What better way to kick it off than Wachet! betet! betet! wachet! BWV 70? Wish I would embed the JSB Foundation’s and Rudolf Lutz’s performance of the cantata, with mezzo Marg Oitzinger’s take on the alto aria - “Wenn kömmt der Tag, an dem wir ziehen” - a total blast to listen to.

But here’s the consolation prize of John Eliot Gardiner’s take, which I listened earlier. I came to both his and Lutz’s renditions via the performance of the opening chorus by the teenage attendees of the 2024 New St. Andrews College (Moscow, ID) Conservatory of Music Summer Camp.

Regarding Gardiner’s version, which I initially listened to in full on Spotify, countertenor Michael Chance’s take on “Wenn kömmt der Tag” is a close second to Oitzinger’s, BTW.
