Top 5 memoirs to inspire your own creative projects:
1. Just Kids by Patti Smith This book is a poetic masterpiece. It is a glimpse into a chapter of supreme creativity and artistic collaboration. Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith were fearless friends who helped each other develop their unique styles. You can imagine yourself sitting side by side with them in their room in the Chelsea Hotel while reading her vividly beautiful depictions. And it may even inspire you to make the most fearless work you've made yet! Thank you, Patti!

2. How to Grow Up by Michelle Tea Michelle Tea has a distinct style and hilarious perspective on her life thus far and all the changes she has made to become who she. I enjoyed every page of this book and took it everywhere I went. On a day I was feeling especially alone visiting the conservative neighborhood my parents live in, the cover inspired a lovely queer couple to stop and talk to me saying they needed this book with a sarcastic yet knowing glance! And this is so what would happen when you are reading a Michelle Tea book. She inspires inclusivity, queer community building, celebration, and self love! And becasue of that, I got to share one of my favorite things about her; her part in the creation of Drag Queen Story Hour at libraries everywhere! The couple loved it! Michelle reminds us that the world needs all of our stories and to be brave and tell them today! Thanks Michelle!

3. Drawing Blood by Molly Crabapple If you are craving travel without even leaving your home, this is the book for you. I was magically transported through Molly's colorful descriptions and details. And did I mention this book has pictures! Molly draws gorgeous illustrations and they are paired throughout the text in the most intreging ways. Go pick up this book at your local bookstore and share it with others. Molly's life is courageous and kind and it will have you making friends with your neighbors, going to protests together, and making your own advocacy art through her inspiration! You are one person but you can make a major difference in your own way and that is powerful. Thank you, Molly!

4. Wildflower by Drew Barrymore Wildflower is a collection of beautiful personal essays. I've been a life-long fan of Drew's work and this book is no exception. I bought the audiobook in addition to the hardcover at her book signing and am enamored by the writing she put together in this compilation! It has everything you want in a book; hilarity, sweetness, adventure, and heart. I even found out we have a soul connection in both being obsessed with Lake Winnipesauke! I spent nine life-changing summers on that lake at camp, some of which were the same years in the 90's she did. In another wonderfully watery story, Drew dives off the deck of a cruise ship into the open ocean and it's a must read! All of the essays speak to growth she has experienced in her life and I am so grateful she chose to share them so that we may be inspired to engage in similar ambitious pursuits. Thanks Drew!

5. Waking the Witch by Pam Grossman Pam's thoughtful memoir is wonderfully written and in addition to giving you a glimpse into the history of the archetype of the witch, it connected some dots for me. Pam's podcast, The Witch Wave, helped inspire a feminist roadtrip I took in 2019, the same year the book came out. I made my way to the home of Matilda Joslyn Gage, an abolitionist and stop on the Underground Railroad in Fayetteville, NY. Her nephew, L. Frank Baum wrote Wizard of Oz and she is thought to have been an inspiration for the character of Glinda the Good Witch! Waking the Witch is a magical read and I enjoyed the parts of Pam's story that were set in suburban New Jersey since this is also where i hail from. Hearing about her baby witch visits to the mall and later exploration of New York City transported me back to similarly formative times in my own life. Thank you, Pam!

Hi. You’ve met me, so you know that when I started pulling books for an International Women’s Day stack, things got out of hand VERY quickly. So I decided to go for a “Women of Science Fiction and Fantasy” stack as something a LITTLE more reasonable. All of these are books that I have read and loved, and would recommend (though some with reservations.) As usual, I limited myself to one book per author, and spent many moments anguishing over books not on my shelves for various reasons, plus which books with fantasy elements qualify as “fantasy.” I am already mad about books accidentally left out, but I have also already retaken this stack once. . . Anyway, happy International Women’s Day! Read some women-imagined futures! . . #bookstack #bookgeek #sff #tanithlee #octaviabutler #ldlewis #ritaindiana #nnediokorafor #sarahhall #nickydrayden #nkjemisin #gwillowwilson #conniewillis #ursulakleguin #joannaruss #michelletea #csecooney #catherynnemvalente #sachskraborty #marydoriarussell https://www.instagram.com/p/B9esR4Jg7Fd/?igshid=1qq4lbs7d09xn

Thoroughly enjoying this book, I've been slow reading it since I only pick it up in the car while I wait for the kiddo to get out of school (not while I drive). I love her style and perspective on the cards, reminds me a lot of my other favorite book, Creative Tarot. Highly recommend this book! #moderntarot #michelletea #tarot

So I’ve gotten a stack of metaphysical/witchy books recently. And I’m really looking forward to reading them and learning new things. And they all have beautiful covers, which isn’t important but sure is a plus. ✨ #pastelspells by #roseorriculum ✨ #starpower by #vanessamontgomery ✨ #craft by #gabrielaherstik ✨ #moderntarot by #michelletea ✨ #wicca by #harmonynice ✨ #books #newbooks #witchybooks #wicca #witch #witchythings #tarot #astrology #crystals #witchcraft #stackofbooks #magick #magickthings https://www.instagram.com/p/BsAwcu2nv0y/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xikl2w80nkbz

Book 32 in #52booksin52weeks is #BlackWave by #michelletea published by @feministpress! This one is pre-dystopic with amazing visual language. A bit too meta for me, but worth it for the Trash facial paragraph. . ⭐⭐ . Michelle is a writer in 90’s San Francisco. She’s published one book, but has struggled to find her stride and has taken up a recreational drug habit and a string of casual relationships. Trying for a fresh start she moves so LA, just in time for the end of the world. . The language in Black Wave is wonderful - the vivid turns of phrase were a pleasure to read (my favorite, of course, was the Trash facial.) However, the plot was sort of meta at times and the timeline unclear. Both the author name and protagonist name is Michelle, and in the end the protagonist writes a book named Black Wave? Sometimes it felt like she was talking to you, the reader, but others it felt like a narrator. The first few chapters of part 2 I was so confused as to what was happening. But the language was solid and some of the social critiques were on the nose - the explanation of gentrification early on was too true. . #predystopia #lgbtq #sanfrancisco #albion #90sNostalgia https://ift.tt/2xF157r

Some of my favorite LGBTQ fiction. Definitely not all of it — as there are so many I’ve loved that I checked out from the library or lent my copy to. Plus I limited myself to one per author, and #ownvoices so far as I know. Most of these I’ve posted about before (some over and over and over), but that’s what you get when it’s a face roundup. Have you loved any of these? What’s your favorite queer fiction? . . #lgbtq🌈 #lgbtqfiction #rachelpollack #thebeatrixgates #labastarda #trifoniamelibeaobono #tentacle #ritaindiana #revenantgun #yoonhalee #jonnyappleseed #joshuawhitehead #writtenonthebody #jeanettewinterson #lifemask #emmadonaghue #michelletea #blackwave #alicewalker #thecolorpurple #coolforyou #eileenmyles https://www.instagram.com/p/ByYKn8jAuLG/?igshid=1gpovoelpiik6

"There was no end to the misperceptions about [meditation]... 'Oh I can't #meditate; my mind just jumps all over the place; I really can't do it.' Uh, that's sort of the point of meditation. You're not special. Everyone's mind jumps all over the place--that's what a mind does. Meditating doesn't make that go away--well, maybe it does for super awesome meditators who have stuck with it for a decade, but for the average monkey-brained human who sits down and tries to be silent and still for a moment, the whole experience is about sitting there with your crazy jumping thoughts. You sit and observe your jumbled inner narrative--'hmm, what word should I get tattooed on my neck? I should write a television show! I wonder how so-and-so is doing in the wake of her failed marriage; I should call her--would that be awkward? Speaking of awkward, I can't believe I said that thing to that man about his artificial eye five years ago; God, that was so shitty of me--should I apologize? huh, I know who should apologize--my ex! I've done everything for him and he's done nothing for me!' And as you observe this circus, your perception of your own thoughts begins to change... "Sitting in meditation, you get to understand the nature of the mind in general, and your own in particular... and in discovering this, you acquaint yourself with the mind behind your mind, the one that can tame the chatter... and return you to the present." How to Grow Up: a Memoir by #MichelleTea #morningmotivation for #meditation #consciousliving #beingisinthebuilding #exultation #expansion (at Exultation)
