Michaela Mabinty DePrince (Mabinty Bangura; January 6, 1995 â September 10, 2024) was a ballet dancer, currently dancing with the Boston Ballet. She rose to fame after starring in the documentary First Position in 2011, following her and other young ballet dancers as they prepared to compete at the Youth America Grand Prix. With her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, she authored the book Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina. She danced with the Dance Theatre of Harlem as the youngest dancer in the history of the company and was a former soloist with the Dutch National Ballet. She was a goodwill ambassador with the Dutch organization War Child, based in Amsterdam.
Born into a Muslim family, she grew up as an orphan in Sierra Leone after her uncle brought her to an orphanage during the civil war. Her adoptive parents were told that her father was shot and killed by the Revolutionary United Front when she was three years old and that her mother starved to death soon after.
In 1999, she and another girl were adopted by Elaine and Charles DePrince, a couple from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and taken to the US.
She trained as a ballet dancer, performing at the Youth America Grand Prix among other competitions. She trained in classical ballet at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia. Concurrent with intense ballet training, she took online classes through Keystone National High School, where she earned her high school diploma. She graduated from the American Ballet Theatreâs Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York. Her professional debut performance was in the role of Gulnare in Mzansi Productions and the South African Ballet Theatreâs premiere of Le Corsaire on July 19, 2012.
In 2015 MGM acquired the film rights to her book Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina. In 2018 MGM announced that Madonna will direct Taking Flight, a biopic on her life and career.
In 2021, she joined the Boston Ballet as a second soloist. She danced the leading role in Coppelia. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

PROLOGUE

(Gif and photo of Michaela DePrince)
This is an Original Character fanfiction. All Stranger Things characters and content are owned by Netflix and The Duffer Brothers.
a/n: This is my first fanfiction ever. I believe pacing and context is important in any story. This is going to be a slow burn. Hopefully this prologue gives you a little insight on who Diana Sinclair is separate from The Party.
I am a ballet dancer so there is a lot of dance terminology in this. I urge you all to look up some of these moves and positions.
Anywho, let me know what you all think!

PROLOGUE || PART I ||
Sunday November 6, 1983 - BELOV DANCE ACADEMY
PiquĂ© tour. PiquĂ© tour. Upper body. PiquĂ© tour andâŠdouble pirouette en dedans.Â
âBeautiful, Diana.â Madame Petrovna praises over the melodic rhythm.Â
My cheeks grow hot and I continue to dance breathing deeply through my nose. I prepare myself for the hardest move: the Gargouillade. I still didnât quite understand it, but let my body guide me through the movement. Extending my right foot dĂ©gagĂ© to the side, rotating my leg in a small rond de jambe, while pushing off the floor with my left leg to do another rond de jambe with my left foot.Â
âAnd jump!â Madame Petrovna exclaims. âYes, yes.âÂ
I perform the gargouillade again, wincing slightly at the second rond de jambe. I didnât circle my foot completely.Â
âDonât show me youâre tired, Diana. This move is supposed to look effortless.âÂ
I force myself to smile to hide my disappointment. Soutenu, soutenu, step, step. Double pirouette down to the knee and pose.Â
âGood. Very Good girls.â Madam Petrovna says, clapping her hands in her poised manner. Which meant we could do better. âWaltz of the Flowers to the stage please.â Â
We all curtsy before running off stage. As soon as my body disappears beyond the curtain, I deflate wiping the sweat off my forehead with the back of my hand. My cheeks burn from exertion. The Dance of Marzipan was a little over two minutes long but it was one of the hardest dances in The Nutcracker Showcase as lead.Â
The Waltz of the Flowers orchestration begin shortly after and I watch the performance quietly on my own, swaying from side-to-side en pointe, the malleable shank of my pointe shoes bending with the arches of my feet with each shift in weight. I need to start breaking in my other pair of pointe shoes mom bought for me two weeks ago. These were dead. I glance at my wristwatch. 7:00pm. I sigh, exhaustion weighing down on me. Weâre running late as usual.Â
âYouâre doing great,â a voice whispers near my ear.Â
I whip around, clutching my necklace.Â
âSorry for scaring you!â Mei Wong says.Â
Mei Wong is the Sugar Plum Fairy in the annual showcase of The Nutcracker at Belov Dance Academy. Sheâs also a senior at Hawkins High, most of the girls at the Academy are. I didnât talk to her or anyone much, my shyness getting the best of me. I always had Nancy until she quit last year. Mom says I need to âput myself out there moreâ and make new friends at the Academy. The proposition sounded like a death sentence.Â
I sigh in relief, revealing a small smile. âItâs okay.âÂ
âI just wanted to say, you did so well in your routine. I think Madame Petrovna made a great choice picking you to be lead.âÂ
The audition process for lead was grueling and downright nasty. The girls at the Academy were extremely competitive and I didnât have a competitive bone in my body, choosing to have fun and enjoy the experience. It didnât mean I wanted the part less than the other girls. Deep down, I really wanted it and practiced every day after school until the auditions with help from Nancy, Barbara and Mom on technique and presentation. The voice at the back of my mind constantly nit-picked my skills. Taunting me with cruel words and insecure thoughts. Youâre too short. Youâre not good enough. You canât dance. You will never be like Mei Wong or Sophie Miller. If it werenât for Nancy, I wouldâve made up an excuse to not audition.Â
Two weeks later in the front room of the Academy, I held my head high as I walked to the bulletin board and saw my name across Lead Marzipan.Â
âThank you,â I say. âIt means a lot coming from you.âÂ
âDonât thank me, you deserve it. Have you ever thought about Juilliard?âÂ
Juilliard? Last month, Madame Petrovna announced that Mei Wong applied for Juilliard. That was huge for us small-towners. Unheard of even. Juilliard was Emerald City to us at Belov Dance Academy. A place where hopes and dreams can come true.Â
I shake my head, toying with my pendant. âNo.âÂ
âI think you should. I can definitely see you going there.âÂ
I blink unable to comprehend what I heard. Mei Wong is by far the best dancer at the Academy and she was telling me she can see me at Juilliard. The Mecca of all things art. The magical place far from home. Mei looks at me, concern etching her features and I realize Iâm staring at her.Â
âR-Really?â I stutter.
 âOf course!âÂ
âOh, wow.â I answer, sounding breathless in my ears.Â
Mei nods her head in response and I sense the conversation is over. The silence is awkward and a wave of acid wells up in my stomach. I have so much to ask her, but the words are caught under the lump in my throat. Â
âIâm gonna get ready with Ben. Iâll talk to you later?âÂ
I nod cursing violently in my head for being soâŠawkward. When Mei was far enough, I groan plopping myself down on the floor. Stretching my legs in a straddle split, I watch the girls in Waltz of the Flowers. I donât pay attention because the acid in my stomach turned into butterflies. Juilliard. I never thought about the school until last month and now Mei thinks I should consider auditioning.
You know dad wonât let you go.Â
I lay down on my stomach resting my chin on the back of my hands. The butterflies in my stomach harden to knots. Juilliard is in New York. Dad wouldnât even let me see Prince in Indianapolis. The closer to Hawkins, the better. Dad didnât appreciate change. He was at peace in Hawkins and its simplicity. If he found out his baby girl wanted a life outside of HawkinsâŠIâm sure itâll break his heart and I couldnât stomach the possibility. The look on his face.Â
I shake my head, pushing down the thought. I just started sophomore year and had more than enough time to think about college. Especially Juilliard.Â

Michaela Mabinty DePrince was far more beautiful and graceful than the crap that Hollywood is currently pushing. I don't know why she died but if I had to guess, it may have been because of losing her parents, four years ago. It's despicable that trolls are linking her death to the covid vaccine without knowing any real information.

I am immensely sad to hear about the death of Michaela DePrince, aleha ha-shalom. She was a gorgeous dancer and a committed, influential activist for many causes in the ballet world and the world at large. I can't imagine the pain her family must be feeling after so many losses in so short a span. May her memory be for a blessing (I feel it already is).

Michaela DePrince is dead at age 29 and I just found out from a video that's meant to celebrate Black History Month.

I'm not part of the ballet world. I only knew her from the clip above. Her cause of death is still undetermined according to Wikipedia. Her mother died the day after. Her life was very tragic. How awful to learn about great artists only after they die.

Announcing the death of Michaela DePrinceâs father, Charles DePrince zâl (of blessed memory).
âI want to say thank you to everyone for sending their condolences. It truly means a lot for me and my family. This has been a rough three weeks since my father passed but itâs also been a hard four months having trouble with anxiety, feeling out of control, the safety of black lives and my safety as a black small woman... and not being able to go home to say goodbye to my father because of Covid - 19.
As many of you know this is the second father Iâve lost in my short 25 years on this earth. Iâve lost a lot of people and losing someone who not only gave you a second chance to live but who has always supported you is hard to think that that person is gone. Excepting loss is never easy as I well know, but this loss was really hard for me.
Iâve been so blessed to have so much amazing support from my fans, my family, my family of friends, my team and by my amazing boyfriendâs family and friends.
The reason Iâm posting this message is to let everyone know that Iâm still fighting and supporting all my brown and black beauties. I still need a bit more time to grieve but Iâll be back soon to show how important and how special our brown and black artists are in the dance world.
And to anyone out there especially in the dance world, please use whatever platform you have to educate yourself and others. Black artists have been fighting to feel like they belong in this art form for far too long. Also to all dance companies, please do the same. Donât make excuses...Donât just celebrate us on a specific month. Celebrate us everyday. Show us that we matter. That this isnât a publicity stunt to help cover your mistakes. Show us and educate others that our voices matter.
I support all my black and brown beauties. You matter. We matter. #allblacklivesmatter âđŸđ€â
POTB suggests you follow Michaelaâs advice regarding the dance world. One way to demonstrate support and offer condolences is to donate in Charles DePrinceâs zâl memory. POTB recommends MoBBallet to support Black histories and futures in ballet, AdvocAid SL to support womenâs and childrenâs access to legal support in Michaelaâs country of birth, VluchtelingenWerk Nederlands to support refugees in Michaelaâs country of work, or your local mutual aid network.

Michaela Mabinty DePrince is a Sierra Leonean-American ballet dancer. Born Mabinty Bangura into a Muslim family, she grew up as an orphan in Sierra Leone after her uncle brought her to an orphanage during the civil war. Her adoptive parents were told that her father was shot and killed by the Revolutionary United Front when she was three years old, and that her mother starved to death soon after. Frequently malnourished, mistreated, and derided as a "devil's child" because of vitiligo, a skin condition causing depigmentation, she fled to a refugee camp after her orphanage was bombed. In 1999, at the age of four, she and another girl, also named Mabinty (later given the name Mia), were adopted by Elaine and Charles DePrince, a Jewish couple from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and taken to the United States. She rose to fame after starring in the documentary First Position in 2011, following her and other young ballet dancers as they prepared to compete at the Youth America Grand Prix. She currently dances as a soloist for the Dutch National Ballet. Since 2016 Michaela is a goodwill ambassador with the Dutch organisation War Child, based in Amsterdam. Inspired by a magazine cover of a ballerina she found and kept while in Sierra Leone, DePrince trained as a ballet dancer in the U.S, performing at the Youth America Grand Prix among other competitions. She pursued a professional career despite encountering instances of racial discrimination: aged eight, she was told that she couldn't perform as Marie in The Nutcracker because "America's not ready for a black girl ballerina", and a year later, a teacher told her mother that black dancers weren't worth investing money in. DePrince was one of the stars of the 2011 documentary film First Position, which follows six young dancers vying for a place in an elite ballet company or school, and performed on the TV show Dancing with the Stars. In 2011 she made her European debut in 'Abdallah and the Gazelle of Basra' with De Dutch Don't Dance Division (Dance Company The Hague, NL), The Hague, Netherlands. She came back there a year later to dance The Sugar Plum Fairy in 'The Nutcracker' at the Lucent Dance Theatre. In 2012, she g https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp5dmf_g-ry/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xwmwwxkxzi20
