y'all know those types of shows like "Strictly Come Dancing" and "Dancing with the Stars"? there was also a singing version of it called "Just the Two of Us" that aired in the UK a long, long time ago.

well, these types of shows are still very popular in Croatia (and this part of Europe apparently) and our versions still airs 15 years later. we have "Ples sa zvijezdama" (dancing with the stars, literally) and "Zvijezde pjevaju" (literal translation is 'the stars are singing').

yesterday, an openly gay man won the 11th season of Zvijezde pjevaju and I just think that's neat-o! he won by both the audience and jury votes. what's even better is that his professional partner is an IRL friend of his so they share their victory with somebody they love.

I’m running to save my haunted soul: An Ode to the Amazing Songs We Lost in the Eurovision National Final Season 2022

National final season always means that we lose some fantastic songs that won’t ever get to grace to the big ESC stage, but I can memorialize all the other tracks I love here. This list contains the songs that got away, as well as some of the guilty pleasures, and songs I simply enjoy listening to, from the NF season of 2022.

Note that this is my personal taste, so I might be missing something you jive with. Songs are arranged by flow, not in a ranking. Some videos I will have to replace with another upload at some point (FiK namely). I went with studio recordings to be consistent (barring the bonus track).

It's the two Mias who stand out for me in this selection! Their songs are quite different, the dramatic Forgive Me (Oprosti) and the quieter Guilty Pleasure, but both grabbed me from first listen and made me pay attention!

Guilty Pleasure is very singer-songwriter - I'm not the only one to make this comparison but it reminded me of early Taylor Swift songs, especially in the chorus, the melody sounded like something she'd write, and I mean that as a compliment! The lyrics tell a story a lot messier than Mia's sweet voice might imply, but I find it really compelling. I like the story arc here - exploring the emotions in the relationships, the fantasy of leaving her current partner and running off with the person the song's about, before the reality of her situation kicks in and she concludes how it just can't be.

Forgive Me (Oprosti) follows all the beats of a standard ballad of the type we've heard many times at Eurovision before, but I really like it! It's got the dramatic, soaring chorus, the sweeping strings, the long note on the climax - and it manages to move me, which is all I look for in a song like this. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it's still a good wheel!

I think either of these songs would be a great choice for Croatia - I could see both doing well in May, but neither is without risks. Forgive Me is probably the 'safer' option, but it depends how many other ballads we get and whether it stands out against them or not, whereas Guilty Pleasure could stand out for it's quieter tone and complex emotions, or it could get lost between louder, more musically exciting songs. I think the overall selection of songs is pretty good, so I don't think it would be a bad for Croatia if they picked a song a little further down my ranking, but those are definitely the two I'd love to see at Eurovision.

National selection review: Dora

Almost done with the Super Saturday selections! (Thinking of skipping Slovenia and San Marino, though. The former has only one interesting song in the final, and the latter doesn’t have all the songs out yet).

Overall impression: Dora was more impressive last year, with gems like Tick-Tock, Rijeka and Colours. This year doesn’t seem to quite match that level. Guess I’m missing the dance bops and ethnic songs. But I like that there are multiple Croatian songs, and the ballads seem especially good. Perhaps Croatia could be the one to provide us with the obligatory Balkan ballad of the year?

Personal favourites: 

Mia Negovetić - Forgive Me (Oprosti)

This has a powerful and cinematic feel. A wonderful, Eurovision-ready ballad. Maybe not the most unique entry, but it still works. The vocals are great, I really hope she can pull the same live!

Tina Vukov – Hideout

This has a bit of a dark feel to it. I like that! She’s a great singer with a pleasant voice. This also has the vibe of a common Eurovision ballad, but hey, if it works it works. I might prefer this a little over the previous one, but I’m not sure. This selection doesn’t seem to have one clear winner.

Mia Dimšić - Guilty Pleasure

This gives me Taylor Swift vibes! A more chill and less dramatic tune. This is a relaxing listen without being boring or monotonous. It could actually be an unique entry in this year’s contest.

Prediction: As I said, there doesn’t seem to be one clear winner here. The top two in the odds are currently Mia Negovetić and Marko Bošnjak with a very small margin. As Mia N. isn’t in the best place in the running order, this may go for Marko.

Young Croatian singer Mia Negovetić has released her new self-penned song called "Mijenjam se" (I am changing), in which she's trying to "deconstruct the concept of sexual objectivization of women in showbusiness" and it's being neg bombed by bad folks so if you could all please go and give her a like and maybe even a positive comment, that would be amazing! A song against discrimination is being attacked by people who discriminate, it's the oldest story in the book but let's please try and change that at least a little.

Firstly, I find ranking snippets harder than full songs, a song that’s catchy for one minute could be really repetitive in the full version while something that seems flat in the snippet could build up to a great climax. However, I found a lot of these snippets promising.

My top three are my standouts. I honestly wasn’t too fussed by Lighthouse in 2016 (though I didn’t follow the contest as closely then), but I really like the first minute of Rijeka! It sounds like a great balkan ballad, one set to make the most of the new backing vocal rule, and I love the way it builds in just this snippet. I hope it’s got a really powerful climax to make it really shine.

I really like the folky orchestral sound of Zaljubljen, and there’s a lot of power there, which makes it stand out. The one issue I have with it is that the voices seem almost a little washed out on the studio cut, I want them to be more powerful, so I really hope this one is good live, it could create a real wave of sound. I also really like that it’s in 3/4 time, it’s got a great lilt to it.

Tick-Tock grabbed my attention the moment the chorus kicked it, it’s got a really energy and drive to it, and it’s really tight, contrasting nicely with the longer notes that come before and after it. I especially like the melody in the smoother section near the end of the snippet.

I’m rooting for one of my top three to win tomorrow, as long as the rest of them lives up to these snippets. I think all three could really stand out for Croatia at Eurovision, and could see them through to the final.
