It's the last two weeks of my PhD and I'm currently revising a section describing how popular narratives have decided that Henry VIII's main attribute is lust, and I used Showtime's The Tudors as one of our contemporary narratives because the show is history-lite and just an excuse for Jonathan Rhys-Meyers to fuck, basically
So now please step into hell with me in episode 2x05 "His Majesty's Pleasure" when Katie McGrath was on the Tudors and her character Elizabeth Webbe meets Henry VIII while she's in the forest with her husband and Henry VIII is like, "Cool, mine now," kisses her, and absconds with her back to the palace
Cut immediately to them boning down and Katie McGrath asking, "Are you really the king of England?"
And Henry VIII going, "No, I was only pulling your leg" and then NUTTING
And like first of all, it's based on a blatantly false rumour that Cromwell himself bebunked
Second of all, they wasted Katie McGrath for THAT
and I guess there is no real point to this except what the fuck
so here's some promo stills with Katie McGrath looking gorgeous per usual and Henry Cavill being like "hehe my chicken nugget"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's so fucking wild that me watching this show in 2010 while I was sick at home with a cold snowballed into me completing two master's degrees and a PhD on Tudor history like what the fuck, Michael Hirst doesn't deserve this influence or legacy

Rewatching Xena with my mother. She’s never seen the show all the way through. Only a couple of episodes.
Quite the experience. We’re up to ‘Prometheus’.
I can’t tell her how much this one is a mind-fuck yet obviously but it makes me visibly cringe to see Xena and Hercules kissing and then Gabrielle and Iolas kissing. I want to tell her that it’s really Xena/Gabrielle and Hercules/Iolas that are the real soulmates.
But I know that would spoil major plot points for her.

Jonathan Frakes Vs. Michael Hurst
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Jonathan Frakes - (Star Trek: The Next Generation) - No text propaganda
Michael Hurst - (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) - With his tousled blond hair, sleek muscularity, energy and charisma, Hurst, in his role as Hercules' buddy Iolaus, immediately stole my attention away from the supposed leading man of the show and kept it for the series' entire run.
Master Poll List | How to submit propaganda | What is vintage? (FAQ)
Additional propaganda below the cut

Actor for Alexander
I've been asked a bunch of times which actor I think could play Alexander. Mostly, I've had to say, "Nobody." And, "Cast a complete unknown."
I still, honestly, think that would be the way to go.
Pulling off Alexander takes not just Peter O'Toole levels of talent but Peter O'Toole levels of charisma. And unconscious arrogance. (He played Lawrence or Arabia in a very Alexander-ish way, below with Omar Sharif.)
Tumblr media
That's the problem. Colin Farrell was, imo, not right for the part. He's a good actor in "small screen" intense sorts of roles. Liked him in Phone Booth. LOVED him in Ondine. I did not like him as Alexander.
Buck Braithwaite is, I think, better, although I have issues with some of how they directed him. Still think William Shatner beat them both in sheer presentation.
Of people NOT cast as Alexander, Michael Hurst (who played Iolaus in the old '90s TV show Hercules) would have been a dream cast for me. Even in the '90s show, he was too old, but man, he's an amazing actor and looked right for the part. Stick that man in a Macedonian cuirass pronto!
Tumblr media
Jon Bon Jovi in his youthful days could totally have played him. Blond hair AND he's (relatively) short. Total command of the stage.
Tumblr media
It's not an accident I picked a rock star.
I believe I've finally found a (current) "name" actor I would not hate in the role (again, depending on how he was directed).
It took seeing him in Elvis, and also in Dune II, but yes, Austin Butler could, imo, play Alexander. He's blond and blue eyed, and he has a long face (which Alexander had). He's really too pretty, and definitely too tall. At 32, he's also too old (especially for younger ATG), although the baby face helps. But he's got the charisma in front of a crowd that many actors (even good actors) don't have. I think he has the emotional range to be both terribly charming and frighteningly fierce.
So if you had to cast a name actor, Austin Butler could pull off ATG, imo.
Tumblr media
But ANY name actor is going to have the same issue ... baggage from prior roles. in that respect, Buck Braithwaite was not a bad choice. He did have film experience, but I'd never heard of the guy before. (He was still too old.)
If Austin Butler were cast as Alexander, could audiences NOT see him as Elvis-Alexander or Harkonen-Alexander? Dubious.
So yeah, I STILL think that finding a talented, YOUNG, hungry, super-charismatic unknown would be the way to go. Alexander should be a young actor between 22-24, imo. They can age him up easily. Harder to age him down, but still possible. Colin Farrell was just 26 at filming, and he still looked too old, imo.
Alexander was a BABY when he crossed to Asia, just 22. He needs to look it, for the full impact of what he did to really knock your socks off.

Everybody I've talked to about this episode have always said they hated it. But I loved it. I loved it because it made me feel validated. I mean this scene especially. You're watching this extremely powerful but sexual woman just going at it with a man in front of her female partner and you see the affect it has on everybody in the room and when you're bisexual you feel validated in your sexual attraction to both gender identities even though there's clearly nothing real there as far as emotional attachment. It's just an empowering scene to me because, again, I just interpret it as a very valid bisexual narrative.
The song played is 'Carnival' by Natalie Merchant by the way. I have the album this song is from and it's one of the greatest albums ever and it's only because of Xena I even discovered this song and album. But because of the copyrights to the song, this episode cannot be found on any of the streaming services. It's always removed from it so a lot of new watchers don't know that this episode even exists.
I suppose it wouldn't be much of a loss given the fans' opinion on it but it's a shame to me because I do really like this episode. It's one of the better episodes from Season 5 which most fans don't like either.

In Hercules in the Maze of the Minotaur, Hercules rescues a disoriented Iolaus from the very strangely gooey trap of the Minotaur.
