The relevance of Star Wars to pop culture depictions of archives [Part 3]

Continued from part 2

The entry for Nu on page 87 of Amy Ratcliffe's Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy, which summarizes her role in Star Wars.

What McGrath is saying echoes what is stated elsewhere in the archival literature: that Nu wore "a traditional, conservative robe" and that the archives "even resembled a library, with stacks of glowing records lined up on the shelves," while stating that she exhibited some qualities of stereotypes usually applied to librarians. The same article in Archivaria notes that Obi-Wan did not follow the advice of the archivist, going on a search for the planet, while Nu "with all of her extensive knowledge, was quickly forgotten" in the film. [10] Additional literature noted the similarities between the BIONICLE universe made by Lego, with a Great Archives in Onu-Metru. This series even had a character named Tehutti who is said to have spent all his time within the archives! I was a big fan and user of LEGO for years and never remember this, or how central this archives is to the universe. [11]

Others have said that Obi-Wan was "put in his place by the lady archivist" (Nu) and summarizes Ketelaar who describes archives as "sites of power". Furthermore, renowned archivist Michelle Caswell in 2020 speech at the Association of Canadian Archivists’ annual conference, made an argument about liberatory memory work, saying that they are not bound to linear time in a "sort of Star Wars out-of-order kind of way". [12] That's just two examples, but there is more in other archival literature. For instance, on pages 22 and 23 of the May 2022 edition of Estudios del Discurso, Nina Hoechtl, a visual artist, curator, teacher and independent researcher at Museo Amparo, noted Attack of the Clones as an example of an archival imaginary, and said that:

The archive is a site that joins various sorts of assumptions about kinds of knowledge –how to store,access, retrieve and re-active them, and what is knowable– that are crucial to the ways people, communities, and societies think about themselves, deal with their pasts, ponder on their presents, and imagine their futures.

Caitlin Patterson of Western Washington University makes one one of the more interesting perspectives about Nu: that she does not "conform to all the standard stereotypes" of archives, describing her as "fierce and imposing," and countering "the image of archivists as shy and retreating", stating that her age "commands more respect than that of the average fictional archivist". She goes onto say that Nu is intelligent and dedicated but not "cloistered or passive", but seems to have a "certain possessiveness of the collections" and states that Nu suggests a "different interpretation of the archivist which...still offers a reasonable explanation of her role". [13]

In conclusion, the cranky archivist I noted at the beginning of this post is dead wrong, and should be a bit ashamed of themselves. Star Wars, and pop culture in general will continue to be relevant to archives, and the profession as a whole, [14] whether we like those depictions or not. As for this blog, I'm going keep posting these articles even if people on /r/archivists, a group of individuals who luckily do not represent the majority of the profession, hate them.

Title:

Building a participatory archive with a suburb - the case study of Kambah, known as a bogan suburb

Abstract:

Participatory appraisal has been discussed amongst archivists for decades. There is literature reporting on experiences in the United Kingdom and the United States but there is limited reportage of the practice of building archives with communities in Australia. In January 2023 a project focused on a low-social capital suburb in Canberra was exhibited. This paper reports back with some insights.

A challenge for participatory appraisal identified through this project was scale – if successful, the volume of content quickly becomes overwhelming. Another challenge is the responsibility that goes with accepting content from contributors. Expectations are set up that the content will be used or shared. And crucially, participation means everyone. Strategies are needed to connect with contributors that goes beyond relationships in easy reach for the archivist based on existing connections. Recognising who is likely to be overlooked and thinking about how the project might connect with the aspirations of those community groups offered a starting point in this project. Demonstrating that those voices are wanted and welcome is another part of the puzzle. Some strategies include partnerships and focusing on community events where there has been broad community participation.

A final lesson comes from social engaged art, a practice that focuses on community participation. This calls on the archivist to recognise their standpoint, the worldview they bring. Our sector has recognised that collections and building them is not neutral. For archivists, there remains much to do to work out how to meaningfully share that power and authority as collections are built.

The paper describes the project and explains these points using examples from the project. 

The scene for this article is set by literature on participatory appraisal from Cook (2011), Bastian and Flinn (2020), Flinn and Sexton (2019) and Huvila (2015) for example, as well as reportage on practice by Caswell  and Mallick (2014), Rolan (2016) and Gibbons (2020) for example. The discussion of standpoint draws on the work of Phillips (2019) on Indigenist standpoint theory and the discussion of socially engaged art draws on the work of Ihlein and Williams (2020), Bourgault (2022) and Thompson (2012).

Review: Okay. Wow. I don’t know how to feel. To many emotions of happiness, relief, grief, anger, sadness, and joy are swimming in my mind right now and I don’t know how to stop it from swirling. Not only is this series my favorite book series I’ve ever read, but the fact I was legit CRYING shocked me because I didn’t realize I was doing it! This book is not necessarily the “ending,” but it’s the ending to something that was brewing for awhile. I’m trying not to put spoilers, but it’s hard for me to do so and explain how amazing this book is. Everything I loved about this book is so important! 

I have to say one thing, that wasn’t that much of a shocker - who am I kidding it was a TOTAL shocker - that Kelly was asexual. Robbie didn’t give a fuck and neither did I because he’s no matter what one of my favorite characters (And we don’t judge here) but Robbie being so deeply in love with him and caring about him even if he didn’t..... never mind. 

After reading Joe’s and Ox’s, then Gordo and Marks, stories, I wasn’t sure if this book could top it. I was greatly mistaken... I admit with a big ass heart-throb too. This book was better then perfection, it was everything! Never ONCE did I see a problem with this book. 

I’m still shocked at how amazing, and how breathless this book has made me. I remember not thinking this book was going to be good for some reason when I first opened it years ago, but every time I read it I loved every flip of the page. The way the author portrays Robbie and Kelly’s feelings makes me feel every emotion. When they cried, I cried. When they were laughing, I was laughing. I couldn’t help it. These two characters are just so contagious with their feelings, and I loved them being together so much. I liked their coupling more then Mark and Gordo and I LOVED that coupling! 

I also loved how this book had the other two books kinda bleed into them. Like, even though we knew everything that happened, it was almost like reading the story again through new eyes. I love this story, and everything the author has put into it. I can’t wait to re-read the final installment already. 5 stars because it clearly descended it! 

Negatives: This needs to be a movie. Like yesterday! Heck! Three years ago would have been nice even!

The only thing I can say that could be considered a negative (more like a side note, really) I don’t know what it was with my second read, but I really just wanted to skip the formalities and get to the part where Robbie and Kelly were reunited already. I’m not sure if this could be considered a negative, but I put it here just in case some people are more into the nitty gritty types of books.

okay, so i've been kind of hard on some of these characters this season, so when i cast you, i am thinking about these characters in their most pure form....

@amortensie is nini salazar roberts! nixie has her kindness, her desire to be more...... and perhaps her awkward tendencies? i can also 100% see nixie being like "i panicked and i started stealing her stuff! what do i do???" plus, if any of us were to be miss gabriella montez in a regional production of hsm, it would be nixie.

@renjunvrse (idk if ashley has actually watched it, but it was on her to be watched list a few days ago, so i'm including her) anyway ashley is ashlyn caswell. dabbles in a bit of everything and is strangely competent in anything she attempts? that describes both of these amazing people. plus, i feel like they would have similar, flying under the radar humor. just like..... little comments that only few catch.

@brokenandheadoverheels is my one and only ej caswell. now listen up! this is a compliment - i will not tolerate ej hate on this blog (although we can all hate on him for listening to nini's voicemail. that's completely valid.). now while none of us are blessed enough to have ej's confidence, i feel like it's taken a blow since season 1, and michelle has that internal self esteem that's quiet and hard to quantify on the surface. plus, both of them are chaos demons when you look beneath the surface, and overly kind and thoughtful on the outside. plus, they both deserve a hug.

@onceupon-a-decembr is carlos rodriguez. both of them are hardworking and have confidence that makes them immediately likeable. i feel like both of them think of themselves as a little awkward or not fitting in, when they are literally the center of the friend group. plus, i feel like lindsay would also love starbucks a bit too much..... even if it's just for the lemonade.

@biqherosix took a lot of deliberating, but daniza is gina porter. both of them are 'go big or go home' types of people who really just want to find their place in this wide world. they're deeply caring but also don't know what to do with kindness, and they're both really funny and charming without really knowing it. (plus, i feel like gina binges a lot of netflix since she's kind of a ~loner~ and i associate daniza with some of the best shows i have ever been recommended to watch.) (i did debate making you kourtney, though.)

@johnskeating is ricky bowen! (but i believe we've talked about this - skater ricky bowen pLEASE.) now this may be a little ??? at first but listen closely because i swear it makes sense. both of these amazing people are so caring and sweet and maybe they freeze up a bit when they don't know what to do, but deep down they care about people so. much. and ricky may have..... lost the braincell, but cass will find it and be a responsible owner.... until she panics and it ends up with nini (@amortensie) but it's okay! because they're both pretty decent at awkwardly winging it. plus, i imagine that cass has very large, sweet eyes - just like ricky. (although i did debate making you big red.)
