French fantasy: The five "Great Old Ones"

A follow-up to the "Children of Orpheus and Melusine" post

Here are the five “pioneers” of fantasy in French literature, according to A. F. Ruaud: Michel Grimaud’s Malakansâr ; Francis Berthelot’s Kanaor ; Isabelle Hausser’s Célubée ;  Michel Pagel’s Les Flammes de la nuit ; dans Jean-Marc Ligny’s La Mort peut danser.

I)

More than a novel, Malakansâr (1980) is a journey, a long quest of absolute. It is does not have a mystico-religious conception of the world, but it rather offers a meditation about interiority and personal evolution. To do so, the tale is willingly contemplative in tone. The settings, sumptuously described, are extremely important, the rhythm is of a slowness matching the low technology level of this world, and it all invites to “turn upon oneself”. It is not a static text however: there are adventures and twists, new discoveries and dangers keep appearing on the path of our three heroes. But we are not in an actual adventure novel: far from the generic attempts of many fantasy beginners, Michel Grimaud, an old man of literature, finds back the alchemy practiced by authors such as Jean Giono, and uses it to make his tale as poetic as original.

Silo le Do has always been a carefree boy refusing conventions: young man of upper class, he is born in the town of Sétil, that claims itself the “city of science” but that in truth is all about bourgeoisie and commerce. Silo disdains as much his parents, born in the prejudice of high society, as his companions, coming from the sordid depths of the city. One evening, a double-revelation completely flips his life over, and changes radically the orientation of his existence: at first, he hears a song in a tavern, the testimony of a poetess recalling the vision of a fabulous city, built by gods and unreachable to mankind. Malakansâr! A legend that Silo finds himself full of desire for. It was the first revelation ; then, as he reaches adulthood, his family rejects him, exhausted by his misbehavior. Disgusted with everything and completely lost, Silo escapes the city with for sole company the beautiful slave Mowo, that had just been offered to Silo as a gift.

Meanwhile, Glévian is a young fisherman living in the enormous swamps of the One Hundred Thousand Lands. For him, the “revelation” will come from a small statue discovered in the entrails of a water-wolf. A small statue made of white stone – a material unknown in his land, a material surrounded by legends, a material worth a fortune. Rather than sell the statue and thus making a career for himself, Glévian starts a quest in search of the model the statue was carved after. Glévian and Silo will encounter each other, of course, and three travelers will have to overcome their prejudice, their racial and social differences, in order to go to travel, from the continent of the Evening Lands to the one of the Morning Lands, in order to, maybe, one day, reach their dream.

This novel exists outside of the norms and outside of its era – it fakes a simplicity, and has an admirable lyricism. Malakansâr only has one flaw: the desire to ultimately bring itself back into the cradle of science-fiction, by giving a very unsatisfying conclusion annihilating the marvelous. But it doesn’t care in the end, since before this forced conclusion, it is the seduction of the magic and wonders that fully rules, helped by an admirable stylistic work – rarely the language will be as celebrated as in this work.

A great stylistic care can also be found in Francis Berthelot’s Khanaor (1983). It is a shining, shimmering fable about a society learning harmony. Khanaro, an Atlantis-like island spared from the Christian dogma, is filled with wonders that also come from outside of the Anglo-Saxon tradition: Berthelot’s work rather finds its roots among Juline Gracq, André Pieyre, Mandiargues or Frédérick Tristan.

An official recap of the story goes as such: “Because the rivers are drying up, the wizard-queen of Aquimeur, Mervine, must sacrifice the wizards of Ardamance. Because the collectors of lava-snow of Ardamance are taking his country hostage, Leuthiag, the king of Goldèbe, must ally himself to Mervine. Because the people fear her, Mervine tries to kill Norenn, who was just trying to heal those around her. Sigrid, her grand-daughter, Kurt, the plant-charmer, Raïleh, Judith, l’Ancerf, Orchale and her father – they will all be absorbed against their will by this ruthless fate, under the pen of Francis Berthelot. But soon despair fades away… Will Khanaor be saved?”

Célubée (1986), under-titled “Novel of legendary times”, was the first novel published by Isabelle Hausser, which afterward never returned to the lands of fantasy, as if she had stumbled upon them by accident. Presented as a tale dictated to a scribe by a young woman, the servant of a princess, this enormous novel is not a historical fiction like so many others: if there are strong reminiscences of Antiquity, this Kingdom and this City with very neutral names do not evoke any clear historical era. Coelia’s tale is interwoven with another one, told by the poet Anticléridès, a tale at first about his past life, then about the life of another country, far older than the Kingdom, the titular Célubée, and we do not know if the poet actually invented this other land, or if he truly dug it up from unreadable archives. The reality of the second tale gains more solidity page after day, and the maybe-myth of Célubée slowly invades the reality of the Kingdom.

A meditation upon myths and power, this novel is also an entertaining double-adventure tale; as well as a strange research upon the links that two legends can form between each other. A fascinating and mind-turning embedding of tales, Célubée uses its shining prose to modernize the charms of a classic such as Basile’s Tale of Tales.

When Hausser talked of her work in the year 2000, she said: “By writing Célubée, fifteen years ago, I wanted to write an imaginary story about the creation of the world and of human society. Having read novels since I was a child, I wanted to write the book I wished I could have read every night before going to sleep. […] Célubée is a bit like those mythical animals, halfway between beast and man, disturbing and comforting at the same time.”

Coming from the science-fiction’s seraglio (unlike the previous authors), and published in a collection of train station literature (“Le Fleuve Noir – Anticipation”, which is the most famous synonym of “popular s-f”), Michel Pagel, who doesn’t like categories, overcame stereotypes. He offered, with his Les Flammes de la Nuit (The Flames of the Night) (originally published in four volumes, then re-edited and rewritten into one integral novel) a work of the literature of the marvelous, that thinks about itself and that, without denying its belonging to the adventure literature, manages to renew itself by examining its own archetypes.

The world of Fuinör is a strange one: superficially, it looks like a fairytale kingdom, straight out of the clichés carried by a Cinderella cartoon. Everything is there: the castle, the knights, an enchanter that evokes Merlin, the good fairies that gather around the princess’ cradle… But it is all a façade, beneath which lies all the perversions of a frozen myth. It is a sclerotic world, built on unfairness and arbitrary. Fairies are the guardians of an established order – but is it a good order, or a bad order? Things are more nuanced than they appear at first… Rowena, catalyst of the change, will fight against prejudices, commit blasphemy upon blasphemy, all until she is exiled to the Land of Madness – and this is when her true quest beings.

One probably needed to be a hardy fool to publish such a novel in such an era (1986), but it was also needed for the author to have culture, intuition and talent. All in all, thirty years later, The Flames of the night still impose themselves as a mature success, that did not gain any wrinkle. Afterward, Pagel did another very beautiful journey throughout the lands of fantasy, with his historical novel “Le roi d’août” (The King of August, 2002), where he offers a mythological reading of the life of the king Philippe-Auguste.

Another “hardy fool” of this time was Jean-Marc Ligny who, in 1994, brutally left the science-fiction genre, of which he was a familiar, just for the time of a novel, a novel written in a style of fantasy that we couldn’t identify at the time, but that we can recognize today as “urban fantasy”. The science-fiction world of the time held quite a grudge against him at the time, and was filled with extremely harsh and dry judgements for his “La Mort peut danser” (Death can dance). However, in present days, we see very easily that it is not a mediocre novel as critics described upon its release – it is a remarkable and original work, a dark and seducing novel. Between the Ireland of 1181, in the middle of the Anglo-Normand invasion, and the one of 1981, split by nationalist tensions and terrorist attacks, the narration wanders among Celtic legends. Bran and Alyz, avant-garde musicians, find themselves plunged (thanks to Alyz’s graceful voice) into a strange synergy beyond time itself, and are forced to accomplish the prophecy of a trio of crows…

Ruaud explains that, after those five pioneers, oasis of wonders and marvels in the desert of science and technology, “foolish” pioneers that tried to resurrect fantasy in decades dominated by snobbish critics and science-fiction authors, we would have to wait for the 1990s for fantasy to truly appear as such in France. It was when the “locks were burst open” and France knew a flow of “warriors and fairies”. Ruaud explains that this might be because the authors of the 90s had been, as children, part of the wave of role-playing games, as well as the audience of the boom of the American fantasy. Anyway, young authors suddenly appeared, in an editing world which had a brand new generation of literary directors, and it was a heaven-sent union.

The true formation of the French fantasy is tied to the Mnémos edition which, pioneer of the fantasy edition, published in small formats the new names of French fantasy: David Calvo, Fabrice Collin, Mathieu Gaborit, Pierre Grimbert and Laurent Kloetzer. They were not a “school”, but a generation, that soon became famous – and opened the way for even more authors afterward. The “Mnémos generation” opened a rift within the wall, and now fantasy has been flooding French literature.

Ruaud concludes by mentioning the three names who, for him, are already forming the “references” of French fantasy – Pierre Dubois, Mathieu Gaborit, and Jean-Philippe Jaworski.

Hélène Grimaud : "La musique est l'art le plus primitif, le plus essentiel qui soit"

Hélène Grimaud

Pianiste surdouée et auteure de trois livres, Hélène Grimaud est bien plus que cela. Elle nous raconte dans Variations sauvages, son premier roman largement autobiographique, sa rencontre dans la Floride sauvage avec un vétéran du Vietnam qui élève une louve dont elle hérite à la mort du vieil homme.

Née en 1969 à Aix-en-Provence, elle découvre la musique et le piano à l’âge de sept ans, entre au conservatoire à onze ans, et donne son premier concert à quatorze ans. À quinze ans, elle obtient son premier prix de piano, puis à dix-huit ans, elle donne ses premiers concerts en dehors du conservatoire.

Tokyo, Paris, Cleveland, puis une tournée aux Etats-Unis. Âgée de seulement 21 ans, Hélène Grimaud choisit de s’établir à Tallahassee, en Floride. Elle rencontre un vétéran du Vietnam qui élève une louve au rez-de-chaussée de sa maison, qui lui est consacré. A la mort de son ami, Hélène s’occupe de sa louve, et commence à se passionner pour les loups, étudie leurs mœurs et leur comportement, et entame des études d’éthologie qu’elle achève avec succès afin d’ouvrir une fondation et un parc destiné à leur étude et leur réhabilitation : le Wolf Conservation Center, cofondé avec le photographe J. Henry Fair.

Musicalement parlant, Hélène Grimaud joue des morceaux de Rachmaninov, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Beethoven, Bartok, Mozart… Sa palette d’interprétation est large. 

Dans Variations sauvages, récit initiatique qui a une grande part autobiographique, Hélène Grimaud parle autant de sa passion pour la musique que celle, grandissante, pour les loups, en racontant cette rencontre avec Alawa à un moment de doute, rencontre qui mènera à une renaissance pour l’auteur.

“En fait, une seule culture a respecté le loup, et encore dans la mythologie seulement car sur ses terres aussi, il était impitoyablement chassé pour sa fourrure. Les pays celtes et les contrées scandinaves aux nuits infinies d’hiver, aux ciels d’une pureté cristalline dans la rhapsodie blanche du Nord lui ont attribué, dans leurs légendes, le symbole de la lumière. Là où d’autres le font hurler sous la lune, le loup y incarne le soleil. Au cœur de ces grands espaces saisis, dans leur aveuglante vérité, par le froid, dans cet autre éden, ce paradis préadamique où ne fleurit aucun mensonge ni imposture, dans ce Grand Nord qui n’admet aucun relâchement, interdit toute langueur sauf en l’amour, le loup est la vie, plus mordante que le gel. La vie, dans une acuité énorme.”

“L’homme doit trouver son élément, le 5e, le seul dont nous ne serons jamais exclus. L’art est cet élément sans lequel nous errons, orphelins malheureux, sans lequel nous nous coupons de la nature et du cosmos, parce que nous devenons sourds, aveugles, insensibles, désensibilisés.”

Fun-fact : 

Hélène Grimaud est synesthète, elle voit une couleur en écoutant ou même en pensant à la musique. Ses sens de l’ouïe et de la vue s’entremêlent alors.

UNE FINE BRUINE DE NEIGE FONDUE

Audimat présente ainsi l’article d’Arnaud Maguet intitulé “Les Voyages de Dashiell Hedayat et Michel Bulteau” : “Poète électrique, éditeur d’auteurs infréquentables et traducteur d’Aubrey Beardsley, Denton Welch, Dylan Thomas, Paul Bowles ou même Saul Williams, Michel Bulteau a aussi fait un peu de musique depuis ses débuts dans les années 1960, comme par exemple au sein du groupe Mahogany Brain, dont le premier album a été réédité voici quelques mois. Jack-Alain Léger, écrivain — notamment auteur du best-seller Monsignore en 1976 — magnétisé comme Bulteau par la contre-culture rock et pop, a quant à lui enregistré un disque devenu une haute curiosité française, Obsolète, sous le nom de Dashiell Hedayat. On sait un peu que le « rock » et la littérature entretiennent en France des rapports parfois envahissants : ils se fascinent tellement l’un l’autre qu’ils en perdent parfois leurs moyens — en 2013 Audimat avait d’ailleurs organisé à la Gaité Lyrique un débat sur ce sujet. Aussi ne pouvions-nous pas refuser un projet d’article proposant de s’intéresser sur pièces à ce « marronnier » de la culture underground française. Arnaud Maguet est un plasticien qui travaille beaucoup sur la musique, il sort d’ailleurs aussi des disques sur son label les Disques en rotin réunis. Il enseigne par ailleurs à la Villa Arson, à Nice. En décrivant méthodiquement, mais non sans style, l’expérience d’écoute des deux opus susmentionnés et en l’épaississant de faits et de fictions, il avance sur le terrain scabreux de cette légende du rock littéraire en l’ouvrant à son imagination auditive — comme si son oreille, lassée qu’on la gave de conjectures, avait préféré inventer ce qu’elle entendait.”

..., ..., .. “On ferme les yeux et on pense à Youtube : tout de cuir noir vêtu, face à Denise Glaser, dans une unique archive télévisée de l'époque, tout engoncé et suant comme un Vince Taylor filmé en 4:3 mais regardé en 16:9, bouffi et hirsute, motard crypto-gay changeant les paroles en « Mystère rose », ceinture-fouet en main, en 1971 en France, il n'est ni de son temps ni de son espace. Il est dans un temps parallèle, celui de la fiction, celle du personnage qu'il a créé et que présentement il incarne. Il est ce rôle, en ce jour, pour lui plus viable.

Une ritournelle de manège d'antan, de l'eau qui coule dans un récipient, ce récipient qui résonne en une cadence, une descente de guitare, les gémissement de Gilli Smyth, la douce sorcière du Gong. C'est une Fille de l'ombre.

Ensuite, pour moi, la plus belle chanson du disque, la plus belle balade chantée en langue française, peut-être. Paroles cryptiques, surréalisme drogué : « Cheval vapeur / horse power ». Une chanson d'amour malgré tout, malgré les paradis artificiels, malgré toutes ces choses qui ne sont que des reflets et le réel qui par-delà aboie : « Ce n'est pas à vous que ces compliments étaient adressés, vous l'avez cru parce que vous êtes rousse aussi, c'est pour votre chien que mon cœur bat ». Long Song For Zelda, quelque part entre Madame Fitzgerald et la princesse de synthèse, il y a donc eu un chien roux. Comme il devait être beau.

Puis, William S. Burroughs parle un peu, alors nous écoutons”..., ..., ...

..., ..., ... “« Michel Bulteau divague vocalement, la plupart du temps en anglais, et sans grande énergie communicative, accompagné d'un duo ou d'un trio de musiciens, incluant Patrick Geoffrois à la basse. Cela sonne aussi mollement qu'un groupe blues-rock digérant très mal un gâteau aux psilocybes préparé selon une recette douteuse ». C'est assez cinglant, mais c'est bien ainsi, très brièvement, que Éric Deshayes et Dominique Grimaud (principal architecte du génial Vidéo-Aventures) évoque le premier album de Mahogany Brain dans leur ouvrage L'Underground musical en France (Le Mot et le reste, 2013). Quant à mon cher ami Philippe Robert, même si je sais qu'il l'apprécie, il ne l'évoque pas dans son Musiques expérimentales (Le Mot et le reste, 2014). C'est dire si la rencontre avec ce monument supposé commençait mal, aucune écoute n'étant disponible vu la rareté de l'objet. Pas moyen de se faire alors un avis personnel. Mon disquaire de quartier en proposait bien un exemplaire original à la vente, mais à un prix si prohibitif qu'il n'était même pas proposé à l'écoute. On ne goûte pas une bouteille Cheval Blanc millésime 1961 avant d'en faire l'acquisition, et puis, le temps passant, il a peut-être tourné vinaigre — les outrages de l'âge s'attaquent aussi parfois aux objets du culte. Quelle engeance !

Hiver 2017, Paris, boutique Souffle Continu du label éponyme. Ils viennent de rééditer ce disque. Dehors il tombe une fine bruine de neige fondue, glaciale. Fin d'après-midi, la boutique est vide, j'ai tout le temps de discuter avec le toujours sympathique taulier derrière le comptoir et d'écouter le vinyle au casque.

On referme les yeux et on repense à Youtube : je sais que les versions schredded de concerts filmés ont fait beaucoup de mal à l'image de la musique expérimentale improvisée, mais là, dans une des boutiques les mieux achalandée que je connaisse, écrasé par la culpabilité, tous les yeux de tous les visages reproduits sur toutes les pochettes autour de moi semblant me toiser et me juger, là, précisément, en écoutant ce disque, c'est exactement ce à quoi je pense. J'ai honte.”..., ..., ...

SEGNI E DISEGNI DEL MAGGIO

 Tutto cominciò con un assalto ad un’agenzia dell’American Express in Rue Scribe vista come simbolo dell’imperialismo americano. Dopo l’assalto, i muri dell’agenzia sono riempiti di scritte inneggianti al FNL vietnamita. A seguito di quell’assalto viene arrestato uno studente universitario, Xavier Langlade, aderente allla JCR, ovvero la “Jeunesse Communiste Révolutionaire”. Subito dopo incominciano le proteste del movimento che occupa gli uffici amministrativi dell’università a Nanterre, banlieu parigina. A capo dell’occupazione c’è Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Daniel il Rosso. Così nasce il Maggio francese e, di conseguenza, il Sessantotto. “La Veille du Grand Soir” è una bellissima “bande dessinée” di Patrick Rotman e Sébastien Vassant che racconta le vicende di quel mese di maggio che sconvolse letteralmente Parigi e idealmente tutto il mondo. Le tavole restituiscono anche meglio della fotografia o dei filmati, la drammaticità, ma anche la poesia di quei giorni di scontri violentissimi e di proteste che il governo francese non riuscì mai a controllare pienamente. Il Boulevard Saint-Michel devastato, ma anche palpitante dei sogni degli studenti, le barricate della Rue Gay Lussac, la Sorbonne occupata e trasformata in ospedale, le scritte, come quella famosa comparsa sulla fontana di Saint-Michel, “Sous les pavé, la plage”, rivivono attraverso l’inchiostro di Sébastien Vessant e sembrano fatte, più che della materia dei sogni, di quella del ricordo. Gran bel fumetto, zeppo di informazioni inedite, almeno per me e di richiami iconografici importanti, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la grafica e gli “affiches” di quegli anni. Bello ritrovare nomi di registi, scrittori, intellettuali , artisti, impegnati tra quelle barricate, tra gli altri Jean-Luc Godard, Sartre, Gerard Fromager e dall’altra parte, per esempio Louis Barrault, direttore dell’Odéon, altro luogo al centro delle lotte parigine. In parallelo al dipanarsi delle vicende degli studenti, ecco le reazioni politiche dell’Elysée con il generale De Gaulle, i ministri a cominciare da quello dell’educazione Alain Peyrefitte, il ministro dell’interno Christian Fouchet, ma anche il Prefetto di polizia di Parigi Maurice Grimaud, i rappresentanti dei maggiori sindacati, il leader del Partito Socialista, un certo François Mitterand, insomma una grande capacità di raccontare la cronaca politica e le vicende storiche col tratto veloce del pennino, ma anche con una grande capacità di introspezione psicologica. Grande merito allo sceneggiatore Patrick Rotman, scrittore e autore di numerosi documentari su De Gaulle, sul muro di Berlino a altri scottanti temi della nostra storia recente. In coda alla storia, l’appendice “Le murs d’après”, con una breve ma preziosa antologia delle “affiches” e delle grafiche prodotte dal Movimento. Aver acquistato questo volume nel book shop della mostra fotografica di Gilles Caron all’ Hotel de Ville, intitolata “Paris, 1968” costituisce sicuramente un valore aggiunto, almeno da un punto di vista sentimentale...

Gibert et Cultura ont décidé de retirer de leurs magasins nouvelle la bande dessinée de Bastien Vivès, « Petit Paul », jugée pédopornographique.

Grand Petit Paul

Aujourd’hui, alors que nous recevons dans Les Chemins de la philosophie l’immense et inénarrable Denis Ramond qui vient de nous parler de la question de l’interdiction de la pornographie, j’aimerais évoquer une récente polémique qui, je ne vous le cache pas, m’a fait dresser les cheveux sur la tête. Vous connaissez peut-être Bastien Vivès, je l’espère en tout cas, le jeune et extraordinairement talentueux dessinateur de bande dessiné.

Sa dernière BD, paru aux éditions Glénat dans la collection Porn’Pop, raconte la vie d’un petit garçon qui porte le doux nom de Petit Paul. Petit Paul vit à la campagne avec son père et sa sœur Magalie. L’histoire pourrait être banale, sauf que Petit Paul est né avec une malformation pour le moins étonnante, un sexe immense difficile à dissimuler et qui déclenche dans son entourage, surtout parmi les femmes, les plus violents pulsions, alors même que Petit Paul n’est pas vraiment encore en âge de penser à la chose. Où qu’il soit, à la ferme, en classe ou chez ses amis, le pauvre petit garçon est sans cesse confronté à des scènes absurdes et embarrassantes. D’un trait de crayon virtuose, Bastien Vivès rompt le voile et donne à voir de manière tout à fait réjouissante les fantasmes inavoués qui nous agitent parfois.

Pétition et rideau

L’ouvrage devrait faire un tabac. L’éditeur a d’ailleurs d’emblée pris toutes les dispositions nécessaires pour éviter un psychodrame. La bande dessinée est vendue sous plastique avec un autocollant disant : « Ouvrage à caractère pornographique. Mise à disposition des mineurs interdite. » Mais apparemment même ce genre de précautions sont de nos jours insuffisantes. Dans une pétition sur internet signée par 2500 personnes, un certain « D. Greene » s’insurge de la publication d’un tel livre. Invoquant le code pénal, il accuse la bande dessinée d’être pédopornographique et de constituer une apologie de l’abus de l’enfant. Réaction immédiate chez Gibert et Cultura qui décident, dans un grand élan de courage, de retirer la bande dessinée de leurs magasins. La décision est plus que regrettable, mais elle soulève un certain nombre de questions intéressantes sur la liberté artistique, l’exception dont devraient bénéficier les fictions, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit de dessin ou de peinture ou encore les limites qu’une société s’impose en matière de représentations pornographiques.

Puritains et maîtres censeurs

Sans pouvoir trancher toutes ces questions d’un coup, on peut néanmoins constater une recrudescence de l’esprit puritain un peu partout dans le monde occidental, aux Etats-Unis, patrie du puritanisme, mais aussi en Europe qui, sans doute par mimétisme, connaît de plus en plus de polémiques liées à des censures intempestives d’œuvres longtemps protégées. Je pense là à L’Origine du monde de Gustave Courbet, retirée de Facebook sans autre forme de procès, ou encore aux magnifiques nus d’Egon Schiele censurés en Allemagne et en Angleterre. Mais revenons à notre sujet et parlons un peu de pédopornographie et de pédophilie en général. Laissez-moi d’abord vous rappeler cet épisode qui a fait couler beaucoup d’encre. En 1982, dans l’émission Apostrophes animée par Bernard Pivot, Daniel Cohn-Bendit se retrouve face à l’écrivain et journaliste Paul Guth et lui tient des propos pour le moins étonnants…

Sexualité des enfants : totem et tabou

En 2001, alors que l’extrait avait été rediffusé entraînant pour la première fois une polémique, Bernard Pivot avait rappelé au Journal du Dimanche qu’à l’époque de la diffusion de l’émission, en 1982, Daniel Cohn-Bendit n'avait été interpellé là-dessus par aucun des invités présents. Ni par un homme d'ordre, le préfet Maurice Grimaud, ni par un catholique traditionaliste, Michel de Saint-Pierre, ni par le philosophe François Châtelet. Ni par lui non plus. Il n’y avait d’ailleurs eu aucune protestation dans la presse. Mais alors que s’est-il passé entre 1980 et 2000 ? Entendons-nous bien. Il était nécessaire que la pédophilie soit reconnue pour ce qu’elle est, c’est-à-dire un crime et que la pédopornographie qui fait florès sur internet soit condamnée dans toutes ses formes. Mais cela veut-il pour autant dire que la sexualité de l’enfant doit être niée par principe, renvoyée dans les limbes de l’histoire, accusée d’être le seul fait d’adultes malveillants ? Rien ne semble moins vrai et il me paraît, pour ma part, dangereux de refuser d’aborder le sujet, même s’il est évidemment délicat. La découverte de l’éros se fait dès la petite enfance, souvent de manière douloureuse d’ailleurs car elle renferme des réalités et des fantasmes inavouables, mais souvent aussi de manière cocasse, drôle et absurde. Refuser d’aborder le sujet, c’est refuser de comprendre l’épaisseur de l’enfance et du rapport que les enfants entretiennent au désir. Refuser d’aborder le sujet, c’est aussi laisser entendre que désir et culpabilité vont toujours de pair. Mais je le répète, le sujet est délicat. Pour en parler il faut du talent. Et bien Bastien Vivès n’en manque pas. Alors courez acheter sa bande dessinée Petit Paul parue aux éditions Glénat.

Grimaud warns against physical instruments that "can certainly indicate no more than the degrees of intensity of heat; and these differences are the least important in practice;… the doctor must apply himself, above all, to distinguishing in feverish heat qualities that may be perceived only by a highly practised touch, and which elude whatever means physics may offer. There is, for example, that acrid, irritating quality of feverish heat" that

gives the same impression as ‘smoke in the eyes’

Jésus le vrai pasteur

Chers frères et sœurs, l'amour est un mystère de présence. Nous en faisons tous l'expérience, aimer c'est d'abord être là auprès de ceux qui nous sont chers tout particulièrement dans les moments de joie et plus encore dans les moments d'épreuves. Et l'on peut dire que la pandémie que nous traversons depuis plus d'un an maintenant nous a fait toucher cela de manière très sensible et parfois même de façon douloureuse quand nous n'avons pas eu la possibilité d'accompagner un proche en fin de vie.

Or la Révélation chrétienne, nous met justement en présence d'un Dieu qui se fait proche. En Jésus de Nazareth, il se fait même l'un de nous ! Il vient mêler ses pas aux nôtres pour faire route avec nous sur le chemin de la vie et nous révéler la beauté d'une existence tournée vers Dieu, source de tout amour.

C'est précisément ce mystère de proximité et de présence du Seigneur à nos vies que dans la page d'évangile que nous venons d'entendre, Jésus nous dévoile. Et il l'exprime par une parole à la fois toute simple et d'une densité extrême : « je suis » ; manière de nous dire, « je suis présent, je suis là ». Autrefois, déjà, quand Dieu s'était manifesté à Moïse pour qu'il libère Israël de l'esclavage en Egypte, il l'avait assuré de son soutien en lui disant, « je serai avec toi » au point que c'était devenu le nom même de Dieu ! Nous croyons donc en un Dieu qui se dit et se nomme : « je suis là, je suis présent » et c'est ce que manifeste Jésus quand il nous dit « je suis la lumière du monde », « je suis le pain de vie », « je suis le chemin, la vérité et la vie ». Il est lui-même cette présence divine qui éclaire l'existence, nourrit les cœurs, oriente sur le chemin et donne la vie. Alors quand ce matin il ajoute : « je suis le bon berger, le vrai pasteur », nous comprenons qu'il est cette présence qui nous apporte sécurité, paix et joie du cœur.

En se désignant comme « le vrai pasteur », Jésus nous invite d'ailleurs, dans le sillage des annonces prophétiques du Premier Testament, à le reconnaître comme le Sauveur attendu par Israël. En précisant : « Je suis le vrai pasteur, le vrai pasteur donne sa vie pour ses brebis », il nous révèle le sens de son existence entièrement tournée vers nous. Et comment nous donne-t-il sa vie, sinon tout d'abord en nous la communiquant ! Les évangiles sont pleins de ces récits où Jésus, par son attitude et sa parole, relève, redresse, guérit, pardonne, rend leur dignité aux exclus, à ceux et celles que plus personne ne considère ni même ne voit.

Le vrai Pasteur est ému de compassion pour la plus égarée de ses brebis et c'est pour cela qu'aujourd'hui encore, il nous appelle, dans son sillage, à servir la vie ! N'est-ce pas le point commun de toute vocation ?

« Je suis le vrai pasteur. Je connais mes brebis et mes brebis me connaissent, comme le Père me connaît et que je connais le Père », précise encore Jésus. Par ces mots il nous révèle un autre aspect de sa manière d'être vrai pasteur : la connaissance intime qu'il partage avec le Père il veut aussi l'établir avec nous pour qu'en lui nous devenions nous aussi, enfants de Dieu. Ainsi voyons-nous à quelle communion il veut nous attirer et à quelle hauteur d'humanité il veut nous élever !

Pasteur de tous, il nous connaît cependant chacun et chacune personnellement et tel le berger appelant ses brebis une à une, il ne cesse de venir frapper à l'oreille de notre cœur pour nous combler de sa présence. Ne reconnaissez-vous pas sa voix ? C'est elle pourtant, chers frères et sœurs, qui dans les circonstances les plus diverses de l'existence ne cesse de raviver en nous l'espérance, elle qui aux heures de doute et d'angoisse nous donne sa paix, elle qui toujours nous appelle à choisir la vie, à la servir et même à la donner car, nous dit encore notre unique et vrai Pasteur : « Il n'y a pas de plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour ses amis ». Lui a donné la sienne pour nous. Laissons-nous illuminer, chers frères et sœurs, par un tel mystère de Présence.

L’usine de soude (1826)

Le procédé de fabrication de la soude, au début du xixe siècle, consiste à faire chauffer dans des fours en brique un mélange de sel, de calcaire et d’acide sulfurique. Les vapeurs acides qui s’en dégagent rendaient ces usines toxiques. Ceci conduit Napoléon à établir une des premières lois environnementales : elle imposait que les usines polluantes devaient être implantées en dehors de toute agglomération.

M. Michel, copropriétaire de Porquerolles, entreprend de construire une fabrique de soude au Langoustier. Le site répond parfaitement aux textes de lois promulgués par Napoléon. Le lieu a comme autre avantage la proximité des salines de Giens qui permet de réduire l’impôt sur le sel, la gabelle. De plus, Marseille est exportateur de charbon et de calcaire, mais également importateur de soude pour approvisionner ses fabriques de savons ; de ce fait, les transports des barges sont optimisés.

Cependant, M. Michel n’a pas accès à la mer puisque le Génie militaire a réquisitionné la bande côtière de l’île. Aussi, en 1824, alors que le village de Porquerolles est en train d’être créé, il négocie deux hectares de rivage contre le terrain du moulin à proximité du fort du village.

De cette première demande, le capitaine du Génie en chef retient l’intérêt d’un môle ainsi que des bâtiments pouvant être réquisitionnés en cas de conflit. Toutefois, il insiste pour que l’armée acquière le moulin, qui pourrait, selon lui, être une menace à la sécurité du fort Sainte-Agathe. Enfin, s’il est opposé à toute vente de terrain, il donne son aval pour un affermage. Renouvelé deux ans plus tard, cet échange est étudié par un autre capitaine, qui confirme les premières observations. Il relève l’intérêt d’une population locale supplémentaire, idée aussi préconisée par sa hiérarchie. Il met aussi en avant les recettes engendrées par cette location.

Après un accord sur le plan d’affermage, l’usine est construite en 1826 ; elle produit deux tonnes de soude l’année suivante et emploie une centaine d’ouvriers. Deux ans plus tard, MM. de Lenoncourt et Michel vendent l’île à MM. Noilly et Plasse ; la fabrique est vendue aux sieurs Rigaud, Crémieux et Delpuget.

Les nouveaux propriétaires obtiennent du Génie, en 1829, l’autorisation pour la construction d’un corps de garde, à l’usage du douanier qui avait en charge de collecter la gabelle (dans le cercle noir, image ci-dessous).

Pour ses communications, l’usine avait été autorisée, à une date inconnue, à s’équiper d’un mât de signal ; pour éviter que celui-ci ne soit utilisé à des fins d’espionnage, le plan d’affermage de 1859 impose que son utilisation soit contrôlée par M. le maréchal commandant territorial.

En 1859, la fabrique est vendue aux sieurs Renard, Jouvin, Boude et Robert. Ceux-ci utilisent dorénavant le procédé Leblanc de 1858. Ils entreprennent de nombreux aménagements : dévoiement de pluviaux, construction de nouveaux fours et de bâtiments, ainsi qu’un chemin de fer reliant la fabrique à la plage du petit port.

Les cartouches noirs avec des flèches situent l’hôtel actuel (le bâtiment principal se trouve dans la ferme qui n’est pas encore construite à cette date), le tennis et la piscine. À noter que la piscine actuelle est implantée dans l’ancien bassin de la fabrique de soude.

Le trait noir indique l’emplacement de la cheminée principale qui suit la pente du terrain (cheminée rampante) et se termine par une cheminée verticale.

Le trait vert délimite une dernière extension de la fabrique (après 1863), accolée à un four.

En 1876, c’est la fin de l’usine de soude du Langoustier. L’invention du procédé chimique de M. Solvay en 1863, beaucoup moins polluant et surtout beaucoup plus rentable, sonne le glas de cette exploitation qui produisait 2 000 tonnes de soude par an et employait 150 ouvriers avant sa fermeture.

À voir ces ruines sans toitures, on se dit qu’il est probable que les poutres et les tuiles de cette usine aient été revendues au moment de l’abandon du site. De même, les pierres utilisées pour la construction des murs ont dû être cédées et déplacées car on n’en voit plus aucune trace.

De nos jours, il ne reste de l’usine que des murs de restanques, deux fours et la cheminée rampante.

Concernant la plage noire, sa couleur est due aux scories (déchets résultant de la combustion du charbon) déposées à l’emplacement de l’actuel héliport et qui se sont répandues dans la baie.

Outre ces quelques vestiges, voici un témoignage humain : un document de mariage nous informe que l’aïeul de Gérard Grimaud (qui réside à Porquerolles), Guillaume Alexis, « ouvrier en soude », s’est marié le 15 juillet 1834.
