Dorrance and her company are billed as innovators in tap, and some of them have trained with the greats. But their work is essentially genre-less. They incorporate rhythm and Broadway tap styles, but adhere to neither; they bring in breaking, B-girling and postmodern, and improvise as the spirit moves them. These humans, dancers if you will, make you feel what they feel, take you for an irresistible ride, connect with each other and the audience as marvelous, imperfect, yearning, hopeful, happy, confused, creative beings.

La compagnie Dorrance revisite l'univers des claquettes - cet art typiquement américain qui a perdu un peu d'actualité. Et elle en fait un spectacle vibrant et contemporain, souvent drôle, où musique, danse et art dramatique se côtoient avec bonheur. Les chorégraphies sont enjouées et surprenantes, en particulier dans sa version du 'Nutcracker' (Casse-noisette de Tchaikovsky). Un show enthousiasmant où l'âme exploratrice et généreuse de Michelle Dorrance trouve une belle expression, elle qui dit que "le futur des claquettes est sans limites".

Vintage woso part 2:

Let’s take it wayyyy way back here with “China ‘91 The First Champions”, to the tourney that started it all. It was the first *official* world championship and most women’s teams were only about 10-15 years into existence at that point. It was the predecessor to all the international woso we enjoy today. The video also has a little bit of woso history and a lot of footage from the host cities itself woven in, but it adds to the charm.

This tournament is FULL of forgotten goats. I’ll touch on them in depth at a later point, but if you’re not familiar with Carolina Morace and Heidi Mohr, take a sec to do so, your jaw will drop at their stats. This video briefly introduces them and has some of their highlights including Morace’s hat trick, which was the first ever at a wwc. It also showcases Akers’ five goals against Chinese Taipei which surprisingly weren’t cheap (27:55 🤯).

The US was stacked. Anson Dorrance (love him or hate him after the allegations) was at the helm with DiCicco and Lauren Gregg as his assistants. The UNC dynasty he built yielded such a great farm system for the US to dip from, with NINE of the team being Tar Heels. It was a similar story for 95 and 99 with 7 and 8 Tar Heels on each roster respectively. The impact UNC had on the uswnt and international soccer can’t be understated. It was basically UNC vs the world for a solid 12 years. The piece de resistance however, was the “triple edged sword” as it was called, of Michelle Akers, April Heinrichs, and Carin Gabarra (Jennings). Akers is a name that speaks for itself, she won the golden boot of the tournament with 10 goals, and was pivotal through 99. Heinrich’s has a name recognized due to her illustrious time at UNC and more recently, as a uswnt coach. Gabarra however, has gotten lost in the history books and holy crap. She won the golden ball and silver boot at the tourney, including a hat trick against Germany in the semis. They called her crazy legs... do yourself a favor and go to 14:41. FILTHY! People rightfully talk about Tobin breaking ankles, but good lord Gabarra was the maestro of her day.

China was a fantastic choice as the First Nation to hold a women’s World Cup. Letttts not look too deeply on the how, but these women, in 1991 (!!!) played to packed stadiums, and the pagentry hasn’t been replicated at a wwc since. The opening ceremony with the Phoenix? Just lovely. Enjoy!

Dorrance, as usual, is all goofy angles, elbows and knees flying as she brings out a symphony of sounds with her feet. Her specialty is the varied texture of her sound, combined with the lanky exuberance of her body.
