Top Tracks: Miccoli - Night
Never trust anything your mind tells you after 10pm. There’s something about late night introspection that seems to lend itself to worry, self-doubt and melancholy. I’ve learnt that thoughts like that are a sure sign to call it a night, and just hope that the world looks a brighter place in the morning. But there are other schools of thought. Belwood favourites Miccoli make their triumphant…

THURSDAY NIGHT WINE TASTING 6-8PM: PATRICK FROM DOMAINE SELECT
We are thrilled to share a couple wines from the iconic Sicilian producer COS. Three friends founded Azienda Agricola COS, in 1980: Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino Strano. The acronym of their last names is where the name for the winery – COS – comes from. They are the furthest tip of South Eastern Sicily. "The taste of Africa jumps out at you" not just from the various architectural ruins but also more importantly from the vegetation: olive, carob and almond trees and vines abound.
The 2 wines we're tasting from COS tonight are both organic, come from red soil, and vinified similarly with spontaneous fermentation, indigenous yeasts, and aged in concrete...
Ramì IGP 2015
Rami is equal parts Insolia and Grecanico that ferments on the skins in concrete tanks, yielding a beautiful sunrise-orange color and scents of citrus zest, sea breeze, cider and raw almonds. It gains momentum with some air and shows more of its fleshy apricot, honey and chamomile flavors on day two. These amber colored wines with shape-shifting flavors won’t appeal to everyone, but offers fascinating drinking for those seeking a little adventure. The Rami was introduced to Jed by Alfredo Miccoli, the chef at Almar in Dumbo. He would open this wine for the cooks later in the evening – "low alcohol, low stakes, very refreshing." Lucky cooks! $33
Nero di Lupo 2015
Made from Sicily's beloved Nero d'Avola, the Nero di Lupo is a soft and delicate wine that offers cherry, plum and licorice notes on the nose with a dark and earthy and some berry notes on the palate. Like most Italian wines, this one loves being drunk with food. The lower alcohol and soft tannins of this otherwise typically 'big red' makes for a great choice when pairing with spicier foods that still call for red like beef tacos or homemade chili. It would also be a home run with Osso Buco or any eggplant dish, a big ingredient down at the toe of Sicily... $33
And also, tonight, a couple house favorites that we'd like to share with you; they should not be overlooked and kept in mind for everyday drinking!
Domaine Saint Martin MuscadetSèvre & Maine Sur Lie 2015
Possibly one of our very best values. Beautifully clean and stony Melon de Bourgogne from the Muscadet region of the Loire Valley... the perfect and classic pairing to oysters as well as other shellfish. With stock markets crashing and wine prices continuously rising, this little diddy stays happily affordable and delicious. So thank you Saint Martin Muscadet, thank you. Dandy Loves You. $11
Tabarrini Boccatone Montefalco Rosso 2014
This juicy red blend from Montefalco was a request of one of our very best Sagrantino-obsessed regulars... The Boccatone could be considered Sagrantino's little brother but there's nothing little about this Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Barbera blend. A dense and burly wine with chalky tannins and dried herbal notes. Some figgy and meaty qualities too. Drink it with a hefty winter meal for best results. $21

8 Most Embarrassing European Defeats Suffered by British Clubs After Everton's Atalanta Humbling
There have been some humiliating defeats suffered by English clubs in European competition before.
However, Everton's 5-1 loss at home to Atalanta on Thursday may have set the bar for sheer embarrassment on a continental scale.
Throughout the duration of the game Atalanta showed their superiority, and barring a well-taken goal from Sandro Ramirez, the Toffees were a sticky pudding, and it showed in the end result.
However, Everton fans can take some small comfort in the fact they aren't the first team to suffer so greatly in European competition and they certainly won't be the last.
Here are eight times British clubs were on the end of an embarrassing defeat in Europe...
1. Midtjylland 2-1 Manchester United 2015/16
Throughout Louis van Gaal's reign as Manchester United manager, the Red Devils were prone to the odd clanger, failing to recapture the success everyone had become so accustomed to under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Perhaps the one game that truly epitomised the mediocrity of Manchester United under Van Gaal was the Europa League round of 32 defeat to Danish side Midtjylland.
In the first leg of the tie, United took the lead through Memphis Depay. However, it was not to be for the Red Devils as a goal either side of half time for the hosts saw Midtjylland take a 2-1 advantage to the second leg at Old Trafford to the total surprise of everyone.
Humiliation Rating: 6/10
2. Arsenal 1-5 Bayern Munich 2016/17
Arsenal fans are truly sick of the sight of Bayern Munich.
When the were drawn against the Bavarians in the knockout stages for the fourth time in five seasons, although no one could really blame them for turning a little green, seeing as Bayern were responsible for knocking the Gunners out of the Champions League each time they met.
In 2016/17 it was no different, with the German champions seemingly becoming quite accustomed to trouncing Arsene Wenger's men. Going into the second leg of the last 16 tie, Bayern led Arsenal 5-1 and it seemed the German's were keen on making lightning strike twice.
Theo Walcott opened the scoring for the hosts, seeing them go into the break ahead on the night, but after half time it was all Bayern.
Lewandowski levelled it on the night, paving the way for goals from Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa and a brace from Arturo Vidal, as Carlo Ancelotti's men advanced to the quarter finals with a humbling 10-2 aggregate victory.
Humiliation Rating: 8/10
3. Dinamo Bucharest 5-1 Everton 2005/06
Despite finishing in the Premier League top four in the 2004/05 season, Everton's achievements under David Moyes were more than overshadowed by city rivals Liverpool winning the Champions League.
As if things couldn't get any more frustrating for Everton, they suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Romanian side, Dinamo Bucharest in the first leg of the UEFA Cup first round at the start of the next campaign.
Joseph Yobo gave the Toffees something to celebrate, but it was far from enough as the underdogs emerged victorious thanks to goals from Claudiu Niculescu, Ianis Zicu, Florentin Petre and a brace from Florin Bratu.
Humiliation Rating: 9/10
4. Artmedia Bratislava 5-0 Celtic 2005/06
Gordon Strachan's first game in charge of Celtic was certainly a memorable one, but for all the wrong reasons.
In the 2005/06 Champions League second qualifying round, the Hoops came up against little-known Artmedia Bratislava of Slovakia.
On paper it should have been a walk in the park for the Scottish champions, but in the end it couldn't have been any worse for them.
Juraj Halenar was gifted a tap-in to set the hosts up with a 1-0 win at half time, and that seemingly set the precedent for the rest of the match. Going into the second half, Artmedia ran riot, thoroughly humiliating Celtic. Blazej Vascak and Martin Mikulic added to the tally, while Halenar completed an unforgettable hat-trick to complete Celtic's suffering.
Humiliation Rating: 10/10
5. Liverpool 0-2 Benfica 2005/06
Liverpool's 2005/06 Champions League campaign as reigning champions was certainly a disappointing one. Despite winning a difficult group featuring Chelsea, Real Betis and Anderlecht, it was in the last 16 against Benfica where the European champions faltered so massively.
Coming off the back of a 1-0 defeat in Portugal, many were optimistic, believing Liverpool would dispatch Benfica and comfortably progress to the quarter finals of the competition.
This was far from the case however, as Simao (a frequent transfer target of Rafa Benitez) gave the visitors the lead in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Fabrizio Miccoli compounded Liverpool's misery with a strike in the final minute of the game, seeing the holders crash out 3-0 on aggregate.
Humiliation Rating: 5/10
6. FC Basel 2-1 Manchester United 2011/12
The night Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League group stages.
United's early exit came as a shock to many, especially as they finished the 2010/11 Champions League campaign as runners-up to Pep Guardiola's Barcelona.
The 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Swiss champions handed the Red Devils a killing blow, seeing them fail to progress from a relatively easy group, featuring the likes of Benfica and Otelui Galati.
Goals from Marco Streller and Alexander Frei gave the Swiss side a two goals advantage before Phil Jones notched a consolation goal for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, though by then it was too late and last year's finalists were eliminated before the knockout phase.
Humiliation Rating: 8/10
7. FC Porto 5-0 Leicester City 2016/17
Having qualified for the Champions League thanks to their miraculous Premier League victory, Claudio Ranieri's Leicester City were beginning to make a habit of overcoming improbable odds, having secured top spot of their group going into the final fixture of the group stages.
Choosing to rest players in what was an inconsequential fixture, Leicester City set a new record, with Porto's 5-0 victory over the English champions proving to be the largest margin of victory over any English club in the Champions League.
On the night there were four goal scorers with Andre Silva notching a brace as well as Jesus Corona, Yacine Brahimi and Diego Jota getting their name on the scoresheet in an oddly historic night in English football.
Humiliation Rating: 7/10
8. Chelsea 0-2 Besiktas 2003/04
Before the days of Jose Mourinho and in the early days of Roman Abramovich's ownership of Chelsea, the Blues found themselves in the Champions League group stages with Lazio, Sparta Prague and Besiktas.
It was the latter of the group that dealt Chelsea an early reality check, with the London club returning to Champions League football for the first time in four seasons.
In the second game of the group stages, Claudio Ranieri's men hosted Besiktas in a loss that remains their largest margin of defeat in the Champions League to date.
In a bizarre five-minute period in the first half, the Turkish side netted two goals in quick succession, Sergen Yalcin scoring both goals for the visitors. The quick-fire double went without reply and Besiktas came away from Stamford Bridge as one of the two teams to beat Chelsea by two goals in the Champions League, the other being Atletico Madrid beating the Blues 3-1 in 2013/14.
Humiliation Rating: 7/10

Atlético Madrid has a transfer ban, so Antoine Griezmann probably isn't going to Manchester United
With no one coming in, Atléti won’t want anyone to leave.
Much to the club's dismay, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld the transfer ban handed down to Atlético Madrid by FIFA. The Rojiblancos will be prohibited from registering new players until January 2018.
This is obviously bad news for the club, but also for Manchester United and Antoine Griezmann. The Atléti forward was expected to make a move to Old Trafford this summer, but United reportedly ended their interest in signing him.
These two events are probably linked. While Atléti might have let Griezmann go without a fight -- and for less than his release clause fee -- before the ban, they're now unlikely to let anyone leave. United might have liked the idea of signing Griezmann for £60 million or so, but they're probably less thrilled with the prospect of investing £86 million in a transfer fee for him.
United has the money to pay the fee for any player, but financial fair play limits their spending somewhat, so there's opportunity cost to factor into any big purchase. United wants to have the flexibility to move quickly to sign a superstar like Gareth Bale or Neymar if they become available.
There are also a lot of potential variables when it comes to signing those two players, or anyone else of their caliber. If United fails in their pursuit of bigger stars, Griezmann will still be at Atléti with the same release clause in two months. If it turns out their best option is to just pay whatever it takes to get Griezmann, they can do that later.
