by Sabrina Soffer
In classes where I was often the only pro-Israel student, and sometimes the only Jew, I chose to write papers and deliver presentations about Israel and Jewish life. In my Frankfurt School course, my final project Israel on the Utopian Horizon analyzed the Israeli Protest Movement through philosophies of Theodor Adorno, Ernst Bloch, Martin Buber, and José Munoz. Aside from quenching my personal academic interests, the project demonstrated how Israel embodies the liberal Frankfurt School principles that my non/anti-Zionist peers admired.
Another project in my course “Power,” used Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish to describe how universities have become like “Intellectual Panopticons” that lead to “Self-Censorship.” The panopticon concept represents a prison-like mechanism where constant surveillance enforces social control. Using Jonanthan Haidt & Greg Lukianoff’s The Coddling of the American Mind and drawing from my personal experience, I argued for reimagining individualism as responsible citizenship — expressing disagreement respectfully and assertively, even if standing alone. Once again, I demonstrated how many of my peers were misusing and abusing Progressive ideals against those holding political differences.
Unsurprisingly, those words I had penned during my sophomore year would become a reality. Despite widespread opposition, I formed the GW Student Association Antisemitism Task Force in early 2023. Approaching adversarial audiences by altering my communication style to make statements appear uncontroversial — and flipping my opposition’s arguments against them — provided instrumental lessons in persuasion. I even invited members of SJP and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), who pledged anti-normalization, on board; they could no longer delegitimize my initiative by tarnishing me on the basis of my Israeli, Jewish, and American identities.
I could not have achieved these goals on my own. Outreach is a key ingredient in the recipe to success. The advice from public intellectuals like Einat Wilf, legal powerhouses like the Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, and other Jewish organizations like AMCHA were instrumental to formulating my approach. GW Hillel placed QR codes around their building and sent emails to Jewish community members to make public comments at the Student Senate meeting where a vote on creating an antisemitism task force would take place. Over 30 students showed up, and public comments that night ran for nearly an hour. In the end, the task force passed unanimously.
While the task force was dismantled by the following year’s Student Association president, its work has continued. Since the October 7th terror attacks, my peers and I consistently meet with professors and administrators to understand university conduct policies; we have learned to convey our perspectives to administrators who tread to take action. We’ve examined state and Federal law pertaining to Title VI, boycotts, and more. We engage with policy makers on the state and Federal level. We organize and advertise GW and DC-wide events. Most importantly, we have learned to engage substantively with prevalent and opposing views, block out hate, and hold our heads high with robust Jewish spirit.
My story is much less about what I accomplished, but the knowledge, skills, and strong sense of character I gained. Understanding your rights and learning to articulate information to diverse audiences are as important in school as in relationships and the workplace.

A group of illegal immigrants from South America was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly using construction crew disguises, blowtorches and cellphone jammers, among other "sophisticated tactics," to rob banks across multiple states of more than $4 million in cash, according to federal prosecutors.
The crew, made up mostly of Chilean nationals, targeted more than 29 banks and credit unions throughout California, Oregon and Washington between May and October, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
According to court documents, the group mapped out ATMs in "vulnerable locations," then rented short-term vacation properties nearby and used cars they rented on the "black market."
Officials said nine of the 11 individuals charged were arrested last week, and two more were arrested in Washington Oct. 30.
In one incident, prosecutors said the alleged thieves scouted a business next to a Wells Fargo in Modesto, California, broke in at night and cut a hole in the wall to access the bank's ATMs.
Authorities released pictures of the alleged bank robbery bandits dressed as construction crew workers sporting hard hats, surgical masks and high-visibility safety vests.
In another incident, prosecutors allege, the bandits hit a bank in Fall River Mills, California. They allegedly used blowtorches, saws and other power tools to access the bank and its interior vaults. The alleged bandits were interrupted and took off, leaving some of their tools behind.
Authorities said they found hundreds of pounds of robbery tools, disguises, fake identification documents and more than $100,000 in cash at several short-term rental properties in Oregon and Washington.
Talbert named the illegal immigrants as:
Alex Moyano Morales, 24, of Chile
Maite Celis Silva, 26, of Chile
Erik Osorio Olivarez, 20, of Chile
Pablo Valdez Rodriguez, 36, a Chilean national
Rosa Bastias Serra, 42, of Chile
Camilo Sepulveda Guzman, 31, of Peru
Bassil Dacosta Frias, 34, of Venezuela
Camilo Alarcon Alarcon, 23, of Chile
Michelle Parada Munoz, 21, of Chile
Alvaro Lagos Mieres, 44, of Chile
Humberto Jimenez Moreno, 45, of Chile
Talbert added that all the defendants are charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery, while Moyano, Celis, Osorio, Valdez, Bastias, Sepulveda, Lagos and Jimenez are additionally charged with bank robbery.
Court documents allege the defendants targeted banks and ATMs throughout the Eastern District of California, which included Fresno, Auburn, Merced, Clovis, Modesto, Roseville, Rocklin, Yuba City and Fall River Mills. They also targeted banks and ATMs in Oregon, Washington and the Los Angeles area.
If convicted, Talbert said, the defendants face a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison for bank robbery and five years in prison for conspiracy to commit bank robbery.

Did Jack told other members about Lalivina (I'm sorry if I said her name wrong)?
Honestly Anon, I also have a stroke every time I try to spell her name too.
Spoilers (of course) and TW for SA under the cut.
At first, no. Jack didn't tell anyone about Lavinia.
Let's be honest: There's a lot of stigma surrounding SA as a whole, but even more so when it comes to male victims of SA. So, it took Jack a while to get the confidence to tell the rest of the Bureau what happened to him.
Of course, Michelle and the player were the first to know, but then he slowly started to open up to other members of the Bureau.
Actually, as an extra little headcanon, Michelle was SA'd by Ignacio Munoz in the past when she worked with him for Sombra. She also tells him about this encounter, which is one of the reasons Jack acts angrily towards him when they meet. They do bond a bit over their shared trauma.

Un Nardò distratto strappa un punto a Ischia.
ISCHIA - NARDO' 2-2
Goalscorers: 1' Giacomarro, 22' Quirino, 33' D'Anna, 45' Milli.
ISCHIA: Iannaccone; Florio, Chiariello, Buono, Tuninetti (89' Trofa), Mattera Giuseppe, Ballirano, Giacomarro (73' Montanino), Quirino (46' P. D'Anna), Talamo, Maiorano (46' Giovanni Mattera).
Reserve: Zandri, Patalano, Castagna, Gadalera, Favetta.
Coach: Buonocore
NARDO': (5-3-2) De Luca; Muňoz, Davì, Pinto (60' Fornasier), Calderoni, De Crescenzo (60' Montagna); Milli (67' Orlando), Vrdoljak, Correnti (67' Milli); D'Anna Simone, Maletic.
Reserve: Galli, Delvino, Gassama, Mazzotta, Addae.
Coach: Fabio De Sanzo
Arbitro: Michele Piccolo di Pordenone
Assistenti: Michele Nappi di Latina e Piergiorgio Stotani di Viterbo.
Ammoniti: Correnti, De Crescenzo (N) Giacomarro e Tuninetti (I).
Quirino ruba palla in uno scambio fiacco, e batte De Luca in uscita. 2-0.
Ischia in 10.
Chiude Fornasier.
Nardò in difficoltà. L'Ischia ci crede.
