For everything that the Holy Spirits asks is to lay down it is not to rob or take away from us but to refine the things that God would have us walk in such as faith and charity so that we can go about doing goods works before all. All of this comes out of relationship with God.

ROUND TRIP MEETS WITH SATORI JUNK

Formed by Luke Von Fuzz (vocals / synth / keys / theremin/ flute), Chris ( guitars / analog synth / sequencer), Lory Grinder (bass) and Max (drums), Satori Junk have been spreading heavy tunes since 2012. Moved by their passion for fuzz, weedy grooves, space trips and horror movies, the Italian based quartet are known already in the underground world for their uncommon and bewitching sounds, presented to the public with their Doomsday demo record (2012) and their self-titled full-length album (2015). With a new work on the way, we decided to share some words with them, dive in...

How was the band formed back in 2012? You always had the idea to play doomy tunes?

We met each other after a couple of ads on a local website. Each of us was searching for a band to play with. Lory and Luke were close friends since birth, so we started jamming with a complete formation since the beginning. We always wanted to play like a doom band: our first rehearsals were loud jam sessions with doomy riffs played for more than 10 minutes each. Just after a couple of weeks, we got our first song completed: Monsters.

How did the idea of naming yourselves Satori Junk come to life?

Our former drummer, Giacomo, got the idea from a Michael Zadoorian’s novel. He told us about the main character and his fascination for used items. Every second-handed object has a story to tell, its value depends on memories bonded to it, and just the owner knows its real value.

Your record was selected by many, including us, as one of the best releases of 2015. Back then, were you expecting that warm reception from the public?

Definitely not. We started recording with no expectations, aware that it could have been our first and last record. In poker, you would say “All-In!”, and that is exactly what we did: we placed all of our songs in a 70 minutes record. We are thrilled about such good reception. After two years, we are still playing live and sharing the stage with many important bands… and our record is sold-out now! It’s amazing.

What artists do you consider the main influences to your sound?

Lots of. Guitar fuzzy tunes are obviously inspired by bands like Electric Wizard, but we also gather inspiration from immortal bands like The Doors, Jethro Tull and Black Sabbath. One of the greatest peculiarity of this scene is the continuous developing of new contaminations. This mixture of heaviness, psychedelia and classic grooves, gives us the tools to create our music.

Satori Junk are certainly well distinguished by the ability to incorporate the strangeness of theremin harmonies into heavy and massive sounds. What or who inspired you to follow that path?

We started to use synths from the very beginning. We love the way those frequencies arise from the wall of sound, making everything more colorful. Theremin was just one of our little experiments: we immediately realized that it would be a perfect instrument for our music. Its iconic vibe is recognizable in many sci-fi horror movies from the 50ies. Many bands used it before, from Led Zeppelin to Beach Boys, from Hawkwind to Ufomammut. Unbelievably, we found out how that weird and spooky sound is more versatile than we could have imagined.

Do you have any particular venue in mind which you really enjoyed playing? And what about future experiences, what venues would you really love to play at?

Here in Milan there was a little club called Lo-Fi. It was one of the main venues for the Italian Doom scene. We played there with friends like Doomraiser, Giobia, Nibiru and My Home On Trees. We loved that place, it was like a second home. Unfortunately, it closed down last December, leaving us with lots of pleasant memories of the wonderful shows we saw there.

Anyway, times are mature for some touring, and we are trying to arrange something outside our country. There are many venues to discover, lots of festival to play at… it would be nice to play everywhere!

At this moment, you're working on the successor of your self-titled album right? What can we expect from that release? Are there any details you could reveal?

Yes! We just finished the recordings. We started to think about this work about two years ago, right after the release of our first album. During all this time, we continued to experiment a little bit, trying to find our trademark tune. We felt free to explore, always keeping the same balance between heavy fuzzy riffs and psychedelia. Some of our choices were clear since the beginning, while others were taken by instinct during the recording sessions. You could find it a little more psychedelic, but there is also space for heavy powerful riffing.

You certainly are into the worldwide Doom and Heavy Rock music scene. Are there any bands you admire, from the current modern age, who you’d like to play with?

Well, lots of: Electric Wizard, Sleep, Church Of Misery, Blood Ceremony, Conan, Samothrace… and Cathedral if they got back together!

We couldn't help to notice that you're avid fans of horror movies. Could you tell us some of your favorites?

We like lots of sci-fi horror movies from the 50ies (Tarantula, Them, Creature from The Black Lagoon), classic Italian horror movies fromMario Bava, Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento (Black Sabbath, The Beyond, Suspiria)

To wrap the interview up, what have you guys been listening to lately?

We are listening L’Ira del Baccano’s Paradox Hourglass, a great piece of instrumental psychedelic rock with a little of sabbath tunes.
