*trips and another fiction podcast falls out of my pocket*

hello, it is I, Lauren Shippen, maker of many audio dramas, including the daily @breakerwhiskey. after having so much fun doing that podcast every weekday, I thought "what would be the opposite of doing a daily podcast?" and here we are, with a yearly one. New Year's Day is a yearly podcast about what to make of your life when you live forever and is a collaboration between me and my dear friends Andrew Nowak and Briggon Snow (who you may know from @thebrightsessions). here's the elevator pitch:

Every thirteen years, two old rivals meet on New Year’s Day to discuss their lives in the intervening decade. They lead separate lives but share one earth-shattering secret: they’re both immortal.

new episodes will come out every january 1st - for this first jan 1, we released 3 episodes, so that the main story could get underway, but moving forward it will be only one a year! which is a real change for me obviously! and will certainly be an interesting challenge from a storytelling and audience building standpoint.

on a personal note, this show is a continuation of what I've been trying to do with @breakerwhiskey and what I hope to do with @maxinemilespod later this year, which is to independently produce fiction podcasts. I could go on and on about how tough 2023 was on audio drama - and independent art in general - but suffice to say, having a career as an independent artist is hard. we're making this show - as with @breakerwhiskey - for the sheer love of it, and we hope you love it too.

I've just started the bright sessions - I've been studying so I'm already on season 2 but I am hyperfixated on it already and I honestly can't wait to see what happens next

I was relistening to The Bright Sessions and Adam’s FIRST LINE on the whole show is “what the FUCK is that supposed to mean” ICONIC! That’s iconic as hell. Also him going “oh well that’s good” after Caleb says he likes him.

Adam is gold. The green boys are gold. This episode is gold. This season is gold. The bright sessions is gold. The atypical universe is gold. Lauren Shippen is gold. I love it here.

In traditional mair fashion, I’m joining another podcast fandom 800 years late so who knows if anyone out in the ether will see this but. I’ve been listening to the bright sessions and Caleb has very much become my Favorite which translates to “I want to put him through the Horrors,” but I’m honestly so surprised no one has really beat me to it?

Like, listening to safe house part ii and:

I heard these and I was sooooo ready to find and read all the fics in which he tortured himself and self flagellates. So I was pretty shocked when there wasn’t much?? And like there’s bits and some fics with ptsd and panic attacks, but (maybe I’m just projecting) these little bits (ESPECIALLY the “like I want to be dead”) had me hoping some people had written about him and depression, especially as an empath. And I know Adam has depression and I definitely see that addressed in fics and how it affects Caleb receiving it, but I just think it’d be Neat to see him deal with it coming from himself

I love the college tapes cause the important gist of it is that it's about two stupid men who are incredibly in love with their gorgeous perfect boyfriends and it's awesome

How did you come up with Caleb's power changing for tct? It's not something we encounter in the original series, but holy crap the parallels between Caleb's new ability and Damien and knowing how much baggage and crap that comes with that will never fail to make me nuts. And it's such a cool thing (objectively) that an empath can start to make their power reverse. Where did that idea come from?

(Also did you know that in Caleb's very first episode Dr. Bright asks if he's worried about making someone do something they don't want to do and i literally scream every time i hear that)

GREAT question!

it really came, first and foremost, from knowing that we needed to provide Caleb some internal conflict re: his ability - TCT takes place so many years after the end of TBS, but fundamentally, the Bright universe has to be about struggles with abilities at least to some degree. but with the amount of work that Caleb had put in to understand and control his ability, the conflict couldn't be about that. so what to do? change the way his ability works. we talked about it a bit like a pokemon evolution, and the way that his ability changed was definitely inspired by what we'd done with Damien in the past. in fact, iirc, I think we discussed Caleb going through a similar kind of evolution back after he beat up Damien, but ultimately decided against it at the time.

also, no, I did NOT know that about Caleb's first episode (I know, I know, I wrote it, but I have never revisited the first season really), so clearly it was on my mind since the beginning!

Having the Adam and Caleb playlists on my phone is the BEST (I’m an Apple Music user). Listening to them really makes you feel all of the emotions in the best way (even the sadder songs). I highly recommend checking them out!!!💚😇
