the Champions League last season with one particular stat.

He provided eight assists – more than Cristiano Ronaldo, more than Lionel Messi. More, in fact, than anyone else in the competition, and all from a midfield role which often means he finds himself in deeper positions than many of Europe’s premier chance creators.

Was that statistic a one-off? Quite possibly not, if the opening day of the Premier League season was anything to go by.

The 32-year-old was again in fine creative form. His expected assists tally – the number of assists he should have had if the chances he created had been converted – was 1.15[5] in the 4-0 win over West Ham.[6] No other player in the top flight managed more than 1.00.

Yes to Spurs but no to Kane?

Everyone knows Harry Kane has never scored a Premier League goal in August[7] – a run of 14 games, 988 minutes and 46 shots that surely has to end sooner rather than later.

His previously outstanding record in London derbies has also suffered of late – after a sequence of 17 goals in 16 matches against other clubs from the capital, he has scored a relatively paltry five in his past 13.

Whether you back Kane to break his August duck or not in Saturday’s game against Fulham, Spurs players certainly look to be a sensible inclusion in your fantasy team this week.

Put simply, Spurs always beat promoted clubs at home. They have done exactly that on the past 18 occasions they have met a new top-flight team.

So if you want to look for non-Kane options, then perhaps Hugo Lloris would be your best bet.

Tottenham have conceded only once in their past nine games against promoted teams and seven in that longer sequence of 18 games.

Added to that, Fulham failed to find the net in their opening game against Crystal Palace, with Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright saying their attacking play needed to be “a lot quicker”[8] at Premier League level.

Newcastle’s Ritch vein of form

Got any Cardiff players in your squad? Might be time to take them out sharpish.

The Bluebirds play Newcastle this weekend – and have lost their past 10 meetings with the Magpies.

In fact, Newcastle are on their longest winning run in the league against one opponent, and manager Rafael Benitez has never lost to Saturday’s counterpart Neil Warnock.

All that points to the inclusion of a Newcastle player or two in your fantasy line-up. But who?

Winger Matt Ritchie could be a good shout – he’s had a hand in three goals in his past two league games against Cardiff, while Christian Atsu has netted in his previous two matches against them.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft (launched in 1997) has been in orbit around Saturn since 2004 exploring the giant planet, its spectacular system of rings and moons. Cassini was also carrying with it the European Huygens Probe which was dispatched after arrival and successfully landed on the moon Titan, becoming the first human made craft to land on a surface in the outer solar system. In 2017 - after more than a decade of bringing home remarkably successful scientific achievements, discoveries and a treasury of gorgeous photos – the spacecraft is running out of fuel to maneuver. In order to protect the moons Enceladus and Titan, and their potentially life-bearing sub surface oceans, from possible contamination in the unlikely event of a future collision, it has been decided to take Cassini permanently out of service. This is done by crashing the spacecraft into the atmosphere of Saturn - but not without doing some amazing science on the way. 22 times, Cassini dives through previously unexplored gap between Saturn and its rings, collecting new data on the mass of the rings (used to help determine their age), measurements of Saturn’s gravity and magnetic fields (used to help understanding its internal structure) and sending home stunning views of Saturn’s clouds and the rings – seen from a closer range than ever before. CASSINI’S GRAND FINALE is a short film I had the great honor to produce for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) about the spectacular ending of the Cassini/Huygens mission to Saturn. It is meant as an inspirational and informative piece about what happens in the last months of the mission, and as a celebration of all that this historic spacecraft has achieved.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft (launched in 1997) has been in orbit around Saturn since 2004 exploring the giant planet, its spectacular system of rings and moons. Cassini was also carrying with it the European Huygens Probe which was dispatched after arrival and successfully landed on the moon Titan, becoming the first human made craft to land on a surface in the outer solar system. In 2017 - after more than a decade of bringing home remarkably successful scientific achievements, discoveries and a treasury of gorgeous photos – the spacecraft is running out of fuel to maneuver. In order to protect the moons Enceladus and Titan, and their potentially life-bearing sub surface oceans, from possible contamination in the unlikely event of a future collision, it has been decided to take Cassini permanently out of service. This is done by crashing the spacecraft into the atmosphere of Saturn - but not without doing some amazing science on the way. 22 times, Cassini dives through previously unexplored gap between Saturn and its rings, collecting new data on the mass of the rings (used to help determine their age), measurements of Saturn’s gravity and magnetic fields (used to help understanding its internal structure) and sending home stunning views of Saturn’s clouds and the rings – seen from a closer range than ever before.
