The Snowman, 12%: Fuck this fucking film.

So I just saw The Snowman and it's was a piece of shit. Gonna divide this into positives and negatives to get the "good" stuff out of the way.

Positives: All 12% of ‘em!

• Nice imagery and colour.

• Micheal Fassbenders performance and most of the casts performances.

• Norways beautiful scenery.

Negatives: 88% Shit

Fuck. Me. This film seems like half of it was left on the cutting room floor. The film spends way too much time setting things up and introducing characters that go no where or genuinely mean nothing. For example; J.K Simmons character. Now, I love J.K Simmons and I challenge you to find someone who dosent, especially when you take into consideration “THAT SPIDER-MAN IS A MENACE!”, but for some fucking reason instead of the passionate, angry, room filling character who usually plays, they make him a mild mannered politician who speaks in a soft Norwegian accent, never raises his voice and is in the film because…. J.K Simmons. My issues with his character are that his storyline is set up that he’s some sort of sexual predator or sells or rapes women, but this is set up with no pay off, his entire storyline is just straight up dropped and used as a means to an end that is unassacary, and I mean, UNASSACRY! They could’ve literally cut out every scene he’s in or every scene of his plot (About 30 minutes) and the film would make more fucking sense! This is one of the many thins that seem as though they cut out in editing to save time. Also as a side note, if you’re going to get J.K Simmons fucking use him properly, (and that goes for Fassbender aswell, he’s great in the film but it dosent use his potential at all) or is his great acting not the reason he’s in the film? Maybe he’s a recognisable actor who many people love? Maybe he’s in the film to sell tickets for a film with low notoriety being released a week before Thor Ragnarock in the same period of Justice Leauge and Star Wars: The Last Jedi??? Maybe the studio was worried the film wouldn’t perform as well at the box office during triple A and Oscar bait season???

Temporal Narative: "Ooooooooo We’re SO Clever!"

Another issue with the film is the time jumps, now using a non linear timeline in a film can work beautifully, Memento is a great example of this if not on the same calibre. The issue with the time jumps is that their not announced. I'm personally not a fan of subtitles to ikistrate this point but even that is more acceptable than nothing, it took me nearly 3/4 way through the film to realise that the film had been jumping back in time, now you could argue that this is my fault, but, there is nothing to distinguish it from the present day timeline, and equally you learn that the time jumps to the past are only there to make you sympathetic for a certain character, which In of itself isn't a sin, but guess what, its fucking pointless. My assumption would be that the Killer was a sequence killer, maticulous and intelligent, making things in the past repeat in the future, but it's only done as an actual fuck you to a character, and I mean a literal fuck you.

Trailer Deception and The Idiot Savant

Something the trailer put across that quote annoyed me when it wasn't in the final film is that this would be something akin to "Jigsaw" in the Saw films ( Which are now just a cancerous shell of the original I might add), that everything Fassbender did had already been thought ahead of in advance by the killer, but not it turns out it's basically all incidental, which makes the killer seem more of a blundering idiot who got lucky, which completely takes away from the killers end at the end of the film. But even worse the film repeatedly attempts to make you think that it is clever and thought provoking. You know what would've made it clever? IF YOU DIDNT INTRODUCE YOUR KILLER HALF WAY THROUGH THE FILM AS A RANDOM FUCKING GUY WITH NO IMPORTANCE TO THE STORY.

Fixing the Film: Make Fassbender the Killer

So hears a question, why was the killer the step father? Why was he set up as a perfectly normal guy? Why did you set up the killers origin at the very begginning of the film? And then cut straight to FUCKING Micheal Fassbender? If a more skilled director or writer was involved then maybe they could’ve set up actual motivation for the reveal of the killer but obviously fucking not. From the way the film is edited and some of the clues it "sprinkles" they could’ve done something really interesting.

So here I am going to try and fix the film without changing too much of what’s already there.

1. Remove the b. Plot with J.K Simmons entirely, it’s not important, it’s jarring, less is more.

2. Move the time jumps to more recent so the revenge plot seems more motivated through nerves and recklessness and so that its actually relevant to Fassbenders character.

3. Okay so here is the big one; make Fassbender the killer. This could probably be done in a re-edit of the film because of how much evidence there is or that is accidentally put in there. 1) The killer leaves a cigarette behind at his murder scenes and nearly the only character who smokes is Fassbender, I know it’s out there but stay with me. 2) Fassbenders character is a very experienced police detective who is renowned so you could easily make him a Sherlock Holmes level intelligence character with little effort and create the idea he knows how to cover his tracks. 3) Fassbender is already and alcoholic in the film with hints to mental instability and depression. He also multiple times in the film gets drunk and wakes up in locations he has no idea going. With all these factors you could easily create an idea of schizophrenia or something like that, with one personality committing murders and taunting the protagonist (good Fassbender) and one personality trying to solve the murders. This would be something similarly done in the way of Fight Club, with the reveal being at the end and maybe a flashback sequence of him constantly fucking himself over.

This ending is obviously subjective and what I would’ve liked the film to be (and also what I thought the film would be from the trailers but hey ho) but I honestly think this would’ve been better than the shit show it ended up being, being critically panned, even on fucking IMDB, the most bullshit, generous and pandering review site there is.

Thank you for your time, this film was shit.
