The Full Story of the Andretti Indycar Team
On September 27th, 2024, Jay Penske's sportico.com website reported that Michael Andretti was relinquishing ownership of Andretti Global and stepping back into a strategic role.
Michael Andretti, who spent over twenty years racing in Indycar in his own right and spent just as long as a team owner, was stepping away from team ownership, handing the reins to investor Dan Towriss.
Now, a lot of people have speculated as to why:
Some people say that Michael and Dan had a falling out earlier this season and Michael ultimately left.
Others say that Michael promised Dan an entry into Formula One, and now that the teams have firmly blocked that, Dan demanded some kind of return on his investment.
Others yet think that Michael stepping away is a way to smooth over the friction between Michael and the F1 team bosses, potentially giving an avenue for the Towriss-led Andretti Cadillac to make it into F1 after all.
There is also, you know, the possibility that Michael Andretti was being entirely truthful. He simply wants to step back to a more strategic role rather than dealing with team ownership.
We don't know the real answer though.
Nor is it the topic of this blog.
Instead, this blog is a retrospective on Andretti as a race team, particularly in Indycar. How they started, how the Andrettis got involved, some of the high points, and what the team means to Indycar now that, in one way or another, it won't even been the same.
The story starts in 1993, when Barry Green (a senior Australian engineer who worked with teams like Forsythe and Kraco) and Gerry Forsythe himself (who had run an Indycar team in the early and mid 80s) partnered with Player's cigarettes out of Canada to create a Formula Atlantic team, with Quebecois drivers Claude Bourbonnais and Jacques Villeneuve.
Claude finished second in the standings that year, Jacques just behind in third.
With a promising debut, the team moved up to CART in 1994, fielding Jacques Villeneuve in a Player's sponsored car. Jacques would finish second at Indy and take his debut win at Road America, to finish sixth in the standings and snatch rookie of the year.
Come 1995, the team experienced an ownership split. Barry Green kept Players and Villeneuve initially, while Gerry Forsythe started his own team with Teo Fabi - who had previously driven for Forsythe in 1983 - as the driver.
That didn't stop Team Green from continuing to be successful.
Villeneuve won the season opening Grand Prix of Miami, the Indianapolis 500, Road America yet again, and Cleveland to win the championship.
All of this was enough for Frank Williams to snatch Villeneuve out of Indycar and bring him over to Formula One.
Furthermore, Forsythe secured the Player's sponsorship for his own team for 1996, hiring Greg Moore to drive.
Meanwhile, Team Green had a pair of mediocre seasons in 1996 and 1997, with Raul Boesel and Parker Johnstone, respectively, however, by 1998, the team was ready to compete.
Barry's brother Kim joined in as co-manager of the team, KOOL cigarettes signed up as sponsor for 1997, and they switched to Honda engines that same year.
Then for 1998, they brought on Penske's Paul Tracy and Hogan's Dario Franchitti as drivers. Paul and Dario in those white, green, and gold KOOL cars would be defining drivers in those golden era of CART.
Dario struck first, winning Road America, Vancouver, and Houston in 1998, finishing third in the standings.
Come 1999, and Dario won Toronto, Detroit, and Surfers Paradise, whilst Paul Tracy won at Milwaukee and Houston. Dario finished second to Juan Pablo Montoya on countback, whilst Paul Tracy finished third.
This was Team Green's finest hour.
Paul Tracy won at Long Beach, Road America, and Vancouver in 2000 to finish fifth, but Dario struggled, and more than that, the two gained a reputation for crashing into each other. They crashed into each other at Houstin in 1998 (which Dario won), Gateway in 1999, Chicago in 2000...they were quite literally doing it once a year.
That wasn't the end of it either, since it happened again in Denver in 2002.
Anyway, also in 2001, Michael Andretti enters the story.
Now, Michael had worked with Barry Green at Kraco, but after that, Michael joined his father at Newman/Haas. From 1989 to 1992, Mario and Michael were teammates, and when Mario retired at the end of the 1994 season, it paved the way for Michael to return to Newman/Haas through the end of the 2000 season.
However, Michael wanted to race in the Indianapolis 500, and Newman/Haas was a CART diehard team. Thus, in 2001, Michael partnered with Motorola, Kevin Savoree, and Kim Green to create a satellite entry in the form of Team Motorola.
Michael won Toronto in 2001 and Long Beach in 2002 with Team Motorola, while also finishing 3rd and 7th, respectively, at Indianapolis in those years.
For 2002, Paul Tracy and Dario joined him, in 7Eleven sponsored cars - really a business-to-business (B2B) deal between KOOL and 7Eleven, effectively saying "come buy your cigarettes here!" - and Paul Tracy was pulling off a pass for the lead on Helio Castroneves as the caution came out.
Helio was deemed to have been ahead as Paul complained on the radio, saying that it was the IRL trying to cheat a CART driver out of the win, but the race finished under caution and Castroneves won his second consecutive Indy 500.
For 2003, Michael bought out Barry, with Kim Green and Kevin Savoree initially staying on as smaller partners.
Thus, Team KOOL Green became Andretti Green Racing, and they moved over to the IRL Indycar Series.
Dario Franchitti remained in the #27 car, picking up the Motorola sponsorship, while the 7Eleven sponsorship led to the other two cars becoming the #7 and the #11. The #7 would be driven by Michael Andretti through the end of the Indianapolis 500, while the #11 would be taken over by Tony Kanaan - Paul Tracy had refused to move over to the IRL, so he signed for Forsythe in CART instead.
Dan Wheldon, in a Jim Beam sponsored #26 car, would effectively replace the retiring Michael Andretti after the Indy 500.
In 2004, with the team adding on Bryan Herta in a fourth car - the XM Satellite Radio sponsored #7 - Andretti Green Racing would become the Indycar superteam. They had more cars than anybody else, their Honda engines were better than the Toyota and Chevrolet engines the competition were running, and the likes of Wheldon, Kanaan, and Franchitti would go on a tear.
Tony Kanaan would win the 2004 championship, Dan Wheldon finished second.
Dan Wheldon won the 2005 championship, Tony Kanaan finished second.
Also in 2005, the team achieved two massive milestones.
First, they swept the top four positions at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The race in Florida was the first IRL event on a road or street circuit rather than an oval, and Andretti dominated it.
Dan Wheldon first, Tony Kanaan second, Dario Franchitti third, and Bryan Herta fourth.
Second, they won their first Indianapolis 500, capping off a career year for Dan Wheldon.
With Wheldon going to Ganassi for 2006, while Chevy and Toyota pulled out - meaning Penske and Ganassi now had those same Honda engines that Andretti was so successful with - marked a bit of a stumble for the team.
Nevertheless, with Marco Andretti replacing Wheldon in the #26, Michael returned for the Indianapolis, the father-son duo finishing second and third, narrowly losing out to Penske's Sam Hornish.
Still, Tony Kanaan won at Milwaukee and Marco won at Sonoma.
2007 marked a return to form, with Dario Franchitti winning at Indianapolis, Iowa, Richmond, and Chicagoland to take his first championship. Five wins for Tony Kanaan ensured he finished third in the standings as well.
Also, Danica Patrick took over the #7 car, putting a woman in top machinery in Indycar for the first time. She'd finish seventh that year, behind Dario and Tony, but ahead of eleventh placed Marco.
In 2008, Tony would win at Richmond to finish third in the standings again, however, the biggest story around Andretti Green Racing that year was Danica Patrick winning at Motegi. Now, a lot of people diminish this win, saying that half the Indycar world was in Long Beach for the the final Champ Car race.
However, those people don't seem to say that for all the wins that Tony, Dario, and Dan Wheldon got for that team.
Furthermore, at this point, the IRL had won the war. Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves, all the Andretti guys...sure it wasn't a peak field, but neither was Champ Car at this point. There is a reason that the two series had no choice but to merge.
In any case, the team was on a bit of a decline as well, with the team going winless in a 2009 season where Danica beat out TK by seven points to be Andretti's top driver that season, finishing fifth.
Ryan Hunter-Reay would join the team in 2010 - now rebranded from Andretti Green Racing to Andretti Autosport - and lead them back towards the front of the field, eventually winning the championship in 2012 and the Indianapolis 500 in 2014.
Meanwhile, James Hinchcliffe won at St. Pete, Sao Paulo, and Iowa in 2013 to give the team that one-two punch again.
2015 was another struggle, only winning a single win - Detroit Race 1 with Carlos Munoz - but the team bounced back in 2016, with Alexander Rossi winning the Indianapolis 500 in the Andretti/Herta #98.
Takuma Sato in the #26 would give the team back-to-back Indianapolis 500 victories with his win in 2017, the first ever for a Japanese driver.
Then in 2018, wins at Long Beach, Mid-Ohio, and Pocono, Alexander Rossi would finish second in the championship.
Wins at Long Beach and Road America in 2019 would give Rossi another title challenge, finishing third this time.
Rossi - and Andretti proper - would go winless in 2020, but the affiliated Harding-Steinbrenner car of Colton Herta won the second race at Mid-Ohio.
On top of wins at COTA and Laguna Seca in 2019 before Harding-Steinbrenner joined up with Andretti, this marked Colton's ascendancy at the team his dad once drove for. He would finish third in the standings in 2020.
He won St. Pete, Laguna Seca, and Long Beach in 2021 but regressed to fifth, whilst Rossi, Hunter-Reay, and the returning Hinchcliffe all went winless.
A win for Herta at the first IMS Road Course race and a win for Rossi at the second marked a somewhat better 2022, but with Penske and Ganassi continuing their dominance of the series, while Arrow McLaren emerged as best of the rest, it marked a serious decline for Andretti. Especially once Rossi left Andretti to join an expanding Arrow McLaren team.
To add insult to injury, Rossi in ninth was Andretti's best car in 2022.
This got even worse in 2023, when Rossi's replacement, Kyle Kirkwood won at Long Beach and Nashville, but he was eleventh, and Colton Herta was tenth.
This was bad.
The team was making a lot of noise about trying to get into Formula One, and it even rebranded to Andretti Global as part of those efforts, but how were they going to build their own car for Formula One when they weren't even doing well in a spec series like Indycar?
More bad news for 2024 as DHL left the #28 car - most recently driven by Romain Grosjean - to sponsor Alex Palou for 2024. Andretti Global went from four car super team in 2005 to mid table in 2024 - they needed to consolidate resources if they wanted to get back to the front.
So they did.
Colton Herta in the #26 and Kyle Kirkwood in the #27 remained, but the #28 was taken over by Marcus Ericsson, while the #29 of Devlin DeFrancesco went away entirely. The four-car team was down to a comparatively sleek three, and they hoped to consolidate resources.
Well, wins at Toronto and Nashville Superspeedway ensured Colton Herta finished second in the standings, while Kyle Kirkwood was seventh, and Marcus Ericsson was fifteenth.
The team bounced back somewhat, and things looked good in the offseason.
Sure, Andretti seemed no closer to joining Formula One than they had before, but they consolidated resources to improve in Indycar, while getting ready to move into their fancy new headquarters in Fishers, Indiana.
There was some grumblings that two teams held out on signing Indycar's charter agreement all the way up until the final moment, but it wasn't exactly clear who the holdouts were.
Then Michael Andretti announced he was stepping back at Andretti Global. That...was interesting. That could mean he was the hold out, or maybe not.
It could mean that Towriss seized control of the team, or maybe not.
It could be a ploy to win over the Formula One teams, or maybe not.
It's unclear what will happen to Andretti Global going forward, but this is the story of what has happened to Andretti thus far.

pairing: Minho x gender neutral!reader genre: fluff, slice of life warnings: cursing, alcohol + underage drinking (be responsible kids) word count: 4.7k notes: — changes made to skz ages: 00 line + jeongin are all graduating high school, mc/changbin/minho/chan have all just graduated college — for the record I don't hate miami as much as this fic might suggest, I'm just really fucking bored here Miami is boring. Minho is less boring. Put two and two together and this city still sucks, but maybe having Minho is enough.
Stray Kids Masterlist
"I'm bored."
Minho doesn't even bother looking at his camera. "You've said that maybe ten thousand times in the past half hour."
"Yeah, because I meant it." You roll over your bed again. "I'm so fucking bored."
His sigh crackles through the FaceTime call. "Well, it's not like it's New York City, where we could do fucking everything."
"But it's Miami. Sunny Miami." Minho barks out a sharp laugh and you do an impeccable job of ignoring him. "Beach, sun, swamp. People come down here for vacation all the fucking time, there must be something to do."
He holds one hand up to the camera. "Everglades." One finger down. "Wynwood." Another finger. "Some nature estate." A third finger. "Beach." A fourth. And then, a long pause.
"Some other nature estate?" you offer.
Minho flaps his hand at the screen. It's his laptop screen, which you know because he's been glued to his phone for half of the FaceTime. "They're all the same and you know it."
Unfortunately, you do know it. There are only so many times you can walk Vizcaya or sit by the Deering Estate before they all end up coalescing into one big mush of ocean and grass in your brain. Beautiful the first few times. Pretty the next. Then just part of the landscape. Some might say you sound ungrateful, but you've lived here for eighteen damn years. You think you have a right to complain. Besides, how many times can you go to the beach before sand sticks itself so far up your ass that you decide you're never wandering into the ocean's depths again?
It's your turn to sigh this time. "So what are we doing tomorrow? Food? Boba?"
Minho's eating something now, so his voice comes out muffled. "What else is there to do?"
It takes too much effort to roll your eyes so you just stare at the ceiling. "Pick me up at twelve."

. . .
Seungmin is also there when you and Minho enter the Chipotle, so you end up sitting with him. He looks appropriately done with life, as befits a high school senior. "Oooo, skipping class," Minho singsongs before flicking him in the back of the head.
"Shut up," he mutters, slapping Minho's hand away. Or he would have if Minho wasn't so fast. "It's all useless now, I've already gotten into college."
You just laugh, dumping your Chipotle bowl in front of him. "Fail your AP exams and I disown you as my son," you warn cheerily. You nearly hit your head on one of the cheap fluorescent hanging lights as you sit down on the tall stool. There are fingerprints smeared all over the metal countertop and the cracked covering of the stool scratches your thighs. Maybe it was a mistake to wear shorts today. "What are you going to say if this goes on your permanent record?"
Seungmin gives you the stink eye. "Like they'll stop the valedictorian from graduating," he retorts. "And when the fuck did you two get back? I didn't realize you'd graduated already."
"Aww, missed us?" Minho beams, his eyes and mouth all turning into little slits that make him look far more threatening than he is. Actually, he looks like that meme of the cat staring straight at the camera that looks like it's smiling but its mouth is basically just a line with the slightest curvature at both ends. Felix would know what you're talking about. "We got back two weeks ago."
"And you didn't bother to tell us?" Seungmin sniffs.
"We did," Minho says. "You just don't check the group chat."
"You haven't even tried to congratulate us." You wipe away an imaginary tear.
He rolls his eyes, but you detect a little smile on his face that isn't just your own delusion. "Congrats, or whatever."
"I knew you cared!" you cheer, reaching over the table to give him a hug, despite half of the restaurant glaring at you while Seungmin attempts to fight you off. Minho just watches the whole scene unfold, his usual Cheshire Cat half smile stuck on his face.
Seungmin leaves soon after. You make a dramatic plea for him to stay, complete with a seated reenactment of Caesar's stabbing with Minho as Brutus and by proxy Seungmin, because Seungmin leaving is akin to Brutus stabbing Caesar who is you, or whatever. "No, my favorite child, don't go," you wail even as the workers start looking your way. "I'll buy you boba."
Minho snorts. "What are you, his parent?"
"What are you, a fucking loser?"
The offer of boba doesn't work because Seungmin has physics during his last period so he needs to be back in time to catch that class or his teacher will actually probably write him up (she's an evil old woman), and for all his skipping class Seungmin is still a mostly-goody-two-shoes who doesn't actually want anything horrific on his permanent record. So you and Minho finish your bowls alone with a side of healthy bickering, and then you walk back out into the disgusting heat to Minho's shitty little Toyota Corolla.
You almost don't catch the keys before they hit you in the face. "You drive," Minho says, opening the passenger side door.
"I'm not fucking driving." You drop the keys on his lap. "I only have a permit and I'm not on your stupid car's insurance."
"And I am an adult over twenty one with a license, and I trust that if you fuck up my car, I can throw you under the bus and say I was being kidnapped." He throws them back at your face and you screech. "You need to practice, so drive."
Minho wins because he's already in the passenger seat and the heat is sapping away your will to live, which includes your will to wrestle Minho out of that seat so you can take his place. So you end up in the driver's seat, sweating even more because the air conditioning in this car has been busted since last summer, and then you fudge your way out of the parking lot and down the road.
"If you say a word I will fucking kill you," you say.
Minho rolls his eyes and continues looking at his phone.
You manage to reach the boba shop in one piece. Minho orders his regular and you choose one of the new fruit teas on the menu. You find an empty round table with only minimal spillage in a corner of the shop and sit there in silence, sipping your drinks. You pull out your phone. Minho is still on his.
Ten minutes later, you crack. "This place fucking sucks."
"You just figured that out?" Minho mutters. He's chewing his straw as he obnoxiously slurps a boba pearl into his mouth. He's doing that on purpose just to annoy you but you rise to the bait anyway.
"Don't do that, it's disgusting." You put your phone down. "There's just nothing to fucking do. Almost makes me want to go back to college."
"You sure as hell weren't saying that right before graduation."
You debate the merits of slurping up a boba pearl just to take it out of your mouth and throw it at him. "Because I wasn't in buttfuck shit suburban Miami then."
Minho rolls his eyes. You do not throw the boba pearl, but only because you don't want sticky hands. Instead you lapse back into silence, the only sounds being Minho's occasional slurp and your ensuing complaint.
At two, your boba cup is empty and so is your will to live. You've seen the same Instagram reels at least twice, scrolled through Tumblr to oblivion, even poked at Sidechat before immediately closing the app after reading the first post you saw. You can't figure out the last three words on the New York Times Spelling Bee and you've already reached Genius status for the day so you have very little motivation to continue. "Let's go to Target," you say.
"Sure."
He makes you drive again and you yell at him the entire way because you're shit at directions so you have no idea how to get to Target despite having lived here for over a decade, and he won't stop looking at his phone the entire car ride there even while giving directions. You take a wrong left turn at some point and end up on the highway for five minutes. You blame him, obviously. Minho threatens to buy Starbucks just to pour on your head.
You don't buy Starbucks at Target because you just had boba. Minho picks up some vitamins, which he needs, and you find a weighted unicorn plushie, which you also need. He claims he doesn't need the matching dinosaur plushie but you dump it in his arms anyway and he carries it for an entire two hours until you get to checkout, which tells you everything you need to know. You snatch it out of his arms to pay for it and he threatens again to buy Starbucks to pour over your head. You tell him threats don't work the second time if he doesn't make good on them the first time. Unless you're Hyunjin, who's scared of everything.
You end up getting Starbucks anyway just before you leave because Chan and Changbin got back in town today and instead of being jet lagged like normal people they want to see everyone again, so you text the group chat and end up with nine orders including yours and Minho's. You refuse to drive this time. Minho mocks you the entire way to Changbin's house and you threaten to throw his plushie out the window.
Chan gives good hugs. So does Changbin. It doesn't stop you from making fun of them for being gym bros who don't miss a day to work out, not even during finals week. It also doesn't stop you from mocking Chan for his age.
"We graduated in the same year," he complains.
"But you got a Masters combined with your Bachelors," Minho says, grinning. "You're one degree ahead and you've been in school for five years instead of four so you're old."
Then Seungmin comes swinging through the door, four other gremlins following close behind, and you get to be called old by the five boys you practically raised ("You're not my dad!" "Vine's been dead for over ten years, shut the FUCK up.").
"What's with the plushies?" Felix eventually asks. He's already eyeing your unicorn. You hug it closer. Even though you love Felix, you will not cede that plushie to anyone.
"Went to Target," Minho says, carrying his dinosaur by the scruff of its neck. "Got plushies. And Starbucks." He leaves out the bit where you spent most of your two hours there snickering at the stupid holiday cards in the gift section and making fun of the Colleen Hoover books randomly displayed around the store, but it's implied.
You all traipse into Changbin's living room because he's the only one with Mario Kart and enough controllers for all of you. It devolves into a big screaming mess within fifteen minutes and someone spills Chan's coffee. No one notices at first but then Minho, mom friend supreme, yells for everyone to shut the fuck up and get towels to clean up the growing mess. Only Chan and Hyunjin respond, Chan because it's his coffee and Hyunjin because Minho is going to make good on his threat to air fry him someday, but Minho bars Chan from cleaning the mess because it's not his fault and it's his coffee so you end up going out to buy him a new one while Hyunjin sops up the spill. Mario Kart continues as usual.
After placing in the bottom half for almost every game in an hour, Jisung switches the game to Smash. After beating Changbin gets boring, you boot him the console and kick Jisung and Minho's collective ass instead. Then the sky is darkening, and you all remember that Changbin's rich kid community has a waterfront view, so Chan shuts off the TV mid-game and you all bicker your way out of the house and to the beach.
The sun is setting and for all that you dislike the beach, the view is nice. Pink and orange rays stream from the horizon and cast a soft glow on the scene that makes everyone look vaguely angelic, even though you all are the furthest from a group of angels you could ever be. You perch on a chunk of limestone and watch Seungmin shove Jisung into the water.
There is a very good reason why Changbin's neighbors hate you all.
The sky gets darker. Minho picks you up with much screaming and dumps you into the water, but on your feet so only your legs get wet. On principle you still have to get revenge so you dump a handful of water over his head and then narrowly escape getting dunked in the ocean by kicking him in the knee before he manages to grab you.
You end up on the rocks again, rough limestone pressing marks into your thighs as you watch the moon slowly pick its way into the sky. Chan and Felix are looking for shells even though this beach is more pebbles than sand, while Seungmin and Jeongin are egging on Hyunjin and Jisung splashing each other in the water. Changbin has spread himself out on the sand and almost looks asleep. Minho sits next to you on the rocks and puts his head on your shoulder. You complain for a bit about his sweaty hair but it's fine.
You're so focused on the sunset that you don't notice that Jisung and Hyunjin are no longer playing fuck-around-and-find-out in the water. You don't even notice that they've come around you from behind. All you do know is that you suddenly hear the click of an iPhone camera and then Jisung whooping behind you.
"The fuck—"
He's holding his phone and it's clear he took a photo of you and by proxy, a photo of Minho. You screech again, on principle, but it's too late. A ping from your phone tells you Jisung has sent the photo to the group chat.
"I'm going to kill you," you promise.
"It's a good photo!" Jisung insists, all the while backing away.
You look at Minho for backup. Instead, you watch him open the message and, after scrutinizing the photo with a nonplussed expression, save it. "What?" he says when he notices your scandalized glare. "It is a good photo."
You look at the picture. With the darkening sky, you and Minho look like shadows on the rock, haloed softly by the last rays of the sun sinking under the horizon. The ocean shimmers gently, waves lapping quietly against the shore. His head is on your shoulder and even though only your backs are in the shot, an air of contentment exudes from the scene. You don't even look sweaty.
Something unknown builds in your stomach, vaguely nostalgic, some kind of sad, but also soft and a little bit sweet. More good than bad but you feel a bit empty, for some reason. "I guess," is all you can answer, and Minho doesn't say anything more. But when you return to Changbin's house, still damp and noisy, you slip into the bathroom and save it to your phone, too.
It is a good photo, after all.

The kids graduate on a Wednesday morning, so Minho picks you up early. You're sitting at your old piano when he lets himself in, staring at some sheet music you used to be able to play five years ago. You can still play it, as you are currently finding out. Badly. With a lot of wrong notes.
You hit a wrong chord. Minho doesn't even flinch. "You're not dressed," he says.
You wave him off vaguely. "Later," you say, and play the right chord this time.
He doesn't say anything, just lies down on the couch and stares at the ceiling while you plink plunk your way through the rest of the piece. He claps. You get changed. He throws you the car keys. You wrestle him out the passenger seat as peacocks watch menacingly from the front lawn, then threaten to poke his eye out if he tries that again.
Chan and Changbin are already there, responsible adults that they are. You and Minho find them in the stands, the kids' parents sitting a couple of rows down. Chan warns you not to make a scene in front of the adults but he's the loudest when each of the boys walks across the stage, so you heckle him semi-quietly from all sides until the ceremony is over.
The four of you head to Minho's while the five new grads get lunch with their parents. Chan insists it isn't a good idea to day drink so you save the bottles of vodka for when the kids arrive, which they do towards the evening. You play Smash until they show up and you and Minho battle for first place fifteen times in a row.
Minho's parents are out of town but the cats are here, winding around all nine pairs of legs when the kids enter the house, newly graduated, caps and gowns abandoned. Food is ordered, shots are poured, and libations are made for each of the newly minted adults in the room with Chan overseeing everything because he doesn't drink. Half of you are underage but that half are all over eighteen, and you say if they're old enough to get drafted they're old enough to drink. Anyway, the youngest is Jeongin and he once sampled fifty different energy drinks in one sitting because Chan was in LA and he had no supervision. He's still alive. A shot or two won't kill him.
There's Smash. There's Mario Party. There's another round of shots and congratulations to the soon-to-be-college-freshmen, then Seungmin finds a bottle of wine and they pour it out for the college grads too. Your head starts feeling fuzzy halfway through the third round of Mario Kart so you lie down on the ground, and Soonie curls up on your chest so you are legally not allowed to move anymore.
The noise settles into a buzz in the back of your head. You yell when Jisung finally places third in Mario Kart and Minho drops a cat onto your head. Eventually, though, the yelling begins to peter out, and when Jeongin starts snoring around two in the morning, Chan calls it quits and begins arranging people around the couches to sleep.
You're not sleepy, though, so long after everyone else is passed out in various positions around the living room, you head into the kitchen for water. You're still at least tipsy so your reflexes don't do so well when footsteps sound behind you and you try to turn around to see who it is.
Minho, drunk as he is, catches you by the shoulder. "Just me," he mumbles. He only looks a little more alert than you.
You nod and finish your water but you don't feel like going back to the living room, where everyone is snoring and it smells like booze. Instead you go to the dining room and lie under the dining table. Minho joins you shortly after.
"What are we doing here?" he asks.
"Being drunk."
He seems to accept that as an answer. You stare at the bottom of his dining table. You've been to Minho's house so many times over the past few years, but somehow you've never seen the table from this angle. It captures your attention for a few minutes. Or maybe an hour. Time isn't real.
"I'm bored," Minho announces.
You look at him. "That's my line."
"And I stole it."
You huff. "Then what the fuck do you want to do?"
No Target. No boba. No beach, and none of that matters since there's no car because you're both shitfaced. It's some stupid hour of the morning, anyway.
Minho raises his hands. Splays out all his fingers against the underside of the table. "Never have I ever."
You stare. "That's so fucking stupid."
"You're so fucking stupid."
"Your mom's so fucking stupid."
"...You take that back."
"Fine." You relent only because Minho's mom is a lovely woman and even drunk, you already feel bad.
Minho grabs your arm and shoves your hand up next to his. "Never have I ever punched someone in the face."
It's not a hard game to play, even drunk. The rules aren't difficult and you and Minho know enough about each other that each time one of you says something, another finger goes down. Both of you have one finger left and your brains are starting to feel fuzzy not just with alcohol but with drowsiness too, so it takes a bit longer for Minho to think of something. Not that it stops you from being a little shit. "Hurry up."
"I can't fucking think," he complains.
"Then say something both of us have done," you snap, waving your last finger around. "Just hurry up."
"Fine." The air seems to change but you're too drunk to really pay attention to it. "Never have I ever been kissed." He folds his last finger.
You don't.
There's a beat of silence. Even without looking you can feel Minho's eyes roving from your still lifted finger down your arm and over to your face, where you are still resolutely staring at the dining table bottom and not back at him. "You've never been kissed," he says, almost incredulous.
You snort. You won the game, but the single finger you're still holding up looks really, really sad. "No need to rub it in."
He grabs your shoulder and that forces you to look at him. You blink. He doesn't say anything and for several seconds or seventy-two hours you don't either. "What the fuck do you want?" you eventually mumble.
"Just shut up," he says, and kisses you.
Minho seems cold but he's actually very warm, a fact that you are reminded of when he presses his lips to yours. Your hand falls limply, the lone finger forgotten as he pulls you to him. His eyes are closed and after a moment yours shut too. You don't know if you can look at him now. It's already too much just to feel.
You pull away for air. Minho holds up your hand and folds all fingers down. "Now you've been kissed," he says. You can't read his expression in the darkness.
"Why?"
Cat eyes seem to glow in the dark. "Because I've liked you since we met, and I think you like me too."
You like me too.
You roll the sentence around your mind, feeling the words bounce off your skull. Minho is mean. Kind. Annoying. Pretty. He knows your boba order and doesn't talk when you don't need to listen. His cats like you and you like them. He complains that you're boring but he hangs out with you all the time and he has never made you feel less than what you are, even when you play the piano shittily in front of him. You think of the photo Jisung took of you two last week and how you've made it your phone's home screen. You think of perfunctory complaints, a sunset, and his head on your shoulder with a weird feeling in your stomach.
You hold his hand. "I guess you're right."
He smiles. You can see it in the dark. And it's not the patented Cheshire Cat grin of evil and mischief; not really, at least. It's softer and sweeter and you recognize it as one of the sides of Minho that he rarely shares. Like when a cat allows you to rub its belly and purrs instead of scratching.
You end up in his room, still on the floor because the bed is too annoying to get to. He's lying on his back, dinosaur plushie under his head, and you're draped over his stomach. You can feel him breathing slowly, steadily, softly.
"Do you ever wonder what it would be like if we never met?"
"...Could you just let me fucking sleep?"
"Be so for fucking real."
You can hear him rolling his eyes, but you can also hear him collecting his thoughts. "Well," he says, and you think he might be smiling, "Miami would be a lot more boring without you."
. . .
[9:14am] from: minnow before you try to overthink things yes I meant what I said last night tell chan if he wakes me up again I'll egg his car when he least expects it
. . .
Miami is stupid. There are peacocks and alligators and iguanas that fall out of trees in the winter. It's sunny all the fucking time and if it isn't it's pouring rain and in both cases there are mosquitoes out for your blood. Every time you walk outside it feels like you're melting into soup and the invasive ducks will give chase the moment you show weakness or fear. Cockroaches roam your home. So do weird millipedes and tiny lizards and idiot moths. Everything is hot and humid and stupid, and it's boring.
"I'm bored."
Minho rolls his eyes. "You are incredibly fucking annoying."
You pinch him. "Yeah, because I'm fucking bored."
"We could kiss."
Contemplative silence on your end.
"...Solid plan."
You hate this fucking place. It's boring and there's nothing to do but go to the beach or become one with the pavement. But there's Minho, and you'll never admit it if anyone asks, but you think that might be enough.
. . .

Three brothers in a celebrity real estate family were charged with sex trafficking conspiracy in a case involving "dozens of victims" from Miami Beach to New York, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Twins Oren and Alon Alexander and their elder brother Tal were charged with working together to "repeatedly and violently drug, sexually assault, and rape dozens of victims," according to a federal indictment filed in New York.
They were arrested Wednesday in Miami. The charges come in the wake of a string of lawsuits accusing the brothers of rape and sexual assault.
'Drugged' victims
Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, said all three brothers had used "force, threats of force, fraud, and coercion" in sexually assaulting women for more than a decade.
"This conduct, as alleged, is heinous," Williams told reporters.
Some of the victims who were drugged found themselves unable to speak or to move, leaving them unable to escape, and were left with partial memories of their assaults, Williams said.
Oren and Alon Alexander were also facing separate sexual battery charges in Miami Beach, according to arrest warrants made public Wednesday afternoon.
"Oren Alexander is innocent," his lawyer, Susan Necheles, told USA TODAY. "The evidence will show that neither he nor his brothers ever committed a crime."
Lawyers for Tal and Alon Alexander could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.
Civil lawsuits against the Alexander brothers
The Alexander brothers – telegenic twins Oren and Alon, and their elder brother Tal – have been the subject of several lawsuits by women alleging they were raped and possibly drugged.
Until news broke of the sexual assault allegations, Oren and Alon Alexander were fixtures of the jet set, attending glitzy parties in Miami, New York and partying in the Mediterranean.
Oren and Tal Alexander run the Alexander Team, which boasts of brokering sales worth more than $7 billion in luxury markets including New York, South Florida, and Aspen, Colorado.
“We are glad to hear that there will finally be some measure of accountability for the Alexander brothers and justice for their many victims," the law firm Wigdor LLP, which represents several women who've accused the Alexanders of rape, said in a statement. "We applaud all the survivors who have had the strength and courage to speak up about their unimaginable experiences after years of pain and suffering.”
Witnesses spoke of 'gang rapes'
In a memo asking a federal judge to deny bail, prosecutors wrote that witnesses and victims told investigators the Alexanders had been raping women since they were in high school.
"Evidence from the investigation, including multiple victim and witness accounts, shows that the Alexander Brothers began engaging in acts of sexual violence, including gang rapes, while still in high school in Miami, Florida," the memo says.
"Each of the victims that the Government has interviewed from this period reported hearing that individuals involved −including Tal Alexander − talked about the assaults at school, boasting about 'running train' on their victims and saying that they wanted to 'do it again.'"
New York Magazine cited witnesses in an August article who said the brothers often spoke of "running a train," slang for the act of gang rape, when they were in school.
In their senior year at Michael M. Krop Senior High School in North Miami, Oren and Alon Alexander's yearbook included a page with the question, “What was your most memorable moment at Krop?”
According to New York Magazine, Oren Alexander replied: “Riding my first ‘choo-choo’ train.”
The twins graduated in 2005.
Eleven years later, as Tal, Oren and Alon Alexander planned a 2016 trip to Tulum, Mexico, with male friends, women flown in for entertainment, and drugs including GHB − considered a "date rape" drug under federal law − the term appeared again in a group chat.
"I don’t want anyone being upset if they don’t run a 10 man train," an unidentified member of the group wrote.
Miami charges
In affidavits, Miami Beach Police detectives accused Alon Alexander in the October 2021 group sexual assault of a woman lured to a luxury apartment on Miami Beach's beachfron Collins Avenue under the pretext of attending a barbeque. Oren Alexander also joined that assault, the victim told Miami Beach Police Det. David Alvarez. An Alexander cousin, Ohad Fisherman, is at large, Dade County prosecutors said.
More than 30 women have alleged they were raped by Oren Alexander, Alon Alexander, or both brothers, according to a lawsuit filed by model Angelica Parker.
Parker charged that she was raped by Alon and Tal Alexander in 2012 while their brother Oren watched. They denied the allegations.
No bail, prosecutors urge
In a letter to U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni, prosecutors asked that the three brothers be held without bail., citing the nature of the crimes they're accused of, their wealth and close connections to Israel, where extradition to the U.S. can be a "drawn-out" process.
"After relying on their substantial wealth and connections to carry out and conceal their crimes for years, all three defendants now face charges carrying potential sentences in prison of fifteen years to life," assistant U.S. attorneys Kaiya Arroyo and Elizabeth A. Espinosa wrote.
The three brothers "pose an ongoing and significant danger to the community and present a serious risk of flight," the prosecutors said.

Diane Levine with John Lennon in the background while in Miami, Florida, February of 1964. Photographed by Paul McCartney🌻🌻🌻
Diane Levine was born in June of 1946 in Miami, Florida. Diane was attending Miami Beach High School as a senior at the time when Paul McCartney was in Miami in February of 1964. Diane and her friends, Barbara Turchin and Carol Olesky, were at the beach and. they heard sirens and saw The Beatles running around posing for the press. Paul invited Diane to see the Beatles at The Ed Sullivan Show at the Deauville Hotel. She left during an after party in the hotel room and gave the guard her contact information (including her father's office). The next day while visiting her father's office after school, he informed her that Paul called him. They doubled dated with Ringo and Barbara to a drive-in movie. By 1984, Diane married, had three children, and moved to Hawail🎍🎍🎍
"It's not like l was a spectacular beauty. I was really quite shy. He had sand and water on his hand. He sort of wiped his hand on his bathing suit and shook my hand. Then he said, 'Come with me.' We ran toward a house where the entourage was. He sat me down and just started to joke immediately. I felt so at home with Paul. We had this Gemini thing in common, I suppose. We really clicked. It was very nice. After we talked for about 45 minutes, he was whisked away. He yelled out form the car window, 'come to the concert.' So l went to the Deauville Hotel, but I didn't have a ticket. A man who had been taking our pictures on the beach came running out. He said, 'Wait, I'll get you into the show. Paul said he wants to see you! When the show was over, I was taken up to the room. The Beatles were just as excited about the show as everyone else. After they left, the hotel guard told me I had to leave. I gave the guard a note thanking the Beatles and wishing them luck. I said I was sorry I didn't get a chance to say goodbye. I left my father's number and my home number. Then next day, when I dropped by my father's office after school, he said, 'Who is this Paul McCartney calling you?'" -Diane🌹🌹🌹

[ meghann fahy, cis-female, she/her ] - was that KENNEDY O’NEILL i saw by the lighthouse today? i heard that the THIRTY-ONE year old who has been in nightrest for HER WHOLE LIFE and works as an EMPLOYEE OF THE TREASURE TROVE & PHOTOGRAPHER has a reputation of being HOPEFUL, but also MULISH. they reside in ASHMORE & people in town usually associate them with THE GENTLE, RHYTHMIC THUD OF A CAMERA AS IT HANGS FROM YOUR NECK, SITTING AT THE EDGE OF THE DOCK BUT NEVER TOUCHING THE WATER, & HAND-ME-DOWN SWEATERS LOSING THEIR DISTINCT SMELL. let’s hope the killer doesn’t go after them next.
tw: abandonment, parent death, grief
Kennedy's parents, Rory and Andrea were in their senior year of high school when they'd found out they were expecting. Unexpectedly expecting. There were nerves of course and plenty of worries, but Rory was so excited to be a father. Andrea felt differently. She'd tried after the birth, but soon enough all her friends were going off to college, living their lives, and then there she was. Stuck. See, Andrea had dreams of leaving Nightrest, moving out to maybe somewhere warm like Miami or even Los Angeles, becoming more than just another generation of her family that stayed. The resentment in her grew until finally in October she left, leaving behind the title of 'mother' that she never wanted.
Kennedy's father did as good a job as he could to fill in whatever gaps had been left. As a single father, he'd had to work extra hard to provide and always put that extra bit more of time and attention to let Kennedy know she was loved. They were a pair.
Nearly mirroring her parents, she had been a senior (this time in college) when she'd received news that would change her world. Her father, a commercial fisherman, hadn't made it back on their last outing. They'd said that the storm came up on them faster than they'd thought. Something about the waves being so tall. Nine years and his body was never recovered. Rory O'Neill: presumed dead.
Her father's death shattered Kennedy. She opted not to return to her classes, leaving college just shy of earning her degree in marketing. She fully returned to their home in Ashmore, to this day still struggling to make changes to the master bedroom. She returned back to the job she held in high school. Kennedy sought comfort in what parts of the past she could still hold onto.
Though it has been years since, Kennedy still has not gotten into the water. The closest she'd gotten has been letting the waves run up to her ankles on the beach or when she visits her father's motorboat at the old port. Plenty of people find it odd of her, considering the area they live. Her life was practically built around the water. She just felt more trusting of dry land nowadays.
Despite the lingering sadness, Kennedy truly tries to live each day better than the one before it. So even if there are tears in her eyes, she'll still have a soft smile on. Over the years she's found that it helps to surround herself with other people. Admittedly, sometimes that can lead to her being a little dependent and clingy. After a particularly toxic relationship, Kennedy realizes its something that she needs to work on.
Kennedy has always been a creative kid, a trait she had apparently gotten from her mother. She'd always looked forward to vacations or special occasions when she'd get a disposable camera of her own. There were still several shoeboxes filled with memories. And as she got older, her hobby continued and matured until just the last few years when she started making a side hustle of it. She's by no means getting her work in magazines, but she does a fair bit of the engagement, graduation, baby announcements, and of course the family photos (usually when they're all wearing some form of white button-ups). She'll usually have her camera on her, whether around her neck or in her cluttered monster of a bag— some days she can really give Mary Poppins a run for her money with the amount of stuff she's got crammed in there.
A recent change came on her last birthday, when her grandfather gifted her a cat. Clearly not keen to the rule that animals aren't gifts, he had insisted that Kennedy had needed a companion. "Can't keep living in that house all alone, Peanut." Kennedy still debates on whether he had forgotten that her father had been allergic or whether that had been a purposeful choice. Either way, a black cat named Fitz entered her life and now takes residence mostly in the front window where the sun shines brightest. They both enjoy rainy nights on the couch with trashy television on the screen with wine and charcuterie. Sometimes (most times) he'll earn himself a nibble of cheddar.
Around town, if she's not at her job, Kennedy can usually be found editing photos while sipping on cold brew at the Daily Dose, treating herself to a cocktail and specialty plate at Spirits, or strolling one of the many beaches. Usually, it's Echo but on occasion she'll go to Shipwreck, finding some odd sort of comfort there.

More Diane Levine. These write ups evidently appeared in the 20th anniversary of the Ed Sullivan Rolling Stone issue.
Diane’s n the black bathing suit
Miami mustered a welcoming committee for the Beatles that included four bathing beauties, a chimpanzee and 7000 shrieking teenager girls, who in their crush to get just a little closer broke 23 windows and a plate glass door in the airline terminal. Few fans were rewarded with more than a distant glimpse, but three seniors from Miami Beach High, who were working as models at a car show, got lucky. A photographer asked best friends Barbara Turchin, Carol Olesky and Diane Levine if they would like to pose with the Beatles at the beach. They were skeptical but turned up for the pictures session and an hour and a half later, the Beatles did too. Shots of Ringo with his arms around Barbara and Carol appeared in Modern Screen and on the cover of Inside Movie magazine. The girls were invited to The Ed Sullivan Show in a Miami Beach hotel, but after that Carol kept her distance. "My mother wouldn't let me go out with them," she explains, "and I had a boyfriend." Barbara became the object of Ringo's singular, if transient, attention, while Paul was smitten by Diane. The four of them double-dated at a drive in movie theater. Barbara invited Ringo home to dinner. He arrived concealed in a Hertz moving van and the family was amused when her grandmother kept calling him Hugo and tugging at his hair to see if it was a wig. Ringo pounded out boogie-woogie on the piano to entertain Barbara's younger brothers. "Music just poured out of them all the time," says Barbara of the group. "They'd compose a song right on the spot." Ringo's parting gift to her was a ring with a gold "R" in a black onyx stone, which, for a time, she wore on a chain around her neck. Barbara, now a Miami designer of silk quilts about to enter her third marriage, and Carol, an Annapolis, Maryland housewife, have maintained both their friendship and a wise perspective on their brush with fame 20 years ago. "It was an exciting time in my life," says Barbara, "but I'm not waiting for the Beatles to come back or anything."
Paul talks about calling her father and the drive-in movie in Eyes of the Storm
These and many more write-ups about the Sullivan appearances here
Diane Levine, the girl who caught Paul’s eye.
Well, I’ve always kept it a secret. But for the 20th anniversary, it’s okay. I hope Paul doesn’t mind. It started at a private beach. Three of my friends and I were relaxing after taking the college boards. I was seventeen. We were Seniors at Miami Beach High School. We heard sirens. We thought it was an ambulance or something. There they were. They popped out of a car. They were white—blue-white, skinny. They looked white because everyone in Miami Beach is tanned. We couldn’t believe our eyes for a minute. I backed up. I was totally blown away. A bunch of people were converging on them—press photographers. The Beatles were in the water taking pictures. Some girls were chasing Paul. I was standing by myself. He was coming in my direction. At that point I was really thrilled. I held out my hand. I said, “I don’t want an autograph. I don’t want to rape you. I just want to shake your hand and welcome you to the United States.” It’s not like I was a spectacular beauty. I was really quite shy. He had sand and water on his hand. He sort of wiped his hand on his bathing suit and shook my hand. Then he said, “Come with me.” We ran toward a house where the entourage was. He sat me down and just started to joke immediately. I felt so at home with Paul. We had this Gemini thing in common, I suppose. We really clicked. It was very nice. After we talked for about 45 minutes, he was whisked away. He yelled out form thecar window, “come to the concert.” so I went to the Deauville Hotel, but I didn’t have a ticket. A man who had been taking our pictures on the beach came running out. He said, “Wait, I’ll get you into the show. Paul said he wants to see you.” When the show was over, I was taken up to the room. The Beatles were just as excited about the show as everyone else. After they left, the hotel guard told me I had to leave. I gave the guard a note thanking the Beatles and wishing them luck. I said I was sorry I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. I left my father’s number and my home number. Then next day, when I dropped by my father’s office after school, he said, “Who is this Paul McCartney calling you?”
