ânot okayâ thoughts??????
SPOILER FILLEDÂ omg please do not proceed unless you have watched this brilliant film thanks x
mia isaac - the STANDOUT for me for the entire runtime
like yaâll iâm a dylan girl thru and thru, and gorgeous zoey is the main star of this movie
but mia
yaâll donât sleep on mia isaac
i know the proper reviews have agreed with me, she is absolutely brilliant and powerful and and empowering, every scene was so strong and she deserves all the praise, all the awards, hands down
her characterâs story where it related to real life events.. her trauma was so heartbreaking, and the ptsd scene on the stage really truly got to me and i honestly started tearing up. that was a full panic attack... iâve lived through many, and it was captured so upsettingly well. mia conveys emotion so so well and i hope you love her as much as i did.Â
AND DUDE ----- THE LAST SCENE OF THE MOVIE WITH MIA WAS AHHHHHHHHHHHH MY FAVE PART OF THE WHOLE THIINNG
now... zoey, wow, her characterisation was SPOT ON
she just gulped up that fame, actual fame whoreÂ
like i hated her but i loved her and but at the same time i was holding my breath for her white lie to be unfoldedÂ
and PHEW it was nuts
âshit gon be nutsâ - dylan oâbrien, 2022, twitter.
zoey is a phenomenal actress, she can play all sorts of dimensions, but danni was just something else, in a very good wayÂ
she was a crafty lil bitch and i give her kudos, to an extent, and then yes she deserved to be #cancelled over and over again, never coming back from that oneÂ
i was shaking my head at her the whole time like..... honey youâre making it so obvi that you are not traumatised. you just want those likes, you just want that @WEEDBOIIICOLIN so bad.
also SHOUT OUT to the nightmares she was having, and her own personal haunting trauma with the green coat guy. i loved that continuity and how it built her guilt over and over again.
especially with the reveal.. i saw it coming at the last second, but was still surprised when you saw who it really was that was haunting her.
her hampster tho being the soul reason for her lie, giving her the idea, that was iconic. you go hamster. they also had similar hair???Â
her style was wild, very tik tok, very âon trendâ thank you quinn for crafting this crazy girlÂ
zoey you need to be given like 150 gold stars right now, girl.Â
now................
dylan.
fuck me.
from the GET GO, from his first words, i was like............. here we go.
âlick the titâ yeah bro, straight off the bat
the little pet name âhoneyâ also got to me
ah DUDE THE WARDROBE DEPARTMENT FOR COLIN WAS HILARIOUS, his last outfit that you see him in, when he walks out of the elevator, i loved it so much i took a photo because i giggled
the was dylan put on that shit talker voice was also so well done, the vernacular he sattired was perfect
everything he said was legit comic reliefÂ
he made it funny with her stupid he was, honestlyÂ
and you could 100% tell that he was doing it to make fun
he better have enjoyed this role because i bloody well did
ANYWAY
DYLAN OâBRIENâS FUCKING MOANING WILL LIVE IN MY HEAD RENT FREE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND I NEED IT ON ACTUAL FUCKIGN REPLAY RIGHT NOW THIS IS NOT A DRILL
his ****** game is also STRONGÂ
seriously, THAT scene, youâll know it, in the bathroom
it doesnât last long but it was literally the set up for every dylan smut scene in fan fic okayÂ
HIS WORDING WOOWWOWOWOWEVNBKJGE]
I AM STILL DEEEAASDDDDDDDD
ask @ slutobrien because i was messaging her the whole time and i was going craazzyyyyy
my fave is âyoure so tightâÂ
fuck thats dylan fan fic
in a good way.. a very, very, good wayÂ
he also says that heâll protect her in a very sensual way and yes i believed it i still do i also need it RIGHT NOW.
but yes okay, thank you quinn once again for choosing this god of a man to portray this idiot of a manÂ
other things i super loved: - the running jokes with kendall jenner loooool - quinnâs cameo!!!!!!!!!!! i squealed, like a lil piggy - the cinematography?!!?!!??! so good - the support group hanging out together was too cute for words - special shout out to NADIA for her portrayal of harper!!!!! the villain (?) that we really needed ((((( but like was danni really the villain the whole time and was harper the hero??? hmmmm????)))))) - still love mia isaac - MY 2ND FAVE PART THOOO ,....... OMGG... was when colin said some weird shit and harper was like âyouâre from maineâ and dylan puts his real voice on for a short moment since colin gets called out for his fakeness HAHAHA too good
Overall, NOT OKAY was a very good, eye-opening, funny film. It really makes you look at the craziness and toxicity that social media carries. It shows you how it can change people, literally, and the lengths they will go to to get those extra followers or those extra likes. Social media can be so dangerous. Watching Miaâs character get absolutely shit over for having a ptsd panic attack, saying she was being a fake victim.. thatâs real, unfortunately. It happens so often. Dylan and Zoey have only recently done interviews where they explain that the truth is sometimes never believed, that the lies circulating gets the better of them and puts out negative untrue vibes.Â
This movie HAD to be made. And I am so glad that Quinn did it in such a captivating way.Â
But I think that there is also another important point made from this movie......
What I have learnt is that it is indeed.. okay... to not be okay. Donât hide if youâre in pain, because itâs very most likely that the person next to you is also not okay.Â
OKAY THATâS MY REVIEW BYE

top 5 favorite usages of music in film or tv, can be needledrops or diegetic sourcing or whatever! đ€Ș
spider-man into the spider-verse: "what's up danger" in the leap of faith scene. seeing that in theatres for the first time was the first time in a LONG time i actually Felt Something because of a needledrop mixed with how phenomenal the editing is throughout the scene (spider-verse's editing is generally phenomenal but that scene specifically still makes me go crazy)
lord of the rings return of the king: "edge of night" sung by pippin during the battle of osgiliath. this is probably. my favourite use of diegetic music in any film. like of all time. seeing this scene for the first time as a child actually altered my brain chemistry. any lotr fan knows exactly what i mean when i say i still hold my breath every single time i rewatch it. the sound design is INSANE. the reverb on billy boyd's voice actually makes me scream. the editing is NUTS and by nuts i mean it's so clean and EFFECTIVE and timed ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY. there is so much conveyed without any exposition. the lyrics (implied by pippin to not have anything to do with war, violence or death) are so insanely eerie as you watch faramir ride to what looks like a needless death paired with the animalistic way denethor eats. i could literally write a 10 page paper on this scene ALONE. it's horrifying. it's beautiful. it's haunting. it's perfect.
inside llewyn davis: "fare thee well" scene. i very rarely feel anything when an entire song in a movie (yes even if the movie's a biopic about a musician!) is just performed diegetically without intercutting of anything else but oscar isaac's voice and how intimate the performance feels is so simple and beautiful i think i actually cried the first time i saw it. it really felt like you were in the audience watching him on that little stage. the first time i saw chuck singing it in spn 11x20, i immediately thought of THIS scene and all i wanted to do was rewatch the film just to experience the magic of oscar's performance again.
shrek 2: "funkytown" in the far far away scene. you probably thought i was going to mention all star at some point! syke! and yes, all star IS one of the most iconic needledrops of all time but i wanted to change this up a little because though i grew up in a household that celebrated a huge array of genres, particularly disco and funk thanks to my parents, i am physically incapable of hearing funkytown and not perfectly visualizing this entire scene despite my ability to enjoy music without fully relying on film and tv to discover it đ„Č
supernatural: "renegade" in nightshifter. im sorry but i am going to have to be that bitch because this scene! is so hot!!!!! the buildup is SO SATISFYING because the writing in this ep is just THAT good - you dont know exactly what's going to happen when the fbi agents find the boys and the next time you see them, they're knocked out and their uniforms are missing and that alone would have been cool enough if you DIDNT ALSO KNOW THE AGENTS IN THE BACKGROUND SLINKING AROUND THE CORNER TO 'CHECK IF THE COAST IS CLEAR' ARE SAM AND DEAN MAKING THEIR GETAWAY. like if youre seeing nightshifter for the first time you CANT catch it but then something clicks when the music starts up and you see them making their way up the parking lot stairs and it's just SO GOOD. there's just no dialogue until dean lets out a breath and goes "we are so screwed" and then BAM, in comes in the punchy first verse. sexy. perfect. literally who is doing it like the kripke era needledrops
im cheating! but!! HONOURABLE MENTIONS bc i thought of more in the car: "never too late" in spn 13x5 (ep ending), "hoist the colours" potc: at world's end (opening), "when i kissed the teacher" in mamma mia: here we go again (graduation scene), "free bird" in kingsman (church massacre), "rocketman" in rocketman (pool scene), "epiphany" in sweeney todd, "immigrant song" in thor ragnarok (final battle), "you don't own me" in first wives club (both the ending and the scene when diane keaton gets embarrassed and like screams lolol), and lastly a tie between "our prayer" and "high on a rocky ledge" in ofmd bc i cant stop thinking about both those needledrops, which are very small moments but are still sticking with me !
put âtop 5â anything in my ask and i will answer ok go
#rennie i got so excited thinking about my answers#u know me VERY WELL for asking this >:)#stuck with mostly music and not ost bc i think i would have been here thinking about any type of fav uses of music for like. days#im definitely forgetting a lot of examples i love but these are the ones i thought of first !#also#if i were an annoying Film Bro (which i have had the un-pleasure of meeting many times) i wouldve said reservoir dogs or pulp fiction :)#because film bros are boring :)#and they all say the same thing :)#so ur welcome for not mentioning either <3#deansbarmitzvahtraxx#ask game

Happy 20th Anniversary to Golden Sun! This game was a very, very huge part of my childhood, and even now, it still holds a special place in my heart  Still dreaming of a remake of the first two games from Camelot one day!!
Notes under cut:
When I started brainstorming this, I knew I wanted to set it in Venus Lighthouse, the final dungeon for the first game and one of my favourite locations in Weyard. The lighthouse aerie was the obvious pick since the final battle happens there, but I... wasnât sure if I wanted to draw the Fusion Dragon HAHAHAHA. Besides, itâd be fun to have multiple enemies for the team to face.
So I selected one of the puzzle rooms, with the iconic âshove the pillar down so the sparky spark from the statue can go through and open the doorâ thing. I had to take a lot of creative liberties, though; thereâs only so much you can extract from the pixels of a GBA game TTwTTÂ
I chose the Grand Golem and the Willowisps to use as enemies. Originally Iâd wanted to use the Wild Gryphon, but the size of it with outstretched wings would take up too much room, taking focus away from Procne (which was the summon I knew I wanted to include). So I picked the Grand Golem.... and nearly regretted it because holy hell the thing is BRIGHT FUCHSIA....... 8âČD I turned down the saturation a few notches in the end.
The djinn and Procne! Iâve always really, really loved the concept of djinn, with the set, standby, and summon options. Set will allow your folks to receive the stat boosts of their djinn, but standby allows you to prepare them for summoning... And not to mention, the class changes from those that give you different psynergy! I definitely wanted to portray that in my art. The third Jupiter djinn Ivan is calling to summon Procne ended up kind of hidden behind in the wind though SOBS.Â
Onto the main cast! I decided from the beginning that I didnât want to give them their official art weapons because A) Garet and Isaacâs swords are sheathed anyway and B) Itâd be cooler if I could give them actual in-game weapons! However, there was the problem of âall you got for references are the low-rest pixel iconsâ...
With Isaac, of course the choice is the Gaia Blade. This sword has a noticeably unique shape to the blade, but otherwise looks ordinary in the icon. I drew reference from the Dark Dawn model, as well as the Titan Blade unleash, for slight designs and the gold colour =DÂ
For Ivan, I probably could have gone with a staff, but I wanted to give him a light blade because swords are just cool. So heâs using the Kikuichimonji, referenced both from the icon and the Dark Dawn model (which has a blue-ish blade).
With two of the best swords taken, the question was Garet. But I think I always liked the idea of him using a cursed weapon, since heâd very much be the kind to go âOH LOOK A COOL LOOKING WEAPONâ and pick it up and then realise itâs glued to him forever HAHAHA. So I gave him the Demon Axe. Just imagine he has the clericâs ring under his glove!Â
Mia was given the Crystal Rod, which is admittedly not really a weapon Iâd have given her for endgame. But the other weapons for consideration, Blessed Mace and Righteous Mace, I couldnât get references for :â( also i just really like staves/rods because they pretty In the end I picked the rod because it also appears in Dark Dawn.
Thatâs all for the ramblings of an overly obsessed artist/gamer. Thank you for reading!

I create headcanons, particularly aro/ace-spec ones, although Iâll do anything that isnât MAPs.
Asks are welcome! If you want to make a request, send the character, what I should put their identity as, and a list of flags. If you send bi-oriented aroace, I will try to find a flag for that specific identity, but will also do the bi flag and oriented aroace flag in case that was what you meant. I wonât do the aroace flag or the asexual flag or the aromatic flag unless you say, bi, oriented aroace, aromantic, asexual, and aroace, because that gets to be kind of a lot to keep track of if I donât have a list. If itâs a character Iâve done before it will be the same image unless you request otherwise. You can send specific images in to be made into icons. If itâs from a fandom I havenât posted before, please say, âthis character from thisâ so i donât accidentally do a character from something else. characters Iâve done:

Itâs Time for Kyrstenâs Opinion: Watch Us Rise Edition
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/adcab62312405734782203dcedd5506c/3858da78bc79ce11-6c/s250x250_c1/03bdd1e34951de995e89b7c9e8bb22c8ec1ea04a.jpg)
My tenth book of the year was Watch Us Rise by RenĂ©e Watson and Ellen Hagan. Watch Us Rise is told as a narrative, but includes poems and drawings of the students. The book follows a group of friends, Nadine, Isaac, Chelsea and Jasmine - with most of the focus on Jasmine. They are juniors at their revolutionary New York high school, but soon realize that the curriculum in the theater and poetry program focus on the âclassicsâ and type casting the students. Jasmine and Chelsea decide to quit their programs and start one on their own - Write Like a Girl, a collection of essays, poems and actions posted online to inspire others to be involved. Their work becomes viral and before they really are able to get their feet off the ground, their school shuts down the club. However, Chelsea and Jasmine refuse to be silenced.Â
Below the cut is a spoiler - free review of Watch Us Rise. If you have read this book, please feel free to shoot over a message with your thoughts on your experience reading it as well as leave a comment with book recs for people who may have enjoyed it!Â
Before the actual review I wanted to give a content warning for the following potential triggers: sexual harassment, misogyny, racism, death of a parent, body shaming and victim blaming. If any of these are an issue for you, but you still want to read Watch Us Rise, just know that they are throughout the book and read with caution :DÂ
The major issue I had with Watch Us Rise was how Jasmine and Chelsea saw and treated other women. Jasmine and Chelsea wanted to let the girls at their school know that they didnât have to look or act a certain way; however, they on a few occasions disrespected women who opted to have plastic surgery. At one point Chelsea and her sister, Mia are watching a reality TV show and when Jasmine says that the show the sisters are watching is garbage, Chelse says that âItâs so I can make sure we rage against the system so that no one ever has to see a Botoxed face ever againâ (64). At another moment during Thanksgiving, Jasmineâs mother is cooking dinner and Jasmine asks her mother if she ever feels like her father makes her cook or expects her mother to cook. Jasmineâs mother informs her daughter, âYour dad and I donât make each other do anything. I like to cook, so I cook. If I didnât, I wouldnâtâ (222). While our main characters want to let the other girls that they speak to know that they donât have to adhere to traditional roles that women have had in history, they completely discredit the value of women who enjoy these traditional roles. I cook because I want to, not because I have a man behind me telling me I have to, I wear makeup because I enjoy putting it on, not because I have a boyfriend somewhere who expects me to wear it. Within this issue is another problem I have with our antagonist. . . Mostly because the antagonist is a girl at school with Jasmine and Chelsea. I feel like when it comes to books about feminism, especially YA and middle grade books, a great disservice is being done when we have antagonists who are also women who are also victims to the same inequalities as other female characters, and the character Meg is no exception. Meg does eventually learn her lesson, but makes really insensitive comments about Jasmineâs weight as well as dress up in culturally appropriating Halloween costumes just to irritate our protagonists. Isnât a main idea of feminism to, I donât know, build women up and show that all women are equals, not continue to pit them against each other?Â
My other complaint with Watch Us Rise was the health of Jasmineâs father. Readers know from the first page that Jasmineâs father is ill and he is not going to get better. I was expecting this to be another educational point of the book, how black patients in this country are treated differently in medical facilities than white patients. Nope. Mr. Gray died for Jasmineâs pain and only for her pain. The book would not have changed at all if he had been in remission from cancer or if he had never been diagnosed at all. This is a personal pet peeve of mine in books, especially YA books where parents die. Itâs almost like wives and girlfriends dying in adult romances to fuel man pain, but instead the parent dies to fuel their childâs pain.Â
While at this point it might sound like I hated this book, but that is so far from the truth! In fact, during most of the book, I was asking the book gods WHERE WAS THIS WHEN I WAS A MIDDLE SCHOOL / HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT?!?!? Watson and Hagan do this amazing job of showing that even those who have great intentions can really mess up. In one scene, Jasmineâs drama teacher, Mr. Morison tells Jasmine that in their improv class session, she was showing so much energy and tells her that âJasmine, your âgirl with attitudeâ confidence is perfect. . . I think you may be the only one who can pull it off in such an authentic wayâ (77). Jasmine reminds her teacher that she has performed a variety of roles and the only one Mr. Morison can think she would be well suited for was one where she was sassy and angry. Let me repeat that. . . Mr. Morison told his black student that she would be perfect for a stereotypical role in the media of a sassy black woman. I believe that Mr. Morison said this as a way to encourage Jasmine, however how many times have women heard the phrase, âyouâre pretty for a (insert descriptive word here)â comment. At another point, Chelsea and Jasmine begin making shirts for their group and when Jasmine comes to pick up her shirt she notices that there are no plus size options. Chelsea was in charge of making sure everyone could participate in the t-shirt sale and mistakenly excluded her best friend and co - founder of Write Like a Girl! Jasmine and Chelsea eventually reconcile, but I really enjoy the idea that everyone messes up even with the best intentions and learning from your own prejudices that you might not even have realized you have is such an important piece of being a feminist.Â
Watch Us Rise is super educational, without reading like a textbook. When the protagnoists introduced feminist icons, it was written like two people talking about a shared interest. I never felt like information was jammed down my throat or it was too dense to handle (textbook authors, I want you to take notes here!!). It made me reflect on my early days of learning about feminism, which was Iâm ashamed to say mainly rooted in Tumblr when I was a senior in high school, so it was a very white feminist POV that I am proud to say has greatly expanded and is continuing to expand with new life experiences, but enough patting myself on the back. . .Â
Chelsea and Jasmine have so many safe spaces provided to them in their school, community, and home. Something that again, I wish was made aware to me when I was in high school. I love the idea of a YA or middle grade reader picking up Watch Us Rise and realizing that just because you donât have this safe space in your home, you can have on in your school or your community. I just love the idea that books are bringing safe spaces to people who could really use them or need them and making readers realize they arenât alone. There are adults who want to hear what they have to say, again something that I wish I had known in high school when I was blabbing to my parents about whatever I was interested in when there could have been other trusted adults around me who would have loved to hear what I was obsessed with or even been able to contribute.Â
Finally, another important aspect of Watch Us Rise that I noted was the importance that the internet played. It was nice that the authors included parts where Chelsea or Jasmine went to there internet and looked up other feminist icons to look into on their own time. The last pages of the book also include other icons to look up, resources to go to and books to check out if the urge strikes readers. So many times I feel like authors just make the characters aware of the political issues they are interested in and itâs refreshing to see some characters coming from a place of ignorance, the way we all do when starting to become socially or politically aware.Â
Overall, I gave this book â
stars. I would 100% read this again and wish I could somehow learn what the future held for Jasmine and Chelsea. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. I think that it would be a good starting point for students in middle school if they are interested in reading about feminism, but arenât quite ready for books like Nowhere Girls and The Female of the Species.Â

okay so earlier, I finally finished Golden Sun:The Lost Age (for the first time? idek if I did it last time I played it lol as I distinctly remember a place where I got stuck) n the ending was so good! dat lowkey Garet x Mia in the sudden (but touching) cutscenes was cute haha (even tho I'm more into Garet x Jenna but oh well, guess I will accept Isaac x Jenna now.) also dat iconic moment when both Felix n Isaac talk for once lmao, Sheba n Mia teasing Garet which i thought was... unexpectedly mean of them? but they soon revealed why n i was like lmao tease queens (didn't except that from Mia tbh, guess all 3 main girls are like that in their own way haha)
At first I couldn't get to divide my Djinnis well endgame so I got done n lowkey cheated copy-pasted my setup from Dark Dawn (which I only found semi-satisfying in that btw) lmaođ Used it for the superboss, but for the main boss of the game, I eventually managed to find a setup that was more fitting to this game while being to my liking as well (Isaac: Paladin (most fitting imo), Garet: Chaos Lord (otherwise would have preferred Master) Jenna: Ronin (I liked some other classes like Justice for her as well. War Adept both suits her n Garet, too.), Ivan: Guru (Warlock n Wizard would be good too but ye pretty fitting) , Mia: Pure Mage (very fitting, but Angel n Guru would be nice too)
and
Felix: Protector (he fits Chaos Lord as well but I thought Protector is ironically good n it made me a bit emotional how the ending went through, glad I made him that), (insert Jenna again as this is her main game technically but like I said I like her with Garet even tho I like her dynamics with her team in The Lost Age as well esp Sheba n how they roast n tease people together), Sheba: Warlock (okay Wizard or lowkey Dark Mage would have been pretty fitting too but ye I'm happy with that), Piers: Wizard (oddly fitting, even tho I like him in his manliest class as Admiral as well)
As you may have noticed, my main team is Garet, Jenna, Sheba and Mia, they are my favs haha esp. flame users battle-wise n well, Mia is a healing queen while Sheba is the queen of at-your-face n speed. Then I like Isaac n Piers (other than him being slow as hell at leveling-up but I guess that makes sense considering how slow he ages lmaođ)Â
n grew to like Felix as well, Ivan is the only one who didn't make an impact on me due to how lowkey rude he was with his mindreading during his debut lmao. Like I can see he's pretty pure but dude have you ever heard of this thing called consent lol. He wasn't bad the rest of the way but pretty boring. Also I hate Alex n Kraden can talk so much n be such keen about his research it gets annoying
As you can totally see, I rlly enjoyed it! The forging system still managed to be simple yet borderline torture as its sequel though lmao. But some issues aside, I like the original GBA games as much as its DS sequel. Sure they have a bit more complex puzzles n better ending, n other than my issue with how protective Garet turned out as a parent in the sequel I rlly like both equally! Sorta rare opinion but ye that's what I think. Art-wise, both games are defining in each of their era imo.
And hence, Golden Sun continues to be one of those series I think fondly about, and are dear to me, definitely a gem of series :)
#golden sun#golden sun the lost age#rain corner#i used strike so much lmao pardon#the end-art was so good

[TASK 065: INUIT]
Shout out to @olivaraofrphâââ for helping compile this task in celebration of Native American Heritage Month! The Inuit are a group of culturally and linguistically similar peoples who encompass the North American part of the Arctic, including Greenland, Northern Canada, and Alaska. Thereâs a masterlist below compiled of over 80+ Inuit faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FCâs!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNGâs, fancasts, alternative FCâs - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didnât use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK - Â examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.

2017 Holiday Newsletter
Welcome to the 2017 Politics and Prose Holiday Newsletter. As always, weâre proud to present a selection of some of the yearâs most impressive books. Happy holidays to all!
American Fiction
Jennifer Eganâs Manhattan Beach (@scribnerbooks) captures a time and place on the verge of momentous change. Set in Brooklyn in the 1940s, the novel tells the story of Anna Kerrigan, a young woman who has dropped out of Brooklyn College to contribute what she can to the American war effort. Unsatisfied with her job of inspecting and measuring machine parts, she attempts to enter the male-only world of deep-sea diving. Manhattan Beach is rich and atmospheric, highlighting a period when gangs controlled the waterfront, jazz streamed from the doors of nightclubs, and the future for everyone was far from certain. - Mark L.
Shaker Heights is a perfectly planned town full of people with seemingly perfectly planned lives, but when Mia and her daughter Pearl move in they start a series of little fires, small rebellions, that shake the community to its core. Celeste Ng brilliantly explores the nature of art, family, and identity in her second novel, Little Fires Everywhere (@thepenguinpress). The writing is beautifully elegant and layered, and youâll find yourself immediately swept up in the lives of the characters. At the heart of the story are four mothers: one whose carefully planned family was nearly derailed by a high-risk pregnancy and who watches her youngest daughter so carefully that she forgets to show her love; one who leaves her child at a firehouse to save her life in a hopeless moment; one who longs for a child and fears her chance will be snatched away before she can experience the wonder of motherhood; and one who made a dangerous choice to raise her child on her terms. Whether you are a mother or a child, the story of these women and their families will stay with you long after you turn the last page. - Tori O.
Larry McMurtry has always been ambivalent about the success of the fiction in which he portrays the cowboy myth and the rugged Texas machismo that comes with it, but as you read the three novels collected in Thalia: A Texas Trilogy (Liveright) you wonât be of two minds. Actually, upon learning that McMurtry wrote all these books in his twenties and that they were the very first three he wrote, youâll be burning with envy. In Horseman, Pass By, McMurtry sets Lonnie Bannon with his love of his Granddadâs ranch and way of life against Hud, his step-brother, who is endlessly crude and cruel. At the center of Leaving Cheyenne are Gid, Johnny, and Molly, a rancher, his cowboy hand, and the woman they both love. They each take a turn telling the story of their unconventional lives in small-town Texas. Finally, thereâs The Last Picture Show, in which we see Thalia as a dead-end place. Of the three, this is perhaps the most darkly comic, as nearly every character engages in self-deception in order to eke out an existence in a town where every day is the same. Amid the fantastic and perhaps unbelievably melodramatic events, McMurtry finds a bottomless well of compassion for his characters. This is one time capsule was worth re-opening. - Sharat B.
Described as an âillustrated novella,â and looking like a quirky coffee table book, A Field Guide to the North American Family (Knopf), by Garth Risk Hallberg, is neither. This work, which Hallberg wrote before his 2015 New York epic, City on Fire, is an ingenious maze of a narrative based on the concept of the North American Family. Reminiscent of Lydia Davisâ seemingly quotidian pieces of pointed brilliance, Hallbergâs work is multi-layered, surprising, and deft. At one level the book uses a series of flash-fictions to recount the story of two families. At another, itâs an index of terms that readers can reference while reading the main plotâor savor for the wisdom they offer on their own. Then there are the photos. Each episode comes not only with its keywords but with a visual image. These are sometimes directly related to the text, like conventional illustrations, but often their relationship to the narrative is more elusive. Some pages look as if theyâve been torn from one scrapbook and pasted into this one, others look fresh and new. Grab this emotional map of North American family life and get ready to wander â itâs sure to be a warm, nostalgic trip. - Justin S.
In Paul La Fargeâs The Night Ocean (@penguinrandomhouse), Marina Willettâs husband, a famous-turned-infamous literary historian, has disappeared, seemingly a suicide case but maybe thatâs just what he wants people to think. From this hook, the bookâs tentacles spread into a kaleidoscopic series of investigations, as Marina double-checks her spouseâs leads to get to the bottom of a mysterious bit of H. P. Lovecraft apocrypha called âThe Erotonomicon.â Cameos extend from Lovecraft to William Burroughs, Isaac Asimov, and more, becoming something like âThe Savage Detectives of American weird fiction.â To follow this bookâs incredible story, you donât need to like, or even know, these figures, which are all fictionalized creations anyway, despite the authorâs deep knowledge of their histories. La Farge critiques and parodies but does not romanticize these writers. Heâs deeply attuned to how our human sympathies toward icons we learn about from afar can morph into blind obsession despite our best intentions. His narrative is a seamless combination of trickster humor and utter heartbreak, plumbing the depths to which people will go to forgive, embody, and take revenge upon their former idols, all while preserving their own reputation. The best writing lives inside you âeven possesses you. The Night Ocean does just that. - Jonathan W.
Lily Tuck, whose novel The News from Paraguay won the National Book Award in 2004, is one of our finest writers of novels-in-vignettes, and her latest, Sisters (@theatlantic), takes compression to extremes. Its âchaptersâ are often over in a page, a paragraph, sometimes a sentence, but theyâre such vivid shards that you feel like youâre catching all the other pieces in a mosaic without having to see them spelled out. This is the story of a woman reflecting on her shaky marriage, whose trappingsâher husbandâs children, passions, and memoriesâall come courtesy of a prior spouse. Tuck centers on her narratorâs relationship with this other woman, who, though living across town, always seems to be in the air. What could turn spiteful in another writerâs hands comes off as gentle and empathetic in Tuckâs, as her lead character seizes on snatches of imagery (âa messy ponytail,â âdid not wear ringsâ), to think through what her ostensible rivalâs life must be like. Is it the narrator and not the man who links the two of them who truly understands this woman, she who sees that the bouillabaisse dinner he fondly remembers from France might have made her pregnant body sick? For such a short novel, Sisters is full of these kinds of insights, simply but inimitably framed. - Jonathan W.
One of the most talked about books this autumn, and my favorite, was My Absolute Darling (@riverheadbooks), by Gabriel Tallent. Shocking and unsettling, at times difficult to read, the novel follows fourteen-year-old Turtle Alveston, who feels more at home in nature than she does with her survivalist and damaged father, as she searches for freedom and fights for her soul. Roaming the woods one night, wondering if her father would be able to find her, she meets two lost teenage boys and guides them safely out. And that is the moment she starts questioning her home life. The way Tallent brings you steadily into Turtleâs mind makes you almost feel her pain. He manages to capture her deepest thoughts, her internal struggle, her will to survive. Obviously suffering from Stockholm syndrome, she debates with herself over whether to stay or leave, doubting her worth every step of the way. But she fights and she survives. She is the kind of girl, brave and determined, with whom readers are almost duty-bound to fall in love. Tallent grew up in Mendocino and spent a lot of time outside. His love for the region is evident in Turtleâs view of the place and Mendocino itself is a strong character in the book. This is Tallentâs debut novel. And what a remarkable debut it is! - Marija D.
Friendships seldom get the sustained literary treatment that romances do, but Claire Messudâs insightful novel The Burning Girl (@wwnorton) shows that these relationships strike as deep, stir as many emotions, and do as much to shape a person, for better or worse. They can have special force when formed early in life, and Messudâs protagonists, Julia and Cassie, are best friends from nursery school to roughly seventh grade. Narrating the friendship and its aftermath, Julia, the one who takes paths already there rather than striking out into untrodden territoryâthe one who sets limitsâinsists that she and Cassie are as close as sisters. Their two families never mesh, however, and Julia comes to realize that her notion of âhomeâ is not Cassieâs. Much of Cassieâs home life is guesswork, and while Julia does that work, her version of Cassie is partly made up; at times Cassie seems like one of the characters Julia, an aspiring actress, inhabits on stage. Messud uses the inherently self-dramatizing period of adolescence as a lens to view more difficult questions of how well any two people can know each other, and she brilliantly demonstrates how the typical rites of passageâfantasizing about an alternative family, surviving junior high cliquesâcan suddenly yield âone of those events that that was little and big at the same time,â bringing about the kind of understanding that a person never forgets. - Laurie G.
