"Mr. Barnard, would you please put your shirt back on? I have a boyfriend and I don't think he'd appreciate you being shirtless for me." Y/N said.
Bob Barnard looks at him and smiles. "Ain't nothing wrong with this. I'm sure Brick will understand."
"Sorry, no thanks. I'm actually late for meeting Brick at the gym. See ya!'"

Godzilla: 70th Anniversary will be released on May 8 via IDW Publishing. The 100-page one-shot anthology comic celebrates 70 years of the King of the Monsters.
It features nine original stories by Joëlle Jones (Catwoman), Michael W. Conrad (Wonder Woman), Matt Frank (Godzilla: Rulers of Earth), James Stokoe (Godzilla: The Half-Century War), Adam Gorham (Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant), Dan DiDio (Metal Men), and more.
Five covers will be available: Cover A by E.J. Su, Cover B by Sophie Campbell, plus retailer incentive covers by Jeff Zornow (1:10), Tom Whalen (1:25), and Arthur Adams (1:50).
Since 1954, Godzilla has been King of the Monsters, and what better way to celebrate than with a gigantic anthology of tales that get to the heart of Godzilla’s lasting popularity! From the American Old West to modern Tokyo and beyond, this collection features stories of the King of the Monsters fighting with its allies like Mothra, against old enemies like the terrible Mechagodzilla, and reshaping the lives of all who fall in its path!

What was the point if listening to Safehouse II for the 40th time still makes me cry? WHAT WAS THE POINT?!?
Man, the voice actors really did NOT pull their punches for this episode, huh? (Pun not intended)

Piercings….
The kind of piercings I think everyone has cuz my brain is infested with worms. Mark has an eyebrow piercing because of course he does, he also has like one other piercing on his ear-he used to have the same one on his other ear but it like fell out and closed up or something cuz he’s just like that. Caleb just has his lobes pierced but hardly ever wears earrings but he and Adam got matching ones one day and now he wears those all the time. Adam has a lip ring, a septum piercing, and at least 2 piercings on both ears cuz he’s emo and gay, in college he almost got like a belly button piercing but chickened out, once Caleb caught wind of this his brain chemistry was forever changed. Dr. Bright just has her lobes pierced and almost exclusively wears studs, she is not a dangly earring girlie. Sam doesn’t have any piercings HOWEVER!!!!!!!! Post-AM Archives she gets a nose piercing, Mark tagged along for moral support and it was the tiniest little stud but it makes her feel really cool. Chloe has two piercings on each ear and almost exclusively wears dangly earrings, she also has a septum cuz she’s artsy. Agent Green has no piercings cuz he’s like a slice of white bread. Oliver had his ears pierced in high school and a little into college but he would always snag them in shit so at one point he took them out and just let them close up, one day Mark found all his old earrings and claimed them as his own I also think Caleb snatched some of them for Adam cuz I feel like Adam and young adult Oliver would have the same tastes in jewelry. All of Damien’s piercings were done unprofessionally, he did his lobes himself in his early teens and pierced his lip by himself a little before A Neon Darkness, Neon would make fun of how bad he did piercing himself, she ended up giving him two cartilage piercings and an eyebrow piercing that he ended up taking out after LA and he still has a little scar there, also after seeing Marks eyebrow piercing he kinda wished he had kept it so they could match but realized that was stupid and never thought about it again.

Damien's power is real interesting to think about and I wish it had been written more consistently and intentionally than just "bad guy superpower."
Since TCT implies that Caleb and Damien's powers are actually closely related, and nothing about Damien screams "grew up in a safe and loving environment" to me, I think a lot about how Damien's "dark empathy" if you will could develop as an externalization of his wants out of the necessity to have those needs met since they weren't naturally.
In AND he even describes it as "the bruise (in his feelings) he pokes at" to consciously use his power.
It goes along with a lot of his other problems: difficulty being honest explicitly to hide, aversion to vulnerability, never thinking to ask someone verbally for things because he never learned to trust that people would reasonably respond to his requests.
Then for Caleb to develop first the internalization of emotions, and later the extroversion of them in order to "help" himself and others, because despite being a superpowered person and having a therapist, Joan never actually taught him how to manage strong emotions or set his own boundaries (especially in terms of what he feels is his responsibility for the way others feel-- something she should have addressed back when Caleb was getting to know Adam).
It could have been a much more interesting story that way... instead of being a kind of flat, stagnant moralistic statement on good & bad people.

Kaiju Week in Review (January 7-13, 2024)
Tumblr media
Hard to talk about the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters finale without spoilers, so if you haven't watched it yet, skip ahead to the next item. No flashbacks this time (time dilation aside), just our surviving heroes finally all on the same page to solve a seemingly impossible problem. The momentous reunion between Lee and Keiko got the space it deserved, although I was a touch disappointed that the obvious budding romance between Cate and May got shortchanged. And of course we finally got our first kaiju fight of the series, with Godzilla dispatching the Ion Dragon in a quick but ferocious battle. Fun to see this version of the character take on a low-stakes, low-power challenger for a change. I am routinely frustrated by TV seasons ending on cliffhangers (some of which are then never resolved), but they managed to conclude this season's storyline while setting up the next one, should they have the chance to tell it. Good to have some payoff to the Apex episode earlier in the series. I'm wondering if the series is planning to pivot to Kong now. Since Godzilla: King of the Monsters still hasn't happened yet, the Big G still can't make any public appearances without breaking continuity, which is quite the writing complication.
youtube
@bog-o-bones has blessed us with an excellent feature-length video essay on the history of the kaiju genre. Even for a walking encyclopedia like me, it was fun to have it all laid out so cleanly—the way the three genre pillars of Godzilla, Gamera, and Ultraman rise and fall in popularity, never entirely in sync and consequently keeping us steadily entertained over the decades. So many narratives about the genre in print are decades out of date and/or act like barely anything past the sixties was worth making. This one's up-to-the-minute and gives the seismic influence of films like Cloverfield and Pacific Rim their due. I have my quibbles (last-minute re-records accidentally omitted GAMERA -Rebirth-; the original Mothra deserved more attention), but I acknowledge the amount of works covered here is staggering and every fan would tell this story a little bit differently. Highly recommended.

IDW's biggest Godzilla comic ever is coming in May, a one-shot anthology called Godzilla: 70th Anniversary. It'll have nine stories over 100 pages, with the writers including Joëlle Jones, Michael W. Conrad, Matt Frank, James Stokoe, Adam Gorham, and Dan DiDio. (Some of these folks will presumably be illustrating their comics as well.) The solicitation doesn't offer many plot hints, given that scope: "From the American Old West to modern Tokyo and beyond, this collection features stories of the King of the Monsters fighting with its allies like Mothra, against old enemies like the terrible Mechagodzilla, and reshaping the lives of all who fall in its path!" I'm surprised they're not waiting until November—hopefully it doesn't get delayed into November.
Tumblr media
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will now release in the U.S. two weeks early—March 29. It's taking the place of Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17, which is now undated. I can hardly complain about being able to see it earlier, though the move comes with some risk, as it's now opening the week after Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Tumblr media
SRS Cinema has opened preorders for their Yuzo the Biggest Battle in Tokyo Blu-ray. Or is it Yuzo: The Biggest Battle on Tokyo? That's what the product page says, but on the cover the title's unchanged. Oh, SRS. Anyway, bonus features are scant: just trailers and something called "A Brief Introduction To Ishii Yoshikazu."
youtube
Here's the teaser trailer for Volcanodon, a short film from Taiwan's Creator Union of Tokusatsu. They're aiming to have it uploaded to YouTube sometime this year, and I'll happily watch it. Obviously low-budget, but it's well-shot and it's nice to see a kaiju movie outside of Japan go all-in on practical effects.

Hi !
I just finished the brights sessions and in one of the episode D. Bright said that the atypical represented 4% of the world's population, and that let me wondering, considering that almost every atypical that we encounter in the serie is queer, what percent of the queer community is atypical ?
Apart from that, i love your show and all of the amazing character! I hope you have a great day !
Oooh GREAT question! Lemme do some quick math here...
Okay, according to my universe bible (which is pretty accurate, if not fully comprehensive, I'm sure there's stuff I forgot to write down), there are 29 known and named atypicals across the 7 seasons of the podcasts, excluding the Bright Sides (Season 5, the bonus episodes) and the three books (though there is some overlap) but including Frank Sawyer and Sadie Greenwood, who are, like...atypical-adjacent.
Of those 30 atypicals (presuming I counted correctly (does this post have enough parentheticals yet?)), 14 are definitely canonically queer in one way or another. So, by that logic, nearly half of the atypical population is queer! I have a feeling that number would go up if I were to go through and pull out all the folks from the books and the bonus episodes (which perhaps I will do someday but I don't know the orientation of all the bonus ep characters (bc they were created by other people) and pulling out characters from the books is always a mess because, uh, I do not outline lol) but I also don't know that I can say our little atypical population is fully representative of the global population's queerness? Like flocks to like, so perhaps this a somewhat self-selecting bunch, or maybe there really is just a very high correlation between being atypical and being queer. Dealer's (fanfic writer and headcanon-er's) choice!
Counts under the cut:
Known Atypicals:
characters who are canonically queer are bolded - these are characters who either have queer relationships or talk specifically about their identity. some folks on this list are straight (Frank, Sadie, Marley, Jackson, Blackwell, (though tbf, Sadie is the only person in the whole series who ever says they're straight I'm pretty sure, so who knows)), but there are plenty who we never say one way or another, so anything is possible!
Sam Barnes Caleb Michaels Chloe Turner Frank Sawyer Robert "Damien" Gorham Mark Bryant Rose Atkinson Franklin "Frankie" Meeks Sadie Greenwood Ben Bernard Oliver Ritz Margaret "Mags" Densmore Jackson Crawford Jason "Marley" Beck Seamus Blackwell Michal Sharon Helen Sidney Alice Michaels Alice Rufie Jordan Tobias Sitzer Alexis Neal Cat Cam Vanessa Turner Ira Alex "Blaze" Chen Maguerite Sarai
