During the holiday season, it is common to see images of Santa Claus surrounded by a group of doe-eyed, mica-covered female deer, also known as reindeer. These graceful creatures have become symbols of Christmas, but have you ever wondered why does are often portrayed as being micaceous for receptions for Santa Claus?
The reason for this can be traced back to various mythological and cultural beliefs surrounding reindeer. In many cultures, reindeer were considered to be sacred animals and were associated with fertility, prosperity, and abundance. This belief stems from the fact that reindeer are able to survive and thrive in harsh climates, making them a symbol of resilience and strength.
In particular, the Sami people of northern Europe believed that reindeer had magical powers and were closely connected to their gods. They believed that the shimmery, mica-like substance that was often found on the deer's fur was a sign of their connection to the divine. This is where the idea of "micaceous" reindeer originated.
In addition to this cultural significance, there are also practical reasons for using does in reception for Santa Claus. Female reindeer typically have softer, lighter-colored fur, making them more aesthetically pleasing for holiday decorations. They also tend to be more docile and easier to manage, making them ideal for events such as Santa Claus receptions.
Over time, the depiction of does as micaceous animals for Santa Claus receptions has become deeply ingrained in our holiday traditions. As the image of Santa and his reindeer has become ubiquitous in popular culture, so too has the image of the shimmering, magical does.
So the next time you see a picture of Santa and his reindeer, take a moment to appreciate the symbolism behind the does' mica-covered coats. Not only are they beautiful creatures, but they also hold a special place in our holiday traditions.

● 020 - Chanukah Gelt ●
For my first post here, obviously I have to start with the favorite set I’ve made. It was poured the second night of Chanukah 2021. I’m aware in the grand scheme of Jewish holidays, Chanukah is small, but it’s always been the one I’ve connected most with. It’s a huge part of what made me fall in love with being Jewish as a kid. Hearing my dad tell me about our history and stories was just so special, especially for Chanukah. As someone in the diaspora, with grandparents who tried hard to assimilate for their safety during you know what after already fleeing from elsewhere before it happened, we lost a lot of our traditions and very few holiday celebrations remained. I’m trying to fix that. Anyway, this is just the first of many sets celebrating my culture. I plan to have dice in Hebrew, as well as chonky dreidel dice because I can not spin those bastards for the life of me.
Please do not tag my dice with anything goblin related, thank you!
[Image ID: A nine piece set of resin dice on a backdrop of a pile of gold tin foil covered chocolate Chanukah coins, and a golden menorah laying flat on the coins. The dice are a base of clear and faint blue mica, with gold leaf foil suspended within. They have swirls of white, blue, and gold. The numbers are inked in a bright gold. The shapes of the dice are: Coin, Pyramid D4, two D6, D8, D%, D12, and D20. /End Image ID]

Valentine’s Day headcanons!!
Happy Valentine’s Day all! Here are some headcanons for some of the Black Butler characters and their plans for a great Valentine’s with you.
On another note, I have hit 900 followers! This means so much to me and I’m astonished that so many of you guys follow me for my writing hobby, thank you all so much. But anyway, on with the headcanons!
Masterlist
-
Undertaker
His idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day is somewhat less traditional, as you may expect, but no less thoughtful and memorable. He doesn’t think the overdone going out to some fancy restaurant for dinner is nearly meaningful enough for the pair of you today, so instead, you wake up in the morning with a slight twinge of hurt seeing that your mortician has already gotten up without you on Valentine’s, only to be immediately greeted by him bursting through the door with a tray of your favourite breakfast food and drink. He sits with you while you eat it, complimenting his surprisingly awesome cooking skills the whole way through, then the next thing you know, you’re off on an adventure. He just portals you directly from where you live to the middle of nowhere, then you walk around together until you find what he is looking for; a beautiful alcove in the middle of the woodland, a bright blue pool of clear water leading to a rocky outcropping with just enough room for the two of you to sit side by side. He’s been coming here for centuries, he tells you, and your heart swells at how he’s entrusted you with this place so dear to his heart.
Sebastian Micaelis
Clichés are absolutely the way to go for this demon on Valentine’s Day. He is going to invite you out to a lovely dinner in an expensive restaurant in the middle of London, a place filled with top hats and tailcoats. He himself will be wearing his finest, of course, a pressed black suit with his own tailored hat. He would like to choose something for you to wear as well, if you will let him, something in a colour that suits you yet makes you stand out and that he knows you will feel comfortable wearing. It is quite late when you leave for the restaurant in all your finery, arriving via cab and being shown to your reserved seats, the best in the house in your opinion, immediately. Dinner is an ornate, candlelit affair, with Sebastian encouraging you to have whatever you like - no expense is too much for his darling on such a special day. After dinner, when you get home, there are more candles and rose petals adorning every available surface, another beautiful bouquet of flowers (he already gave you one that morning) and your favourite sweet food is on the table.
Grell Sutcliff
Her perfect Valentine’s is more is Sebastian’s direction than Undertaker’s. She will go all out for this celebration, wanting you to be happy but also dramatically claiming that this holiday is her absolute favourite and she wants it to be perfect for you. She takes you out to a romantic dinner of course, wearing her finest crimson outfit, hair curled and styled to perfection. If she can get you to wear any red at all, especially something that matches her, she will be completely over the moon. Dinner is just as extravagant as Grell’s personality, again she spares no expense. The food is positively divine and it is very late by the time you leave, but you notice quickly that Grell isn’t walking back towards your apartment. It turns out the night isn’t over yet - she takes you on a beautiful starlit walk alongside the river Thames, right through the centre of London. Hoe exactly you can still see the stars with the lights reflecting off of the buildings and into the water you don’t know, but the whole thing just seems ethereal and it’s not an experience you will soon forget.
William T. Spears
Valentine’s Day with William is neither at one extreme of the spectrum or the other. Dispatch doesn’t much care what human holiday it is today, the reapers still have to go to work (Grell just bunked off but William is too good a worker to do that). Still, he makes sure not to leave even a second later than absolutely necessary and you woke up to your morning coffee all prepared, just needing the addition of the hot water. When he gets home, he tells you - ever so slightly bashful - that as a surprise, that he booked a reservation at a little, quiet restaurant that you often frequent together. It is certainly one of your favourites and you’re so glad he’s made the effort even with his busy schedule - what it must have taken for him to even leave work on time is not lost on you. He gives you a beautiful little card and a bouquet of fresh flowers as well, which of course you immediately arrange in a vase, thrilled at the prospect of finally going out for dinner again with your beloved partner.

When I was out at my appointment yesterday, people kept telling me ‘Merry Christmas’ and every time it caught me by surprise. And then when I went into the store and picked up meds, I was surprised that ‘You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ was playing. Like I legit kept forgetting Christmas was happening.
I don’t know WHY. I got my nephew a Darkwing Duck plush since he’s been watching DWD on disney plus a lot. I’ve been watching specials with Mica. Yet my brain hasn’t processed that it’s HERE. That it is the holiday season.
Weird.

Completely Harmless Appendix 7
Appendix: Rainbow Week
1.     Rainbow Week/Luck Day/Valentine’s/JoJo Siwa/Red String Trail Ride
Holidays, in my opinions, should be events. My favorite thing the first time I played in Star Stable was around Christmas and we had all these Christmas Quests to decorate the county. Then they took that out and it was blah. So, I wanted to bring that Christmas style feeling back where you’re going around and decorating the county or your area of the county and then you have stuff to do during the actual festival.
Tumblr media
You can do holidays one of three ways, you do it like Christmas where there’s a set thing every year. Or you can it so that the holiday has progressive story, so each time it comes around (say Fashion Week) a little more of the story is unlocked and you can only do new story if you’ve progressed through the old. That way you don’t have NPCs talking about current story lines when the new players haven’t gotten that far in the story.
Or, you work your plot into the holidays. And then as the plot progresses, you’ll have more holidays as the years of your plot move forward. However, this requires that you have all of your story and map completed before launching the game. I chose number three for the story because it was convenient writing wise. (For Mystic Riders we go with option one.)
Tumblr media
To Rainbow Week in particular, Rainbow Week was something they introduced in 2019 to “replace” the Fortuna Festival, which they only did one or two years. It was supposed to be celebrating friendship? Basically, what happened, was the rainbows crashed and that’s about it. (I am not touching Mica. Nope. Nope.) They might have had the parade with the Bobcats. But there weren’t any quests anymore. The quests were all about setting up the parade route, decorating, and helping Tan make the outfits. Which were cool in a way except the Bobcats were foisting their duties on you because of nails. Maybe they took them out because they’re trying to change the Bobcats story image? I dunno. We older players know the truth.
And then there is Valentine’s Day which also celebrates friendship and love where they have the group race. There used to be quests about making teddy bears and a chocolate and berry cake. Then you had the letters with Derek. They removed those and that was sad. So I put them back in.
Tumblr media
Then there is the Red String Trail Ride which you do in the “spring” and celebrates Friendship. Which was a trail ride with some random events programmed into it. It appropriates (yes, appropriates) the Chinese story about the red string that connects people’s hearts. I’m not really a fan of appropriation. It’s in the game. I can’t really do anything about it.
Lastly, they had Jojo Siwa in the game as a licensing gimmick. She likes rainbows and sings about friendship. They had you find bows in Moorland in order to trade them in for items. I expanded this across the entire county and then also had the player hand out bows in order to spread the news of friendship and love and Jojo Siwa to people in the district so they’d come watch Jojo. (Something that SSO didn’t do.)
Tumblr media
I mashed all of these together because they share the same theme to make Rainbow Week more exciting. This meant adding in more musicians and having fun treats, and being able to make crafts for the housing we don’t have yet. (I guess it’s going to come sometime in the next decade.) Fortuna Festival gave clues that these holidays are Club led so that’s why I ran with the clubs doing the festivities. And having things like special crafts, charms for a friendship bracelet and the selfie walls would encourage everyone to travel all over the county to collect things. Plus having things like the treasure hunt and of course, Chaun and his rainbow spices things up.
Instead of having Chaun give random items, I instead gave him a shop so that everyone can get the items they want. The other idea could be to use the same mechanic as the big pumpkins and the goats, and have a lottery system. But I really do prefer shops more.
Tumblr media
Brogan is my own invention. (As is Fill-E, the all girl j-pop band.) His game mechanics would be similar to having Spirit in the game. He shows up somewhere in the area after the rainbow crashes and you catch him and he’ll give you a task. That task rewards you with rainbow gold and reputation points until you reach admired with Brogan. Once you reach admired, you can take him to a Chaun and he’ll open a shop for you to exchange your rainbow gold for items with Brogan. His items will be different than Chauns.
And of course, once the decorations go up, they have to come down.
Tumblr media
I also included an Art Show for Fort Pinta and a Flea Market for Firgrove. (The Farmer’s Market would continue as usual except it’d be decorated. Same for the Horse Market.) These two areas could have arts and crafts that are rainbow themed and available for the player to purchase again for home decoration or jewelry or clothes, etc and so forth. There could also be special rainbow themed makeup going on at the salons. There could be shops featuring rainbow themed clothes, but they aren’t paying me that much to do that for free.
FOR THE ACCOMPANYING IMAGES PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE MY WATERMARK AND CONTACT INFORMATION. THANK YOU. I get it. Some of you might get excited and want to see this stuff in the game, especially the clothes, tack, and pets. However, the only way I want to see this in the game is if I get paid for it. If I see it in the game and I’m not paid for it, there will be hell to pay. You think I’m salty. I’d be angry. Personally, I’m not going to send this info to SSO. If you do, leave my contact information there! Don’t give them any excuses to steal.
Now, I’ll know you haven’t read this note if you leave me comments about how ‘salty’ I am about the game and if I hate it so much I should do something else. I am doing something else. It’s called Mystic Riders MMORPG Project. Mystic Riders however is a very baby phase game. You can check out our plans on the game dev blog. (Skills, Factions, Professions, Crafting, Mini-Games, 25+ horse breeds!) If you know anyone who would be interested and has money or contacts about game making, direct them to the blog.

To the man who did and will always do anything for me..
“Yung out of nowhere pag gising ko, may super long messages ka sakin stating how much you love me, and how hard you are praying for me.
Lol.
And then things happened. Everything change dahil umayaw ako. Sumuko ako.
Yung mga panahon na you’re still reaching out for me kahit committed kana after kitang iwanan. Na ayaw mo pa rin sumuko. Na I still have and will always have a special place in your heart. Until third year College, already had my first boyfriend. Oo, dapat ikaw. Oo, ikaw sana. Then got hurt, lot of heartaches too, but learned a lot of lesson from it. And that’s the time I prove to myself that I am still looking for you, still waiting for you, too. Regrets.
And now, you’re still doing the same after all. You’re still giving and doing your best.
Naalala ko yung pag nasa school ako, tapos susunduin mo pa ko after work mo para lang mahatid ako sa bahay. But this time, dun kana sa Angel’s Burger naghihintay, mas malapit. Hahaha.
Yung busy kami during our Arki Week and it’s super late tapos di pa ko nakakakain. Pumunta ka pa ng school para lang dalhan ako ng pagkain, and to remind me na wag na ko masyado magpagod.
Yung nagapply ako ng work, final interview ko na inabot til 1AM at ikaw galing work, from Fairview to Makati tapos naghintay ka from 7PM hanggang sa matapos ako. And heard nothing, walang kahit isang word ng pagrereklamo that you just waited for almost 6 hours. I saw how tired you are, and still saw your beautiful smile hanggang sa maihatid mo ko sa bahay.
We’ll exchange goodbyes and goodnights.
Yung tatawagan mo si Mama or Papa para gisingin ako at hindi malate sa work and all your reminders especially kapag hindi mo ako nahahatid.
At sobrang naappreciate ko sila to see that they’re happy for us also, and to my parents as well.
You still have their trust, noon pa man.
And like we were in High School, nakakatanggap pa rin ako ng super long messages from you stating how much you love me, and how hard you are praying for me.
We both know how it feels na malayo sa isa’t isa. How we tried to reach for each other.
That’s some of memorable things u’ve done for me, at maraming marami pa.”
***
And this man respects me a lot. Not just me, but also my family. Thank you so much Babs. You are also worth the wait, worth praying for and worth keeping 💕 You deserve too all the efforts, sacrifices, and everything.
It was you, and it is still you. I’ll always be grateful to God for having you, again.
Iloveyousomuch Porsyunkula! 🌻
They all know how long we waited for this ✨

Handcrafted Projects for Christmas & the Holiday Season  Christmastime is where most crafters truly shine — it is the time to create beautiful handmade gifts, lovely wrapping and cards, and artful decorative pieces. In this upcoming issue of A Somerset Holiday, we are aiming to create an inspirational, instructional companion for the holiday crafter with an abundance of simple projects, covering everything from artwork and gifts, to creating the packaging and tags labeling each memorable gift item. We invite you to join in the celebrations and submit your very favorite holiday-themed artwork, gifts, and more. Projects that might spring to mind are Christmas cards, gift wrapping paper, wreaths, advent calendars, and quick and easy gift ideas (i.e. face scrubs, gift baskets, imaginative gift card holders, stocking stuffers, candles, food/beverage ideas, and so on). Start a lasting tradition by giving gifts straight from the heart and made with your own hands. Please submit your most festive DIY projects to be considered for this stunning, full-color 144-page publication. Deadline: Every May 15th.
A Little Bit Handmade  The holidays are a very busy time, so it is not always easy to have the time to make something by hand. In this department, we aim to take a purchased item and personalize it in some way. For instance, taking a thrifted coffee mug and turning it into a hot cocoa kit, making a scarf in 20 minutes or less from a yard or two of fabric, or altering a Moleskine journal for the recipient with their monogram in a faux-calligraphy style. These are creative, inexpensive, simple projects that ideally take 30 minutes or less to make. Deadline: Every May 15th.
  ~Artwork by Melony Miller Bradley
Somerset Life aims to demonstrate how easy it is to add a touch of beauty to our daily lives, whether it is through a simple craft project, or an inspiring essay that shares how to find the beauty that already exists. Our mission is simple: make the ordinary extraordinary. For those looking to be a part of this bestselling publication, we have a number of ways to do so. We are currently looking for artwork submissions in the following categories:
Locales of Intrigue This special department features stories about truly unique stores and boutiques across the globe. Stores that would like to be featured in this department are asked to submit digital images of the store with a brief written query to the Editor-in-Chief at [email protected]. If the submission is accepted, professional hi-resolution digital images (300 dpi at 8″ x10″) will need to be furnished by the store. Deadline: Ongoing.
Life Creative Spaces Where do you create? Whether it’s a small table or breakfast nook, cleared-out closet, or an actual room dedicated as your creative studio, we want to peek inside. If you think your creative space is something that Somerset Life readers would like to learn more about, please submit digital images of your space with a brief written query to the Editor-in-Chief at [email protected]. If the submission is accepted, you will be asked to furnish professional hi-resolution images (300 dpi at 8″ x 10″). Deadline: Ongoing.
Miscellany Sometimes, an image of something lovely is all we need to feel inspired. Have you taken a photo of something that makes you feel inspired? Perhaps it is a photo of your collection of vintage handkerchiefs. Or an old stack of books. Or your treasured stash of ribbons. Please submit your favorite digital images (5″ x 7″ @ 300 dpi) to be considered for Somerset Life’s special Miscellany department to the Editor-in-Chief at [email protected]. Deadline: Ongoing.
Artful Kits We all love to collect papers, ribbons, embellishments, and other bits and bobs. More fun than collecting specific elements is finding creative ways to juxtapose the pieces together to create unique kits. Whether you create them to give away or to sell or offer to students in a workshop setting, we’d like to see your favorite kits. Please send in kit samples directly to the Editor-in-Chief as outlined in the Submission Guidelines. Deadline: Ongoing.
Creative Living Ideas In each issue of Somerset Life we share 10 Creative Living Ideas, and we show quick and easy ways to add a touch of beauty or creativity to your life, or perhaps someone else’s. Maybe you have a clever way of packing a sack lunch, or you have a developed a creative way of saying “Thank You” to a friend. Please send in samples directly to the Editor-in-Chief as outlined in the Submission Guidelines. Deadline: Ongoing.
The Magic of Friendship Bracelets Where would we be without our friends? We all need a tribe with a common goal where the bonds are strong and the friends are amazing. One way to show your friendship is by creating a gift for someone special, and this got us thinking about friendship bracelets. This symbol of friendship given from one friend to another has been around for a long time. They’re often handmade from embroidery floss or thread, but we thought it would be fun to elevate the ordinary friendship bracelet and see what our talented readers can come up with. Maybe add some pearls? How about tying on tiny words of inspiration? We’re looking for beautiful friendship bracelets that celebrate not only friends, but an authentic and creative life! Deadline: May 15, 2018
MICA INSPIRED! Who doesn’t love mica? Johanna Love showed us how some pretty gold mica flakes could add glittery pizzazz to nails in her article in our Jan/Feb/March 2018 issue, but we know the use of mica goes much further! Mica flakes add instant luminosity and sparkle to any project as well as texture and dimension. They come in different colors from silver, white, frosted to mulberry, charcoal, and a range of tones in between. This versatile product can be layered, mixed with paint, incorporated into snow globes, added to cards or mixed-media projects and much more. What can you do with mica flakes? Show us how you can incorporate them into artwork that personifies a Somerset life! Deadline: May 15, 2018
